The Evangelical Youth Alliance International has urged FDD Leader Edith Nawakwi and Zambian Voice Executive Director Chilufya Tayali not to implicate former Republican President Rupiah Banda in the probing of suspended Director of Public Prosecutions Mutembo Nchito.

In a statement made available to QFM News today, Alliance Executive Director Moses Lungu says it is unfair that the former Head of State is being mentioned in the probing of Mr. Nchito.

Reverend Lungu states that it is also wrong for Mr. Tayali to question the integrity of Judges Silungwe and Ngulube who are members of the Tribunal appointed by President Lungu to probe Mr. Nchito saying they are composed and experienced Judges.

He says if Mr. Tayali wants to be respected by the people, he should sensor his statements and not just to attack any person just to put food on the table.

He adds that if Mr. Nchito is innocent of any wrong doings, indeed he will be free and there is no need for anybody to start panicking.

Reverend Lungu has since advised the Zambian Voice Executive Director and the FDD Leader not to implicate innocent people in the probing of Mr. Nchito saying it is not fair.

And Reverend Lungu says the decision to hold tribunal proceedings in camera should be supported by all well meaning Zambians.

Nkana humiliated at Sunset

9

Nkana suffered their worst loss of the season on Saturday after promoted Lusaka Dynamos dispatched them to a stinging defeat at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka.

Full time was met by tear gas and protesting Nkana fans who were baying for coach Beston Chambeshi’s blood.

Meanwhile, Dynamos scored all three goals in the first half after Nkana had made a false start.

Conlyde Luchanga put Dynamos ahead in the 21st minute to stun the visitors.

Veteran striker Elvis Kataya who was playing his first game for Dynamos this season after a year away from football added a first half brace to hand Dynamos a famous home win.

Kataya’s first came in the 28th minute after beating defender Maybin Chishimba on the left wing before firing the ball past Nkana goalkeeper Rabson Muchelenganga.

He put the result beyond doubt in the 38th minute from a similar angle when he beat Given Sinyangwe to send Nkana reeling on the ropes.

Nkana striker Simon Bwalya then had two great efforts saved by Dynamos goalkeeper Maybin Phiri in the 56tgh and 68th minute as Dynamos rode happily into the sunset after ending the 12-time champions six-match unbeaten run.

Zambia kick-off Cosafa Cup defence

1

Zambia on Sunday begin their quest for an unprecedented fifth Cosafa Castle Cup title when they face Namibia in a quarterfinal tie at Moruleng Stadium in South Africa.

The defending champions enter the fray of the competition in the last eight after enjoying a preliminary group stage bye.

Zambia face a Namibia side that deservedly earned its quarterfinal place after a one hundred percent run to finish top of Group A on 9 points.

The highlight of Namibia’s campaign at the ongoing tournament in South Africa saw them eliminate four-time champions Zimbabwe 4-1 in convincing fashion at the same venue last Thursday to book a date with Zambia.

Zambia coach Honour Janza said he is certainly not taking Namibia for granted.

“Namibia want to show that they are a team to reckon with. They is something at stake that they are fighting for,” Janza said.

“It is not going to be an easy game but we will ensure that we will take the game to them.

Janza has taken a strong side for the competition with goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene, defender Emmanuel Mbola, midfielders Mukuka Mulenga and Kondwani Mtonga leading a high-profile lineup for the four-time champions.

Meanwhile, Zambia have never lost to Namibia in the Cosafa Cup where they hold a record of one win and two draws against the latter.

That win was in the two sides last Cosafa Cup meeting also at the quarterfinal stage that Zambia won 1-0 in Harare thanks to a late goal from Stopilla Sunzu in November, 2009.

Winner will face victor of the quarterfinal match between Ghana and Madagascar in the semifinals on May 28 at Moruleng.

The loser will be relegated to the Plate category semifinals on May 27.

And Sunday’s game will also be the first of two between Namibia and Zambia over the coming four weeks ahead of their June 20 meeting in a 2016 CAF African Nations Championship first round, first leg qualifier in Windhoek.

