THE Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has given Livingstone’s New Fairmount Hotel a five-day ultimatum to allow its workers to join unions of their choice failure to which the entity will face sanctions.

ZCTU Secretary General Roy Mwaba has given a five-day ultimatum to Fairmount Hotel to allow its workers join unions of their choice and be able to bargain for their conditions of service.

Mr Mwaba said it was unacceptable for a Hotel, which was hosting several national conferences for trade unions, to have a situation where its workers were not allowed to join any trade union.

He was speaking in Livingstone on Thursday in an interview on the sidelines of the just ended 13th Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) quadrennial conference held at New Fairmount Hotel.

“I want to confirm that ZCTU held a very high level meeting on Wednesday afternoon with the management of New Fairmount Hotel.

Because of the defiance that the hotel has had over the issue unionisation, we have given them a five day ultimatum to ensure that all workers at the hotel that are eligible for unionisation fill up forms and join a union of their choice,” he said.

Mr Mwaba said if the Hotel did not comply with the ultimatum, ZCTU would apply sanctions against the entity.

He said it was common knowledge that the hotel survived because of the workshops and conferences that the labour movement took to its premises.

“If management does not comply with the ultimatum, we are going to direct all trade unions in Zambia to shun using the hotel for any kind of business.

Technically, that will mean that New Fairmount Hotel will be a no go area for union functions and all those that have booked including ZCTU may cancel the booking and they will go to other hotels and lodges,” Mr Mwaba said.

He said ZCTU investigations revealed that there were other hospitality entities that were violating the workers’ rights by refusing them to belong to a labour movement.

“We have a number of lodges and hotels which we are also going to visit and we would like to give a timely warning to such entities behaving like New Fairmount Hotel to comply with the laws of the country,” he said.

Mr Mwaba said appealed to District Commissioners and labour officer for Southern Province to work with the labour movement so that the workers were unionised.

Preview: Egyptian press give Nkana low rating

5

The Egyptian press has described Saturday’s CAF Confederation Cup Group B game as an easy test for eight-time African champions Al Ahly when they host Nkana at Petrosport Stadium on Saturday in a 19h00 kickoff.

Nkana return to Cairo 40 days after their humiliating 5-0 loss to Al Ahly’s bitter rivals Zamalek in the CAF Champions League on March 30.

And as Nkana brace to face Al Ahly in a tie, some sections of the Egyptian press have described the fixture as ‘a relatively easy test at home’.

But visiting coach Masauso Mwale has said in almost philosophical fashion that the have not obligingly travelled to Cairo to get whipped.

“I think they have attained another level in their playing, they know what is at stake in the Confederation Cup,”Mwale said.

“They are going to play for the nation and also for Nkana.”

Meanwhile, the match will mark striker Evans Kangwa’s continental debut after he missed the January 15 registration deadline when he rejoined the record 12-time champion late that same month after settling a contractual dispute with the club.

Kangwa has show lethal signs for both club and country since March scoring a brace for Zambia in a come-from-behind 2-1 home win over Uganda on March 5 in Ndola after replacing Rodgers Kola midway through the first half.

He has gone to score two goals for Nkana in cup and league action and hit the post on numerous occasions on top of some important assist in the sides last two league wins.

History however is against Nkana after losing 2-0 in Cairo in their first and only other meeting against Al Ahly dating back to the 1983 Africa Cup Champions Cup semifinals when they were eliminated by the same aggregate scoreline.

Opposition leaders demand the re-introduction of windfall tax following Anil Agarwal video

Opposition political parties have demanded that government re-introduces windfall tax in view of revelations by Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal that Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) makes a minimum profit of $500 million profit per year.

A YouTube video taken in March 2014 Mr. Agarwal mockingly tells of how he bought Konkola Copper Mines for only US$25 million and how the mine has continuously been making a minimum of $500 million profit per year plus $1 billion.

United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema has told QFM News in an interview that if government had reintroduced windfall tax the money could have been channeled to infrastructure development in the country.

Mr. Hichilema says the PF government should not wait for the opposition and other relevant stakeholders to remind them of the need to re-introduce windfall tax in view of such revelations.

The UPND leader adds that if the PF government is a descent government, it would not to wait for the revelation by the Vedanta Chairman of huge profits KCM is making but would have introduced the windfall tax when it took over office in 2011 as they promised.

And National Movement for Progress (NMP) President, Ng’andu Magande, says when he reminded the PF government of the need to reintroduce the windfall tax he was called him a lunatic.

