Stakeholders urge Zambian government to expedite Konkola Copper Mines resolution

2

Calls from stakeholders in the Copperbelt Province have heightened the need for the Government to expedite the process resolving the issue of nearly dormant Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) with Good Governance activist Peter Mulenga urging the state to retain Indian investor Vedanta Mineral Resources.

CARITAS Zambia and a think tank called Sustainable Natural Resource Empowerment Initiative Limited (SuNREI) on Monday demanded that the Government provide clear updates on the pending revival of nearly dormant KCM and Mopani Copper Mines.

Mr. Mulenga said there is need for the Government to expedite the process of re-engaging Vedanta Mineral Resources on taking over the running of Konkola Copper Mines adding that the two parties must agree a win-win deal.

The Government and Vedanta are currently negotiating the disputed ownership of KCM out of court after protracted legal battles in Zambia and South Africa.

Mr. Mulenga said the Government and KCM should put the welfare of suppliers and contractors at the top of their negotiations.

He added that it was good that Vedanta Resources has shown willingness to commit to social corporate responsibility that will ensure various community programmes are supported.

“The people of Copperbelt and Zambian at large are urging the government to expedite the process of re-engaging Vedanta Resources on taking over the running of Konkola Copper Mines –KCM- and in the process negotiate a win-win situation for both parties. At the top of the negotiations, suppliers/contractors should be at the core of any deal. We do not want a situation where foreign companies will be favored more than Zambians, in fact there should be a deliberate policy for any foreign contractor to partner with a Zambia firm, what I mean by a Zambia firm is an indigenous firm with 100% Zambian ownership. It’s on record that Vedanta Resources has shown willingness to commit to social corporate responsibility that will ensure various community programs are initiated, and the government must engage the mining firm based on the promises they have made which are fair,” Mr. Mulenga said.

“Konkola Blades, Nchanga Ranger, Nampundwe football teams should be at the center of the social responsibility which should be emphasized. Any new agreement has to include all these, including road maintenance. FQML do mend roads at regular intervals in N/W province, KCM should not just come here to externalize resources. A clear policy should be put in place and there should be no sacred cows this time around. They should come back on terms that fully benefit the community and Zambia as a whole. As it stands KCM is in dire need. It is sick. It is in a grave position. You cannot continue to pretend that things are going well in KCM and Mopani. In life, it is good to swallow pride.”

“Vedanta has committed to paying KCM suppliers, specifically small suppliers owed up to $220 million according to a letter which Duggal issued; they also committed to increase salaries by 20% across the board. We should take them on, on these pledges. I am really happy that Zambian Green Party Leader Peter Sinkamba has again called upon the New Dawn to expedite the resolution of the KCM/Mopani issue. Copper price will be reaching $9000 per tonne. Every good Zambian should support the call by the Green party Leader. These are type of politicians we need in Zambia who offers proper check and balance,” Mr. Mulenga stated.

Last February, Minister of Mines Paul Kabuswe revealed conditions the New Dawn Government has given Vedanta as the London metal exchange listed-firm seeks to reclaim Konkola Copper Mines.

Mr. Kabuswe said Government has told Vedanta to pay all suppliers and contractors, to invest in mining development and to run the mine efficiently as some of the conditions.

WHISTLE STOPS AND DRIVE-BYS

By Sakwiba Sikota

Karmala Harris has just finished a historic visit back to Zambia.

She spent two days in Zambia and what was memorable and very visible was her motorcade and security detail. She also had a Zambia Police escort. The Zambian Police were truly just an escort following behind their American counterparts as evidenced by Kamala’s security detail even taking over security scrutiny and checks at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.

There was no missing that Kamala was back in town because her motorcade was nothing like we had seen in many years. The last I remember witnessing a grand and spectacular procession is when Haile Selassie paid a state visit to Zambia and we saw open carriage and horses.

I do not know if it was my imagination but I thought I heard blasting from the stereo of Kamala’s motorcade’s tail car Thin Lizzy’s 1976 hit song “The Boys Are Back in Town”.

