Minister of Lands predicts second term for HH

Minister of Lands Elijah Muchima has predicted that the people of Zambia will ask President Hakainde Hichilema to seek a second term of office because of his good leadership.

Dr. Muchima said President Hichilema is selfless and has a big heart for the country.

He believes currently President Hichilema is creating an unprecedented legacy .

Speaking when First Quantum Minerals Limited donated land to the Government in Ndola on Thursday, Dr. Muchima highlighted debt restructuring, free education and recruitment of public workers as some achievements President Hichilema has scored.

“People have been thinking President Hakainde is just traveling anyhow, looking for wine. No, he doesn’t drink. He has been looking for friends to help him and he has managed. He wanted to cure the problem of the debt, the restructuring. Our friends (PF Government) left a big debt, there has not been any money and even today we have free education, teachers, nurses have been recruited,” he said.

Dr. Muchima continued:”The President has a big heart for this country. He is so dynamic and I can foresee you people of Zambia asking for another term for HH because the legacy he is creating is unprecedented. He is not a selfish man, look at his cabinet, balanced. Look at the things he is doing.”

He said President Hichilema was on the right path as Head of State.

“He has the interest of the people, not himself. This country today the IMF is coming in, that debt has been restructured in the interest of us the people just like Kaunda did, and Mwanawasa did. We need to follow good trends,” he said.

MP Given Katuta remains defiant

Luapula’s Chiengi Member of Parliament Given Katuta has remained defiant following her release from police detention on bond after being arrested on allegations of assaulting a photo journalist Contrary to Section 247 of the Penal Code Act Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

Ms. Katuta was released after meeting bond conditions late on Tuesday.

Times of Zambia journalist Henry Chunza aged 41 of Minestone Ng’ombe Compound alleges that whilst on duty at parliament premises, he was commonly assaulted by Ms. Katuta as he took photos of her after she was suspended in Parliament recently.

Ms. Katuta is accused of screaming at Chunza, spitting in his face and manhandling him with the help of other Members of Parliament.

Speaking after her release from custody, Ms. Katuta described her detention as political and vowed that she won’t be silenced.

“Thank you so much for your support my followers and to those I have seen insulting me, I also thank you for the insults. And those insults have become my lotion. You can insult me; call me names because I am not the first one to be called those names. Archbishop Alick Banda was called names, Bishop Banda from the Pentecost was also insulted, and Apostle (Sunday) Sinyangwe was insulted. You can insult me, you can judge me. You can still call me anything but I will still hold on to my God,” she said in a video on her facebook page.

The Independent MP said she is being judged by the opinion of many UPND followers even before the case goes to court.

“This war is not about me and I have seen everything. Those insulting you are making me popular and people are asking who is this Given. We cannot be silenced even if they have me arrested. I mean convict me for five years, it is OK. Chiengi Constituency is not only the platform where I can voice out. Mandela was incarcerated for 27 years but his voice never died,” Ms. Katuta said.

She continued:”There will be some people who will be saying there was a woman who was incarcerated, who was judged by the opinion of many UPND followers who went to the media houses to write things about her. Even the MISA, everyone was writing about me but it is well with my soul. So for your information I have learnt a lot from my incarceration. I have discovered that we have 31 people that have not been taken to court since February. What kind of justice is that in our country? I am very blessed and I feel honoured that at least I am part of this nation.”

ZANAMA calls for modernising of markets

The Zambia National Marketers Association (ZANAMA) in North-Western Province has called on the local authority to modernize and standardize markets to attract both traders and buyers.

In an interview with today ZANAMA provincial Chairperson Smith Kalota said mostly people prefer to buy from the streets due to the poor hygiene standards and lack of parking spaces.

“When you go to most of our markets they are not clean, worse still during the rainy season most people do not even want to enter inside and for those who drive they don’t even have enough parking spaces” Mr Kalota said.

The Provincial Chairperson has however commended government for doing away with street vending as it will bring sanity to the country.

