“Information is power. Any efforts directed towards media development are key in achieving our desire of a well-informed citizenry,” she said.
And Ms. Siliya has appealed to the Chinese Government to consider supporting the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) and the Zambia News and Information Services with equipment and human resource training to enable the two institutions meet the demands that will come with digital Migration.

She said the two institutions are key strategic public institutions on which citizens depend for information critical to national development.
She explained that Government had decided to make ZANIS a 24-hours Television channel and that this demanded that the institution produces enough and quality content to fill the broadcasting time.

Ms. Siliya noted that Government was determined to ensure that its desires and those of the Zambian people succeeded without hindrances.
“We will need your support in terms of training for our staff at ZANIS and ZNBC to bring them up to speed with the new digital environment they are going into. They will also require support in terms of equipment and transport. We will appreciate this support if given,” she said.

And speaking earlier Mr. NIE who is also the Deputy Head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China said his Government will endevour to find to areas of cooperation with Zambia to further cement the already existing cordial relations.

He said apart from support to the media in general, the Chinese Government will also strengthen its cooperation with Zambia in the area of new media.

Mr. NIE said this would help the country to provide smart media services as demanded by the ever changing technology.

He assured Ms. Siliya that the Chinese Government would do everything possible to support the Zambian Government in its quest to develop the public media by providing the necessary support.

The Information Minister is in China to attend the 4th Forum on China-Africa Media Cooperation and the 8th African Digital Television Development Seminar being held in Huairou District in Beijing.

Over 500 women-owned businesses from across the world are participating at the SheTrades Global event in search of new trade and investment opportunities. SheTrades Global features facilitated business to business meetings, keynote speeches from thought leaders, high level panels, an investment challenge and workshops led by industry specialists. Opportunities for women entrepreneurs participating include enhancing their visibility, expanding their network and make new business connections.

Zambia’s First Lady Esther Lungu has said empowering women and investing in their potentials is pivotal to drive growth in the global economy and ensure sustainable development for the future generation.

In a meeting before the official opening of The SheTrades Global 2018, Mrs. Lungu said women in decision making positions should embrace grass root development headed by women as this will bring about development in different sectors of the economy.

Meanwhile International Trade Centre (ITC) Executive Director, Arancha Gonzalez has called on all women entrepreneurs, governments, private sector companies, trade and investment institutions as well as civil society groups to allow trade to be a uniting force.

Mrs. Ghani said “We feel women’s work is not recognised globally. It is about time that women came together and transformed the economic situation of our economies through trade and entrepreneurship. Women should not be left behind in the development of our economies.”

Speaking when she officially opened The SheTrade Global 2018, Ms. Gonzalez encouraged women attending the conference to seize the opportunity of attending the event to forge lasting relationships and expand opportunities for women entrepreneurs through trade.

“By working together, we can reduce the estimated 217 years it will take to achieve gender parity. We can ensure that 90 percent of countries maintaining one or more laws discriminating against women in the economy see reforms. We can promote women’s participation in public procurement, and we can create a more equitable representation of women exporters. If we manage to do this, we can unlock the full potential of women’s economic participation and add up to $28 trillion USD to the world’s GDP by 2025,” she said

Ms. Gonzalez said in 2015, ITC launched the SheTrades Initiative with a goal of connecting 1 million women to international markets by 2020 and by the end of 2017 met its target and has since been revised to 3 million by the end of 2021. The ITC vision is to create an enabling ecosystem for greater integration of women in global trade and investment.

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Dora Siliya says new technology has created a convergence which has disrupted traditional media.

Ms. Siliya notes that this calls for new ways of thinking and serious investments in the sector.

Speaking at the 4th Forum on China-Africa media cooperation in Beijing yesterday, Ms. Siliya who is also Chief Government Spokesperson said there is need for African countries to strengthen their cooperation with countries that have advanced in technology such as China.

The Minister noted that the forum on China-Africa media cooperation, which has brought together about 400 delegates from 45 African countries, provides a fertile opportunity to deepen cooperation between China and Africa in their collective desire and determination to create an informed and knowledge based society.

She told delegates that the Zambian Government viewed the forum as an important platform in facilitating technology transfer from China to Zambia and Africa as a whole.

“This forum has even become more urgent with the arrival of the information communication technologies such as internet, digital broadcasting and others in which China is leading the way,” said Ms. Siliya.

Ms. Siliya said China’s emphasis on cooperation and a win-win outcome had continued to generate favourable conditions for its relations with many African countries including Zambia.

And Deputy Head of the Publicity Department of Communist Party of China NIE Chenxi said the Chinese Government will continue find ways and means to enhance cooperation between China and Africa.

Mr. NIE, who is also Minister of National Radio and Television Administration, said China will also continue to foster strategic partnerships such as in media sector.

He said this was important because the media is a critical component in the enhancement culture and overall national development.

Mr. NIE called on all African countries to strengthen their media in terms of technology and human resources especially with the migration of the broadcasting sector from analogue to digital.

He said China stands ready to offer its expertise and support to African countries implementing and those which are yet to start the process of digital migration.

“We must explore ways in which we can further collaborate in areas such as policies, technology and human resource training to enhance media convergence through digitalization,” said Mr. NIE.

And speaking at the same event, Chief Executive Officer of the African Union of Broadcasting, Gregoire Ndjaka said China has distinguished itself as a reliable and important partner in media development for many African countries.

Mr. Ndjaka noted that China had continued to help many African countries to bring positive change in the broadcasting sector especially in the implementation of digital migration in television.

He, however, said there was urgent need to align the media profession with new trends and to re-think the manner in which materials are packaged.

Mr. Ndjaka said the African Union of Broadcasting will continue to encourage and emphasise the need for all African countries to migrate their broadcasting sectors for the prudent use of the cyber spectrum.

Ms. Siliya is accompanied by Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Director-General, Josephine Mapoma, IBA Deputy Board Chairperson, Patricia Mwase and ZANIS Director, Patrick Lungu.

ZCCM IH CEO Pius Kasolo signs with a representative from Oranto Petroleum.

ZCCM IH has m signed an agreement with a Nigerian petroleum firm to explore for oil on two exploration blocks in Zambia.

Blocks 17 and 27 represent Oranto’s first investment in Zambia.

Under the agreement, signed this week, Oranto Petroleum will hold a 90 percent stake and ZCCM Investment Holdings will control a 10 percent share, on behalf of the Zambian Government.

The company will be required to conduct geological and geophysical studies for first two 2-year sub-periods.

Current oil exploration activities in Zambia are done by Tullow Oil and Bowleven.

Zambia does not produce oil, but the government says soil samples sent to European laboratories have shown good traces of crude.

Though only marginal finds have been discovered, the under-explored market shares basins with Tanzania to the northeast and Angola to the west-both of which have hosted mega oil and gas discoveries.

“Oranto Petroleum is committed to an aggressive work programme to increase the levels of prospectivity in one of the world’s last true frontier markets,” it said in a statement.

“Our specialty at Oranto Petroleum is discovering the vast potential of Africa’s frontier oil and gas markets, and we are very pleased to add Zambia to our extensive portfolio. We are committed to developing Zambia into an oil and gas producing nation, as we have many times with other countries on the continent.”
