The Zambia National Farmers’ Union ha thank President Edgar Lungu, for his intervention to suspend the proposed Zesco Tariffs increments.

ZNFU President Jarvis Zimba said the Head of State’s decision is timely.

Mr Zimba said Farmers were extremely concerned with the proposed tariff increments as this could have resulted into added costs of production, and especially the cost of producing irrigated crops such as cabbages, tomatoes, rape and wheat, among others.

He said the increase in tariffs was going to have a knock-on effect on all major inputs and commodities and in turn lead to some farmers failing to produce and running out of business.

“As ZNFU, we are very grateful that after the meeting held during the Field Day in Choma/Kalomo on 2nd May 2019 where farmers complained over the issue of pending Zesco Tariff increments, Mr. President you listened to our cry and took a fatherly and decisive position on the matter,” Mr Zimba said.

“We shall remain open for consultation as we together strive to grow our agriculture and economy. On behalf of all farmers in the country, we once again say, thank you Mr. President.”

Today’s Message: Created for Greatness

1

Today’s Scripture

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
(Ephesians 2:10, NIV)

Created for Greatness

It’s easy to go through life thinking that we’re average; we’re ordinary. “There’s nothing special about me. I’m just one of the six billion people on earth.” No, when God created you in His image, He put a part of Himself in you. You could say that you have the DNA of Almighty God. You are destined to do great things, destined to leave your mark on this generation. The truth is, there is nothing average about you; but too many times, we don’t realize who we are. We focus on our weaknesses or what we don’t have. We focus on the mistakes we’ve made or the family from which we’ve come. We end up settling for mediocrity when we were created for greatness!

If you’re going to break out of average, you need to remind yourself every day, “I have the DNA of the Most High God. Greatness is in my genes. I come from a bloodline of champions.” If you’ll have the attitude of a champion, you’ll live the life of a champion and boldly embrace the blessings He has in store for you!

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for preparing me to do the good works You have prepared. I am not average. I am not ordinary. I am created for greatness, and I belong to Almighty God. Thank You for Your faithfulness in Jesus’ name! Amen.”

Making use of natural resources:Zambia should start selling ivory instead of destroying it

22

WE CAN DO IT
By Percy Mwale
Zambia is endowed with immense natural resources that if harnessed, can push us out of poverty. Some of these resources are largely prohibited and face restrictive trading conditions. The question then is why? It’s because the Capitalist and Imperialist nations know that Zambia will experience Economic Emancipation once she uitilises these God-given resources.
In as much as we may argue for or against, the fact still remains that ZAMBIA MUST PROSPER because Jehovah God has blessed us exceedingly and abundantly. He has given us very favorable climatic conditions and plenty of arable land to ensure that these natural resources thrive.
1. Let our government realise that the ivory and elephant tusks that they destroy after confiscating from poachers is unrealistic. Why not sell because they fetch a lot of money on the international market? We must find a way to grow elephant numbers and protect them to ensure that this is not abused by selfish individuals.
2. The Mukula tree grows well on our land. Why can’t Zaffico a State Owned Enterprise (SOE), grow it on a large scale and export it? Or even help the local industry use it in the wood industry and maximise on returns  and job creation? Why can’t the government allow private commercial farmers to also grow it?
3. What is the major occupation of ZNS apart from being a big drain on the wage bill without much to show? Let the government, through Zambia National Service, Zambia Army and Zambia Correctional Service grow marijuana and export it. The same developed countries that have brain-washed us into banning this ‘green gold’ are busy legalising it for consumption because it has over 200 chemicals and unmatched medicinal properties.
We’ve been misled so let’s open our eyes and reflect seriously.
We shall have no other opportunity to develop Zambia if we don’t change our mindsets and ignore the oppressive West. They don’t want us to develop so that we continue begging from them and be their slaves.
Thanks!

President Lungu directs Minister of Energy to Defer ZESCO Tariffs Review

Minister of Energy Mathew Nkhuwa
Minister of Energy Mathew Nkhuwa

President Edgar Lungu has directed the Ministry of Energy to defer the Tariff review application made by power utility company ZESCO to the Energy Regulations Board.

