No doubt Hichilema felt intimidated by the swarm of PF officials at Umutomboko

27

By Venus N Msyani

What could be the reason why President Hakainde Hichilema left Umutomboko before ukutomboka?

President Hakainde Hichilema was invited to officiate at this year’s Umutomboko Traditional Ceremony of Lunda people of Mwansabombwe in Luapula Provinve, which he honored.

Unfortunately, the president didn’t witness the core ritual of the ceremony. He left before it took place and it has left the public debating.

PF Member of the Central Committee Chishimba Kambwili put a blame on United Party for National Development (UPND) officials. Particularly those who come from Luapula Province.

In a voice posted on YouTube Kambwili is heard arguing that Hichilema’s advisors from Luapula should have properly informed him about Umutomboko.

Kambwili says without witnessing the ritual, which is a dance by the chief (Mwata), one has not attended Umutomboko. In short, Kambwili is saying HH didn’t attend Umutomboko.

On what he calls Direct Talk on his Facebook, Economic and Equity Party (EEP) president Chilufya Tayali has revealed that his source has informed him that the president left Umutomboko early because there are no lights at the airport at night.

Meaning if the president didn’t leave before dark, he would have been forced to spend the night in Luapula, which would have affected his next day schedule. He was to officiate the opening of the 94th Agriculture and Commercial Show in Lusaka the following day.

It doesn’t make much sense. It is about one hour thirty minutes travel from Mwansabombwe to Lusaka by air.

Agriculture and Commercial Show official opening normally takes place after 8am. Meaning if the president left Mwansabombwe by daybreak the following day, he would still have managed to officiate the opening of the show.

Past record drives me to a deferent conclusion. Few months ago, it was alleged that Hichilema instructed state security to eject PF acting president Given Lubinda and his team from Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony of the Ngoni in Eastern Province.

Implying that Hichilema finds it uncomfortable to mingle with the opposition. To be specific, members of the Patriotic Front (PF).

The just ended Mutomboko ceremony was swarmed by Patriotic Front (PF) officials. Davis Mwila, Raphael Nakachinda, Richard Musukwa, Nickson Chilangwa, and the rest.

They appears to be the main reason why President Hichilema left the ceremony prematurely. Ejection of Lubinda and his team at Nc’wala caused a lot of criticism from the public. Hence, Hichilema could not play the same at Umutomboko. The best he could do was to leave.

After Nc’wala, HH has attended a number of traditional ceremonies. Including the most popular one, Kuomboka. No report of the president departing at the middle of the ceremony has been heard. The reason is because presence of PF officials in those ceremonies has been low. Not high enough to intimidate Hichilema. The swarm of PF officials at Umutomboko was to much for him.

Beware of patriarchy – in defence of Mary Chirwa

26

By Chimwemwe Mwanza

Our propensity to weaponise and politicise even the most miniscule of issues is legendary. Just how videos of a supposed high value female in nudes has captivated national discourse to the extent that some have labeled this a constitutional crisis baffles the mind.

Whatever the motive in leaking this video, its distributors have achieved a key outcome – which is to impugn and cast aspersions on the character of the actress in the salacious production. By extention, Mary Chirwa’s credibility as the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) head honcho, is in tatters and so is her suitability to lead the new government’s anti-graft crusade. In short, she is damaged goods.

No mincing words here, the inference herein is that DEC which is at the center of prosecuting several financial crimes allegedly committed by the previous dispensation is led by a sex charity and morally compromised individual. The gauntlet thrown at her to refute the allegation that she is the actress and producer of the video further lends credence to a much bigger sinister plot in play.

Chirwa has ignored this bait and instead opted to stay silent but silence is also an answer – though not a reassuring one when it comes to sex. She is either the starring in the video or not, can’t have it both ways. What are her options then? Does she hunker down and wait for the storm to subside or should she continue to hide under the pretext that people will eventually come to accept that this is a doctored video?

