Minister of Tourism Charles Banda has condemned the UPND’s behavior at the Kuomboka ceremony in Mongu. Mr. Banda says the unruly behaviour by the opposition UPND at the event has a negative impact on the country’s tourism sector.

He says it is unfortunate that the UPND leadership resorted to disrespecting President Edgar Lungu who was invited to officiate at the ceremony. The Minister said the event was a traditional ceremony that was exhibiting the rich cultural heritage of the Lozi people and not a political event. He also commended the police for their professional conduct during the Kuomboka ceremony

Mr. Banda who is also PF mobilisation Chairperson says it is important for the opposition to accept that Zambia only has one President who was duly elected by the people. He has also advised the UPND leadership to accept that they lost the 2016 general elections.

The Minister was speaking in a telephone interview with ZNBC news in Lusaka .

Meanwhile, the women Federation for world Peace Zambian Charpter have expressed grave concern at the behaviour displayed by opposition United Party for National Development, UPND Leader Mr Hakainde HICHILEMA at the Kuomboka ceremony of the Lozi Speaking People in western Province.

“As a civil society organisation, we stand to condemn the conduct of the UPND at the Kuomboka ceremony. The images that have gone viral on social media showing HH and his convoy driving next to the Presidents motor cade in what was clearly a show of disrespect for the Head of State is alarming. It is a direct provocation and unacceptable by any standard.

There is no where in the world were such a thing can be tolerated. We are disheartened as women and mothers and we want to put it on record that we urge all well meaning Zambians to treat these dispeakable and frequent acts of mischief by Mr Hichilema with the greatest contempt they deserve. “Said the Organisation Vice President Mrs Eunice Mbulo, in a statement issued this morning.

She further stated that the Organisation was appalled and grieved at the conduct of the said opposition political party and challenged Mr Hichilema to go and look for a country elsewhere because Zambia had only one leader with a full 5 year mandate and that Leader was President Lungu.

“Every Citizen within the boundaries of this country and even those Zambians in the diaspora must give President Lungu the respect due to him . As for Mr Hichilema, let him try again in 2021. As a civil society organisation, Our role is to provide checks and balances across the board and Zambia has a leader now and that Leader is President Lungu and he must be respected as such .” Read the statement.

And a businessman from mongu Mr Mubiana Chabeba has condemned Mr Hichilemas tribal tendencies stating that a few weeks ago, the prestigious N’cwala ceremony of the Ngoni People of Eastern Province took place and was graced by several opposition parties, civil society organisations , the church and the business community and HH did not attend the ceremony which drew participation from all tribes and political affiliations.

“Traditional Ceremonies are national events . National pride . But he shunned the one in Chipata and comes to cause confusion at the one in mongu. These tribal tendencies he displays are just shocking. I urge him to tone down. ” he said.

He further stated that HH had miserably failed the leadership test on several counts and needed to retire from active politics on moral grounds.

Motorcade scandal-IG defends police for giving way to HH as State House condemns HH and GBM

Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja says police officers acted in a responsible way by overtaking UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema’s motorcade to avoid loss of life in Mongu on Saturday.

And State House Spokesman Amos Chanda has condemned Mr Hichilema’s conduct describing it as foolish.

President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade and Mr Hichilema’s almost clashed as they headed to Lealui for the Kuomboka ceremony.

But Mr Kakoma said the officers acted in a reasonable way by overtaking Mr. Hichilema’s motorcade to avoid loss of life.

He however warned that the Zambia Police is not going to sit and watch such lawlessness in the country.

“If what is portrayed in the Picture circulating on social media concerning the motorcade of Hakainde Hichilema is a reflection of what truly happened, then it is very unfortunate because such actions of failing to give way to a Presidential motorcade are tantamount to obstruction of road way as well as endangering the life of the President,” Mr Kakoma said.

“However, I am still waiting for a full report on what transpired from officers who were on the ground and appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the State Security Act and other relevant pieces of Legislation,” he said.

But President Lungu’s Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda said Mr Hichilema and his Vice President Geoffrey Mwamba acted foolishly.

“Route lining was done. HH passed major check points in good time but slowed down so Eagle One can find him on the way which happened. We had two options: to slow down and allow him to reach Limulunga or to bump him off and create some scene of sorts which is what he wanted,” Mr Chanda said.

