Zambia’s financial stability under threat

19
Dr Denny Kalyalya

The Bank of Zambia has noted that weakening economic growth, load shedding and tightening liquidity in Zambia are threatening financial stability in the market.

And the Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee has maintained the policy rate, a key determinant in lending rates, at 10.25 percent.

BoZ Governor Denny Kalyalya says the committee took into account projected inflation remaining above the upper bound of the 6.8 percent target range, tightened liquidity and reduced production owing to electricity challenges.

Dr. Kalyalya noted that increased food prices owing to droughts in the last farming season have also had a negative toll on inflation.

He says the above factors required the upward adjustment for the policy rate but the Central Bank had to hold it pending some measures by the Ministry of Finance.

Speaking during the MPC quarterly briefing in Lusaka today Dr. Kalyalya noted that global growth has equally weakened with demand for copper by China having reduced owing to decline in investment in emerging markets and reduction in global trade due to ongoing trade tensions between the USA and China among others.

And Bank of Zambia Deputy Governor Operations Francis Chipimo said access to finance has remained a challenge for private sector growth and investment.

Dr. Chipimo however said there are a lot of developmental issues being undertaken aimed at enabling the financial sector mobilize savings and lend money to investors with ideas.

Why 2021 is critical for ECL and HH

HH and President Lungu meet at late Munkombwe’s burial in Choma
HH and President Lungu meet at late Munkombwe’s burial in Choma

By Chimwemwe Mwanza

Vicious, vindictive and vengeful aptly describes the Zambian political arena. Former Presidents, Kenneth Kaunda, Rupiah Banda and the late Frederick Chiluba all have scars to prove this. In the 80’s, Kaunda locked up Chiluba on flimsy charges that failed to hold in a court of law. After he became Head of State, Chiluba retaliated by sending Kaunda to Mukobeko maximum prison.

The irony for Chiluba is that his handpicked successor, Levy Mwanawasa motivated Parliament to waive off the latter’s immunity thereby exposing Chiluba to several graft charges formulated by the now defunct Task Force on Corruption. With his legacy tainted by a skewed narrative, only death saved Chiluba from possible jail time. To erase his predecessor’s legacy and ensure his humiliation, the late Sata’s PF re-created this trend by consigning Rupiah to a life of court appearances.

Off significance to this conversation, UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema (HH) served time in Lilayi prison on a laughable treason charge – this at the hands of the current PF regime. For a fact, HH has never hidden his disdain for President Edgar Lungu and his stint in a tiny Lilayi prison cell has probably served to reinforce the UPND leader’s contempt for the President.

Just why such vindictiveness and blatant abuse of power seems to gratify incumbents is hard to understand. In the absence of reason, one might well speculate that this show of brutality is all about a naked flexing of political muscle – a bit more like, ‘can I show you who is the boss’. Whatever the reason, the difficulty is that this trend erodes the very democratic tenets and political maturity that Zambia is renowned for in the rest of Africa and the world over.

Which makes 2021 an interesting contest. Other than bread and butter issues, the fore mentioned factors will weigh heavily on the minds of both President Lungu and HH heading closer to the polls.

Who is likely to win?

The tiny but seismic shift in fundamentals on the ground seem to suggest that this will be a closely fought contest. Besides, recent electoral predictions across the globe – even by the most experienced pundits have gone against the grain making it even more difficult to provide an accurate outcome.

For example, in 2012, several analysts predicted an outright victory for Rupiah’s MMD only for the PF to spring a surprise. Suffice to acknowledge that, while characteristics of the Zambian electoral landscape may differ in comparison to mature democracies, there are similarities to draw from – especially in elections where the voter’s desire for change outweighs any other considerations.

Unaware of a groundswell desire for change, an over-confident former British Premier, David Cameroon called a snap referendum to determine Britain’s future in the European Union (EU). He was stunned at the outcome. Against odds, the British electorate voted for Brexit thus paving the way for what has now become Britain’s messy divorce from the EU trade block.