Whatever her choice, she is in a pickle and has little choice but to nip this speculation in the bud. At best she needs to show contrition and apologise for this poor error in judgement. It is not as though its murder she has committed but is entwined in a crime of passion. On reflection, US tele-vangelist, Jimmy Swaggart’s fall from grace reminds us that humans are fallible and Isaiah 53 verse 6 further reinforces this view. It reads: “All we like sheep have gone astray, each of us turning our own separate ways; and the lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

Encouragingly, she has the Presidency in her corner – critical for her support and rehabilitation. More commendable, the President has shown leadership by dismissing this as a sideshow aimed at distracting the serious works of the DEC. After all, don’t we all agree that sex is pleasurable – a fantasy which we all enjoy. Except that this one somewhat escaped the confines of privacy, aren’t such visuals intended to stimulate by stirring our minds into overdrive?

Patriarchy rearing its head

Unsurprising but disappointingly so, it is concerning that it is the male species that is leading the mob to lynch Chirwa at the altar of political expediency. And herein lies a challenge, such ingrained patriarchal tendencies pose the biggest threat to achieving gender parity in the work place, advancing female career development and in the process inhibiting socio-economic development.

The anguish extended to Chirwa is largely the product of a structured but flawed moral construct that suggests that men’s mistakes have less moral impact on society compared to mistakes committed by women. Put simply, men have set up a moral code and standard to which women ought to subscribe to hence arguments like ‘ubuchende bwamwaume tabu toba in’ganda kano ubwamwanakashi.’ This is what is at play here.

Even more embarrassing is the utterance by Godfridah Sumaili – the former Minister for Religious Affairs calling for the person in the video to be prosecuted. Sumaili knows too very well who the actress in the video is and for her, she is aiming a cheap political shot at the current government through a crudely stitched innuendo. The inference here being ‘Moneni sure abaleteka ichalo.’ Put differently, would the former Minister have reacted in this manner – say if this video was created by someone close to her?

This is extremely troubling coming from a Reverend who spent a sizeable tenure of her stint in office laying fertile grounds for politicization of the church. It is during her tenure that we saw the emergence of Christian groups openly siding with political parties. This the person that today is parading herself as a high priestess of moral correctness. So much for forgiveness. Even then, you have to forgive Sumaili for such bigotry, Chirwa is such a stunner.

Brick by brick, we need to consciously start dismantling the centuries old foundations of sexism laid by ancient Greek philosophers, Aristotle, Plato and Hippocrates among others and premised on the notion that the male is superior by nature and the female considered inferior is created to serve man. Whatever this means, tuli mu 2022 mwebantu.

Reduced fuel prices elates motorists

17

The Energy Regulation Board ( ERB )’s move to adjust the pump price has elated most motorists in Zimba Town, Southern Province.

Last evening, ERB Board Chairperson Reynolds Bowa announced the reduction of petrol price at K3.56 and K3 .14 for diesel effective mid-night last night.

The price of Kerosene too has reduced to K16.09 from K18.93 respectively.

The motorist interviewed expressed happiness at the development.

Among these is Mr John Chuma, a driver, who said that he is happy that the reduction in fuel price saying the development will soon reduce the commodity prices in the area.

“This reduction in fuel pump prices is a good move by Government and I commended it,” he said.

His counterpart , Robert Mwiinga, too, welcomed the reduction saying more people would able to manage and afford to travel in public transport.

“K3 plus makes a difference, because if for example, I have a K50 am assured of two liters to take passengers that go to nearby places,” he said.

Another motorist, Mutinta Choongo is optimistic that the reduction in fuel prices will help to reduce in bus fares.

ERB Board Chairperson Bowa attributed to downwards trends in fuel prices on the international market.

Mr. Bowa adds that the reduction is triggered by the stability of the local currency, the Kwacha on the foreign exchange market.

