FILE: National Revolution Party president Cosmo Mumba mourns Sata
National Revolutionary Party president, Cosmo Mumba, has withdrawn from the Presidential race for the January 20, 2015 elections.
Mr Mumba, who was accompanied by his wife and a handful of supporters, told journalists at the Supreme Court that he had withdrawn from contesting next year’s Presidential elections because he was still mourning late President, Michael Sata, who was his mentor.
Mr Mumba said since he was not ready to stand in the 2015 elections he will rally behind the PF Presidential candidate, Edgar Lungu, and join the team in campaigning for him.
He disputed past reports that he withdraws from Presidential races because he fails to raise the required nomination fee.
Mr Mumba boasted that he was rich and cannot fail to pay the K10 000 which was required for him to file his nomination papers.
He told journalists while holding some batches of money in his hands that he had the money for his nominations and has since donated a K15 000 to the PF secretariat to support the party in the campaigns.
And Mr Mumba has thanked Acting President, Guy Scott, for having reconciled with the PF Presidential candidate, Edgar Lungu.
FORUM for Democracy and Development (FFD) PresidentEdith Nawakwi addressing a rally at the Changanamai grounds in Kitwe
The opposition Forum for Democracy and Development has appealed to Barrick Gold to exercise patience before pulling out of the country.
In a statement released to the media FDD President Edith Nawakwi called on the mining firm to wait for the out of the elections which she said will see the PF live office hence pave way for a new government which can negotiate for a win-win situation for both the mining company and the people.
Ms. Nawakwi accused the ruling Patriotic Front government of not caring about the well being of the workers who will be left jobless once the company pulls out.
The opposition leader also noted that if the PF government had embraced the spirit of dialogue the situation wouldn’t have arisen.
She also said that her party once voted into office will have an open door policy to investors and other stakeholders to ensure that such situations are sorted out with any complications.
Below is a full statement released by the opposition party.
The news that Barrick Gold intends to suspend its operations at Lumwana mine in Solwezi at a time we thought we are making some positive gains by attracting some big mining operators such as Barrick Gold is very sad.?
?We are aware that Barrick Gold has made several attempts to engage in dialogue with government over the new taxes but they have been snubbed because this government does not value dialogue and does not care about the plight of the people who will be jobless when the mine shuts down.?
?The attitude of the ruling Patriotic Front leaders in managing not the only mining sector but the entire country’s economy lives much to be desired because there is no way that at this juncture that the government can fail to negotiate an arrangement were both the people and the mining sector can benefit.?
?Governments intention when it transferred the mining sector to the private sector was meant to make the sector viable but not for government completely layoff its hands.?
?We as FDD want to tell this government that for the next 28 days if there is anything they can do for the people of Zambia is to persuade investors to wait for the new government which we will be formed by FDD so that we can reopen dialogue between the business community and the government.?
?As FDD we urge Barrick Gold not shut down the mine but wait until the out come of the elections and we want to assure them that when form government next January ours will be a government with an open door policy to the business community and other stakeholders in the running of the country’s affairs.?
?Once we form government we want to forge a partnership of trust and mutual respect between government and investors not only those in the mining sector but the entire business community.?
?We as the FDD are appalled with the PF’s conduct regarding the treatment of investors since the got into office in 2011 and we wish to appeal to the business community to have a little patience as the current government has less 30 days before it is booted out by the people in the next elections. ?
?I call on all well meaning Zambians to work hard in ensuring that we escort the PF out of government and stop the confusion which the have taken to the business community before the country’s economy is completely ruined.?

Cabinet Office Permanent Secretary for Special Duties Bert Mushala (l) confers with Road Development Agency (RDA) Western Province Regional Manager Gershom Mwagomba (r) when inspecting the construction progress of Mongu-Kalabo Road Project during the tour in Western Province to compile major developmental projects,
THE construction of the $286.9 million Mongu-Kalabo road whose works were scheduled to be completed in April 2016 has had its completion date brought forward to December 31 next year.
