Red Arrows Face Simba Challenge in CAF Confed Cup Dreams

Red Arrows must successfully navigate past Tanzanian champion Simba SC to attain their debut CAF Confederation Cup group stage dreams.

Arrows were drawn against Simba in the playoff draws conducted in Cairo on Tuesday while their Lusaka rivals Zanaco have a date against Binga FC of Mali.

Simba were relegated to the CAF Confederation Cup after Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana booted them out of the CAF Champions League second stage.

Arrows will visit Simba in the first leg on November 28 and host the side that has Chipolopolo midfielder Larry Bwalya on their roster on December 5 at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

Simba will return to Zambia for the first time since they ejected Nkana from the pre-group stage of the 2018/2019 CAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, Zanaco will start at home against Binga on November 28 at Heroes Stadium.

Zanaco will make their first-ever continental trip to Mali on December 5.
The Bankers are aiming to return to league phase action since the 2019/2020 CAF Confederation Cup when they qualified to the quarterfinals for the first-time ever.

Zanaco were demoted to the CAF Confederation Cup after Al Merreikh of Sudan ejected them from the CAF Champions League second round.

More welcome suspension of Kasenseli gold operations

A senior citizen in the Mwinilunga district in Northwestern province has welcomed government’s decision to suspend operations at Kasenseli gold mine.

Jevius Musesa, who is also a member of the district council of elders, has praised the new dawn government for listening to the cries of the people in the area concerning mining activities at Kasenseli.

“We are happy with this government for being a listening government,” Bishop Musesa said.

He told ZANIS in an interview today that in future, operations at the mine must produce tangible benefits for the host communities and the nation as whole.

Bishop Musesa said listening to concerns from ordinary people was key to realising development for the grassroots.

He has however asked government to heed the calls by the people not to maintain Zambia Gold Company (ZGC) at the mine but engage a different investor who will be able to work in harmony with the host community.

“The issue of maintaining ZCCM-IH and Zambia Gold Company at Kasenseli is still not welcome for us,” he said.

Bishop Musesa has further advised government to deploy military personnel from the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to the mine to protect the resources from being looted during the suspension period.

On Friday, October 22nd, 2021, Minister of Mines, Paul Kabuswe suspend operations and processing activities at Kasenseli gold mine citing poor safety measures and a sour relationship with the host communities among other reasons.

Two days ago, Chief Chibwika of the Lunda people in Mwinilunga district also welcomed the move taken by government to suspend mining operations at Kasenseli gold mine.

Government will improve access to safe drinking water for the people of Muchinga province-Hichilema

President Hakainde Hichilema says his government will improve access to safe drinking water for the people of Muchinga province.

President Hichilema said access to safe drinking water will be improved in the province through various water projects.

The President, who was speaking when he toured the Chambeshi water reticulation project in Chinsali today, said the government will render all the necessary support for the completion of the project.

He said the completion of the Chambeshi water project reticulation will facilitate for the continuous supply of safe drinking water to residents in the district.

“I am impressed with this project as it will improve the access to water by the ordinary villager here,” he said.

The republican President has since urged Chambeshi water management to consider the use of a solar-based power to reduce on the cost of electricity to run the plant.

And Chambeshi Water and Sanitation Company Managing Director, Luckson Simumba said the Chinsali water project is at 98 per cent complete and is expected to be fully operational by November 19, 2021.

Mr. Simumba told the President that only a sewer system is remaining to be completed and installed as well as the operationalization of two treatment plants.

He explained that the objective of the company is to supply safe and clean running water throughout the day.

“With the support of government, we will be able to achieve this goal of continuous water supply,” he said.

Mr. Simumba also told the President that the company is planning to extend its services to surrounding rural areas.

President Hichilema was in Chinsali district on a one- day working visit.

Shepolopolo are through to the final qualifying round of the 2022 African Women’s Championship after eliminating Malawi 4-3 on aggregate.

Zambia on Tuesday afternoon edged Malawi 3-2 at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka in the return leg just six days after the first leg tie finished 1-1 in Lilongwe.

Shepolopolo held on to win the match despite being scared twice by the visiting Scorchers at home.

Defender Lushomo Mweemba scored the winner in the last fifteen minutes when the game was heading for a 2-2 draw that would have sent Zambia packing.

The Malawians took an early lead at Nkoloma when Asimenye Simwaka scored after seven minutes but Zambia equalised through two-goal star Rachael Kundananji in the 24th minute.

