UPND Rally

We have strong youth empowerment policies in our party such as provision of quality and affordable education, skills training and targeted loans facilities that will support investment in many sectors such tourism, small scale mining licenses, agriculture and other areas, says UPND President Hakainde Hichilema.

Speaking when he addressed thousands of Lusaka youths yesterday at NASDEC Sports Complex during the UPND concert dubbed ‘Youths Rock the Vote’ Mr. Hichilema bemoaned the high levels of unemployment among the youths in the country as reason for bad vices in society.

The UPND leader who was accompanied by his two Vice-Presidents Dr. Canisius Banda and Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) said Zambia need the UPND’s robust economic expansion and diversification programmes that will also give them decent job opportunities.

He called the youths across the country to be responsible citizens and refrain from being used as tools in political violence, avoid hate speech and language so as to promote unite and peace in the country.

Mr. Hichilema also appealed to the youths to go to various centers and obtain NRCs and Voters cards as a step towards ending unemployment, poverty and education.

Speaking at the same event UPND Vice President for Politics Dr. Canisius Banda thanked the youths for supporting the UPND but that they should vote out PF in 2016 as only UPND has a clear vision for job creation.

Meanwhile his counterpart for Administration GBM said that PF has failed to govern the country and has no message to sway Zambians anymore.

Mr. Mwamba, who just returned from Southern Province for party activities, told the youths that PF has failed to provide leadership hence laying that UPND is a tribal party.

He called on the Zambian youths not listen to tribal rhetoric being peddled by PF but look for the knowledgeable and capable UPND leadership.

Man gets 36 months for manslaughter

court

THE Kabwe High Court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to three years imprisonment for causing the death of his cousin.
Mrs Justice Elita Mwikisa jailed Rodgers Banda after he admitted one count of manslaughter.
Banda caused the death of Alex Mumbi on December 8, 2014 in Kabwe.
He was initially charged with murder, but the court reduced the charge to manslaughter.
Mrs Justice Mwikisa told Banda that the offence he committed is serious as he had caused the death of not only his workmate but his own relative.
“These are the consequences that you face because of drinking beer and you take the law in your own hands,” she Justice said.
Facts before the court are that on December 8 last year around 09:00 hours Banda and Mumbi left Farm number 22 where they were both employed as caretakers in Mpima area for a drinking spree.
The court heard that around 16:00 hours they decided to go back to the farm when they started quarrelling.
When they reached the farm they started fighting. Mumbi rushed into a house to get a knife and tried to stab Banda, who managed to get hold of the knife.
Banda grabbed the knife and stabbed Mumbi who sustained injuries and fell to the ground. He left Mumbi lying on the floor of the house.
A Mr Mweemba who was passing by the farm found Mumbi lying dead on the floor and informed Mr Kamanga, the owner of the farm.
Mr Kamanga took Mumbi’s body to Kabwe General Hospital mortuary and post-mortem results showed that Mumbi died of wounds inflicted by stabbing.
On December 12 last year Mumbi was officially charged with murder, which was later reduced to manslaughter.
Banda pleaded with the court to be lenient on him as he is a first offender who had admitted the charge without wasting the court’s time.
“Mumbi was not only my workmate but my relative as well and his death will continue to hurt me as long as I live,” Banda said.

President Lungu threatens to Nationalise Milling Plants and Introduce Price Controls on Mealie Meal

President EDGAR LUNGU has warned that Government will be compelled to introduce statutory price controls if Millers continue exploiting consumers. The President has further warned that Government might be forced to repossess milling plants or eject milling firms from the market if millers continue hiking mealie meal prices. President Lungu said the price of mealie meal is too high for the ordinary Zambian.

The Head of state said this at Luato Market in Kalulushi when he addressed scores of marketeers and residents. Mr Lungu wondered why millers have resorted to unnecessary hikes when they are buying the grain from farmers cheaply.

Mr. Lungu said there was no way milling companies and traders would continue hiking mealie-meal prices when the price of maize was low.

He said maize was available in the country and there was no way mealie-meal prices would be hiked.

President Lungu said government had the power to close milling companies if they did not comply, because mealie-meal was a staple food.

