PF Youth Warn Harry Kalaba for his Facebook Post on Corruption in Government

PF LUAPULA Province youth Chairperson Jacob Chilufya has described Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba as a Judas Ischariot following his attacks against government on Facebook.

In a press statement made available to the media, the Youth Chairperson Jacob Chilufya, popularly known as Kapondo, asked Mr Kalaba to resign and face them in Bahati for by election campaigns where he is Member of Parliament.

“Honorable Kalaba should just resign, that’s a simple thing do. If indeed he is a genuine Minister why is washing dirt linen in public. If he is a genuine Minister why is he not raising issues in Cabinet or reporting to the anti – corruption commission,” wondered Mr. Chilufya.

He said Mr Kalaba had ceased to be one of the ‘genuine ministers’ from Luapula adding that youths from the province would not support him.

He wondered why Mr. Kalaba who was a Minister had taken to social media to talk about corruption in government instead of raising issues in Cabinet or reporting to the law enforcement agencies if indeed there was corruption as he claimed.

Mr. Chilufya stated that it was clear that Mr. Kalaba did not believe in the PF government hence the need for him to resign.

“In the year 2018 we are only going to support genuine ministers who are doing good to the people of Luapula Province and the country as a whole and not pretenders,” He Said

Mr. Chilufya said PF youths were itching for a by – election in Bahati constituency.

He has since called on party members to rally behind President Lungu and demonstrate unquestionable loyalty to the Head of State.

Happy New year Zambia

“Tayesapapatiza chaka chalelo”. These were the words of the late Fr. Tembo of Mzuzu Diocese of Malawi way back in 1995. Unfortunately, two weeks into the year 1995, Fr. Tembo hit into a stationery truck and died instantly to the horror of on-lookers. In his mind, the year 1994 had been a difficult year and he was relieved to cross into 1995. Many of us might share in the feeling of Fr. Tembo. The year 2017 could have been less than what we hoped it to be and we might have silently prayed for it to pass fast on account of it being a difficult year and we might be hoping that 2018 will be much better. While it might be true that 2017 brought about its own challenges, it is also true that the year brought before us the opportunities to make ourselves proud if only we made better choices.

The year gone by will most likely be famous and remembered for the rising tide of corruption and the seemingly falling standards of public accountability – a phenomenon which all well meaning Zambians should shun and endeavour to confine to the yester- year. The year 2018 is yet another opportunity for all of us to Rally behind all the honourable men and women in Government and outside Government who have been championing the crusade against corruption and add our voices to those that have resolved to come in public office with clean hands. It is possible to make Zambia great if we all choose the country above self because we have seen the horror at play when self-interests are propagated and the collective will of the people is hashed. We can no longer fold our arms in silence and watch the impunity of those that make the essence of governing a mockery.

Those of us in public office who have let our people down must self-correct and yield to the will of the Zambian people. It is an honourable thing to do and when we have embraced this new standard of service to the people, we will be proud to stand and sing of Zambia and the era of consistent excellence will dawn upon us. 2018 brings forth this opportunity and promise or we can simply look away and accept to be men less of our mandate and beneath our calling.

I refuse to accept a Zambia that is defined more by its failings rather than its strengths. I refuse to accept a Zambia that is known for its wickedness rather than its chastity. We are a chosen Nation whose God is the Lord. We can make 2018 the year we returned to our lost sanity. Systems and people might have failed us in the past but that doesn’t make Zambia a failed Nation. Zambia is endowed and blessed but to harness those endowments, our hearts and minds must be congruent in admitting that self-interest must be crucified at the altar of pure service.

The Zambia Forestry and Forest Industry Cooperation (ZAFFICO) management has assured its employees of job security when the company is listed under the Lusaka Stock Exchange ( LSE ).

Zambia Forestry and Forest Industry Cooperation Board Chairperson, Jacob Mwitwa says since it was now the policy of the Industrial Development Corporation to list all state owned companies under the Lusaka Stock Exchange the development should not instill fears of job losses among its staff.

