It’s been almost 15 years to the day since Beyoncé met Nelson Mandela while performing at his foundation’s “Give 1 Minute To AIDS” concert in late 2003. But on Tuesday, the megastar published a poignant letter to the late humanitarian icon, also fondly known as “Madiba,” recalling their time together and Mandela’s incredible and enduring legacy, which she, husband Jay-Z, and others, including Pharrell, Femi Kuti, and Usher, will continue in his memory during this weekend’s Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

As the title of the festival suggests, this year also marked the 100th birthday of the freedom fighter and former South African president, who died in December of 2013. In addition to the concert, a series of initiatives have been made in Mandela’s memory, with the aim of raising $1 billion in aid to the world’s most impoverished citizens, with 50 percent committed to aiding women and girls.

As Beyoncé expresses in her letter, the mission Mandela inspired has since become a personal one:

Dear Madiba,

I first met you in 2004 for the 46664 AIDS Benefit Concert in Cape Town, and the impact you have had on my life resonates with me today and every day. Your kindness and gratitude for every experience, and your ability to forgive are lessons I have learned and will pass on to my three children. My entire family holds you in high regard.

It is an honor for me to travel to South Africa this week in celebration of you and your efforts to right so many wrongs. You were a strategic warrior, a bold activist, and charismatic and well-loved leader. Your vision for dignity, for human rights, for peace and a South Africa free of racism and apartheid, allows us all to turn dreams into reality.

I remember taking that walk with you back to the prison on Robben Island where you spent 18 of those imprisoned 27 years. I recall your measured but focused steps in as you recounted the stories of the struggles, the sacrifices and your resilience. You smiled as you talked to a crowd of artists and their guests, including my mother, who first told my sister and me about the great Nelson Mandela. In that moment I truly understood your heart and humility.

You made it possible for so many people like me to reject impossibilities and understand our capabilities in making lasting change in the world. The smallest efforts could change the trajectory for so many living in extreme poverty, facing injustices, the indecency of racism and fighting for their rights as humans.

As we celebrate the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, honoring your centennial year, I promise you that we have made your dreams our own.

Your work and your sacrifices were not in vain. I will cherish every moment shared in your presence and use the lessons learned from you as fuel to stir positive ideas and solutions.

Senior Chief Nkula of the Bemba speaking people and Chief Kabanda of the Bisa people have told the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) officials who were in the province for a survey that they are ready to partner with government in order to foster development in their respective Chiefdoms.

Senior Chief Nkula said his Chiefdom has enough arable land ready to be surrendered for agricultural production. The traditional leader said any investor willing to invest in agricultural production in Nkula Chiefdom is welcome as the area has enough land with no settlements.

He said he is encouraging people to invest in the agricultural production so as to boost food production and contribute positively to the economic growth of the province and ultimately, the entire country. Senior Chief Nkula further said the call by President Edgar Lungu to diversify the economy through increased agricultural production should be supported as it will go a long way in improving the country’s economy as well as boost the national food security.

And Chief Kabanda said his Chiefdom has potential for investment in various sectors. Speaking through his representative Arnold Chengo, Chief Kabanda said his Chiefdom has a lot of mineral deposits and has potential for hydro power generation.

Chief Kabanda added that his area has arable land for agricultural production with enough rivers and streams. The traditional leader said any investor willing to invest in Kabanda Chiefdom in various sectors of the economy is welcome as land is readily available. IDC team led by the Technical Specialist Shyan Vora where in Muchinga Province on a survey to check on the Investment potential of the province.

Meanwhile, Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary, Jobbicks Kalumba and the IDC Team commended Senior Chief Nkula and Chief Kabanda for their willingness to release land to would -be investors.

Dr. Kalumba said it is the desire of the provincial administration to improve agricultural production in the area taking advantage of the good soils and favourable climatic conditions.

The survey embarked on by the IDC follows a successful stakeholders meeting held at Kapasa Makasa University in Chinsali in July this year that resolved to make Muchinga a fruit and forest hub.

State House has clarified that President Edgar Lungu did not sneak out of the country as insinuated by National Democratic Congress Consultant Chishimba Kambwili.

Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda has disclosed that the President has gone on a short vacation in the Luangwa Valley in Eastern Province and not in South Africa.

Mr. Chanda said the President will only return after he takes a short break adding that his vacation was not revealed to the nation in order to keep people away from him.

Speaking when he featured on the Breakfast show on Hot FM this morning, Mr. Chanda said the purpose of keeping President Lungu from State House was to reduce the amount of work going to him.

And on the relationship between the Head of State and Businessman Valden Findlay, Mr. Chanda said the duo have a personal relationship that does not cost anything.

He said Mr. Findlay has never been on any foreign trip on Presidential delegation further describing Mr. Kambwili’s allegations that Mr. Findlay has always been with the President as unfounded.

“If Mr. Findlay wants to travel, he has a bigger plane than the Presidential challenger and if he wants to visit the President as a friend he is free to do so, those allegations are unfounded. He is not a convicted criminal, he returned from England recently and is one of the businessmen funding the PF”, he said.

NDC Consultant Chishimba Kambwili who is also PF Roan PF Member of Parliament charged at a media briefing earlier this week that President Lungu had sneaked out of the country for South Africa without the government telling the nation his whereabouts.

Teacher apprehended for defilement

Police in Nyimba district in Eastern Province have arrested a Primary School Teacher for allegedly defiling a 14 year old girl. The suspect identified as Chirwa, 36, of Moombe Primary School allegedly had canal knowledge with a girl on November 21, 2018.

It is alleged that Chirwa had canal knowledge with the minor in his car while, it was parked just along Great East Road near a named village.Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, Amon Lungu, uncle to the victim narrated that he caught Chirwa red handed with his niece.

“I was coming from Nyimba Town to purchase groceries for my shop when I saw a car packed off the Great East Road. Upon reaching home and enquiring on the whereabouts of my niece, my sister informed me that she had been picked up by her former school teacher,” he narrated.Mr Lungu added that the description his sister gave of the car matched that of the one he saw parked off the road.

Mr Lungu disclosed that when he went back to check on the car he found parked, he saw Chirwa having canal knowledge with his niece. He stated that when he attempted to open the door of the vehicle, Chirwa immediately locked it and jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off. Mr Lungu explained that when he got home, Chirwa had already dropped off the girl.

“I interviewed my niece and she told me that they had sexual intercourse and the teacher told her to say he only gave her a lift from Chipembe a nearby village where she had gone to play,” he said.Mr Lungu said he immediately reported the incident to the police and took the child for medical checkups where she was examined.

Meanwhile, One Stop Center District Coordinator, Mubita Daka, said it is unfortunate that a second similar case has been recorded in the district where, a teacher has defiled a pupil. Mrs Daka said it is embarrassing and frustrating to have teachers as perpetrators when they should be role models.

A docket of the case has since been opened and the suspect has been arrested and detained in police custody and will appear in court soon.

HH demands Kambwili’s immediate release

Opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has demanded for the immediate release of the NDC Consultant Dr. Chishimba Kambwili from police custody.

Police in Luanshya on Thursday detained Roan PF member of parliament Chishimba Kambwili after charging him with unlawful assembly.

But Mr Hichilema says Dr Kambwili should be released immediately.

“As a country, we do not need to treat each other like this especially in the midst of the dialogue process in the country,” Mr Hichilema said.

“As far as we are concerned, Dr. Kambwili did not refuse to answer the police callout in Luanshya. All he did was to merely request for a date next week so he could attend to court matters in Lusaka tomorrow.”

Mr Hichilema said there was no need to bundle him like an armed bandit and drive him to Luanshya police.

Police detained Dr Kambwili over night after charging him with unlawful assembly.

This is in relation to the alleged illegal meeting which he held with aggrieved AVIC employees who marched to his house in Luanshya to complain about their conditions of service.

On Wednesday, Dr. Kambwili’s lawyers wrote to Luanshya police asking them to defer their clients appearance to December 10, saying the NDC consultant had a matter to attend to before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

But Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga insisted that Kambwili presents himself on Thursday warning that staying away would be at his own peril.