Petrol is now costing K23.19 ngwee from K26.75 Ngwee and diesel at K24.87 Ngwee from K28.01 Ngwee.

Ministry of Information lobbies for tax waiver on imported media equipment

10

Minister of Information and Media, Chushi Kasanda says her ministry has engaged the Ministry of Finance and National Planning over the possibility of a tax waiver on imported media equipment.

Ms Kasanda says considering the high import tax on imported media equipment and materials she feels has affected the smooth operations of the local media, her ministry has been engaging Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane led ministry on the possibility of a tax waver on the media equipment.

The Media and Information minister made the remarks during her tour of a number of media stands at the on-going National Agriculture and Commercial Show being held under the theme: “ Innovation through technology transforms business.”

“The PS and I have been in consultation with other Ministries including the Ministry of Finance and we are looking at the fact that most of the equipment you bring into the country is expensive so we are trying to see if we can find a waiver for that,” she said.

In view of the advanced technology in this Information Technology and Communication ( I.T.C ) era, especially, the local media continues to face operational hitches in procuring state of the art media equipment such as cameras and drowns other than printing press that often attract high taxes.

These operational challenges among others have grossly affected media operations and expansion in the country.

In addition to the above concerns, majority of journalists are poorly paid making them easy prey to their sources especially during election campaign time.

And commencing her tours of various media stands at the 94th Agriculture and Commercial show, Ms Kasanda begun with the ZANIS stand, followed by ZAMCOM and the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) all housed in the same pavilion.

Accompanied by her Permanent Secretary Kennedy Kalunga and ministry officials , Ms Kasanda then proceeded to the ZNBC pavilion, where she urged the national broadcaster to improve on its viewership coverage .

“ This is by coming up with adverts during prime slots advertising popular entertainment programming, “ she emphasised.

Ms Kasanda also toured the Sun FM Radio and Television stand before wrapping up the tour with the Zambia Daily Mail and Times Printpak stand and lastly the Prime TV pavilion.

Speaking in an interview with journalists after the tour, the Minister commended the media houses for exhibiting at the show.

“I’m very happy with the way our media houses have exhibited this year. I’m sure there has been a lot of revenue that has been generated, all the stands have been filled up, looking at the fact that people were not able to exhibit in two years during the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

The Minister also called for increased collaboration between the private and public media.

The Ndola Town Clerk said the council had come up with a robust public fire safety awareness programme with the objective of reducing fire incidents.

She called on Ndola residents to support the Fire Service in the city by quickly alerting the fire fighters whenever a fire broke out.

The Fire Brigade is conducting the sensitisation exercise in all four constituencies in selected markets that include Mapalo, Nkwazi, Kawama, Chifubu, Masala, Lubuto, Old Mushili and Kansengu.

“We are marking a launch of this fire incidents awareness in all the four constituencies in Ndola. We will raise awareness in selected markets in these four constituencies. We have started with Mapalo and we will also touch Nkwazi, Chifubu, Lubuto, Old Mushili, Lubuto and Kansengu. We are visiting these places to sensitize people on fire incidents,” Ms. Songolo said.

“We want to ask you, when we come to respond to fire incidents, we want your support. It is not time to raise stones and hit us. We want your support. We will do our best to ensure that you are serviced properly. Take note of that number to call 993, call and we will respond swiftly,” she said.

Chief Fire Officer Wellington Mulambo revealed that assorted property worth K2, 000,000 was destroyed by fire in various parts of the city last year alone.

Mr. Mulambo said electrical connections, braziers and candle light are the main sources of fire in commercial and residential properties.

Mr. Mulambo said there is need for concerted efforts in fire prevention and advised citizens against stoning fire fighters.

“The record I have for last year of damage caused by fire incidents. Last year fire damaged property worth about K2, 000,000 as of 2021 only. Most fire incidents occur in the cold season and when it is windy. We are talking about going from June to August. Our desire is that fire incidents come to an end,” Mr. Mulambo said.

