The National Union for Communications Workers has urged Zampost Workers to go back to work following government’s commitment to help them collect the K20 million owed to them by partners which they can use to pay salaries.
Union General Secretary Richard Mulenga said government has also committed to help pay salaries at Zampost following a meeting held between the Union and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Communications Engineer Misheck Lungu.
In an Interview, Mr. Mulenga however disclosed that Zampost workers in other provinces have gone back to work with Lusaka being the only province where the sit in protest has continued.
He said there is no need to continue with the protests especially as government has committed to help settle the six months’ salary arrears.
Transport and Communications Minister Brian Mushimba recently said he is engaging the Ministry of Finance over the release of 50 million Kwacha to recapitalise Zampost.
Dr. Mushimba said that government wants to also help Zampost to collect 20 million Kwacha that it is owed.
He told ZNBC News in Lusaka that the recent go slow by workers at Zampost and TAZARA is retrogressive and explained that Ministry of Transport Permanent Secretary Misheck Lungu has been to both institutions to engage managements over the go slow.
Last week, the strike action by Zambia Postal Services Corporation workers entered the second month with no signs of them returning to work.
The Zambia National Farmers’ Union is concerned with some individuals that have been purporting to represent farmers and bringing confusion in the tobacco industry.
ZNFU Media and Public Relations Manager Calvin Kaleyi says lately, a Chilufya Chishala has been issuing statements surrounding the tobacco industry that have no substance but full of innuendos and malice.
Mr. Kaleyi said Mr. Chishala should stop masquerading as a farmers’ spokesperson, Tobacco Board of Zambia spokesperson and government spokesperson saying if indeed he is a farmer, his role is to produce crop and allow TBZ to handle policy issues together with the Ministry of Agriculture.
He said his attacks on authority are irresponsible as the doors for dialogue and consultation with relevant authority are always open to engage with.
Mr. Kaleyi said the problems in the tobacco industry have been existing for years and what the Ministry of agriculture is doing is just to correct the situation and sanitise it.
He said the non-sponsored tobacco Mr. Chishala is howling about over the 10 to 20% is smuggled into the country from Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania and this should not cause problems to genuine farmers who have cultivated the crop using correct laid down procedures.
Mr. Kaleyi said the no sponsored tobacco farmers who are genuine are not complaining as the 2% levy he is talking about is none of his business but that of TBZ, who in this case have authority to handle the matter together with merchants.
He said the Union is aware of the happenings at TBZ and if Mr. Chishala, who is actually a sent force, does not stop his unwarranted ranting over sector developments the Union shall be prompted to expose all that he has been doing and the goings on at TBZ, and how Mr. Chishala has been hooked in.
Mr. Kaleyi said the Union would also like to know his role at TBZ since he has no farmer constituency.
And since Mr. Chishala is always talking referring to Malawi, the Union is prompted to say what activities he had undertook in that country between 2007 and 2012 before they expose him.
Mr. Kaleyi said the Union shall also expose what he owes merchants so that the truth is known and what his motive is.
He said the Union is aware of his entire cartel bent on destroying the local tobacco industry for selfish motives and has urged Mr. Chishala to stop being ridiculous, a rubble rouser, and bringing confusion in the tobacco sector.
The Lusaka City Council has commenced the exercise of re-burying the 13 human remains which were exhumed by storm water last week.
The exercise will cost the Council about K10, 000 in fuel and purchase of special bags called “Cadaver bags” in which to park the remains in readiness for burial.
Lusaka City Council Public Relations Manager George Sichimba said the exercise could not be done last week because the remains were still submerged in water.
Mr. Sichimba has explained that the level of water has since gone down hence the commencement of the exercise yesterday.
Last week, Council workers discovered 13 human remains exhumed at Chingwere Cemetery due to heavy rains which were experienced in Lusaka.
The remains could not be re-buried because the part of the cemetery where the incident occurred was still water logged.
This was the second time the unfortunate occurrence was happening this year. On 11th February 2019, a similar occurrence happened at the same cemetery though at a different spot.
The Council engaged a contractor, Treo Zambia Limited to construct the main permanent drainage to mitigate future occurrences.

The President who was flanked by Minister of Agriculture Michael Katambo and Minster of Health Chitalu Chilufya, stated that there was need for farmers to embrace climate change resilient measures, by practicing conservation farming, growing drought resistant crops and applying advice from technocrats, if they are to yield good crops.
The President is in Mibenge Chiefdom of Mansa district to officiate at a National Agriculture Field Day organized by the Zambia National Farmers’ Union and other stakeholders, to learn more on how the traditional leader has successfully grown maize and other crops.