The song opens,

“Guess who just got back today?
Them wild-eyed boys that had been away
Haven’t changed, had much to say
But man, I still think them cats are crazy
They were askin’ if you were around
How you was, where you could be found”

The chorus goes,

“The boys are back in town (the boys are back in town)
I said (the boys are back in town)
(The boys are back in town)
The boys are back in town
(The boys are back in town)”

I know some of you may say, “But Kamala is not a boy but a girl!”. That’s only because you do not support LGBTQ Rights like Kamala does. Gender neutrality and freedom is what she was bringing to Zambia. That’s why, like Thin Lizzy, I still think them cats are crazy.

You did not hear Kamala openly promote LGBTQ Rights whilst in Zambia because civil society, the opposition and churches had made it clear that such talk would drive them crazy.

Kamala had planned the trip to also show that China’s influence in Zambia is waning because, to use the words of Senate Foreign Relations Ranking Member Jim Risch who tweeted, “HH is working hard to curb China’s malign and predatory influence in Zambia and as well increase cooperation with the US.”

At the joint press conference last Friday with Kamala, HH in answer to a question about Zambia’s relationship with China run away from what Senator Jim Risch said about “curbing China’s malign and predatory influence”. This turn around came with the realization that if China sees us as a stooge of the west, China will have no reason to help us with the debt problem we have.

In fact on Monday when swearing in diplomats and judges, HH made it a point to state that he is not a stooge. He wanted to ensure that Kamala’s trip did not make the ‘stooge’ tag stick on him.

Many people were therefore left asking what was Kamala’s trip all about?

Fred M’membe the President of the Socialist Party wrote in a posting headed ‘BRIEF VISIT’ that, “…. United States Vice-President Kamala Harris is going to spend …….. 20 minutes in a [one on one] bilateral talks with President Hakainde Hichilema……

She will also spend 40 minutes at the National Assembly. In addition to this, she will spend 15 minutes at a State House press conference and 10 minutes taking photos, 5 minutes signing visitors’ book.

..[S]he will tour Panuka Farms in Chisamba for 10 minutes. Then she will have media briefing at Intercontinental Hotel at 13:00 hours. After that she leaves the country.

That’s almost all with Zambian state and government business.

The United States Vice-President has come in after the “Democracy Summit”. And her programme is very brief.

It’s difficult to ascertain what her whole visit is about.”

Fred M’membe seems to have missed some of the highlights of Kamala’s visit. For example, Kamala made a whistle stop visit to the residence her grandfather stayed at whilst he was serving as a diplomat in Zambia.

There was also the drive-by at the University Teaching Hospital where Kamala was driven round but did not stop.

These two engagements were very important and sensitive because on both occasions a huge black tinted closed van with antennas and small dishes was strategically stationed by the Americans to block out internet and cellphone communications in those areas. Soon after those whistle stop drive-bys the internet and cell phone signals were restored.

To answer and school Fred and others asking what Kamala’s visit was about, I would say that it is abundantly clear that Kamala’s trip was all about whistle stops and drive-bys.

Expert predicts poor crop performance in Western Province

6

The 2023 crop performance in Western Province is likely to decline by 50 percent given the amount of rain the region has received during this farming season.

Principal Agriculture Officer for Western Province, Rebecca Nalungwe, says a few districts that she visited have shown that there is likelihood of not getting a desirable maize harvest due to flash floods and droughts experienced in the 2022/2023 farming season.

“I have been to five districts so far. As you know Lukulu is highly productive for maize in the province but as things stand, some farmers may not have good harvest due to flash floods and droughts in some districts,” Ms Nalungwe said.

Ms Nalungwe, who is also a crop expert, said there is need for farmers to continue practicing smart agriculture in the wake of calamities such as floods and droughts being experienced in the country.

“Climate change is real and has changed the way agriculture must be done. Farmers must now start practicing smart agriculture,” she said.