“If you look at Lusaka right now the city looks beautiful and there is even sanity as it should be” Mr Kalota stated.

Mr Kalota has since called on the street vendors in Solwezi to utilize the free spaces in various markets to conduct their business.

He said it is not just unhygienic but also dangerous to conduct business on the road sides where it is open and vehicles may lose control at any point.

HH Consoles Zambia After Women’s World Cup Exit

5

Republican President Hakainde Hichilema has said the Zambia Women Team needs more exposure after being eliminated from the 2023 FIFA World Cup in New Zealand today.

Debutants Zambia are out of the World Cup after Wednesday morning’s 5-0 defeat to Spain just four days after losing their opening Group C match to Japan 5-0.

In a facebook post, President Hichilema said he takes pride in Shepolopolo Zambia’s performance in their debut World Cup appearance.

“We take immense pride in our Copper Queens’ exceptional performance in their debut World Cup appearance, where they are competing against the world’s best. Although we have faced defeat so far, we recognize that every loss comes with both pain and opportunities for growth. We should commit to building on this valuable experience,” he commented.

“To further develop our team’s capabilities we should provide our girls with more exposure to competitive friendlies and strengthen the women’s domestic league, “President Hichilema added.

Spain and Japan have qualified to the last 16 of the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Zambia faces Costa Rica on July 31 in their final Group C match.

Ba Lungu…..Stop Mocking Us!

35

In one of the articles I churned out earlier this year titled, “Will Edgar Lungu Pull A Quick One?” I observed that Lungu hasn’t quite retired from politics. I predicated that as we approach 2026, stage-managed calls for the former president to come back into politics will rise to a crescendo. In the fullness of time, the humble leader would invite the media to his Ibex Hill plush mansion and declare that he’s been compelled to run for public office again due to public demand. It seems the pieces are already beginning to fast fall into place.

It’s even surprising that those who consider themselves to be crafty and shrewd policians such as Chishimba Kambwili and Godfrey B. Mwamba could not read through such cheap schemes right from beginning. The other day, some women “waylaid” Lungu during his usual morning jogging and cried bitterly. They complained they are suffering under the UPND government.

“You are the only one we consider as president, we don’t know Hichilema. Please come back us and liberate us,” one of them can be heard complaining in Nyanja.

The jumble leader is again seen in a video on social media excitedly exchanging fist bumps and high fives with some kids. This is a choreographed strategy to portray him as a loving father to the public. As the plot continues to thicken, you should expect more individuals of different hues and shades to continue flocking to Ibex Hill for photo opts – students, labour leaders, the clergy, traditional leaders etc.

President Edgar Lungu must not dare take the people of Zambia for granted. He should stop mocking us! The country witnessed the worst atrocities under his brutal regime! Do we surely need to remind him his cadres used to pry open mouths of journalists and urinate in them? Has he forgotten that he closed our favourite The Post Newspapers and equally shut down the popular Prime TV station, institutions he considered critical of his government? Didn’t his cadres gouge out our eyes or hack us with pangas? Who killed Chibulo Mapenzi…..Grazier Mutapa…..Lawrence Banda? Who gassed us in our homes during our sleep? Did Lungu allow the opposition, particularly HH to interact with would-be voters? Weren’t the markets and stations “No Go Zones!” for UPND members? Who stripped our students of mealie meal allowances? Did Lungu avail CDF to opposition strongholds on time? Does he need reminding that his government and party officials became instant millionaires…..they’ve colossal sums of money stashed in their houses, and boast of fleets of cars and mansions everywhere!

Stop hiding in your so-called morning exercises, Sir! Be a man and declare your intentions now so that we can tackle you fairly and squarely!

President Hakainde Hichilema Commends Copper Queens

36

In a show of unwavering support for the Copper Queens, President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed immense pride in the national women’s football team’s debut World Cup appearance. Competing against the best teams on the global stage, the Copper Queens have earned accolades for their exceptional performance and determination.

