HH and UPND pose for a photo with some unsuccessful applicants
UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema and his running mate Geoffrey Mwamba on Sunday evening met some UPND members who were not adopted to stand on the party’s ticket in the August elections.
Mr Hichilema called on the members to remain united saying the UPND is one family.
“As we move beyond nominations I would like to extend my gratitude to all the candidates who applied for positions within the UPND family. I know that you all have something valuable to contribute in the coming weeks to our campaign, and beyond that when we are in Government,” Mr Hichilema said.
“For this reason, I appeal to you to remain united and to continue with us on our journey towards economic liberation. We are one family and there is room for all of us,’ he said.
“We do not discriminate because we know we are stronger together and that if we want to deliver real change and progress then we must pull in the same direction.”
“Let us differentiate ourselves from the PF in our actions and commitment by showing that we approach Government as a service to the people and not as a means of personal gain. This requires sacrifice and putting self-interest to one side for the good of our country.”
Chairperson Judge Esau Chulu
Former Electoral Commission of Zambia Director Dan Kalale has raised concerns over the announcement by Home Affairs Minister Davies Chama that prisoners will be allowed to vote in the August elections.
Last week, Home Affairs Minister Davies Mwila directed the ECZ to allow inmates with voters cards to vote in the forthcoming elections.
Mr Kalale said the opposition should open their eyes because the development is a clear red flag.
He accused the PF of introducing methods that even the ECZ is not aware about.
Mr Kalale also described ECZ Chairman Justice Essau Chulu as the most spineless Judge he has ever come across saying the man has no mind of his own.
Writing on his Facebook page, Mr Kalale said Justice Chulu in all details his clueless about the electoral process.
“For those that have not seen cluelessness in its physical form, just look at Essau Chulu and you would have seen it all,” Mr Kalale said.
He said under normal circumstances, the ECZ was the entity that was supposed to make the announcement about inmate being allowed to vote.
Mr Kalale said there was need for more public awareness of the change coupled with more information on the modalities of the new dimension in terms of the voting procedures.
“In any case, could it be desperation on the part of the PF government? Will the prisoners be taken to their polling stations or ECZ will create new polling stations in prison precincts by also spelling out safeguard measures put in place to counter possible manipulation?”
He added, “In my view this is not an easy undertaking that should come as by the way sort of a thing or as on the spur of the moment after thought. In case this is in the amended constitution, it still doesn’t sit well because ECZ doesn’t seem to have taken that consideration in their preparations of August 11 event.”
Mr Kalale has since challenged the ECZ to avail to the stakeholders the promulgated subsequent legislation to back up the new provision in the Amended Constitution before they effect the ‘Ministerial directive’.
“By the way it’s not everything that has been touched in the Amended Constitution that should haphazardly take effect without due diligence consideration, i.e. has the dual citizenship clause been effected?”
“If not, then why should a Minister announce that Prisoners will vote without ECZ showing preparedness of the change in the statute?”
Meanwhile, Electoral Expert Macdonald Chipenzi has stated that it is erroneous for Mr Mwila who was quoted as having said that the law existed that allows prisoners and detainees to participate in this year’s general elections to make such a public electoral blunder.
Mr Chipenzi said the directives by Mr Mwila to prisoners or detainees with voters’ cards to participate in this year’s General Elections is illegal as it is against the provisions of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016.
“Under section 47 (c) states that “a person shall not be entitled to vote at an election if that person, at the date of the election is in lawful custody or the person’s freedom of movement is restricted under any written law”. Unless this section has been deleted in the Act, the encouragement by the Minister of persons in lawful custody and whose freedom of movement has been restricted to vote in the coming elections is source of electoral confusion, problems and ultimately illegal and challengeable,” Mr Chipenzi said.
“In as much as the law pronounces innocence to a detainee until proven guilty by the courts of law, leaders must learn to respect the laws they have created. In this regard, Therefore, those who are calling for the allowing of detainees and prisoners to participate in elections whilst in lawful custody and when their freedom of movement is restricted must first take recognizance of the existing laws and advocate for their amendments.”
It is now official, Zambia will miss the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
Bottom placed Kenya beat number 2 side Congo-Brazzaville 2-1 on Sunday in their penultimate Group E qualifier but that result was not enough to keep 3rd placed Zambia’s slim hopes staying in the hunt for a runners up slot.
However, the result handed Guinea Bissau’s debut africa Cup qualification and ended both Zambia and Congo’s interest in the race to Gabon.
Guinea Bissau have 10 points, four more than Congo and Zambia who stay 2nd and 3rd respectively and tied on 6 points from five matches.