Kundananji completed her brace on 41 minutes to help Zambia take a 2-1 lead into the half time break.

Wezi Mvula scared the home side when making it 2-2 in the 71st minute but Mweemba had the final say on the final result after poking in the winner three minutes later.

Zambia will face Namibia in the two-legged final qualifying round.

Access Bank buys off Atlas Mara in Zambia

Access Bank Group, straight from acquiring Cavmont bank in Zambia has announced its intentions to grow its Zambian business by announcing a “merger” with Atlas Mara.

The West African bank has announced that it is merging its Zambian operations – Access Bank Zambia and Atlas Mara Zambia, but the statement also confirmed that the enlarged operation will be called Access Bank Zambia.

Upon completion of the transaction, Access Bank expects to retain or increase current shareholding in Access Bank Zambia

Access Bank Zambia will have over 70 branches and agencies, approximately $1 billion in total assets and over 300,000 customers after the merger

Transaction will not require significant additional capital investment from Access Bank

Deal is expected to be concluded in 2022, subject to regulatory approvals in Nigeria and Zambia.

Access Bank Group CEO Herbert Wigwe in a statement on the Nigerian Exchange website. stated that “this transaction is a milestone that brings us closer to our broader strategic objectives. The merger of Atlas Mara Zambia and Access Bank Zambia is expected to augment our presence in Zambia and the wider COMESA region.”

The Access Bank Group CEO has also hinted that its newly recruited country manager Lishala Situmbeko will lead the merged entity which effectively means that this may be at the expense of the Atlas Mara top management team.

President Hichilema commended for honouring freedom fighters

President Hakainde Hichilema has arrived in Chinsali district in Muchinga province. President Hichilema’s plane touched down at Chinsali airstrip at exactly 10:57 hours.

While in Chinsali, the President is expected to hold meetings with traditional leaders and officials from the United Party for National Development (UPND).

The President is also expected to inspect the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) provincial studios, Chinsali water project as well as visit the General Hospital before holding a wreath laying ceremony at the burial site of the late freedom fighter Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe.

And a senior citizen in Chinsali district has commended Hakainde Hichilema for honouring gallant men and women who fought for the liberation of Zambia.

Hearings Sabi told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in an interview that the gesture has shown that the President Hichilema cares for freedom fighters.

Mr. Sabi said there was need to appreciate freedom fighters for their sacrifice which resulted in the peace and unity Zambian citizens have enjoyed since independence.

“The freedom fighters had put their lives of a chopping board for them to earn and secure the political and freedom that we have enjoyed since 1964,” he said.

Mr. Sabi added that President Hichilema has demonstrated respect for honouring freedom fighters especially those in Chinsali district.

He explained that laying a wreath at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe’s grave in the district will be memorable and will add to the history of Chinsali which produced a number of freedom fighters.

Mr. Sabi has meanwhile appealed to the President to continue honouring the gallant men and women.

And a freedom fighter, Rodwell Mwansabamba, has appealed to government to consider assisting freedom fighters financially saying most of them are suffering and need urgent help from government.

Mr. Mwansabamba said by doing so, freedom fighters will live a better life.

He further thanked President Hichilema for honouring the late freedom fighters who are buried in various provinces.

“I wish our President long life for remembering and honouring freedom fighters in the nation including those in Chinsali, may he live long and remain blessed,” he said.

3 Zambians nabbed for attempting to smuggle 50 illegal immigrants

Three people have been arrested in Vubwi district in Eastern province for attempting to smuggle 50 illegal immigrants into Zambia.

The three, include two brothers Gift Sakala, 34 of Katete and Rodgers Sakala, 30 of Chadiza district and another person John Mumba, 41, of Kalingalinga compound in Lusaka.

Gift is said to be the ring leader of the group that attempted to transport the 50 illegal immigrants in Zambia.

Eastern Province Acting Commanding Officer of Police, Davis Simwanza, confirmed the development to ZANIS, stating that the three were jointly charged and will remain in police custody.

“The three Zambians were jointly charged with smuggling in human beings under section 9, sub section 1 of the anti-human trafficking act and are in police custody,” he said.

Mr. Simwanza added that 50 foreign nationals, who were being smuggled, are of Ethiopian origin and have since been surrendered to the Immigrations Department for further action.

He said of the total number, three were arrested in the morning yesterday while 43 others were intercepted in Vubwi district in the evening of the same day.

He added that the remaining four foreign national were intercepted from Chadiza district.

