Promote construction knowledge sharing

7

CHINA Jiangxi Corporation says there is need to promote skills transfer and knowledge sharing in the construction sector to enable local people to make meaningful contribution to the growth of the country’s economy.

Company head of logistical services Emmanuel Mutale said the firm is committed to the promotion of human integral development in Zambia through delivery of infrastructure development.

“The corporation’s focus is to ensure Zambians enjoy modern world-class standards in infrastructure wherever it [China Jiangxi] has been awarded a contract, be it roads, airports, and many other important buildings.

“To appreciate efforts of local Zambians who are working hard to take the corporation’s existence to another level, China Jiangxi has started exposing its employees to new technologies for them to learn and appreciate advanced levels of development to be replicated back home,” he said in an interview yesterday.

Recently, a delegation was sent to China as a spirit of integration and to enable Zambians acquire necessary skills.

Mr Mutale said the firm believes in collective effort to enable local people to contribute positively to the national development agenda.

He said Zambians are capable of undertaking any infrastructure development project
“If only we embrace the spirit of hard work and selflessness, Zambia will be a great country in the coming years. While in China, we were exposed to many great works.

“Selflessness and undoubted patriotism are principles that have made our colleagues unique. We need to embrace such attributes as Zambians for us to develop,” he said.

And one of the delegates, who is also the company’s quantity surveyor Janice Kabwe said there is a lot to learn from the Chinese in terms of work culture, commitment, dedication and patriotism to the country.

“These ideals must be embraced for Zambia to reach such levels of development. Many Chinese cities that we visited are a marvel to watch,” she said.

Kalaba Rainford being challenged by Omeruo Kenneth Josiah and Echiejile Elederson
Kalaba Rainford being challenged by Omeruo Kenneth Josiah and Echiejile Elederson

By Mathews Kabamba , Kitwe

WHILE soccer icon Kalusha Bwalya gave Rainford Kalaba his senior Chipolopolo debut 12 years ago, current national team coach Wedson Nyirenda appears to be one that handed ‘The Master’ his last appearance in national colours.

On his unveiling as Chipolopolo trainer last year, Nyirenda preached a change of mindset by players in his quest to restore the country’s lost glory on the continent.

Nyirenda warned of wholesale but gradual changes to the team, which has relatively underperformed since winning the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon in 2012.

“My coming is purely to rebuild, but taking two things, while rebuilding we are looking at qualifying for the World Cup, so that is where the challenge becomes hard.

“Am I under pressure? I am one person who loves challenges. I have been in such situations before and I have come out with good performances. And before I came to Zesco United, I was written off but I did what I could do and today Zesco is a darling of Africa,” Nyirenda said.

Nyirenda has been preaching rebuilding and discipline since the first day he took over the mantle at the senior national team, but has received some criticism in the manner he is going about this issue.

On June 10 during a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mozambique at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Kalaba went straight to the dressing room after being substituted for Given Singuluma in the second-half.

Zambia went on to lose 1-0.

A few weeks later, Nyirenda told the media that Kalaba would be disciplined ahead of the Algerian encounter. It did not need to take a fortune teller to know that Kalaba would not make the squad.

Kalaba responded to Nyirenda in the media the following day “I got permission from the assistant coaches before going to the dressing room just after I was substituted. I got permission to take a shower. I am the captain and would not want to disrespect the coach.”

Last Tuesday, Nyirenda announced a 32-member provisional squad ahead of the must-win Russia World Cup qualifier against Algeria set for Saturday.

The TP Mazembe midfielder is suspended for the first leg after accumulating two yellow cards against Nigeria and Cameroon, but is eligible for the return leg, thus his omission from the provisional squad seems to have signalled the beginning of the end of Kalaba’s national team career.

After shining at Under-17 and 20 levels, Kalaba made his maiden senior appearance as a teenager in a Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Senior Challenge Cup’s 3-0 win over Swaziland at Woodlands Stadium in which he also contributed a goal.

From there on, Kalaba has made 100 appearances for the Chipolopolo, scoring 15 goals in his 12-year career.

Kalaba has played in 19 international friendlies, 23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, 16 World Cup qualifiers and 18 matches at the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The former Zesco United and Afrisport midfielder has played nine matches for Zambia in the COSAFA Cup while turning up five times in the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Senior Challenge Cup.

His is part of Zambia’s golden generation that bagged Chipolopolo’s maiden Africa Cup title under the tutelage of Frenchman Herve Renard after beating Ivory Cost 8-7 on penalties in Libreville in 2012.