RDA chief executive officer Bernard Chiwala said here yesterday when he paid a courtesy call on Western Province permanent secretary Augustine Seyuba that the works which started in 2011 will finish four months ahead of schedule .
Mr Chiwala commended Avic Constructions International the contractor working on the road for working ahead of schedule.
“The Mongu-Kalabo road which is our second largest project is an engineering marvel and it has stretched our minds in order to find a technically sound solution so that it can stand the test of time,”Mr Chiwala said.
He said the road which has 26 bridges has had 69 percent of the works done.
“78 percent works on the bridges ?have been done while 60 percent of the road works have been done, “ he said.
Mr Chiwala said it has not been easy working on the road due to non-availability of materials as most of them have to be imported from either Lusaka or South Africa.
“we are also grateful to Government for always making resources available,” Mr Chiwala said.
And Mr Seyuba said his office is committed to ensuring that development in the province continues despite the political mood surrounding the country.
He said the province has never seen such major development in a long time.
Mr Seyuba said the Mongu-Kalabo road will open up trade links between Mongu and Angola.
“We are very happy with the road works in the province and they are so perfect,” Mr Seyuba said.
He also commented the contractor for the good job on the 34-kilometre stretch.
Mr Chiwala and his entourage later toured the Mongu-Kalabo road.

THIRTY-SEVEN MMD members of Parliament (MPs) have reaffirmed they will still rally behind UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema despite Nevers Mumba being reinstated as MMD presidential candidate.
“As MPs, we will not go backwards on our decision to support HH because that is what we had agreed to do. We are principled people. Dr Mumba was supposed to have consulted us after winning his court case but he didn’t,” MMD chairman Kabinga Pande said.
Speaking at a press briefing, Mr Pande said the national executive committee under the guidance of Dr Mumba had earlier resolved that the MMD will work with the UPND alliance to ensure that Zambians are liberated.
“We shall stay principled and fulfil our promise to work with the UPND and ensure Zambia is liberated and put back on the right path to prosperity. The alliance does not mean that the MPs are joining or defecting to the UPND,” Mr Pande said.
He stressed that MMD MPs are merely working with the UPND, adding structures of the party will not be affected.
Meanwhile, Zambezi East MMD Member of Parliament Sara Sayifwanda said it is unfortunate that Dr Mumba filed his nominations without support from his MPs.
Ikelenge MP Elijah Muchima, Kasenegwa MP Victoria Kalima and Rufunsa MP Kenneth Chipungu were among the members of parliament that attended the briefing.
A few weeks ago, some MMD MPs led by Lunte MMD MP Felix Mutati joined an alliance to support the UPND candidate Hakainde Hichilema for the January 20 presidential election, a decision the then party national secretary Muhabi Lungu described as gross indiscipline.
Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda delivering the 2015 budget
MINISTER of Finance Alexander Chikwanda is leading a Zambian delegation at the 61st TAZARA council of ministers meeting in Dar es Salaam.
And the Tanzania Parliamentary Committee on Infrastructure has asked its government to review the law establishing Tazara for it to operate commercially instead of sticking to the present Act which only benefits Zambia.
Mr Chikwanda is acompanied by Minister of Transport, Communication, Works and Supply Yamfwa Mukanga, Minister of Commerce and Trade Robert Sichinga, permanent secretary Charles Sipanje and other senior government officials.
The meeting, which is being held at Tazara head office, is also being attended by Tanzanian Minister of Transport Harrison Makyembe, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Abdallah Kigoda and other senior government officials.
Speaking after touring a number of projects in Dar es Salaam and Mbeya on Tuesday, the Tanzanian Parliamentarian Committee on Infrastructure called for more investment in Tazara.
The projects visited by the committee were: the gravel factory, rail-making plant at Kongolo Mswiswi in Mbarali and train engine repairing garage in Mbeya.
“The present law which states that the head of the rail should be Zambian and should also have the last say on the transport entity has been overtaken by events and therefore should be scrapped,” said Tunduru South lawmaker Mtutura Abdallah.
