Democratic Republic of Congo(DCR) Joseph Kabila at the SADC Summit
Democratic Republic of Congo(DCR) Joseph Kabila has bid farewell to the Southern African Development Community(SADC) family in an emotional speech during the official opening of the 38th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government in Windhoek today.

President Kabila who punctuated his speech with humuor thanked the regional leaders who made his work as President of DRC easy saying he was also grateful to those who made it a little difficult.

President Kabila said his term in office has been a difficult and challenging journey aimed at unifying and consolidating state authority in his country.

He said the region has been a good family to the DRC and that the country appreciates the sacrifices made, some through blood offer to ensure peace in his country.

President Kabila said in order for those sacrifices not to be in vain DRC needs to consolidate on the gains made so far.

The DRC President further said his country has been rejecting any kind of blackmail and that it will be alert and steady fast.

Mr. Kabila said beyond peace and security, economic development has been top on the agenda of his administration.

He urged the SADC region to be strong and not to forget the past in as far as the regional body’s mission is concerned.

The theme of the summit which is being held at the Safari Conference Centre is “Promoting Infrastructure Development and Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development.’’

And Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa,Vera Songwe warned that peace was expensive to buy once lost.

Dr. Songwe said the region cannot afford instability which comes as a result of inequality saying equal access to necessities was key.

She further called on the region to invest in education infrastructure for youths so that the region gains from the massive human resource which is untapped.

She commended the region for the timely theme which she said represents the challenges of the time.

Meanwhile, African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat has called on the region to harness the energy of youths if the agenda for industrialization and regional economic growth is to be achieved.

Mr. Mahamat said youths are the majority in the region hence the need to harness their energy.

He however, expressed happiness that the SADC region has mainstreamed the cause for youths in its activities.

And Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has commended SADC and the African Union for sending election observers to that country.

President Mnagagwa said he took it upon himself to preach peace and love before, during and after elections saying all parties campaigned freely.

President Lungu was among ten SADC Heads of State who attended the official opening of the historical summit.

African Union(AU)Chairperson, Paul Kagame who is also Republic of Rwanda President also addressed the delegates.

Others in attendance were former Presidents of Mozambique Joaquim Chisano and Namibia’s Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba.

The 38th Ordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit of Heads of State and Government has officially opened here in Windhoek, Namibia with regional leaders calling for enhanced peace, security and cooperation.

President Lungu was among ten SADC Heads of State and government who attended the official opening of the historical summit.

African Union-AU Chairperson Paul Kagame who is also Republic of Rwanda President also addressed the delegates.

Others in attendance were former Presidents of Mozambique Joaquim Chisano and Namibia’s Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba.

Welcoming the delegates, President of Namibia Hage Geingob called on the SADC region to evoke the spirit unity in purpose which guided the founding fathers on the path towards liberalization.

Dr. Geingob who is the in-coming Chairperson of the SADC Chairman pointed out that the region needs to further evoke the spirit which led to the establishment of the SADC in 1992 to serve as a vehicle for development and integration of the region.

He noted that through adherence to strong governance principles the region will improve the standards of living and quality of life for its people.

The theme of the summit which is being held at the Safari Conference Centre is “Promoting Infrastructure Development and Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development.’’

And Dr. Geingob said it is within the interest of member countries to ensure that youths in the region are equipped with necessary tools required to govern industrialized nations.

Meanwhile, AU Chairman Paul Kagame warned that security issues on the continent tend to go beyond national sovereignty by affecting other nations.

The Republic of Rwanda President hence called for collective action to resolve crises of security with cross-border implications saying such have been settled by other countries or regional groupings.

He explained that SADC has accomplished this task in the past in handling political and security issues in Lesotho and Madagascar, and recently in the Comoros and that the regional body would be called upon to do the same in Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) like it did in Zimbabwe in the recent past.

Mr. Kagame said he is pleased that SADC and the AU accompanied the political process in Zimbabwe saying matters are in the right direction of the final stages of being resolved before the courts of law.

And the outgoing Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Joao Lourenco applauded President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo for his decision not to contest the December 23 elections in that country.

Mr. Lourenco who is the President of the Republic of Angola said the action by President Kabila is a true reflection of the respect for that country’s constitution.

He is hopeful that the government which will be ushered in after the elections will continue fostering peace and stability.