Mr. Magande who introduced windfall tax during the time he served as Finance Minister before it was scrapped off by his predecessor Situmbeko Musokotwane says the PF have now seen the result of failing to reintroduce the tax.

Mr. Magande says it is common knowledge that many developing countries such as Zambia are losing billions of dollars in the extractive industry owing to poor policies.

Speaking in a separate interview, Alliance for Better Zambia (ABZ) President Father Frank Bwalya says the information coming from the Vedanta boss should not surprise Zambians because it was expected when the PF government refused to re-introduce the windfall tax.

Father Bwalya says remarks by the Vedanta Chairman confirm what various stakeholders have always said about the privatization of some of the country’s assets.

And the Zambia Revenue Authority is checking to establish whether claims by Vendanta Chairman that Konkola Copper Mines makes a minimum of $500 million in profit per year is at variance with profits declared.

Reliable sources at ZRA have told QFM News that if need be, tax adjustments with possible resultant penalties and interest will be made

ActionAid Zambia calls for shut down of KCM to pave way for investigation, demands President Sata comments on KCM

Action Aid Zambia has demanded that KCM be shut to allow investigations take place so as ensure that Zambians know how much the mine makes.

Action Aid country director Pamela Chisanga observed that there is need for people to be told the truth about how much the mine makes in profits hence government should consider shutting the mine down for investigation if it does not know what is obtaining at the mine.

And Ms Chisanga demanded that President Micheal Sata gives the government’s position on the matter.

She said it was disheartening to see the government remain mute on the KCM saga.

Chisanga said the statement by KCM owner Anil Agarwal is serious and should be investigated.

Meanwhile Ms. Chisanga said the Police and the Anti Corruption Commission should come in to investigate the matter.

She said the matter is criminal and Police should not just be quick to arrest opposition leaders when they hold meetings.

Agarwal is on video saying he bought KCM for a paltry US$25 million and reaps US$500 million per year.

She has since given the PF government 7 days to give a conclusive position.

Zambian golfers flunk at 2014 Zambia Open

8

There was domestic carnage at 2014 Zambia Golf Open at Nkana Golf Club in Kitwe on Friday where one Zambian golfer was the last man standing.

Dayne Moore is the only one of 26 Zambian golfers comprising 12 professionals and 14 amateurs still in the hunt after Friday’s cut was made at the end of round two of the four-day event.

Some notable big name casualties were Madaliso Muthiya who finished a tied in 80th place at four-over.

Patrick Mwendapole too failed to make the cut and finished two shots behind Muthiya.

The tournament, which is taking pace in Kitwe for the first time ever, enters its penultimate round on Saturday.

Meanwhile, defending champion Adilson Da Silva of Brazil has made the cut after finishing at one-under and is nine shots adrift of leader Wallie Coetsee of South Africa.

Jacob Banda: Zesco will not underrate Green Eagles

0

Zesco United skipper Jacob Banda says the Ndola side will not underrate Choma Green Eagles in Saturday’s FAZ Super League match away in Southern Province.

Second placed Zesco have 18 points from eight matches prior to the match against 15th placed Eagles who have four points.

Banda, a goalkeeper, said Zesco will treat Eagles like any other opponent in the Super League.

“Eagles are a good team and we will take the match just like any other,” he said.

Zesco last Sunday beat National Assembly 2-1 at home while Eagles lost 1-0 at Green Buffaloes on the same weekend.

“We must not underrate them (Eagles), we must work hard in the game against Green Eagles,” Banda said.

Zesco have recorded two wins and three draws in their last five matches.

Ben Mwanza tells Mbesuma not to retire

2

Roan United captain Benard Mwanza believes Chipolopolo and Orlando Pirates striker Collins Mbesuma can play for more years before hanging his boots.

Mwanza was Mbesuma’s striker partner at Roan before the later joined Kaiser Chiefs in 2005.

Mbesuma has failed to break into Pirates’ lineup this year and his coach Vladimir Vermezovic claims that the striker’s body language at training suggests that of someone ready to retire from football.
But Mwanza said Mbesuma should be encouraged to continue playing.

“My friend should continue playing football,” he said.

Mwanza added:”My friend has a future in football and can rediscover
his old good form.”

He observed that a spate of injuries have negatively affected Mbesuma’s form.

“He has had many injuries and that has not done him any good,” he said.

Mbesuma has previously played for English side Portsmouth, CS Maritimo of Portugal and Turkey’s Bursaspor.

The 30-year old striker has also played for South African club’s Mamelodi Sundowns, Moroka Swallows and Golden Arrows.