He further said government would control the price of mealie-meal if milling companies continue hiking the prices so as to stabilize the price.

Mr Lungu said he will be meeting the agriculture Minister Given Lubinda and cabinet to discuss and look at trends on the market where consumers are being exploited by millers.Earlier, President Lungu took time to tour the 270 million Kwacha National Pension scheme -NAPSA housing scheme.

And President Lungu says no lecturer will be fired from the Copperbelt University-CBU as a result of the misunderstanding between management and lecturers which led to student protests and subsequent premature closure. Mr. Lungu said that all the parties involved have put behind their past and have opened a new chapter, which will be anchored by dialogue and respect for one another.

The Head of State made the remarks when he met the executive of the Copperbelt University Students Union-COBUSU at the Presidential Guest House in Kitwe. The President said that he will clamp down on lecturers who want to take advantage of the election period to champion their political cause. Mr Lungu said that he will not allow institutions of higher learning to be politically abused.

The President also advised students not to be used by politicians to resort to violence through street protests. He said it is unacceptable for students to disturb the rights of innocent citizens whom they stone on the roads each time they want to advance their grievances. Mr. Lungu emphasized that discipline is essential for the students to succeed in their academic pursuits. He noted that students who compromise on discipline do not achieve much in life.

And COBUSU President Humphrey Mwenya said there is need for Government to upgrade some of the vocational trade institutions into colleges and universities. Mr. Mwenya also asked the President to review meal allowances, as the current economic status is unable to sustain students.

IN response Mr. Lungu promised to table the matter with Higher Education Minister Michael Kaingu and Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda.

PF has not repented of their sins despite Prayers and fasting GBM

UPND Vice President for Administration Geoffrey Mwamba has accused the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) of being on a mission to divide the country. In a statement released to the media in reaction to the PF rally held in Kitwe over the weekend, Mr Mwamba said that it was clear that the PF members have not repented of their sins despite hoodwinking Zambians to prayers and fasting on 18th October.

Below is the full statement

It is very clear that our colleagues in the PF are on a mission to divide the country.

It is also very clear that they have not repented of their sins despite hoodwinking Zambians to prayers and fasting on 18th October. This is the President Edgar Lungu who was insulting on Saturday then went to hide in church the following day, which is mockery to God.

To all the Zambians that watched and listened to the PF rally in Kitwe addressed by Edgar Lungu himself and a number of their leaders it was clear the entire rally was full of hate speech, attacking citizens especially the UPND. And the live ZNBC TV broadcast is another case of abuse of public media because the PF did not pay for it.

What a missed opportunity when our people on the Copperbelt expected messages of economic hope especially in the light of massive job losses in the mining and other sectors.

At the rate our colleagues in the PF are going with their campaigns in the country, it is clear that they are politically irrelevant and are just mere jokers without any message for the masses.

As UPND, we shall continue with our issue based political campaigns of offering solutions and hope for the majority suffering Zambians unlike our colleagues who are busy blaming everything on other countries instead of effecting sound economic policies and take the blame.

We are happy that many Zambians watched for themselves the joke and comedy of the entire PF leadership that is ruling the country based on hate messages of dividing the country.

Zambians now want sound economic messages of ending powercuts, reducing mealie meal prices, reducing the cost cooking oil, teachers and health workers recruitment programme, solving problems affecting institutions of higher learning, reducing the cost of fertiliser for our farmers and many issues such as economic diversification and creating jobs as well as dealing with souring inflation.

This has been our message as UPND rather than dwelling on personalities and hate language which was even bad for our youths who attended their rally.

Kabimba and Fred M’membe found with a case to answer

Rainbow Party President Wynter Kabimba and Post Newspapers Editor-in-Chief Fred M’membe have been found with a case to answer on two counts of Contempt of Court and Publishing Defamatory matter.

This relates to a newspaper article titled “Lungu’s Govt is Framing Nchito to Cover Rupiah’s Criminality – Kabimba,” published in the Post Newspapers in February this year, for which former President Rupiah Banda dragged Mr. Kabimba, the Post Newspapers and its Editor In Chief Fred M’membe to court.

When the matter came up this morning for ruling, Lusaka Magistrate Kenneth Mulife placed Mr. Kabimba, the Post Newspapers and Mr. M’membe on their defence after being convinced that the prosecution had established a Prima Facie case against the trio.