Mr. Lourenco said the will of the people in Zimbabwe prevailed but regretted the loss of life after the elections.

Namibian President Hage Geingob assumed the leadership of the regional organisation from his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa during Summit.

And Zambia will assume chairmanship of the troika for the SADC Organ on Politics, Defense and Security from Angola during the summit.

During the summit President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana, Joao Lourenco of Angola, Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe gave their maiden speeches.

Lusaka Dynamos get free card into 2018 Barclays Cup

2

Lusaka Dynamos will get to keep their 2018 Barclays Cup slot despite failing to make the top six cut after playing their allotted opening 19 games of the season.

Dynamos failed to finish the first half of the season in the top six and instead landed at number 8 on 28 points after playing and losing two of their rescheduled three games that were outstanding when they had over six players away on international duty for their respective national teams in May.

However, FAZ said Dynamos were obliged to qualify after accruing 33 points in their subsequent games played after Week 19 and that it was all still within the rules.

The decision saw Green Eagles bumped out of the Barclays Cup.

“The misconception is that people think that Barclays Cup participants will be chosen on account of clubs having played from Week 1 to Week 19. We need to draw a line here, it is not going by weeks, it is going by the games that have been played,” FAZ general secretary Adrian Kashala said.

“As at Week 19, all other clubs had played 19 games except for Power Dynamos who had played 18 games and accumulated a total number of 33 points then Kobe Warriors had accumulated 32 points, the Green Eagles had accumulated 29 points.”

And so Dynamos will go into the draw on that technicality that has been used for the first time in the competitions history since the inaugural tournament was held in 2007.

2017 semi-finalist Dynamos join 2015 winners Green Buffaloes, two-time champions Power Dynamos, record five-time winners and holders Zanaco.

2014 losing finalists Nkana complete the six FAZ Super League clubs in the draws.

Meanwhile, Young Green Buffaloes representing Zone One, demoted side Real Nakonde from Zone Three and Manchester United Zambia Academy from Zone Four, will be making their tournament debuts.

2015 semi-finalists Mufulira Wanderers will represent Zone Two in the draws.

2018 FAZ Super Division title race cut to three games

2

The 2018 FAZ Super Division season will be decided three games before the end of this campaign.

Football Association of Zambia general secretary Adrian Kashala confirmed on Friday that the title will be decided in Week 25 and not 38 ,meaning the champions will be known within the next seven matches.

FAZ has made the decision in order to beat the looming October 6 deadline for all associations to submit its four representatives for the provisional season of the 2018/2019 CAF inter-club competitions.

Matches for the provisional calendar will run from November, 2018 to May , 2019 before the new official format comes into effect in August, 2019.

“You are all aware that CAF has changed the calendar and so we will also have to adjust this season because we have been caught up in all this,” Kashala said.

“We have to submit the four participants in CAF competitions by 15th October so we have compressed our Super League so that by 6th October we should be able to find the clubs that will participate in continental competition. We have drawn the line as at Week 35 and not Week 38.

“Week 35 will decide the first four clubs to participate in the CAF championship next year because we will only have less than 10 days in which to submit our entries to CAF.”

First and second will represent Zambia in the CAF Champions League while third and fourth will participate in the Confederation Cup.

Zesco, Green Buffaloes, Green eagles and Nkana are currently on 62, 59, 63 and 49 points respectively.

Introduced tariff on internet calls is outright theft – Nawakwi

FDD president Edith Nawakwi
FDD president Edith Nawakwi

Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) President Edith Nawakwi has charged that the introduction of the 30 Ngwee per day tariff on internet based phone calls by government is outright theft from the people.

In a walk-in interview with Q-news, Ms Nawakwi who has been out of the media limelight for a while has accused government of colluding with the three mobile phone network providers to steal from the people.

vlcsnap-2708-03-30-02h20m09s479She says the introduction of the 30 Ngwee tariff on internet based phone calls is illegal without parliamentary approval.

Ms. Nawakwi who is also former Finance Minister says government cannot introduce a tax midstream without the authority of parliament.

She has since demanded that the tariff be done away with forthwith.

Ms. Nawakwi says the Minister of Finance and the Attorney General should have advised Cabinet that tax cannot be simply introduced without consulting the people’s representatives in parliament.