She said as a stop-gap measure, the government will deliver inputs early for the next season so that farmers could plant early to avoid loss of crops due to either heavy rains or dry spells.

She has since appealed to stakeholders to continue supplementing government efforts in the provision of sustainable agricultural services across the province.

And Mongu District Agriculture Coordinator, Christabel Kakumbi, said the district is not going to be food secure because of the poor rains in this farming season.

Ms Kakumbi said a number of farmers lost their crops in January due to flash floods, adding that they will need relief food from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit for them to survive.

“Those who planted their crops early survived to a certain extent but with a dry spell in some areas, farmers will need additional food supplement from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit,” she said.

Ms Kakumbi has since assured the farming community that government will deliver inputs early for next year’s farming season so that farmers do not delay planting their crops.

“We have received funds and currently we are doing farmer registration. In the same vein, I wish to state that inputs will be delivered eerily enough for next year’s planting season,” she said.

Sean Tembo Urges President Hichilema to Suspend Mealie Meal Exports to Address Food Insecurity

8

The Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) has challenged the United Party for National Development (UPND) government to suspend mealie meal exports to neighboring countries in a bid to address the ongoing shortages and unaffordable prices of the staple food in the country.

In a press statement issued by PeP President Sean Tembo, the party called on President Hakainde Hichilema to admit that the policy of allowing mealie meal exports throughout the year is wrong and has undermined the food security of the nation. The statement further warned that if the President remains adamant on the issue, citizens may decide to protest against the continued shortages of mealie meal across the country.

The Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) has admitted the shortage of mealie meal in some parts of the country, mainly in Lusaka and Copperbelt Provinces. According to MAZ President Andrew Chintala, the shortage is due to the continued illegal smuggling of the commodity to neighboring countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania. The government has, however, assured the nation that Zambia is food secure beyond the next harvest and expects mealie meal prices to gradually reduce.

A check by some media houses in various retail outlets and mini markets in Lusaka has revealed that 25kg bags of mealie meal have completely run out with only 5kg bags in stock. Some Lusaka residents have expressed concern over the persistent shortage of the commodity and are calling on authorities to urgently address the situation.

The PeP statement further states that the continued shortages as well as unaffordable prices of mealie meal across the country are totally unacceptable and pose a risk to the nation’s security. It is, therefore, the duty of the government to take necessary steps to ensure that the local market is supplied with enough mealie meal.

PeP has urged President Hakainde Hichilema to act promptly to address the situation and suspend mealie meal exports to neighboring countries. The party has called on the people of Zambia to no longer tolerate being subjected to hunger and misery by a President who has no idea of how to run a country.

The Millers Association of Zambia has assured the public that they will put in place measures aimed at addressing the situation and ensuring price stability in the market.

Elijah Litana Cautions Chipolopolo on Last Two AFCON Dates

1

Ex-Chipolopolo dependable defender Elijah Litana has cautioned Zambia against complacency after reviving chances of qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup with two wins over Lesotho last month.

Second placed Zambia moved to nine points in Group H of the Africa Cup qualifiers after four matches played.

Litana, the three-time Africa cup star, said Zambian players must continue working hard because the race to the Africa Cup is not yet over.

“We have high chances of going to the Africa Cup. I think the players know what is at stake,” Litana said.

“Let the players keep the good performance we saw against Lesotho. Let them work hard.”

Zambia is seeking to end three successive AFCON qualification failures.

“We just need to continue pushing the players very hard. We should not relax after beating Lesotho. It is not yet over until the work is done.

Speaking to Radio Icengelo Sports by phone, Litana asked fans to continue rallying Chipolopolo

Mwape Explains Call-ups For Korea Friendlies

1

Shepolopolo Zambia Coach Bruce Mwape says he picked players on merit for the two friendly matches against South Korea to be played in Seoul.

Some soccer fans have questioned Mwape’s selection after he named his final 24-member squad for the matches against South Korea to be played on 7 and 11 April.