Cote d’Ivoire football federation president Sidy Diallo has confirmed that national team coach Herve Renard has vacated his position.

Renard, 46, arrived in the country on Thursday and held talks with the football body, essentially to determine his release clause estimated to be around €400,000.

Renard, who led the Elephants to their second Africa Cup of Nations title early this year in Equatorial Guinea, had 18 months left on his contract.

Reports in France suggest that he is on the verge of joining Ligue 1 side Lille, who confirmed the departure of Rene Girard this week.

His assistant Patrice Beaumelle – who also worked with him when he won the Afcon title with Zambia – will also leave his post with Cote d’Ivoire.

Renard had earlier condemned a financial scandal involving bonuses for the Ivorian team following their Afcon victory, which local authorities confirmed were partially stolen.

“After waiting for an Afcon trophy all these years, it is a pity that those who worked for the recent victory can’t get their reward,” Renard said.

No-show Evans Kangwa disappoints Janza

5

Honour Janza is disappointed with no-show striker Evans Kangwa for Zambia’s 2015 Cosafa Cup outing.

Kangwa was a no-show in camp on Thursday in Johannesburg but his clubmate from Israeli club Hapoel Ra’anana Emmanuel Mbola did report to camp ahead of Sunday’s quarterfinal clash against Namibia in Rustenburg.

“It is unfortunate that Evans didn’t come despite being called for national duty,” Janza said.

“It is not good character for a player. You have to respect national duties. Have a passion for your country.”

Kangwa reportedly stayed behind to try and attend to a contractual issue following the expiry of his 12-month loan stint Ra’anana from Nkana.

TANZANIA apologises to Zambia for accidents caused by its truck drivers.

16

Director of Transport from Surface and Regulatory Authority of Tanzania Leo John Ngowi apologized to the Zambian government for the accidents caused by Tanzanian registered trucks and that there is need to find a lasting solution to the problem.

Zambia Police Service Traffic section in a report recorded about 227 road traffic accidents caused by Tanzanian truck drivers between January 1, 2015 and May 19, 2015.

Out of the 227 accidents 37 were fatal in which 42 lives were lost while 42 were serious with 51 slightly serious of which 59 persons were slightly injured and 133 involved damage to vehicle or property.

The report says the major causes of these accidents are excess speed, obstruction, fatigue which leads to wrong parking and that poses a danger to other motorists and that the worst is the running away of drivers after causing an accident.

And the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) says its government’s role to remove obstacles that cause congestion at border posts such as poor road infrastructure.

RTSA Chief Executive Director Zindaba Soko said this during the bilateral road transport meeting between Zambia and Tanzania in Ndola on Wednesday.

Mr. Soko said the state of the road infrastructure in any country plays a key role in promoting the smooth flow of trade and people.

“With regards to border processes, Zambia has made significant strides at implementing the One Stop Border Post (OSBP) at Nakonde/Tunduma border post. The OSBP infrastructure at Nakonde/Tunduma border on the Zambian side is complete and operational,” he said.

Mr. Soko urged Tanzania to expedite efforts to set up the like infrastructure on the Tanzanian side so that the OSBP could become fully operational.

He said it was Zambia’s hope that other countries both in the SADC and COMESA regions could adopt the concept on all corridors in order to enhance efficiency in the clearing of goods and passengers at border posts.

“There are obvious gains to be achieved by reducing the amount of time that vehicles (both freight and passengers) spend at the border, one of them being the reduction in the cost of doing business as operators will be able to make more trips than they are making at present,” he said.

Mr Soko stressed the need for operators to adhere to traffic rules so as to prevent needless losses of life due to reckless, careless or dangerous driving.

Japan pledges support of US$30 million

5

The Japanese Government has pledged to pump in US$30 million this year in the agriculture, education and health sectors.

Japan’s Ambassador to Zambia Koishi Koinuma says he is happy with Zambia’s government economic policies.
Mr. Koinuma was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Nkeyema district in Western Province shortly after touring the US$ 6.3 million Japanese run agro-farm, Rosewood plant by Japan Tobacco International (JTI).

