Sunderland coach Martin O’Neil has indicted that Stopilla Sunzu might join in them in summer.
Sunzu is currently in England as the tale of his roller-coaster transfer saga continues to make headlines.
However, the 2012 Africa Cup winners’ trial at the club has been hit by injury and O’Neil is looking to monitor his performance when he recovers and travels for Zambia’s trip to Lesotho on March 24.
“He played a little game the other day, but he had a swollen knee before he came here and he had to come off in the game,” O’Neil told the UK The Sun newspaper today.
“That will stop him training for a week at most. And then he’ll be going away to play during the international break so we’ll monitor him during that game.
“But I haven’t seen enough of him yet to make a decision on him.”
Sunzu transfer saga from TP Mazembe to the Premiership has been headline news for the last three months.
An earlier deal to join Reading fell through after confusion over his status following reports that he was a free agent.
A 28 year old man of Chikoyi village in Chief Chipalo’s area in Luwingu district in the Northern province has been arrested for murdering his wife after a dispute over Nshima.
Northern Province Police Commissioner Mary Chikwanda confirmed the development to ZANIS today that Bright Bwalya was arrested and charged with murder contrary to section 200 chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.
“Yes Police have arrested a male Bright Bwalya 28 of Chikoyi village in Chief Chipalo area for murdering his wife, female Eli Chibale 38 over Nshima dispute,” she said.
It is alleged that Bwalya on Sunday 10th March 2013 around 20:00 hours, picked a quarrel with his wife, Eli Chibale 38 over Nshima she did not reserve for him after coming from the drinking spree in the same village.
Ms. Chikwanda said Bwalya before leaving his home did not leave money for relish despite pleas from his wife to do so.
Bwalya instead came back home drunk and demanded for Nshima but his wife told him that she did not cook because there was no relish.
All this was happening in the presence of their son who is nine years old.
Ms. Chikwanda said after a long heated debate a fight erupted and Bwalya beat up his wife to death.
The Northern Province Police Commissioner explained that both Bwalya and his son went to bed without knowing that the victim was died.
On Monday morning Bwalya left home for his usual business but the boy went to the sitting room and noticed that her mother whose blood oozed through the noise was not responding and decided to report the matter to the neighbours.
Ms. Chikwanda said the child in the company of neighbours reported the ordeal to the police.
She said after police visited the scene discovered that Chibale had several bruises on the neck, and on the left side of the face.
And Police Officer in Charge Assistant Superintendent Mwelwa Sampa said the man will appear before Luwingu magistrate for mention.
Mr. Sampa said the body of Chibale is lying at the district hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
And Luwingu District Commissioner Mambwe Katontoka said men should learn to sit down and dialogue when there is any misunderstanding adding that this was the only way gender based violence can be contained.
Ms. Katontoka warned men in Luwingu district who look at women as sex objects or kitchen servants to desist and see them as partners in development.
Paediatrics patients at Nansenga Government Rural health Centre in Chief Muwezwa’s Chiefdom in Itezhi Tezhi district are sometimes subjected to sleeping on mattresses on the floor and share the few available mattresses in the admission wards.
And health workers at the rural health centre which is situated 110 kilometres from Itezhi Tezhi town have described the condition as “dangerous and unsanitary”.
This came to light when Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Mr. Greyford Monde visited the rural health centre which was opened by Member of Central Committee for Southern Province ( MCC) Mungoni Liso in 1980 during the Kenneth Kaunda administration.
A tour of the three decade old tiny rural health centre which needs a facelift and expansion revealed the bad conditions paediatrics patients and other patients are subjected to such as having to sleep on mattresses on the floor.
Health officials at the centre said the rural health centre has small wards meant for less than five patients but too many patients are being admitted.
“In addition to sleeping on the floor on mattresses, patients are sharing mattresses because they are not enough” said one of the Environmental health officers stationed at the institution.
The officers also said the rural health centre which lacks a clinician and midwife receives more patients than it was built for.
And Mr Monde who is also Member of Parliament for Itezhi tezhi, and was touched by the condition at the rural health centre, said it was unsanitary and dangerous for patients to sleep on the floor.
