Ndola’s Bwana Mkubwa independent MP Mwambazi praises the New Dawn Government over increased CDF

Ndola’s Bwana Mkubwa independent Member of Parliament Warren Chisha Mwambazi has praised the New Dawn Government for actualising the usage of the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Cheques worth about K1.2 Million were on Tuesday morning handed over to various skills training colleges for 279 students under Ndola’s Bwana Mkubwa bursary component of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Speaking during the cheques handover to skills training colleges in Fatima, Ndola, Mr. Mwambazi said President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government is walking the talk.

He said the people of Bwana Mkubwa Constituency are excited over the actualization of CDF utilisation in relation to skills development especially among youths.

Mr. Mwambazi said like President Hichilema has said in the past the government has taken money from Lusaka to all corners of the nation.

“Inform the President, His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema that we are very grateful as Bwana Mkubwa Constituency to be one of the beneficiaries to launch this programme of handing over cheques to skills training college’s students under bursary component of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). Let me also on behalf of Bwana Mkubwa, thank you most sincerely Copperbelt Minister (Elisha Matambo) for your support in so many things. Let me also thank the Ndola City Council for ensuring that this programme today is fruitful. Honourable Minister as Bwana Mkubwa Constituency we are very grateful because this much talked about CDF today everybody is a witness we can see our brothers and sisters, our children going to school under the New Dawn government for free education. Tiyeni tubatoteleko ba President (let us clap for the President),” said.

Mr. Mwambazi underscored skills development in enhancing benefits from CDF.

“These policies Honourable Minister (Matambo) are policies which are going to work for the people of Zambia because if you look at the skills gap between the people at universities and the skills training institutions. There is a huge gap but we are very grateful to this government that today we are trying to bridge this gap and ensure that we equalise. If you look Honourable Minister today we are importing these skills from Zimbabwe, plumbers from Zimbabwe, bricklayers from Zimbabwe but now this is going to be a thing of the past because as Zambians we are going to own the skills base.Efyo cilepilibula ba Minister fyakweba ati nga twayamba ukupanga ama sukulu under CDF we will pick from the same people. The money remains in the constituency. Contractors are going to come from Bwana Mkubwa, skills, plumbers; bricklayers are going to come from Bwana Mkubwa. Taciweme ico? Ubu ubuteko, the way the President said that we are taking money to the people is through CDF and it has started today. So, Minister, we are grateful for this gesture and also the local authority that this is now a true thing which has happened on this day,” he said.

Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo officiated at the handover ceremony in Fatima with a call to benefiting students to take their training seriously.

Meanwhile, Copperbelt Minister Eliash Matambo said today’s actual handover of cheques to skills training colleges among them NORTEC is a sign that the increase of CDF by the UPND Government is real.

Mr. Matambo urged students benefiting from government bursaries to take their skills training seriously.

“The best equaliser in life is education. Your background does not matter as long as you are given an equal chance of being educated, you will be better than those coming from well to do families. In short I am telling you students to work hard after getting these government bursaries. It will be a disaster for you to go to school and fail to achieve what you are going for. This is a springboard or the root to success which God has deposited in you,” Mr. Matambo said.

Solwezi family buys Boran bull for R2.3 million to smash SA breed record

7

Jumbo (WZ 1452), an eight-year-old Boran bull, is an exceptionally well-balanced animal that is structurally correct on nearly every level.

This was according to Simeon Hurwitz of Hurwitz Farming, after the bull was sold for R 2,3 million, a new South African record for the breed, at the recent Hurwitz Farming production sale near Bethal.

The previous record price for a Boran bull was R1,7 million.

The bull was bought by the Cutury family from Zambia, and Hurwitz said he was bred from one of the best cows ever known locally, and his progeny underpins his breeding value.

While Jumbo bred outstanding female animals, he was especially known for top-quality bull breeding.

“Not only will the Cutury’s Mutanda Farms operation benefit from this remarkable bull, but the entire Boran breed in Zambia stands to gain from his genetics.