Mwape said his technical bench considered the performance of individual players during selection.

“I don’t think there was any problem with the selection of players. We were just looking at the performance of individual players; those who showed that they can be part of the team are the ones that we picked,” Mwape told reporters before departure for Korea on Tuesday.

“I don’t think there is any problem where selection is concerned. The players were actually picked on merit,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mwape has declared that Zambia is almost concluding preparations for the FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand in July.

“Slowly we are getting there because we have played a lot of games. We started preparing for the World Cup immediately after we qualified. We are almost concluding the final list,” he said.

Honourable Munir Zulu Arrested for Tribal Remarks Against People of Bweengwa

Independent Member of Parliament for Lumezi, Munir Zulu, has been arrested and charged for expressing hatred, ridicule or contempt towards persons because of race, tribe, place of origin or colour. The charges come after alleged utterances he made on March 28, 2023, at Longacres Police Post car park after his release from police custody.

Honourable Zulu was released on police bond pending court appearance. The arrest follows his statement that villagers from Lumezi were more intelligent than those from Bweengwa.

Last week, in response to the arrest, the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has cautioned Hon. Zulu against tribal talk. The UPND National Deputy Youth Chairman, Trevor Mwiinde, said in a statement that they had welcomed the arrest and charging of Hon. Zulu, adding that he had sunk so low into cheap tribal talk.

Mwiinde stated that the people of Bweengwa were peaceful, loving, hardworking and intelligent people, just like those found in all the 10 provinces of Zambia, including Lumezi. He further condemned the use of inflammatory language by Munir Zulu, which he described as a danger not only to him but also to the country.

“Munir is on record of having openly spoken against a particular tribe where he alleged that no one from that tribe can become Head of State. If all he has in his head is tribe than we would like to advise him that Zambia is bigger than his clan,” Mwiinde said. He called on Zambians to ignore tribalists like Munir Zulu, stating that they have the capability to bring about instability in the country.

Mwiinde also expressed disappointment in Hon. Zulu, who he described as a disgrace to the youth populace. He added that instead of being a shining example of youth leadership, Hon. Zulu had embarrassingly allowed himself to be used by selfish elements whose aim is to make the country ungovernable.

Zambians have been urged to shun tribalism and embrace unity for the sake of national development. The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that hate speech and tribalism are not tolerated in the country.

President Hichilema of Zambia Embarks on State Visit to Mozambique to Strengthen Ties and Boost Trade

8

President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia has embarked on a state visit to Mozambique, at the invitation of Mozambique’s President, His Excellency President Filipe Nyusi. The visit aims to strengthen the relationship between the two countries and increase trade and investment flows.

President Hichilema expressed his optimism for the visit, stating that Zambia looks forward to fruitful engagements and signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in key sectors of economic cooperation. The two countries have a long-standing relationship dating back to the pre-independence period when citizens from both countries joined hands in fighting for freedom.

Recently, Zambia has experienced an increase in exports and imports through the Beira Port of Mozambique into the Chanida border of the Eastern Province. This increase is particularly noticeable for commodities such as fertilizer and other agricultural produce.

During the visit, President Hichilema is expected to hold talks with his Mozambican counterpart and other key stakeholders to explore opportunities for increased trade and investment between the two countries. Both leaders are keen to deepen cooperation in various sectors, including energy, mining, and agriculture.

President Hichilema’s visit to Mozambique underscores his administration’s commitment to promoting regional integration and boosting Zambia’s economic development. The trip is expected to strengthen ties between Zambia and Mozambique and open new avenues for cooperation and partnership.

The President is expected to return to Zambia after the conclusion of his state visit to Mozambique.

Green Party Leader Urges Zambia Govt to Address Issues at KCM and Mopani Without Delay

0

Zambian Green Party Leader Peter Sinkamba has called on the government to address issues at the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and Mopani Copper Mines without any further delays. Sinkamba expressed concerns that the government’s delay in resolving challenges at the two mining firms has negatively impacted the country in many ways. He said that the government promised to find solutions before the end of the first quarter of 2023, but nothing has happened yet.

