Corruption levels under UPND will surpass the ones witnessed during the reign of PF-M’membe

Opposition Socialist Party leader Dr. Fred M’membe has charged that corruption levels under the New Dawn Government will surpass the ones witnessed during the reign of the Patriotic Front (PF).

Dr. M’membe said there is corruption in the UPND led government which they opposed before forming government.

Dr. M’membe has since challenged the current government to explain why it single-sourced Maurice Jangulo’s Alpha Commodities to supply 37,000 tonnes of fertilizers at $1,407 per tonne while the general market price is $1,000 per tonne.

He alleged that in the Alpha Commodities deal there was theft of an additional $15.059 million from the Zambian people in the form of super-profits.

“The Socialist Party leader said the UPND government must explain why Jangulo was allowed to control, direct, manipulate and falsify a fertiliser audit under its supervision and control. When they were in opposition, the UPND talked about corruption, yet there is still corruption in their government. And at the rate we are going, they will dwarf the PF corruption at the end of their term of office,” Dr. M’membe said.

“We yet again challenge the current government to explain why it single-sourced Maurice Jangulo’s Alpha Commodities to supply 37,000 tonnes of fertilizers at $1,407 per tonne while the general market price is $1,000 per tonne – stealing an additional $15.059 million from the Zambian people in super-profits,” he alleged.

“Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) was given to supply 13,000 tonnes of fertilisers at $1,000 per tonne. On top of this Jangulo had no stocks of fertilizers and started going around trying to source the commodity from his competitors whom he had discredited in an audit he had initiated and influenced,” Dr. M’membe said.

Dr. M’membe said the Alpha Commodities fertiliser deal is pure corruption that the government and the state agencies like Anti Corruption Commissioner (ACC) , Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC ) and the police – under its control have failed to deal with.

“We challenge this government to explain why Jangulo was allowed to control, direct, manipulate and falsify a fertiliser audit under its supervision and control. This is pure corruption that this government and the state agencies – ACC, DEC and the police – under its control have failed to deal with. Why? Our simple and only explanation is that Jangulo is too close to the key leaders of this government to be touched. He is their partner – he works and eats with them. There is a need to approach the fight against corruption with seriousness that it deserves,” he said.

Dr. M’membe said the system that the UPND regime has embarked on is inherently corrupt.

“In their so-called fight against corruption, they are tempering with individuals but the system that the UPND is using is not different from the one used by the PF! Corruption is going to deepen. In terms of Institutions, what have they changed? Whatever they are doing is still under the neo liberal economic policies that were pursued by the previous regime. The system that they have embarked on is inherently corrupt,” he concluded.

Zambia to be a champion of nickel production in Africa-HH

7

President Hakainde Hichilema says the newly a US$250 million Enterprise Nickel mine project in Kalumbila district is important as it will provide raw materials for the production of electric motor vehicle batteries.

Mr Hichilema says development will also help the country make the vision of moving into a clean and environmental friendly nation a reality.

The President made the remarks when he officiated at the ground breaking ceremony for a project which is part of the US$1.35 billion expansion investment by First Quantum Minerals (FQM).

The project which will be the biggest nickel producer in Africa is expected to create about 18,000 direct and indirect jobs.

“The vision of Zambia moving from a brown energy to green energy is slowly becoming a reality with such projects coming on board,” Mr Hichilema said.

The head of state said the project will also create jobs and household income for the local people as well as generate revenue for the country adding that the revenue generated through taxes will be channeled to other needy areas such as procurement of desks and drugs.

” This project is important for our country, as it will create jobs for our people and food in homes, this is an important consideration for us when embarking on any project,” he said.

Mr Hichilema said there is need to create long lasting relationships between the community and investors because both parties are beneficiaries.

He said government will for this reason continue working with partners and investors in reducing poverty, creating jobs and income for the local people.

“We are ready to work with any and all that love progress to reduce poverty, create jobs and household income,” Mr Hichilema said.

Speaking earlier, FQM chief executive officer Tristan Pascal said Zambia continues to be a prime destination for investment owing to the conducive environment.

Once in full operation , the mine will produce 30,000 tonnes of nickel per year.