Mr. Koinuma disclosed that his government will consider increasing funding to Zambia next year.

He said his government is assisting farmers to grow tobacco in Nkeyema and Kaoma districts as well as a rice plantation at Namushakende in Mongu.

JTI is also supporting small scale farmers to grow tobacco in Chipata in Eastern province.

He expressed gratitude that JTI is making a real difference in the lives of the people in western province.

“I am proud of the work that JTI is doing in the community and that of being a partner to the Zambian government in contributing to the national development objectives,” the Japanese envoy said.

Mr. Koinuma is further happy that JTI has created jobs to the local people not only in Western Province but the rest of the nine provinces as well.

He was accompanied to Western Province by Second Secretary Mr. Hiroyasu Kirioka and JTI Director of Operations in Zambia Mike Roach, JTI Leaf Production Manager Lars Gruner and other senior officials.

And The Japan Tobacco International (JTI), which is an agro-company in Zambia, has through its afforestation project planted one million trees in Nkeyema district in Western province.

JTI Director of Operations in Zambia Mike Roach said his organization was extremely concerned with the rate of deforestation in the country.

Mr. Roach observed that tobacco growing also diminishes the natural resources such as trees during curing stage hence JTI decided to plant more trees.

In a press statement released to ZANIS yesterday, Mr. Roach said the trees will be planted in Kangologolo and TBZ areas in Nkeyema district.

He said that the main aim of the afforestation project was to ensure that JTI farmers use their own planted trees to cure tobacco by 2018.

“In our afforestation project, one million trees have been planted by JTI farmers in order to replenish trees that are being used in curing tobacco,” he said.

Mr. Roach further disclosed that a similar project will be embarked on in Chipata district in Eastern province where JTI is also supporting small scale farmers in growing barley tobacco.

He has since commended the Zambian government for collaborating with JTI in order to help the local farmers who support their business.

“The collaboration between the government, JTI and the local people we serve allows us collectively to respond to the needs of the people who support our business,” Mr. Roach said.

And JTI Leaf Production Manager Lars Gruner disclosed that the afforestation project will help to save trees by using less firewood when curing tobacco.

Mr. Gruner said the curing process requires 30 kilograms of firewood in the kilning barn programme hence the afforestation project.

He said the afforestation was a long-term project which is aimed at changing the mindset of small scale tobacco farmers.

PF in Kasama expels five councillors

12

The ruling Patriotic Front-PF in Kasama district has with immediate effect expelled five councillors for alleged misconduct.

Provincial Vice Chairperson Peter Mwansa confirmed the development to ZANIS in Kasama yesterday.

Mr. Mwansa said the five councillors have for a long time aligned themselves to some opposition political parties, making their continued stay in the PF a mockery.

He named the expelled councillors as Evarist Chellah of Bululu ward, Fidelis Chishoma of Lukulu ward and Rose Chilufya of Chiba ward.

Others are Abraham Mulenga of Mulilansolo ward and Mutale Chibeka of Mukanga ward.

The expelled members are said to have aligned themselves with the UPND and Rainbow parties in Kasama.

Mr. Mwansa further added that the PF has since written to Kasama Municipal Council advising that the expelled councillors must not be entertained in the council as representatives of the party.

He has also called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia to declare the seats of the five councillors vacant.

Corrupt accountants embarrassing the profession-Beene

3

The Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA) has expressed fear that corrupt practices among Accountants would dent the good image of the profession if not stopped.

ZICA president Wesley Beene said Zambia cannot win the fight against corruption if accountants are corrupt.

Mr. Beene said in an effort to end corruption among accountants, ZICA has joined hands with government to ensure that graduating students abide by their professional ethics.

He was speaking in Lusaka today during the eighth ZICA graduation ceremony held at Government Complex.

He disclosed that ZICA was ready to protect and support the public interest disclosure (Protection of Whistle blowers) Act number four of 2010 where information from individuals and corporate bodies is kept confidential.

