Zesco seek critical Group A win in CAF Champions League

0

Zesco United battle to return to the top two in Group A of the 2016 CAF Champions League when they host ASEC Mimosa of Cote d’Ivoire at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday.

George Lwandamina’s side is looking for a win to see them bounce back from their 2-0 away loss in Morocco against Wydad Casablanca on June 29 in Rabat that saw them drop from top of Group A to third and let their hosts’ replace them at the summit of match-day-two.

Wydad have maximum six points after beating ASEC 1-0 away on June 18 on the same date Zesco beat Al Ahly 3-2 in Ndola.

Victory will lift Zesco to second ahead of Wydad’s away game against bottom place Al Ahly who are bottom and win-less.

ASEC are second and tied on three points from two games with Zesco with all to play for.

A victory is essential for Zesco knowing very well that the return leg is just four days away on July 20 in Abidjan.

Zesco must win to rise to six points as insurance for that away match next Wednesday.

After the two legs, an away date against Al Ahly awaits Zesco in their penultimate Group A match on August 12 looms in Egypt as the battle for the magic nine points to put them a strong position for the top two semifinal qualification gathers pace.

Lwandamina has a strong side at his disposal with striker Idris Mbombo back after a long-term injury layoff and who has four Champions League goals, tied with midfielder Cletus Chama.

However, defender David Owino is battling to shrug off illness to make the team after missing Tuesday’s 1-1 home draw with Mufulira Wanderers.

Mighty beat Forest Rangers

4

Mighty Mufulira Wanderers on Friday picked up their first win under Portuguese-born coach Paulo Silva from his two games in charge.

Mighty beat Forest Rangers 1-0 at Shinde Stadium in Mufulira to hand Silva his first wins from two games in charge after kicking off his tenure with a 1-1 draw away to Zesco United on Tuesday.

Striker Rahim Osumanu headed-in the winner in the 27th minute off a Taonga Bwembya cross.

It was the Ghana-born strikers second successive goal after scoring in that draw with Zesco.

Osumanu could have walked away with at least a hat-trick but his 14th minute and 47th efforts were parried and saved respectively by Forest goalkeeper Jairos Mulenga.

Forest had a great chance to secure an equalize in the 83rd minute but Nawa Nawa failed to connect with Logic Chingandu’s cross.

Mighty rise to 11th place on 21 points, three behind Forest who stay put in 7th position ahead of the rest of the Week 18 games that will be played on Saturday and Sunday.

Frank Bwalya urges Vernon Mwanga to stop rumour mongering

PF Deputy Spokesperson Frank Bwalya has called on veteran politician Vernon Mwanga to stop rumour mongering and start behaving like the respected states Man he should be.

Commenting on the statement by the veteran politician who accused the PF of not observing the suspension of campaigns in Lusaka as they have been seen moving in branded vehicles Mr Bwalya said Dr Mwanga has reduced himself to a rumour monger as there is no truth in his statement.

He said the PF was obedient to their leaders and that they respect state institutions hence have not ignored the suspension but we’re effecting the suspension of campaigns in the respected places.

He explained that the members of PF who are using branded cars are just moving from home to work and back home and not using them as insinuated by the former Information Minister.

“We are very very disappointed with Dr Mwanga who is supposed to pass the test of a States Man, a seasoned politician should reduce himself to a rumour monger. He has reduced himself to a rumour monger because there is no truth in the statement that PF has been campaigning and the ECZ has been doing nothing.

“We would like to urge Dr Mwanga to stop this unbecoming behavior of rumour mongering. We know he is supporting the opposition UPND but even then we urge him to be truthful and to be objective let him contribute to our politics and to public discourse objectively,” he said.

Take responsibility, ECZ Chair tells political leaders

14
Chairperson Judge Esau Chulu
Chairperson Judge Esau Chulu

The Electoral Commission of Zambia says political party leaders should take full responsibility of the actions of their supporters and cadres.

ECZ Chairperson Justice Esau Chulu says political parties should not view next month’s elections as a matter of life and death.

Speaking in Lusaka this morning during a meeting of all presidential candidates on the need for peaceful campaigns, Justice Chulu reminded the candidates who include President Edgar Lungu of the commitment they made to ensure peaceful campaigns during the interparty indaba facilitated by the church.

He has also called on the police to apply the public order Act fairly as they maintain law and order.

Justice Chulu however, stated that Police should ensure that perpetrators of violence and anyone caught abrogating the electoral code of conduct is dealt with firmly, without favor.

And Justice Chulu said the commission has been closely monitoring events on the ground in Lusaka and Namwala districts and has established that the political environment has been relatively quiet following suspension of campaigns.

He however regretted that some political parties have abrogated the ban as branded campaign vehicles have been seen moving around.

Those attending the meeting which has gone into a closed door session are UPND president Hakainde Hichilema,UPP’s Saviour Chishimba,FDD’s Edith Nawakwi,UNIP’s Tilyenji Kaunda and Rainbow party’s Wynter Kabimba among others.