He added, “A decision was made to bypass him and in our mind we were clear no danger was posed to HE unless HH himself would ram his car into Eagle One. A split second decision would be made to prevent that cause at that stage any movable object in motion or stationery is constantly on target from some close range, which is why it was spectacularly foolish for HH and his minders to place themselves into that real and eminent danger!”

He said, “Secondly, as per established security and protocol orders, a decision to bump off all strange objects was made but a quick consultation upwards resulted into a different option which was undertaken.”

“Thirdly, as the result something happened that made HH and GBM and their entourage to remain outside the arena some 500 meters away instead of being in the VVIP shelter some 5 metres away from where the Litunga was disembarking from the royal barge! From the Harbour, that foolishness cost them the vantage point cause as soon as guest of honour passed royal and state protocol did not allow anyone to pass.”

Mr Chanda further said, “As a result, two men hobbled away in shame even before the king could rise to enter his summer palace. As I write today a royal banquet is taking place and the two men left for Lusaka two hours ago, their seats empty notwithstanding the cows and mealie meal they donated!

Mr Chanda said, “if there is such a successful cooperation between security and PR since I got into State House this was one of them. We decided to neutralize it as minor incident and leave the Kuomboka intact after such a long time of its absence. Moreover, there is something we are seeing here politically which we cannot waste away in a foolish Hakainde stunt.”

President Edgar Lungu yesterday graced the 2017 colorful Kuomboka traditional ceremony of the Lozi people which was attended by thousands of people.

The Litunga’s six hour journey started from Lealui on the loya Badge – Nalikwanda to Limulunga where scores of people welcomed him.

The Nalikwanda docked at the Nayuma Harbour at 17:30 hours amidst loud applause from thousands of spectators.

The Litunga soon after disembarking met president Lungu and exchanged greetings before walking to the palace arena.

The Litunga together with President Lungu walked from Nayuma Harbour to Limulunga Palace.

The Litunga, Lubosi Imwiko the second, together with President Lungu sat on the traditional seats at Limulunga Palace to mark the climax of the Kuomboka traditional ceremony.

This year, the Nalikwanda had 180 paddlers plus drummers hitting almost 200 people on board. Justice Minister Given Lubinda was among the paddlers.

Meanwhile, United Party for National Development (UPND) has said that Zambia Police almost blocked his entourage from entering the arena at Limulunga. In his facebook post, the UPND leader said that the Police action happened under the nose of President Lungu.

“This was happening right under the nose of those claiming to be leading our country. We have always called for peace and we were peaceful on our way to Limulunga, but due to the massive support we are receiving, we were closely and dangerously pursued by the police, ” Mr Hichilema wrote

“We thank God that no one died but clearly, this was an irresponsible thing for people that claim to be in leadership,” Mr Hichilema said.

Mr Hichilema described Police action as irresponsible, unnecessary and purely childish as it could have led to loss of life.

” In such circumstances where you have crowds, people could have died, but clearly there was no care from them,” Mr Hichilema wrote.

Today’s Message: Focus on What You Have

13

Today’s Scripture

“Here is what I have seen: It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his heritage.”
(Ecclesiastes 5:18, NKJV)

Focus on What You Have

The scripture talks about how God has given us the power to enjoy what is allotted and appointed to us. That simply means that I don’t have the power to enjoy your life. You may have more success, more money, more friends or a better job, but if you put me in your life, I’m not going to enjoy it. We are uniquely designed to run our own race.

When we truly understand and embrace this, we won’t be tempted to compare or wish we had what someone else has. You won’t think, “If only I had their talent…” No, if God wanted you to have that talent, He would have given it to you. Instead, take what you have and develop it. Make the most of it. Don’t think, “If only I had her looks…” No, God gave you your looks. That’s not an accident. The life you have has been perfectly matched for you.

Now, you’ve got to do your part and get excited about your life. Be excited about who you are—your looks, your talent, your ability, your personality. When you’re passionate about who you are, it brings honor to God. That’s when God will breathe in your direction and the seeds of greatness in you will take root and begin to flourish!

A Prayer for Today

“Father, I thank You for giving me the gifts, talents and abilities to enjoy life and accomplish Your will. Today, I choose to put my trust and hope in You knowing that You have equipped me for the destiny You have for me in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

ZANEC commends transfer of primary Schools to Councils

Zambia National Education Coalition (ZANEC)  has commended Ministry of Education for its planned transfer of all primary schools in Zambia to the Local Authorities.

In an interview with Ama FM Radio, Mr. Kabika Kakunta said the move will contribute positively to the education sector in Zambia.

