Levy Mwanawasa family endorse Edgar Lungu

THE family of late former President Levy Mwanawasa has endorsed the candidature of Patriotic Front (PF) president Edgar Lungu in the forthcoming presidential election.

Family spokesperson Miriam Mwanawasa, who is a daughter of late President Mwanawasa, said the family has decided to back Mr Lungu as he has leadership qualities which are a virtue for law and order.

“As a family, we have recognised the leadership qualities and trust that President Sata saw in him. Honourable Edgar Lungu is a lawyer like our late President Mwanawasa and we are confident that this will be a good virtue for law and order,” she said.

This is according to a statement released by Ms Mwanawasa in Lusaka yesterday.

Ms Mwanawasa said the family is also supporting the PF due to the good relationship and honour that the late President Sata bestowed on the Mwanawasa name and legacy.

“Zambians will remember that when President Sata fell ill in 2008, it took the personal intervention of President Mwanawasa to save his life. Mr Sata was evacuated from CFB Hospital to Milpark in South Africa.

“Although the two were political adversaries, this episode brought them together,” she said.

Ms Mwanawasa said the family is happy that Mr Sata’s administration named the Ndola stadium after Dr Mwanawasa.

“He also named the new Lusaka district hospital after President Mwanawasa. As a family, we have decided to accept this honour by ensuring the legacy of President Sata lives on, too,” she said.

Ms Mwanawasa said the family is also endorsing Mr Lungu due to the numerous development projects embarked on by the PF administration.

“We recognise initiatives like the Link Zambia 8000, Pave Zambia 2000 and the massive infrastructure development of schools, universities, clinics and hospitals.
Therefore, we urge Zambians to support Mr Lungu, whom the party has chosen,” she said.

UPND rallies in the Copperbelt in Pictures

UPND Presidential candidate Mr Hakainde Hichilema continued with his tour of the Copperbelt. Yesterday he first attended Kitwe’s New Apostolic Faith Central Church in the morning where he asked God to give him the wisdom to lead the people of Zambia forward.

The campaign then moved on to Chililabombwe where Mr Hichilema and his entourage had intended to visit the market but arrived to find crowds and crowds of people who were calling for him to address them. A rally was soon underway and Mr Hichilema told the crowd that the missing ingredient which has stopped them benefitting from the great wealth of natural resource in the Copperbelt is good quality leadership, which he and his team are offering to Zambians on 20 January 2015. He said ‘it is unforgivable that people still go the bed hungry in a country as rich as ours’.

Crowds in Mufulira welcomed him in the afternoon for another rally, before the last rally of the day was held in Ndola even as the light began to fade.

Mr Hichilema questioned why the PF was suddenly making all these promises now when they had already had three years in government with which to make changes but had shown little interest in doing so to date. At the same time, having so many ministers and deputy ministers, members of Mr Hichilema’s entourage said they would have expected the government to have got a lot more done in order to justify their huge cost to the country.

Mr Hichilema said Zambians were still yet to have a government that both fully recognised the potential of the Copperbelt region and knew how to manage its wealth so that the people benefit properly. He said that his team would focus on better economic management so that growth would lead to more revenues and jobs. He also committed to forming an open government so that people could see how the revenues from mining operations are being spent.

Mr Hichilema said there still remain serious problems regarding the rights of employees and labour relations, as well as fundamental issues such as sanitation and health. In these matters Mr Hichilema said government has an obligation to its people that it must take seriously, and not just at election time.

Mr Hichilema also pledged support for Zambian businesses to help them become contractors and suppliers for mines and other industry, and he spoke of the importance of fair procurement procedures so that contractors are always selected based on best value and never relationships or connections.
Today UPND Presidential candidate Mr Hakainde Hichilema held rallies in Klulushi and Lufwanyama districts.

Zesco United and Power Dynamos’ CAF opponents named

4

Zesco United will face Swazi opposition in the 2015 CAF Champions League while Power Dynamos battle a Sudanese opponent in the Confederation Cup next year.

Zesco coach George Lwandamina will be consulting the Nkana bench this week after they were drawn to play Mbabane Swallows in the preliminary round of the Champions League.

This is the second successive time that Swallows will play a Zambian club after giving Nkana a scare at the same stage of the competition this year.

Swallows beat Nkana 2-0 in Swaziland before losing 5-2 in Kitwe.

Zesco will be away in the first leg during the weekend of February 13 and later host Swallows on February 28 in Ndola.

Winner over both legs will play either Sewe Sport of Cote d’Ivoire or AS Kaloum of Guinea in the first round in mid-March.

