Speaking during the occasion to mark 50 years of Golden jubilee Celebrations of Monze Nursing School and Midwifery yesterday, Southern Province Permanent Secretary Mwangala Liomba says government acknowledges the huge contribution that Monze School of Nursing has made in the country.

Since its establishment in 1968, the School has trained 1,286 midwives, 1,355 registered nurses and 157 both registered and midwives.

He pointed out that government would continue to fully support the school to meet all its needs to ensure that the school continue to train more health personnel to meet the growing demands for health care services across the country.

Mr. Liomba also noted the challenges the school of Nursing was facing such as lack of accommodation, and lecture rooms for the school to expand and increase enrollments rates.

The PS who pledged K5,000 towards jubilee activities such as expansion of the school, radio programmes, school rehabilitation further advised students to continue to learn values and skills that would help them to deliver exceptionally quality health cares services once employed.

And Bishop Hamungole said the Catholic church would continue to nurture the partnership with government to ensure that the school is sustained adding that it was the Catholic Church’s commitment to train medical personnel that would remain relevant to society despite the changing times.

The Bishop explained that the increase in the number of services offered by Monze Mission Hospital exposed the shortage of qualified Zambian Health professionals and thus the training of local personnel was a priority for the Church in Monze Diocese resulting in the training of Zambia Enrolled midwives(ZEM) started in 1968 while that of Zambia Enrolled Nursed(ZEN) started in 1971.

” Am conscious of the partnership that that exist between the Catholic Church and government in ensuring that this school is sustained. “The increase in the number of services offered by Monze Mission Hospital exposed the shortage of qualified Zambian Health professionals and thus the training of local personnel was a priority for the Church in Monze Diocese and this resulted in the training of Zambia Enrolled midwives(ZEM) started in 1968 while that of Zambia Enrolled Nursed (ZEN) started in 1971,” added the Bishop.

The Bishop also took time to advise both current and future student to religiously keep the values of the school to shape their character.

Meanwhile, Hospital Superintendent Dr Eugine Kaunda says the student uptake has continued to increase adding that plans are in the pipeline to expand the school infrastructure to meet the training needs.

He also thanked government for completion of the students hostels, dining hall and kitchen at the new school campus.

The Zambia Association in South Africa ( ZASA ) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a leading South African legal firm that will help provide legal representations to Zambians that face Police and Immigration related challenges.

Mr Lungu says that his Association decided to sign the MoU following the alleged constant reported cases of Police and Immigration harassment of some Zambians living in that country including their inability to meet legal fees.

ZASA Vice President Abel Lungu said the MoU was a welcome move following an increased number of its members that were experiencing harassment and victimisation from that country’s law enforcement institutions.

The 2017 Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership has been awarded to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation announced today following a meeting of its independent Prize Committee.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who served two terms as President of Liberia from 2006 to 2017, is the fifth recipient of the Ibrahim Prize, which recognises and celebrates excellence in African leadership. The Ibrahim Prize aims to distinguish leaders who, during their time in office, have developed their countries, strengthened democracy and human rights for the shared benefit of their people, and advanced sustainable development.

In its citation, the Prize Committee praised her exceptional and transformative leadership, in the face of unprecedented and renewed challenges, to lead Liberia’s recovery following many years of devastating civil war.

Announcing the decision, Dr Salim Ahmed Salim, Chair of the Prize Committee, said: “Ellen Johnson Sirleaf took the helm of Liberia when it was completely destroyed by civil war and led a process of reconciliation that focussed on building a nation and its democratic institutions. Throughout her two terms in office, she worked tirelessly on behalf of the people of Liberia. Such a journey cannot be without some shortcomings and, today, Liberia continues to face many challenges. Nevertheless, during her twelve years in office, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf laid the foundations on which Liberia can now build.”

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became President of Liberia on 16 January 2006, after winning the 2005 national elections. She served her first term 2006-11 and was then successfully re-elected for a second term, serving in office 2012-17. Since 2006, Liberia was the only country out of 54 to improve in every category and sub-category of the Ibrahim Index of African Governance. This led Liberia to move up ten places in the Index’s overall ranking during this period.

On hearing the outcome of the Prize Committee’s deliberations, Mo Ibrahim said: “I’m delighted that the Prize Committee has decided to make Ellen Johnson Sirleaf an Ibrahim Prize Laureate. In very difficult circumstances, she helped guide her nation towards a peaceful and democratic future, paving the way for her successor to follow. I am proud to see the first woman Ibrahim Laureate, and I hope Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will continue to inspire women in Africa and beyond.”

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf joins Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia (2014), Pedro Pires of Cabo Verde (2011), Festus Mogae of Botswana (2008) and Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique (2007) as an Ibrahim Prize Laureate. Nelson Mandela was made the inaugural Honorary Laureate in 2007.

The Ibrahim Prize is a US$5 million award paid over ten years and US$200,000 annually for life thereafter. The Mo Ibrahim Foundation will consider granting a further US$200,000 per year for ten years towards public interest activities and good causes espoused by the Ibrahim Laureate.