The FDD leader adds that the concern of government should be the cost of doing business in the country especially by phone.

And Ms Nawakwi says contrary to assertion, internet based phone calls are not free.

TIZ President Reuben Lifuka said Mr Lusambo has demonstrated good leadership for exposing the illegal road block that was mounted by the Zambia Police Traffic in Lusaka at Mungwi road. Chapter President

He demanded that action should be taken against these offenders and recommended immediate suspension.

And opposition leader Savior Chishimba says Mr. Lusambo must be commended for his approach in dealing with issues of public concern.

Mr Chishimba has since strongly recommended that President Edgar Lungu should elevate Mr Lusambo.

“I have no doubt that if President Edgar Chagwa Lungu elevated him to a full Cabinet Portfolio he would make an impact for the good of all,” Mr Chishimba said in a statement.

Mr Chishimba said Mr Lusambo has distinguished himself to be genuine in not only being loyal to the President, but also practical.

“The President needs Ministers who will go on the ground to listen to and act on the concerns of the people,” he said.

South Africa bans export of pure Zambian honey

26

The Zambian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa has expressed disappointment over a fresh ban imposed on the export of Zambian honey to South Africa.

In a letter written to South African authorities, Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Emmanuel Mwamba stated that he had learnt with regret that South Africa has restricted market access for Zambia’s pure honey with immediate effect.

He said that this is because a consignment allegedly from Zambia was found to be contaminated with a disease called American Foulbrood (Paenibacillus larvae).

This was contained in a statement issued to ZANIS, by first secretary for press and public relations Naomi Nyawali.Mr. Mwamba has stated that the ban was done outside procedures and trade regulations.

He said the procedure to impose the ban were breached and no official letter has been written to competent authorities in Zambia as required by trade protocols.

He also stated that no official results of the analysis and copy of import airway bill were provided for Zambia to authenticate and verify the source of such a consignment.

He said it was difficult to establish whether the matter was a misconduct of traders who sometimes mix various imports of honey products from other countries.

Mr. Mwamba has urged the authorities in South Africa to immediately reverse the ban on importation of pure honey until the laid down procedures and verification are done between experts from both countries.

He said Zambia exports its pure honey to other markets such as the European Union where stringent regulations exist and if such a disease was detected it would not have had that market access to the EU.

In a letter written to South African importers of pure Zambian honey, the authorities stated that audit samples from a consignment from a farm called Musonda Chitalu and Forest Fruite, detected paenibacillus larvae (American Foulbrood).

The letter to South African importers states that to this effect, all consignments from Zambia should be subjected to irradiation and all imports permits allowing pure honey from Zambia have since been withdrawn.

But Mr. Mwamba stated that during earlier effort to lift the ban on pure honey market access to South Africa, extensive work was done to demonstrate that Zambia did not have such a disease present in its honey.

He said the pure honey export trade to South Africa is now booming which went in a long way to reduce trade deficit and trade imbalance between the two countries.

Mr. Mwamba who said the recent development negated such positive strides further, called on the South African authorities at the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in South Africa to engage with their counterparts from Zambia to urgently resolve this regrettable development.

Zambia risks falling in one party state – Changala

16
Human rights activist Brebner Changala

Civil rights activist Brebner Changala has warned that Zambia risks reverting to a one party state if defections from the opposition to the ruling party continue.

Mr. Changala says this is because the country’s biggest opposition party the UPND is suffering from defections.

In an interview with QTV News, Mr. Changala suspects that the UPND is being targeted with the aim of weakening the resistance against what he has termed as the rule of mis-governance.

He said this explains why a lot of money appears to have been pumped in the alleged ploy to cause defections.

Mr Changala said it’s saddening for a democratic country like Zambia to have a political party that places price tags on members of another political party.

Lusambo to weed out “bad Eggs” in institutions

Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo waves to motorists along the Great East Road as he campaigns for Miles Sampa

Lusaka Province Minister, Bowman Lusambo has challenged Government Heads of Departments in both private and public institutions to work hard.

Mr. Lusambo said it is through hard work that can change the mindset of the people to effectively contribute to national development.

Mr. Lusambo stated that the positive contribution by departmental heads could help change the face of Lusaka and the nation as a whole.

ZANIS reports that Mr. Lusambo said this today when he featured on 5FM radio “Burning Issue” programme.