Meanwhile, Power are also away in their preliminary round fixture when they place Al Khartoum SC on February 13.

They will host Kwesi Appiah’s team in the final leg on February 28 in Kitwe.

The winner over both legs will play either Polisi of Zanzibar or Gabonese club CF Mounana in the first round in March.

Chilombo: CAF U20 Cup draw is tough

0

Zambia Under-20 coach Hector Chilombo has described as tough the draw for the 2015 African Youth Championship that saw his team paired with South Africa, Ghana and Mali.

Chilombo’s side will kickoff the Senegal CAF Junior Championship on March 9 against Mali before facing Ghana four days later and will tackle South Africa on March 15.

He said Zambian needs to prepare well for the youth tournament.

“It is a tough draw and we need to prepare well for the tournament. We need to play high profile friendlies,” Chilombo said.

He, however, said Zambia will excel at the tournment and qualify for the World Cup.

“With proper preparations we will perform wonders. We want to reach the semifinals so that we can qualify to the World Cup,” Chilombo said.
He added:”It is good we know our opponents.”

Zambia returns to the under-20 Africa Cup for the first time since 2007.

ZANIS was obliged to cover Edgar Lungu at no cost because of Guy Scotts presence – Katema

Chief government spokesperson Joseph Katema has dismissed the Electoral commission of Zambia’s statement in which the ECZ strongly condemned ZANIS for disregarding the ECZ instructions not to mount their public address equipment during PF President Edgar Lungu’s filing in of nominations yesterday.

ECZ Public Relations Manager Chris Akufuna has told Journalists in Lusaka today that the fact that Acting Republican President Guy Scott was part of the PF delegation does not mean ZANIS should use the equipment.Mr. Akufuna said that the move by ZANIS to mount public address equipment at the Supreme Court grounds yesterday gave the PF advantage over other candidates. He said that ZANIS should have provided the same service to all political parties and not just do it for the ruling party.

However Chief government spokesperson Joseph Katema said ZANIS acted in accordance with its mandate of providing communication support to Government officials, at no cost, and acted within the law.He said the Acting President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr. Guy Scott, was in the delegation of the presidential candidate, Hon. Lungu and as such ZANIS was obliged to provide the services that were provided.
Before reconciling with Edgar Lungu, Acting President Guy Scott in a letter to the media pledged not allow abuse of public resources for partisan interests.

Below is the PF Governments press statement

Government would like to correct the impression created that the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) favoured the Patriotic Front presidential candidate, Hon. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, MP, when they provided public address system during the filing of his nomination papers on Saturday, 20th December, 2014.
Government notes with concern the statement issued by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) alleging that ZANIS should not have provided the public address system to Hon. Lungu because they did not do so to the other candidates.
I wish to place it on record that ZANIS acted in accordance with its mandate of providing communication support to Government officials, at no cost, and acted within the law.
You may wish to note that His Excellency the Acting President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr. Guy Scott, was in the delegation of the presidential candidate, Hon. Lungu and as such ZANIS was obliged to provide the services that were provided.

The Electoral (Code of Conduct) Regulations of 2011, Statutory Instrument No. 52 of 2011, authorizes a person serving as President or Vice President to use such facilities in connection with their respective offices.
The assertion that ZANIS disadvantaged other candidates by providing the Public Address System is unfortunate. ZANIS is expected to provide its facilities to any meeting, which His Excellency the Acting President Dr. Guy Scott is expected to attend.

UPND Campaign Manager Dipak Patel accuse PF of serious breach of the electoral code

48

In light of the events of yesterday’s Patriotic Front Rally in Kabwe, it is now clear that a serious breach of the electoral code of conduct has occurred.

Acting President Dr Guy Lindsay Scott presented himself as what this country needed in the transitional period; he swore to uphold the rule of law, uphold the electoral code of conduct and to maintain the democratic principles of Zambia. Many had high hopes for his conduct, none more so than myself.

However, since his purported reconciliation with Hon. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, serious questions need to be raised about the credibility of the Acting President’s ability to uphold the electoral code of conduct, given that he is now an active member of the PF campaign team.

Acting President Scott’s statements clearly never evolved into anything tangible, the events that occurred at yesterdays rally prove that a grave injustice has occurred. It is now common knowledge that a certain Bishop, under the guidance of certain ministers and Acting President Scott clearly violated the electoral code of conduct in their defamatory statements about our Candidate.

The aforementioned statements have been widely reported now and comments of this nature clearly indicate that the ruling party fears the momentum of the UPND campaign for a United Zambia. The PF forget that they have failed this country over the past 3 years, lies and defamatory statements do not need to come from our camp, merely revealing the truth of the injustices committed by this PF government, is a weapon we have left in reserve in our campaign arsenal.