Mr Pascal said the nickel project will also provide about 430 megawatts of wind and solar energy in a few years to come.

And mines Minister, Paul Kabuswe said the mine project will make Zambia a champion of nickel production in Africa as the country will contribute to the growing demand of nickel for production of electric motor vehicle batteries.

Mr Kabuswe said government will ensure that any investment that comes to any part of the country uplifts the lives of the local people.

Northwestern province Minister Robert Lihefu said the nickel project will create many other opportunities apart from direct jobs.

Mr Lihefu said the coming of the project is in line with the United Party for National Development (UPND) manifesto on job creation and poverty eradication.

UPND Youths in Lundazi Protest Against Partisan Approval of CDF projects

The United Party for National Development (UPND) youths in Lundazi staged a protest over the partisan approval of projects under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

The youths clad in party regalia consequently locked the town council premises demanding for the reversal of all approved CDF projects under the first quarter of 2022.

UPND District Chairman Henry Ngenda said during a brief that the approval of youths and community projects for cooperatives under the CDF has allegedly been biased towards the Patriotic Front youths.

“ Out of the 38 projects that were approved for the first quarter under the CDF, only four projects were approved for the UPND youths in the district, “he said.

He charged youths have since appealed to the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Garry Nkomba to intervene and have the projects reversed.

And addressing UPND youths Lundazi Town Council Secretary Dr Mwansa Mfula assured the angered youths that he will contact the minister so that their demands are met.

He assured that once the projects were reversed his officers will ensure that there was transparency in the approval of projects.

Dr Mwansa also assured of restoring the trust for the local authority by ensuring that workers become nonpartisan and ensure that there was transparency in approving projects.

Recently, government released K 5.1 million being the first quarter under the CDF to Lundazi Town Council.

Zambia records high HIV/AIDS cases among women

2

National Aids Council (NAC) director Connie Osborne says the country has recorded a high number of women infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) .

Describing the situation as unfortunate, Dr Osborrne says the most affected are young women a situation that calls for concerted efforts for all stakeholders.

Government together with other stakeholders can collaborate and come up with programs aimed at educating youths on HIV/AIDS prevention methods, he says , it can help in reducing the infection rate.

Dr Osborne said this in a speech read on his behalf by National Aids Council (NAC) director of Programs Fortune Chibamba during a collaboration meeting for youth HIV prevention held in Lusaka yesterday.

‘’Our plan is to have more such interactions where the youths and other stakeholders are brought together to dialogue and share information that will help them prevent themselves from the devastating HIV and AIDS virus ,’’ Dr Osborne said.

He urged the youths to put preventive measures as a priority in there day to day lives adding that if they do not prevent themselves from this deadly virus the infection rates will continue increasing and it is not good for country.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Health HIV Officer Tendia Munthali has since called on parents to help government and stakeholders in sanitizing youths on HIV prevention so that they can be protected from the virus.

‘’Parents please help us by teaching and educating our youths on this matter which is of great importance adding that if youths are not well informed they will continue doing what they are doing not knowing that they are killing themselves , ’ Ms Munthali said.

Mumbi Phiri’s murder case non bailable – Mweetwa

28

The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa says his party is concerned with accusations from the opposition that President Hakainde Hichilema is influencing the criminal justice system.

This follows the prolonged case of former outspoken Patriotic Front Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri who has been detained and charged since February this year.

This is in connection with the murder of a UPND member Lawrence Banda in 2019 during the Kaoma by-elections.

Speaking at a media briefing at the party secretariat in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Mweetwa said shortly after the general elections, President Hichilema from the onset reaffirmed that his administration will not interfere in the work of the justice system adding that the situation still remains unchanged.

He said although his party is equally concerned that Mrs Phiri has been detained for this long, there are other UPND members who are currently faced with a similar predicament of being detained for a prolonged period of time without trial.

“There are many UPND members who were arrested before elections. Some of them have never seen the walls of the courtroom and we have as an example about eight to 12 youths who are languishing in Monze prisons for almost two years now charged with the offence of murder having been alleged to have murdered Timothy Hakuyu during the gassing,” Mr Mweetwa said.