Humiliated by a razor thin loss to Brexit supporters, Cameroon was forced to call his time as leader of the conservative party. In yet one of the biggest election upsets of the 21st century, Donald Trump steam-rolled establishment candidate, Hillary Clinton to become the 45th President of the US. Therefore, the notion that either the PF or UPND might have an edge over the other heading towards 2021 is fallacious. Truth is, this is an election that could swing either way.

Why ECL will be desperate to win

Despite the PF’s public show of confidence, their determined focus on HH and constant whip-lashing of his perceived tribal inclinations, best illustrates their genuine fears and by extention their desperation. Rightly so, they can’t afford to be complacent. 2021 will be a referendum on their ten years in power. Be rest assured that this is one election where the PF’s well – oiled propaganda machinery will likely throw both the sink and kitchen at the UPND bearing in mind what is at stake. In fact, the proposed amendment to the constitution is intended to disadvantage the opposition ahead of the polls.

What troubles the mind is that the current constitution which the PF is attempting to discard was signed into law by the sitting President amid a jam-packed Independence stadium. Three years later, it’s tempting to ask. What has changed to warrant an amendment to this sacred document? By now, PF knows too well that the much-punted humility of their candidate might be a hard-sale more so to an electorate that appears too desperate for change. They can’t afford lethargic arguments such as they being the only party with a manifesto. Need they be reminded that having a manifesto is one thing and delivering on its content is another.

What about the promise that they would lower taxes and put more money in the pockets of the working class? Did they deliver on such including creation of job opportunities? You be the judge. The President is aware that he will be facing an electorate that is weary of rising food costs. A persistent drought over the last two seasons has only compounded the hunger situation – more so in outlying areas of the country. In addition, the policy uncertainty in mining taxation and the stand – off between government and sections of the mining community is taking its toll on economic growth. Perceptions around inaction on corruption might not help his cause either. While some of these challenges might not be, the PF’s making, the electorate always tend to punish a sitting government for their suffering – sometimes unfairly so.

Never mind whether HH has genuine or has yet to formulate charges against the PF, he has consistently warned that the PF leadership will be called to account for wrong doing once he becomes President. The tacit implication of this threat is that, HH is already extending bed spaces at Chimbokaila, Kamwala Remand and possibly Lilayi prisons for use by the PF leadership. And knowing fully well what is at stake, a possible loss is too ghastly for the PF to contemplate. For President Lungu, there will be no better motivation to win the polls than lose to a sworn rival.

Its State House or bust for HH

PF has over-exposed the country to a mountain of debt that will outlive generations to come. It is precisely why the 2021 polls will boil down to the economy. As a businessman, HH knows too well the implications of our foreign debt on the fiscus. Zambia can’t afford to keep borrowing to fund consumption and expenditure on non-productive sectors of the economy.

This is the message he has been selling the grassroots. For a fact, he has the support of the broader investment community, including some global mining giants. Most important though, the International Monetary Fund appears to have factored in his possible victory in 2021 hence their reluctance to engage the current government on a possible economic rescue package.

The question is, has the UPND leader’s message of change found resonance with the electorate? While he appeals to the affluent and middle class in Parklands, Kansenshi and Kabulonga, the grassroots in Mandevu, kwa Nagoli and Chamboli seem to be struggling to grasp his vision for the country. Be reminded that he desperately needs this voting block to win the elections.

Against the backdrop of challenges, this looks like HH’s election to lose. Fact is, he can’t afford a record of 4 election loses on the trot. Such a scenario will certainly cast him into political wilderness and the glue that’s bound the UPND together over the years will finally loosen. Is this what he wants?

It’s entirely up to him and how he manages his campaign otherwise it might just well be that he will once again fall short of expectation and hand the PF another 5 years in power. And him being such a vexatious litigant, our Supreme and Constitutional courts will likely be kept busy. Watch this space.