Just stop arming and sponsoring cadres for violence instead of calling for prayers-FDD

77
Antonio Mwanza
Antonio Mwanza

The FDD says they have received the call by President Edgar Lungu for the country to have national prayers over political violence with a pinch of salt.

Antonio Mwanza who is the Party’s Spokesperson explained that last October the country gathered for prayers which he said turned out to be an endorsement gathering for Republican President.

Mr Mwanza who quoted several Bible verses said it is not God who is providing the pangas and other weapons being used to perpetrate violence in the country but the politicians.

Below is a statement issued by Mr Mwanza.

In Exodus 20:7 The Lord God Almighty warns that thou shall not use His name in vain. In Proverbs 29:2 scripture tells us that when good men are in authority the people rejoice but when evil men are in power the people cry. James 2:14-26 teaches us that faith without action is dead. My brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?

Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? A man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Therefore we have received the call by President Edgar Lungu for us to have national prayers over political violence with a pinch of salt. Isn’t Mr Lungu the same man that called for prayers on the 18th of October that turned out to be a political gathering were some clergy used God’s name to endorse President Lungu for political office? What have we seen after those prayers: more violence and more police brutality.

We all need to be honest enough and ask ourselves the following questions:

  1. Who is arming cadres with guns, pangas, military fatigue, money and beer? Is it God or it’s us politicians?
  2. Who is in charge of the police and all armed forces?
  3. Who is preaching hatred and abusing state power? Is it God or it is us politicians?
  4. Who is abetting and tolerating violence? Is it God or it is us politicians?

Brethren, tulayangasha Lesa. Lesa alakanda. Just stop arming and sponsoring cadres for violence. Allow the police to do their job professionally. And allow us all to enjoy our fundamental rights and liberties to campaign and assemble freely. Don’t use God’s name for political expediency.

Health Minister, Joseph Kasonde, has reiterated government’s commitment to addressing the shortage of health workers in Kasama district.

Speaking when he officiated at Kasama School of Nursing graduating ceremony, Dr Kasonde said nurses play a critical role in the provision of health care services in the country.

He said it is in this vein that government is dedicating itself to ensuring that the current shortage of over 500 health workers in Kasama district becomes a thing of the past.

Dr Kasonde disclosed that the authority has made significant progress in addressing the challenge as government has already approved the recruitment of over 1000 health workers across the country this year.

He, however, urged the graduating nurses to dedicate their profession to serving the people in communities if their services are to be appreciated by the public.

Dr Kasonde noted that in many instances patients fail to appreciate services offered in public institutions due to lack of dedication and passion by some workers.
And speaking at the same event, Zambia Nurses Union leadership commended Government for its positive support towards its members across the country.

The template of the Referendum ballot paper for the referendum voting
in the August 2016 elections.

Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) Member Nelly Mutti has cautioned Zambians not to vote for the national referendum on 11th August, 2016 lest they face the costs, Reports Pan African Radio Journalist Hermit Hachilonde.

Speaking at the just ended Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) Public Fora at the Zambia Institute for Public Administration (NIPA) yesterday, Ms. Mutti said the process is fraudulent and Zambians should not condone mediocrity on pertinent national issues.

She also said the referendum question is riotous and extremely confusing for voters to make informed decisions.

Ms. Mutti emphatically pointed out the need for citizens to make politicians realize that the ballot has the power to appoint governors of a people in a democracy.

“My vote regarding a referendum is NO and Zambians must also vote against the referendum because the whole process is fraud” she said

Mr. Mutti also expressed discontent at some citizens promoting an advocacy in favour of voting for the national referendum when they are alert to the fact that the entire process is spiteful.

“and am glad because the people advocating for referendum have admitted that there are some mistakes” Mrs. Mutti said

One can also upload clinical information including reports, images and scans, to be analyzed by Apollo experts, who can then provide an opinion within a stipulated time.

With patient centricity at the core, Apollo Hospitals has been a forerunner of integrated healthcare in Asia, as well as globally. Apollo Hospitals is widely recognized as the pioneer of private healthcare in India with a network of 64 hospitals, 2,200 retail pharmacy stores, 100 primary care & diagnostic clinics, health insurance services, clinical research division and 15 academic institutions including a medical school. While Apollo has treated many patients and trained many doctors from Kenya as well, it is now planning to further enhance India’s contribution to Africa’s healthcare services. Apollo Hospitals group is partnering with Airtel Africa to revolutionize the access to healthcare system.

Airtel is the world’s third largest global telecommunications services company (based on subscribers) which operates in 19 countries across Asia and Africa (including Kenya), providing 2G 3G and 4G wireless services, mobile commerce, fixed line broadband and voice services depending upon the country of operation.

He said there can only be one winner in each election hence the need for politicians to be sober-minded and accept the poll results.

Chief Chitimukulu further cautioned politicians to avoid inciting violence among their respective supporters.

Meanwhile, Paramount Chief Chitimukulu has asked Zambians to pray for the country ahead of the August 11 general elections.