So far the UPND has run a positive campaign, based on policy and messaging, with a strict discipline covering our members from the highest positions of authority to the grassroots, to avoid violation of the electoral code of conduct.

We in the UPND had high hopes for a clean election process, one that would end with a fair result and in turn reflect the will and aspirations of the Zambian people. The ruling party has proved yesterday that they have no such desire and we in the UPND are now ready to act.

Signed,

Dipak Patel
Campaign Manager of the UPND

Edgar Lungu is Sixth President, HH is in for Another Rude Shock!

EDGAR LUNGU IS SIXTH PRESIDENT, HH IN FOR ANOTHER RUDE SHOCK!

As ZRP, having politically analyzed the political atmosphere in the country, we strongly believe that Edgar Lungu is the sixth Zambian President whether people agree or not.

It’s very simple to tell, Edgar and PF will lead in Luapula, Copperbelt, Lusaka, Eastern, Central, Muchinga and Northern Provinces and come second in Western and Southern provinces.

While Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND will lead in Southern, North Western and I think in Western province, this cannot make him win the elections no matter what.

This is so because Edgar Lungu, as an individual is the darling of the masses because they believe that he is late President Sata’s anointed and he also performed well in all portifolios that he has held.

If the truth has to be said, Edgar Lungu has performed his duties with distinction in all the ministries he held and people saw that. Besides that, despite being a top lawyer and highly educated, he has been level headed to an extent that he mixes with anyone irrespective of their class. Further, he also proved over the years that he is a true patriotic Zambian who is so passionate about his country.

In addition to that, he is also surrounded by a lot of political heavy weights such as Chishimba Kambwili, Alexander Chikwanda, Emmanuel Mwamba,Brian Hapunda, Inonge Wina, Jean kapata, Davis Chama, GBM and Given Lunda among others with national appeal.

Unlike in the case of HH who has most political heavy weights with regional appeal, if you like.
Please forget about names like former first lady Moureen Mwanawasa, Dr VJ Mwaanga and them who have just joined him. Most of these people cannot even win an election as councillor in any constituency to say the least. May be people like Katele Kalumba and Hon. Munkombwe.

So as ZRP we feel duty bound to give our honest political analysis to the Nation. We believe FDD will do well than in the previous election and so is Nevers Mumba as an individual, but not to the point of winning the elections.

Wright Musoma
ZRP President.

Forum for Democratic Alternatives leader (FDA), Rodwig Sondashi, says he will re- introduce the Barotse Land agreement of 1964 once elected president of the Republic of Zambia.

Dr Sondashi stated that immediately his party becomes government, it will engage the Litunga and his Kuta as well as the people of Barotse Land to discuss the way forward with regard to the agreement.

He was speaking during a public rally held at Mulambwa grounds in Mongu on Sunday.
Dr Sondashi promised to release the Linyungandambo people who were arrested over the Barotse Land agreement from prison.

Dr. Sondashi further explained that he will improve the Sondashi Formula 2000 (SF 2000) drug for curing HIV/AIDS and give it to patients free of charge to Zambians in order to eradicate the pandemic.

He said it was sad that the inaction by government has resulted in into many losses of lives in the country since the year 2000 when the medicine was founded.

Dr Sondashi was in Mongu district to seek votes ahead of the January 20, 2015 Presidential by elections following the death of President Michael Sata.

New ZCTU president to únite’ unions

ZCTU President Nkole Chishimba
ZCTU President Nkole Chishimba

Newly elected Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Nkole Chishimba says his vision is to unite labour unions in the country.

ZANIS reports that Mr. Chishimba said the strength of the union lays in unity and adequate knowledge among members in order to effectively push the agenda of the Zambian workers forward.

He said he will stick to the objectives which are enshrined in the ZCTU constitution by not favouring anyone including affiliate members of the congress.

“I will treat all unions fairly and ensure that we move in one direction unlike the way it was before when members allegedly cited favouritism,” he said.

Mr. Chishimba, who is also Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) president, said he will work at enhancing worker education because if workers are enlightened, they will know their rights and interpret them accordingly.

He won the presidency after beating Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union (CSAWUZ) leader Davies Chiyobe during the elective ZCTU general congress held at the weekend in Livingstone.

Mr. Chishimba polled 193 votes against Mr. Chiyobe’s 99 votes in the election results that were announced yesterday.

He takes over from Mr. Leonard Hikaumba, who together with his secretary general, Roy Mwaba did not recontest their positions.