Government to create capital fund to support innovators

9

Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati has revealed that the government, working with partners, will create a venture capital fund, meant to support young innovators.

Mr Mutati acknowledged that funding remains a challenge for many young innovators in the country, limiting their ability to contribute to problem solving.

He also disclosed that the government will next month launch the HH Innovation Hub, in Lusaka, which will provide state of the art facilities for innovators in the country to undertake their work.

Mr Mutati said this when he officially opened the Seventh International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies (ICICT), hosted by the University of Zambia, in Lusaka.

He said the government has identified five building blocks to promote the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in solving some of the prevailing challenges in the country, such as climate change.

Mr Mutati has noted that data inadequacy is one of the limitations to the use of (AI) to innovate solutions, stressing the urgent need to address that, in the country.

He has indicated that digital infrastructure development is also key in supporting the effective use of A. I, hence the move by the government to connect all public Universities to the internet.

Mr Mutati has since challenged students at public universities to utilise the free internet to be able to come up with innovations that will contribute to the country’s development.

“In the next sitting in Parliament, we are going to present the innovators and inventors bill that will address one of the biggest challenges for innovators and this is called venture capital fund”, he announced.

The conference, held under the theme “Transforming Resilience: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning for Sustainable Solutions to Combat Climate Change and Environmental Challenges” is being attended by students, innovators, policymakers and practitioners.

Earlier, University of Zambia Chancellor, Mundial Muya who was represented by his deputy, Trywell Kalusopa, emphasised that challenges such as climate change provide an opportunity for the country to harness the potential of (AI) and technology for resilience and sustainable development.

“Artificial Intelligence provides predictive models that enable us to forecast droughts, floods and crop diseases with unprecedented accuracy”, Professor Muya stated.

He further expressed the University’s commitment to building capacity in emerging technologies, strengthening partnerships with government and the industry, as well as nurturing young innovators.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the conference, Jameson Mbale disclosed that papers presented at the event will be considered for inclusion in international databases, thereby opening pathways for global recognition.

“The conference also offers a platform for industry to demonstrate working prototypes, strengthening academia – industry linkages. Furthermore, selected works will be expanded into journal publications”, Professor Mbale said.

Chavuma residents concerned with emerging gay practices

7

Residents of Chavuma district in North-western province have urged the clergy, the traditional leadership and other stakeholders to address the slowly emerging gay practices in the district.

The community is concerned that these practices may undermine not only the district’s cultural and moral fabric but the nation’s morality at large.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ZANIS, Mary Namuchana, a concerned mother of three, expressed worry about the future of her children if such practices became the new adopted lifestyle.

“We need to protect our children from the influences that may lead them astray, also there is need for the churches and our traditional leaders to emphasise the importance of preserving traditional values and norms that have been passed down through generations and also preach the true word of God by discouraging same sex marriages or relationships,” Ms Namuchana said.

And Telephinia Chilufya, revealed that the emerging gay practices may erode the district’s cultural and moral values.

“Our culture is our identity and we must protect it, we cannot allow external influences to undermine our values and traditions,” she said.

Ms Chilufya noted that even though she was not born and bred in Chavuma, she has stayed there long enough to see that young people in the area are slowly being influenced by social media.

“If you patrol bars and markets in the evenings, you will find some culprits are slowly luring the young generations to make them believe it is the new normal and some are educated people sent to work here to develop the district but are now convincing the locals otherwise,’’ she explained.

The community is engaging in open discussions about the issue with some residents calling for greater awareness and understanding.

“We need to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone, we must work together to find solutions that benefit everyone, so it should start from churches, community meetings, traditional leaders and stakeholders in various communities,” said a Bread of Life Church member, Catherine Banda.

The residents of Chavuma district are determined to address the emerging gay practices in a way that is respectful and inclusive.