The policy does not any way make any employees loose employment and has since told the workers to continue doing the best for the company and ignore rumours going round that ZAFFICO will lay off some of its workers, says Professor Mwitwa.

ZANIS reports that the ZAFFICO Board Chairperson said this during the ZAFFICO Plantation and Tea Estate Division 2017 end of year party at Uphill Country Lodge in Kawambwa District.

“ the policy is a progressive policy that aims at making state owned companies like ZAFFICO raise more capital for re-investment and in turn creating more job opportunities, “ he said.

And Kawambwa District Commissioner, Ivo Mpasa who graced the occasion appealed to ZAFFICO Board and Management to demarcate part of its land for the out-grower scheme as a way of empowering the local people.

Earlier ZAFFICO Managing Director, Frightone Sichone said the company has fully taken over the running of former Kawambwa Tea Estate and that management is currently revisiting the working conditions for its workers to make them be in line with those of their counterparts at ZAFFICO.

Mr. Sichone who is also Chief Executive Officer for the two entities urged the workers to continue being disciplined, loyalty and work hard to become more productive.

ZCTU urges affiliates to reject Nkandu Luo’s proposal to remove unions

HIGHER Education Minister, Professor Nkandu Luo greets former Chasefu Member of Parliament, Chifumu Banda, at the funeral of the late former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Mkhondo Lungu in Lundazi
THE Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has called on its affiliates to reject the proposal by Higher Education Minister Nkandu Luo to remove unions from university councils at the three public universities.

ZCTU deputy general secretary Elaston Njovu said the decision to remove the three union representatives at the public universities was wicked and should not be allowed to happen.

Mr Njovu was speaking at the official opening of the Zambia United Local Authorities Workers Union (ZULAWU) quadrennial conference in Kabwe at the weekend.

He said speaking about the injustices, including delayed payment of salaries, should not be perceived as being an enemy of the State and urged the union leaders to be united on issues affecting their employees.

“It’s sad that employers are working hard to destroy the union. At CBU (Copperbelt University) and the other two public universities, Professor Nkandu Luo has pushed a document to Cabinet which is proposing the removal of the union from the councils, meaning the three unions at CBU and UNZA will have no representation,” Mr Njovu said.

“Please, if the media are here, capture this: We want to call that kind of move as wickedness and we want to condemn it as evil, as unions. They are testing waters and next it will be you and at the end we will not have the union.”

Mr Njovu said he was at pains to understand that the unions were quiet when some employees had gone for months without pay.

He said that many ZULAWU members in various councils across the country were suffering and urged the union leaders to help them in order to help the efforts of the Government in providing services to the citizens.

Earlier, All Municipal and Public Services Workers, the union of Turkey’s Ali Riza Yilmaz, urged the union preventatives to be strong in advocating the workers’ rights.

Mr Yilmaz said the union in Turkey was strong and had continued to recruit members and that it would like to strengthen its relationship with its Zambian counterpart.

Government to spend K30 million to rehabilitate school infrastructure in Zambia

Government will spend thirty million Kwacha to rehabilitate school infrastructure in all ten provinces across the country.

Ministry of General Education Director of Infrastructure Joseph Ntele says the project which will start this year is expected to enhance school infrastructure.

And Mr. Ntele says government has released eight hundred thousand Kwacha to rehabilitate two schools whose roofs were blown off due to heavy downpour in Kasama and Mpulungu districts respectively.

Mr. Ntele says the two districts recently experienced a heavy down pour and a whirlwind blew off the roofs of the two schools.

He said this in an interview with ZNBC News after touring Ituna Secondary school in Kasama and Kalizya Primary school in Mpulungu district which had their roofs blown off due to heavy rains.

And Mr. Ntele says it is government’s agenda to ensure that education is taken in to all corners of the country as can be seen from the keeping the girl child in school initiative project by the government.

Lusaka Mayor shouldn’t have had to wait for the President to intervene-Chisenga

Lusaka Mayor Wilson Kalumba

FORMER Lusaka Mayor, Daniel Chisenga has urged his successor Wilson Kalumba to take President Lungu’s observation that Lusaka City Council (LCC), had gone to sleep to stop cholera as a wakeup call.

