Nkana striker and Power Dynamos target Evans Kangwa is reportedly on the verge of signing with SuperSport United of South
According to sources at Nkana, Kangwa was by Thursday expected to agree terms with SuperSport.
“We had enquired from foreign clubs like SuperSport, he has signed on with SuperSport. He (Kangwa) has been there for the last four days,” the highly placed Nkana source said.
“We are yet to conclude someone is finalizing negotiations on our behalf as we speak.”
Kangwa has scored 16 goals this season in all competition for Nkana.
The news could dash Power’s plans to snatch Kangwa away from their archrivals.
Kangwa quietly broke into Nkana first team just a season ago before exploding this term.
Power is trying to reinforce their team for their team for the team’s participation in the 2012 Caf Champions League.
With Kangwa seemingly on his way to Pretoria, Power could now focus luring 18-year-old Reynold Kampamba who is Nkana’s second top scorer on 9 goals.
However, Nkana are reluctant to release the teenager fearing he will not get game time under Fordson Kabole despite Power’s continued interest in the striker.
Two illegal vendors have just concluded a meal along Lumumba road in Lusaka, although they could have had a better and decent meal at a restaurant shown in the background
The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has warned street vendors to, with immediate effect, stop trading from the streets.
Council Public Relations Manager Chanda Makanta says the local authority will not tolerate anyone flouting the law by trading in undesignated places.
Ms. Makanta sounded the warning in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.
She said the local authority will soon swing into action and rid the streets of all street vendors to ensure there is sanity in the way people conduct their business.
She added that street vending has been of great concern to the public and the Council as it has contributed to making the city dirty.
Ms. Makanta said it is not true that by conducting business in undesignated areas, vendors would make more money than when they operate from markets.
She stressed that street vending shall remain an illegal active and that council will work towards ensuring that the practice is stopped at all cost.
She advised members of the public to refrain from buying from street vendors as this was a contributing motivational factor for them to continue selling from the streets.
Ms. Makanta added that the Council was willing to work closely with the Zambia Police in a bid to eradicate the streets of vending.
She called upon the newly appointed Inspector General of Police Dr. Martin Malama to work closely with the Council and ensure that street vendors were removed from the streets.
She added that making Lusaka clean by removing street vendors would assist the local authority uphold the Keep Zambia Clean Campaign.
Meanwhile, Ms. Makanta has disclosed that the Kulima Tower Bus Station is expected to be opened today.
She said the council was aware of threats by some bus drivers to protest against the delay in having the bus station operational.
Southern Province Minister Mr. Lukolo Katombora has admitted that an undisclosed number of bags of maize in certain parts of the province have not yet been secured to prevent the grain from been soaked by the rains.
Mr. Katombora notes that more needs to be done by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to secure all the maize bought by the agency in the province to prevent it from going to waste.
ZANIS reports that in an interview today, Mr. Katombora said a good number of bags risk being soaked if the FRA delays to protect them.
He cited areas such as Magoye, and parts of Kazungula Districts as some of the areas where the maize was yet to be properly covered with tarpaulins.
“Yes I can confirm that some maize at some depots in the province have not yet been properly secured and therefore I wish to instruct the FRA to quickly move in and cover all the maize in the province,” said Mr. Katombora.
He said the new government would not tolerate any one that would cause the maize to go to waste.
And Mr. Katobora has said the distribution of farming inputs to farmers under the Farmer Input Support Programme was going on well in all parts of the province.
He envisaged that all the farmers would receive the inputs before the onset of serious rains.
Meanwhile, Chief Kathumba of the Chewa speaking people of Katete district in Eastern Province has bemoaned the poor state of roads in his area.
Chief Kathumba says roads in his area have not been rehabilitated unlike in other chiefdoms of Kawaza and Mba’ngombe.
[pullquote]“Everything will go to waste if the Food Reserve Agency does not address the matter,” he said.[/pullquote]
He complained that his chiefdom has remained underdeveloped and that it has not fully benefited from the Rural Electrification project and yet ZESCO pylons pass just about 20 kilometers away from his palace.
