Sata dares labour unions planning to strike

Republican President Michael Sata has charged that attempts to frustrate his government’s agenda of developing the country will not succeed. The President explained that since assuming office in September last year, some individuals have been trying to upset government stating that the PF government will not be derailed from fulfilling its promises to the Zambian people.

President Sata dared labor unions to go ahead with their planned strike if government does not meet their demands adding that government will be waiting for them.

The head of state was speaking at State house today when he swore in newly appointed Chiefs and traditional Affairs minister Emerine Kabanshi, Secretary to the cabinet Evans Chibiliti, Education Permanents Secretary Patrick Nkanza and chairperson for the Police and Prisons Service Commission Alexander Museba.

President has urged new office bearers not to be complacent but ensure that they serve the Republic of Zambia.

Yesterday , the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) said that Government should speed up the bargaining process for new conditions of service for public service workers.

ZCTU President Leornard Hikaumba told ZNBC news in an interview that Government should ensure that negotiations are completed before the existing collective agreement expires on March 31st this year.

Mr. Hikaumba added that the four percent salary increment that Government is proposing only applies to grant aided Government institutions and not non grant aided.

He also appealed to public service workers to remain patient and allow for the smooth conclusion of negotiations. Mr. Hikaumba however said that the ZCTU is confident that the negotiations will be completed amicably.

South Africa apologies to Nigeria over yellow fever row

28

South Africa has apologised for the deportation last week of 125 Nigerians over suspicions that their yellow fever certificates were fake.

The action quickly turned into a diplomatic spat – with Nigeria refusing South Africans entry and the foreign minister branding Pretoria xenophobic.

South Africa has rejected that claim – and promised new procedures to avoid a repeat of the “regrettable incident”.

At one stage Nigerian carrier, Arik Air, suspended flights to South Africa.

“We wish to humbly apologise to them, and we have,” South Africa’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ibrahim said.

“We are apologising because we deported a number of people who should not have been deported,” Mr Ibrahim said – adding that he does not expect an apology from Nigeria for the tit-for-tat deportations of South African nationals.

He blamed airport authorities for what a joint statement with Nigeria described as a “regrettable incident which the South African government believes could have been handled better”.

The Nigerians were turned away on 2 March because the yellow fever certificates were not checked properly, according to the deputy minister.

South Africa is considering reopening a travel clinic at Johannesburg’s airport – so that travellers without a yellow fever certificate can be vaccinated on arrival rather than deported.

And from now on, mass deportations will need the permission of foreign ministry officials, the deputy minister said.

On Tuesday, Olugbenga Ashiru, Nigeria’s foreign minister, said the deportations was evidence of xenophobia.

“What you see playing out is what we call xenophobia by South Africans against all Africans – not just Nigerians,” AFP news agency reported him as saying.

In 2008, South Africa saw a wave of xenophobic violence which shocked the nation and shook up the world’s view of the “rainbow nation”.

Mr Ibrahim said on Thursday that South Africa is not a xenophobic country.

The two countries say the yellow fever row will not undermine bilateral relations – and they are moving to strengthening them.

Nigeria is one of the biggest markets for South Africa’s MTN mobile phone operator, while retailer Shoprite and Standard Bank also have profitable operations there.

Why does Zambian Embassy in South Africa ignore Zambians cry over Yellow fever deportations

127

I wish to air my complaint against the Zambian Embassy in South Africa. When an American is stranded or mistreated in another country, their embassy and US government moves in to help that person like a responsible father would do to his son.

In one week, a total of 87 Zambians where sent back at Beit bridge border after being denied entry into South Africa for not having yellow fever books and for having old yellow fever books even if it is valid but as long as it is not deep yellow in color. They were dumped at the Zimbabwean side.

The experience is very horrific and I wouldn’t like a fellow Zambian to go through the same. This continued and one lady was robbed and became stranded at the Zim border. The Zambian government never attends to such issues with concern, it never bothers them.

Bravo to the Nigerian government for the way they reacted by sending back South africans also after 150 Nigerians were denied entry and sent back from the South africa O.R Tambo airport for not having yellow fever books.

Whenever a Zambian visits the embassy in South Africa, they are not treated like their own.Why is this so?