Instead of presenting himself to Luanshya police, however, Dr. Kambwili decided to go to Police Force Headquarters, Thursday, to launch a complaint against Katanga, saying she was being unreasonable.

Before he could lodge his complaint, however, Deputy Inspector General of Police Eugene Sibote ordered his officers to arrest Dr. Kambwili and ferry him to Luanshya.

Dr. Sibote later told journalists at a media briefing later that, “I wish to inform you and through you, of course the nation that the Police in Luanshya issued a police callout for Honourable Chishimba Kambwili to appear today and himself decided to come to Police Headquarters trying to seek refuge or for whatever reasons known best to him. Now what I wish to state is that if any person commits a crime and avails himself or herself to the police other than where he or she is required to appear, such a person can be apprehended by Police and conveyed to the Police Station where he or she is required or alleged to have committed the crime, so that they can answer to the allegations against them. To this effect I want to confirm that we have apprehended and conveyed Honourable Chishimba Kambwili to Luanshya Police Station where he has been asked to go and answer to certain charges by Police on the Copperbelt.”

He said police officers were duty bound to apprehend suspects, no matter the jurisdiction in which the crime was committed.

“You must all understand that this is done on the fact that the Zambia Police is one. When a person commits or is alleged to have committed an offence, in any part of Zambia, all Police officers are duty bound. They are obliged to ensure that such a person if seen is apprehended and taken to where he is alleged to have committed an offence. This is because of the issues of jurisdiction. If a person commits an offence in area ‘A’ and we find him in area ‘Z’, we shall convey him to area A where he is alleged to have committed an offence…I just saw him come in and then he told me that he was supposed to be in Luanshya but I’m not going there. Now what do you expect me as a police officer to do? I will convey him to where he is supposed to be,” said Sibote.

Dr. Kambwili arrived at Luanshya police at 14:06 hours where he was immediately taken to the reception to wait for his lawyers.

Later, Dr. Kambwili demanded to get his medication.

Meanwhile, his son Mwamba and NDC Secretary General Mwenye Musenge and Journalists were blocked from entering the police station.

NDC leader Chishimba Kambwili arrested and Charged for unlawful assembly

42

Police in Luanshya have formally arrested and charged NDC leader Chishimba Kambwili for unlawful assembly.

And police have denied Dr Kambwili police bond saying only as senior civil servant must sign for him.

Dr Kambwili’s lawyer Evaristo Mukonka said the NDC leader will appear in the Luanshya magistrates Court today.

Police have denied the NDC 2021 Presidential candidate police bond despite meeting all the necessary legal requirements.

Dr Kambwili was nabbed at police Headquarters in Lusaka yesterday.

This was when the later went to make a formal complaint on the unprofessional conduct of Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga.

The NDC leader was driven to Lusaka by a convoy of heavily armed police officers.

He was later questioned for over two hours at Luanshya Central police before formally being arrested.

The arrest of the NDC leader means he will have to skip court in another case tomorrow.

The Luanshya lawmaker is supposed to appear before Magistrate Mwaka Mikalile.

Dr Kambwili’s legal team had yesterday written to the Inspector General of Police requesting police to defer the questioning of Dr Kambwili to next week.

This was to allow the NDC leader time to have a pre trial session with his legal team.

The arrest of the NDC leader comes a few days after he met protesting Avic workers in Luanshya.

The annoyed workers protesting over unfavourable working conditions initially went to Dr Kambwili’s Luanshya residence to express their misgivings over appalling working conditions.

The NDC National leadership is in this regard urging all party functionaries on the copper belt to turn out in numbers and give solidarity to their leader as he appears in court tomorrow.

This is according to a media statement made available by NDC acting Spokesperson Misheck Moyo

Earlier, Dr Kambwili had said that hhe was not going appear before the police in Luanshya for questioning. Mr. Kambwili said that he was scheduled to appear before Lusaka magistrate Mwaka Mikalile on Thursday the same day he is supposed to appear before the police .

Mr. Kambwili had proposed that he appears before the police on Monday next week.

This is contained in a letter dated of November 28, addressed to the District Criminal Investigation officer.

The letter in question has been written by Mr. Kambwili’s lawyers.