Power visit National Assembly

FAZ Super League leaders Power Dynamos look set to end a three-game
winless streak when they face National Assembly away at Woodlands
Stadium in Lusaka on Saturday.
Power face Assembly in the 13h00 kick off match after recording three consecutive draws that has seen their lead cut to just goals by second placed Zesco United.

Both Power and Zesco have 18 points from eight matches although the Kitwe side enjoys a superior goal-difference.
Power take on Assembly who are wounded after Zesco ended their seven-match unbeaten with a 2-1 win in Ndola last Sunday.

Later at the same venue, Napsa Stars will host visiting Nchanga Rangers to complete the Saturday double-header in Lusaka.

Elsewhere, Choma Green Eagles will host Zesco in Southern Province while Roan United will welcome Red Arrows at Kafubu Stadium in Luanshya.

At Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe, Green Buffaloes begin life minus Coach Patrick Phiri when they face Konkola Stadium away in the border town.

This match will see Buffaloes interim head coach Bilton Musonda officially take over the mantel from Phiri who has been appointed Technical Director by the Namibia Football Association.

The match against Konkola offers a chance to Musonda to prove that he is equal to the task of coaching the Army outfit.

A suspected PF cadre employed under the judiciary this morning deliberately rammed his car into a group of UPND supporters seriously injuring five. The injured were part of a  large crowd of UPND supporters that converged at the Magistrate Court to offer solidarity to their leader Hakainde Hichilema.

UPND deputy general secretary Kuchunga Simusamba confirmed that the injured were rushed to UTH and two have since been admitted while one is said to be critical condition.

Mr. Simusamba said UPND supporters were standing outside the magistrate court when the man identified only as Mwewa drove his Corolla VVTI at full speed and crushed into the cadres.

“It is sad that our members are now in hospital for no apparent reason. We have identified the vehicle that bashed them. It was being driven by a PF cadre called Mwewa who ran into our supporters and injured the five,” Mr Simuusa said.

He added, “the same vehicle that hit the cadres also rammed into my vehicle and damaged my vehicle extensively.”

Mr. Simusamba said one cadre has been critically injured with his leg broken into two while the other four are in stable condition.

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema later visited his injured supporter at UTH.

Meanwhile, the case in which Mr. Hichilema is accused of publishing false news with intent to alarm the nation has been adjourned to 3rd July 2014.

Mr. Simusamba said they could not continue with the case because of what transpired outside the court.

Launch of Talent Zambia USA, brain child of Robert Sichinga Jnr.

Davis Chirwa(far left) Robert Sichinga Jnr(far right)

A simple yet innovative idea has been hatched to highlight Zambian talent. This is through the establishment of a platform to expose Zambian talent into the American market. Talent Zambia USA or just Talent Zambia, is the brain child of US-based Zambian born, Robert Sichinga Jnr.

Late last year Sichinga embarked on a mission to call different Zambian Talents and floated the idea of a platform on which they could have their own profile. The goal of which was as this platform was exposed and gained popularity, the talent represented would in turn also be promoted and exposed. With unanimous support, Talent Zambia USA was born. The talents represented on the site are based in Zambia, the US and other parts of the world. All Talent Zambia members receive a 1-2 page profile on the website at no cost. The Talent is asked to provide as much information as they want the world to see. Some profiles include music videos, movie clips or reals, pictures, news articles, professional bios, and links to other sites they might be part of. In addition to representation on the website, Talent Zambia will work to establish partnerships and contacts for the represented Talents.

As the Talent Zambia website took form Sichinga contacted Zambia born Seattle based Davis Chirwa, CEO of Channel ATV/DC Productions. Chirwa has many years of experience in the industry, spanning from TV/Video production, photography, and entertainment management. The two agreed to establish a partnership and committed to grow Talent Zambia. Sichinga and Chirwa began making calls to Zambian Talents. Shenky, a Zambian based singer, song writer and producer of Tinnah Touch productions, provided Sichinga with over 20 names and numbers of Zambian Talents immediately after hearing about the initiative. Talent Zambia represents models, actors, musicians, photographers, graphic designers, fashion designers and individuals in film and media production.

On Wednesday April 9, 2014, Talent Zambia was officially launched at the Marriot hotel in Marina Del Rey a beach city in Southern California. In addition to the invited guests, a few Talent Zambia members were present. Sichinga has also set up Talent Zambia Radio (www.talentzambiaradio.com) an online radio channel which carriers non-stop Zambian music. The music mixes on the online station are provided by Talent Zambia member DJs based in the US. ZedBeats, the largest online platform for Zambian music is also providing Talent Zambia with music mixes. Sichinga hopes that as Talent Zambia Radio gains popularity he would like to use it to air Zambian radio shows. Talent Zambia radio is available by going directly to www.talentzambiaradio.com or by downloading a cellphone or IPAD app called Radionomy and then finding Talent Zambia Radio station.