The traditional leader was speaking yesterday when District Commissioner Anselimo Mbuzi called on him.
Chief Kathumba expressed hope that the Patriotic Front (PF) government would address some of the pressing issues people face in his area such as access to clean, safe drinking water.
Meanwhile, the traditional leader has expressed worry that maize stored at Nchingilizya mobile satellite depot was going to waste.
Chief Kathumba observed that some of the maize had started germinating saying the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) should quickly move in before the situation worsens.
“Everything will go to waste if the Food Reserve Agency does not address the matter,” he said.
And Katete District Commissioner Anseliomo Mbuzi assured Chief Kathumba that government would attend to the needs of the people in his area.
Mr. Mbuzi noted that government had already shown commitment to addressing the needs of traditional leaders by creating a new Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs.
“This ministry will look at challenges faced by chiefs in their chiefdoms and seek ways in which they can be addressed,” he said.
Jacob Mulenga’s availability for the 2012 Africa Cup is in great doubt after undergoing knee surgery on Wednesday.
The FC Utrecht’s official site reported that the 27 year old striker could be out of action for a minimum of 6 months.
Mulenga underwent surgery on his left knee for torn ligament.
“The knee was so-to-say cleaned on Wednesday to prepare for a recovery operation in three to four weeks. The process of revalidation has started as of now, but it will take at least six to nine months,” Utrecht’s clud doctor Frank van Hellemondt told fcunrecht.nl .
THE Road Development Agency (RDA) has terminated a contract for the rehabilitation of all the roads in Kabwe and Kapiri Mposhi districts in Central Province which was awarded to Chinese firm, Jiangsu Wujin Corporation following an alleged breach of the contract.
On Tuesday, some Kabwe residents protested against the poor state of most roads in the city and called for a thorough scrutiny of contractors who were allegedly paid without working on the roads.
RDA spokesperson Loyce Saili said the agency decided to terminate the contract because of failure by the contractor to follow laid-down procedures.
Ms Saili said the agency was in the process of engaging a new contractor but could not give further details on the matter, adding it was currently under investigations by law-enforcement agencies.
However, Times investigations in Kabwe revealed that the law-enforcement agencies had recorded statements from several officials, including those from the construction company.
Some sources said the agency terminated the contract last month after establishing that most road works in Kabwe had halted while equipment had been removed from the construction sites.
They said the contractor, who was also awarded another contract to repair some roads in Kapiri Mposhi, was paid K15 billion from the total amount of K117 billion.
Some students from Nkrumah University complained about the poor state of the road that the contractor had abandoned.
And some residents said in a walk-in interview with the Times in Kabwe that the area member of Parliament (MP) should address the matter and ensure contractors who had received payments but failed to fulfill their obligations were punished.
Isaac Mwila, on behalf of others, said the residents were aware that some contractors had received payments to repair roads that include Munkoyo Street which leads to Nkrumah University, and Buntungwa, but that no satisfactory work had been done so far.
He said as taxpayers, the residents of Kabwe wanted to see improved roads in the city and that it would be unacceptable for some contractors to go scot-free.
Efforts to get a comment from Jiangsu Wujin Corporation failed as the mobile phones were stitched off.
However, Kabwe Central MP James Kapyanga called for calm and reaffirmed the Patriotic Front Government’s resolve to address such matters.
MMD Lusaka Province chairperson William Banda has been slapped with new charges in connection with the Chongwe violence during the run up to the September 20 general elections.
Banda re-took plea yesterday together with four other suspects before a different magistrate, facing three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and another one for unlawful wounding.
Banda, 61, a politician and business executive of Lusaka’s Bauleni Township was jointly charged with four other business executive. The four, who were charged together with Banda and pleaded not guilty to all the four counts included Patrick Chungu, 31, Somili Mushiku, 39, Simon Banda, 32, and Sebastian Mainde of Kanyama, Old Chibolya and Garden townships, respectively.
Banda, Chungu, Mushiku, Banda (Simon) and Mainde, who appeared before Lusaka resident magistrate Rodgers Kaoma, said they understood the charges but pleaded not guilty to all of them.
