Edgar Lungu General listens to PF Director of Media and Publicity Brian Hapunda (c) after a closed door meeting with the Litunga at the Royal Palace in Limulunga District during the tour of duty of Western Province

President Edgar Lungu has told dismissed Patriotic Front (PF) media director Brian Hapunda that he is still a member of the PF despite differing with the party. The president told Hapunda at City airport in Lusaka today that he is still a member of the PF even though he had differed with secretary general Davies Chama.

“Mr Hapunda what is happening with your boss? But you are still a member of the party, it doesn’t mean when you differ then you cease to be a member of the party,” he said.
The president spoke to Hapunda when he was greeting people that had lined up to greet him.PF cadres later pounced on Hapunda who was whisked away by Lusaka province minister Obvious Mwaliteta.
The cadres demanded that Hapunda leave the airport a move he objected and subsequently annoyed the PF security.Mr Mwaliteta appealed to the PF security to stop embarrassing the party by engaging in the infighting.

PF secretary general Davies Chama yesterday dismissed Hapunda ordred him to surrender all party records and property in his possession.
“I wish to thank you sincerely for the services you rendered to the party as an employee and wishing you well in your future endeavours,” read the letter dated 1 June 2015.

The development came barely 24 hours after the Post newspaper published a leaked letter to President Edgar Lungu where Hapunda was explaining where he took campaign funds he got from Lusaka businessman Rajan Mahtan.

Hapunda told the president that he handed all the money he received from Mahtani to him and the first lady Esther Lungu and that he never pocketed any funds as alleged by some party members.

He further complained that State House aides were refusing him entry into the premises to seek audience with the president so as to explain what he was doing and what needed to be done in the party.

Modern Stars, Radiant’s shine on:The Week 13 games of the FAZ division one North

Second goal celebration

Game day 13 started with Saturday’s game between Kansanshi Dynamos and Konkola Mine Police. The struggling police side recorded yet another loss. Dynamos took the day with a lone goal moving up to 22points on the league table. Chindwin Sentries and Roan United had a draw-less brawl to share the points at hand.

Lumwana Radiant’s were again on the back foot in their home game on Sunday afternoon. The visiting, council sponsored outfit, Kitwe United drew first blood when they opened the score in the first 15minutes. A poorly organized defense was caught napping early in the game. The home team went to the break trailing by a goal. The second half saw a glowing Radiant side eventually burst into flames. They were awarded a penalty that Lembani Lungu converted after United agreed to resume play from its protest to even the scores at 52minutes into the game. Four minutes later, In-form Mike Banda put himself on the score sheet with the second goal to give Radiant’s the lead. A defensive error abetted the Radiant victory when, from a set piece, the clearance skewed into their own net. Kalulushi Modern stars still hold the top spot with 26points after narrowly beat Mining Ranger by a goal to nil in Kitwe. Gomes and ZESCO Solwezi also had a win on the road after beating Copperbelt Buffaloes (0-2) and ZESCO Luapula (0-1) respectively. 12th Placed Chambishi held veterans, Mufulira Blackpool’s reins, beating them by two goals sending them down the table and cutting their point-difference to four.

“Wonder boys” Real Nakonde continued their terror of the league by beating Ndola United 1-0, it is now almost fact that no one travels to the border town and collects full points. It is proving the true abattoir of the Northern first Division. They are now sitting in 3rd place behind one this leagues favourites for promotion, Lumwana Radiant’s and Kululushi Modern Stars.
This Wednesday the Radiants will have a chance to top the table when they play their game in hand against ZESCO Luapula. Coming in as under dogs, the Luapula boys will hope to get a better result playing on the road after their home loss to the sister team from Solwezi yesterday.
The league is still up for the taking and with only a few games before the mid-way break, the coveted Barclays cup spot is still up for grabs. The team that tops the table by then automatically qualifies to play with the Super league teams.

pilato

Renown musician Chama Fumba alias Pilato has said that he is not a United Party for National Development (UPND) sympathizers nor a politician because politicians are the same.
In an interview today Pilato said the police have so far not spoken to him but that he has been threatened by cadres.