He said the formation of the railway agency was governed by the politics of the time which have been on the reign in operating it, adding that it ought to be reviewed to allow the first Uhuru railway on the continent operate commercially.
“Two things ought to be done at the same time. One is the review of the Act governing the rail operations so as to have it run commercially for the benefit of the shareholders. And two; the government to invest more into this agency for more productivity and the national economic growth,” Mr Mtutura said.
Mariam Msabaha (Zanzibar Urban West, Special Seats) said it is high time the government ensured that workers in the railway company were paid their salaries on time so they could work more efficiently and effectively.
For a number of years now, Tazara workers, particularly those on the Tanzanian side, have been going without salaries for many months.
She said this was so because Zambia had reviewed the establishing law.
Special Seats MP for Arusha Rebecca Mngodo said the Transport ministry ought to prepare a budget for the railway which should be passed by the parliament to make it more efficiency.
She said before investing more money in Tazara, the law must put it clearly how Tanzanians are going to benefit.
Committee chairperson Juma Kapuya said the committee will advise the government accordingly on what ought to be done to revamp Tazara.
“We have seen how the nation is poorly fairing in Tazara, besides we have seen many things including the good projects under the rail which are not running productively. We are going to document our observations to the government on its part in Tazara,” Professor Kapuya said.
And Dr Mwakyembe said he concurred with the lawmakers’ views that the rail company should now operate as a commercial entity.
He said circumstances which were governing during the establishment of the rail firm and the Tanzania-Zambia Pipeline were aimed at saving Zambia from depending on the exploitative Boer regime of South Africa. That is why the law had to favour Zambia more than Tanzania, he added.
“At present, such circumstances are non-existent, he said, therefore there is a need to change the law so as to benefit the shareholders equally, “he said.
The committee will also tour Itungi port on Lake Nyasa, Songwe international airport, and Momba district bordering Zambia.
SOME unscrupulous people in Kitwe’s Chimwemwe Township have vandalised over 250 water meters that were recently installed by Nkana Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC).
Early this year, NWSC embarked on a programme to install 7,000 water metres in Kitwe’s Chimwemwe and Bulangililo townships but the devices are being removed by unknown people.
NWSC community mobilisation specialist Mwangala Chiwala expressed sadness over the vandalism of the water meters which were installed at a huge cost.
Ms Chiwala said NWSC spent K3 million to install the water meters in Chimwemwe and Bulangililo townships and that the vandalism of the devices is a huge loss to the company.
“We are really saddened with what is happening in Kitwe’s Bulangililo and Chimwemwe townships where some unknown people are removing the water meters that we recently installed. Some people are even burning the meters, these devices were installed at a huge cost,” she said.
Ms Chiwala suspects it’s the residents who are vandalising the meters to avoid paying the water bills and warned that they risk facing the law should they continue destroying water infrastructure.
She urged the residents to safeguard the water infrastructure which is meant to improve the supply of water in their area.
Ms Chiwala also bemoaned the high rate at which water pipes and pump valves in Kitwe’s Wusakile and Chamboli townships are being vandalised which has resulted in the two townships experiencing erratic water supply.
She said the vandalism of water pipes in Wusakile and Chamboli townships is retrogressive on the part of the company which is supposed to spend its money on implementing new projects instead of replacing stolen pipes.
Ms Chiwala warned that anyone found vandalising water infrastructure risks facing a jail sentence of not less than one year.
“For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land — a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills.”
(Deuteronomy 8:7, NIV)
TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria
God has a place prepared for you just like He prepared a place for His people in scripture. Notice that in this place God has prepared, there is no shortage — no shortage of resources, no shortage of opportunities, no shortage of creativity, of friendships, of joy and peace. In the good land, you will lack no good thing.
Anytime you are tempted to get down or look at what you don’t have, turn it around. Say, “Lord, I want to thank You that You are bringing me into my garden, a land of blessing, a land where my gifts and talents will come out to the full, a good land where I will fulfill my destiny, a good land where I’ll live healthy, happy and whole, a good land where my whole house will honor You!”