Acknowledging that victory has eluded the team thus far, President Hichilema emphasized that every defeat brings both pain and opportunities for growth. In a statement, he urged the country and the Copper Queens to embrace this valuable experience and use it as a stepping stone for the future.

President Hichilema’s commitment to women’s football development is resolute, and he has pledged to further enhance the team’s capabilities. To achieve this goal, the Government will focus on providing the players with more exposure to competitive friendlies. These friendly matches against formidable international opponents will enable the Copper Queens to hone their skills, gain valuable tactical insights, and sharpen their competitive edge.

Additionally, the President stressed the significance of bolstering the women’s domestic league. Recognizing the vital role a strong domestic league plays in nurturing talent and fostering growth, President Hichilema pledged to support initiatives aimed at making the league more competitive and robust.

The President’s announcement came through his official Facebook page, where he articulated his commitment to women’s football and gender equality in sports. His message not only resonates with football enthusiasts but also underscores the importance of creating equal opportunities for women in all aspects of society.

The Copper Queens’ participation in the World Cup marks a significant milestone in Zambian football history. As they continue to inspire the nation with their passion and dedication, the support from the Government and the public will be a driving force behind their journey to success.

Copper Queens knocked out of 2023 Women’s World Cup

Copper Queen’s dreams of reaching the round 16 of the 2023 Women’s World Cup are over after they were thrashed 5-0 by Spain in their second Group C clash in Auckland, New Zealand.

Spain and Japan became the first two countries to pass through to the knockout stages of the World Cup after impressive 5: 0 victories over Zambia.

Coach Bruce Mwape had named a  largely unchanged side that lost to Japan 5;0 in the opening game , except that goalie Eunice Sakala made her full debut, replacing Catherine Musonda who was serving suspension after she was shown a red card in the match against Japan.

Spain’s Jennifer Hermoso was a player to look out for in the match and her reputation preceded her as her exceptional performance sent Zambia to the ruins.

An early goal from Teresa Abelleira in the 9th minute put Spain in the lead before an unmarked Jennifer Hermoso added another goal through a header from an Alexia Putellas cross to find the back of the net in the 13th minute.

Zambia did create some half-chances that troubled the Spanish side, through forward Barbra Banda but could not materialize into goals.

The Spaniards scored three second half goals to kill off the game and confirm Zambia’s elimination from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Zambia missed the presence of first choice goalkeeper Hazel Nali and Midfielder Grace Chanda after they were ruled out of the World Cup.

And President Hakainde Hichilema took to his Facebook page to console and encourage the copper queens.

The head of state said the team has faced defeat, but recognized that every loss comes with pain and opportunities for growth for the team.

He urged football administrators to provide the team with more exposure through competitive friendlies in order to strengthen the women’s league.

The Copper Queens and Costa Rica are the first teams to be knocked out of the competition after their failure to pick a point from their first two games.

Japan and Spain sit at the top with six points each and are guaranteed a place in the next round of the competition.

The two former champions will play on Monday to decide who gets the top spot of the group while World Cup debutants Zambia, will play Costa Rica on the same day in their formality game.

Four members of the Anti-Robbery squad arrested

Four Police Officers from the Anti-Robbery Department at Mufulira Central Police Station have been arrested in connection with the murder of Nason Simbeye, a 22 year old police officer who was found dead in his house at Sikalangwe Police Camp in Mufulira on 23rd October 2020.

Following an inquest, the Mufulira Magistrate’s court ruled that evidence from the Pathologist and the Ballistic expert who both separately testified that their findings revealed that Constable Simbeye was shot from the back while kneeling, had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the police officer did not commit suicide but was murdered.

The court further named Simbeye’s four workmates namely, Detective Sergeant Jameson Luundu Lubaya, Detective Sergeant Waluka Wallace Chilombe, Detective Sergeant Marvin Manda, and Detective Sergeant Ben Syakalundu as suspects and ordered that they be arrested and charged with murder.