Talented as he is, Kabala has polarised opinion among pundits and fans across the country.

Kalaba was appointed Chipolopolo skipper on January 7, 2015 before the Africa Cup finals in Equatorial Guinea, taking over from Russia-based defender Stopilla Sunzu.

Zambian football historian and statistician Daniel Kaoma describes Kalaba’s two-year stint at the helm of the team as uninspiring.

“Since 1964, when Zambia got affiliated to FIFA, we have had something close to 38 captains for Chipolopolo.

Kalaba’s reign as captain can be described as just one of those.

“He is the type of captain that has failed to provide leadership…he is one who when the team, is sinking does not fight to save the team, rather he would sink with the team,” Kaoma said.

Journalist Paul Siambala faces terrorism charge

17

Journalist Paul Siambala

Zambia police have continued holding former Kariba FM station manager Paul Siambala for alleged  terrorism.

Mr Siambala who appeared in a Kalomo Magistrates courton Monday together with a United Party for National Development (UPND) cadre Amoni Mweembe stands charged with one count of terrorism and has been denied bail.

Mr Siambala is yet to appear on Wednesday for hearing of his bail application after the state denied him bail arguing that the offence he faces is of capital punishment by nature and is non bailable.

Its alleged Siambala is being punished for his alleged links with the opposition UPND where it is  claimed he is in the media committee.

He was arrested  in Choma and has been in detention for close to two months, has been transferred from one prison to another.

It is alleged that the duo, whilst acting together with other unknown people did conspire to carry acts of terrorism on public installations and structures which included the Kalomo and Kafue bridges.

Last week the police tortured Siamabla who they kept detained at Lilayi police training school cells without food and water for two days.

He is currently detained at Kalomo state prison as he awaits his bail application. The charge which Siambala faces carries up to life imprisonment with hard labour if found guilty.

And journalists in the country have called upon the Media Institute for Southern Africa – MISA Zambia to step into the matter and help defend Siambala but MISA board  has refused to help the incarcerated member because of the unfounded allegations of him having links with the UPND.

Siambala’s past stints include at the national broadcaster, Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation – ZNBC, SABC Correspondent and Sky FM before he set up his consultancy firm where he trains journalist and provides professional services to already established media houses.

ZCF installs 500 solar powered hammer mills so far

The Zambia Corporative Federation (ZCF) says it has installed more than 500 solar powered hammer mills country wide, out of its national target of 2000.

ZCF Director Projects Derrick Sokoni says the institution had a target of up to December 2018 to fully complete the installation of the hammer mills across the country.

ZANIS reports that Mr Sokoni said this in an interview in Lusaka today.

“We have installed about 567 solar hammer mills out of the 2000 country wide target. The project started in 2015 and we are targeting by end of December next year to be done with the project,” he said.

The hammer mills were improving the living standards of most communities in the country as it reduced the cost of production of mealie meal, he said.

The ZCF Director Projects said the institution was also creating jobs for most youths as it was training them to be operators of the hammer mills.

Mr Sokoni said ZCF had trained more than 400 Grade twelve school leavers to operate the machines as they were delicate and required at least a grade 12 school leaver to operate them.

He said out of the 400 youths, about 296 were trained in Eastern Province and about 50 in Northern Province and about 54 in Luapula province to ensure that the machines where operational and that no hammer mill was left idle.

Government to come up with strategies for improved work culture

Joyce Nonde-Simukoko
Joyce Nonde-Simukoko

Government says it will soon introduce strategies that will boost work productivity in the labour force in the country.

Minister of Labour and Social Security Joyce Simukoko said that her ministry would introduce the productivity policy before the end of this year to help improve the Zambian work culture.

She said in an interview that the policy has been tabled before parliament adding that when it is passed it will provide a systematic approach to promote work performance.

And the Minister has called on the industrial relations to provide a good work environment for workers to effectively perform without any barriers in the work fraternity.

“We also want the environment where people are working to be clean, to be conducive, we have observed that in most institutions only chief executive offices are clean and well ventilated but where other people are working it is not conducive, so we will be inspecting the working environment workers are exposed to,” she said.

She said it will be mandatory for management in organizations to put in place a safety and health committee that would facilitate the compliance of the new policy.

And Mrs Simukoko noted the need to revamp the Zambian work force because unproductivity is a form of theft from government.

“Our work culture is bad, our productivity levels are only three percent instead of seven percent so we need to stop lazing around and be committed to doing our work properly,” she observed.