Mr. Kakunta who also echoed similar sentiments with the National Action for Quality Education (NAQEZ) Executive Director Aaron Chansa suggesting that almost all Local Authorities in Zambia are overwhelmed with huge administrative and financial constraints.

And he, however, said  Government’s planned devolution includes the transfer of the Ministry of Education  Schools to city councils.

“I would like to recommend this process of devolution and primary schools be transferred to local councils because the local councils are the ones dealing with land issues, therefore it will be easy for schools to own land”

“The only worrying thing is about  labour and  how ready is our local government to handle the exercise  since they already have their own challenges and also how adequate is the human resources Kakunta said.

Government recently announced that it may grant City Councils exclusive rights to manage Educational facilities across the country.

It is possible for the courts to overturn the 2016 Presidential Election-Charles Kakoma

69
Charles Kakoma
Charles Kakoma

United Party for National Development (UPND) spokesperson Charles Kakoma has said that it was possible for the courts to overturn the 2016 presidential election results.

Reacting to Rainbow party leader Wynter Kabimba’s comments that UPND is chasing wind by hoping for the courts will overturn the 2016 presidential elections and declare Hakainde Hichilema as dully elected head of State, Mr Kakoma said that UPND are seeking justice in Court.

“This may not happen in Zambia but it has happened elsewhere, we have gone to court because we are seeking justice,” Mr Kakoma said.

Mr Kakoma claimed that even Jesus Christ is aware that the UPND won the election.

During a Hot FM radio programme dubbed The Hot Seat, Mr Kabimba said that UPND was chasing the wind by believing that the courts of law will declare its president Hakainde Hichilema as head of State.

Mr Kabimba, a lawyer and former Minister of Justice and Patriotic Front secretary-general, said that what the UPND ought to do instead is to make a bold political decision and accept that President Lungu is head of State.

Mr Kabimba said the UPND must forget about using the courts of law to mobilise itself because it is chasing the wind.

“UPND will make history if they are going to get the decision of the courts that Edgar Chagwa Lungu is not President and HH is the President. They will make history and Christ will thank them,” he said.

The Rainbow party leader said political parties that have succeeded like the PF did in 2011 have had to make very difficult decisions after taking into account the political situation in the country.

“This will be the first time in my over 30 years of practising law and over 50 years of reading history, especially about Africa, that you are going to find an election nullified or annulled in the courts of law,” he said.

Mr Kabimba said the UPND needs to distinguish between a legal problem and a political problem.

Parliamentary Committee calls for the recapitalization of the Zambia Railways

THE Parliamentary Committee on Communications, Transport, Works and Supply has called for recapitalization of the Zambia Railways Limited to cushion the pressure on the country’s road infrastructure.

Committee chairperson Douglas Siakalima said although there were a number of competing needs in the country, the railway company needed adequate injection of capital to make it viable and operate effectively.

He was speaking in an interview soon after the six member committee inspected the operations at the Zambia Railways in Kabwe on Thursday to appreciate the progress made by the firm.

Mr Syakalima who is also Chirundu Member of Parliament noted that the company was doing a tremendous work by rehabilitating some of the old locomotives but could do even better if the company was given more money.

“I know that there are competing needs in the country, but I think it is important to recapitalize huge investment like this one; we should not just let it go like this,” he said.

“We also think that if Zambia Railways was helped in terms of recapitalization, we will know that we will offload the pressure on our roads so that many of the goods are transported using railway which will make the lifespan of our roads longer.

Mr Syakalima noted that effective railway transport in Zambia could also help to reduce the current high road traffic accidents in the country as well as loss of goods on transit.

Msanzala Member of Parliament Peter Daka who is one of the committee members said it was a myth to suggest that US $120 million Eurobond which was given to the railway company had been misused.

Mr Daka who is also former Transport Minister and communications Minister said there had been a lot of work including the reconditioning of engines for the trains that should be appreciated and supported by every Zambian.

“I have seen what is going on where the generators and the engines are being put together and there is serious work that is going on and if Zambia Railways is given more money, it can do better than the expectations that are outside,” he said.

He said the management at the company had put in so much to resuscitate the company and parliamentarians would support every effort that was being made.

Earlier, company chief executive officer Christopher Musonda told the parliamentarians that the company had moved about 634,500 tonnes of cargo in the past one year and generated K173 million.

Mr Musonda however noted that the reduction of imports and exports as well as operational constraints in neighbouring countries had limited the income generation.