Sinkamba noted that the Copperbelt region heavily depends on the operations of KCM and Mopani for jobs and business, with 90 percent of business activities in the area being dependent directly or indirectly on the mining activities. He added that the two mining giants have seen production reduce to less than a quarter of what they used to produce some three to four years ago, resulting in a significant impact on the people. Many people have lost jobs, businesses, and property because of the direct or indirect impacts of failing to resolve the two issues.

Sinkamba emphasized that copper prices are going up, almost reaching US$9,000 per tonne, and the government should adequately resolve the issues at the two mining firms so that the country can economically benefit from this. Copper is the major foreign exchange earner, and when mining operations are not operating optimally, the kwacha is weakened.

Sinkamba appealed to the government to quickly resolve the issues surrounding KCM and Mopani without further delays. The Green Party President urged the government to take action to strengthen the kwacha and create more jobs and business opportunities for the people.

Critical shortage of Mealie Meal Hit some Parts of the Copperbelt Province, 25Kg fetching K250

12

A critical shortage of mealie meal has hit some parts of the Copperbelt Province with consumers queuing up when buying Zambia’s staple commodity.

People in selected parts of Ndola, Chililabombwe, Chingola, Kalulushi and Mufulira have complained over the inadequate supply of mealie meal coupled with hiked prices in retail shops.

People were found queuing up for a mealie meal at Pamodzi Market, Chifubu and Kawama Markets in Ndola.

In most retail shops, a 25 KG of breakfast mealie meal was fetching between K250 and K255 in Ndola’s Kawama, Chifubu and Pamodzi Townships.

Some consumers said the rise in the cost of mealie meal and inadequate supply was regrettable.

“You have seen the long lines for yourself.Mealie meal should be available and at affordable prices. We have suffered as consumers,” a consumer told reports at Pamozi Market in Ndola.

Meanwhile, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo has described the mealie meal situation in the province as a crisis.

Mr. Matambo has undertaken an impromptu visit to some of the Ndola and Luanshya based millers to ascertain the cause of the mealie-meal crisis in the Copperbelt Province.

He conducted an on the spot check of the mealie-meal situation in Luanshya at Antelope Milling Company and Ndola’s milling plants.

Mr. Matambo told millers to be transparent when offloading mealie-meal on the market and that they must do it timely.

“We undertook an impromptu visit to some of the Ndola based millers to ascertain the cause of the mealie-meal crisis in the Copperbelt Province. We warned whoever that will be found wanting smuggling mealie-meal on the Copperbelt that they will be visited by the law because mealie-meal is important for every citizen and the government will not allow unscrupulous people to continue sabotaging our food security policy. Anyone who will be found guilty of smuggling mealie-meal will have their licenses revoked and their vehicles forfeited to the state. We reiterate our position that millers must also be transparent, when offloading mealie-meal on the market and done timely,” Mr. Matambo commented.

He further warned mealie meal retailers not to be part of those sabotaging the Zambian government over the undying situation.

Mr. Matambo assured the members of the public on the Copperbelt that the Task- Force team on mealie-meal will be on the ground 24/7 to monitor and redress the mealie-meal situation in the Copperbelt Province.

“We also took time to advise the retailers not to be part of those sabotaging the Zambian government over mealie-meal in the Copperbelt Province. We appeal to all members of the public to come forward and report any suspicious vehicle or group of people smuggling mealie-meal because they are causing variations in mealie meal prices which is negatively affecting community members in affording the staple food. We further urged our millers to peg their mealie-meal prices at the right prices and their commodity must be readily available on the market all the time.”