“If we have to develop this country, we have no choice but to work very hard and God is very clear, that we have to sweat for us to find food, so for all those who loiter around, who don’t put in the eight hours of work they unlike the required hours should even stop going to church because they are stealing from government.”

Mrs Simukoko said Zambians should emulate work attitude from some foreign nationals in the country to boost productivity.

ZICTA calls for more players in IT

5

Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) is inviting more business players to explore the mobile service market so as to enhance quality of services.

ZICTA Corporate Communications Manager Ngabo Nankonde says more business players mean more competition and hence service providers will be compelled to deliver good services.

ZANIS reports Ms. Nankonde saying in an interview today that increased participation by the players will in turn be advantageous to consumers.

She however, said the regulator is being cautious to ensure only business players who are up to the task are allowed on the market.

“We don’t want a situation where we open the market to business players who will shut down their companies after three months of operation. We won’t allow anyone to come on the market anyhow,” she stated.

And Ms. Nankonde said ZICTA is doing inspections to check the quality performance of service providers, compliance to the set regulations among others.

She also urged consumers to demand for good services from service providers.

“We urge consumers to dial the ZICTA Consumer Protection Line;7070 (on all networks) for complaints. However, you have to start with the service provider so that they give you a reference number which you present to us,” she said.

She added that the regulator only deals with issues service providers take long to respond to.

He said the walk will start at 10:00 Hours to about 11:00hrs when he will be handing in the petition to Mr Kanganja.

“As EEP, we are very grateful to the Police for allowing us to stage this protest. We hope this is a sign of change in the Police,” he said.

Mweene talks Zambia U20 and Mahrez

15

Zambia captain Kennedy Mweene has stressed that the best players in training will play on Saturday against Algeria in the match they must win to maintain their interest in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Group B qualifiers.

Seven Zambia Under-20 stars from last March’s 2017 U20 AFCON winning team that later reached the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea in June, have been called up to stake a place in the senior team.

Mweene said that everyone in the team knew the importance of the match and that it had nothing to do with personalities or experience.

“It’s not about age but who wants it more,” Mweene said on day one if training in Lusaka.

“We have a lot of youngsters with energy and we expect a positive result.”

Midfielder Emmanuel Banda of KV Oostende in Belgium ,striker Patson Daka of Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and Fashion Sakala of Spartak Moscow in Russia are part of the Under-20 call-ups expected on Monday.

Enock Mwepu of Liefering in Austria was part of Monday morning’s first training sessions at Woodlands Stadium in Lusakatigether with Mweene,Chisamba Lungu of FC Ural in Russia and Roderick Kabwe of Ajax Cape Town.

Mweene added that the presence of Leicester City striker and 2016 African footballers of the year Riyad Mahrez in the Algeria, was not a major factor to get intimidated.

“Not really a game of football is played 11-against-11 players and at the end of the day, football played in Europe is different from the way you play in Africa,” Mweene added.

Zambia and Algeria head into September 2 date at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka tied on 1 point each after two rounds of matches played and are one point behind 2nd placed Cameroon and a further five points adrift of leaders Nigeria.

Algeria will host Zambia in their final leg Group B meeting three days later in Constantine on September 5.

Nigeria hosts Cameroon this Friday in Uyo.

Hon Kang’ombe should appologize to the people of Chipata Compound -Chishimba

23
Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang'ombe
Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe

As a true nationalist and patriot, in my quest and endeavor to rekindle true patriotism in Zambia, I believe that we need leaders with deeper sincerity of motive, a greater courage in speech and earnestness in action. I have chosen not to side with mediocre patriotism in the hope of getting favors from leaders who expend it. I believe in objectivity both in speech and in deeds. I give credit where it’s due and positive criticism where necessary. I have chosen always to side with and speak for the vulnerable, voiceless, oppressed, poor and minority no matter the consequences. This article is not an eventuality of hatred or bitterness but disappointment and an attempt to make sure that leaders walk their image.

When, his Worship the Mayor of Kitwe, Christopher Kang’ombe’s grandfather owned one of the biggest butcheries in Kitwe town centre in the 1980’s called “Kitwe Meat Market”, he did a lot of good things in terms of helping a lot of vulnerable people not only in Kitwe, but a lot of other places in the country. When I heard of Hon Kang’ombe’s leadership in the mainstream populace, I thought there was an incarnation of actions as portrayed by his grandfather. I guess I may have been wrong.