But Copperbelt province police commissioner Charity Katanga said she was not aware of Mr. Kambwili’s letter.

Minister of National Development Planning Honourable Alexander Chiteme, MP, has called for preservation of natural resources to maximise the value and benefits from them.

Mr. Chiteme was delivering a keynote speech at the World Bank’s eighth Wealth Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystems Services (WAVES) Annual Partnership Meeting in Paris, France on Wednesday.

Mr. Chiteme thanked the World Bank for initiating the WAVES Programme, which will enable countries account for their natural resources.

“We joined the WAVES programme voluntarily and we are making a lot of progress. We are now learning how to appreciate our natural resources,” Mr. Chiteme said. “Zambia is a low-income country, but we have a lot of land, a lot of forests, water, and a lot of other natural resources, and biodiversity. Our question has always been: how are we going to harness our resources? How are we going to put our figure to our resources? Fortunately, the World Bank Started this programme, which is helping us answer these questions and move forward.”

The Minister regretted that Zambia has been a mono economy, depending on copper, for a long time despite having numerous resources.

“We are a copper producing country and it’s the only resource that has been predominantly supporting our export earnings. I, therefore, want to thank the World Bank for this initiative; when we joined we said we want to account for our natural resources,” said Mr. Chiteme.

WAVES Global Partnership brings together WAVES partners from developed and developing countries, high-level government officials, United Nations agencies, academics, and experts from think tanks and non-governmental organizations at its Annual Partnership Meeting (APM).

Chambeshi tells Nkana to stay focused after beating Songo

3

Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi has warned his charges to stay focused despite Wednesday’s away win advantage in their 2018/2019 CAF Champions League tie against UD Songo of Mozambique.

Nkana made a bright start to their CAF Champions League campaign following a 2-1 away victory over Songo in Beira.

“I salute my boys, it was a very tough game, and they played well. We could have killed the game in the first half,” Chambeshi said.

“But we still have another half to play this is just the first half.”

Midfielder Harrison Chisala and striker Festus Mbewe scored in the 34th and 81st minutes respectively to hand Nkana the vital first leg victory.

But Sunday Awasa cut Nkana’s advantage in stoppage time to put them in with a chance in the final leg on December 4 at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

Meanwhile, Nkana will be without Kenyan international midfielder Duncan Otieno who was sent-off for a second bookable offence in the 88th minute.

Zambia has continued to rank as one of the lowest in the mathematics and science assessment performance

Ministry of General Education Permanent Secretary Dr. Felix Phiri with Ministry of General Education Officials pose for photo with Pupils at Kacheta Primary School

Government has expressed concern that Zambia has continued to rank as one of the lowest in the mathematics and science assessment performance report in Southern Africa.

And Ministry of General Education Permanent Secretary Felix Phiri has attributed the poor performance of Zambia in the category to lack of interest by teachers to apply strategic and conceptual teaching methodologies in their lesson plans.

Dr. Phiri stated that there is need for teachers in the country to be creative and embrace pedagogy which is the term refers to how teachers and students relate together as well as the instructional approaches implemented in the classroom.

He said this in a speech read for him in Lusaka today, by MoGE Director of Planning Louis Mwansa during the official opening of a two day National Conference on Pedagogy.

He explained that the Ministry has also adopted a framework to support in-services teachers with more knowledge and skills for them to apply conceptual methods in their teaching for improved learner performance as underlined in the national policy document.

Dr Phiri further added that government is interested in seen improved provision and increased access to education for all the citizens in the country.

And United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director for Southern Africa Carolyn Medel-Anonuvo said the quality and effectiveness of any education system depends on teachers.

Ms. Medel-Anonuvo noted that this is because qualified and competent teachers are a single most resource and determinant in meeting education success goals.

She explained that when teachers use their knowledge of both the subject and the way pupils understand the subject, their knowledge of the subject matter has more direct effect on pupils learning environment.

Ms. Medel-Anonuvo has since pledged UNESCO’ continued support to the improved education services delivery in Zambia.