I hope the PF government will do better in this area. I urge the new ambassador to Souht Africa to be more welcoming and helpful. A lot of people
complain about the treatment they get from there. The Zambian government must also start sending back South Africans who do not produce yellow books
upon entry into Zambia. Its time Zambians became united and supported one another. Matter of fact, we have no yellow fever in Zambia, so the South African government must stop discrimination against foreigners.

Patient’s relatives severely beat Kitwe nurse

A NURSE at Kitwe Central Hospital (KCH) was severely beaten by irate relatives of a patient who died at the out patient department (OPD) upon arrival from a private clinic.

Police have since arrested two men, who are alleged to have pounced on a hapless nurse, as she was going to the OPD to look for a doctor to attend to a patient in her ward.

The two have been charged with assault and will appear in court today.

The two men, who were in a group of other rowdy family members, waylaid the nurse and beat her up before she was rescued.

In an uncompromising mood, the two pushed the nurse around and beat her up, accusing her of negligence.

They argued that had medical personnel attended to their relative, she would not have died after she was referred to the central hospital from a private medical centre.

Eye witnesses said the nurse was only rescued by hospital security and other people who had brought patients to the institution.

The nurse identified as Cecilia Kaonga was beaten around 19:20 hours on Wednesday as she walked from Luapula Ward.

Kitwe Central Hospital Public Relations Officer Grey Chishimba confirmed the incident, saying the two men brought a woman who was in a serious condition and died upon arrival at the OPD one.

According to Mr Chishimba, Ms Kaonga went to the OPD to look for a doctor when the men pounced on her.

“It is shocking that the nurse was beaten when she was not even working at the OPD one, she was just walking along the corridor when this rowdy family pounced on her,” Mr Chishimba said.

Mr Chishimba said a doctor and nurse were at the time on duty at the OPD who the relatives should have contacted if they wanted any immediate attention.

He said the doctor and nurse were attending to another critical patients when an unidentified woman was brought in from a private clinic.

“As long as such cases are underplayed, then perpetrators will continue attacking innocent nurses and doctors,” Mr Chishimba said.

Kabimba clarifies his appointment to the Zamtel board of directors

PF Secretary General and spokesperson Wynter Kabimba
PF Secretary General and spokesperson Wynter Kabimba

Patriotic Front (PF) secretary general Wynter Kabimba says his membership on the new Zamtel Board will not in any way affect the operations of the company.

Last week government appointed a new board of directors for the embattled Zamtel Telecommunication Company (Zamtel), to be led by the ruling party’s secretary general Wynter Kabimba.

Mr. Kabimba says his role on the board will be to ensure that the programme of the party which among other things aims at addressing corruption in the parastatal companies as well as protect the workers from exploitative conditions is implemented.

Mr. Kabimba notes that the PF is committed to ensuring that it delivers according to the expectations of the Zambians in line with the party manifesto.

He has assured that he has principles and will ensure that he does not use his political muscle to compromise the operations of Zamtel.

Mr. Kabimba says he is fully aware that Zamtel has to run as a profitable commercial entity but has vowed to ensure that the interests of the Zambians are protected in its operations.

In addition to Kabimba, Sata has also appointed other party cadres, including former Chimwemwe PF member of parliament Willie Nsanda and Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Charity Mwansa to serve on the new board of directors, others include Ministry of Finance permanent secretary Dr Abraham Mwenda and a Mr Mwiinga.

In January this year, President Michael Sata dissolved the board of directors for Zamtel and appointed Dr. Mupanga Mwanakatwe as chief executive officer and chairman. The dissolution of the board of directors for Zambia by Sata follows the reversal of the sale of the company to Lap Green Networks of Libya earlier in the same month.

The Zambian government reversed the sale of the company after a Commission of Inquiry appointed by Sata revealed glaring “irregularities and flaws” in the manner in which the company was sold.

The 75% majority shares in Zamtel were sold to Lap Green Networks in 2010 at a total cost of USD275 million after the MMD government claimed it had failed to recapitalise the company, the country’s only total solution service provider.

Lap Green Networks has since taken the matter to court, demanding that the Zambian government give Zamtel back to the Libyans.

Mwanakatwe has meanwhile promised to make Zamtel more viable and profitable despite the competition the company is facing for Airtel Zambia and MTN Zambia.