Magistrate Mulife further proceeded to set December 14th and 15th as possible dates on which Mr. Kabimba, the Post Newspapers, and Mr. M’membe will commence their defence.
And speaking shortly after the ruling, Mr. Kabimba described the decision of the Court as part of his party’s struggles to ascend to power.
Mr. Kabimba, who spoke confidently, encouraged a crowd of cheering supporters and party members outside the Lusaka Magistrate Court not to lose faith promising that the Rainbow Party will transform Zambia once it forms government.

He states that his party remains committed to the agenda of the Zambian people.

Mr. Kabimba has however, reminded his party members that this agenda can only be executed through them and through the good leadership of the party.

He has since called upon his party members to go out across the country and mobilize the party if they want to see the Rainbow Party bring about change in Zambia.

Zambia feels the heat of the 2015 El Nino as increased load shedding announced

Dark clouds are gathering on the horizon as forecasters predict 2015 could become the hottest year on record. The strongest ever El Niño heat waves were predicted to hit parts of Southern Africa towards the end of 2015 and lasting through to 2016.The 19th Southern African Regional Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-19), which met in late August in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo predicted that the region is expected to receive insufficient rainfall during the forthcoming agricultural season that runs from October 2015 to March 2016.This climate outlook for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is not a favourable one as the region is already facing numerous challenges.

This comes at a time when the Kariba Dam between Zambia and Zimbabwe is experiencing declining water levels, as water coming out through the turbines is more than inflows into the dam.

Water levels in Lake Kariba have dropped to 41 percent compared with 80 percent this time last year. With expected low rainfall, it is likely to take longer for water levels to be at optimal. As a result, the Zambezi River Authority, which manages the dam on behalf of Zambia and Zimbabwe, has reduced water allocation for power generation at the dam by Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) and Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA).

Zambia’s new Energy and Water Development Minister Dora Siliya in her facebook page announced that due to low water levels in the Zambezi and Kafue rivers load shedding hours have been increased from 8hours to up to 12 hours. She said the immediate solution was importation of power and that God will hear our prayers and it will rain very soon.

Dear friends,

I was informed by ZESCO last night that the water levels in the Zambezi and Kafue rivers are so low that load management is being affected. In many instances the load shedding has increased from 8 to 10 or 12 hrs. I have ordered ZESCO to be more proactive in releasing information especially relating to the load management schedule. We need to have predictable power supply so we know when we will have power, for how long and when we will not have power.
Clearly the immediate solution is importation of power as we are doing already but also that God will hear our prayers and it will rain soon. …very soon.

The strong El Niño of 2015 has contributed to suppressed rainfall over northern East Africa and Central America and the Caribbean , significantly limiting agricultural and pastoral potential, and straining local livelihoods. With El Niño forecast to continue into the first quarter of 2016, suppressed rainfall is likely over many regions during the coming rainy seasons, including in Southern Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean.

As El Niño continues through the first quarter of 2016, the Horn of Africa, Southern Africa, and Central Asia, as well as several other regions, are likely to experience abnormal rainfall patterns. El Niño is associated with reduced October to April rainfall in Southern Africa, a region where maize supply is already well below the five-year average and acute food insecurity is already more severe than usual,

SADC Climate Service Centre Regional Coordinator Bradwell Garanganga said much of SADC is likely to receive normal to below-normal rainfall for the periods October to December 2015 and January to March 2016, adding that “a persistent strong El Niño is also favoured during the bulk of the rainfall season.”

The El Niño effect has been associated with previous drought periods in southern Africa. The phenomenon causes the sea temperature to rise significantly in the Pacific Ocean off South America, and the air becomes dry, affecting the rain-formation process. He noted that only the extreme northern part of SADC and parts of island countries of Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles are expected to receive normal to above-normal rains in the first and second part of the summer season.

“The bulk of the southern tier states of continental SADC is likely to receive normal to below-normal rainfall for the period October to December 2015 and January to March 2016,” Garanganga said in his climate outlook presentation.

He however, said since climate conditions constantly change, users should contact their national meteorological offices for latest interpretation of the outlook, finer details, updates and additional guidance.