New Dawn government’s commitment to continue with the expansionary approach to private sector participation-HH

1

President Hakainde Hichilema has reiterated the New Dawn government’s commitment to continue with the expansionary approach to private sector participation in the economic transformation agenda for job creation and poverty reduction.

President Hichilema is urging the private sector to fully engage and utilize the newly established public private dialogue forum for development to rapidly resolve barriers to private sector business development and growth.

He said the Government has tasked the public institutions, among them regulatory bodies, to constructively ease business registration and licensing requirements to aid private sector participation in the economy.

Speaking at the official opening of the 94th Agriculture and Commercial show, Mr. Hichilema noted that the show presents the perfect opportunity for businesses and other stakeholders including regulators and authorities to trade, network, and share knowledge and ideas on economic transformation.

“May we take this opportunity to indicate that the presence of a large number of international guests, investors, researchers, foreign exhibitors and other countries participating in this show, reaffirms our government’s commitment to opening up our country for business. Zambia is indeed open for business. We also thank all the sponsors and the show society for putting together this magnificent show. May we also pay tribute to our farmers, who in the face of turmoil spurred by a combination of climate change, global geopolitical tensions which have affected both the cost and flow of production inputs, and a Covid 19 pandemic that has continued to disrupt production endeavors on a scale never seen before, still ensured that Zambia and our citizens remained relatively food secure,” President Hichilema said.

“The show, therefore, presents the perfect opportunity for businesses and other stakeholders including regulators and authorities to trade, network, and share knowledge and ideas on how we can transform the economy, increase agricultural production for job creation, household and national wealth creation, as well as fight poverty amongst our people. In this regard, the government established the ministry of technology and science to reposition and spearhead the use of technology and innovation as a means to drive the digital transformation agenda for growth and development, with a target to increase internet penetration to 80 percent by 2026, from 52.9 percent in 2020,” he said.

The Head of State continued:”For instance, in the agricultural sector, we are seeing the increasing use of digital platforms in pest and disease surveillance, diagnosis and early warning, trade facilitation, and the delivery of extension messages to farmers through e-extension (ict).technology is also being used in the development of improved crop varieties and breeding stock, mechanisation, and climate smart agricultural practices, resulting in a significant increase in yields for farmers, and an improvement in the livelihoods of our people. In delivering inclusive and sustainable socio – economic growth and development, it is imperative that we pursue inclusivity in the use and application of technology and innovation, as we robustly work to address the needs of women, the youth, persons with disabilities and underserviced areas in rural areas to promote inclusive and sustainable growth.”

President Hichilema further emphasized the role that the remodeled CDF can play in boosting local agriculture production and food security.

“As we conclude, we wish to reiterate the government’s commitment to continue with our expansionary approach to private sector participation in our economic transformation agenda for job creation and poverty reduction. We urge the private sector to fully engage and utilize the newly established public private dialogue forum for development to rapidly resolve barriers to private sector business development and growth. We have, further, tasked our public institutions, among them regulatory bodies, to constructively ease business registration and licensing requirements to aid private sector participation in the economy. May we also perhaps take the liberty to emphasize the role that the remodeled CDF has and can play in boosting local agriculture production and food security, by leveraging partnerships with well established farming businesses. Note that some constituencies such as Zambezi west have invested in agricultural equipment,” President Hichilema concluded.

“Moto” Project aimed at equipping 10 female broadcast journalists launched

1

The Free Press Initiative (FPI) in partnership with the BBC Media Action has launched the “Moto” Project aimed at equipping 10 female broadcast journalists from 9 provinces of Zambia with training and expertise in current affairs and investigative journalism.

Free Press Initiative Founder Joan Chirwa explained during the launch of the Moto Project was born out of the realisation that female journalists require training support, hence the project run for an overall period of 9 months and during this period which began in May this year, the participants were tasked to produce six pieces of journalism products: one long investigative journalism piece, a fact-checking and verification piece, a news bulletin, an online package, an on-location reporting piece and one interview in the ‘hard talk’ format.