Maria Zaloumis Should not be Unfairly Favoured or Unfairly Punished

13

By Chanda Chisala

We were all surprised when businesswoman and social media influencer Maria Zaloumis was not arrested by the police following the infamous incident in which a poor young man, Enoch Kasengele, who allegedly tried to attack her at her farm ended up dying at the hospital. Zaloumis was clearly in the video of the incident (that she apparently recorded), so many expected she might be charged with at least something since she was part of the group interrogating the victim before his death. Instead, the police arrested all the men in the video (charged with murder), but claimed she had nothing to do with the crime.

After loud public outcry on social media, the police suddenly changed their minds and decided to also charge her with the crime of murder. To me, that was even more shocking than their earlier decision of not charging her with anything.

This is not a popular view, but I find this murder charge for Zaloumis disturbing, given what the police initially said about her. How did the police shift from “she’s absolutely totally innocent of any crime at all” to “she’s a dangerous murderer too” so quickly: that’s a very big leap. There is no way you can look at the same general evidence in this case and somehow shift from seeing someone as merely “the helpless victim of an attempted crime” to “one of the main villains” like some Hollywood movie with an implausible twist. Neither decision by the police inspires much confidence in the objectivity of the justice system – or at least the part where the police are involved.

It is disheartening to think that the police are able to just randomly charge someone with the highest crime due to loud social media pressure. Do they even know what they are doing? Surely there is some other crime on the spectrum between completely innocent “self-defense” on one end, and violent murder on the other end, if it’s true you are only looking at the evidence to make your decisions.

The reason the public was initially outraged was because they suspected the accused was left out of the arrests due to her connection to the chairwoman of the Electoral Commission of Zambia, Mwangala Zaloumis, who happens to be her mother. Photos of Zaloumis and the mother standing next to the president of Zambia himself soon popped up on many Facebook pages, with the obvious implication of who was supposedly behind the police inaction.

The public is right to vigilantly demand that no one should be above the law due to their connection to the corridors of power. On the other hand, no one should be treated unfairly due to that same “connection” to someone in power when pressure mounts on the police to act independently. They should follow evidence only, not fear of politicians and not pressure from the public.

There is a very plausible reason the police could have initially left Maria Zaloumis out of the high charge of murder specifically: as the only woman, it would not be totally shocking if she did not take part in the beating up of the victim. Yes, sometimes women can take part in such violent behaviour, but is it really hard to believe that she did not see the need to take part when there were many men in the same place? Besides, her hands were probably busy holding her cellphone to record the incident.

This does not mean she did nothing wrong. The police could have surely charged her of something in the first place, even as a passive participant, or indeed as the boss of the workers who took part in the crime. It would then be up to the prosecution to prove that she’s the one who ordered them to do the beating, and not her boyfriend – who appeared to be more in charge of the violent side in the video we saw. (We could see even the workers and Maria herself trying to translate to the Nigerian boyfriend the request of the nyanja-speaking victim to loosen the painful ropes he was tied with a bit, which probably indicates who was really in charge.)

Yes, we don’t want to live in a country where some people are shielded from the law due to their connections. But neither do we want anyone to be unfairly punished just because of that same connection. All we ask is that the police be objective, professional and independent, not favoring those connected to power, but also not reactively punishing those with some tenuous connection to power when social media pressure mounts. The eyes of Lady Justice must be blind all the way from arrest to final judgment, and she must also be deaf to the noise of public pressure to overreact when a popular (or unpopular) figure is involved. Only evidence and reason must guide the footsteps of this blind, deaf Lady as she dispenses justice in any civilised society.

Government Injects K200 Million into LASF to Secure Timely Pensions for Workers

5

For many retired public service workers who have endured long waits for their benefits, relief is on the horizon. The Government has released K200 million to the Local Authorities Superannuation Fund (LASF) to clear pension arrears and ensure retirees receive their dues without delay.

The announcement was made by Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Gift Sialubalo, MP, as he launched the LASF 2024–2026 Strategic Plan in Lusaka.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Sialubalo said the government recognises the hardships many retirees face when pensions are delayed, often leaving families struggling to meet basic needs. He assured workers that pensions will now be paid more promptly.