“Lusaka Province can be a shining example if we as leaders work hard. Then, other provinces can follow our path,” he said.

And Mr. Lusambo has reiterated his call to weed out what he termed as “bad eggs” from both the public and private sector.

The Minister notes that their still some people especially civil servants with a bad working culture in the Civil Service.

“There are still some bad and good eggs in both the private and public sector. To the good people, l must congratulate them but for bad eggs, please, watch out,’ he sounded.

Last month, the Lusaka Province Minister sent away over 40 civil servants at the Lusaka Provincial Administration for reporting late for work.

Meanwhile, Mr. Lusambo noted that government is determined to transform Lusaka province to becoming an economic hub.

He assured that roads in his region are being constructed, rehabilitated and maintained in order to open up and spur economic development in Chilanga, Chongwe, Chirundu, Kafue, Luangwa, Lusaka and Rufunsa districts.

The Minister also pledged to de-congest Lusaka through widening up some major roads in the city.

I.G suspends the four “corrupt” cops

Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja
Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja

The four traffic officers who were found collecting bribes from motorists by Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo have been suspended.

Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja in a statement said the four officers have been immediately suspended and are now under probe.

Mr Kanganja described the actions of the four officers as shameful and an embarrassment.

“I wish to state that what happened yesterday on Mungwi Road where four traffic Police officers from Matero Police who had mounted a checkpoint failed to account for money which was found on them by the Lusaka Province Minister Hon. Bowman Lusambo is shameful and an embarrassment to the institution,” Mr Kanganja said.

He said the four officers involved in the corruption allegation were immediately suspended yesterday and further investigations into the alleged corrupt practices have been instituted.

The I.G said this should serve as a warning to all other officers in the system that his command will not support any corrupt activities among police officers.

“Any misconduct involving police officers will not be taken lightly but will ensure that all those involved are dealt with in accordance with the law,” he said.

“Being a law enforcement agency, Police Officers are expected to be above board and are mandated to enforce the law with dignity.
I will ensure that punitive action is taken against the officers involved and any other officer that will be found wanting.”

He added, “In order to address Corruption allegations against Police Officers, my command has introduced a Direct Deposit System where fees and fines on all contraventions are to be directly deposited in Bank accounts. This system has been rolled out to Lusaka, Central and Copperbelt Provinces and will soon be rolled out to other parts of the country.”

“This was with a view of reducing the tendency of money exchanging hands at the point of duty. I therefore appeal to all erring motorists in all areas where the system has been rolled out to ensure that they avoid paying money to police officers but deposit directly in the bank.
For this system to be effective, it will require the cooperation from members of the public.”

Interview with media personality Chromez “The Voice of Lusaka”

Chisha Mubambe popularly known as Chromez, The Voice of Lusaka was born in Gaborone, Botswana to a father that was a journalist and a mother that has been into different types of businesses. He didn’t spend a lot of time in his country of birth as his family moved back to Zambia where both his parents are from after he was born.

The city of Lusaka being the capital of Zambia also makes it a melting pot of different cultures that Chromez was fortunate to be exposed to, it is this that partly makes him the person he is today, a man able to identify with different peoples’ way of living, this is common among people that grew up in the city too.

His radio career started at Pan African Radio in 2012, since then he has worked for a number of radio stations and is currently at Lusaka’s Rock FM 96.5.

KAPA187: What motivated you to venture into a career in media, particularly radio?

Chromez: I was always a fan of radio, I recall listening to people like 3illmatic, Killa Beats, Crunch, Scazzy Jay, Flava, K Smash, Atience, Kaliwa, Jay T, Ray Cast, Peaches (the list is long) and wishing I could be all up in that space but at that time it was just a thought, I wanted to be a Lawyer which was a childhood dream. Now that I think back to when I made that decision as a kid, it was just something cool to say to impress my parents, particularly my late father who was very stern about academics and excelling in them. The real drive to get into radio came from my teacher of English in high school, one time after a lesson when I read a paragraph or two during a comprehension exercise in class, she told me to try getting into media especially radio after school because I had the voice for it. She sparked the idea that was a thought that lingered in my mind for years and for that, I’ll always be thankful.