The candidates for the Ibrahim Prize are all former African executive heads of state or government who have left office during the last three calendar years, having been democratically elected and served their constitutionally mandated term.

Hakainde Hichilema

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has warned President Edgar Lungu to desist from stealing public funds.

“Is this the kind of government our country needs to progress. We have always known that our country is in hands of corrupt individuals but what we didn’t fathom was the level of impunity with which corruption is being encouraged,” he said.

“In view of that and by virtue of this statement we wish to state that we shall take decisive actions to stop Mr. Lungu from further depleting our country’s resources. If it means writing to international institutions that are fighting corruption and plundering of public resources, we shall do so in order to protect our country’s properties from being individualised.”

Nkana may have a relatively good idea who their 2018 CAF Confederation Cup opponents will be in next month’s second round.

Nkana are the only one of Zambia’s four continental representatives who did not see any preliminary stage action that kicked off this weekend after they were handed a bye.

Their prospective opponents, Onze Createurs of Mali and Algerian club CR Belouizdad, finished 1-1 in Bamako on Friday.

The return leg decider will be played in Algeria on February 21.

Nkana will be away in the first leg next month.

In the 2018 CAF Champions League, Zanaco may be heading to Swaziland next month if all goes according to script.

Mbabane Swallows were 4-2 away winners over Bantu Rovers in Lesotho in their first leg on Sunday.

Zanaco, who beat Gambia AF 4-0 in Lusaka on Saturday, will be home in the first leg in March.

Meanwhile, in Benin today, Buffles du Borgou finished 1-1 at home with ASEC Mimosa of Cote d’Ivoire in their first leg.

Winner next week will travel away in the first leg to either Zesco or JKU who also finished 1-1 in Zanzibar on Saturday.

Zambia’s other CAF Confederation Cup opponents Green Buffaloes who lost 4-0 away to El Masry must overturn that result against the Egyptians next Wednesday for a prospective second round date against Simba of Tanzania.

Simba beat Gendarmerie of Djibouti 4-0 in Dar-es-Salaam on Sunday.

“In life you need to have challenges. That challenge is welcome, indeed we need to win the league,” Musonda said.

Nkana will start the Confederation Cup campaign at the first round stage after being put on bye during the preliminary phase.

Ms Kampamba who is also government spokesperson said it was sad that the gross and rampant abuse of social media has continued targeting especially those in leadership and women.

The minister who is Kalulushi Member of Parliament said ZICTA through The ministry of transport and communication is working round the clock on how best to reverse the trend.

Ms Kampamba said it was time social media was used for educating and promoting morals that will improve the country’s development and image. President Lungu gives Kitwe City Council a 20 days ultimatum to revisit rental charges

37

President Edgar Lungu has given Kitwe City Council 20 days in which to revisit rental charges at the Nakodali market in Chimwemwe township as the charges were unreasonable.

Addressing a public rally at the market after a conducted tour of the premises, today, President Lungu said it was not making sense to have built a big market and yet not occupied despite having constructed recently.

There was no way a market of this size could be failing to provide services which are supposed to be enjoyed by marketeers when they were paying rentals, said the President.

“ It would be make more economic sense if the council can reduce rentals so that there is full occupancy and maximize on rental collections, “ the President said.

He said he was aware that even the little that was been collected is been pocketed a situation which he described as unfortunate.

He reasoned that it was important the money being raised is ploughed back so that the welfare of marketeers such as clean water, toilets and garbage collection are provided.

“ It is upsetting and worrying to discover that most local authorities have slowed down the pace of developmental projects which have been funded under them, “ he said.

President Lungu warned that he will not hesitate to fire erring and incompetent managements so that the ae replaced with those who ready to deliver and work.

The PF’s slogan of putting more money in people’s pockets means that as a party it wants to provide and improve health delivery services, schools and other social amenities which will enhance their livelihood, he said.

He also wondered why water utility companies in the province had failed to meet the water demand of locals.

He said his office will not sit but find out from the responsible ministry to get answers.

And President Lungu has urged water utility companies on the Copperbelt to improve water supply.

He said he was aware that there is a problem of water supply in most area in the province.

The head of state said he will engage the management of Copperbelt based water utility companies to establish their problems and see how water supply can be improved.

He charged that he will not hesitate to fire culprits if the problem is about people not working.

President Lungu reiterated his commitment to developing the country and stated that his government’s performance should be judged from 2016 when he started a full term of office.

He said his government will empower people but stated that it will not put money in people’s individual pockets but will instead provide a conducive environment for people to make money.

And President Lungu has urged Kitwe residents not to be swayed by opposition political leaders who are inciting them to leave the Patriotic Front stating that there is nothing the label PF members can do for them.

He also urged the residents of Chimwemwe and Wusakile to work with their independent members of parliament, Mwila Mutale and Pavyuma Kalobo respectively so as to bring development in their areas following the two MP’s willingness to work with the ruling party.

He urged them to remain loyal to the ruling party as it is working hard to develop the country and address the needs of the citizen as promised during the campaigns.