He said the election period is a crucial time which requires people to seek God’s face and dedicate the nation into His hands.

The traditional leader reminded Zambians that other than voting for their preferred candidates, they also have a duty to pray for political leaders and ensure that peace is maintained.

And Chief Chitimukulu has called on Zambians to remain united and refrain from political violence as the country heads to the polls.

He said Zambia is a beacon of peace, therefore, Zambians should not allow political violence to change their ways.

The Paramount Chief was speaking to ZANIS in an exclusive interview in Kasama yesterday.

The second media monitoring report released by MISA Zambia shows that overall, the PF received significantly more coverage across all the four public media outlets than any of the other political parties.

The research was conducted from 23rd May to 29th June 2016 and specifically focuses on four public media outlets, namely ZNBC TV, ZNBC Radio 2, The Times of Zambia and Zambia Daily Mail.

The party with the second most coverage was the UPND but the coverage was half the amount of the coverage given to the PF party.

Other political parties received less than 10% coverage across the four media outlets.

This trend is similar to what was observed in the pre-election period media monitoring exercise.

The research also shows that the coverage of the MMD party, which is not competing in the presidential race, surpassed most of the other political parties participating in the presidential elections.

“In terms of the nature of coverage, the UPND party received more explicitly negative coverage compared to either the MMD party or the PF party, which consistently received more neutral or explicitly positive coverage,” the report says.

“On ZNBC TV 1 the PF party received nearly five times as much coverage (56%) as the next most covered party (UPND, with 12%).Furthermore, the MMD party, without a presidential candidate in this year’s election, received more coverage (9%) than other political parties who are actively involved in the presidential elections, such as UPP (5%), FDD (2%), Rainbow (2%), UNIP (2%) and the Green party (2%).”

It shows that the MMD had 88%) and UPP party received 80% more explicitly positive coverage than any other party while the UPND at 29% had the least number of explicitly positive stories on ZNBC TV.

Other political parties received a significant amount of neutral coverage for the majority of their stories.

The report also shows that election campaigns at 39% and election related violence at 8% including political alliances at 7% were the most covered key themes by ZNBC TV 1 during the monitored campaign period.

The report also shows that female candidates have not been allocated enough space during the election campaign.
“Across the 4 media outlets monitoring approximately 77% of coverage was devoted to male candidates and personalities. ZNBC TV1 stands outs with a fairly balanced gender coverage.”

The report which was authored by MISA Zambia, the Media Liaison Committee with technical support from BBC Media Action recommended increased coverage and discussion on topics relevant to the population so that the electorate can make an informed choice.

It also called for balance of coverage for the different political players in 2016 tripartite elections noting that that the heavy bias towards the PF should be balanced with a more equitable and fair coverage of the other political parties.

It also wants increased points of view, multiple voices and perspectives to ensure that a diversity of views is represented and increased coverage of women players in the tripartite elections.

Post Newspaper has been reducing to a gossip publication-Dora Siliya

Energy Minister Dora Siliya has charged that she does not bother responding to perceived attacks by the Post Newspapers because it has now apparently become a gossip circulation.

Ms Siliya who is recontesting the Petauke Parliamentary seat on the PF ticket said she does not bother suing the Post Newspaper saying she the newspaper has bigger problems.

She said the Post lost their clout ages ago and are just a gossip circulation now.

“Many have asked me why I never sue the Post even after the lies they tell about me. First it was that I insulted President Sata, an issue late President Sata and I cleared when we met in 2012. Second it was that I referred to my ex-husband in a derogatory manner in 2011 campaigns,” she stated.

Ms. Siliya said there have been many other lies with the latest being an intrusion on our PF Pink chat group.

“The truth is I was so disturbed by the picture of the poor dead Lady I felt it was disrespectful to be circulating her picture in that manner. Of course the Post is still so desperate that they believe using my name will win them favour in the UPND or even earn them the much needed cash they need to pay ZRA,” she said.
“I wrote on my FB that day of the UPND riots that no amount of provocation should lead to violence as there are enough words to address any situation sternly. And there many examples in the World. As PF Pink, the female youth wing of the PF, we were very disturbed that politics, a competition of development ideas can lead to death of a young Woman,” she said.

She added, “But it’s even worse to see the Post abuse her death by lying about why I asked that PF Pink stops circulating the picture of the dead person. There was no winner on that day. We all lost and its why President Lungu called for peace once again. May God continue to bless Zambia.”

Post recently reported that Ms. Siliya over the weekend castigated members of the PF Pink WhatsApp group for posting a picture of Mapenzi Chibulo, who was shot dead by police on Friday.

Some PF members posted photos of Chibulo, which were captured during a protest march moment before she was shot dead by one of the police officers.

But Siliya is said to have told the PF members to stop helping the opposition in spreading images of police brutality.
“Please, please let’s not help spread this kay kay kay. Even ZNBC did not show it,” Siliya posted.

Siliya’s instruction is said to have been followed by an apology from the originator of the posting who said, “Sorry Honourable”.