Magistrate Sharon Luhanga said it had been proved that Simbeye was killed from an unknown place, before being transported to his house where his body was found, saying several witnesses testified that there was no pool of blood in the house, adding that his bed and beddings had no blood stains.

She said the presence of a gun from the Mufulira Central Police Anti Robbery Department at the crime scene implicated the officers, as there was no evidence that Simbeye had gone home with a gun on the fateful day.

“A trained police officer would not act in the manner in which you acted when you were sent by your boss to check on Simbeye at his house, and even though you attributed that to mere errors, I find it very suspicious,” Magistrate Luhanga said.

Earlier, the suspects testified that when they discovered Simbeye’s body, they left the crime scene unsecured, as they were in shock.

She said the testimony of a taxi driver, Hezron Sinkala revealed that one of the suspects, Constable Luundu already knew that Simbeye was dead around 07:00 hours, despite the deceased’s body being discovered around 10:00 hours.

Magistrate Luhanga further ruled that the matter be taken up by a police station outside Copperbelt Province, saying the Police Investigations Officer, Chief Inspector, Kennedy Siazyombo was biased in his investigations and ignored clues that would have led him to the deceased’s killers.

Mr.Siazyombo told the court that he forgot to have fingerprints at the scene taken, and did not ask ZICTA to avail the location where a message from the deceased’s phone was sent asking his fiancé for help, saying he had been attacked.

Meanwhile,a Police Intelligence Officer, Nchimunya Mambo testified that following Simbeye’s death the District Criminal Investigations Officer instructed him to collect all firearms from the Anti-Robbery Department due to allegations that they had killed  Simbeye ,but the firearms were later returned to them without being subjected to ballistic examination.

Mr.Mambo testified that following collection of the deceased’s body, the four officers insisted that they needed to search Simbeye’s house, alleging that he had stolen money from the police station, despite there being no report of missing money, but abandoned the mission after being informed that the deceased’s relatives were on the way to his house.

Another witness from the Police Amoury department, Inspector Imuksi Mwauluka said in December 2020, the Anti-Robbery Department failed to give an annual report to account for how ammunition had been used.

ERB grants seven power purchase agreements to seven power utilities

1

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has reviewed and granted seven power purchase agreements to seven power utilities for them to supply power to serve consumers better.

ERB acting Director General, Alfred Mwila says ZESCO has agreed with Maamba Collieries for a contracted capacity of 208.8 megawatts for a period of 20 years.

Mr Mwila also named Botswana Power Corporation which ZESCO has entered into for a contracted capacity of 200 megawatts for a duration of two years.

Speaking during a mid-year press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr Mwila said the power purchasing agreements are aimed at ensuring efficient and sustainable energy supply to consumers.

He named the other utility companies that ZESCO has partnered with as Zimbabwe Transmission and Distribution Company for a contracted capacity of 10 megawatts for a duration of 10 years.

Mr Mwila further said ZESCO has also entered into power purchase agreement with Integrated China energy for a contracted capacity of 600 megawatts for a duration of 35 years among other utility companies.

And Mr Mwila also mentioned that ERB will continue to conduct monthly petroleum pricing reviews so as to safeguard the interests of all energy stakeholders.

He explained that the monthly fuel price reviews are in response to the change in procurement and supply of petroleum products.

Mr Mwila also disclosed that ERB has continued to facilitate investment in the renewable energy space by issuing licences to firms that will generate power.

He said the renewable energy sector focuses on harnessing naturally occurring non depletable sources of energy which include solar, wind, biomass among others.

Meanwhile, ERB acting Director Consumer and Public Affairs, Stephen Bwalya disclosed that ZESCO has dismantled the backlog of over 67,000 customers who had been wanting to be connected to the grid.

He attributed the speedy connection process of clients to the national grid to the new effective management at the power utility company.