He however said the case involving the former senior PF party official involves murder which is non-bailable.

“You have seen a number of colleagues who have been arrested before, those from the Patriotic Front as an example, being arrested at 10 hours, two hours later, they are back on the streets with their freedom. The difference with the Mumbi Phiri case is she is facing murder which is non-bailable,” Mr Mweetwa said.

The continued detention of Mrs Mumbi since February has drown concerns from sections of society among them being Green Party leader Peter Sikamba who said Mrs Mumbi’s continued detention is political.

Meanwhile the UPND has commended the Zambia Police Service for the professional manner it handled the questioning of former first lady Esther Lungu when she appeared at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) offices in Lusaka yesterday.

Mr Mweetwa also commended the PF for exhibiting peace when offering solidarity to the former first lady.

“We want to thank our colleagues in the Patriotic Front for somehow behaving in a good manner. I think they are beginning to understand that Zambia is different now, caderism and hooliganism has no space under the New Dawn Administration, they behaved well, at least if you had to look at what it should have been 10 months ago, that is commendable,” he said.

Several Patriotic Front (PF) Members of the Central Committee (MCC) and sympathisers showed up at the DEC HQ this afternoon in a quest to offer support to the former first lady.

Inspector General of Police Lemmy Kajoba warned people planning to meet at Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) to offer solidarity to former first lady Esther Lungu of severe consequences.

PF Deputy for Information and Publicity Ambassader . Emmanuel Mwamba noted that the directive given by the Police IG is illegal and against the constitution of Zambia as people have freedom of association, assembly and can express themselves.

Kelvin Kampamba Promises Chipolopolo will be Clinical in CHAN Final Leg

0

Chipolopolo forward Kelvin Kampamba says Zambia must be clinical upfront ahead of this Saturday’s decisive CHAN qualifier against Mozambique, set for the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

Chipolopolo Zambia drew away with Mozambique on Sunday must now win at home this coming weekend to stay in the hunt for 2022 CHAN qualification.

Kampamba said Zambia would have beaten the Mambas had they not wasted many opportunities in the first half of the first leg tie.

“We needed to score an away goal but unfortunately the game came out 0-0,” Zesco United player said.

“Now we know how Mozambique is playing and we know what to do in the return match. In the return leg we just need to be clinical in front of goal and we need to unsettle them with an early goal,” Kampamba told reports in Lusaka.

Winner will advance to next month’s final round where Malawi awaits.

Government committed to conduct successful census exercise

0

Minister of Finance and National Planning has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to solicit for resources required to conduct the 2022 census of population and housing which will commence on August 18, 2022.

Dr. Musokotwane has reiterated that government will put in place necessary measures to ensure that the census is conducted successfully conducted.

He said government attaches great importance to the collection of accurate data as it is key in helping the government plan in meeting the needs of its population.

ZANIS reports that the minister said this during the launch of the 2022 State of the World Population Report and commemoration of the World Population Day.

Dr. Musokotwane said a healthy population is critical in achieving sustainable development.

He noted that a healthy population is cardinal for Zambia to achieve the vision 2030 of becoming a prosperous middle income country.

Dr. Musokotwane said this is why government is keen to harness opportunities that come with population increase so as to foster economic growth in the country.

He noted that population remains a cornerstone in building strong resilient economies.

The Minister stated that Zambia like many other countries is taking stock of the investment opportunities that come with population growth.

Dr. Musokotwane noted that the 2022 World Population Day gives Zambia a chance to review and come up with developmental strategies aimed at harnessing population demographics.

And commenting on COVID-19, Dr. Musokotwane said government is working tirelessly so as to ensure that it effectively manages the pandemic.

He expressed optimism that the measures being instituted by government will assist in mitigating the impact of COVID-19.

Speaking earlier at the same event, Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo said the commemoration of the World Population Day is aimed at drawing attention to issues arising from population growth.

Ms Masebo further said observing of the World Population Day is meant to highlight the growing problems that come with increased population.

She said reproductive health services must be made accessible universally as this is cardinal in managing population growth.

And United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Representative, Gift Malunga said cases of unattended pregnancies are alarming in Zambia.