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, help me to see with my eyes of faith the good land that You have prepared. Help me to walk in Your ways, to stay close to You, and honor You in all that I do in Jesus’ name. Amen! — Joel & Victoria Osteen
UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema has called for a fair deal between mining companies and the Government to protect the interest of Zambian workers.
Mr Hichilema who addressed a rally in Kitwe yesterday said that there was need to realise that Zambians were the country’s greatest asset.
He said that he was going to address the many challenges retired miners were facing on the Copperbelt.
“Government needs to make sure we are getting a fair deal when we sign any mining contract. If we are not sure we are getting enough in return, in terms of revenues, jobs and investment then we don’t make the deal – simple as that,” he said.
“We must remember that our people are our greatest asset, and ensure our youths and workers are provided with training opportunities that will enable them to go on and take up top jobs at these mines, for example in technical and management roles.”
He noted that Copperbelt Province was host to so much wealth, yet even some of those who worked in the mining sector were not benefitting properly and faced tough daily working and living conditions.
He said others could not find employment while health facilities and sanitation services had remained a poor standard for many.
With the Kitwe Council budget slashed by K4.1 million this month, the prospect for an improvement of the situation under the current government does not appear to be on the horizon.
“I know that many of you had high hopes the PF government would defend and protect the rights of employees and labourers on the Copperbelt.
“When you see how the government has treated even its own employees, such as nurses, in the past three years, it is perhaps unsurprising that things haven’t improved for the majority of workers,” he said.
He said the Government needed to provide Zambian businesses on the Copperbelt with more support so that they could benefit from the mining business by being suppliers and contractors.
Mr Hakainde was joined in Kitwe by one of his vice Canisius Banda Alliance for Development and president Charles Milupi, Lunte MMD Member of Parliament Felix Mutati, former first lady Maurean Mwanawasa and former finance minister Situmbeko Musokotwane
Monze District Commissioner, Big Mwiinde, has assured farmers who supplied Maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) in the district to be patient as they will be paid soon.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, Mr Mwiinde explained that small scale farmers owed money by the agency should not despair as efforts were being made to pay all the farmers who supplied their maize to the FRA in the district during the last marketing season.
“I have received good news that some farmers who supplied maize to FRA will start receiving their money presumably next week and all I can ask our small scale farmers who have not been paid yet to be patient as they will be paid soon,” said Mr Mwiinde.
“Of course we have received a lot of complaints from farmers in the district on the delayed payments for the maize they delivered to FRA but I can assure them that by next week they will start receiving their monies,” he added
The District Commissioner, however, reluctantly admitted that the late payments to farmers would affect proper preparations for crop production during the 2014/2015 farming season.
On the other hand Mr Mwiinde said government was up to the challenge of ensuring that all the farmers under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) received all the farming inputs they needed on time.
He explained that most of the small scale farmers under FISP had already received farming inputs, notably basal dressing fertiliser and maize seed, adding that the district would soon start distributing top dressing fertiliser to all small scale farmers in the district.
“I would say we have delivered all the farming inputs except for top dressing fertiliser which is being delivered to the district as I speak and hopefully next week all farmers will receive top dressing fertiliser,” Mr Mwiinde said.
Meanwhile, Mr Mwiinde said 1,400 x 50 kg bags of top dressing and basal fertiliser has been distributed to vulnerable people in the district under the Food Security Pack (FSP).
Mr Mwiinde said the programme under the tutelage of the Department of Community Development aims at supporting the aged, poor people, orphaned and other vulnerable people in society, adding that the programme has achieved positive results in reducing poverty in the district.
PF reconciliation presser at GRZ house in Lusaka today
The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has observed the need for ruling Patriotic Front (PF) President Edgar Lungu to take stock of the people that surround him if healing is to take place in the ruling party now that the reconciliation have been achieved.