Energy Minister Mathew Nkhuwa announced the development and said the President consulted widely on the application.

Mr. Nkhuwa said after consultations, President Lungu has listened to the concerns raised by various stakeholders and members of the public.

The Energy Minister has since advised that all concerned institutions should accordingly suspend the tariff review process with immediate effect.

He said Zambians have voiced out their concerns on the proposed application for the tariff review by ZESCO and its implications on the general cost of doing business.

On 9th March 2019, ZESCO applied to the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to revise retail electricity tariffs upwards.

Among the proposals include the downward adjustment of the lifeline tariff from 200kwh to 100kwh and elimination of the monthly fixed charge for residential and commercial customers.

ZESCO was basing proposed adjustments of tariffs on prevailing economic conditions such as the rise in the prices of goods and services and fluctuation of the Kwacha against the dollar that they say has contributed to increased operating costs.

ZESCO’s equipment and supplies are procured in foreign currency, therefore, weakening of the Kwacha against the dollar is making procurements expensive for the Parastatal.

Bruised Zanaco host unbeaten Kabwe Warriors

0

Zanaco defender Taonga Bwembya believes they can avenge their first leg loss against unbeaten Kabwe Warriors today and also redeem themselves for last Saturday’s away defeat at Nakambala Leopards.

The Pool A leaders hosts fifth placed Warriors who were first team to beat them in the 2019 by 3-2 on March 2 in a match Zanaco where leading 2-1 just before the hour-mark but later had striker Rodger Kola sent-off to spark Warriors comeback.

“They are very beatable and it was evident in the way we played them when we are eleven- against-eleven in Kabwe where we scored two quick goals but we were left to defend when we lost one player,” Bwembya said.

But Zanaco again come into this afternoons fixture seven days after they lost 4-2 away at seventh placed Nakambala Leopards.

“The preparations have been OK we have been working on our mistakes in training. They have also been some changes in the defence and I am sure we are capable of keeping clean sheet,” Bwembya said.

Zanaco know nothing but a win will do this afternoon with defending champions Zesco United hot on their heels at number two on 26 and 24 points respectively with three games to go after this afternoons Week 15 fixtures.

Zesco have a fairly easier job away in Kabwe where they date relegation-threatened new boys Prison Leopards.

Nkana face nemesis Eagles

0

Beston Chambeshi says they are looking forward to this afternoon’s crucial FAZ Super Division Pool B away clash against Green Eagles despite the recent history that exists between the two sides.

The match comes a fortnight after Pool B leaders Eagles beat Nkana 4-1 away in a rescheduled Week Six match in Kitwe.

But that loss left Nkana with a bitter taste after they witnessed two goals controversially disallowed for offside.

“That was not a true reflection of the game but they picked three points, well and good for Eagles but we have to play the return game and we are looking forward to this game,” Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi said.

But Nkana are unbeaten since that loss on April 24 and head to Eagles after beating FC MUZA 2-1 and a 2-2 away draw against Nkwazi.

However, seventh positioned Nkana remain twelve points off the pace with 16 points from eleven matches with three games in hand in what is now a frantic race by the 2018 runners-up to finish in the top two.

Meanwhile, Nkana are yet to win away in Choma where they have only collected five draws since Eagles made their topflight debut in 2008.

In addition to that, Nkana must not lose at Eagles with because they have another big top three opponent to face at home this Wednesday when they host third placed Buildcon who were on 24 points ahead of Saturday’s home date in Ndola against number two side Nkwazi who have 25 points.

Engage in issue based reporting and not character assassination, media prodded

Livingstone Deputy Mayor Grandwell Chibamba
Livingstone Deputy Mayor Grandwell Chibamba

Livingstone Deputy Mayor Grandwell Chibamba has challenged journalists to engage in issue-based reporting to highlight what affects ordinary citizens, as opposed to character assassination of political players during elections.

Mr. Chibamba said it was saddening for scribes to focus on reporting personalities of candidates while suppressing the real issues that affect citizens.