Several organizations have established strategic partnerships with Talent Zambia. The most recent includes a partnership with The Africa Vibes magazine based in California. The Africa Vibe magazine has agreed to provide Zambian content in their online and print magazine. The Zambia National Arts Council and the Zambia Association of Media Arts have both formerly endorsed Talent Zambia in addition to the Zambia Short Film Festival. Zambias Kings of Comedy are also part of Talent Zambia. Sichinga would like to introduce comedy sketches on Talent Zambia Radio, in addition to other activities to expose the group.

Vedanta responds to Youtube Video about their Chairman, video used out of context

Vedanta Resources has issued a media statement in response to the video that was posted on Youtube where the group chairman was telling business people in India that KCM was giving his group $500 million per year after just buying  the mine  for $25 million . In a statement released to the media, Group Communications Executive vice president Roma Balwani accused “one activist ”  for  taking a small part of the video of his  speech and used it negatively out of context.

Below is the full statement

Our Chairman, Mr. Anil Agarwal, recently addressed businesspeople in India when he spoke engagingly about the human side of running a multinational mining business. In an anecdote, he referred to Vedanta’s 2004 acquisition of KCM, our Zambian subsidiary. Unfortunately, one activist has taken a small part of the video of this speech and used it negatively out of context.

In his speech, Mr. Agarwal decided not to mention that since the acquisition, nearly all the returns from KCM have been reinvested back into KCM, as it simply wasn’t relevant to his anecdote. In fact, over nine years of ownership by Vedanta Resources, KCM has made $2.9 billion of capital investment and made just $73 million in dividend payments – a fifth of which is to the Zambian government.

Anil Agarwal, Chairman, said: “In the nine years of ownership by Vedanta Resources, KCM has made nearly $3 billion of capital investment and taken very little out. With our investment, we have invested heavily, extending the mine life, creating jobs and investing in the community. We are now Zambia’s largest employer and second biggest taxpayer.

“We are very thankful to the local communities, and very thankful to the government who have worked with us, and we remain fully committed to KCM and to helping the Zambian people and the Zambian nation develop and grow its natural resources.”

With that investment, the company has dramatically increased the mine life, dramatically increased employment, doubled real salaries there, provided technical and management training for thousands of Zambians, reduced the number of expatriates and continues to be Zambia’s second-biggest mining taxpayer. Furthermore, KCM has invested $120 million in local communities, providing schools, educational programmes, sustainable agricultural initiatives, critical medical programmes and funding for cultural events.

Tom Albanese, CEO, said: “KCM has a long mine life, and we are committed to see it through the near term challenges it currently has. We have made the investments, and now we’re making a commitment in terms of all aspects of the management, the stakeholder relations, the government dialogue, to make this the world-leading Company that it deserves to be. Our reinvestment in the business is not for the next three to six months, it’s being reinvested into the business for the next 50 years.”

Mr. Agarwal and Vedanta Resources continue to believe that KCM has a great future despite short-term operational challenges. He and the company remain fully committed to KCM and to helping the Zambian people and the Zambian nation develop and grow its natural resources.

I am Chitimukulu, says Sosala

Mr Henry Kanyanta Sosala has maintained that he is the rightful heir to the Chitimukulu throne and that the statement by President Michael Sata that he was masquarading was unfounded.

He said claims by President Sata that he was masquerading as Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba people were unfounded because President Sata did not belong to the Bemba Electoral College.
Speaking through his special advisor Mr Musonda Mwamba, the Mwinelubemba said that it was unfortunate that the Head of State could not leave issues of tradition affairs to the people that were supposed to deal with them.

Mr Mwamba said Mr Kanyanta Sosala was duly recognised and installed after observing all traditional requirements as Paramount Chief Chitimukulu Kanyanta Manga II of the Bemba people by the Bashilubemba and that it was time that President Sata accepted this decision.

He said it was unfair that instead of providing leadership aimed at uniting the Zambian people, President Sata was openly dividing the nation by interfering in traditional matters.

The Mwinelubemba’s advisor said all the traditional relics were handed over to the Mwinelubemba and that he had been accepted by all people except those who did not understand what the role of the Bemba Electoral College was all about.