I joined market politics in 2014 out of the conviction of wanting to make peoples lives at the market better. I was even incarcerated with trumped up charges for protesting against Riverside market hiked water contributions charge. In 2016 I unsuccessfully contested as councillor for Riverside ward even though I was voted for overwhelmingly. That is when I started learning with disappointment about Mr Kang’ombe’s real image other than the one he portrays to the people on the media.

Riverside ward comprises of Chipata compound and Riverside area. Hon kang’ombe became councillor in 2005 for Riverside ward. He was the councillor for two terms, i.e ten years. In Chipata up to now, there is no government school, no bus station, no police post and no clinic. There was an incident last year where a woman in labour gave birth at a place where there were red ants (impashi).Another incident happened where because there’s no police post in the area it took the police two days to go and remove a dead body which was found at the banks of Kafue River.

Land was allocated for building a clinic and a school, Hon Kang’ombe has built three mansions on the piece of land and the other space has been sold out. They are now saying they are looking for four people who will agree to give their houses to the council so that they are given another piece of land across Kafue River, in new Kitwe. We all know that’s a long story.

During the 2016 mayoral campaigns Hon Kang’ombe went back to Chipata for campaigns, the people asked him to Sonta(point where he had worked) unfortunately he failed.Between 2011 and 2016 after Hon Kang’ombe had joined PF in 2011, students at The Copperbelt University faced a lot of trials, tribulations and persecutions from the government, where the then minister of Higher Education Hon Michael Kaingu ignorantly even threatened to scrap off meal allowances for students without knowing that its a statutory Intrument, others were even expelled.

As a former CBU student and a youth we expected more from him, but never did he at any one point come to the aid of students. There are only 3 notable developments in the area, Mufuchani bridge which was funded by World Bank in 2003, Riverside police post which was donated by Riverside residents and inactive Parks which were commissioned by Hon Kang’ombe.

If he is an honorable man I want him to publicly apologise to the people of Chipata compound for selling plots which were allocated to them for building a clinic and a school. I also want him to apologise to CBU students who at that time vested so much faith him.

[pullquote]I am not in politics to be nice to office bearers, I am here to bring change without fear or favor[/pullquote]

In conclusion, “I am not in politics to be nice to office bearers, I am here to bring change without fear or favor”. If an individual is outraged by the nobility and sincerity of my actions and words, that is their own baby to nurse because “history shall absolve me”.

Youth Urged to Stop Getting Involved in Disputes of Political Leaders

6

Youth from political parties have agreed to push their political parties to elect ‘real youth’ as leaders of youth wings.

And some youth have called on fellow youths to stop involving themselves in the political disputes of their leaders because it is not their fight.

The youths who met during a capacity building workshop for women youths from various political parties on Saturday said having youth leaders who are not youthful has affected the Youth agenda in the country hence the need to have leaders who share the challenges faced by youths in the country.

Jones Mulunga who was one of the facilitators of the workshop said youths should not expect people who are not youths themselves to help them push for their agenda.

He said most youth leaders in political parties are not youths but have held the positions so as to use them for personal gains.

“It is high time that we told leaders in our parties that we don’t want youths chairmen who are 54 years old. Let a youth leader be a youth. How do you expect a 54 or more years to push for your agenda even in your individual parties.

“We have so many challenges as young people and of the reasons these challenges are not being addressed is because the people we have chosen to be our leaders are not in our group. They are youth chairmen who are in those position because they want to use them to negotiate for personal things no wonder you find that instead addressing our issues they make us fight,” he said.

He said the only way youths will effectively participate in the governance of the country is by reclaiming their rightful positions in their political parties.

Meanwhile some youths advised fellow youths in political parties to stay away from the disputes between political leaders because it is not their fight.

Samual N’gwira who is from UPND said the leaders who are seen to be at each other’s throats in the media share drinks when they meet.

He said it is sad that youths are used to fight the battles they hardly understand when there is so much on their plates.

He wondered why a young person from UPND should insult a leader of PF on behalf of his leaders when the said leaders share contracts even among themselves.

He urged fellow youths to preoccupy themselves with issues that can contribute to the wellbeing land the country at large.

The workshop which was organised by the Centre for Young Leaders in Africa was attended by over 40 young women from different political parties.

State House clarifies on Maimane, Malema saga

Amos Chanda
Amos Chanda

Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda has clarified that President Edgar Lungu did not summon the opposition political party leaders from South Africa, but requested to have a talk with them directly.

Amos Chanda said he does not understand why the matter has been trivialized when the opposition leaders agreed to visit the president but rescinded their decision on the last minute.