Mr. Simwanza explained that during the operation in Chadiza district two Toyota Corolla vehicles and one Mitsubishi Canter truck, which were being used in the human trafficking syndicate, were impounded.

“The canter is still in the bush because it broke down but the two Toyota Corollas are impounded at Chadiza police,” he said.

And according to eye witnesses, the foreign nationals were discovered by villagers in Nyamandevu mountains bordering Chadiza and Vubwi districts.

The eye witnesses narrated that the villagers tried to lead the illegal immigrants into the mountains to hide only to be intercepted by the police.

Meanwhile, information obtained by ZANIS indicates that the 50 Ethiopians are alleged to have left their country two weeks ago.

President Hichilema terminates Contract for Zambia Security Intelligence Service (ZSIS) Director General

President Hakainde Hichilema has with immediate effect terminated the contracts of Zambia Security Intelligence Service (ZSIS) Director General, Hector Sikazwe and his deputy Edith Mwenya.

President Hichilema has relieved the two of their duties pursuant to Articles 92(1), 92(2) (f) and 270 of the Constitution of Zambia.

Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations, Anthony Bwalya, said in a statement to ZANIS that President Hichilema has since thanked Mr. Sikazwe and Mrs. Mwenya for their services to the government and wished them well in their future endeavors.

And President Hichilema has appointed Friday Nyambe as Director General of the Zambia Security Intelligence Service, replacing Mr. Sikazwe.

Mrs. Mwenya has been replaced by Francis Mwale as Deputy Director General of the Zambia Security Intelligence Service.

“Both appointments are in exercise the of powers vested in the President by Article 92(2)(f) of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia, as read with Section 4(1) and (2) of the Zambia Security Intelligence Service Act No. 14 of 1998 respectively,” Mr. Bwalya said.

The Head of State has since congratulated Mr. Nyambe and Mr. Mwale on their new appointments and wished them God’s blessings as they discharge their duties.

The Rot at Zambian Airways: The Board clears CEO of wrong doings

The Board of Directors of Zambia Airways has resolved that allegations of abuse of workers rights leveled against Ethiopian CEO Bruk Endeshaw are unfounded.

After a special Board meeting convened on Friday last week to deliberate on the findings and recommendations of the Special Committee constituted to inquire into the allegations against the Chief Executive Officer, the Board established that a number of the allegations made were not substantiated.

The Board further established that the allegations could not be substantiated said this could not therefore be the basis for any action against Mr Endeshaw.

According to Board Chairperson Bonaventure Mutale, the Board also noted that the employees’ conduct was reprehensible as they did not have any right to demand for the removal of the Chief Executive Officer and resolved that most of the Special Committee’s recommendations will be implemented later after the operationalisation of the Airline.

He accused the employees of staging an illegal strike adding that disciplinary action will be meted out in due course in accordance with the Conditions of Service and the Disciplinary Code.

Mr. Mutale said the launch of the Airline is only five weeks away hence it is imperative that this process is not disrupted in any manner whatsoever.

Among the recommendations made by the Special Committee were that all employees should be inducted on the Company’s Conditions of Service and the Disciplinary Code and that the Chief Executive Officer and the Executive Team should undergo a corporate governance training program.

STATEMENT BY THE BOARD OF ZAMBIA AIRWAYS LIMITED

Lusaka, 22nd October 2022 – As earlier advised, the Board of Directors of Zambia Airways convened a Special Board Meeting on the 20th October 2021 to deliberate on the findings and recommendations of the Special Committee that was constituted to inquire into the allegations made by a group of 8 employees against the Chief Executive Officer.

The Board noted observations of the Special Committee that a number of the allegations made by the employees were not substantiated and could not therefore be the basis for any action against the Chief Executive Officer.

The Board also noted that the employees’ conduct was reprehensible as they did not have any right to demand for the removal of the Chief Executive Officer.

The Board further noted that the group of 8 employees had staged an illegal strike and that disciplinary action will be meted out in due course in accordance with the Conditions of Service and the Disciplinary Code. The following are some of the recommendations made by the Special Committee:

i. That all employees should be inducted on the Company’s Conditions of Service and the Disciplinary Code;

ii. That the Chief Executive Officer and the Executive Team should undergo a corporate governance training program.

Chambeshi Slams Nkana Players After Loss to Kansanshi

Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi has slammed his players in the wake of their 1-0 FAZ Super Division loss to Kansanshi Dynamos over the weekend.

This was Nkana’s fifth loss of the 2021/22 season.