Governance advisor Isaac Mwanza says his of organization is of the view that Mr. Lungu who is also Defence and Justice Minister needs to particularly take stock of members that are alleged to have been fueling differences in the ruling party.
Mr. Mwanza has told Qfm News in an interview that much as YALI is happy to see the ruling PF resolve its differences outside court, it holds the position that if Mr. Lungu understands what it means to stand by the continuity and vision of late President Michael Sata, he needs to understand that all those who Mr . Sata had disassociated with have come back to his side and that there can only be one reason for this.
He says YALI thinks that this could be purely out of benefits they will accrue once he is elected republican president the reason why they are now campaigning for him.
The YALI Governance advisor has since called upon Mr. Lungu to begin thinking with young people.
He says his organization we would like to see more youths included in the decision making and setting of national priorities if the ruling PF is to be given a new mandate to complete late President Sata’s term of office.
And Zambian Voice Executive Director Chilufya Tayali who has described the reconciliation that has taken place in ruling PF as long overdue has noted the need for the ruling party to desist from abusing public resources in its 2015 presidential election campaigns.
Mr. Tayali says his organization hopes that the ruling PF will stick to acting President Guy Scott’s position which recently indicated that he would not be manipulated into using public resources in party campaigns.
He has told QFM news in a separate interview that Zambian Voice is thus urging Dr. Scott to remain principled and maintain his position.
The Zambian Voice Executive Director states that his organization would like to see the ruling party campaign on an even ground with other political parties by using its own resources as opposed to abusing public resources.
The opposition Zambia Direct Democracy (ZDDM) has apologized to former president Rupiah Banda for having not read the mood of Zambians before calling for his political comeback.
The ZDDM has also admitted that it did not read the situation on the ground that the people Zambia have not yet learnt a bitter lesson that not everything shining is gold.
In the open letter of apology addressed to Mr. Banda and made available to Qfm News ZDDM President Edwin Sakala has stated that his party should have known that Zambia is not dealing with a flesh and blood problem but an alleged spiritual problem which can be best handled by the Church.
He says it may therefore not make sense to some people who do not believe in the existence of God but that for those who do it is very clear that Zambia is in the midst of spiritual battle.
The ZDDM president has alleged that this spiritual battle started when late former President Fredrick Chiluba took a very spiritually dangerous decision to declare Zambia a Christian nation.
He says in the spiritual Reims this declaration put Zambia on a war path with the forces of darkness which felt challenged.
The opposition notes for those with eyes to see this spiritual war is even visible as it manifests in among other thing the extremely dirty environment, daily reports of innocent blood being shed, increasing cases of defilement and increase in Gender based violence.
He has observed for the average Zambian depression, hunger, being broke, unemployment, reading a demonic propaganda newspaper and watching confusion have become a normal part of daily life that they will feel lost if they traveled to other countries where life is free of the Satanic manifestation.
FLASHBACK: Dr Dan Pule and his wife walk away with a meal at the Africa Freedom Day celebrations in Lusaka
Christian Democratic Party (CDP) president, Danny Pule, has successfully filed in his nomination papers at Supreme Court for the Presidential elections scheduled to take place on January 20, 2015.
Dr Pule arrived at Supreme Court grounds in the company of his wife, party officials and supporters.
The CDF President declared his assets worth K71m and successfully filed in his nomination papers before Acting Chief Justice, Lombe Chibesakunda, after raising the required 200 supporters and meeting other electoral conditions.
And speaking after filing in his nomination papers, Dr Pule said his party, once voted into power next year, will put God as first priority as part of the manifesto by ensuring that the Church is involved as partners in national development.
Dr Pule further promised that his party will reduce the high cost of living for all Zambians by ensuring a reduction in the price of mealie-meal and other essential commodities.
He charged that the campaigns have now started since he has successfully filed his papers and will go country-wide campaigning for the forthcoming Presidential elections.
Dr Pule has since urged his supporters to work together to ensure that they win next month’s President elections.