He said government will soon employ health workers and that he will ensure that important personnel such as clinician and midwife are deployed to the health centre.
And Mr. Monde has donated 10 mattresses to the rural health centre in order to alleviate the problems that patients are facing at the rural health centre.
“This situation is appling and immediately I have donated at least 10 mattresses to the health centre. This is just to sort out this urgent problem before government can come in for other capital projects at the institution “he said.
Sinazongwe United Party for National Development (UPND) area Member of Parliament Richwell Siamunene has urged opposition MPs to work with Government in order to take development to their areas.
Mr Siamunene who is Commerce, Trade and Industry Deputy Minister urged opposition MPs to break the political syndrome of merely trying to oppose activities by government.
Mr Siuamunene said opposition MPs can only take meaningful development in their areas if they work closely with Government.
He told journalists in Sinazongwe over the weekend that time for mere politicking is long gone, saying this is time for people to work together to defeat social challenges such as poverty, unemployment and disease.
The Sinazongwe MP said he took the sacrifice to put his future in the opposition UPND at risk by accepting to work with Government for the benefit of the people in his area.
He said there is need for the opposition to change their mindset and work closely with Government for the betterment of the citizenry.
Mr Siamunene said he is ready to be expelled from his party for the sake of bringing development to the people of Sinazongwe.
The Sinazongwe legislator said his decision to accept to work with Government was done in the interest of taking development to his area.
Mr Siamunene said people that are privileged to be in leadership positions should serve the interest of the people they lead above their interests.
He said he took the sacrifice to face expulsion from his party for the sake of the people so that they too can benefit from Government projects that will be initiated in the area.
Mr Siamunene said there is also need for politicians to respect the leadership which he said has been instituted by God, saying no leadership can exist unless it is sanctioned by God.
He said it was the duty of every individual in the country regardless of their political affiliations to respect the leadership that be.
Mr Siamunene further thanked Government for embarking on the rehabilitation of the Bottom road and bridges in Southern Province.
He said the rehabilitation of the Bottom road project once completed will open up exploration of many minerals that Sinazongwe district is endowed with.
Southern Province Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga (right) addressing Livingstone journalists in her office
Southern Province Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga has said that the police were closely monitoring a group of people commonly known as ‘Gaza’ which recently came to Livingstone from Lusaka’s Chibolya Township with an intention of engaging in violence.
Addressing a media briefing at her office in Livingstone on Monday afternoon,, Ms Katanga said the police were alert to ensure that the group did not intimidate voters or engage in any other form of criminality.
“We wish to warn anyone trying to cause violence or anarchy that the law will catch up with them.
Unfortunately we already recorded a death of Harrison Chanda and we will not allow any more death. We are well ahead of this Gaza group and we have enough space to detain such people,” Ms Katanga said.
She also urged the electorates in Livingstone to vote peacefully on Thursday saying the police would guarantee peace and security to all voters.
“Let everyone vote without intimidation and we wish to warn political parties to preach peace even as they do media campaigns which are allowed.
We will not allow any form of campaign such as flyers apart from print and electronic media,” she said.
And Ms Katanga said the freeing of Mazabuka Member of Parliament Gary Nkombo and eight United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres on Monday followed the fact that the police currently had direct evidence in which Mr Lungu allegedly hit the fatal injury on the late Mr Chanda.
Ms Katanga assured the nation that the prosecution was going to secure a conviction in view of the current evidence.
“We have everything on hand as well as the identity of that particular person (Mr Lungu) and whatsoever was used on that material day of February 25, 2013.
The nation will be informed at an appropriate time. The injury was grave and an object was used but I will not tell you what kind of an object was used for fear of jeopardising with investigations,” Ms Katanga said.
She said apart from suspended Livingstone Mayor Aggrey Njekwa, who had already been turned to a state witness, there were other witnesses who were ready to testify in court.
“The most important question that we have established so far is on who struck the fatal blow?
Of course we can’t rule out the possibility of more people going to be arrested but a pressing question is on who caused the death and we have established that already,” she said.