Chambeshi said he was disappointed with his player’s attitude in the match.

“It is football but I am not impressed with the way the boys played today and the approach was not to our expectations,” Chambeshi said.

“Just from the word go I didn’t see the real Nkana players. The altitude was not Okay. Kansanshi played very well, scored and we couldn’t score and that is the scoreline we have lost,” Chambeshi said.

Nkana have ten points from eight matches played.

He added that the players introduced in the second half among them Ronald Kampamba didn’t add value to the team.

“I think even our substitution did not put more into the game. I think the whole team was not at their best,” Chambeshi said.

Shepolopolo and Malawi Battle in Womens AFCON Qualifier

Shepolopolo hope to advance to the final qualifying phase of the 2022 Womens AFCON on Tuesday as they host Malawi in the return leg of the first round at home in Lusaka.

Zambia are armed with an away goal ahead of the Malawi encounter at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

The two sides drew 1-1 in the first leg match played in Lilongwe last Thursday.

“I think as far as I am concerned the team is ready to meet Malawi,” said Zambia coach Bruce Mwape.

Mwape’s striker Rachael Kundananji said Shepolopolo wants to be clinical upfront.

“We are well prepared and we are ready for tomorrow to use every chance that we will have,” Kundananji said.

Malawi coach McNelbert Kazuwa is promising an improved display from the Scorchers.

“We are well prepared as a team and we expect to perform much better,” said Kazuwa.

Overall winners between Zambia and Malawi will face Namibia in the final qualifying round.

Discrimination against Learners living with HIV and on Antiretroviral Viral Therapy in schools on the Rise

The Network of Zambian People living with HIV (NZP+) has bemoaned the high levels of stigma and discrimination against learners living with HIV and on Antiretroviral Viral Therapy in schools.

Speaking during the Katete District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) NZP+ Coordinator Kelvin Bulaya said there was a lot of stigma and discrimination in schools against HIV positive learners.

Mr Bulaya cited a case where a pupil from Katiula area of the district stopped going to school because of the stigma and discrimination he received from other pupils.

“The young boy was discovered by his friends that he was taking ARVs and so he stopped going to school because his friends where laughing at him. However the boy was later helped and counseled and had resumed school,” he said.

Mr Bulaya emphasized on the need to sensitize school going children on the need not to stigmatize and discriminate against learners who are living with HIV.

He also indicated to the house that some adolescents living with HIV are failing to declare their statuses for fear of stigma from their sexual partners.

He said this was leading most of the adolescents to indulge in unprotected sex, even when they are aware about their status which posed a risk to themselves and to their partners.

Meanwhile, District Social Welfare Officer, Joyce Msoni called for collaborative efforts between her institution and the ZNP+ to ensure that adolescents found positive are linked to community agents under her institution that can offer help and counseling.

She said the community agents have been trained in case management and are aware of none disclosure of such matters and will be helpful at community level to offer the necessary counselling and help to the adolescents.

Government owes contractor K40 million for the Chama Matumbo road

The government has disclosed that it owes China Jiangxi, a contractor engaged to construct lot one of the stalled Chama Matumbo road in Muchinga Province K40 million for the unpaid completed certified works.

Muchinga Province Minister Henry Sikazwe was informed of the unpaid funds when he inspected the stalled Chama Matumbo road over the weekend.

Mr Sikazwe has since called for a meeting with the contractor and the road Consultant so as to find means of dismantling the arrears.

ZANIS reports that the Provincial minister was accompanied by Provincial Permanent Secretary Davison Mulenga, Road Development Agency (RDA ) Regional Manager Pandeki Chabala and other Provincial heads of departments.

The team also inspect the bridge across Lungwa River which is on the verge of collapse.

“Government attaches great importance to the road network and will ensure that works on the stalled Chama Matumbo road and the Chama Lundazi road resume as soon as possible, ” said Mr. Sikazwe.

Meanwhile, Chief Lundu of the Senga people of Chama district in Muchinga Province has pledged to work with the new dawn government in order to foster development in his area.

Chief Lundu said he will give full support to President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration to continue with the developmental agenda of the country.

The traditional leader said when Mr. Sikazwe paid a courtesy call on him at his palace, chiefs have the duty to collaborate with the government to ensure that development continues.

He also appealed for the completion of the Chama-Matumbo road.

“We will appreciate it if the issue of this stretch is addressed because it has been long overdue,” he added.

He stated that the Chama-Matumbo road is an economical route that will benefit this chiefdom when completed.