It is alleged in count one that Banda, Chungu, Mushiku, Banda and Mainde on September 3 this year in Chongwe District of Lusaka Province jointly and while acting together did assault Priscilla Ndhlovu, thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm.
The five, who were charged with the offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, which was contrary to the Laws of Zambia, were also alleged to have in count two assaulted Andrew Lombe in Chongwe.
It is further alleged that Banda, Chungu, Mushiku, Banda (Simon) and Mainde jointly and whilst together on September 3, 2011 did assault Precious Malama thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm.
Banda, Chungu, Mushiku, Banda (Simon) and Mainde were in the fourth count charged with unlawful wounding of Lackson Kabimbi on September 3, 2011 in Chongwe which was contrary to the Laws of Zambia. And Magistrate Kaoma yesterday granted the four K15 million bail each in their own recognisance.
THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has postponed the poll date for the by-elections in Chongwe, Magoye and Nakonde parliamentary constituencies and thirty-five wards that were scheduled to be held on Thursday November 24 to Monday November 28.
According to a statement issued by ECZ public relations manager Cris Akufuna, the postponement has been necessitated by the grade 9 examinations which would be taking place on the 24th and 25th of November at the same venues for the by election.
“To this end, campaigns which were scheduled to end on 22nd November 2011 will go on until 26th November 2011 at 06:00hrs,” he said.

KAPA187: My favorite song of yours is “You can’t stop me” which features Jesse. For those who haven’t heard it yet, tell us about it.

THE power outage which engulfed the country yesterday resulted from a power system disturbance at Kabwe step-down substation which affected Kariba North Bank and Kafue Gorge Power stations, Zesco has said.
Zesco director of corporate affairs and business development, Bestty Phiri said in a statement yesterday that the disturbance caused the Kariba North Bank and Kafue Gorge Power Stations to trip as a standard protection measure. Mr Phiri said Zambia in the morning experienced a partial power outage except for Southern and Western provinces.
The power outage affected radio and television transmission for about 30 minutes but Zesco engineers took steps to restore power supply progressively in all the affected areas.
“Zesco therefore wishes to sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to our valued customers. We wish to thank our customers for their patience during the outage period,” he said. Mr Phiri said because of the outage, some of Zesco clients could have experienced meter tripping as a result of an inbuilt protective mechanism.
“We wish to advise all the affected pre-paid customers to report to our national call centre if they encounter any difficulties in resetting the meters, on Airtel and MTN on 322, Zamtel on 0211363636 or send and SMS to 3636,” he said. Meanwhile, Konkola Copper Mines Plc said the power outage which occurred around 06:30 hours in some parts of Zambia affected the company.
According to a Press statement released by the public relations department, the company’s emergency generation systems were brought into operation and additional emergency power was secured from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The statement said about 220 miners at Nchanga underground temporarily trapped in two cages were promptly evacuated to safety without any incident during the power outage. Normal power was fully restored around 10.30 hours and resumption of production commenced in phases.
THE Patriotic Front Government (PF) has admonished former Republican vice-president George Kunda and labelled him as an immoral person for moving a motion urging Parliament to review the human rights curriculum for law enforcement agencies in Zambia despite his alleged poor record on such matters.
Community Development, Mother and Child Health Deputy Minister Jean Kapata, in denouncing the motion which was seconded by Kalomo Member of Parliament (MP) Request Muntanga (UPND), said it was in bad faith and should be dismissed. “Mr Kunda has no moral right to bring such a motion. I was a victim of his brutalisation when I was arrested for honking; honourables Chishimba Kambwili, Davies Mwila and Mwenya Musenge suffered too.
“Our President Micheal Sata, he suffered at the hands of the MMD as he was arrested for 40 days, tear gassed at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and where was Kunda to talk about human rights issues?” Ms Kapata, who is Mandevu MP, said.
She said MMD Lusaka Province chairperson William Banda brutalised women and children in Chongwe and wondered where Mr Kunda was to champion human rights. “Mr Speaker it is an emotional motion, which is a mockery and should not be supported,” Ms Kapata said.
