CAF WRAP: Bruising Champions League Weekend For Zambian Stars

It was a bruising weekend for Zambians in first leg action away of the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League quarterfinals.

In Morocco on Friday, TP Mazembe of DR Congo were beaten 2-0 away by three-time champions Raja Casablanca in Casablanca.

Defenders Tandi Mwape and Kabaso Chongo played the full 90 minutes for the five-time champions from the DR Congo while midfielder Rainford Kalaba was substituted in the 70th minute.

In Cairo 24 hours later, 2016 winners Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa also lost by the same margin to record eight-time African champions Al Ahly.

But goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene was an unused substitute in the last eight tie.

The final leg deciders are scheduled for March 7.

The 2020 Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony for the Ngoni Speaking people

The 2020 Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony for the Ngoni Speaking people of Chipata in Eastern Province brought different kinds of people who came to witness the annual event.

The Theme for this year’s ceremony was “Preserving our culture for our heritage and environment”.

The guest of honor was Defense Minister Hon Davies Chama who was accompanied by Tourism and Arts Minister Hon Ronald Chitotela, Finance Minister Dr. Bwalya Ng’andu, Housing and Infrastructure Development Minister Hon Vincent Mwale, Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister Hon Lawrence Sichalwe among other senior dignitaries.

Former South Africa President Jacob Zuma’s two children also attended.

N’cwala Traditional Ceremony is held every year on the last Saturday of February by the Ngoni people of Chipata City in Eastern Province of Zambia.

It is a celebration of the first harvests of the year.

The ceremony takes place at Mutenguleni village in Chipata.

N’cwala Ceremony was revived in 1980 by Paramount Chief Mpezeni III. At the ceremony, the Ngoni people pay homage to their ancestral spirits, commemorating their victories during their tribal wars, during their migration from current day South Africa and praising their God for giving them fresh crops in the fields

The Nc’wala traditional ceremony sparks various activities which are centered around the ceremony including the Ungoni Exhibition which is presented by the Ministry of Tourism and Arts at Luangwa House and visits to the Nsingo Community Museum where people turn up in numbers to learn more about the History of the Ngoni people. The Museum has various Ngoni cultural items on display and has a lot of history about the migration of the Ngoni speaking people from present-day KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa to Chipata, Eastern Province – Zambia.

The government says it appreciates the important role that traditional ceremonies play in helping the country in preserving and sharing of traditions, customs and values that define Zambians as people.

Speaking during the 38th Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony for the Ngoni speaking people in Chipata City, Defense Minister Hon Davies Chama said this is an important day not only for the Ngoni people of Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia but also for the entire continent of Africa and the world at large.

Hon Chama said the government recognizes the institution of chieftaincy as an important player in national development.

“It is important to mention that since independence, Zambia has remained a beacon of peace at regional, continental and international levels. This peace we have enjoyed came through our collective responsibility as a people expressed in our national motto One Zambia, One Nation,” he said.

“This has further emphasized in our national values and principles enshrined in our constitution. These National values and principles are morality and ethics, patriotism, National unity, democracy, constitutionalism, human dignity, equity, social justice, equality, nondiscrimination, good governance, integrity and sustainable development.”

The Defense Minister also said government will not stop talking about the need to continue fighting early marriage, teenage pregnancies and gender based violence until social vices are completely curbed.

“Hundreds of our young children, especially the girl child, have their quality of life compromised because they are either married off early or fall pregnant at a tender age thereby preventing them from developing their full potential in life. Both the girl and boy child must be well protected and nurtured to help them realise their full potential,” he added.

And Tourism and Arts Minister Hon Ronald Chitotela says traditional ceremonies are key to the promotion of the tourism sector.

He said this in Chipata in an interview with journalists during the commemoration of Nc’wala Traditional Ceremony for the Ngoni speaking people at Mtenguleni Village.

Hon Chitotela said there is no doubt that traditional ceremonies also help people to live in harmony.

“I am very proud to be here and be with our Ngoni friends who have successfully hosted another colorful ceremony. I must mention that these ceremonies help us to live in harmony as people as well as helping us to promote oneness,” said the Tourism and Arts Minister.