Both Zambia and Congo cannot beat Burkina Faso and Liberia’s 10 point haul accumulated on Sunday in their respective penultimate group qualifiers.
Burkina Faso beat 1-0 away win over Comoros to stay second in Group D while Liberia drew 2-2 away against Togo to remain behind Group A leaders Tunisia tied on 10 points heading into September’s final group qualifier deciders.
Zambia, who host Kenya this September in a formality match, will miss the Africa Cup for the first time since 2004.
Zanaco’s eleven-match unbeaten run in the 2016 FAZ Super Division campaign has ended after suffering a 1-0 loss at Forest Rangers in Ndola on Sunday.
Forward Kobe Chipeta came off the bench to score a decisive solitary goal two minutes into the second half additional time at Trade Fair Grounds.
Chipeta, who replaced Innocent Mwaba after 52 minutes, beat Zanaco keeper Mangani Banda with a fine diving header to justify coach Patrick Phiri’s faith in him.
This Week 14 encounter was seemingly heading for a draw after both teams had wasted several chances in both halves.
Forest were the first ones to create a serious chance that saw Chibwe’s goal-bound shot stopped by keeper Banda on 10 minutes.
Zanaco a missed chance to lead when striker Fashion Sakala’s shot on target was stopped by Makasa Mufwaya after 18 minutes.
The win pushes Forest to 18 points from14 games while Zanaco have 25 points after playing 12 games.

Felix Mutati
THERE is only one MMD that which has formed a working alliance with the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) for the August general elections, Felix Mutati has charged.
Mr Mutati said the MMD, for which he was elected president on May 21st 2016 at its national convention, was the legitimate one and that no other person should masquerade as a leader of the former ruling party.
Speaking at the PF mass rally at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola yesterday, Mr Mutati said the PF/MMD alliance was going to grow stronger in the coming days following the cementing of the relationship between the two political parties.

Dr Banda Congratulates GBM
UPND vice president for politics Canisius Banda has maintained that he will not leave the party in spite of him not being picked as the party’s presidential running mate.
Dr. Banda said that the value he brings to the UPND and the rest of the Country is still relevant.
Dr. Banda said that there was a reason why he was not picked as party President Hakainde Hichilema’s running mate and that there is value in the decision that Mr. Hichilema made to settle for his administration counterpart Geoffrey Mwamba.
Dr. Banda noted that much as this decision might not be discernible by the people now, he believes that in the passage of time it will be.
Asked whether he regretted having 4 years ago turned down an offer to be a Minister in the PF government, Dr. Banda maintained that he did not regret before saying that he sacrificed himself for the sake of Mr. Hichilema and the UPND as he desired to help them form government.
Dr. Banda further said that he does not regret at all even though it appears now as if he has been slapped in the face by Mr. Hichilema.
Dr. Banda said that he thinks that each event that take place in one’s life has value and happens for a reason.
Meanwhile, the United Party for National Development (UPND) in Southern Province is happy on the adoption of Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) as running mate to party president Hakainde Hichilema (HH).
GBM, who is UPND’s vice president for administration, successfully filed in his nomination papers with the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) on Friday last week as the party’s running mate to HH.
UPND Livingstone spokesperson Neto Halwaba said his party in the entire province was humbled and grateful to HH’s decision to adopt GBM as his running mate.
Mr Halwabala said in a statement in Livingstone today that the decision to pick GBM was a fulfilment of what members wanted in the province.
“The UPND in Southern Province is humbled by our president’s decision to pick GBM as his running mate.
“As a Province, it has been our prayer and hope to have GBM as our presidential running mate,” Mr Halwabala said.
Mr Halwabala also thanked UPND vice president for politics, Canisius Banda, for being magnanimous in supporting the opposition party.
“Dr Banda has a special place for the UPND in Southern Province for looking at a bigger picture.
“His contribution to UPND cannot be ignored and we salute him as a party in Southern Province,” Mr Halwabala said.

President Edgar Lungu and his Running Mate Mrs Inonge Wina arrive at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium for a rally in Ndola
President Edgar Lungu has ordered the Zambia Police Command not to tolerate any breakdown of law and order in the Country.
President Lungu has particularly directed the Police on the Copperbelt to ensure that law and order in the Province is maintained.
President Lungu who is also ruling PF presidential candidate made the directive at Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa Stadium this afternoon during a campaign rally.
President Lungu says much as he has faith in the police chief Kakoma Kanganja , there is need for him to be on top of things in restoring law and order on the Copperbelt.
He has warned that if the police fails to bring sanity in the country, it will be chaos if the PF try to do it as they are attacked almost on a daily basis by UPND cadres.