“Pensions are not a privilege; they are a right earned through years of dedicated service. They must be administered with fairness, urgency, and compassion,” Hon. Sialubalo said, drawing applause from attendees that included current workers and pensioners.

The Minister explained that the K200 million disbursement is part of the K400 million budgeted for LASF this year, bringing total government support to the fund to K1.6 billion since 2017. He said the funds reflect government’s commitment to restoring dignity for those who have served in local authorities across the country.

The newly launched 2024–2026 Strategic Plan sets out reforms designed to reduce the waiting period for pension payouts, strengthen accountability, and modernise LASF operations. It also seeks to review the LASF Act to ensure the system is more responsive to the needs of workers and retirees.

For pensioners like those in attendance, the reforms bring renewed hope. Many said they want to see the plan translate into real change at the community level, where long delays in pension payments have pushed retirees into financial hardship.

Hon. Sialubalo urged stakeholders, including local authorities, fund managers, and workers’ representatives, to support the implementation of the reforms. “This is about restoring trust and dignity. Every worker should retire knowing their service to the nation will be honoured,” he said.

With the reforms now in motion, retirees and workers alike are watching closely, hopeful that the pledge of timely and fair pensions will finally become a reality.

The case has sparked widespread attention due to the profile of some of the suspects and the brutal nature of the killing, with community members calling for swift justice.

Government to Enroll Nearly 800 Women in Mpulungu on Livelihood Programme

4

Mpulungu District in Northern Province is set to benefit from the Supporting Women’s Livelihood (SWL) programme, with 793 women expected to be enrolled this year.

The Department of Community Development has already commenced the selection process of potential beneficiaries who will receive productivity grants aimed at boosting small businesses.

Mpulungu District Community Development Assistant Officer, Doreen Chilufya, said during a self-registration exercise in Mungula Village that the initiative is designed to promote sustainability rather than dependency.

“We have started the selection process of potential women to be added to the Supporting Women’s Livelihoods initiative. We have been given a total number of 793 women to be added this year,” Ms. Chilufya said.

She stressed that the grants are not handouts but intended to be invested into income-generating activities. “We do not give money for consumption; this money is supposed to be multiplied so that women can sustain their livelihoods,” she explained.

Meanwhile, Mpulungu Member of Parliament, Leonard Mbao, encouraged potential beneficiaries to take advantage of social protection programmes being rolled out by government.

“The government remains resolute in addressing poverty through initiatives like Supporting Women’s Livelihoods and the Social Cash Transfer,” Mr. Mbao said. He urged the women to use the funds wisely to build decent and sustainable lives.

Mpulungu District Administrative Officer, George Chibuye, also appealed to selected beneficiaries to put the money to proper use by investing in viable businesses that can lift them out of poverty.

The SWL programme is part of government’s broader social protection strategy, targeting vulnerable households and promoting economic empowerment among women.

Hyena attacks 9-year-old in Lumezi

1

A nine-year-old girl of Lumezi District in Eastern Province is nursing injuries after being attacked by a hyena, marking the third such incident involving children in the area.

The attack happened on Wednesday, August 26, 2025, around 19:00 hours at Joseni Village in Nthitimila area, Chief Mwase of Lundazi District.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the development, identifying the victim as Keliness Phiri, aged nine, daughter of Juliet Nyirenda, 47, of Joseni Village.

“On 26th August, 2025, around 19:00 hours, the named juvenile was by the fire with her mother when the hyena appeared and attacked her. It scratched her with its claws, causing a laceration on her right ear and a bruise on the right side of her neck,” he said.

He added that the mother, with the help of other community members, managed to rescue the girl after shouting for help.

A check by ZANIS at Lumezi Mission Hospital found the child in a stable condition and receiving treatment.