“We are shocked that the Head of State has continued to despise what we the Bemba’s have decided but we don’t understand why he harbours so much hatred for our Paramount Chief. As Bemba’s we are happy that we have a Paramount chief in office and he is performing his duties diligently even if he has not yet occupied his royal palace.

“Nonetheless, ‘Apasangwa infumu epe sano’(wherever you find the chief, that is his palace) and he can perform duties bestowed on him. What Mr Sata is saying is something that we cannot describe because he is in his own world. If he cannot recognise our Mwinelubemba now, time will catch up with him because soon another President will recognise him,” Mr Mwamba said.

He said claims that the President degazeted Sosala as senior chief Mwamba in 2013 did not affect the Bemba selection process as the Bashilubemba had no issues with the current Paramount Chief and that they recognised that the Head of State had no powers to dictate to them on who should be the heir to the throne.

Meanwhile, Mr Mwamba said the Paramount chief Chitimukulu has not yet shifted to his royal palace despite the decision by the armed police officers to leave the palace.

He explained that the officers were still staying in the villages surrounding the palace because they did not see the reason why they had been assigned to guard the place.

He said the Bashilubemba would only allow the Mwinelubemba to occupy the palace once the State completely withdrew the officers it had deployed to the area.

Mining industry is projected to earn over US$1.3 billion next year-Shamenda

ZAMBIA’S mining industry is projected to earn over US$1.3 billion next year, Minister of Labour and Social Security Fackson Shamenda has said.

Mr Shamenda said the mining industry’s contribution to the gross domestic product is anticipated to grow to US$1.35 billion in 2015.

He said the mining sector’s contribution to the economy is significant.

Speaking at the Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) 13th quadrennial conference, Mr Shamenda said Government will ensure it creates a conducive environment for mining activities to thrive.

“Government is committed to diversifying the economy away from mining to sectors like agriculture and tourism. We still recognise the important role of mining to our economy,” he said.

Earlier, MUZ president Chishimba Nkole said the country is now seeing the dawn of a mining industry that has absorbed over US$2 billion in recapitalisation and refurbishment of old mine infrastructure and opening of new mining projects.

Mr Nkole said the new mining projects at Kansanshi, Kalumbila and Syncrinolium at Mopani copper mine continue to contribute to the extension of the life span and production capacities of the existing mining operations.

“The new set-up of mining activities, however, poses new challenges to the union’s drives and strategies for membership recruitment, union organisation and growth in light of trade union rivalry and competition in the mining industry,” he said.

He said it is crucial that the conference focuses on challenges facing MUZ and come up with an effective plan for the unions growth and strategies for better salaries, improved conditions of service, health and job security for members.

Mr Nkole said there is need for Government to come up with a clear poverty datum line which should be official and reliable. He also called on Government and mining companies to create a framework or policy to strengthen corporate social responsibility (CSR) to help monitor spending and measure results.

“This way, our country will truly benefit from its mineral wealth. We would like to see a CSR programme that involves all stakeholders and not just mining management deciding on their own what to do for the host communities,” he said.

Mr Nkole said when Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines was unbundled and privatised, Copperbelt towns saw the advent of high revenue collections by the city and municipal councils in property and land rates not only from actual mine premises but from many residential areas.

He said it is important that the public takes a keen interest in understanding the levels of revenue collections that the councils achieve from the mines as those are public funds that should contribute meaningfully to enhance CSR.

Nevers Mumba warned against putting President Sata under duress over the Constitution process

DEPUTY Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo has warned MMD president Nevers Mumba against putting President Sata under duress over the Constitution process.

Mr Kampyongo was reacting to threats by Dr Mumba that the opposition alliance will embark on protests to press for the release of the final draft Constitution.

“Nevers Mumba must not put President Sata under duress to respond to the letter they wrote concerning the issue of the Constitution. President Sata has many other letters and issues to attend to. He is a very busy man,” Mr Kampyongo said.

He advised Dr Mumba to be civil in his politics.

“We are all interested parties in the Constitution. In fact we represent more people than this so-called opposition alliance. They are only a handful of people who do not even match the number of people in my constituency,” Mr Kampyongo said.

He said the opposition alliance is at liberty to demonstrate as long as it fulfils the provisions of the Public Order Act.

“Yes, they can demonstrate over the constitution but we will not allow lawlessness. This ministry will not sit back and watch them bring confusion in the country,” he said.

Mr Kampyongo said Dr Mumba is excited and making unsubstantiated claims such as blaming the Patriotic Front for the woes the MMD is facing.