Finance and National Planning Deputy Minister Alfreda Kansembe condemned the motion, saying it lacked merit. Home Affairs Minister Kennedy Sakeni, in denouncing the motion, said from 1995, human rights had been part of the curriculum at Lilayi Police Training College.
“Programmes in this regard are already there and so how does one open a door that is already open? It is unnecessary for somebody to come up with a motion aimed at bringing out their lamentations about fears they have.
“Police won’t harass you like you did with the opposition,” Mr Sakeni, who is Mansa Central MP, said in reference to the mover of the motion. He said the PF Government wanted the police to operate professionally and that was why it had not locked up opposition MPs found wanting.
“Many of you are supposed to be behind bars. This motion is therefore irrelevant because it is seeking to do what is already in place,” Mr Sakeni said. Kawambwa MP Nickson Chilangwa (PF) said the motion was moved by a wrong person as it was under Mr Kunda’s reign that innocent people expressing their views in Mongu were brutalised and maimed.
Mr Chilangwa said it was also under the reign of Mr Kunda that people were shot at while watching football in Mazabuka, and that some people were shot in Mansa while another life was lost in Garden Township in Lusaka. Mr Kunda in moving the motion said in the 53 days of PF rule, the conduct of some police officers had deteriorated to unprecedented levels.
“They are violating the fundamental human rights of citizens and especially the rights of opposition political parties with impunity. They are on rampage brutalising the people (civilians) they are supposed to protect,” he said. In winding down the motion which was shot down through a vote by acclamation, Mr Kunda said a message had been communicated to the police as being for the people.
“As for the Mongu riots, I was asked by the Speaker to explain in this House what happened and of course we got briefs from operatives on the ground and was consistent with what I said. We spoke the same language,” Mr Kunda, who is Muchinga MP (MMD), said.
Others who supported the motion were Mumbwa Central MP, Brian Chituwo, Monze MP Jack Mwiimbu (UPND) and Cornellius Mweetwa for Choma Central (UPND). Mr Muntanga in seconding the motion stressed that it was aimed at addressing real issues.
And Parliament yesterday ratified the appointments of Mumba Malila and Rosewin Wandi as Attorney General and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) director general, respectively. Parliament also heard that former ACC director General Godfrey Kayukwa last week resigned from his job.
In moving the motion on the ratification of the presidential appointments, Mpika Central MP Mwansa Kapeya (PF) said Colonel Kayukwa submitted his resignation as ACC director general on November 3, 2011 and that the office of ACC director general was as at yesterday vacant.
Mr Kapeya urged the House to ratify the appointments of the two nominees because they were distinguished, competent, diligent, experienced, and mature officials.
2011 MTN/FAZ Super Division Champions Power Dynamos Captain Joseph Sitali has said the Arthur Davies outfit deserved to win the league title this season.
Striker Luka Lungu on Saturday scored a solitary goal in the 43th minute as Power Dynamos beat Zanaco 1-0 in Lusaka last Saturday at Sunset Stadium to wrap up the 2011 Super Division title with one round of matches remaining before the league ends.
Speaking to LT Sports by tin Kitwe, Sitali said hard work and prayers in the Power camp helped the team to win their first league title in 11 years.
The midfielder described the 2011 campaign as competitive and paid tribute to teams that give his side a good run for their money among them Red Arrows, Zanaco, Nkana and Green Buffaloes.
“The 2011 league was tough, many teams played well like Red Arrows, Zanaco and even Nkana played well we salute.” he said.
And some Copperbelt based Power Dynamos supporters have paid tribute to the Copperbelt Energy Corporation Sponsored side for winning the Super Division title.
Lombe Chipupu of Kitwe said by telephone that Power deserved to one the league adding that the team has performed well this season.
And Steven Kapalu of Chibuluma urged his team to work hard as they prepare to take part in the 2012 Orange African champions League.
The Football Association of Zambia in conjunction with league sponsors MTN will stage a championship coronation ceremony at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe on November 12 after their last Week 30 league game against Nkwazi.