Captain Nyambe expressed disappointment after he learnt that a bucket of maize which was previously going at K20 is now being sold at K80, leaving residents with no choice but to experience severe hunger in their homes.
He said it was unfortunate that the local businessmen and women are taking advantage of the people by hiking the prices of maize, describing the situation as total exploitation of the poor.
The District Commissioner said despite the completion of the distribution exercise of the 2000 bags of maize, there is need for more relief food in the area due to severe hunger being experienced in the area.
He has since appealed to DMMU for more maize that will include more people following the cry for help from residents who did not receive maize.
Captain Nyambe has since urged residents not to give up, but to also look into growing drought resistant crops in the next farming season.
United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema has thanked his former Vice President Mr. Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba for the services he rendered to the party in the party’s quest to run the country better.
In a brief reacting to news of his formaer vice president rejoining the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) party, Mr Hichilema said that he wished his brother , GBM, all the best in his new journey and future endeavour.
Mr Hichilema further appealed to his party members and the nation to respect his former Vice President’s decision as it was his democratic right.
And UPND Spokesperson Charles Kakoma has also wished Mr. Mwamba the best in his new endeavor and thanked him for the period served as Party Vice President.
Mr. Kakoma told ZNBC News in a telephone interview that now that Mr. Mwamba has re-joined the PF, the party will remain stable.
He explained that the party tried to reconcile the differences highlighted by Mr. Mwamba during his media briefing, but it did not work.
Earlier today, suspended United Party for National Development (UPND) Vice President Geoffrey Mwamba resigned from the opposition political party and rejoined the Patriotic Front (PF).
Mr Mwamba charged that UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has sidelined him in party affairs, and has been scheming to replace him as Vice President with National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Chishimba Kambwili and Democratic Party (DP) President Harry Kalaba whom the opposition party has been courting.
Addressing a press conference in Lusaka today, Mr Mwamba accused Mr Hichilema and UPND Secretary General Steven Katuka of disrespecting and isolating him.
Mr Mwamba said UPND party officials aligning themselves to him are being persecuted, with some officials having been suspended already.
He added that efforts by UPND Parliamentarians to mediate between Mr Hichilema and Mr Mwamba over the growing and widening divisions, failed to yield positive results.
Mr Mwamba has told the press briefing that the suspension and dissolution of the UPND political structures in Northern Province, is aimed at weakening his political presence and influence in the party.
Mr Mwamba charged that his suspension from the party and dissolution of UPND structures in Northern Province aligned to him were further aimed at blocking him from challenging Mr Hichilema at the planned convention for the party Presidency.
In an unprecedented move and demonstration of democracy, Mr Mwamba called on his supporters to form a political party, join an existing opposition political party or rejoin the PF.
In the midst of drumming, political cheering and ululations, his supporters resoundingly chanted in the affirmative to rejoin PF.
Mr Mwamba has also thanked traditional leadership in Southern Province and surrounding areas for welcoming him and helping him carry out his work.
The former PF Kasama Central Law maker and Minister of Defense, who served as UPND Vice President from 2016 to date, thanked the opposition party for having accorded him a chance to serve in the party.
He appealed to his supporters to desist from engaging in violence, but strive to work within the PF structures and establishments, in order to promote peace in the country.

Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi has told his charges that they need to show their 2019 title intent by winning home games starting with Wednesday’s rescheduled Week 6 game against Pool B leaders Green Eagles.
Nkana on Wednesday begin their challenging job of clearing their five-match league backlog following their CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal elimination last week.
“We have to do well especially at home. To win the league you have to start at home. We are playing Green Eagles and that’s a stubborn team but all we need to do is to prepare very well for the game on Wednesday and I am sure the boys will come out good,” Chambeshi said.
The match will come four days after Nkana beat their ailing archrivals Power Dynamos 2-0 away in the big Kitwe derby across the road at Arthur Davies Stadium.
That game was Nkana’s first league date since ending their continental obligations.
“It wasn’t easy in the derby and the team is fatigued after playing a big game like that one but we will put our heads together to see how we will handle the game against Green Eagles,” Chambeshi said.
The pressure is also on Nkana to redeem themselves at home where they lost 2-1 to Lumwana Radiants on March 30 in their last league home game.
But Nkana will continue to be without strikers Walter Bwalya and Fred Tshimenga including midfielder Harrison Chisala who are all out with long-term injuries.
Nkana are seventh on 12 points, twelve points behind leaders Eagles who come into the match on the back of an important 1-0 away win over Buildcon whom they toppled from top spot on Good Friday in Ndola.
Meanwhile, Nkana have won all their last four home games against Eagles but another win on Wednesday will see them stay put in sixth but edge them closer to the fringes of the top five where Napsa Stars occupy fifth spot on 17 points.