The Gender debate:A mans quest for equality

11
Flashback:Former Kasama central MP Saviour Chishimba (l) and his counterpart from Roan Chishimba Kambwili following proceedings during the international women's day commemoration in 2009

By M.Chingala

I should start by saying I am not of the view that man’s supremacy is at stake because of the gender thing. But what if it is? Neither am I saying that men should grab from the women what the latter have taken from them. My argument is basically a thought provoking delve into social streams meant to ignite debate.

Gender activists consistently appear in interviews advocating for this or that woman right. But what happened to demanding equal duties? Why can’t they also advocate for equal jobs (such as underground mining). Why should a man behave like a gentleman in a time when women view such men as sissies?

Which man would like to be seen as a ‘half man? Consequently, every man displays a rough nature. After all the roughest men get the prettiest ladies or am I wrong? Why is it the man who frequents night spots in search of prostitutes so despised by ladies? Why is it a turn off for other women with whom he may not even have intentions of proposing? Personal friends often frown. Is the issue about the concern for the man’s health or what? Isn’t a prostitute better than an unfaithful girlfriend or adulterous wife? I like my friend’s definition of a prostitute. He defines them as people who, for money, do in one night what a wife does in the lifetime of the marriage.

Just like the women’s rights activists or the career-oriented 21st century woman, I like to have fun-except without the worries of a relationship. I care about other people’s feelings so I do not engage in relationships in which I cannot give my all. Well, with the exception of a prostitute. This is because with her, there is mutual understanding to maximize pleasure in one instant and not play offended when either of us is in the company of someone else.

I should say I am quite disappointed with the 21st century woman. She goes out clubbing at night in the company of other men and still demand to be trusted by their partners. Oh, what the hell! Which man would like his lady to do that if he truly loves her?

Women are now enlightened. That is a 21st century woman. Why not be a 21st century man by being the man that you are supposed to be. Don’t think of yourself as a dog. That is just girl talk though it may be true in some areas (such as style of peeing-against something and not in the open!) Think of yourself as a lion, a predator, an animal that enjoys the search. Be outgoing. Meet people. Isn’t that how male genitals are? Outside the body. Seeking to explore, to devour. Besides, our orgasm is also characterized by fluid being ejected.

So what’s my conclusion? Simple. Ladies should not expect me to practice chivalry. They should forget about me ever opening the door for them or helping out with the heavy luggage. Right? Wrong? I will continue to do that but not with the free willingness that they call ‘sissie.’ Some will call me frustrated. That maybe I have had a rough time with ladies. Wrong. I just believe in treating someone the same way they treat me. Just like gender activists, I believe in equal rights, but with equal duties and equal responsibilities. Regards fellas, I’ve got matebeto to attend- My chivalrous friend found a mate.

President Sata upgrades Gender Division to full Cabinet Ministry, appoints Inonge Wina as Minister of Gender

President Michael Sata

Republican President Michael Sata has upgraded the gender division into a full cabinet ministry and appoints Inonge Wina as Gender Minister.

Speaking today in Lusaka at the commemoration of the International Women’s days which falls on 8th March every year, President Sata said that Emerine Kabanshi, who was Gender Division deputy Minister, has now been promoted as Cabinet Minister to take over from Ms Wina as Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister.

President Sata said he is encouraged by the unity exhibited by women during the celebrations regardless of their political affiliation. The President Sata has also pledged his government’s commitment to address gender based violence by domesticating international conventions on gender.

Speaking earlier, NGOCC chairperson Beatrice Grillo appealed to government to operationalize the Anti gender law to ensure that the escalating cases of violence against women are alleviated.

Ms. Grillo further called on government to declare gender based violence a national disaster while urging President Michael Sata to set up a commission of inquiry to look into matters of gender based violence.

Ms. Grillo also demanded that article 23 of the Republican constitution be removed from the new constitution as it hinders women progress.

She has also called on the ministry of justice to set up fast track courts to expeditiously deal with cases of gender based violence.

And UNDP Director Kanni Wignaraja called on Zambians to ensure that traditional and cultural practices that affect the progress for women to be discarded.

She urged government to introduce a minimum threshold in political offices that will attract more women participation in leadership positions.

Hundreds of women and men thronged the show grounds this morning to commemorate the international Women’s day characterized by dances, poems and a match past from Munali round about along the great East Road to the show grounds, the venue of the celebrations among other activities.

This year’s international Women’s day theme is “Connecting girls, inspiring futures, mentorship for success.”

The gathering observed a minute of silence in respect of women who have died as a result of Gender Based Violence.