ZCCM-IH crosses $1 billion market capitalisation mark

4

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, has commended ZCCM Investments Holdings (ZCCM-IH) Plc for crossing the $1 billion market capitalisation mark on the Lusaka Securities Exchange Plc (LuSE).

Mr Kabuswe reiterates that the milestone is attributed to the government’s good policy environment in the mining sector, among others.

Speaking when ZCCM-IH, together with LuSE, hosted a symbolic Bell-Ringing ceremony to celebrate the huge milestone, Mr Kabuswe observed that the government’s commitment towards unlocking the mining sector is bearing fruit.

“As the Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the board, management and staff of ZCCM-IH on this remarkable feat.

This milestone is not only a reflection of the company’s financial prowess but also a demonstration of their commitment to driving national development,” he said.

He said the enabling business environment that is currently prevailing in the nation instill confidence in investors.

Mr Kabuswe added that government has implemented various reforms to enhance the investment climate, including tax incentives and infrastructure upgrades.

The minister stressed that the company’s strategic investments in various mining companies have contributed significantly to the country’s economic growth.

He further observed that with its gold mandate, ZCCM-IH is poised to play an even more pivotal role in the development of Zambia’s gold sector.

Mr Kabuswe said the government’s decision to entrust ZCCM-IH with the responsibility of formalising, developing, and transforming the country’s gold sector will increase the value.

And ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson, Preston Musonda, said the moment is more than just a financial achievement, but a testament to the resilience and transformation of ZCCM-IH since 2021.

He stated that from guaranteeing a $1.7 billion Glencore debt in 2020 to a now strengthened balance sheet having resolved and unlocked Mopani and thus charting a new growth trajectory, ZCCM-IH has indeed emerged as a giant on the Lusaka Securities Exchange.

Mr Musonda explained that in the past eight months, the ZCCM-IH share price has gained 131 percent from K65 in January this year, to K150 per share as of yesterday, August 27, 2025.

He said crossing the $1 billion market capitalisation threshold places ZCCM-IH as the second most valuable company on the Exchange and strengthens the role as a central player in Zambia’s capital markets.

Earlier, Lusaka Securities Exchange Chief Executive Officer, Nicholas Kabaso, explained that Zambia’s capital market has deep and viable investment opportunities.

Mr Kabaso observed that the achievement comes at a time when there has been renewed mining activity within the economy with copper production being forecasted to grow above 800 metric tonnes for this year and above three million metric tons over the medium term.

Man commits suicide over witchcraft accusations

1

A 65-year-old man of Chama district in Eastern Province, has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree in the bush over allegations that he bewitched his second wife.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the incident stating that it occurred on the 27th August, 2025 at around 14:00 hrs in Nyembe village of chief Chibale.

The brief facts of the matter are that the deceased, Boyd Simukoko, married two wives, Maria Namfukwe, the first one and Setelina Kaluba, the second one.

The second wife had been ill for a long time suffering from swollen legs and stomach.

Mr Mweemba stated that the children of the second wife called a witch doctor, known as “Twapachalo,” who claimed that their father was behind their mother’s illness.

He explained that when the children confronted their father about the allegations, he expressed ignorance.

However, later that afternoon, Mr Simukoko went into the bush, about 50 metres away from his home, and committed suicide despite earlier telling his first wife that he was going to the farm.

An inquiry has been opened into the matter and the relatives have been advised to bury the body and mark the grave for possible exhumation.

Government loses K18.4million annually to defaulting Cooperatives

0

About 18.4 million Kwacha worth of revenue is being lost annually by government due to unpaid annual returns by cooperatives in the Country.

Small and Medium Enterprise Development Minister, Elias Mubanga disclosed that only 10 000 out of 139 000 registered cooperatives in the Country have been filing annual returns.

Mr Mubanga explained that all registered cooperatives are mandated to file 133 Kwacha annually as returns, in line with the cooperatives act number 29 of 1998, but bemoaned the low compliance levels.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka, Mr Mubanga explained that this has made it difficult for government to evaluate the performance of cooperatives in the Country which are expected to contribute to job creation and economic development.