“Although Zambia is one of the pioneering Boran breeding countries in Africa, the new genetics are bound to lend renewed impetus to the breed in that country. A bull like Jumbo’s semen will always be highly sought after and the semen can be used for countless generations to come,” he added.

The 2022 Hurwitz Farming auction broke every record in local Boran breeding circles.

The highest-priced cow and calf was sold for a record R1,1 million, while the highest-priced in-calf heifer realised R650 000, and an open heifer R320 000.

Two other bulls were sold for R1,5 million and R1,3 million respectively.

According to Hurwitz, the high prices underscored the increasing recognition of the breed’s intrinsic value as a truly African breed bred for African conditions.

The number of South African Boran breeders currently stands at 350 representing some 40 000 cattle.

Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency gets new Director General

3

The Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) Board has appointed Billy Mweetwa as the new director general of the Agency for a period of three years with effect from August 2.

In February this year, the ZAMMSA Board resolved to send the entire agency management on forced leave, pending investigations of some serious anomalies at the institution.

ZAMMSA interim board secretary Kamwenje Nyalugwe confirmed the appointment of the new Director General in an internal memo dated August 5, addressed to all ZAMMSA members of staff.

“I am pleased to announce that at its special meeting held on 27th July 2022, the board approved Mr Billy Mweetwa to the position of Director General.”

Patricia Scotland honored to be Head Woman in Chief Hamusonde’s village in Monze

19

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland says she is incredibly honoured to be conferred as Head Woman by Chief Hamusonde of the Lundwe people of Bweengwa area in Monze district.

“It is a tremendous honour and I am thankful to the people of Zambia and President Hakainde Hichilema and I will always be at their service,” she tweeted.

Chief Hamusonde over the weekend conferred Ms Scotland with the status of Head Woman in his chiefdom.

This is for playing a major role to save the lives of the people in his chiefdom.

The Chief said Ms Scotland played a critical role in ensuring that Zambia was on a stable path and that the rule of law was exercised during and after the 2021 general election, which saw the new administration ushered into office.

The Chief also recognized Archbishop of Lusaka Telesphore Mpundu, Lawyer John Sangwa and Linda Kasonde, Human Rights Commissioner Laura Miti and Civil Rights activist Chama Fumba also known as Pilato, for playing an instrumental part in voicing out their democratic views in governance matters.

Speaking through a representative, Gift Monde at the 2022 Lwiindi-Lwanza traditional ceremony, Chief Hamusonde said the people mentioned and many others made sure that the country’s democracy is preserved.

Haimbe commissions police post

10

Minister of Justice Mulambo Haimbe has commissioned a newly constructed Police Post in Nyumba Yanga Township in Lubwa ward in Lusaka yesterday.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony Mr. Haimbe noted that the construction of the new police post building in the area marks the flagship of how Constituency Development Funds (CDF) should be utilized by the community.

Mr.Haimbe indicated that the construction of the facility commenced in 2017 under the CDF programme, which sets an example of how the increased CDF must be utilized by the people of Lubwa ward.

He stressed that the new facility will enhance the operations of the police officers in the area in addressing the increase in criminal offences which are mainly committed by young people popularly known as Junkies.

‘’I would like to assure the People of Lusaka central and the general citizenry that more of such works are yet to come. Very soon another police post will be completed in Chalala and North mead police post will soon be upgraded in a short space of time to keep the people safe,’’ said Mr. Haimbe.

And speaking at the commissioning, Inspector General of Police Lemmy Kajoba noted that the new police post in Lubwa ward will allow the police officers to work in a conducive environment as compared to what they have been using in past.

Mr. Kajoba indicated that the new structure is suitable for police operations and it will boost morale amongst officers who in turn will work extra hard to fight crime in the area.

He also appealed to the residents of the Yumba Yanga community to guard the infrastructure jealously and avoid setting it ablaze for just minor misunderstanding with the police or mere rumor mongering.

‘’If such behavior is condoned without police presence Nyumba Yanga will automatically become a safe haven for criminals running on rampage to terrorize the communities,’’ said Mr. Kajoba.