“We want to assure the members of the public that our Task- Force team on mealie-meal will be on the ground 24/7 to monitor and redress the mealie-meal situation in the Copperbelt Province. During our tour, we found out that all millers were selling the bag of mealie- meal at K175 and K185 with capacity to produce between 2500 and 5000 bags of mealie-meal per day. We were accompanied by Ndola District Commissioner Mr Joseph Phiri, Copperbelt Province Commissioner of Police, Mr Peacewell Mweemba, officials from Zambia National Service, Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), officers from Immigration Department and other stakeholders,” Mr. Matambo said.

Rampant smuggling of mealie meal to DR Congo where consumers buy at exorbitant prices is contributing to shortages especially in border towns that include Ndola, Mufulira and Chililabombwe.

In the last two months, Police in Ndola and Mufulira alone have impounded over 3000 bags of mealie meal suspected to be destined for smuggling to DR Congo.

NRFA management was diverting K500m for road works to administrative consumption annually, charges Mutwale

8

Former National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) board chairperson, Joe Mutwale, has made serious allegations against the management of the agency, claiming that they were responsible for his dismissal. Mutwale, who was removed from his position in October last year, alleges that he was targeted by the agency’s management after he exposed illegal activities, including the diversion of over K500 million meant for road works to administrative consumption, annually.

Speaking to reporters, Mutwale expressed his relief at the appointment of a highly trained young woman to succeed him. He stated that he was delighted to see the agency being led by someone who has the intelligence and capability to take it forward.

Mutwale’s dismissal followed a vote of no confidence passed against him by the NRFA board, which accused him of unprofessional conduct and abusing his position. The board cited several governance incompetences, including Mutwale’s claiming of undue allowances and bringing the name of the agency into disrepute.

In addition, Mutwale was accused of directing management to engage in illegal activities, including the diversion of funds meant for road works to administrative expenses. The board alleged that Mutwale had failed to provide proper oversight of the agency’s finances, leading to the mismanagement of funds and the diversion of resources to unauthorized uses.

However, Mutwale maintains that he was targeted by the management of the agency because he exposed their illegal activities. He stated that his removal was an attempt to silence him and prevent him from further exposing the corruption and mismanagement within the NRFA.

The NRFA is responsible for the management and disbursement of funds for road construction and maintenance in the country. The agency plays a critical role in ensuring that the country’s roads are properly maintained and developed to support economic growth and development.

The allegations made by Mutwale raise serious concerns about the management of the agency and the misuse of public funds. The diversion of funds meant for road works to administrative expenses is a serious violation of public trust and undermines the government’s efforts to improve the country’s infrastructure.

The appointment of a new board chairperson, particularly one who is described as highly trained and capable, offers hope that the agency will be able to address the challenges it faces and improve its performance. However, it remains to be seen whether the new leadership will be able to restore public trust in the agency and ensure that funds are properly managed and used for their intended purpose.

The allegations made by Mutwale also highlight the need for greater accountability and transparency in the management of public resources. The government and other oversight bodies must take the necessary steps to investigate the allegations and hold those responsible for any wrongdoing accountable.

Lusaka High Court allows medical check-up for accused men in alleged abduction and rape case of Pamela and others

5

In a recent development in the case of the alleged abduction of Pamela Chisumpa and 12 others, the Lusaka High Court has allowed the two accused men, James Bwalya and Matthews Sikaonga, to undergo a medical check-up to determine their mental ability to stand trial. The decision was made following an application by the accused’s lawyer, Osborne Ngoma.

The two accused are facing a total of 54 counts of aggravated robbery, abduction, assault, and rape, among other charges. It is alleged in counts one to four that between June 18 and October 3, 2022, Bwalya and Sikaonga in Lusaka, while acting together with others unknown, abducted and detained Pamela Chisumpa and 12 other individuals.

During the court proceedings, Ngoma informed the court that one of the accused, Bwalya, was experiencing excruciating pain after he fell during an “activity” and sustained some back injuries. As a result, he requested the court to allow his client to undergo a medical check-up to assess his condition.