Ms Malunga disclosed that the current data shows that 29 percent of adolescent girls will become mothers while they are still children.

She said unattended pregnancy per one thousand women is estimated to be 123 in Zambia compared to 64 globally.

Ms Malunga further indicated that more than 60 percent of unattended pregnancy end in abortion.

UPND youths regret slow development in Eastern Province

1

United Party for National Development (UPND) youths in the Eastern Province say it is regrettable that Eastern Province lagged in development for the past ten years despite harbouring a lot of potential.

However, the youths have said the Eastern Province, like the rest of the country, is headed for unprecedented development under the leadership of the new Government President Hakainde Hichilema.

Speaking to ZANIS, UPND youth wing Deputy Media Director for Eastern Province Victor Mbuzi said just like the rest of the country, the region is poised for a turnaround under the current leadership.

Mr Mbuzi said the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema has already proven to the citizenry through major milestones like increased Constituency Development Funds, Enhanced youth and women empowerment, mass recruitments of teachers and health workers as well as the implementation of free education, among others.

“The recruitment of over 30,000 teachers is unprecedented. And we will soon see huge numbers of health workers being recruited,” he said.

He added that many other notable developments have been recorded from the increased and consistent disbursements of CDF.

“Local authorities in respective districts are embarking on a lot of projects now as a result of these funds,” he added.

To the province, Mr Mbuzi has called on those in positions of leadership to work together for the general good.

He said the Government has given the people power to take control of the development direction in their respective communities, and unity of purpose will help the province attain the desired development.

“The ground is favourable for every corner of the country to develop. As a province, we have been lagging in terms of development, so my appeal is that we work together as we explore all opportunities to better our lives as people of this region,” he noted.

Former President Lungu needs ‘Alaginzi’ to advise him in the new role as the father of the nation

16

National Restoration Party (NAREP) Secretary General Ezra Ngulube says Former President Edgar Lungu needs Alaginzi (Counsellor) to advise him in the new role as the father of the nation as he is the only surviving Former Head of State that we have in Zambia.

Mr Ngulube stated this in response to the call made by the former head of state who is on record saying that he is ready to have his immunity removed as he is ready to answer any call from any investigating wing.

“Why should the PF members and Members of Parliament try to stop the former head of state? The big man is ready, so let us respect him and allow him to answer the call for himself and his family quietly,” he said

He added that it is very disappointing to see that the Patriotic Front (PF) which is the former ruling party cry foul whenever the investigating wings call upon its members to answer some questions with regards to the wealth accumulated during the 10 years they have been in power.

Mr Ngulube cited the need to bear in mind that the previous positions which were held by the PF were not private positions but public offices which demand accountability to the people of Zambia, therefore, there’s no civil servant who is being sent by anybody, not even the office of the President to come and investigate anybody but it’s the people of Zambia that are calling for accountability from both the current and previous government officials.

“The PF must stop abusing the people of Zambia,” he said

“Indeed, whenever the people of Zambia call for accountability from the current government and also from the leaders that served in the previous government, it doesn’t mean we are witch hunting, neither does it mean the President has sent anyone to investigate you,” he stated

Mr Ngulube highlighted that as for the former first lady Esther Lungu, there is no way to say that the President of Zambia has sent investigative wings to go and investigate her for this just shows how the PF used to rule in the previous government.

Mr Ngulube has since advised the former first lady and others that whenever they are called upon by the investigative wings, they answer that call quietly.

“The DEC, Police and other investigative units have the mandate to enforce the law,” he said

He said that there is no need for the former first lady to get agitated and scared if she is clean and did not steal.

He added that it’s very important for Mrs Lungu to answer the call quietly and be accountable to the people of Zambia because they are the ones that gave her an opportunity to serve and preside over national resources.

“Stop abusing other people’s children to escort you to DEC or the Police in this cold season just answer the call quietly mama and if you are clean there’s nothing to worry about, why should you cry to other People’s children to escort you?” he said

Mr Ngulube who is also UPND Alliance Media Committee Member highlighted this in a statement issued to the media.

Do not stigmatize menstrual hygiene – DC

2

A senior Government official in Senga Hill District in Northern Province has urged people to take menstrual hygiene as a normal factor.