“The police have not spoken to me yet, I think they are being professional but cadres are on me,” he said.

[pullquote]Politicians are a problem. They want to use the poor people now but when they win elections they start dinning and defending their fellow rich people[/pullquote]

Pilato said people think he is UPND but he has denied belonging to any political party and charged that all politicians are the same.

“Politicians are a problem. They want to use the poor people now but when they win elections they start dinning and defending their fellow rich people,” he said.

The musician added that he feels there is nothing wrong with his song because he never insulted anyone as alleged by some members of the society.“I think there is nothing wrong with the song, though some people are not comfortable with the Jameson part but Jameson is not an insult,” he said.

And police in Lusaka have instituted investigations into the alleged defamation of the President by musician Chama Fumba, alias Pilato, and have recorded statements from four complainants.
Lusaka Province commissioner of police Charity Katanga said in an interview yesterday that police are investigating the matter and assured that they will get to its root.

“Currently, we have recorded three statements and I have just been informed that another member of the public is making a similar complaint at Chilenje Police Station,” Ms Katanga said.
She said the first statement was recorded from Patriotic Front (PF) provincial secretary Maximo Kakumba, 36, of Lusaka’s Garden township.

Ms Katanga said Mr Kakumba complained to the police about Pilato’s song and an article in the Post newspaper edition of May 30, 2015 under the headline: “Pilato’s song excites Lungu’s critics”.
“He complained that the article is demeaning to the head of state and also about Pilato’s song, which he produced before the police,” she said.Ms Katanga said Mr Kakumba told the police that the song by Pilato is allegedly targeted at President Lungu, which is disrespectful and has brought the name of the head of state into disrepute.

And ZAM secretary-general Gloria Kabongo said in a separate interview yesterday that artists should be mindful when making reference to the President.

“We should be mindful of what we sing about. Even when we express ourselves, we should do it within the confines of the law.“The presidency is the highest office of our land, hence the need to respect the office-holder,” she said.

Ms Kabongo advised artists to desist from singing about the President in a demeaning and insulting manner. She said Zambian artists are lucky because they go scot-free whenever they insult the President.Ms Kabongo said this does not happen in other countries.

And Evangelical Youth Alliance International (EYAI) president Moses Lungu has called on President Lungu to take legal action against Pilato. He said relevant authorities should ban Pilato’s song because it is a bad song that should not be given airplay.Reverend Lungu called on the police to take action against the musician because his behaviour is unacceptable.
And MMD national youth chairperson Bowman Lusambo said that the youth are disappointed with Pilato.“Though some people are saying that he is an artist and should be allowed to express himself, the song he has sung demeans the President,” he said.Mr Lusambo said it is unfortunate that Pilato keeps mentioning President Lungu and the MMD in a disrespectful manner in his song.

Mpulungu farmers bemoan poor harvest

1

Most farmers under the Food Security Pack (FSP) in Mpulungu have complained of poor yields this year. The farmers made the complaint when Provincial Community Development Officer Chanda Mulenga visited the farmers in Isoko area in Mpulungu over the weekend.

The farmers said the early stoppage of the rains during the 2014/2015 farming season had adversely affected their yields. They said the abrupt rain stoppage may also affect the recoveries for some cash crops such as beans and maize for most beneficiaries.

The farmers however, thanked government for supporting vulnerable people with inputs which had so far greatly improved their livelihoods.

And Community Development Officer Chanda Mulenga urged the farmers to take the government programme seriously.Mr. Chanda disclosed that over 50 farmers benefited from the free inputs supplied by government in Mpulungu district.

He further disclosed that government had also given seven goats to seven vulnerable but viable farmers in the district.Mr. Chanda said 100 x 50kg top dressing and 100 x 50 kg basal dressing fertilizer were distributed to vulnerable but viable farmers in the area.

