State broadcaster ZNBC has withdrawn adverts for the popular drink Ama Sip Sip which featured Congolese artiste Koffi Olomide as the fell out over his violent conduct towards his female dancer continues.

A source within ZNBC management confirmed that the decision to stop airing all adverts featuring committee was taken by management at its Monday Senior Management Team meeting.

The source said ZNBC wanted to send a strong message to the nation that it does not condone violent conduct against anyone especially directed towards defenceless women.

The source further said that the manufacturer of Ama Sip Sip, Trade Kings has since been notified of the management decision.

ZNBC Head of Corporate Affairs Masuzyo Ndhovu and Trade Kings Media Manager James Songwe were both not available to independently confirm the development.

Meanwhile, the Agriculture and Show Society of Zambia has decided to invite another Congolese artiste Werrason after cancelling Koffi’s shows in Lusaka.

In a statement, Society President Ben Soko said Werrason will also perform at the Mulungushi Conference Centre on Friday, 29 July 2016 and that the tickets which were purchased for the Koffi show are still valid and can be accepted at Werrason’s shows.

Recapitalising Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe will broaden Government’s revenue sources-Hikaumba

FORMER Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Leonard Hikaumba has said recapitalising Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe will broaden Government’s revenue sources and help achieve Zambia’s economic diversification efforts.

Mr Hikaumba said in an interview that revamping the textile giant was vital to Zambia’s development agenda because it would also result in job opportunities and provide a market for local cotton producers.

He said the development was timely because it would provide the Zambian economy with an additional viable source of revenue in the face of unstable and declining copper prices.

“The recapitalisation of the company will result in ripple effects such as supporting agriculture and creating employment opportunities for Zambians,” Mr Hikaumba said.

He said the increased availability of locally-produced clothing would make the people access quality and durable clothing.

He said an operational textiles industry would create a ready market for local cotton producers whose produce had experienced a reduction in demand due to non-availability of a textiles industry in Zambia.

Mr Hikaumba said the second-hand clothing industry in Zambia had flourished under the poor local clothing industry.

“People have resorted to buying second-hand clothing because the new clothes are imported and expensive.

“But with the coming on board of Mulungushi Textiles, consumers will be able to buy cheap and durable clothing which is locally produced,” he said.

The Zambia Cotton Ginners Association (ZCGA) said it welcomed the revival of the textile firm as the move would promote value-addition to raw lint.

“We have always supported initiatives aimed at adding value to our lint which is being exported in its raw form, and the revamping of the textile plant in Kabwe is the way to go and has been long overdue,” ZCGA executive secretary Bourne Chooka said in response to a Press query.

The Agricultural and commercial society of Zambia has replaced the Congolese musician Koffi Olomide who was scheduled to perform in the country with fellow Congolese super star Werasson.

The Society was forced to replace Koffi after he was deported from Kenya after a video of the legendary musician beating up one of his female dancers went viral.

Show Society President Ben Shoko announced in a show statement that they will now be bringing Werasson to perform on Friday at the Mulungushi.

Mr Shoko also said all the tickets purchased are valid and that people should buy tickets in advance so as to avoid delayed entry.

The Post Newspaper created its own problems-Sam Phiri

Former Information and Broadcasting Permanent Secretary in the Rupiah Banda administration Sam Phiri says the tragedy facing the Post Newspapers today is self-inflicted.

Dr Phiri said the problem with The Post is not that they owe Zambia Revenue Authority or the Development Bank of Zambia but that the newspaper helped create and sustain the monster which is now feasting on their carcass.

“Prior to 2011, The Post campaigned for and provided logistical and strategic support to what will go down in Zambia’s history as one of the most incompetent, retributive and brutal leadership of Michael Sata,” Dr Phiri said.

He said upon taking over government, The Post ensured that their protégées were infiltrated into critical positions of Government from State House, Ministry of Information, Legal Affairs into the foreign service.

“Not less than 10 Post employees went into Government and the Post enjoyed unfettered access to power and Government contracts including the printing and distribution of the draft Constitution,” he said.

“For three years thereafter, The Post sustained Sata’s ruthlessness and the erratic, sarcastic, irascible governance. But then Sata died. One of the last persons to ‘see’ Sata alive in Britain was M’membe. In the political tussles for succession within the PF, The Post sided with Sata’s nephew who lost to Edgar Chagwa Lungu.”