Meanwhile, Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala urged the community to safeguard the facility and avoid any form of vandalism because the police post is meant to protect them.

‘’I am delighted with the handover of the new police post and hope that it will work toward curbing crime in the community,’’ she said.

Should Zambians trust the Chinese technology giant, Huawei?

8

By Venus N Msyani

Chinese technology giant, Huawei is currently helping to make Zambia a smart nation. Its products dominate Zambia, leading to a partnership with MTN Zambia, the largest telecom in the country.

In January 2022 MTN and Huawei signed an agreement to introduce a 5G network aimed at boosting internet speed in the country.

Later on, in March 2022 Huawei entered into a partnership with the new dawn government aimed at accelerating Zambia’s digital transformation.

Huawei has offered to provide digital training to students and instructors across institutions in Zambia, construct a premier digital innovation hub to act as a center of excellence for ICT, and establish a Digital Innovation Scholarship Fund under the patronage of Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, benefitting 50 students each year over the next four years.

The question is, should Zambians trust Huawei? In other words, are new dawn administration opponents safe?

About mid-2019, it was reported by the Wall Street Journal that Huawei technicians helped African governments spy on their political opponents, including intercepting their encrypted communications and social media, and using cell data to track their whereabouts.

Zambian government was cited in the report and that is what is worrying. It appears United Party for National Development (UPND) believes that any wrong that happened under the previous government is justifiable if it happens under the new dawn administration.

If the previous government did, UPND believe they can also do it. As long as they do it less. So far Huawei is receiving a lot of praise from the new dawn administration. Is what has made the past come to my mind. The relationship between Huawei and UPND needs to be monitored.

UPND was the main government opponent at the time of the WSJ report. Growing online criticism may force the new dawn administration to spy on opponents and use the 2019 WSJ report to justify that.

Should Zambians, particularly UPND government critics, trust the Chinese technology giant, Huawei?

Meanwhile, it appears the new dawn administration is unconsciously trying to decriminalize the recording of one’s private parts.

A video of a lady playing with her private parts was recently shared on Twitter and Instagram. The lady in the video looks Like Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) boss Mary Chirwa.

Recording such acts is illegal in the country and many people have been prosecuted because of doing that.
Mary Chirwa has not reacted to the video. However, it appears the majority believe she is the one in the video. They want her to resign.

The new Dawn administration is defending Mis Chirwa arguing that everyone does it. If they succeed, it will mean decriminalization of recording of one’s private parts as will be very difficult to prosecute such an act in the future.

Anyway, back to the question, should Zambians trust the Chinese technology giant, Huawei?

Sesheke DC clears rumors of corruption on the ongoing census programme

2

Sesheke District Commissioner Alex Namenda has dispelled rumours that applicants for the 2022 census are being charged a fee before being recruited.

Mr Namenda has described the recruitment and training of the 2022 census of population and housing Enumerators in Sesheke in the Western province as well.

He said the process is ongoing well unlike what is reported in some sections of social media.

Mr Namenda said that it is disappointing that a person can openly accuse a very transparent process of being corrupt.

Mr Namenda who is also chairperson of the Census Committee in the district said the number of people who applied to participate in the exercise was bigger as compared to the number of participants needed.

He disclosed that on the first day, the number of people who attended the aptitude test was over 1,025 and the committee only needed 168 and65 motorbike riders.

Mr Namenda disclosed that the 65 motorbike riders were offered as a priority to the government workers from departments with motorbikes to curb the challenge of transport.

Mr Namenda explained that the whole process has been done fairly.

“This is what happens in a situation when the employment rate is very high,” he said.

And when contacted for a comment, Sesheke District Administrative officer (DAO) Albertina Kabatana was shocked that she has been accused of being corrupt during the census recruitment saying that she is one person who believes in delivering her duties accordingly.

Ms Kabatana said she will not let the accusations vanish as it has defamed her character.

She said she will stand in the courts of law to prove if ever she was charging participants for the 2022 census temporal recruitment.