Human Rights Commission condemns killing of albino in Lundazi

7

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) is gravely saddened with the killing of a 37-year-old woman living with albinism in Lundazi District.

Last week, Charity Zulu of Kalumbu Village of Chief Magodi in was killed by four unknown men who also left her 42 year-old husband Robinson Nyirongo unconscious. The woman had both hands cut off and several teeth extracted while her husband was left unconscious.

HRC Director Florence Kabwesha said in a statement yesterday that it was disturbing to hear the report of Ms Zimba’s life being terminated in horrifying circumstances where her killers cut off her limbs and other body parts while she was still alive.

Ms Kabwesha said this was seriously violates the norm of respect for the right to life, the integrity and security of a person. She said there was need for quick action by the Police to ensure that the culprits were punished in accordance with the law.Ms Kabwesha said it was extremely unfortunate saying such grisly acts should be condemned by all Zambians.

She said the Commission was aware that people with albinism have been targeted and many killed in neighbouring countries and other parts of the world for their body parts which are sold for rituals. She said this calls for immediate measures to be taken by Government to prevent, punish and stop the cruelty against people with albinism.

“They have the inherent right to life like all other human beings and to be protected against violence and all forms of cruelty. All human life is infinitely precious that it must be protected at all times and no one should be arbitrarily deprived of it,”she said.

She said while the Zambia Police has made efforts to combat murder, much more must be done to put an end to the heinous crimes and to protect the vulnerable segment of the population.
She said the police and the community must work together to ensure the country does not see an upsurge of the macabre killings.

“It is important that Zambia remains a country where all the citizens feel respected and safe enough to freely enjoy their rights,”she said.

Ms Kabwesha appealed to Zambians not to condone violence and discrimination against people with albinism. She said this should not be part of the Zambian society which is founded on respect for the rights of all people.

“Let us raise awareness of the indignities and violence faced by people with albinism. This is a call to all nations by the United Nations Human Rights Council which recently adopted a resolution marking June 13, 2015 as the inaugural International Albinism Awareness Day,”she said.

I will not apologise says Pilato as Police probe the musician

pilato

CONTROVERSY has erupted over Copperbelt based musician Pilato’s latest politically charged hit single ‘A Lungu Anabwera’. Critics of the musician have accused him of defaming Republican President Edgar Lungu in his song saying he is bringing the highest office in the land to ridicule.

But Pilato says he can not defame the Head of State with his song and was merely bringing out his message.

And the musician has revealed he has started receiving threats over his life since the track rattled its way on social media with massive shares.

The musician however says the intimidation coming from the Patriotic Front membership and senior government officials will not deter him from speaking about the ills in the country.

Pilato, who has shot to national attention over his polarizing lyrical content laced with running political commentary says the Patriotic Front leadership taught Zambian’s the MMD was evil and wondered why the PF was now in bed with them.

“Those that claim to be friends and believers in the ideals of the PF should be the first to apologise because, its the PF that taught us the evils we knew and know about the MMD. It is the PF that told us that the MMD were corrupt, it is the PF that told us that the MMD were responsible for sufferings of the so many Zambians today. It is the PF that told us that for us to move forward we needed to vote the government out.” Pilato said

Edgar Lungu is in a cage like a parrot says Dr Manda

UROLOGIST Dr Francis Manda has observed that President Edgar Lungu is in a cage like a parrot where only a few people are privileged to see him.

The controversial medical doctor said on his ZNBC’s Radio Four Manzi Therapy programme that it is very difficult to meet the president, a situation that will make him lose touch with the happenings on the ground and make him unpopular.

“When President Edgar Lungu was swearing in his aides at State House, he told them very clearly that they should not shield him from the people but rather allow everyone to have access to the presidency and have an audience with him, he said please don’t block people from seeing me but allow people to come and have audience with me,” he said.

He added that now it is becoming difficult to meet the head of State because his aides are shielding him.

“The President is being shielded by his aides at State House. They cannot allow people to see him. The President is like a parrot in a cage and only a few people can see him,” he said.