District Commissioner, Jestus Sikazwe said menstruation is a normal factor which should not be considered as a taboo.

Mr. Sikazwe explained that menstruation is a biological being of a woman which should be respected.

The District Commissioner said this when Action Aid held a Menstrual Hygiene Day Commemoration in Tanzuka area of Senga Hill District.

And Action Aid Northern Hub Coordinator, Ian Mutuna said the organization felt it is important to continue with the commemoration of the day even if it had passed.

Mr. Mutuna explained that the message that had come with the day is still important which should continue to be spread.

He added that menstruation has not been accepted by many as a normal factor which has led to many women and girls to lag behind in participating in many developmental activities.

He said many girls have dropped out of school for fear of being laughed at when they mess themselves during menstruation.

Mr. Mutuna said this and many other myths that come with menstruation should be dealt with and be abolished.

Sub Chief Tanzuka has urged people in his area to move away from the old ways of treating menstruation as a taboo.

The sub chief said women especially should play a key role by starting to explain well to their children that menstruation is normal.

He said by doing so, the theme of making menstruation a normal factor by 2030 will be achieved.

Zambia, China strengthens ties

7

Minister of Justice, Mulambo Haimbe has reaffirmed Zambia’s continued collaboration with China in all aspects of development.

Mr. Haimbeb said this is why Zambia has resolved to further strengthen its relations and explore other areas of cooperation such as trade.

He explained that China has also proved to be a critical partner to Zambia by being part of Zambia’s debt restructuring process.

Speaking when the Chinese Ambassador to Zambia called on him at his office in Lusaka today, Mr. Haimbe said from the time Zambia attained its independence, it has been a strong ally of China which has made significant contributions to its growth.

“From the time Zambia was born, the country continued to enjoy a long lasting relationship with China which has also been part of its growth and China has come to the negotiating table for Zambia’s debt restructuring process which is very critical, “ he explained.

He added that the Ministry of Justice is considering ensuring that all processes regarding trade between Zambia and China are reviewed as a way of easing the way of doing business.

Mr. Haimbe stated that currently the two countries are already trade partners stating that government is committed to ensuring that it is enhanced for the benefit of people of China and Zambia.

And Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Du Xiaohui reaffirmed his country’s continued support towards building strong relations with Zambia.

Mr. Du. said China and Zambia have always been all weather friends and have supported each other in different sectors.

He expressed optimism that Zambia’s intentions to further strengthen its ties with China in the sector of trade.

Mr. Du cited the recently signed protocols between Zambia and China on sanitary and phytosanitary export of soya bean meal and stevia leaves as some of the agreements which will enhance trade.

We have House Niggers For Political Leaders

35

By Fred M’membe President of the Socialist Party

What we have as political leaders in Zambia today are nothing but what Malcolm X aptly explained in the parable of “house Negro” at

King Solomon Baptist Church, Detroit in a message to the Northern Negro Grass Roots Leadership Conference on November 10, 1963.
The current political leaders of our country want to be more closer and of greater service to the transnational corporations than their owners. They want to be more closer and of greater service to imperialism than the imperialists themselves.

Malcolm X told the conference:
“To understand this, you have to go back to what the young brother here referred to as the house Negro and the field Negro back during slavery. There were two kinds of slaves, the house Negro and the field Negro. The house Negroes – they lived in the house with master, they dressed pretty good, they ate good because they ate his food – what he left. They lived in the attic or the basement, but still they lived near their master; and they loved their master more than their master loved himself. They would give their life to save their master’s house – quicker than the master would. If the master said, ‘We got a good house here,’ the house Negro would say, ‘Yeah, we got a good house here.’ Whenever the master said ‘we,’ he said ‘we.’ That’s how you can tell a house Negro.

If the master’s house caught on fire, the house Negro would fight harder to put the blaze out than the master would. If the master go sick, the house Negro would say, ‘What’s the matter, boss, we sick?’ We sick! He identified himself with his master, more than his master identified with himself. And if you came to the house Negro and said, ‘Let’s run away, let’s escape, let’s separate.’ The house Negro would look at you and say, ‘Man, you crazy. What you mean, separate? Where is there a better house than this? Where can I wear better clothes than this? Where can I eat better food than this?’ That was that house Negro. In those days he was called a ‘house nigger.’ And that’s what we call them today, because we’ve still got some house niggers running around here.