With the impending extreme weather conditions, the SADC region should prepare for such natural phenomena. For example, farmers could plant crops that do not take long to mature, and the region should invest more infrastructure development including roads, irrigation and silos.

Improving the transport network and storage facilities will allow agricultural produce to be moved smoothly from one place with surplus to another needing additional food.

“We should invest more in irrigation, conserve dam water, and plant short season varieties,” SARCOF Principal Meteorologist Linear Gopo said.

Most economies in SADC are largely dependent on climate conditions, and any reduction or increase in rainfall often has a negative effect on socio-economic development. For example, Zimbabwe’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) dropped by three percent and eight percent after the 1983 and 1992 droughts respectively.

In South Africa, the 1992 drought induced a reduction of the agricultural GDP by about ZAR 1.2 billion and caused a 0.4 to 1.0 percent loss in economic growth. The same drought cost the Zambian government US$ 300 million and translated into a 39 percent drop in agricultural output and a 2.8 percent decline in the country’s GDP.

Artist of the week : Gospel singer Chileshe Bwalya

Gospel singer Chileshe Bwalya is our Artist of the Week

chileshe_bwalya

How she started singing:
“I can remember as far back as when I was 3 years old in kindergarten and through primary and secondary school. However I started ministry when I joined Miracles By Fire in October 2012. It’s one thing to sing because you can and another to sing because you understand why God gave you the ability to do so. I had the ability but I just no purpose, Prophet Mwale and Prophetess Mwale have played a great deal in helping me grow. I did sing for friends and tv commercials and radio adverts but now it’s for Jesus.”

“God has given me so many plans. We embarked on a mission to create a Holy Ghost Network of worshipers and believers to spread the word. My responsibility at the moment is to equip and prepare with other believers for Gods work. Right now we are focusing on spreading the gospel. We plan on advancing the gospel into every area of media movies, tv series and music.”

Chileshe Bwalya’s  debut album ,Talitha Cumi , was well received by fans of gospel music  and shot to number 1 on the Sounds Top 20 local music chart.
The title of her album, Talitha Cumi, is an Aramaic phrase which means “Little Girl Arise.” The album ,which was produced by Ikonik studios and Ben Blazer contains 12 songs.
Chileshe shared in a Weekend Mail interview that Talitha Cumi refers to resurrection or the birth of the album as a testimony of how God has raised her from death to life.
“Even the concept of the album is like a resurrection and I am basically referring to situations that point to this,” she said.
The album features songs about marriage, broken homes, lost dreams and songs of worship, all of which reflect the album’s theme of resurrection.
Chileshe began recording the album in the first quarter of the year and wrote some of the songs on the album with some help from other artists such as Ephraim, who also features on the album.
Chileshe has so far had the privilege to perform alongside more established gospel acts such as Ephraim, Damiano and others.
She cites prophet Humphey Mwale as her musical inspiration adding: “He is the one who taught me a lot in terms of music.”
While pursuing a solo music career, the calm toned singer is also a member of the Miracles by Fire Praise team, whose debut album, The Anointing, occupied the number 1 position on the Sounds Top 20 chart earlier this year.

Her Vision:
“Mathew 10:7-8. I was fished out of darkness through people who submitted to Gods word. There are many out there who are the way I used to be. I just want them to know the God that I have come to know. People need to be healed through the word of God that is in the music. Its every Christians responsibility to spread the gospel.”

Charity work:
“I am fortunate enough to belong to a ministry that believes in true religion according to the word of God (James 1:27) there are a couple of projects that the church (MBF) has embarked on to help school going children “AMAKASA PROJECT”
It’s aim is to provide shoes for school going children as many do need assistance in this area, and Miracle Hands also to help widows sustain a living and support and partners with 4 orphanages, one for children living with HIV/AIDS, another for disabled and mentally challenged children aged 13yrs and below and another drop in centre to help children attain quality education .”

Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge has disclosed that he was approached by UPND Monze Central MP Jack Mwimbu on behalf of the party with intentions of setting up a mortuary in Nkana West.

Mr Musenge said he instructed the Kitwe City Council to reject the proposal on suspicion of Satanism.