Meanwhile, President Lungu has advised Zambians not to usher in a government that will be a try and error kind of governance.
Earlier MMD President Felix Mutati confirmed that the ruling PF and the MMD have now formally cemented a working together alliance.
Mr. Mutati says the two political parties have mutually agreed to work together because they respect each other.
Meanwhile, Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) other President Dr. Nevers Mumba has said President Edgar Lungu risks leaving a lawless and completely chaotic ‘Banana Republic’ governed by jungle law, reminiscent of other failed states in Africa and other parts of the world when he leaves office this year.
Responding to a flurry of press queries to remarks made by President Lungu at the PF Rally in Ndola on Saturday where he refered to expelled former Lunte MP Felix Mutati as MMD President, Dr. Mumba said it was extremely unfortunate that Zambia had not benefitted in anyway from having a lawyer as republican president. He said the country’s record in governance and the rule of law had deteriorated under Mr. Lungu.
He reiterated that Felix Mutati was not a member of the MMD let alone its president as he was expelled from the MMD and his expulsion upheld by the Lusaka High Court, which is part of the country’s Judiciary. Is Mr. Lungu casually ignoring this fact? In addition to this, Dr. Mumba said the people who championed the holding of the convention, were suspended Members of the Party, and had no mandate to hold the convention.
Dr. Mumba has challenged Mr. Lungu, a lawyer, to explain to the Zambian people, how he was reconciling these issues in his own mind.
Mutati recently placed an appeal against the High Court expuLsion but has since withdrawn it, therefore fully reverting to his ‘expelled’ status.

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has said that it is wrong thinking for anyone to suggest that he should be replaced as UPND president should he lose the August general elections.
Mr. Hichilema said that he was not in the UPND to get a benefit, adding that being in the UPND is not about being its President but to serve the people.
Mr. Hichilema noted that he already had a life outside politics and therefore he only came into politics to serve.
Mr. Hichilema said that what mattered to him most was what the people of Zambia wanted and that becoming Republican President does not evoke any excitement in him.
Mr. Hichilema further said that it was in fact a painful thing to be Republican President.
The UPND leader further noted that whether it was his last chance to be UPND president or not was not an issue because he has never thought it to be like that.
Mr. Hichilema however said that if it happens that the people of Zambia decide not to allow the UPND under his leadership to govern the Country, that will be the decision of the people, and it will not make him cry at all.
“Withstand him; be firm in faith [against his onset—rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined]…”
(1 Peter 5:9, AMP)
Resist Fear
The very moment you first feel fear, you have to resist it and act against it. If you make the mistake of dwelling on your fears and start thinking about all the reasons why you can’t do what God is telling you to do, then it won’t be long before you develop a negative mindset that will keep you stuck right where you are.
In the Bible, when God told David to go fight Goliath, it says that David moved quickly toward the battlefield. In other words, he didn’t think about it. He didn’t allow fear to grip his heart and talk him out of it. He just did what God wanted him to do.
So many people today are just sitting on the sidelines of life. They have tremendous potential on the inside, but they keep letting the enemy talk them out of doing what God wants them to do. Every time they get a vision of victory for their life, the enemy brings fear; and they just swallow his lies hook, line and sinker. Don’t let that be you! Instead, obey quickly. Resist fear and boldly embrace every blessing the Lord has in store for you!
A Prayer for Today
“Father, today I resist fear. I choose to receive Your love. I believe that with You, all things are possible. Thank You for giving me the power to live in victory in every area of my life in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
Guinea Bissau defeated Zambia for the first time in their history to end George Lwandamina’s sides chances of automatic 2017 Africa Cup qualification.
The 3-2 win in the two sides penultimate Group E qualifier came a year after Guinea Bissaue held Zambia to a scoreless draw in Ndola in what was Lwandamina’s first game in charge on June 13, 2015.
Zambia, 3rd on 6 points, cannot usurp leaders Guinea Bissau who lead on 10 points after Saturday’s penultimate Group E qualifier.
Lwandamina and his team must now hope that bottom placed Kenya, on 1 point, do them a favour and beat 2nd positioned Congo-Brazzaville on Sunday in Nairobi to keep alive 3rd placed Zambia’s still very slim chances of qualifying via one of the two second best teams slots up for grabs.
Zambia host Kenya this September in their final Group E qualifier.
Victory for Congo, who have 6 points with a better goal difference than Zambia, away in Nairobi will confirm the news that Chipolopolo will miss the Africa Cup for the first time since 2004.
Meanwhile, Guinea Bissau took a 2-1 lead into the break after Zezinho Lopes converted from the spot in the 13th minute after Stopilla Sunzu brought down Fredrico Mendy.