Earlier, cabinet minister, MPs and PF senior party officials took turns to urge Kitwe residents to continue rallying behind the ruling party as it was the only party capable of addressing their problems and bringing meaningful development to the country.

The ministers and PF party officials cautioned the Kitwe residents against listening to the empty promises of frustrated politicians who failed to deliver when they held government positions.

Meanwhile, president Lungu has concluded his three day working visit on the Copperbelt where he commissioned the ZAFFICO poles treatment plant in Kalulushi, inspected works on the Mufulira-Ndola road and also inspected police officer’s houses construction project at Mukambo boarder among other engagements.

Government to take action against the importation of sex toys and dolls

GOVERNMENT will not condone and entertain unacceptable practices to infiltrate and corrupt the moral fibre of the citizens, says Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs Godfridah Sumaili.

Reverend Sumaili said it was disappointing that some individuals and organisations could openly defend uncultural and unholy practices such as the use of sex toys and dolls when the country was expected to uphold high moral standards and ethical behaviour.

She said Zambia was founded on Christian principles and values and would never give room to anyone planning to import, sell and promote sex toys and dolls as a normal business.

Rev Sumaili said her ministry would work closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the practice was completely halted in Zambia.

The minister said, “the Penal Code under Section 177 forbids the importation, sell, conveyance and engaging in the promotion of obscene materials or objects that can corrupt morasl.” “Therefore, the Government will not allow this evil and immoral act of using sex toys.

She said President Edgar Lungu has time and again called upon the youth to uphold high moral and cultural values and abide by the law so as to contribute positively to the development of the country.

Rev Sumaili said promoting the use and trade of sex dolls was defeating the efforts the Head of State was making, adding people and organisations propagating immoral acts had no blessing and place in Zambia. Recently, PeP was quoted in some sections of the media as saying there was no crime in using and buying sex dolls.

Dismissal of NW police Chief Auxensio Daka is within the President’s jurisdiction

chief government spokesperson Kampamba Mulenga.
THE dismissal of North-Western Province police commissioner Auxensio Daka by President Edgar Lungu is within his powers, says chief government spokesperson Kampamba Mulenga.

Ms Mulenga said it was shocking that the UPND had opted to politicise every decision made by Government. She said this was where the State found problems with the type of politics being practised by the opposition party.

In an interview yesterday, Ms Mulenga, who is Information and Broadcasting minister said when President Lungu appoints anyone to public office he did not give reasons why one was hired but wondered why it should be different when one was fired or dismissed in the national interest. “It is within President Lungu’s jurisdiction to hire or fire any public officer either for misconduct, unprofessionalism or in national interest or voluntary separation. There is nothing sinister or illegal about it,” she said.

Mr Clayson Hamasaka, press secretary for the UPND president, claimed that the dismissal of Mr Daka was unconstitutional and that he was being persecuted for being professional.

But Ms Mulenga laughed off the claims, saying the Police Service Commission was not a private institution and that government would continue making decisions in the best interest of the nation.

She said the Head of State was privileged to work with anyone he was comfortable with and whoever he felt could help him deliver his mandate to the Zambian people.

Ms Mulenga said the UPND should relook at their party manifesto as it had similarities to the ruling PF and that they were already delivering according to citizens’ expectations.

She said the UPND leadership should focus its energy to tell people what it had to offer instead of witch hunting or shooting in the dark.

Laura Miti is a UPND stooge – Kamba

PF Lusaka province Youth chairman Kennedy
CIVIL activist Laura Miti is a UPND stooge who is hiding behind the veil of running a civil society organisation to propagate her funders’ ideals by demonising Government every day, says Lusaka Province PF youth chairperson Kennedy Kamba.

Mr. Kamba said he was not surprised that Ms Miti had continued making wild allegations against Government on any decisions it has made. He accused Ms Miti of turning a blind eye to all the social evils such as violence that the UPND had engaged in because she was HH’s sympathiser.

He said while there was nothing wrong with CSOs criticising Government and providing checks and balances, he had a problem with NGOs with political agendas such as Ms. Miti who was using her organisation to propagate her political ambitions.

“Have you ever heard Ms. Miti saying anything good about anything that Government has done? Have you ever heard her condemning UPND for anything? This is what makes her operations as a leader of the CSO questionable.

How possible is it that the PF can be doing everything wrong while the opposition is always correct?

“Ms. Miti must stop hiding behind the veil of running a CSO because people are able to read between the lines and realise that she is just a UPND stooge and all she is doing is to propagate its agenda by attacking the ruling party unnecessarily,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kamba said no matter how many CSOs gang up against the government, nothing will change because the people of Zambia were witnesses to the robust development Zambia had attained since the PF came into power.

“The same people who were demonising President Edgar Lungu over his international trips have now changed and are questioning why he has stopped attending international meetings, “What motivates them to change positions from time to time if it is not to facilitate for regime change?”

Mr Kamba said because President Lungu had chosen to concentrate on inspecting projects, they are now panicking because they know the projects if completed, would spell doom to their campaigns for the 2021 elections.