Last year Dr Manda on the same platform said it was almost impossible to meet President Michael Sata at State House because of procedures. He however said the difficult procedures were as a result of the busy schedule that the late president had.

On President Lungu, Dr Manda did not disclose why he observed that the President was being shielded by his aides who he accused of blocking people to see the head of state.

“I want to appeal to the young men at State House to allow people see the president and have an audience with him,” he said.

Tribalism is a product of politicians and not traditional leaders-Chief Macha

11

PRESIDENT Lungu has urged traditional rulers to help politicians abandon behaviour that promotes tribalism because no person chooses what tribe to be.

Mr Lungu said he detests the scourge and will do his very best as President to curb the scourge.

“I agree with your Royal Highnesses that tribalism is a menace that comes from politicians and especially when canvassing for votes. For me, I look at quality and not tribe,” President Lungu said.

The head of state was responding to Chief Macha who made a strong presentation that tribalism was a product of politicians and not traditional leaders.

Chief Macha pointed out that traditional leaders enjoy cordial relations with their subjects within and outside their chiefdoms.

In a statement issued by special assistant to the President for press and public relations Amos Chanda, Mr Lungu asked the traditional leaders to offer him their best sons and daughters to work with in moving Zambia forward.

The head of state stressed that he will continue to accord his natural respect which is non-negotiable to all traditional leaders and, therefore, there should be nothing political about his actions.

And Chief Siachitema of Kalomo told President Lungu that he is welcome to Southern Province any time.

He said the people of Southern Province love President Lungu and want him to visit the area.
And Chief Macha invited Mr Lungu to Choma on October 15 this year to celebrate the provincial capital’s status as an open defecation-free area, which will also be global hand-washing day.

President Lungu promised to travel to the region on the said day and that he will always create time for the people.

Opposition UPND confident of scooping All the three seats on June 30th

UPND Deputy Spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo
UPND Deputy Spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo

The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) says it is ready for June 30 th , 2015 parliamentary by-election.

UPND Deputy Spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo is confident that the three candidates would scoop the seats in this month’s poll.

In an interview yesterday, Mr Lifwekelo said that his party was certain of winning the three vacant seats this month end.

“We’re confident that our candidates will scoop all the three parliamentary by elections set for this month,” he said.

The opposition party Deputy Spokesperson has however assured that his party would adhere to the electoral code of conduct during the campaign period and beyond.

But PF Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri said the ruling party would grab the seats from the opposition UPND and the former ruling party, MMD.

Ms. Phiri said this is because of the confidence the people have in the PF leadership style and good policies of government under President Edgar Lungu.

She said the ruling party is confident of scooping all the three parliamentary seats in Mulobezi, Petauke Central and Malambo constituencies largely because the PF Candidates are popular to guarantee victory.

The PF has fielded Dora Siliya for Petauke Central, Patricia Mulasikwanda for Mulobezi and businessman Jack Shuma for Malambo seat.

However , opposition MMD has disclosed that it will not participate in the forthcoming parliamentary by elections for Mulobezi, Petauke Central and Malambo constituencies.

MMD Spokesman Raphael Nakachinda revealed that the decision not to field candidates in the three by elections was arrived at after wider consultations with its leadership.

Mr. Nakachinda said the move was aimed at allowing the former party to concentrate on its ongoing healing process and is currently not in a good state to contest any elections.

In April 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that former Petauke Central MP, Dora Siliya ,former MMD Malambo MP, Maxwell Mwale and former Mulobezi Mp, Hastings Sililo should be allowed to re-contest their parliamentary seats.

The three seats were nullified by the courts for alleged corrupt practices in the 2011 general elections.

Cargill completes acquisition of Zamanita from Zambeef

2

Cargill has completed the acquisition of Zamanita Ltd, the soya bean crushing and oil refining subsidiary of Zambeef.

Zamanita now becomes an integral part of Cargill’s business in Zambia.