Meanwhile, Mazabuka District Census Committee has urged Enumerators selected to participate in the 2022 Census of Population and Housing to be disciplined and committed to the national exercise, if they are to collect accurate information.

ZANIS reports that Mazabuka District Census Committee, Oliver Mulomba says it is through discipline and commitment that Enumerators would collect accurate information that would help the country’s development planning for the next 10 years.

Mr. Mulomba who is also Mazabuka District Commissioner, said failure by the Enumerators to collect accurate information during the exercise which is set to take place from August 18, 2022 to September 14, 2022 would negatively affect policy formulation and Government’s development planning agenda.

He said this when he officially opened the 10 days training for 2022 Census Enumerators at Makoye Secondary School in Mazabuka.

Mr. Mulomba further said the census committee did not expect to receive reports of Enumerators drinking alcohol on duty.

“You have been recruited by Government and as such your behaviour must be exemplary. Tame any wayward behaviour that you may have during this important national exercise otherwise, we are going to replace you,” he said.

Mr. Mulomba said government expects quality services from those called to serve and as such, those who felt they were not equal to the task were free to leave.

“We want you to focus on doing the work. Avoid sitting under a tree and entering wrong information. If some of you feel that you are not equal to the task or that the work will be too much for you, the door is open,” he said.

And Mr. Mulomba said many people who had applied as Enumerators had not been selected as the number of applicants exceeded the number of slots available.

He encouraged those who were selected not to ridicule their peers who were left out but to instead counsel them and urge them to look for other opportunities.

The Census of Population and Housing is an essential national exercise whose results are invaluable for both national and local policy formulation, planning and the effective targeting of resources.

Delay to receive agricultural inputs by farmers in Chipangali contributes to poor maize harvest

2

Most Food Reserve Agency (FRA) depots in Chipangali district in Eastern province, are filled up with Soya beans as most farmers have opted to sell their maize to briefcase buyers instead of the Agency.

A check revealed that farmers were mostly delivering Soya beans for sale at FRA depots while most of the maize was being sold to private buyers.

At Chitandika Depot, almost all the bags delivered were for Soya beans with only a few bags of maize delivered.

One of the farmers, Yamikani Phiri, attributed the lack of maize at the depot to the late acquisition of inputs by farmers during the previous farming season.

Mr Phiri said a lot of farmers did not receive full packs of fertilizer which, as a result, affected their maize yields.

He noted that the delay to receive agricultural inputs by farmers also contributed to poor maize harvest, which is now shown in the low delivery of maize by farmers to FRA depots in the district.

“Most farmers are only delivering Soya beans to FRA for sale because they either did not receive full packs of inputs or they did not receive the inputs on time. People in the villages do not have enough maize to sell to FRA because of what happened during the acquisition of inputs,” Mr Phiri said.

He noted that farmers have also opted to sell their maize to briefcase buyers who were offering K3 per kilogram which is equivalent to K150. per 50 kilogram bag of maize.

And at Mgubudu depot, the situation is the same with mostly soya beans being sold.

Sources at the Depot said most of the maize which was there was delivered by the Roman Catholic Church.

At Mgubudu trading center, farmers were seen selling their maize to private buyers and when asked, they said they would want to sell to private buyers because they would get their money immediately after they sold their crop.

Government has this year pegged the price of buying a 50-kilogram bag of white maize at K180 while Soya beans is being bought at K11 per kilogram translating into K550 per 50-kilogram bag of Soya beans.

Succession wrangles for Mwanachingwala chiefdom to be resolved outside court

2

The Mwanachingwala Chieftaincy factions have yesterday announced their decision to reconcile and settle the succession dispute outside courts.

Speaking on behalf of the Mwanachingwala family, Debson Hanambe said the family has come to the realization that succession wrangles are detrimental to the development of the chiefdom and have decided to settle the conflict and restore peace in the chiefdom.

Mr. Hanambe, who is the oldest of the five contenders further announced that all contenders will meet next month on September 9, for possible conclusion on the matter and select the successor on the same day.