KAPA187:  You currently co-host the drive-time show on Lusaka’s Rock FM 96.5 with Torri Jonez. This happens to be my personal favorite drive-time show! We have a number of radio stations for people to tune in to, what makes your show unique?

Chromez: Really humbled to know you love the show, I appreciate your support. Live On Drive, which is the name of the show I host with Torri Jonez is unique because of the chemistry that exists between us, we are ACTUAL friends and so everything that you listen to is genuine which is why I think it resonates with a lot of people. We keep it real on every topic that we come across. Also our individual experience in radio is a major factor, Torri did radio when she was in London, I have been at this for 6 years and I’m always looking at ways to improve. It also comes down to the fact that Rock FM provides a great environment that fosters a very strong creative energy that exists among us. Most of all, we are all allowed to be who we really are on radio and that’s what people want to listen to.

Chromez and Torri Jonez

KAPA187:  During your career you have had the opportunity to meet and interview various international and local entertainment celebrities. Is there one entertainer you have had the best experience with?

Chromez: Even though I have had great experiences with most of them, Jay Rox stands out the most because he is not an earthling lol. I remember I interviewed him one time when Zone Fam was still together as a crew and then another time as a solo artist. During the latter, we had a very productive conversation on air and got massive response from the listeners. After the interview he invited me to a private screening to a video of his then unreleased song that turned out to be Auto Pilot, only a select few individuals from the industry were in attendance, this was 5 months before it officially dropped so it was a big deal. While there he opened up my mind about how big the entertainment industry in Zambia can potentially be and we traded thoughts on how to make things better. I have a lot of respect for him and everything he does, thanks to him I see things through a very different lens now.

KAPA187:  What is the best part of working on radio?

Chromez: Its magical! As exaggerated as that sounds, it’s absolutely true. We Radio Personalities speak to so many people every single day. The ability to communicate our thoughts while keeping in mind that, that in itself comes with a great deal of responsibility. To top it all off, it’s fun and we get paid for it.

Chromez got involved with the Agents of Change in August of 2016, a Non-Governmental Organization under the Children’s Radio Foundation whose aim is to train children with presenting skills so they can share knowledge about topics that cover climate change on radio. He was one of the facilitators that overlooked the training while he was at Power FM, ever since then he has continued working with the Agents of Change on projects of a similar nature. He is also a seasoned voice over artist that has done work for Coca Cola, MTN, Airtel, Zamtel, Zambeef, Proflight, Pizza Hut Zambia & Uganda, Tigmoo.com, Times of Zambia, Cavendish University, Stanbic Bank among others.

Chromez as an MC at an event

KAPA187:  Apart from your work on radio, you are also a voice over artist, MC and Podcast host, among other activities I’m sure. How do you manage to maintain a balance and make sure all ventures get the appropriate amount of attention?

Chromez: Google Calendar lol. The 24hrs we all get in a day can be managed easily with careful planning, that’s the only way to be efficient. I manage to perform all tasks and try as much as possible to get enough sleep, a tired mind tends to be less creative and I can’t risk that. I plan my days the way I want them to be, moreover I love what I do so I don’t have to drag myself to do anything especially because I set it up myself.

KAPA187:  Yes, time management is key. Your Podcast is titled “Raw Conversations with Chromez”, tell us about it, but first off, for people who may not know, what is a Podcast?

Chromez: That sounds like a question DJ Envy of the Breakfast Club would ask lol. A Podcast is a digital audio/video file that is made exclusively for the internet, it can be downloaded or streamed on many different platforms.

Raw Conversations with Chromez” is a Podcast I started doing back in late 2016 while I was still at Radio Phoenix.

While I was at Power FM, I hosted many celebrities as was mentioned earlier in this Q&A, I used to post every interview on the internet and they got received very well and so for a long time I had the idea to host a Podcast that focused on interviewing celebrities from all walks of life. Fast forward, my business partner and I acquired Microphones to use for projects under our company Rednovacane Media (Shameless plug lol) to produce content for pushthatlife.com (Another shameless plug, someone stop me lol). At this point the tools were available for the idea to be executed and so that’s how it started, it was received with great reviews and amassed a great fan base. A few things down the line got in the way of it being consistent but now it’s back and will be ongoing without any stoppages.

KAPA187:  As you interview your celebrity guests on the podcast, do you have specific topics that you cover, or is every episode completely different?