This modern house Negro loves his master. He wants to live near him. He’ll pay three times as much as the house is worth just to live near his master, and then brag about ‘I’m the only Negro out here.’ ‘I’m the only one on my job.’ ‘I’m the only one in this school.’ You’re nothing but a house Negro. And if someone comes to you right now and says, ‘Let’s separate,’ you say the same thing that the house Negro said on the plantation. ‘What you mean, separate? From America, this good white man? Where you going to get a better job than you get here?’ I mean, this is what you say. ‘I ain’t left nothing in Africa,’ that’s what you say. Why, you left your mind in Africa.”

And in an address to the African Students Association and NAACP Campus Chapter, Michigan State University, East Lansing on January 23, 1963 on “The Problem of Race”, Malcolm X explained the difference between the house Negro and the field Negro:
“So you have two types of Negro. The old type and the new type. Most of you know the old type. When you read about him in history during slavery he was called ‘Uncle Tom’. He was the house Negro. But then you had another Negro out in the field. The house Negro was in the minority. The masses – the field Negroes were the masses. They were in the majority. When the master got sick, they prayed that he’d die. If his house caught on fire, they’d pray for a wind to come along and fan the breeze.
But if you went to the field Negro and said, ‘Let’s go, let’s separate,’ he wouldn’t even ask you where or how. He’d say, ‘Yes, let’s go.’ And that one ended right there.

So now you have a twentieth-century-type of house Negro. A twentieth-century Uncle Tom. He’s just as much an Uncle Tom today as Uncle Tom was 100 and 200 years ago. Only he’s a modern Uncle Tom. That Uncle Tom wore a handkerchief around his head. This Uncle Tom wears a top hat. He’s sharp. He dresses just like you do. He speaks the same phraseology, the same language. He tries to speak it better than you do. He speaks with the same accents, same diction. And when you say, ‘your army,’ he says, ‘our army.’ He hasn’t got anybody to defend him, but anytime you say ‘we’ he says ‘we.’ ‘Our president,’ ‘our government,’ ‘our Senate,’ ‘our congressmen,’ ‘our this and our that.’ And he hasn’t even got a seat in that ‘our’ even at the end of the line. So this is the twentieth-century Negro. Whenever you say ‘you,’ the personal pronoun in the singular or in the plural, he uses it right along with you. When you say you’re in trouble, he says, ‘Yes, we’re in trouble.’

But there’s another kind of Black man on the scene. If you say you’re in trouble, he says, ‘Yes, you’re in trouble.’ He doesn’t identify himself with your plight whatsoever.” We are the field Negro (the Pan Africanists, the anti imperialists) and they are the house Nigger (the agents of transnational corporations and Western imperialist puppets). The house Negro is the minority. The majority are the suffering masses of our people.

The house Nigger is used to crush our resistance to transnational corporations and imperialist exploitation, subjugation, degradation and humiliation. The house Nigger is always on offensive denouncing the field Negro to win recognition of the traditional corporations and imperialists. The house Nigger will raze down the field negro’s little shacks and booths to impress visiting dignitaries. This is the type of leadership we have for our Bantustan today! The local “Uncle Tom” is called “Uncle Bally” here in Zambia. Where is it taking us?

Zambian Breweries Signs K3 Million Deal With FAZ

1

Zambian Breweries has unveiled a K3 Million partner sponsorship deal of the FAZ Super League.

The beer giant joins principal sponsor MTN Zambia as a tier partner.

MTN Zambia has a three-year deal K45 million with FAZ that was renewed in 2021.

Zambian Breweries Corporate Affairs Manager Ezekiel Sekele said the  deal will see his company also sponsor the season-opening  2022/2023 Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Memorial Charity Shield.

This season Charity Shield will be played on August 13  in Lusaka between FAZ Super League champions Red Arrows and ABSA Cup holders Napsa Stars.