He said his ministry appreciates the role traditional ceremonies play in preserving culture, norms and good values as well as passing this to the young generation.

Hon Chitotela further called on parents to ensure that they pass on the culture to young people saying this will help in preserving Zambia’s good culture.

He emphasized that Zambia has a rich culture and it is here to stay.

UTH targets to conduct 50 Open Heart surgeries this year

The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) targets to conduct 50 Open Heart surgeries this year.

UTH Director of Clinical Care and Diagnostics services Alex Makupe says the institution is aiming at improving the level of medical practice and care of patients.

Speaking to ZNBC News, Dr Makupe said Zambian surgeons have been conducting open-heart surgery on patients this week, with the technical support of a team from Japan.

He said going forward, the local medical teams at the hospital will be able to conduct the surgeries on their own.

Dr Makupe said the overall objective is to equip the UTH with enough expertise to conduct major operations, while the first level hospitals will deal with minor ones.

Zesco United Eye Third Place

Holders Zesco United have a chance to move into third place on the FAZ Super Division table when they host Power Dynamos in the Copperbelt derby at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Sunday.

Zesco and Power are meeting just two weeks after settling for a 2-2 draw in the delayed league match played at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

Fourth placed Zesco will displace Nkana from the third position, who are not in action this weekend, should they overcome Power.

Ahead of this 15h00 kick off encounter, Zesco sits on 39 points, four above ninth placed, Power Dynamos after playing 21 and 22 matches respectively.

Earlier at 13h00, Forest Rangers will tackle Lumwana Radiants at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium with the hope of reclaiming league leadership.

Forest were on Saturday displaced to second spot by Green Eagles, who beat Mufulira Wanderers 2-1 at home in Choma to move to 44 points.

Forest are now one point behind Eagles as they tackle 12th placed Lumwana.

Reluctant response to Keep Zambia Clean campaign by Lusaka residents saddens Mayor Sampa

Lusaka Miles Sampa has expressed concern with the reluctance by Lusaka residents in response to the Keep Zambia Clean ,Green and healthy Campaign.

Speaking during the Keep Zambia Clean Green and Health Campaign activities in Ng’ombe on Saturday, Mr Sampa observed that residents of Lusaka are not participating in the campaign and leaving the City Council to execute most of its activities.

“It is worrying to see people who are knowledgeable of hygiene practices not participate in activities that are good for them, “ he observed.

The Mayor partnered in the cleaning exercise today with the area Roma ward Councillor Chilando Chitangala who was also recently elected at LCC as the new Chairperson in Charge of the Health Committee.

The Mayor urged Councillor Chitangala to work closely with the LCC Director of Health Mr Edgar Mulwanda who was also present to ensure Freedom Way in town and the entire CBD is ever clean.

He also reminded them that the City has recorded zero cholera outbreak in the last 2 years and the trend should be maintained jealously to the end of 2020.

The City father further stated that Council is in the process of enacting by-laws that will compel people to clean their surroundings in order to prevent diseases in the communities.

“Come second week of March 2020, there will be laws that will give mandate to the Council to prosecute shop owners and residents who will not take part in cleaning their premise” he said.

He has however applauded the few residents that have come on board in the cleaning activities so far and further called on more Lusaka residents to come forth and partipate in making the City clean, green and healthy.

Government is creating an environment where all children can enjoy their rights

Minister of Youth, Sport and Child Development Hon. Emmanuel Mulenga says the government is creating an environment where all children can enjoy their rights, are safe from all forms of violence, empowered with knowledge and skills in order for them to become responsible citizens.

And the Minister says the government has developed the Children’s Code Bill to protect children from abuse and exploitation.

Speaking during the launch of the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting which falls tomorrow, 1 March 2020 in Lusaka today under the theme, “Free, Safe, Empowered and Responsible,” Hon. Mulenga said the day provides the platform on which various stakeholders involved in child development can hear opinions, perspectives and stories affecting the rights of children.

“This is the day when broadcasters all over the world dedicate airtime and programs to children. The children take over the airwaves to highlight their aspirations, dreams and fears on issues that concern them,” he said.