Chromez: Each one of the episodes is completely different, some of them have had topics picked beforehand because some people like to know what questions will be asked during an interview before it starts or just for my own pre-production purposes. Others were just free flowing like the episode with Chanda Mbao or Tiye P, there was no script and yet they are some of the highly rated episodes because the conversation was embellished with a multitude of gems.

KAPA187:  what advantages do Podcasts have over traditional radio shows?

Chromez: Traditional radio is beautiful but it is restrictive, most times there is so much to talk about but not enough time to really dissect topics. Think about the amount of time you were listening to a program like ‘Let The People Talk’ on Phoenix FM or ‘the Hot Seat’ on Hot FM or even ‘HardTalk’ on the BBC and the interviewer had to wrap things up quickly because there wasn’t enough time for them to go over everything. With a Podcast there is no time restriction, you can go as far as you can, shows like the ‘Joe Budden Podcast’ can go up to 3hrs sometimes and everything is worth listening to. Another thing that Podcasts have over traditional radio is freedom of expression, most program directors at radio stations tell their presenters to not go too far when talking about something like Politics because worst case scenario the radio stations license could be taken away from them. This is something that has happened in the past. With a Podcast, you don’t need a license and so you can’t be shut down unless you violate the terms of the service that’s hosting your show. The best advantage of them all is people can listen to the Podcast whenever they have the time to, thank God for the internet.

KAPA187:  What technology (device, software) do you use to record your podcasts?

Chromez: Well it’s a simple set up, Microphones, a mixer to control volumes and a computer with Adobe CS6.

KAPA187:  Tell us about the funniest thing that has happed during an interview?

Chromez: During one of the episodes, the guest, whom I won’t mention, put their phone on top of their shoe so as not to get distracted while recording. 1 hour into the episode the phone vibrated because someone was calling, they flipped out thinking it was some sort of creature that crept up their leg or something and so they ended up stomping on their phone. The phone went off and never switched on again, we laughed for at least 15 minutes lol

KAPA187: LOL, wow that must have been really hilarious. Tell us, what is the one mistake you see a lot of upcoming media personalities making? What advice would you give them?

Chromez: I see a lot of the young guys coming up neglecting the fundamentals of radio broadcasting, there are certain rules that are set in stone and in most cases a little guidance is needed for this. This can easily be avoided by doing two things, reading and following the steps of seasoned radio presenters. Reading is very essential, there are thousands of articles you can read to help gain knowledge in the field, with the world changing constantly, you cannot afford to be left behind. Paying attention to how seasoned presenters work will aid you by giving an idea on where you can take your craft but be careful not to fall into the trap of sounding exactly like your idol, you have to grow into your own and that may take some time but be patient with it, trust the process. It’s like how the late great media giant Dennis Liwewe described how he taught himself how to commentate soccer matches, he said he would record English commentators, then go into a secluded place and pay close attention to how they worked. He then started doing it himself but we all know for sure that he’s style is the most unique way of commentating in the history of sports.

KAPA187: That is great advice, any last words?

Chromez: I have to say thank you to everyone that has supported me from the start and those that joined along the way. Thank you for lending me your eyes and ears throughout this journey that I will not move away from. I have many ideas that are stashed away that I will continue executing as time goes by, there so much to do, sometimes ideas wake me up from my sleep and I spend hours writing them down and I know when they will be ready to be consumed. But for now enjoy “Raw Conversations with Chromez” that is available wherever you download/stream your favorite podcasts.

Woman Made me Love Zambia: Part Fifteen

6
Mwaiseni Stores along Cairo road

By Mwizenge S. Tembo, Ph. D.
Professor of Sociology

When I entered the tall Kwacha House NAMBOARD Headquarters ground floor on Cairo Road for work that morning, the first person I saw standing was our smiling Office Orderly Mr. Mbewe. He quickly beckoned me to his office. He had some good news.

“Mukumbukila Ba Tembo (you remember), a few weeks ago you asked me to look out for a letter from a woman. I think this must be the letter. It is a woman’s handwriting,” Mr Mbewe said as he handed me the brown dirty looking small envelope. It had a Mwinilunga Post Office date stamp. My heart was suddenly beating very fast. My hands were shaking as I slowly opened the envelope.