Ms Katanga said vehicles were damaged while windows were shattered when Mr Chanda was allegedly killed.
“A lot of information is coming in on identity of all other people involved and the police will not rest until all of them are cornered.
They can enjoy their limited freedom now but the law will catch up with them. The beauty with criminal law is that it ‘doesn’t rot’. Even if it takes two or 10 years, we will catch up with them,” she said.
Ms Katanga said more members of the public were helping the police with information regarding the matter.
On Monday, Livingstone Magistrate Chola Musonda released Mr Nkombo and eight UPND cadres following the instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to discontinue proceedings in the matter.
During the same day, Mr Lungu, 26, of B230 Livingstone’s Libuyu Township appeared in the same court and he was charged with the murder of Chanda contrary to section 200 of the Penal Code chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.
Mr Lungu would appear in court on March 25 this year for another mention while the court awaits instruction from the DPP.

The Mining industry contributes 65 percent to Zambia’s national treasury and the major mining operations are in North-Western Province where, among the mining firms, are world-renowned mines like Kansanshi Ming PLC owned by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) and Barrick Gold’s Lumwana Mining Company. However, the road to Solwezi from the Copperbelt is in a deplorable condition and motorists are having challenges on the highway which is riddled with huge potholes. And in avoiding potholes, some motorists are causing accidents. But children from the villages on the Chingola-Solwezi road have resorted to patching up the road using mud, in exchange for money from the motorists as can be seen above
Nearly all the incarcerated women at Mukobeko Maximum female prison last week openly wept after learning that a 24-year-old woman who murdered her baby by throwing it in a well due to economic challenges had been sentenced to death.
Sources disclosed that upon Agness Njovu’s arrival at the prison, her colleagues asked her how the judgment went and upon disclosing to them that she had been sentenced to death, the inmates all started crying out loudly.
“This is normally an area where the women live like a family but that afternoon was a solemn one to see the inmates weeping on top of their voices which also alarmed us as officers,” the source said.
The women later assisted the woman to pack her belongings before she was whisked away to the female condemned section.
Since that day, the mood had remained solemn among the female inmates. Recently Kabwe High Judge Elita Mwikisa sentenced Njovu to death by hanging after finding her guilty of having caused the death of a one-year-six month’s old baby, Angelina Mumba, saying she had no right to take the life of her own child.
Njovu threw herself in the same well.
This is in case in which Njovu was facing one count of murder committed on April 13, 2012 after she threw the toddler and another four-year old girl into a well but members of the public managed to retrieve the four-year old and her.
In her judgment, Judge Mwikisa said it was saddening that the accused ended the life of her own child and that despite the challenges, it was not wise to act in such a manner and that she should pay for her actions.
“Unfortunately my hands are tied because the charge you are faced with is very serious which attracts a sentence of death penalty and cannot be reduced. I therefore sentence you to death, to be hanged until you are pronounced dead,” she said.
Information and Broadcasting Deputy Minister, Mwansa Kapeya (c) in one of the studios at Radio Maria-Zambia in Chipata
Government has described calls by some opposition political parties who are urging youths to snub the youth day celebrations as
retrogressive.
And Government has called on youths across the country to turn up in large numbers to celebrate Youths Day which falls tomorrow.
Information and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister Mwansa Kapeya said calls to snub the youth day cerebrations should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve.
Mr. Kapeya noted that youth Day is an important and non partisan platform for young people to have their voices heard in shaping the future of the nation.
Mr. Kapeya said this in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday.
The Information and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister said it is selfish and hypocritical for the opposition political party leaders to urge youths to stay away from the youth day celebrations, the day which he said brought some of the opposition leaders into limelight which they are now enjoying.
The Minister alleged that it was not surprising that the former ruling party was calling for youths to shun the day because it has neither the vision nor the interest of the youths at heart.
He appealed to all Zambian youths to reject such political parties as they are detrimental to their wellbeing and the future of Zambia.
He further charged that the opposition MMD has nothing to offer the people of Zambia hence its fruitless efforts to derail government programmes.