“We have agreed to settle the matter outside the Court and go back home to choose the successor. We have agreed that on the 9th of September all contenders will come together to come to a conclusion and possibly select the right person on the same day,” he said

And Chieftainess Muwezwa of Itezhitezhi district says the decision by the disputing parties to settle the dispute out of Court sets a good example to the Country.

She said the Mwanachingwala Chiefdom is rich in natural resources, which risk being mismanaged by prolonged succession wrangles and has tasked the family to follow the right process as prescribed by tradition in selecting the next successor

“Am very happy that the royal members have come together to settle the matter out of court and to take it home. You’re one of our neighbours for Muwezwa chiefdom and you have rich natural resources and by prolonging the succession, all the animals and all the resources in the chiefdom will be gone,” he said

Meanwhile, Local Government and Rural Development Minister Garry Nkombo says the President is extremely happy with the resolve by the disputing parties to withdraw the matter from court and settle outside Court.

Mr Nkombo said government will not interfere in chiefdom succession disputes as clearly stated by President Hakainde Hichilema and has thanked the contenders for their decision to withdraw the matter from Court.

“Today is a very happy day for our President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema who after I took over office made a clear pronouncement that government will not interfere with affairs of chiefdom succession disputes,” he said.

He said succession matters cannot be resolved by the court or government.

He has since assured support to the family as it goes through the process of selecting a new successor.

“There is no court in this Country, I contempt there is also no government that can adjudicate over the issue of who is the suitable successor of any Chiefdom,” he said

Also present at the announcement was Chief Ndambo from Mwinilunga and Chief Chipepo of Chirundu and Gwembe.

The Mwanachingwala Chieftainship fell vacant after the death of Chief Mwanachingwala Charles Malambo in 2020.

Kagem Mining Limited in Lufwanyama has announced plans to increase emerald production

4

Kagem Mining Limited in Lufwanyama has announced plans to increase emerald production from the current 37.993kg to 50.758Kg in the next five years.

When Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo toured the mining firm on Monday, Kagem general manager Sanjeev Kumar said the company has projected a revenue generation of US$136.53 million in the next five years from the current revenue generation of US$ 100million.

Company general manager Sanjeev Kumar said the mining firm also expects emerald production of 50.758Kg in the next five years from the current 37.993kg in 2022.

Mr. Kumar said Kagem is seeking to grow its revenue generation to US$136.53m from US$100m this year.

He said the company saw a setback in 2020 when operations were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic in which revenue generation reduced to US$22.38m in 2020 from US$82.38m in 2019.

“The company’s operations were suspended for a year from March 2020 to March 2021 due to COVID-19 and during that period employees on leave continued getting their salaries with the support of Gemfield group,” Mr Kumar said.

Mr Kumar further highlighted Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes Kagem has embarked on in Lufwanyama.

He said Kagem plans to construct a skills training center in Lufwanyama which would enhance vocational skills in the area.

Mr Kumar said Kagem is determined to ensure that the local people benefited from its operations.

He added that the center would provide short course skills training and the trained youths would be considered priority for skills based employment in Kagem.

Meanwhile, Mr Matambo warned Kagem against the alleged continued sidelining of the local people when employing people.

The Copperbelt Minister urged the Kagem to prioritize job opportunities for the locals stating that it was disappointing that the company had continued to sideline the local people.

Mr Matambo has also expressed displeasure over the continued trend by the mine to discriminate against certain suppliers.

“Heal the wound of suppliers that were not given contracts in Kagem mine, give them a chance. There was total discrimination and this has been going on, people were suppressed and it has not been addressed. There were conditions attached to being a supplier for Kagem and it has to come to an end,” he said.

Mr Matambo also urged the mining firm to enhance its corporate social responsibility in its operational area.

Meanwhile, Mr Matambo was pleased with the investments so far and was happy that the company plans to grow its revenue generation.

He guaranteed Government commitment to supporting the company adding that Government would ensure to continue creating an environment that would attract more investment in the province.