14 January 1977
Dear Husband Tembo
I don’t know to write. Only know Kaonde. I ask friend to write for me. Coming to Lusaka to see you. Nikukonda maningi Tembo. Meet in heaven forever.
Your Darling
Linda Jitanda

“Oh My God!! Abwera! (she is coming); Chipesha mano (one who kills a man’s brain), chipha dzuwa (sun killer), my brown sugar wanga, the one I think about day and night,” I muttered repeatedly staring at the empty ceiling.

“What? What Ba Tembo? What does the letter say? What does she say?” Mr. Mbewe asked as he peered around at my letter which was frozen between my hands in midair as he tried to see for himself what she had written on it. Mr. Mbewe impatiently snatched the letter from me.

“But Ba Mbewe, I am happy and annoyed,” I said as I hit my right fist into my left palm several times. “She does not say when she is coming. Is she going to come from the Great North Road from Kabwe direction, from Mumbwa Road, or from Livingstone from the Kafue Road?”

“It does not matter Ba Tembo,” Mr. Mbewe said. “What is important is that she is coming to see you.”

“Where will I take her? I don’t even have a flat. I can’t afford a hotel room. I can’t just take her to my uncle’s house because she is just a girlfriend and we are not even married.”

“You know, my wife and I have a tiny 2 room house in Misisi Compound. You can bring her there. Me and my wife and 2 children will sleep in one room and you and her in the other room.”

“Really Ba Mbewe?” I said with a low soft voice. “I would not want to trouble you and your wife and family.”

“I know I have a poor Office Orderly pay. That tiny house in Misisi Compound is all I can afford. Maybe she expects you to live Ku Mayadi (Middle Class home) since you are educated.”

“I told her when I met her at Sinjonjo Bar in Mongu that I have a degree from UNZA and work at Kwacha House at NAMBOARD Headquarters. I may have even told her I live in a beautiful flat. You know how it is with us men and girls and what we say to the woman we are attracted to”

“The offer is there for you Ba Tembo. If a woman loves you she should be able to go anywhere with you; even if you lived in a hole in a cave.”

“Thank you Ba Mbewe for your offer. Are you going to the Samora Machel Rally?”

“Yes, I will be going”

“Let me go to my office to get ready to go too.”

The day of Samora Machel Rally was finally here. The “Thank You” massive rally was for Zambia’s support of Frelimo and Mozambique during the armed struggle for their independence against the brutal Portuguese colonialism. The rally had been publicized for weeks. Offices in Lusaka were going to close down. The general public and all workers were expected and encouraged to attend the rally.

Mrs. Lungu, Hamoonga and a few others from the more than 10 employees from our large NAMBOARD Personel Division walked together to the rally. We walked along Cairo Road past the Main Post Office, Rendezvous Supermarket, the tall Bank of Zambia building up to Mwaiseni Store. We then crossed the Cairo Road Southern end roundabout to the vast open Kafue Park. There was short grass, numerous short and tall trees that provided shade. A large crowd of ten thousand had already gathered there. The yellow and black strip United Bus Company (UBZ) Dubrava buses were ferrying singing United National Independence Party (UNIP) Youths, Women’s Brigade, and other UNIP party members. The UBZ buses were also ferrying rally goers from all townships and compounds in Lusaka.

Large company buses, trucks, small pickup trucks, mini vans, and some cars were also ferrying rally goers. There were many company vehicles and buses with their appropriate logos; Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM), Industrial development Corporation (INDECO), Dairy Produce Board (DBZ), Crushed Stone Sales Limited, Supa Baking Company Limited, INDECO Milling, Zambia Breweries, Lusaka Engineering Company (LENCO), Chilanga Cement, Zambia Airways, and many others. All the large buses and trucks were parked on the grass at the back far edges of the Kafue Park rally venue. Some people climbed the trees, others sat in trucks and yet others climbed on top of the large buses.

I climbed on top of the Supa Baking Company bus because it was parked strategically in the far end but middle of the park where I had a good bird’s eye view of the front podium or dais. After about an hour every meter or foot of the massive Kafue Park was jammed with over twenty-five thousand seas of black faces. Various choirs from schools and UNIP party groups from many constituencies sung to entertain the audience and party officials made announcements on the massive loud speakers. They coached the massive audience how to respond to Samora Machel’s rally political chants and other expressions.