As part of the deal, Cargill has acquired all of Zamanita’s assets, including the Mama’s oil and Zamanita oil brands.

Welcoming Zamanita’s 310 employees to Cargill, Lezanne van Zyl, General Manager of Cargill in Zambia said, ‘Cargill will immediately start an extensive investment programme at the crush and refinery site in Lusaka, where upgrades will be made to machinery, tools and operational processes.’

‘Building on Zamanita’s existing strengths, we intend to bring this plant up to the high standards of quality, environmental health and safety that is associated with our company around the world. We will optimize the efficiency of the operation that will bring benefits to our customers in the food and feed sectors.”

“Acquiring this business is a strong indicator of Cargill’s intention to grow our business in Zambia,” added Johan Steyn, head of Cargill’s grain and oilseeds business in the Middle East and Africa.

“We see excellent potential in the country’s agricultural sector and this investment is aligned with Cargill’s strategy to develop our offering to farmers. Mopani injects US$1.2 billion into mines

Mopani Smelter in Mufulira
Mopani Smelter in Mufulira

MOPANI Copper Mines (MCM) has spent US$1.2 billion on the sinking of three new shafts to extend the lifespan of its mines in Kitwe and Mufulira by over 25 years.

MCM corporate affairs manager Cephas Sinyangwe said in an interview in Kitwe on Saturday that the expansion programme will enable the mining company to increase copper output by 50 percent.

Mr Sinyangwe named the shafts as Synclinorium and Mindolo in Kitwe and the Mufulira operations.

He said the Synclinorium shaft at Nkana mine is expected to be commissioned by the end of the year while Mindolo and Mufulira shafts will be completed in 2017.

“The expansion programme, costing in excess of US$1 billion, includes sinking, equipping and constructing the new Synclinorium, Mindola and Mufulira. These capital projects will extend Mopani’s mining life by a further 20-30 years and ensure the current workforce is maintained and possibly increased,” Mr Sinyangwe said.

He said the development is expected to increase copper ore hosting capacity from the current six million metric tonnes to 11 million metric tonnes per annum from 2017 onwards.

“The shafts will sustain economic benefits to local businesses that are dependent on mining. A perfect example is Nkana Mine. Without sinking the Synclinorium shaft, production would have slumped from the current three million tonnes per year to approximately 1.6 million tonnes per year by 2016/2017.

“It is expected that once commissioned later this year, production at Nkana mine will eventually rise to around five million tonnes of copper ore per annum,” Mr Sinyangwe said.

PF, MMD, UPND, ADD and FDD push for gender agenda

1

FIVE political parties have resolved to prioritise the reviewing of their constitutions, manifestos and other internal rules and regulations to make themselves gender-responsive as they prepare for the 2016 general elections.

The parties are the Alliance for Development and Democracy (ADD), Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), Patriotic Front (PF) and the United Party for National Development (UPND).

The parties, in a joint communiqué issued at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday,
expressed concern at continued gender-inequalities in their parties and failure to fulfil the requirements of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) protocol on gender and development.

The SADC protocol commits governments to ensure that by 2015, 50 percent of decision-making positions in the public and private sectors are held by women. This also requires engendering of political party constitutions, manifestos and internal regulations and rules.

Reading the communiqué to the Minister of Gender and Child Development Nkandu Luo on behalf of other political parties, PF member Joyce Mlewa said they have also resolved to develop gender policies aimed at addressing inequalities in party structures.

Mrs Mlewa said the parties will further press for attainment of the 50/50 gender balance, and thereby change the political structure.

“We have resolved to ensure that adoption and selection processes in political parties are gender-sensitive to ensure equal participation of women and men in elective positions,” she said.

And Prof Luo is happy that political parties have opted to work together in championing the gender agenda in their different political structures.

She said: “If things could always be like this, where we all come together for a common cause, we would really move faster in terms of development. Two striking things are that we have decided to work together as different political parties and the commitment from members of the press to report on issues that matter most in our development agenda.”