“Some of these ladies (whom I proudly refer to as moto girls) have already completed their investigative journalism pieces, with other participants set to finish theirs soon,” she said

Ms Chirwa added that this project offers an opportunity to tell unheard stories, stories covered under the veil of secrecy, thus the women in this program will bring out the sharp focus of skilful journalism to their communities and to Zambia as a whole.

She stated that FPI is mindful that journalists are operating under a difficult media environment, and challenging as it may be, the women under the Moto Project are charged and equipped with the necessary skills, because operating in such an environment, professional, coherent and timely journalists are needed more than ever.

Ms Chirwa said that she is more than confident that these women will produce such journalists, as their work will also promote justice, expose truth, and deliver important stories to the public, for this project represents a step forward not only for journalism in Zambia, but also for women’s equity and recognition.

The launch of the Moto Project was graced by Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Kennedy Kalunga who expressed commendations to the Free Press Initiative and BBC Media Action for coming up with this project to train 10 female journalists from 9 provinces of the country with the necessary skills and knowledge required to do stories that have been perceived to be for the male journalists.

Mr Kalunga added that over the years, female journalists have shunned away from carrying out in-depth investigative stories because of many reasons, among them lack of proper skills to motivate them to do investigative stories.

He noted that the Ministry of Information and Media is glad to support the efforts of the BBC Media Action and the Free Press Initiative in ensuring that those in charge of disseminating information are equipped with the necessary skills to inform and dig deeper information that is needed to inform and educate the country on issues affecting them.

“The New Dawn Administration understands the importance of transparency and we should therefore, be held accountable for every decision made that affects the citizens of this country,” he said

Mr Kalunga stated that the Ministry of Information and Media, understands that another component of this project is to train the participants of the project on in-depth reporting which is believed to be very important when reporting on a particular subject, it is therefore, hoped that some change in the way that reporting will be done especially with the rise of misinformation and disinformation on social media will be seen.

“The Ministry is committed to media freedom as long as the media is responsible and accountable to what they do,” he stated

The Permanent Secretary thanked The Free Press Initiative and BBC Media Action for the support being rendered towards the implementation of the project for without their support, this project would be impossible to accomplish.

“We further hope to see more of this project so as to equip many more journalists with these skills, as this project reflects a definition of cooperation,” he said

Wealthy American dentist is accused of killing his wife on safari in Zambia. He says she accidentally discharged the gun

9

Lawrence and Bianca Rudolph shared a passion for big game hunting.

In late September 2016, the couple traveled from their Phoenix home to Zambia, where Bianca Rudolph was determined to add a leopard to her collection of animal trophies. They carried two guns for the hunt: a Remington .375 rifle and a Browning 12-gauge shotgun.
After killing other animals during the two-week trip but not a leopard,Bianca Rudolph never made it home. She suffered a fatal shotgun blast in their hunting cabin at dawn as she was packing to return to Phoenix, federal prosecutors allege in court documents.

Now Lawrence Rudolph, 67, is charged with foreign murder and mail fraud in the death of his wife of 30 years. He has pleaded not guilty, and took the stand in his own defense this week at his trial in Denver, CNN affiliate KMGH reported.

“I did not kill my wife. I could not murder my wife. I would not murder my wife,” he told jurors.

Rudolph told investigators he heard the shot while he was in the bathroom and believed the shotgun accidentally went off as she was putting it in its case, court documents say. He found her bleeding on the floor of their cabin at Kafue National Park, he says.

But federal prosecutors allege Rudolph killed his wife for insurance money and to be with his girlfriend.