Government should review Levieve’s partnership at Gemcanton mine

28

The continued diamond smuggling investigation of the Israeli-Russian Diamond Baron Lev Leviev by the Israeli authorities should make the Government of the Republic of Zambia also institute serious investigation and review his investment at Gemcanton emerald mine formerly Grizzly Mining Ltd on the copperbelt.

Mr El Nefussy a representative of Levi Levieve was deported by the Government of the Republic of Zambia in 2017 for purportedly engaging in serious human rights abuses at Gemcanton mine. Unfortunately, no serious arrests were made to make him unwearable to the law for subjecting the poor Zambians to inhuman torture at Gemcanton before a deportation decision could be arrived at. Government opted to deport him, and that decision has not set any disciplinary precedence to would be offenders.

To date, the issue of torture and human rights abuses at Gemcanton by Levi Levieve’s team has not been adequately addressed.

Many of the victims complain that government has not punished the offenders and feel such a precedence would escalate related acts in future. Zambia is among the African countries where the world diamond baron Leviev has massively invested in emerald mining with very little corporate social responsibility (CSO) going to the poor people of Chief Nkana and Lumpuma area where the emerald mine sits as was the case when the investment was wholly owned by Abdoulaye Ndyaye.

Apart from a lack of CSR, Zambia has been a victim of dishonest by many of the foreign investors who come in and ignore the plight of the local people.
The question of Zambians benefiting from some of the investors coming in the country is becoming a thorny one, as locals seem not to benefit. Whether or not some investors are worth hosting in Zambia has become a National debate. People are wondering whether some companies are genuinely investors or coming in to exploit the country’s resources.

Very serious government’s like Israel have investigated some diamond tycoons like Leviev with very little to leave unturned. The Zambian government , like Israeli government should consider thoroughly investigating Levi Levieve’s investment in Zambia.

What is worrying is a lack CSR at Gemcanton from the time Leveiev came on board as a share holder yet the company is making millions of dollars.
Additionally, the restrictions of the local people to the Gemcanton dumpsite has adversely affected the poor Zambians who were known to survive on such dumpsites at the time Gemcanton was called Grizzly Mines under Abdalaye Ndyaye .

It is the local people’s considered view that the speed at which government has let go of the black mountain in Kitwe for the benefits of the local people is the same speed at which government should influence Gemcanton mines management to allow the local people who are currently receiving nothing from Gemcanton under Leviev .

When Honorable Bowman Lusambo was Copperbelt Minister, Gemcanton was restrained and started making headways towards restoring CSR, but upon his transfer to Lusaka, many of the strides made at Gemcanton were buried to the disadvantage of the locals.

There is fear that if government does review Leviev’s investments at Gemcanton, the people of Zambia will benefit nothing from the emerald mine investment.

While government is seriously looking at the empowerment of the local people in mining industries , it is the people’s considered view that the shares of Leviev at Gemcanton are reviewed to benefit the lower people .

Lack of regard for the local people in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility and unfair trading habits have made different stakeholders wonder whether there is serious scrutiny of some foreign investors’ investment record before they can be allowed to invest in Zambia by the powers that be.

ZCCM-IH told to increase its shares in all mines in Zambia

The Mine Workers Union of Zambia – MUZ- has called on the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Investment Holdings ZCCM IH to increase its stake in all mines in Zambia if the country is to benefit from its mineral resources.

MUZ President Joseph Chewe says the current percent of ZCCM-IH shares in major mines is too small, that is why foreign firms are firing workers and paying them low wages.

Speaking at a public discussion forum organised by the Economics Association of Zambia -EAZ- in Kitwe last night, Mr Chewe also urged government to reject any move by the mines to retrench workers based on the proposed increase of mineral royalties in the 2019 National Budget.

Earlier, Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe praised the Economics Association of Zambia for being a partner to government in economic development.

The Copperbelt Permanent Secretary added that government is doing a lot to develop the country and it is just in order for associations to give credit where it is due.

And Ministry of Mines Director of Mine Safety Gideon Ndalama revealed that Zambia has not yet reached its full potential in terms of mapping the minerals the country has.

Mr Ndalama revealed that so far, only 62 percent of the geology of the country has been mapped and there are many other minerals which they country may discover in future.