Mr. Chanda said the President wanted to meet the two opposition leaders so that he could engage in talks with them directly rather than them picketing from outside the country.

He said there should be no fuss on the matter because the DA Leader Mmusi Maimane and his EEF counterpart Julius Malema had agreed in the first instance but just their decision a few hours later.

The matter in which UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema and his vice Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba are appearing in the Luanshya magistrate court has been adjourned to September 18,2017 after the duo reported sick.

This is in a matter in which the duo is charged with three counts of seditious practices and unlawful assembly contrary to the laws of Zambia.

In count one and two, Mr. Hichilema and Mr. Mwamba were charged individually with seditious practices contrary to the laws of Zambia.

In count three, the two were jointly charged with unlawful assembly contrary to section 75 as read with section 74 of the Penal Code and regulation of the Public Order Act.

Particulars are that the accused number one, Mr. Hichilema, 54, of house number 14/38 Sable road Kabulonga on September 26 ,2016 in Mpongwe did conspire with others unknown to bring into hatred, incite violence, resistance, and disobedience to the administration of the elected government of Zambia by uttering words namely “nga taba mufumishe Matambo, epo ulubuli lwalatampila (if they do not release Matambo, that’s when the fight will start)”.

In count two, Mr. Mwamba, 57, of house number 10 Roan Road, Kabulonga, was charged with seditious practices.

It is alleged that on September, 26, 2016 in Mpongwe, accused number two, Mr. Mwamba did conspire with others unknown to bring into hatred, incite violence, resistance, and disobedience to the administration of the elected government of Zambia by uttering words namely “ifwe pano nga ba UPND tufwile twakana iyi government yakwa Lungu; ngabamyeba ati kuli ama meeting yaba Lungu mulekana, pantu president wesu ni HH (as UPND, we should reject Lungu’s government. When they tell you that there are going to be some meetings chaired by Lungu, don’t go there because our president is HH)”.

In count three, it is alleged that on September 26th 2016 in Mpongwe being in a public place jointly and whilst acting together with others unknown the duo did convene, assemble unlawfully with intent to carry out some common purpose without notifying the regulating officer.
When the matter came up for continued trial today, the defence informed court that the two accused were unable to attend court.

Defence lawyer Mulilo Kabesha presented two medical reports for the accused.
“First accused person is undergoing medical attention and we have medical reports from Lusaka Trust Hospital which gave him five days as being unfit for work starting from 24 August 2017,” Mr Kabesha told the court.

“Second accused has been unwell and was initially admitted to CFB, and given sick note indicating that he was unfit for work. We have information that his condition is not improving and has since been taken out of the country for further medical attention. We apply for an adjournment, that being the case.”

The state did not object to the application by the defence team of Mulilo Kabesha, Tom Shamakamba and Chimuka Magubwi.

Magistrate Mbuzi then adjourned the matter to September 18, 2017 for continued trial.

Leaders Know Your Emotional Intelligence

13

Leadership plays an important role in our families, local and international communities, churches and other places of worship and places of employment. The strength and endurance of each of these institutions will largely depend on whether leaders possess high emotional intelligence (EI). Leaders with deficient EI can often be dangerous to themselves and to those they lead. This article defines EI, five of its most important characteristics, and the leadership implications of each characteristic.
What is Emotional Intelligence?

EI (also referred to as EQ) is a term created by two researchers – Peter Salavoy and John Mayer – and popularized by Dan Goleman in his 1996 book of the same name. It is defined as the ability to recognize, understand and manage one’s own emotions and to recognize, understand and influence the emotions of others.

Leaders ought to be aware of the impact of their emotions which will often shape their behaviour and either have a positive or negative impact on those they lead. Despite this, many corporate, community and national leaders appear to lack any sense of EI. This could explain why many leaders appear oblivious to the consequences of their actions on those they lead.

It is important to appreciate that leadership is not restricted to a chosen few. At some level, we all assume positions of leadership, be it in a family context as husbands, wives, fathers, mothers and siblings or in the broader community, religious and employment contexts. Since we are all leaders, we ought to examine ourselves and be aware of the need for high EI. This ensures that we are better equipped to demonstrate effective leadership for the benefit of those we lead.

Critical to this goal is the need to learn to manage our emotions and influence the emotions of others in a way that will result in better relationships that are more likely to release our God-given potential as leaders. To this end, it is worth considering the five key characteristics of EI identified by Goleman which are: (a) self-awareness; (b) self-regulation; (c) motivation; (d) empathy; and (e) social skills.