CNN has reached out to Rudolph’s attorney, David Markus, but has not heard back.
In a motion filed in January by Rudolph’s attorney, David Markus, listing his client’s assets, he said Rudolph had no financial motive to kill his wife. In the court document, he noted that Rudolph is worth millions, including a dental practice near Pittsburgh valued at $10 million.

Life insurance companies based in Colorado paid Rudolph over $4.8 million after his wife’s death, according to court documents.

The rush to cremate his wife sparked suspicion, investigators say

In court documents, investigators allege Rudolph quickly sought to cremate his wife’s body in Zambia after the shooting.
Rudolph scheduled a cremation three days after her death, according to court documents. After he reported her death to the US Embassy in the Zambian capital of Lusaka, the consular chief “told the FBI he had a bad feeling about the situation, which he thought was moving too quickly,” FBI special agent Donald Peterson wrote in the criminal affidavit.

As a result, the consular chief and two other embassy officials went to the funeral home where the body was being held to take photographs and preserve any potential evidence. When Rudolph found out the embassy officials had taken photos of his wife’s body, he was “livid,” Peterson wrote.

Rudolph initially told the consular chief that his wife may have died by suicide, but an investigation by Zambian law enforcement ruled it an accidental discharge, Peterson wrote. Zambian investigators concluded that the firearm was loaded from the previous hunting activities and normal safety precautions were not taken, causing it to accidentally fire in the fatal incident, according to court documents.

Investigators for the insurers reached a similar conclusion and paid on the policies.

“Zambian authorities and five insurers determined that Bianca Rudolph died accidentally. Witnesses told the FBI that Dr. Rudolph did nothing to interfere in the investigation. No physical evidence supports the government’s murder theory,” Markus wrote in the January motion.

The suspect wanted to be with his girlfriend, prosecutors allege

But federal investigators say there’s more to the story.

Rudolph orchestrated his wife’s death as part of a scheme to defraud life insurance companies and to allow him to live openly with his girlfriend, the FBI alleges.

Federal authorities got involved after a friend of the victim reached out to the FBI and asked the agency to investigate the death because she suspected foul play. The friend said Rudolph had been involved in extramarital affairs in the past and had a girlfriend at the time of his wife’s death.

Rudolph’s then-girlfriend, who was not named in the court documents, worked as a manager at his dental practice near Pittsburgh, and told a former employee that she’d been dating him for 15 to 20 years, Peterson wrote. The former employee told the FBI that the girlfriend told her she gave Rudolph an ultimatum of one year to sell his dental offices and leave his wife, court documents allege.

Three months after Bianca Rudolph’s death, the girlfriend moved in with him, Peterson wrote in court documents. An executive director of their subdivision’s community association told investigators that Rudolph and his girlfriend tried to buy another home in the same subdivision for $3.5 million.

Her wounds didn’t reflect an accidental discharge, FBI says

Court documents also allege that evidence shows Bianca Rudolph’s wounds came from a shot fired from at least two feet away.
“An FBI special agent conducted testing to determine, by comparison to photographs from the scene of the death, the approximate position of the shotgun muzzle within the soft case at the time of discharge, as well as the resulting shot patterns created by firing the shotgun with the case over the barrel at various distances,” the criminal complaint states.

A forensic medical examiner determined the patterns matching the wound observed in photographs of the body were created by a shot from a distance of between two and three-and-a-half feet.

“At that distance, there is reason to believe that Bianca Rudolph was not killed by an accidental discharge as stated,” the complaint states.

Bianca and Lawrence Rudolph moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona about four years before her death. Rudolph’s dental practice remained in Pennsylvania, and he commuted back and forth from his Phoenix home.

Federal authorities allege his wife’s murder was premeditated so “he could falsely claim the death was the result of an accident.”

But Markus has accused federal officials of relying on “shaky evidence.” Rudolph’s two children are confident their father did not kill their mother, Markus said, and they’ve signed affidavits in his support.

If convicted of murder, Rudolph faces a maximum of life in prison or the death penalty.