“The day is significant in that children and young people can share with the rest of the world the things that they want to achieve in life for them to grow into responsible citizens capable of contributing to national development,” Hon. Mulenga said.

He said government remains committed towards uplifting the lives of children in the country and emphasized how violence perpetrated on children and young people has long lasting effects as those affected find it difficult to cope with the life and often end up as perpetrators themselves.

Hon Mulenga said this is why violence against any person, more so children should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

He cautioned youths and children against being used as tools of political violence especially that the country is now approaching the 2021 general elections.

He appealed to all citizens to spare time and listen to the various programmes that will be presented by children on Television and Radio during the international Children’s day of Broadcasting which will be commemorated country wide.

Ziyo: Zanaco Not Scared of Pyramids Away Record

Zanaco captain Ziyo Tembo says they are ready for Sunday’s big test against Pyramids FC of Egypt in their 2019/2020 CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal, first leg match at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

Unbeaten Zanaco face probably their most formidable opponent so far in this seasons competition against continental debutants Pyramids.

Pyramids are unbeaten away with six successive wins since the start of this season’s CAF Confederation Cup last August.

The Egyptians have just one loss at home in the group stage in January when they lost 1-0 in Cairo to Enugu Rangers of Nigeria.

“Pressure is always there but it is how you handle it. We all know about Pyramids, they are good away where they have won six-out-of -six games,” Ziyo said.

“But we also haven’t lost at home and so that will make it a good encounter. I think what is most important is take the game to them with the right attitude and right commitment.”

Meanwhile, Zanaco are unbeaten both home and away with four wins and six draws from ten games since entering the competition the second round in September after enjoying a preliminary round bye.

This is Zanaco’s debut quarterfinal appearance in continental football from three group stage campaigns.

Green Eagles Perch at Number One

Green Eagles on Saturday rallied to beat Mighty Mufulira Wanderers 2-1 at home in Choma to go top of the FAZ Super Division table.

Angel Lubamba put Mighty ahead in the 16th minute to see the last placed side take a one-nil halftime lead.

But Liniker Mwikisa equalized on 64 minute and Ronald Chibwe scored the winner in the 76th minute.

Eagles are number one for at least 24 hours before Forest Rangers, whom they displaced to second spot, play Lumwana Radiants at home in Ndola on Sunday.

Eagles have 44 points from 23 games played and with one match in hand while Forest have 43 points heading into their date with 12th placed Lumwana.

Otherwise, there was little activity in the top five on Saturday but Red Arrows hopes of making inroads suffered a setback when they lost 2-0 at home by 8th placed Lusaka Dynamos.

Baba Basile put Arrows ahead in the 29th minute to join Arrows striker and top scorer James Chamanga on 14 goals before Aubrey Funga completed the job in the 71st minute.

The result sees Dynamos extend their unbeaten run to nine successive league games on 37 points, one behind Arrows who fall from sixth to number seven.

I’m aware that so much money has been spent in designing and constructing toll gates-Finance Minister

Finance Minister Bwalya Ng’andu says there has been a lag between the construction of road tolling facilities and the full realization of the impact they have on improving the roads.

Dr. Ng’andu said that he is aware that so much money has been spent in designing and constructing toll gates and that once the money is exhausted, it will pay off as what will be collected from toll fees is profits.

Dr. Ng’andu said that most of the money realized from toll fees will go towards maintaining roads countrywide, adding that it is obvious that once the government collects toll fees from road users, the government will have a duty to maintain roads.

Dr. Ng’andu said that road users should expect more and more roads to be worked on as a result of the toll fees being collected, noting that currently the amount of roads that need to be worked on is quite huge adding that road maintenance has been going on since 2013.

Dr. Ng’andu was speaking shortly after inspecting operations at the Chongwe Toll plazas with National Roads Funds Agency -NRFA- Chief Executive Officer WALLECE MUMBA in Chongwe.

And Mr.Mumba said NRFA has collected over K 4 billion in road tolling fees from 2013 to the end of 2019 and that as at the end of 2019, NRFA was running 24 inland toll collection points such as weighbridges and toll plazas.

Mr.Mumba said the agency also has an additional ten collection point at the borders making them 34 in total and said that NRFA has also introduced an electronic payment system which is expected to increase inland toll fee collection this year.