The Deputy Minister’s call follows the story which appeared in yesterday’s Times of Zambia newspaper where the opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy is quoted as calling on youths to stay away from today’s youth day celebrations.
And President Michael Sata has advised youths around the country not to adhere to calls by opposition leaders to boycott Youth Day celebrations.
Mr Sata said it was important for youths to turn up for their event as this was the opportunity to let Government know about problems facing them.
He said this at State House in Lusaka yesterday when he swore-in Sinjembela UPND Member of Parliament, Poniso Njeula and his Kalabo Central counterpart, Chinga Miyutu as deputy ministers.
Mr Sata said the MMD and the UPND had been calling for boycotts of national events including last Friday’s Women’s Day but hailed the high turn-out of the womenfolk at the celebrations graced on his behalf by Vice President Guy Scott.
“Congratulations to the MMD and UPND for telling women to boycott Women’s Day. I am glad they listened to them because they turned out in large numbers including the FDD and NAREP. They (opposition) are now telling the youths to boycott Youth Day, but I urge all the youths to turn out in numbers as well because this is the only way government can know about their problems,” Mr Sata said.
FILE: Steven Masumba showing his diploma to the media that is said to have been irregularly issued because the minister did not successfully complete his training programme.
Defence in the case involving Sports Deputy Minister, Stephen Masumba yesterday failed to kick start its defence as the defence lawyers applied for an adjournment.
In making the adjournment appeal Defence Lawyer Mutakela Lisimba told Lusaka Magistrate Wilfred Muma that the defence team was ready to proceed with three witnesses but that they were not ready to proceed today as the first witness was not present during the courts sitting.
Mr. Lisimba told the court that the defence has come up with a manner in which they want the case to flow, by opening defence with the three witnesses adding that the accused person will be the last person to speak.
He said the said witness was very important in the matter adding that it was necessary that the witness be presented and testify on behalf of the accused person.
Mr. Lisimba told Magistrate Muma that it was the defence teams prayer that an adjournment be granted as it was the first time the defence was asking for an adjournment compared to the state prosecution team which had asked for adjournments on several occasions.
However state prosecutor from the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Etambuyu Zimba argued that the defence team did not give compelling reasons why the matter should be adjourned.
Mr. Zimba further argued that the accused person is on record stating that he would testify in the matter adding that in that regard the state finds no reason why he should not be the first person to speak followed by other witnesses.
In response to the state prosecutions argument, defence lawyer Lisimba reminded the prosecution team that the court should not worry about anything as the three witnesses are not going to take a long time testifying.
He said according to the defence teams plan, the three witnesses are going to give their testimony in one day.
Mr. Lisimba said justice should not be rushed adding that the constitution is clear on the two choices an accused person can take in defence “either one speaks or decides to keep quite”.
In passing ruling on the Defences application magistrate Muma said it is not the wish of the court to jeopardise the case but ensure that justice prevails.
Magistrate Muma further granted the defence a benefit of doubt and granted them an adjournment based on the argument that it was the defences first time to apply for an adjournment.
He said since the defence team had come up with a particular manner in which they want the case to proceed it was right to adjourn the matter to a later date.
Magistrate Muma has since adjourned the matter to April 9, this year for commencement of defence.
Mr. Masumba, 31, stands charged with one count of offence of obtaining pecuniary advantage through false pretences contrary to section 309a (2) c of the penal code as read with section 41 of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Act number 42 of 1996.
It is alleged that Mr. Masumba between December 1, 2005 and August 2008 obtained employment for himself as an Accounting Officer at the Lusaka Business and Technical College (LBTC) using forged documents.
UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has charged that President Michael Sata has cheapened the status of the Zambian Presidency by constantly attacking him over the source of his wealth.
In an interview, Mr. Hichilema urged President Sata to realize that he is no longer in the opposition.
“It is rather cheap for him (President Sata) to constantly attack Hakainde. He has a job to do and let him concentrate on delivering his promises. Zambia is bigger than Hakainde,” Mr. Hichilema said.
He said it is now becoming embarrassing that every time President Sata opens his mouth, he is talking about Hakainde Hichilema.