Suspended UPND vice-president Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has rejoined the PF.
Mr Mwamba said he was left with no option but to rejoin the ruling Patriotic Front.
He said he felt sidelined by the two leadership of the party who allegedly stopped involving him on decision making on the party.
Addressing a press briefing today, Mr Mwamba described UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema as a stubborn man.
He said a number of UPND Members of Parliament tried to reconcile the two but that Mr Hichilema refuses because he was “stubborn for nothing.”
Mr Mwamba said Mr Hichilema would do well to abolish the position of vice-president because it is irrelevant.
“HH has been having meetings with senior party officials that they should not align themselves with the vice-president…There fear is that I was going to challenge HH at the convention,” said Mr Mwamba.
He has vowed to dismantle UPND saying he will soon embark on a countrywide tour to de campaign the party.
Mr Mwamba said he will start with Kaputa where UPND National Chairperson Mutale Nalumango hails from.
He has also apologized to President Edgar Lungu “for all the insults he showered on him”.
Among those who flanked GBM was PAC leader Andyford Banda.
Mr Bwalya has since advised UPND members to change leaders starting with with Hakainde Hichilema or the chances of the party to form government will be in 2040.
Meanwhile, UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has thanked Mr Mwamba for the services rendered to UPND and wished him well in his future endeavors.
“We would like to thank our former Vice President Dr. Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba for the services he rendered to the party in our quest to run the country better. We wish our brother, GBM, all the best in his new journey and future endeavour,” he said.
“Further, we appeal to our party members and the nation to respect our brother’s (GBM’s) decision as it his democratic right. May God bless our country,” said Mr Hichilema.
Manasseh of great intellect
A great soul of matchless courage
He spoke more persuasively than ten thousand tongues
He spoke unspeakable words for the good of man
In humbler ways he went forth to fight a good fight
So when his glorious task was done
It was not of his fame we thought:
But of the pride with which he fought for all
“Hear Ye, Hear Ye!” he would yell
“Come gather, hear me speak”
“I’ve words you need to hear”
“Keep healthy, keep alive”
“That’s it for today”
“Until next time, goodbye”
The cadence of his farewell wafts in our souls
From the Angel’s booth he now speaks
Mines Minister Richard Musukwa says the ministry is in the process of identifying more slug dump sites also known as Black Mountains in a bid to empower youths for them to generate income.
Hon. Musukwa says the ministry is currently in discussion with various mining companies over the same matter.
He says modalities are being worked on to ensure youths access all the slug dump sites in the country.
He has since called on youths to exercise patience as Government negotiates for them to occupy some slug dump sites.

CSAWUZ General Secretary Joy Beene
The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has called for more global interaction among trade unions to find solutions to the challenges that computer technology advancement poses to the labour market.
ZCTU deputy Secretary-General, Joy Beene said the 4th Industrial Revolution, caused by rapid advancement of computer technology, has brought about challenges in which employers in some developed countries are declaring workers redundant and replacing them with automated technology in production processes.
Mr Beene who was flanked by Zambia National Union of Health and Allied Workers General Secretary, Kahilu Mundanya made the remarks when he paid a courtesy call on Zambia’s Ambassador to Turkey, Joseph Chilengi at the official residence in Ankara today.
“Let us not pretend, things are likely to change as we go into the future. We should not just sit idly by and probably go to sleep. We have to wake up and fully participate. We have examples in which some countries are doing away with workers because of technology. We are being told that is what we should prepare for in the near future,” he said.
The delegation was in Turkey to attend the three-day Confederation of Public Servants Trade Unions (MERMUR-SEN) International Conference and 6th Ordinary Congress under the theme: “Future of work, challenges and opportunities.”
The Conference attracted 300 international delegates.
“We should put to good use the little resources that we get from members’ subscriptions. If we can invest so that when hard times hit us, we shall still survive,” Mr Beene said.
He also said Turkish trade unions should be emulated for working with the Government and for their good working relations with the leadership of the country.
Mr Beene said in his address during the official opening of the conference, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan acknowledged the important role that trade unions play in national development and also thanked them for defending democracy by helping to thwart the 15th July 2016 attempted coup in which over 200 people were killed.
“We have learnt that it is important to work with the Government of the day to develop the country and ensure industrial harmony,” Mr Beene said.
Meanwhile, Dr Chilengi urged ZCTU to strengthen its research and planning unit in order to provide Government with policy options based on research.
He said President Edgar Lungu is a pragmatic leader whose decision-making and approach to running the country is evidence-based.
“Research and planning are very important aspects which should form the core of your function as trade unions under the leadership of ZCTU,” Dr Chilengi said.