Mutati urges fellow MMD MPs to swallow their pride and Join UPND

Felix Mutati Kasama

FELIX Mutati says MMD Members of Parliament should swallow their pride and join the winning team of UPND.

And UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema has bragged that he is the only man with the skills to solve the problems of Zambia.

Speaking during a Public rally in Mufulira Mutati who is in the UPND campaign team said there is nothing in the MMD that people should look for.

“Am asking all the MMD Members of Parliament to come and join the winning team. We need to work together to transform the economy of this country. To create jobs for the Zambian people because we know how the people are suffering,” Mutati said.

Hichilema who made numerous promises said he has the skills to transform the country.

“I have the skills to solve problems. I will ensure that the mines benefit the Zambian people,” he claimed.

Among others that attended the rally included ADD president Charles Milupi, former Finance minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, Patrick Mucheleka and former first lady Maureen Mwanawasa.

However, Movement for Multi party Democracy (MMD) President Nevers Mumba has appealed to all party members to remain focused and embrace unity.

Dr. Mumba says he has hope and trust that the members have the potential to turn around the negative things and forge ahead.

Dr. Mumba explains that he has been working tirelessly to ensure that every member of the party understands the vision of the party and see to that everyone has the responsibility to help shape the vision of the party.

He says the party is doing so to answer the demands of the majority Zambians who want a party that will listen to their cries and address their challenges.

Dr. Mumba states that it is in this regard that the focus should be collectively on unity than answer back to individuals who only want to distract the efforts of others.

Miles Sampa says he is likely to form his own party

Matero MP Miles Sampa (r) dresses Vice President Dr. Guy Scott (l) a PF scarf on arrival at Kaoma air strip to drum up support ahead of the forthcoming Mangango August 19 2014, Parliamentary bye elections in Kaoma District, Western Province,

Matero Member of Parliament, Miles Sampa has disclosed that he is likely to form a party and will announce his position in the next two days.

Sampa who was on Sunday in Kasama to consult with Paramount Chief Chitimukulu, said he refused to attend the Press Conference that was called by Acting President Dr. Guy Scott and PF President Edgar Lungu.

Sampa said he was aggrieved that fundamental issues according to him, were not attended to.

He said he had various options before him that included formation of a political party or reconciliation.

He also hinted that he might form his own party and carry officials to build a party that will contest the 2016 elections.

But he has alleged that no genuine reconciliation had taken place.
Addressing party officials in Kasama, Sampa disclosed that he had a three-hour meeting with Mwine Lubemba, Paramount Chief Chitimukulu on Sunday on 21st December 2014.

But Mwine Lubemba, Paramount Chief Chitimukulu is said to have snubbed the proposal to solicit his help for a formation of the party or the request to support any other.

And former Deputy Secretary General Anthony Kasolo has attacked the General Conference that elected Edgar Lungu as Party President. He claimed that it was a sham since the election was done “by show of hands”.

“Ifyongo mwaumfwile ku Lusaka, amapepala yale mibepa ubufi. Pantu ta batu bweseshe ifi puna. Bushe icilonganino chatushilile bashikulu, General Conference yesu bushye ku imya amaboko? [The noise you heard from Lusaka, newspapers were feeding you on lies] because they didn’t give us back our positions. This [PF] organisation was left to us by our grandfather,” Kasolo said while Sampa was heckling and shouting “kwati mashilu [as if they are lunatics]”.

Kasolo also accused the media of peddling lies and said they would never give up on their cause.

Kasolo also lamented that the reconciliation that was brokered by the Church was meaningless since his position of Deputy Secretary General and that of former Secretary General Bridget Attanga were not restored.

He claimed that when he founded the PF with his “grandfather”, the values being pr active were alien to the party.

“Ubu chenjenshi bwa nkonko, Pungwa tasakamana…[An eagle is never bothered by a chicken’s tricks]”

In an 18 minutes and 42 seconds public recording made available, Miles Sampa has accused the Edgar Lungu camp of punishing his supporters in the party

He said that the PF did not belong to anyone.

“ twa iminine ten (10). Ilyo twabwelele ku Lusaka, natile ati ukuchila icipani cifwe, natu balekele’’. [ We stood 10. When we got back to Lusaka, I said let’s leave them rather than let the party die]

He said the reconciliation was false because it was just a cosmetic show for television and the rest of the media while the party structures allegedly remained divided.

He said as far as he was concerned and before negotiations could conclude, a press conference was held prematurely.

He feared that his supporters were being sidelined and punished for supporting him. He said his supporters in Mazabuka, Mongu and Chipata were being punished.

He said his officials in Chipata were given suspension letters.