The Minister has since warned that any failure to abide by payment of administrative fees, further emphasising that any defaulting cooperatives should not be allowed to access government empowerment programmes as well as artisanal mining licenses.

“Any defaulting cooperatives should not be allowed and I emphasise should not be allowed to access empowerment programmes such as those provided under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) in the Ministry of Agriculture Youth Empowerment Fund, citizens economic empowerment fund and artisanal mining licenses”, Mr Mubanga stressed.

Mr Mubanga noted that his Ministry will therefore collaborate with all government Ministries providing empowerment programmes to make it mandatory for any cooperative applying for such to attach evidence of annual returns to their submissions.

“This requirement will also apply to artisanal mining whenever they are applying for licenses”, he stressed.

He has since urged all cooperatives in the Country to cooperate with the Ministry officers at provincial and district levels, by submitting their returns as mandated.

“The deadline for submission of returns is indicated on the cooperative societies management system on the Zamportal and falls within three months after the close of each respective cooperative’s financial year end”, the Minister indicated.

Sun Pharmaceuticals won remarkable judgments in the High Court and Supreme Court over the debt owed to it by the Development Bank of Zambia(DBZ).

It’s a debt arising from overpayments made by the company to DBZ during the service of its development loan.

Following this win, the family of Mr. John Kalenga, the late businessman and politician made their first appearance on the matter in 2018 to stake a claim against payouts that were made to the company.

The Kalenga children challenged the ownership of the firm claiming that following the death of their father in 2003, Director and CEO, Vinod Sadhu, illegally changed the ownership of the company to himself, spouse and son.

This matter has however been extensively litigated and settled in courts of law re-affirming the ownership of the company to belong to the Sadhus.

The primary issue revolved around the ownership and control of Sun Pharmaceuticals Limited, a company registered in Zambia in 1964.

History of Sun Pharmaceuticals Zambia

Sun Pharmaceuticals in Zambia has a history tied to Frank and Hirsch (Northern Rhodesia) Limited, a company established in 1963 that was later renamed Sun Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

After its owners sold their interests to Mr. John Kalenga. The company’s trajectory shifted significantly in the 1990s when the Sadhu family invested in the business and, began constructing Zambia’s first disposable syringe factory in Ndola, a project that encountered financial and political challenges.

Vinod Sadhu of Indian origin, subsequently took over the project and the associated loan.

The Sadhu family was later affirmed as the rightful owners of Sun Pharmaceuticals Limited by the Supreme Court of Zambia in February 2020 after lengthy appeals by the Kalenga family.

In 2022, Vinod and his son Uddit were detained and abducted by persons that purported to be police officers.

The officers claimed that the two had engaged in fraud in changing legal ownership of the company and had wrongfully received pay-out amounting to $20million belonging to Sun Pharmaceuticals.

The Sadhus sued the police officers and a member of the UPND in the Lusaka High Court for abduction and illegal detention.

At the same time, the Zambia Police and Anti-Corruption Commission acted on a report by the Kalenga family.

The Sadhus were required to be in the country as investigations on the ownership complaint were laid and being investigated.

When court documents dating back to 1997 were shown to both the ACC and the Zambia Police, the Sadhus were cleared and allowed to travel.

The Kalengas reported the George Kunda law firm that handled the Sun Pharmaceuticals case to the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) for fraud and unethical behaviour.

In July 2024, the LAZ Practioners’ Committee dismissed the complaint conclusing that the law firm was not in conflict and as demonstrated by various court judgement and rulings there was no nexus between the complainant and Sun Pharmaceuticals and that their father was a previous Director and bot a shaewhokder in Sun Pharmaceuticals.

The law firm also proceeded to sue the family Spokespersons, Gregory Chifire for repeated defamation against the law firm.

After their return to India while their lawyers pursued the outstanding compensation and pay-outs, a sinister fresh process was started that called for their arrest by the Zambia Police.