“We will be investing K3 million in the MTN Super league for this season, we are going to have additional investments during the games and some other activities and this will see the investment go beyond,” Sekele said.

“For the Charity shield it’s K250, 000 which gives us the naming rights but we will maintain the same Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu as the name.

“The Charity shield is a one-off event that will sponsor the one this year and we intend to also sponsor the next one coming.

“For the Super League is a period of 12 months which is this season and we are looking at opportunities to continue in the next coming years.”

FAZ President Andrew Kamanga described the deal as exciting times for Zambian football.

“We are more excited that Zambian Breweries will come in as tier three sponsors of the MTN Super League. For the avoidance of doubt, MTN Zambia will remain headline sponsors,” Kamanga said.

“This demonstrates what we have always said about other sponsorship opportunities for other corporates coming on board. MTN has not closed opportunities for other bodies to offer sponsorship for the league.”

PF supporters have show up at the DEC HQ to offer support to the former first lady

31

Despite the warning by the Inspector General of Police Lemmy Kajoba to people planning to meet at Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) to offer solidarity to former first lady Esther Lungu who has been summoned to appear before the commission, Patriotic Front (PF) Members of the Central Committee (MCC) have showed up at the DEC HQ in a quest to offer support to the former first lady.

PF Deputy for Information and Publicity Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba noted that the directive given by the Police IG is illegal and against the constitution of Zambia as people have freedom of association, assembly and can express themselves.

“So, when orders are illegal, you ignore them and that’s what we have done,” he said

Amb. Mwamba has since appealed to the Police IG to be professional and respect fundamental rights of people and ensure that he moves away from what Zambians condemned which is Police brutality, abuse of state institutions and the Police to operating professionally.

He added that the PF party announcing a peaceful presence at DEC HQ should not worry the Police because no one will get violent unless it’s the Police themselves who will get violent.

“They have not allowed us in, I have tried three entrances but to no avail and I introduced myself but they have still stopped me like am harmful or carrying any weapons, so why are they stopping me?” he stated

He noted that when Hon. Kampyongo former Home Affairs Minister and the former Police IG Kaganja offered a similar directive to President Hichilema, he didn’t listen, neither did he obey the orders and instructions.

“President Hichilema boasts that he has brought freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, so he wants to repeat what he used to condemn or does he what to apply vengeance because for me this is a very simple matter as I have the right to association,” he said

Amb. Mwamba cited that the huge mobilisation of the Police, closure of the road is a huge expense and big inconvenience to people, as it has even caused a traffic jam.

He stated that the Police have probably spent more money in the huge mobilization than the value of the flats they are investigating.

He said that as MCC they felt duty bound to go and offer solidarity to the former first lady as they do not believe the charges that have been offered on the former first lady on the issue of 15 flats.

He added that seeing the declarations by ordinary Members of Parliament who have assets worth 35 million of Kwacha, it’s no doubt that a woman of caliber like the former first lady whose been married to a very successful lawyer for many years, a Minister for 5 years and a President for 7 years could fail to build 15 flats.

“Ordinary people even you journalists have flats, so what about a former first lady,” he said

Amb. Mwamba holds that what is happening is mere persecution of the first family, the DEC and other law enforcement agencies have not found any case warranting even this process, this is therefore a huge witch hunt to divert the country from what is cardinal to attend to the issue of economy in the country, cost of living, and lack of employment.

“They still haven’t bought fertilizer and this is July, the PF would deliver fertilizer by May, this is government is still struggling to procure fertilizer,” he said

And Charity Kapona a Member of Central Committee (MCC) noted with concern as to when offering solidarity became a crime in Zambia because as MCCs we have the right to follow and support the former first lady so as for her to see that she has fellow women who are daughters and sisters and care for her.

“President Hichilema himself said he will give people the freedom of speech, that’s why we are here and not harmful we just want to support our mother, for this is a woman who has been the wife of the President for many years,” she said

“We have told our youths not to come in numbers and stay where they are,” she said

She cited that such a move is very discouraging to women to take part in politics because being a woman in politics will make people call you all sorts of names, as women are usually insulted, disrespected, intimidated and victimized, which is not supposed to be the case because women are needed to speak out.