“Ine icilenkalipa cha kweba ati abanensu na bakwatako ubuchenjeshi”.[ What hurts me is that our colleagues are not honest]

He alleged that officials that supported him were being replaced by people from the so called parallel structures.

He said he has been consulting the Church, Bishops and other stakeholders and felt that time had come to consult traditional authorities and make his own decision.

He said whatever position he takes whether it was reconciliation or formation of his own political party, he would state the position on his own.

He insisted that he was his own spokesperson and did not need any other person to speak for him.

And supporters told Sampa that they would “follow” whatever position he will take.

Sampa said he will hold a press conference soon and state the country his position.

Don’t trust these MPs joining UPND, they are just opportunist-MMD Copperbelt Spokesperson

23

Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Copperbelt Spokesperson Peter Phiri says members of Parliament that have joined the UPND campaign team are opportunists that should not be trusted.

And Phiri said people that alleged that MMD president Nevers Mumba will mortgage the party have been shamed.

In an interview, Phiri vowed that the MMD will participate in any Presidential and Parliamentary elections because it is still strong on the ground.

” The MMD is not a shop or regional party that can fail to participate in any election. We are shocked that opportunists wanted to benefit from Rupiah Banda’s corrupted money.

MMD under Nevers Mumba is winning the Presidential by-elections whatever it takes,” he said.

He said some parties are regional while the PF has neglected the people through their violent conduct hence making the MMD a favorite party for the people.

” In-fact Dr Scott is right to leave the PF campaign team because of violence. It is only the MMD that has exhibited high levels of maturity in this election,” he said.

Phiri said the new MMD is determined to ensure that it returns to government.

He further said opportunists should not be allowed to continue in the politics of Zambia.

Nevers Mumba Restarts His Race For Plot One

Movement for Multiparty Democracy Presidential candidate Dr. Nevers Sekwila Mumba on Sunday 21st December 2014 continued from where he had left off in his bid for Plot One by holding a campaign rally in Kasama. He was accompanied by several top members of the MMD leadership.

In his company were Acting National Secretary Honorable Mwansa Mbulakulima, Acting Vice-National Secretary Ms Winnie Zaloumis, Trustee Dr. Peter Machungwa, National Youth Chairman and Muchinga Member of Parliament Honorable Howard Kunda, Acting Treasurer Mrs. Elizabeth Chitika Molobeka and the entire Northern Province Executive Leadership as well as members from the Muchinga Provincial leadership.

Dr. Mumba spelled out his vision for a new Zambia in which Education will be the key focus to enable Zambia to be an equal among the developed nations of the world. His vision was differentiated from others who talk about free education without linking it to anything. Dr. Mumba’s spelled out his vision of creating a pool of educated Zambian technocrats who will help create Zambia into a Centre of Excellence in various fields.

One of the speakers at the rally was Mr. Kamuti, MMD Chairman for Transport and Communications who had travelled all night from Mongu, Western Province (where he is based) to come and witness the Nomination of MMD Presidential candidate Dr Mumba. After Dr Mumba had successfully lodged in his papers, he was so moved that he decided to accompany the campaign team to Kasama.

At the rally, he said that those Lozis who have decided to work with UPND have forgotten how Sakwiba Sikota, then Vice-President to the late Anderson Mazoka and other leaders of different tribes, were unceremoniously thrown out of a convention that elected Hakainde Hichilema as president of UPND.

He said in MMD, he as a Lozi has found full acceptance from the MMD leadership, especially Dr. Mumba whom he finds extremely accommodating of all tribes. He called on all Lozis to trust Nevers Mumba as he is an honest person who shall not crook them as others have done.

The message from Ms Zaloumis was that as a Tonga woman born in Macha in Choma, she has come to trust Dr. Mumba as she has felt accepted and respected. She has called on the people of Northern Province to give Dr. Mumba a resounding vote.

Speaking towards the end of the campaign rally, Dr. Machungwa informed the rally that he was in Parliament when Dr. Mumba was Republican Vice-President and head of Government in Parliament during late President Levy Mwanawasa’s reign and was always struck by the eloquence, intelligence, expertise and smart disposition with which he led deliberations in the House.

He has no doubt that armed with this experience and that acquired as a Diplomat in a developed nation like Canada, Zambia will have a President in Dr Mumba to be proud of, who will once again clean the disgraced image of Zambia; who will articulate issues intelligently in global meetings and will never bring embarrassment to the nation as has been the case in the past.

Earlier in the day, Dr Mumba preached at Victory Bible Church and also paid a courtesy call on Chief Chitimukulu Henry Kanyanta Sosala with whom he had warm cordial talks.