This came shortly after a strong report of their abduction and extortion was published in the United Kingdom that became critical in thwarting the election of Zambia’s, SADC and Afripol Candidate, Mubita Nawa to the Interpol.

He lost the election to VALDECY URQUIZA of Brazil.

It appears it’s this report and the impending pay-outs due to the Sadhus that has generated a grudge Interpol Red Alert report that has seen the detention and pending extradition of Uddit Sadhus to Zambia.

“Mr Mubita Nawa who is Police Commissioner and Director – Administration is being accused by the Sadhu family of being at the centre of this latest red alert against them.”

As at Monday 25th August 2025, an administrative deportation order had been issued for the repatriation of Uddit to Zambia even when the two countries have no signed treaty.

Brief Status of the Case

Allegations of fraud: The Kalenga family filed complaints with authorities, including the Anti-Corruption Commission, alleging the Sadhu family had fraudulently acquired their shares in the company.

The Kalengas also accused a law firm, George Kunda Legal Firm, of having a conflict of interest for representing Mr. Sadhu.

Court rulings:
The Sadhu family has consistently won in court. A series of rulings from Zambia’s High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court have upheld the Sadhu family as the rightful owners of Sun Pharmaceuticals.

The courts rejected the Kalengas’ various appeals, noting they did not exercise their right to join previous litigation.

Investigations and dismissals:
The Kalenga family’s allegations have been investigated and dismissed by multiple bodies.

The Anti-Corruption Commission closed the case twice due to lack of evidence of wrongdoing.

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) also cleared the George Kunda Legal Firm of any conflict of interest, stating there was no clear connection between the current Kalenga family complainants and the company.

Court order fulfillment: One of the complaints concerned the release of funds owed to Sun Pharmaceuticals.
Authorities explained these payments were made in accordance with court orders and were not illegal.
Kalenga family stance:
Despite the repeated legal losses, the Kalenga family has continued to seek government and Zambia Police intervention in the matter.

*Efforts to reach Mr. Mubita Nawa for comment were unsuccessful by press time.

North-Western Province Highest Performing Province In Zambia

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has ranked North-Western Province as the highest-performing province in Zambia, underscoring its central role in driving the country’s renewed economic ambitions.

UNDP Resident Representative, Dr. James Wakiaga, said recent investments such as the commissioning of the Kansanshi Mine S3 Expansion Project and the planned Lumwana Super Pit expansion, worth billions of Kwacha, mark a transformative era for the province.

“According to the data that informs the UNDP report, North-Western Province has a Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.673, making it the highest-performing province in the nation,” Dr. Wakiaga said in remarks delivered on his behalf by UNDP National Economist, Elda Chirwa.

He noted that the S3 expansion would not only boost national copper production but also create jobs, stimulate local businesses, and improve the living standards of people in the province.

The findings were shared during the presentation of the Human Development Report for North-Western Province, which highlights the links between climate change and human development.

President Hakainde Hichilema has revealed that Zambia is attracting fresh investment interest from Chinese business executives following his state visit to China last year.

Speaking after receiving a courtesy call from the executives at State House this afternoon, President Hichilema said the meeting focused on a wide range of investment opportunities available in the country.

“It is gratifying that our state visit to China last year has continued yielding positive results in terms of opening up our country for more investment and business opportunities that will create jobs for citizens, particularly the youth,” the President said.

The Chinese delegation expressed interest in key sectors including agriculture, mining, energy, manufacturing, and health. They further indicated their willingness to pursue joint ventures with Zambian citizens to ensure inclusive growth.

President Hichilema urged the investors to move swiftly in actualizing their commitments, stressing that Zambia has created an enabling environment for both local and foreign businesses to thrive.

If implemented, the planned investments are expected to create jobs, boost technology transfer, and expand Zambia’s export potential across regional and global markets—strengthening the country’s long-term economic competitiveness.