Red Arrows Face Angolan Reunion in CAF Champions League, Zesco on Bye

1

Red Arrows and Zesco United know their opponents and potential adversaries respectively of the 2022/2023 CAF Inter-Club season following draws conducted on Tuesday in Cairo.

Arrows are in the CAF Champions League while Zesco United will campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup as both sides begin Zambia’s battle with just two continental slots this season after losing their extra spots due to the FAZ Super League club’s poor performances over the last couple of campaigns.

Arrows have a continental reunion awaiting them in the preliminary stage against Primero Agosto of Angola who will visit the Airmen in Lusaka in the first leg next month.

The Airmen and Agosto met in the second round of the 2021/2022 CAF Confederation Cup where they drew 0-0 in Lusaka and Arrows won 1-0 away in Luanda to advance to the pre-group stage where Tanzanian club Simba SC ejected them from the race.

That result in Angola also saw Arrows end a 34-year continental bogey for Zambian clubs against Angolan opposition.

Prior to that result, a Zambian club eliminated an Angola opponent from continental competition was in 1987 when Nkana ejected Recreativo da Caala.

And in September, Arrows must repeat that process as Zambian clubs begin their quest to return to the CAF top 12 and reclaim the privilege of the four continental lost they lost this season.

Meanwhile Zesco are on bye from September’s preliminary stage and will enter the CAF Confederation Cup in second round this October.

Zesco await winner of September’s tie between Royal AM of South Africa and eSwatini side Mbabane Highlanders.

Preliminary round dates have been set for September 9-11 for the first legs while the final leg will be played during the weekend of September 16-18.

Second round, first leg fixtures are set for October 7-9 and the return legs will be played during the weekend of October 14-16.

Zambia international Austin Chola Muwowo has hailed his recent move to FAZ Super Division giants Zesco United after returning from an unsuccessful spell in South Africa.

Muwowo joined Zesco on a two-year contract last week.

Speaking to the Zesco FC Media Team, former Orlando Pirates midfielder Muwowo promised to work hard at Zesco while targeting to gain match fitness.

Muwowo moved to Pirates in 2019 after an impressive season which saw the 26-year-old winger voted Zambian Player of the Year.

“It is nice to join a big club like ZESCO United because they are the biggest team in Zambia. It is exciting for me to be here because this team wants to win trophies every year and they want to be playing at the highest level in CAF. My mission here is to work extra hard and contribute towards the success of the team,” Muwowo said.

“I am working on my match fitness as you know I have not been playing football for a while now. I am pushing hard in training to get maximum fitness. I am positive I will get back to where I am supposed to be,” he said.

Muwowo played for Konkola Mine Police, Nkana and Forest Rangers before moving to South Africa.

The break in at Former President Edgar Lungu’s residence raise concern as PF blames UPND

45

The opposition Patriotic Front has blamed the break-in at former president Edgar Lungu’s residence on the New Dawn Administration.

Addressing the media today, PF National Chairperson for Information and Publicity Raphael Nakacinda said the breaking in is unique as it is the first time in the history of the country the house of the former Head of State has been broken into.

Hon Nakacinda believes that the move was well-orchestrated “possibly” under the supervision of a professional entity.

“What has happened today is unique. It’s unique in a sense that this is the first time in the history of this country and it’s unheard of globally to have a house of a former Head of State broken into suggesting that thieves broken into,” he said.

“We have every reason to believe that this is a well-orchestrated professional way, possibly under the supervision of professional entity and it’s an indictment on or against those that are in authority, in charge of security.”

The MCC narrated to the media what exactly transpired regarding the incident in question.

“Yesterday, last night we received a report that conveniently ZESCO switched off power around 01:00. Neighbors here can attest to that in fact. What followed was the cutting to the power supply to the facility and the security wire that has been put in place,” he said.

“Now before we can give details to what has transpired from last night, I think it’s important to remind the Zambian people that the former Head of State is entitled by law to a certain outfit of security. But to have police officers withdrawn and only leaving two officers to look after him in a facility of this nature is reckless.”