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness involves recognizing and understanding our own emotions and motivations and their impact on others. To be able to recognise emotions leaders must clearly identify what they feel. This can range from fear, anger/rage, envy, hatred, self-attention, anxiety, sorrow, grief, despair, dejection, frustration, joy, trust, anticipation, high spirit, kindness, or love.
To understand our emotions it is essential that we discern the reasons behind it. If fear is the emotion, is it because of the wrongs you have done and you are afraid the truth may be revealed, or is your fear driven by the concern that having assumed a position of leadership, you will one day have to step aside? If envy is the emotion, is that emotion driven by jealousy of another person’s success, intelligence or popularity.

A genuine leader who remains alert to the drivers behind his or her emotions will stand a better chance of avoiding pitfalls that present when emotions are not kept in check. In the political context, leaders will often succumb to the abuse of instruments of power and government institutions to cover up wrong deeds, target opponents and corruptly amass wealth. Behaviour that results from fear, hatred, and envy is more likely to present as a reign of terror, intolerance of divergent views, suppression of freedoms and human rights and outright impunity as regards laws of the land. A fearful, hateful, and envious leader is likely to have no confidence and self-worth. He or she may even find it difficult to accept and appreciate those that helped elevate him or her to that position of leadership.

Self-Regulation

Self-regulation simply means the exercise of self-control and restraint. Ultimately, self-regulation is the capacity to delay or stop our impulses. When faced with emotions it is better not to act in the heat of the moment but rather reign in our emotions and use the head and not the heart (seat of emotions) before responding.

The Bible says in 1John 2:16 and 17:
16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.
17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

Our lives are bombarded by the three “Ps” in verse 16: passion (lust of the flesh), pleasure (lust of the eyes), and pride. These are powerful forces that may drive our behaviour in ways that are not compatible with God’s expectation if we are not able to regulate ourselves. It is in pursuit of these vices that many leaders in all spheres of life have failed their accountability test as leaders.

Self-Motivation

Leaders cannot be effective without motivation. Self-motivation involves mobilising our positive emotions to drive us to our goals. A leader with high EI will likely have a deep desire to succeed in his or her leadership role. Those positive emotions include joy at seeing other people succeed, love for those we lead, kindness towards the weak and vulnerable.
Where a person possessing such traits assumes a position of leadership, his or her pre-occupation is more likely to be focused on creating and fostering a conducive environment for tranquillity and prosperity of his or her constituents. Such a leader would also have a clear vision that would drive his or her own behaviour and influence the behaviour of those constituents.
Contrast the above to a leader with low EI who will instead seek to amass wealth, power and status at all cost, as a result of negative emotions such as fear, anger, grief, envy, and shame. The instruments of power in the hands of such a leader would therefore be used for self-serving purposes to the detriment of that leader’s constituents.

Empathy

Empathy is the experience of understanding another person’s condition from their perspective. You place yourself in another’s shoes and feel what they are feeling. A leader with high EI is empathetic such that he or she is able to understand the despair, sorrow, and grief of the weak and the less fortunate. Such a leader would be concerned with the welfare of his or her constituents and would use their position of power and influence for their benefit. Like Jesus Christ, an empathetic leader would not be master but a servant.
In contrast to the above, an un-empathetic leader can be dangerous. Traits that characterise such a leader include brutality, cruelty, deception, evil, hateful, inhumane, malicious, mercilessness, and sadistic. Such a leader takes pleasure in the suffering of others.

Social Skills

Social skills are the skills we use to communicate and interact with each other, including both verbal and non-verbal means of communication and interaction. The Bible has many scriptures that illustrate the point that our communication comes from deep within our hearts. A good leader will do well to “watch over your heart with diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. Jesus Christ said:
No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from briers. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

Jesus thus provides us with the tools with which to test our leaders’ social skills. Becoming a good leader takes effort, it does not come on a silver platter. Watching over your heart takes deliberate personal effort. It requires self-improvement. You have to be a long-life learner, though it is never too late to start afresh. This means that even leaders who are driven by bad emotions can be transformed through learning and by the grace of God from communicating by means of threats and fear-mongering to guiding their constituents with inspiration. In that regard, a good leader will use persuasion and negotiation to manage conflict and not brutal suppression of dissent.

Conclusion

The various characteristics of EI outlined above are important tenets for effective leaders. Leaders that lack emotional intelligence can be dangerous to themselves and the people they lead. Leadership can be learned, but above all it must be driven by a deep desire to succeed for the good of one’s constituents.