He added, “Then those who were victimised by Sata in the three years of his residence at State House, found a new home within the wings of Edgar Chagwa Lungu. It’s now retribution all over again! This time against The Post. That is the context of the tragedy of The Post.”

Dr Phiri said if late President Sata’s nephew was leader of the PF, The Post could have been home and dry.

“Now pity The Post for having fed the lion which is attempting to swallow them, against all the newspaper’s good sense. They knew what character they were taking into State House and all we see now is the legacy of The Post’s support. The Post were wrong in the past and what is happening to them is wrong.”

The Presidential Empowerment Initiative Fund (PEIF) initiated by President Edgar Lungu last year as a vehicle for poverty alleviation through empowerment of traders has disbursed a K12 million to vendors and marketeers across the country.

An additional 4,000 bicycles valued at K4 million and 40 motor cycles valued at K800,000 has also been distributed as part of this on-going national empowerment initiative.

This was disclosed by PEIF Chief Executive Officer, Mr Joseph Chilinda during the handover of 150 bicycles to traders in Mporokoso and Chilubula over the weekend.

And more than 400 traders in Mporokoso are earmarked to start receiving interest free cash loans through National Savings Bank during the course of this week following completion of the details verification exercise.

Mr Chilinda, who was accompanied by the PEIF Patron Chanda Kabwe who is also Kitwe District Commissioner and President of the Association of Vendors and Marketeers in Zambia Able Chikwa explained that the initiative was making a huge difference and had greatly helped hundreds of traders to boost their businesses.

“From the feedback that we are getting, we are happy that this programme is changing a lot of lives. Bicycles for example are making it easy for traders to transport their merchandise, thereby reducing the cost of doing business, improving levels of income and profitability,” he explained.

Mr Chilinda appealed to the traders to pay back the interest-free loans in the stipulated time so that the money could be given to other traders in order that more people could benefit from the initiative.
And Mr Kabwe told the traders that President Lungu had the interests of vendors and marketeers at heart and wanted to see them empowered because they played an important role in the economy of the country.

Meanwhile, the Association of Vendors and Marketeers in Zambia has paid glowing tribute to President Lungu for being very passionate about the vendors and marketeers and for coming up with the empowerment initiative which was changing the lives of the marketeers.

“For a long time now our cry as vendors and marketeers has been with regard to the difficulties and challenges we face in accessing capital and transporting our goods. We are glad that Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu has been the first President to respond to our cries and came up with this empowerment fund in addition to the many developmental projects that he is implementing across the country,” said Mr Chikwa.

And the recipients of the bicycles in Mporokoso and Chilubula praised President Lungu for caring about the vendors and marketeers.

“I would like to thank the President for this initiative. We used to struggle a lot to raise capital and to transport our goods from one point to another. But now with this help us a lot. We have hope that things will be better,” said Mr Katai, a bicycle recipient.

Konkola Copper Mines Chairman Tom Albanese says the health and safety of employees is a top priority in the company because healthy employees are more engaged, productive and have a higher morale.

Mr. Albanese, who is also Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KCM’s parent company, Vedanta Resources Plc, said the health of employees is of critical importance as the company seeks to drive Vedanta’s 50-year vision to continue mining in Zambia.

Speaking to several employees at the KCM Head Office in Chingola, Mr. Albanese said: “we have a 50-year vision for this company. We need you to be healthy to help the company realise the vision hence the need to implement such wellness programmes that promote the health of the workers.”

Mr. Albanese urged employees to live healthy lives by engaging in exercises and maintaining a good diet.

The health initiative will involve employees walking at least 10,000 steps every day to keep fit and getting involved in sporting activities such as football, netball, volleyball, cycling and others.

Mr. Albanese noted that the current challenges facing the company as a result of poor global economic fundamentals, especially low copper price, and a nationwide power deficit would not stop KCM from pursuing its goals to increase copper production through various initiatives, including cost reduction.

“We will prevail despite the challenges we are facing. Together we can do it. We will come out stronger. That is why we need you to be healthy and have strength in your body and in your mind,” he said.

And KCM CEO Steven Din said during the launch that the ‘Nchingilile Ubumi’ campaign does not only encourage employee fitness but also creates a platform for team building and social interaction.

“Initiatives such as Nchingilile Ubumi signify the importance of team building and working together for a common cause. KCM management hopes that such activities will have a positive impact on individuals as well as the organisation,” Mr Din Said.

Mr Din said it was imperative for all employees to remain steadfast and focused on increasing production.

The GREEN party has urged Zambians to vote Yes in the referendum on 11 August this year.