Zesco signs $3.5bn deal with China’s CiEG for renewable energy production in Zambia

Zesco, Zambia’s state-owned power utility company, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Integrated Clean Energy Power Company Ltd (CiEG), a subsidiary of China Huadian Corporation, to produce 2,400 Megawatts of renewable energy estimated at US$3.5 billion. This agreement will be rolled out in phases of 600-800MW over a 3-year period in 4 provinces beginning this year with 300mw in Southern Province and 300mw in Central Province.

China Huadian Corporation is a global energy company and the third largest electricity power producer in the world, listed on Fortune 500. CiEG is an investment development and Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) of international projects arm for China Huadian Corporation.

This sizeable foreign direct investment (FDI) from China into Zambia is a testament to the reset and enhanced relations between the two countries for mutual benefit, which dates back to the two founding fathers; Chairman Mao and Dr. Kenneth Kaunda.

According to a statement released to the media by Clayson Hamasaka, the chief Communications Specialist at State House, the investment pledge of US$3.5 billion follows an earlier investment of US$2.5 billion in 2,000mw of energy by Masdar from the United Arab Emirates. These investments signify the New Dawn’s Government’s strong resolve to achieve energy sufficiency for the domestic economy and energy surplus to enable increased exports as part of promoting export diversification and enhanced foreign currency earnings.

This power project is expected to boost Zambia’s energy capacity, which has been a critical issue in recent years, leading to power outages and supply interruptions in the country. The additional power supply will not only cater to the domestic demand but also enable Zambia to export surplus energy, which will enhance its foreign currency earnings.

The investment by China Huadian Corporation is also expected to create job opportunities for the local population, enhance economic growth, and improve the overall living standards of the people. The project will also contribute to reducing Zambia’s carbon footprint and mitigating the effects of climate change.

The successful completion of this project will be a significant milestone for Zambia, which has been grappling with energy shortages for years. The government’s resolve to attract foreign investment to the energy sector is expected to create a conducive environment for further investment in the sector, leading to enhanced energy security, economic growth, and improved living standards for the people of Zambia.

Government urges churches to prioritize safety measures following tragic boat accident in Chilubi

Government officials and church leaders have called for increased safety measures following a tragic accident in Chilubi, Zambia that claimed the lives of 14 Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) youths. The group was traveling on a banana boat from Kashitu area to Chishi Island when the boat capsized on Lake Bangweulu.

The Senga Hill Pastors Fellowship expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and called on all Christians in the country to pray for them during this difficult time. “The accident involving the SDA youths on Lake Bangweulu is not only shocking but disturbing to the nation,” said Pastor Sunday Simpasa, Chairperson of the fellowship.

He also urged church leaders to prioritize the safety of their congregants when they travel to worship away from their congregations. “Let me also appeal to government to stiffen the law on transporters found drunk or overloaded to protect the lives of people,” he added.

Northern Province Permanent Secretary Bernard Mpundu echoed the call for increased safety measures, stating that the accident could have been avoided if all safety measures were taken into consideration by the church and the transporter. “It is sad that we have continued losing lives in such circumstances,” he said.

However, Mr. Mpundu did disclose that the government had released K70,000 to help the families who lost loved ones. “Apart from meeting all the funeral expenses, the government has released K70,000. Therefore, each family will be given K5,000 just to help them during this trying period,” he said.

Seventh Day Adventist Church Northern Zambia Union Conference Executive Secretary, Emmanuel Mwewa, thanked the government for their support during the tragedy. “It would have been difficult for the church to handle the situation without the full involvement of the government hence we will always remain grateful to the government for this gesture,” he said.

The tragedy has highlighted the need for safety measures to be put in place, not just for church members but for all Zambians. “My appeal to government and the grieving families is to kneel down and pray to God to see this country through this moment,” said Pastor Simpasa.

The loss of lives in accidents that could have been avoided is a concern for the Zambian government. “Government is concerned and deeply saddened that the country has continued losing lives of people in accidents that could be avoided,” said Mr. Mpundu.

As the country mourns the loss of the SDA youths, officials and religious leaders are calling for action to be taken to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