Mr.Mumba said over eight thousand cards have been distributed to motorists across the country as a way of promoting cashless transactions when collecting toll fees and that NRFA is this year opening up six more toll gates.

Mr.Mumba says the Chongwe toll station which started operating in 2017 collects about 86 thousand Kwacha per day and 2 point 6 million kwacha in toll fees.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ng’andu has called on engineers working on the Kacholola bridge which was damaged by rains to speed up works to put up a permanent bridge.

Dr. Ng’andu, who inspected the temporal bailey bridge praised Engineers for ensuring that traffic flow is restored on the portion where the bridge was damaged.

And Mr.Mumba briefed the Minister that NRFA releases K 5 Million Kwacha to the Road Development Agency (RDA) working with DMMU mobilized the bailey bridge and installed it on the damaged portion of the great east road in Eastern province.

He said any delays in doing so would have resulted in a complete cut off of Lusaka and eastern province.

Mr.Mumba further disclosed that permanent works on the bridge following the release of funding to RDA will start next week.

He said NRFA will require more funding to ensure that permanent bridges are constructed in areas where they are damaged.

Court orders the deportation of a 17-year-old boy back to Mozambique

Kapiri Mposhi Magistrate, Edward Banda has ordered for the deportation of a 17-year-old boy to Mozambique, his country of origin, for unlawfully entering and staying in Zambia.

ZANIS reports that the juvenile was in court charged with one count of unlawful presence in Zambia contrary to sections 11 (2) (3) and 56 (1) of the Immigration and Deportation Act number 18 of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offense are that the juvenile being a Mozambican national unlawfully entered in Zambia without a valid boarder pass and resident permit allowing him to stay or enter Zambia.

The minor who resides in Zumbo district, Mozambique, was arrested on February 14, 2020 in Kapiri Mposhi at Luanshimba check point by immigration officers who were checking immigration compliance aboard a bus from Lusaka to Kasumbalesa.

And the juvenile admitted the charge.

When the matter came up for ruling today, Assistant Social Welfare Officer, Kelvin Munyama, who is the probation officer, applied for absolute discharge of the juvenile and subsequent handover to the Zambian immigration for his safe repatriation to his country of origin, Mozambique.

In a social welfare report on the minor, Mr Munyama told the court that the juvenile though born to a Zambian father, who is since late, and a Mozambican mother had no right to enter or stay in Zambia without a valid boarder pass and resident permit respectively.

Mr Munyama identified the minor’s late father as Pakanati Tembo who stayed in Feira district and his mother as Agnes Jam Jialous who is currently staying in Timani-Moto area in Zumbo district of Mozambique.

He told the court that the juvenile was born in Mozambique and stays with his mother stating that he frequently crosses into Zambia to sell dried fish in Lusaka and Kasumbalesa.

Mr Munyama cited the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child (UN CRC) Part 1, Article 3 principle on the “Best interest of child” and recommended for the repatriation of the juvenile offender to his country of origin without any punishment.

Magistrate Banda granted the application ordering that the juvenile be handed over to the Mozambique Immigration for onward conveyance to his family.

Government U-turns on a Decision to Evict a Local Community from a Forest Reserve

The government has rescinded a decision to evict the community of Nadongo forest reserve in Moomba ward of Monze district in Southern Province.

Last year, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources issued an eviction order for people who encroached in the local forests, a decision which agitated communities as well as some traditional leaders.

During a community engagement meeting held at Nakalwindi community yesterday, Senior Headman Hakalembe said government’s decision to allow people to live in the forests and call for a collaborative forest management plan was commendable.

He said people who settled in Lusengezi, Nadongo and Nakabwe feel safe now that government has decided to allow them to remain in the forest and help in the preservation of the natural resources where they have lived for many years.

Senior Headman Hakalembe said the local community was ready to work with government in all efforts aimed at protecting and preserving the three forests, adding that the community was fully aware that this would help in countering effects of climate change.

“We are thrilled by government’s decision to allow us to live in the forests and help in the management of the natural resources so that it benefits us and the future generation.