Mr. Beene has since implored graduating graduates to observe the ethics of the accountancy profession in accordance with their calling to serve the Zambian people.

And speaking earlier, ZICA Chief Executive Officer Kabeta Hapenga disclosed that ZICA has established a whistle blower protection fund.

Mr. Hapenga has meanwhile challenged the graduates to transform and defend the accountancy profession.

Those who graduated include 81 students who have completed ZICA professional level, 371 at licentiate level while 640 students completed the accounting technician level and four students graduated in taxation.

Esther fight ends on controversial note

27

Esther Phiri’s second match since returning to the ring last December ended on a controversial note on Friday night at Government Complex in Lusaka.

The fight was halted in the 3rd round after Esther’s opponent Sandra Almeida suffered a deep cut on her left temple in a fight that fell short on quality before a third round flurry.

The South African bled profusely as she returned to her corner after the third round and it took at least six minutes for her cutman to stem the flow of blood.

However, the judges had by that time come to decision and called it a technical draw, something that also Esther did not agree with as as technical knockout was a more legitimate outcome.

Meanwhile, Almeida insisted the fight should have continued.

“I have the best cutman and believe I could have still go on,” Almeida said.

A rematch has been mooted in the next two months.

PF accuse HH of being a cheap political opportunist on Civil Servant Salaries

HH CANNOT CONTINUE BEHAVING LIKE A POLITICAL “BEN 10” – BY SUNDAY CHILUFYA CHANDA, VICE CHAIRPERSON, PF MEDIA AND PUBLICITY COMMITTEE

Lusaka, Zambia, 22nd May 2015 – UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema is a cheap and shameless opportunist. Zambians recall that after HH heard of Government’s decision to release the final draft constitution on the eve of the 24th October 2014 Independence Day Celebrations, he shamelessly rushed to the media on 22nd October 2014 to “direct” Government to release the final draft constitution as part of the Independence celebrations. Not only was this perceived as childish propaganda but highly opportunist for a man desperately seeking the highest office of the land.

Today, HH has gone back to his cheap opportunist by rushing to the media to demand that civil servants get paid when he knew too well that Secretary to the Treasury and Ministry of Finance were on top of things and Civil servants had started receiving their salaries earlier in the day.

HH must be reminded that it will be very difficult for the working class to trust him and his cheap sugarcoated hoodwinking schemes. He has no history of standing with the working class. He has always sided with capital. He is a mouthpiece and friend of capital. It is only in Zambia where a Bourgeois Opposition leader masquerades as a friend of the workers. History says that by his own free will and for the love of capital, thousands of workers languished in poverty as a consequence of his administered privatization.

Further, we are calling on HH to apologize to the working class and the labour movement in Zambia for his part in the notorious privatization and the pain and injury Zambian workers were subjected to. In case he has forgotten, privatization in the manner it was administered injured Zambian workers irreparably after thousands were thrown on the streets.

Lastly, we advise HH to quit his opportunistic tendencies because civil servants and the working class in general are smart enough to read through his cheap politicking. HH cannot continue behaving like a political Ben 10. Governance is not for the Ben 10 politicians, its serious business and President Edgar Lungu takes his job very seriously.

Finance has released K584 Million for salaries for civil servants.

In a statement released by Ministry of Finance public relations officer Chileshe Kandeta government says consistent with it’s objective of strengthening cash and treasury management, all civil servants salaries are on the Direct-Debit and Credit Clearing [DDAC] System.

This entails the receipt of salaries by civil servants within 24 hours of release by the Treasury, in accordance with the terms of reference and stipulations given to various commercial banks through which civil servants get their salaries.

“In this regard, the Treasury expects that all workers should get their salaries with minimal delays from commercial banks,” said Kandeta.

May salaries for civil servants were at least delayed by three days. The delay unsettled some civil servants who took to social media to express their displeasure at the development.

This morning UPND president Hakainde Hichilema called on the government to immediately pay the workers.
A check this evening by Lusaka Times revealed that most civilian servants are now accessing their salaries.