Herve Renard has said midfielder Felix Katongo will be Zambia’s star player at next year’s Africa Cup.
Renard said after Wednesday’s final training in Lusaka that he was confident Katongo, who has suffered from a dip in form, will be fit enough for the tournament.
“Felix is not finished and he will be one of the best players for the Africa Cup of Nations,” Renard said.
Katongo has struggled for fitness after leaving Al Ittihad at the height of the upheavals in Libya at the start of this year.
The midfielder is currently at Green Buffaloes since the second half of the season after spending the first half of the 2011 campaign club searching abroad.
Meanwhile, Zambia depart for Johannesburg at 07:00 on Thursday for a three day training camp there en route to Nigeria for Tuesdays friendly to be played in Kaduna.
File: Workers from the Food Reserve Agency packing maize at a shed in Choma
Zambia exported more than 496,000 tonnes of maize to its neighbours from September last year to October this year after a bumper harvest left it with a surplus of 1.6 million tonnes, the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) said on today.
The maize exports went to Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, Burundi and Namibia, the FRA said in a statement.
The agency said over 496,000 tonnes valued at 427 billion kwacha ($86 million) sold on the export market and that about 300,000 tonnes valued at 250 billion kwacha sold on the local market.
Total maize stocks held by the FRA by October 2011 amounted to over 1.9 million tonnes, including about 300,000 tonnes in carryover stock from the previous season, it said.
The FRA planned to sell slightly over 1 million tonnes of maize as soon as possible and use the proceeds to pay back loans the agency obtained from commercial banks, it said.
Zambia’s maize production in the 2010/2011 season was projected to rise to over 3 million tonnes from the 2.8 million tonnes produced last year, a crop forecast showed in May
Stophila Sunzu and Jacob Mulenga have pulled out of Zambia’s November 15 friendly against Nigeria.
And TP Mazembe defender Emmanuel Mbola will not be part of the traveling party after all as his four-month FIFA ban also extends to friendly games.
Zambia coach Herve Renard said after Wednesday morning training at Independence Stadium in Lusaka that Sunzu sustained his injury at TP Mazembe’s training camp in Belgium.
“Stophila got injured while in camp in Belgium with TP Mazembe. He broke his arm,” Renard said.
“(Green Buffaloes defender) Dennis Banda will replace him will join us for the camp in Johannesburg.”
And Mulenga said he had pulled out of the friendy because of had an appointment with his doctor but was not injured.
Meanwhile, Christopher Katongo of Chinese side Henan Jienye joined camp on Wednesday and was in training with the rest of his team mates at Independence Stadium.
The team leaves for Johannesburg on Thursday where they will setup a three-day training camp before heading to Kaduna on Sunday.
The government of Zambia has given a waiver to China’s Jinchaun Group to take over Chibuluma copper mine without putting up a mandatory offer which would have seen the new owner buy off shares held by the Zambian Government and other minority shareholders.
Chibuluma mine is owned by South African-based and JSE-listed Metorex Limited, which is in the final stages of being taken over by the Jinchuan Group. In a statement jointly signed by the two parties, they said the Zambian Government had unconditionally and irrevocably consented to the completion of the scheme of the arrangement.
The statement said the Ministry of Finance and National Planning had also waived its rights to require Metorex to acquire its special share interest in the Metorex business over Chibuluma Mine, in which government holds a 15% stake through the ZCCM-IH.
“As a result of having obtained the mandatory offer waiver, Metorex is able to formally approach the Zambian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to obtain an exemption from any obligation to make a mandatory offer to minority shareholders of Chibuluma in accordance with the SEC regulations,” the statement said.
Exemption from the SEC from making a mandatory offer and securing consent from the People’s Republic of China are the only two steps left before the deal is concluded. With regard to the Chinese government consent, last month Jinchuan Group reported that progress had been made towards getting approvals and consents from the relevant authorities.
“Application documentation has been formally accepted by the relevant authorities, and Jinchuan advises that it believes the process is progressing well, and anticipates receiving the relevant approvals and consents in due course,” Metorex said.