“ We, therefore stand ready to work with government to ensure that the forests are protected to counter effects of climate change whose effects were inevitably visible during drought last farming season,” said Headman Hakalembe.

And Monze District Commissioner Cyprian Hamanyanga, expressed happiness that the local community was ready to work with government in its efforts to protect and preserve the natural resources not only in the district, but the country at large.

He said the positive response from the community to work with government was encouraging as this would help to ensure sustainable use of forests and prevent indiscriminate cutting or unauthorised use of the natural resources in the District.

“ As government am happy that you have shown willingness to support governments ‘efforts in ensuring that local forests are protected through this collaborative forests management plan which has been hatched by government.

“ I would like to encourage other communities to emulate this gesture so that together we can have a Green, and Healthy environment for now and generations to come, ’said Mr. Hamanyanga.

District Forestry Officer Andrew Kamwi noted that apart from forging a joint forests management plan with the community, government also intends to put up boundaries using the original old maps of 1967 and 1968.

He pointed out that the last time all the three forest boundaries were maintained was on August 16th, 1979.

He also explained that an agreement would soon be signed between the local community and government to legalise the joint forests management plan.

Local Villagers being unfairly punished by the Fishing ban as the guidelines are not clear

A Fisherman in Mufumbwe’s Kalombo ward has appealed to the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, and the Department of WildLife and National Parks to offer guidance on policy regulation regarding fishing activities on the Kabompo river.

Mr Gibson Mushala, made the appeal to officers in the two departments as were conducting their last patrol on the Kapombo river before government lifts the fish ban on March 1, 2020.

Mr Mushala explained that for many times he and several other people have been found right in the middle of the Kabompo river and have been apprehended by officers from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks on claims that they were on the side of the Park.

He said the unfortunate part is that when they go to get a license from the department of fisheries, the document does not state that when a fisherman crosses the middle of the river to the side of the West Lunga National Park, then that person is in a restricted area.

Meanwhile, Mr Mushala has revealed to the officers that the local people at Mushala and surrounding villages have been law-abiding citizens as regards the observance of the 2019-2020 fish ban exercise.

He said right from the 1st of December, 2019, the local people had shifted their attention from the Kabompo river to their fields for farming activities while others have been picking mushrooms for extra income into their homes.

Reacting to the sentiments from Mr Mushala, leader for the combined patrol team, Japhet Chiyesu advised the local people to ensure that they take some time to visit the Department of Wildlife and National Parks after getting the fishing license from his office so that they may be guided on restricted areas.

Mr Chiyesu said his team has, however, noted the concerns from the local people and promised to follow up the matter with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.

He further commended the local people for their observance of the fish ban programme and encouraged them to continue reminding each other on the need to observe the fish ban programme and the benefits thereof.

The government of Zambia every year enforces the fish ban programme in most water bodies around the country to allow various fish species to breed thereby preserving their existence.

Mufumbwe is one of the districts in North-western province which is blessed with a number of water bodies such as the Kabompo, Musonweji, Mufumbwe and Lalafuta rivers.

Improved Grade 12 Results attributed to the Connection of Schools to the Power Grid

Milenge District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Denis Mukunta has attributed the improved academic performance at Milenge Secondary School to the connection of the learning institution to the power grid.

Mr Mukunta said that learners now have more time to study since the school was connected to electricity in January last year, adding that the quality of education at the school has improved as teachers are now able to conduct practical lessons that require electricity.

Mr Mukunta expressed happiness with the improved academic performance among grade twelves during the 2019 examinations.

Mr Mukunta said the district has generally recorded an improvement at the five examination centers for grade 12.

ZANIS reports that Mr Mukunta said Mulumbi Secondary School was the highest in the district with 88.4 per cent pass rate while Kafwanka was the lowest with 41.58 per cent.

He said the performance has improved compared to the 2018 examination year adding that the overall pass rate of the district is 63 percent.

Mr Mukunta added that government is working towards making the learning environment more conducive by constructing laboratories in schools which do not have those facilities as well as improving the sanitary conditions.

He noted that poor sanitary conditions in schools leads to absenteeism among the girl child when they are having their menses which in turn affects their academic performance.