Hon Nakacinda said President Hakainde Hichilema must be ashamed that under his watch, his predecessor is having people break into his house.

“They withdrew officers, the next thing they followed the Zambian aware of is that his ADC Aid Camp, responsible for his security was not only arrested on trumped up charges but also disarmed. Meaning that basically, putting the life of the former Head of State at risk,” he said.

“What has happened today can only be an indictment against President Hakainde Hichilema himself, Hon Jack Mwiimbu himself, the IG of the police because this is not only an embarrassment but reckless and should not have happened. How is that ZESCO conveniently at a time power went thieves came? Who coordinated that arrangement? Further, how is it that they knew the vulnerable area to access the house?”

He wondered why president Lungu, being a former Head of State is vulnerable.

Hon Nakacinda also wondered what kind of government UPND is as he accused it of putting that life of president Lungu and his family at risk. He said President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has been magnanimous enough to give President Hakainde Hichilema space to govern.

“Mr Hakainde Hichilema here, you must take personal responsibility. Your brother’s life is at stake and you are the number one citizen. He is the one that handed over power to you. Take responsibility,” he said.

According to Zambia Police, Ibex Hill Police Station recorded a case of breaking into a building and Committing a felony therein which occurred at the Former Republican President’s residence His Excellency Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

Brief facts of the matter are that a report was received from Male Mayondi aged 42 of kabwata site and service attached under protective unit to the former president’s residence and on behalf of the family that unknown people broke into the house and stole two Sumsung smart television sets valued at K66,000.Entry and exit was gained through cutting electrical wire fence behind and climbed the wall fence, broke the main door and stole the items.

This occured on 09th August, 2022 between 01:00 and 06:00 hours which was the time of discovery by domestic workers of second street in ibex hill Lusaka .

Police visited the scene of crime and it was noted that criminals gained by cutting the electrical wire fence on the eastern side and its believed to be the same used as an exit .At the crime scene only one stand has been found in the next yard.

Police have instituted investigations into the matter.

Bus operators in Ndola fight running battles with police over new fares

5

Bus operators in Ndola District on the Copperbelt have fought running battles with police after they protested over the recently reduced bus fares as announced by the Road Transport and Safety Agency.

The aggrieved bus operators who have since downed tools blocked traffic at Mulungushi and Chisokone bus stations to stop any bus from leaving the stations while buses between Kitwe and Luanshya are also not loading in protest of the K7 downward adjustment on inter-mine/peri-urban routes.

Following the recent reduction of fuel pump prices by the energy regulation board which has resulted in the reduction of bus fares between K5 and K7, the bus operators are not happy with this move and are proposing a reduction of about K2.50 unlike a K5 which they say is too high.

The operators later become unruly after Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali tried to address them and started throwing stones.

And those talked to by Phoenix News are demanding that authorities allow them to maintain the current fares or have the recently announced fared reduced by a minimal amount.

And Transport Minister Frank Tayali said he has noted the concerns of the bus operators which he says will be addressed.

Road Transport and Safety Agency Head-Public Relations Fredrick Mubanga says the recently announced bus fares still stand but has disclosed that the agency will engage the operators this afternoon on the forward over the bus fares.

Earlier, Bus operators defied the recent reduction in bus fares and have continued implementing the old bus fares saying the new fares are not in the best interest of their business.

A check by Phoenix News at various bus stations in Lusaka has revealed that passengers are still paying the old fares as bus operators are rejecting any amount that reflects the newly approved fares.

Some bus operators have wondered how bus fares have been reduced by an excessive K5 which is not profitable on their part when fuel pump prices were reduced by about K3.

The operators have complained that the bus fares announced by the road transport and safety agency and the current fuel prices are not in harmony as reducing fares will be loss making on their part and have since appealed to relevant authorities to reconsider the revised fares.

Meanwhile some commuters talked to have confirmed that they are still paying the old fares, and are calling on the authorities to quickly deal with the matter and strike a balance if possible for them to enjoy the benefits of reduced fuel prices.