Mr Chisenga said it was unfortunate that LCC- and the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, had to wait for the President to do their work.

“As ex-Mayor of Lusaka we did what we could to halt cholera cases. I also recall recently how some PF cadres took it upon themselves to clean some parts of the city on their own initiative.

“So for me I think LCC and the Ministry of Local Government and Housing should have done this before the President came in,” Mr. Chisenga said in an interview.

He advised Mr Kalumba to engage Lusaka residents on keeping the city clean and stressed the need for other local authorities in Zambia to learn lessons from the LCC case and not fold their arms in comfort.

He however appealed to Lusaka residents not to judge Mr Kalumba as he had only served a year.

The former Lusaka Mayor also praised President Lungu for his bold decision to involve defence forces with LCC and the Ministry of Health to halt cholera, which has so far claimed 41 lives since it broke out on October 6, 2017.

Inspecting the cleaning exercise in the central business district of Lusaka, President Lungu said the LCC and the Ministry of Local Government and Housing had gone to sleep as they allowed markets and other trading areas to continue operating in filthy surroundings.

He said the Local authority had allowed sanitary infrastructure to be overwhelmed by unplanned structures despite government spending massive sums of money on upgrading infrastructure to modern standards.

Patrick Phiri extols Chris Mugalu

Lusaka Dynamos coach Patrick Phiri has described striker Chris Mugalu as one of the best forwards he has worked with in a long time.

Mugalu made immediate impact during his debut FAZ Super Division season at Dynamos in 2017 scoring 21 goals.

That tally also saw the DR Congo striker walk away with the 2017 FAZ Golden Boot.

Phiri said not since the four seasons he spent at Nkana where he coached the likes of striker Musole Sakuwanda and won two league titles in 1999 and 2001 has he worked with goal scorer of that magnitude.

“I have not seen a player of such talent, dedication and hard work in a long time in the Zambian league especially with players from DR Congo since Sakulanda at Nkana over seventeen years ago,” Phiri said.

“His work rate is amazing and he was a great striker to work with this season.”

Phiri admitted Mugalu’s exploits have not gone unnoticed.

“Obviously it will be very difficult to keep him after his exploits this season,” Phiri said.

“We will not stand in his way if an opportunity comes but it will be very sad to see him go.”

In the Kitchen with Kanta: Vegetable Stir Fry

In-The-Kitchen-With-Kanta-Logo (1)

Happy New Year everyone!! I hope that 2018 brings us all happiness and blessings. Some of you might be feeling sluggish and bloated after the festive season; I know I certainly am, but everyone deserves a little treat, and now that the festive season is over, we can all get back to being healthy. It’s a new year; which means new beginnings and a fresh start. So, to kick start the year and get us off on the right foot I decided to do this easy vegetable stir fry; packed with goodness and flavour, and perfect for the whole family.

Prep: 5-10 mins | Cooking: 5-10 mins

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 red chilli, sliced (optional)
  • 1 garlic clove, sliced
  • 500g mixed vegetables such as pak choi, baby corn, broccoli, carrots, bell peppers
  • 1½ tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Method

Heat the oil in a large frying pan or wok, then fry the chilli and garlic for 1 minute.

If you’re adding vegetables such as carrots, bear in mind that they take a bit longer than the other veggies, so you may wish to boil them for 5 minutes before to soften them slightly.

Add the vegetables and toss them to coat in the oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes, then add the soy and chilli sauce, mixing well. Cook for 2-3 more minutes until the vegetables are tender.

Feel free to throw in any other vegetables into your stir fry, mushrooms, peas and sweet corn also go perfectly in this dish.

Serving

Serve hot, with a Chicken or Beef and Rice, Couscous or Quinoa. Enjoy!

Make plan B for the traders-PAC

14
Andyford Banda
Andyford Banda

Opposition People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) President Andyford Banda has urged the PF government to come up with an alternative trading place for street venders it has removed from the streets.

In a statement, Mr Banda said his party commends President Edgar Lungu for taking the lead in cleaning the city of Lusaka to avert further escalation of the cholera outbreak.