Collins Mbesuma equalised in the 25th minute before Mendy put the home side back ahead in the 36th minute.
Christopher Katongo restored parity in the 52nd minute but Guinea Bissau had the final say in stoppage time.
Silva punished Zambia courtesy of some amateur defending by Napsa Stars defender Boyd Mkandawire whose poor back-pass header landed at the wingers feet and later outpaced latter and Adrian Chama to fire in the winner.
The former famous Kitwe Anglican Church priest Richard Luonde has joined politics and is now aspiring candidate for Nchanga Constituency in Chingola on the Rainbow Party ticket.
Fr Luonde immediately declared that he had joined politics not to eat but to serve the poor people in society.
He said it was his duty as a priest to provide leadership to the poor by helping them enhance their living standards.
He said it was only in Parliament that he could help the people of Nchanga Constituency because that was where laws were made and wanted to be part of the House to be the voice of the people.
The clergyman said the former crop of parliamentarians had neglected the people on the ground and it was high time the people of Nchanga rejected them.
There was nothing strange for him to take a leading role in politics despite some people negatively criticising him that he should not do so.
Fr Luonde said that time had come for change and the electorates should consider voting for a God fearing person and someone who knew the Word so that Nchanga constituency could develop.
He said once put into office he would ensure that he worked on the roads which were in a deplorable state because the previous Member of Parliament had allegedly failed the people.
“It is unacceptable for the mining companies operating in the constituency to prefer much of the bigger contracts to people who are outside the constituency and others from foreign countries and when I am in office, I will make sure that the local contractors and suppliers benefit from the mines,’ he said.
The clergyman said during the campaign that he would concentrate on politics of development unlike other politicians who only preached the message of hate.
He said the people of Nchanga constituency needed a leader who understood their daily challenges because there were some places in the constituency which had no water and electricity.
The construction of Mufuchani Bridge cost K63 million and was funded by the World Bank.
This is the fourth big infrastructural development project which President Lungu has commissioned in a space of three months in Zambia.
Within this period, President Lungu commissioned the over K1 billion Mongu-Tapo-Kalabo Road which has a number of bridges along the Barotse flood plains and across the Zambezi river, the Sioma Bridge in Western Province and the Nakonde-Mbala Road project.
President Lungu said the new bridge will lessen the problems which the people used to face going to and from city centre.
He said the bridge will also facilitate the expansion of the city on the eastern side, trigger the construction of housing units and enhance business activities in the area.
“The absence of a permanent crossing point at Mufuchani has not only been a hindrance to the growth and development of Kitwe, but it has also posed serious social problems for our people in this area,” he said.
He said government thought it necessary to end the problems which people faced by constructing the bridge.
“I am exceedingly cheerful that today the new Mufuchani Bridge is a living testimony of the PF government’s commitment to improving people’s living standards through the provision of development of infrastructure,” he said.
President Lungu added, “Those who mock you that you cannot eat roads, tell them that here, the bridge and roads mean more than just eating but saving lives”.
Mr Lungu further said government was planning to upgrade the road from Mufuchani Bridge, which is an earth road, to bituminous standard.
The road, which is approximately 48 km long, will run from Mufuchani Bridge to join the Ndola-Mufulira road (4) and also from the bridge to join the Ndola-Kitwe dual carriageway near ZAMTAN.
“The development of this road will provide a by-pass and most direct route for travellers from Ndola to Mufulira without going through Kitwe town,” he explained.
The President has since announced that the Road Development Agency (RDA) has already awarded a contract to two Zambian engineering consulting firms to conduct techno economic studies and preparation for detailed engineering designs for upgrading the two roads.
He said the engineering consulting companies that have been identified will be announced before the end of this month.
“We do what we promise,” Mr Lungu said.
And President Lungu has condemned the vandalism which is already taking place on the new Mufuchani Bridge.
He said those involved in vandalism should be reported to the police.
Earlier, Minister of Works and Supply, Yamfwa Mukanga, said his ministry was happy with the rate of infrastructural development taking place in the country.
Mr Mukanga said in a speech ready for him by Minister of Justice, Ngosa Simbyakula, that the Patriotic Front (PF) administration has delivered on its promises in terms of infrastructural development.
And Copperbelt Province Minister Mwenya Musenge said the people in the region were grateful to government for fulfilling its promise to build the bridge across Kafue River at Mufuchani.
Mr Musenge said the fulfilment of the promises was a clear testimony that government was desirous about improving people’s lives.
Hundreds of jubilant people living around Mufuchani area turned up to witness the commissioning of the bridge