He noted that a free press was needed if citizens were expected to make informed decisions during elections.

“But while the media must be free and able to form independent and diverse views, it must be reliable, truthful and trusted,” he said.

Mr. Chibamba said this in Livingstone yesterday during commemoration of World Press Freedom Day held under the theme, “Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation.”

And the deputy mayor further said elections were a cornerstone of democracy and journalists had a vital role to play in deepening it.

Mr. Chibamba said journalists had power and influence over various actors in the electoral process as they were strategically placed to reach a lot of people through the media.

“No single person or politician would reach the huge masses of people without the media. Elections and campaigns would not be possible without the media,” he said.

And Livingstone Press Club (LPC) Acting President Kelvin Mudenda called for self-regulation of the media as the country had adequate laws to regulate the conduct of the sector in general and journalists in particular.

Mr. Mudenda said the media in Zambia was better placed to regulate itself just as the case was in many other countries.

“Zambia already has enough laws which regulate the conduct of the media and journalists, hence we are totally opposed to statutory regulation,” he said.

Mr. Mudenda further said the Club was committed to promoting media freedom and freedom of expression in the country.

He was also hopeful that government would publicize the contents of the much awaited Access To Information (ATI) Bill before it was taken to parliament to enable journalists and the public give their input.

Earlier, Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) Livingstone District Chairperson Nyambe Mutete observed that recent by-elections held in the country had pockets of violence which resulted in use of vulgar language by members of some participating political parties.

Mr. Muteta called for strict measures to be put in place to strengthen conflict management committees to prevent similar incidents from reoccurring.

The permanent secretary said this during the commemoration of the World Press Freedom at East Park in Lusaka which was held under the theme “Media for Democracy, Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation.

He also clarified that government has no intentions to regulate the media but the media should regulate themselves through a mechanism established by themselves and backed by law.

Speaking during the same event chairperson for World Press Freedom Day Local Organizing Committee, Enock Ngoma pointed out that the media has great potential to contribute to a culture of sustainable peace and democracy to the nation.

He indicated that tremendous progress has been made in efforts for the media to come up with self-regulatory framework that will cover the electronic and print media.

Mr Ngoma commended the media fraternity for coming together to celebrate this important day.

President Edgar Lungu with I.G Kakoma Kanganja at KK international airport upon his return from South Africa

President Edgar Lungu has directed the Police to immediately arrest suspected PF cadres who attacked journalists at Power FM in Kabwe and Radio Maria in Chipata Eastern Province.

Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda said that President Edgar Lungu is disappointed with the silence by the police and failing to take action on the people that attacked Power FM and Radio Maria in Central and Eastern provinces respectively.

Speaking at media briefing at State House in Lusaka yesterday, Mr. Chanda said President Lungu is a strong advocate of media and press freedom and that anyone found bleaching the law should be brought to book and allow the due process of the law to take its course.

Mr Chanda said that President Lungu noted with disappointment that the barbaric acts are a complete departure from the principles and values of the Patriotic Front and government in general.

He explained that what happened to the two radio stations is a clear violation of the freedom of the media and harassment of journalists which should not be allowed.

Mr. Chanda disclosed that to this effect the head of state is wondering to who is preventing the police and why they cannot act to prevent such criminal activities and wondered why the Inspector General of Police has to wait for instructions from State House to correct a wrong committed in the name of the PF.

” The President is disappointed with failure by the Police to act on visible breaches of the law by some members of the Public including patriotic Front cadres,” Mr Chanda said.

He said Police are expected to act and must be seen to be doing their duty whenever the law if breached by anyone regardless of the political affiliation.

The President observed with disappointment that the acts of violence are being committed in the name of the Patriotic Front without the Police acting even when cadres take the law in their own hands and described the recent attacks on media houses by suspected Patriotic Front cadres as an unacceptable and disappointing ,and has called on the police to arrest the perpetrators of the violence.

Recently same suspected PF cadres stormed Power FM and radio Maria and disrupted proceedings of interviews.