[pullquote]“It is rather cheap for him (President Sata) to constantly attack Hakainde. He has a job to do and let him concentrate on delivering his promises. Zambia is bigger than Hakainde,” Mr. Hichilema said.[/pullquote]
He said it is cheapening for the President to constantly attack his opponents over flimsy grounds at the expense of national development.
Mr. Hichilema said the Director of Public Prosecutions is free to investigate the source of his wealth but raised concern over the direct interference of the Executive into the operations of the Office of the DPP.
He stated that President Sata is breaching the constitution by openly giving orders to the DPP to prosecute individuals perceived to be his political enemies.
“When we talk of a breakdown of the rule of law, this is what we are talking about. The man is openly mutilating the constitution and Zambians should rise and defend the constitution. We cannot allow this man to take us down this level. Zambians must stand up and refuse,” Mr. Hichilema said.
[pullquote]“Is it now a crime to own property in this country? The President must be thanking us for creating jobs for Zambians and encouraging others to go in that direction but he is now busy berating us.”[/pullquote]
Mr. Hichilema added that he genuinely acquired his wealth through hard work adding that this is not the first time that an inquiry is being instituted over his source of wealth.
“For me this is an old story, I have said so many times that I have worked hard for my money and anyone is free to come and investigate. This same issue rose during the Mwanawasa and Banda administrations and President Sata has been singing the same song about Hakainde’s wealth.”
“Is it now a crime to own property in this country? The President must be thanking us for creating jobs for Zambians and encouraging others to go in that direction but he is now busy berating us.”
During a swearing in ceremony at State House, President Sata instructed the DPP to explore possibilities of prosecuting Mr. Hichilema over the source of his wealth.
Inspector General of Police Stella Libongani has issued a strong warning to Mazabuka MP Garry Nkombo and eight others discharged of murder against inciting members of their parties to engage in offensive activities.
In a news statement, Mrs. Libongani said those released should desist from issuing contemptuous statements or inciting their cadres as these may be grounds of violence.
“We are alive to the fact that some of the accused persons in the Harrison Chanda murder case have been released after a nolle proseque was entered but members of the public should not take advantage of these releases by calling for unlawful assemblies, issuing contemptuous statements or inciting members of their parties to engage in offensive activities as these may be grounds of violence,” Mrs. Libongani stated.
She added, “We expect all political parties conduct themselves in a peaceful manner and that we (police) will receive maximum cooperation from all the stakeholders before, during and after the by-elections.
The Police IG said the Zambia Police service is adequately prepared to maintain law and order during this period.
“It is our desire that the by election will be free of any form electoral violence.”
“As Zambia Police, we have enough manpower on the ground to handle any volatile situation that may arise and those who will opt to perpetrate electoral violence will be dealt with accordingly,” she said.
Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili has told Nkana supporters to safeguard the newly refurbished Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.
Speaking during the re-commissioning of the stadium on Sunday, Kambwili cautioned the Nkana faithful against hooliganism.
He described the re-opening of Nkana Stadium renovated by Mopani Copper Mines as the happiest day of his life.
“Today (Sunday) is the happiest day of my life. Copperbelt could not be Copperbelt without Nkana Red Devils,” Kambwili said.
“Nkana is now back to the Kalampa days that we knew when we were young,” he declared.
“I want to appeal to you (supporters) that with the infrastructure that you have today please avoid violence because it doesn’t pay. Put your heads together and safeguard the infrastructure. that we are re-opening today” he added.

Beston Chambeshi says their Charity Shield win does not compensate for Power Dynamos Confederation Cup exit.
Power beat Zanaco 2-1 in the Charity Shield final last Saturday a week after CR Caala of Angola ejected them by the same aggregate score-line from the Confederation Cup.
“This does not compensate for the Confederation Cup exit but it was a good preparation for the league and I am happy with the character of the players,” Chambeshi said.
Power now turns its attention to the league with an away Week One trip to Nchanga Rangers this Saturday.
“Each and every team prepares to win silverware. You know Power Dynamos is a big team they always want to win titles,” Chambeshi said.
“All I can say is we are ready for the challenge.”