“We have always said that the Mayor has not done enough to come up with sustainable initiatives and partnerships to clean up the city of Lusaka. Most of these initiatives do not necessarily need to have money as the mayor can solicit the support of various stake holders especially with the number of companies operating in Lusaka’s CBD,” Mr Banda said.

“We hope the mayor of Lusaka wakes up and smells the coffee. He needs to engage various stakeholders in order to ensure that the initiatives succeed.”

“However, when it come to the traders who have been chased and have had their structures demolished, we would like to urge the PF government to come up with a plan B as this situation was caused by them. The erection of illegal trading posts started immediately after the PF won the 2011 elections. We all remember the Donchi Kubeba market in Kamwala that spread to Lumumba, Freedom Way and Chachacha Roads.”

He added,”Because of their misplaced methods of wanting to remain popular, the PF government turned a blind eye to the spiraling negative consequences and the traders became entrenched in this as their source of livelihood.”

Mr Banda said, “In as much as we commend the initiatives to clean the city, we also urge the government to think about a sustainable plan for the people who were trading there. This problem did not start yesterday, it has been with us for years. Therefore, the PF Government can’t just unceremoniously chase citizens who have been trading there without thinking of how the displaced traders will feed their families and will send their children to school.”

“On our part as PAC, we have consistently urged the PF government to come up sustainable empowerment programs that can benefit all Zambians regardless of their political affiliation. What our nation needs are long term plans and a system that empowers all Zambians, not just short term plans convenient for elections.”

He said believes that Zambia needs more statesmen and fewer politicians adding that Politicians prepare for the next general elections; whereas statesmen prepare for the next generation.

President Edgar Lungu has called for prioritizing the involvement of school going children in cholera sensitization campaigns in order to contain the pandemic that has ravaged Lusaka and has since spread to Lundazi District in Eastern Province.

President Lungu said that pupils are an important resource in sensitizing families and the general public on the need to maintain high standards of hygiene in communities and schools across the country.

ZANIS reports that the Head of State said this yestarday when he toured Bauleni Primary School in Lusaka where he was accompanied by Ministers of Commerce and Health Margaret Mwanakatwe and Chitalu Chilufya.

President Lungu was given a thunderous welcome by hundreds of pupils who had left their New Year celebrations at home to catch a glimpse of the head of state.

The pupils got a New Year treat as they interacted with President Lungu and impressed him with their general knowledge of cholera and prevention tips.

“You pupils can help sensitize families to contain cholera by telling them to wash hands, maintain hygiene. As learners, you can influence us to change,” said President Lungu.

The President also pledged to upgrade and improve Bauleni Primary School into a state of the art ultra-modern secondary school equipped with necessary equipment.

President Lungu said his government is committed to providing secondary education to Bauleni residents in line with the vision of late President Michael Sata who built and opened the school in 1982 when he was area councilor.

The president implored teachers to ensure that pupils learn and appreciate the meaning and value of the national anthem.

He said the national anthem identifies with the country’s history, background and identity which must be passed on to all pupils.

President Lungu later distributed hampers to the excited pupils whom he challenged to work hard in school so that they can contribute to national development.

And speaking earlier Bauleni Primary School Headmaster Sikubele Wambinji said the school has 2,039 pupils and are serviced by 45 teachers of which 43 are females.

Area Member of Parliament Margaret Mwanakatwe told the pupils that they were blessed as the Head of State had chosen to visit them on New Year’s Day.

Mrs Mwanakatwe said government is committed to arresting the cholera situation in Lusaka and that is why it had closed Bauleni’s Katambalala market and other markets including Soweto and the central business district in order to clean up the areas and put in place long lasting remedial measures to arrest the spread of cholera in Lusaka.

And earlier at Bauleni Clinic, President Lungu presented hampers to five New Year babies born at the health facility between midnight and 10 hrs today.

The five are two boys namely Mwila Katumwende and Misheck Kasonde and the girls being Blessing Mutale, Vainess Mumba and Favour Phiri.

President Lungu advised the mothers of the New Year babies to look after the children well and ensure that they are in good health.
