Zambia took a slender 2-1 advantage over Ethiopia in the first leg of the final round of 2026 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday.
Precious Mwewa handed the Copper Princesses an early lead in the 14th minute when she tapped in from close range.
Ethiopia equalised late in the first half through Mihret Ayele, but Zambia restored their lead to take a narrow advantage into the return leg.
Coach Carol Kanyemba said the team must improve ahead of the trip to Ethiopia.
“Thanks to God for the victory, although it was a slim victory. We have got a lot of work to do when we go away to Ethiopia but the good part is that we have gotten the goals,” Ms. Kanyemba said.
“Our aim wasn’t to concede but football being what it is, anything happens. We thank God the girls gave their all and we managed to secure a win today.”
The Copper Princesses are targeting a third consecutive World Cup appearance.
Ethiopia coach Rawda Ali said the away goal keeps her side in the contest.
“It is a good result for us. We plan to play a good game in our country. The good thing is we managed to score a goal at their home ground. So we hope to go back home and get more goals,” Ms. Ali said.
Ethiopia players were seen celebrating after the final whistle despite the defeat.