Party Secretary General Daniel Sichilongo said the proposed Bill of Rights was very progressive as it would enhance rights of an individual adding that Zambians have an opportunity of having a document that would stand a taste of time.

Mr Sichilongo said the Green party had made it clear that the people of Zambia should vote Yes in the referendum.

He said the Bill of Rights was not politically oriented but bordered on one’s freedom in a country like Zambia.

Mr Sichilongo was speaking in an interview in Livingstone today.

“The proposed Bill of Rights is very progressive and Zambians should turn out in large numbers and give a big resounding yes vote in in the referendum.

“Political parties are many, us as Green party, we have made it clear that the people of Zambia should vote yes to the referendum because you must understand that these human rights are not political party oriented but border on one’s freedom,” he said.

He lashed out at political parties that were calling for people to vote against the referendum and warned them against politicising the issue of the referendum.

“It is a sham that some political parties are telling people not to vote yes in the referendum, it is high time that Zambians did away with mediocrity because politics of mediocrity and greediness are long gone.

“Let us champion causes that will champion for the development of the country and not cheap and petty politics,” he said.

Livingstone based magistrate Benjamin Mwelwa, said the proposed Bill of Rights was the best that the nation has ever had in a civilised society of Zambia.

“The document is actually the best when you compare it with the ones we have had. When you go through it you will realise that it enhances and includes more rights and I can confess that it is the best document,” he said.

The Zambia Youth Workers Association (ZYWA) has urged youths across the country to turn up in large numbers and vote yes in the referendum on 11thAugust,2016.

“ZYWA is very happy that under Article 49,the bill of rights provides that youths have rights to personal development, participation in governance, and access to gainful employment’’, Mr. Nyasulu said.

Mr. Nyasulu stated that government’s tireless effort of ensuring that the bill of rights provides for youth participation in the social economic, political and cultural affairs of the nation need rewarding through a YES vote.

He urged young people to take interest in the voting process in the referendum and chart the way for their personal and collective development.

I’m supporting FDD because of their devolution of power Policy-Mulongoti

16

Mike Mulongoti
Mike Mulongoti
Former Government Spokesperson and People’s Party President Mike Mulongoti says that he endorsed Edith Nawakwi for the Presidency in the forth coming General Elections because the PF has failed to deliver on its campaign promises.

Speaking when he featured on Radio Yangeni in Mansa yesterday. Mr Mulongoti said he was supporting FDD because of their devolution of power Policy which demands for decentralization for every Province to make their own decisions with government resources allocated to them. He said his party shared the same values and principles of FDD which allows people to govern themselves.

“When I started to support PF I told them that there are certain sections of their constitution and manifesto that they won’t fulfill but we worked together because we wanted to remove MMD from Government.
I Agree with FDD Manifesto because we formed It together with Nawakwi and others. I was the first person to be fired from government for opposing the third term. So the idea of supporting FDD is not new” he said.

Mr Mulongoti said the PF government has duped the people Luapula province about so many things which includes Frederick Chiluba University which doesn’t exist. He said the PF promised to bring water to the people of Mansa but they have failed when lake Bangweulu is only 72 Km from Mansa.

He said Nawakwi introduced Farmer Input Support which the PF has failed to manage by reducing the programe to 2 bags from 8 bags that were given in the MMD government.

He said during the MMD government used to build roads for K500,000 per kilometer but now the PF are building roads for K20million per KM when in South Africa they are using K5million per Kilometer. He said corruption has taken over road construction and he felt ashamed that he supported PF because they have gone quiet on the Fight Against Corruption which they were very vocal about before forming government the moment they formed government.

He said Luapula has large water bodies and yet no policy has been developed to empower citizens to promote the fish industry and That’s what FDD plans to do for the people.

He has urged Zambians to vote for a woman to end violence that has characterized the political scene and that Edith Nawakwi was the most qualified candidate to run for Presidency.

The Zambia Volunteers Network has commended youths from different political parties who attended a March against political violence on Saturday.

Speaking in an interview the Network Deputy Chairperson Gerald Chiluba said the youths from political parties should be commended because the gesture shows that young people are willing to stop violence.

Mr Chiluba said the coming together of youths from different political parties was a sign that the country is making head ways in the fight against political violence.

He said it important that the issue of political violence is dealt with from the roots and that youths were the people being used in perpetuating the scourge hence the march was a step in the right direction.

As a network we feel that the march past was aimed at reducing the political violence that we have seen increase in the country.