He said it appeared sinister that Mr Mwimbu along with his business partners within the UPND could come to Kitwe and set up a mortuary leaving Southern Province.

Mr Musenge said the Councillors from the Kitwe City Council and the residents in Nkana West have both rejected the mortuary project.

He has since urged Zambians especially the youths to be careful with some opposition parties as they could be practicing Satanism.

Mr Musenge was speaking on Saturday during a PF Youth rally at Freedom Park in Kitwe.

“You need to be very careful with some political parties, recently an MP by the name of Mwimbu came to see me saying he has friends interested in setting up a mortuary. How can a political party through Mr Mwimbu be interested in setting up a mortuary on the Copperbelt?”

He added, “Do they want to bring Satanism here in Kitwe, do they want to bring confusion here? This is why we turned down that project. Let Mwimbu and his friends take that project to Southern Province where he hails from.”

Germany to provide concessional and promotional loans for Zambia electricity sector

Ambassador Bwalya Chiti
Ambassador Bwalya Chiti

Zambia’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, Ambassador Bwalya Chiti has said that Germany is in a position to offer concessional and promotional loans for Zambia’s electricity sector.

Ambassador Chiti made this disclosure while celebrating Zambia’s 51 years independence anniversary with his compatriots and other members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps in Berlin, Germany.

He noted that this is the first time that the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the KfW Development Bank was offering Zambia such loans.

“This opens up significant potential for cooperation and could assist Zambia with significant financing to realise the country’s investment objectives in the electricity sector,” he said.
Ambassador Chiti added that the German government is also rendering support in the introduction and implementation of renewable energy solutions for the country.

“It is a good thing to now see the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, the KfW Bank and other German institutions all partnering with Zambia to ensure that renewables are the future of the country,” he said.

He also further informed the audience that Zambia is to benefit through the German Federal government’s initiative of “One World – No Hunger”.

The initiative is aimed at addressing food security in an effort to eradicate hunger and malnutrition in the country.

“The project will be implemented through bilateral and multilateral development cooperation and through partnership with private sector and civil society organisations,” he said.

Ambassador Chiti observed that Zambia like any other country has not been spared from the economic slow down and the adverse economic environment.

“With the economic slowdown coupled with the free fall in global copper prices, the country is faced with huge challenges in its socio-economic development drive, and several sectors which include but not limited to energy, agriculture and mining are witnessing severe setbacks, Ambassador Chiti explained.

In swift response to those challenges, Ambassador Chiti disclosed that the Zambian government has put measures in place to remedy the situation.

Such measures are clearly spelt in the 2016 National Budget and will address the following: Increase in domestic revenue mobilisation, limit domestic borrowing and reduce budget deficit amongst others.

Ambassador Chiti further called on bilateral partners including the private sector, to work closely with his government for the establishment of more new industries in Agriculture, manufacturing of finished products and food processing for export and tourism.

“We are eager to work closely with our cooperating partners including the private sector in fostering a diversified economy in order to speed up the development agenda,” said Ambassador Chiti.

I’ll never endorse any retrenchment of workers in the mining industry-President Lungu

President Edgar Lungu says he does not endorse any job cuts in the mining sector. President Lungu stated that he has and will never endorse any retrenchment of workers in the mining industry saying doing so would be a betrayal of the Zambian people.

Head of State said this through his Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations, Amos Chanda shortly after a closed door meeting with leaders of mine unions in Kitwe yesterday.

President Lungu who met leaders from the United Mine Workers Union, Zambia Union of Nurses, Mine Workers Union of Zambia, and the National Union of Miners and Allied Workers said he will continue to engage all stakeholders in the outstanding labour insecurity facing the mining sector.

He disclosed that he will meet managements of Mopani Copper Mines and Luanshya Copper Mines regarding the laying off of workers and the on-going standoff by workers on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

The Republican President added that mine unions will also be present at the meetings.

And the Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) described the meeting between the unions and President Lungu as fruitful.

MUZ President, Nkole Chishimba said the position of the Union is that job redundancies are to be prevented in every way possible.

Mr. Chishimba explained that job losses in the mining sector are an industrial issue, rather than a political one.

He said his union is committed to protecting the jobs of its members.
