Copperbelt Minister Hon. Bowman Lusambo has announced the purchase of 2,000 match tickets for Under 20 matches to be played at Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

The open wing tickets at a total value of K20,000 will be distributed to all the four constituencies in Ndola to allow football fans to watch the prestigious tournament.

Hon. Lusambo said the gesture to donate the tickets is in line with President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s vision to use sport as a unifying factor in Zambia.

“His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has already set the tone by donating thousands of tickets to football lovers on numerous occasions and we feel this tournament is very important for the City of Ndola and fans should be accorded a chance to witness the occasion,” Hon. Lusambo commented.

The Minister who is also Kabushi Member of Parliament has since urged other Copperbelt based Members of Parliament to emulate the gesture and purchase some tickets for their constituents.

He said for tomorrow’s round of matches, the target is to have at least between 10,000-15,000 football fans benefit from the gesture hence the need for other MPs to purchase and donate the tickets.

“As leaders, I feel we have to own this tournament and buy some tickets in order to give chance to those football lovers in their areas we are coming from to enjoy the AFCON euphoria. By doing so, we will also be boosting the match attendance which is key for prospects of future hosting of even bigger tournaments.”

He said hosting the AFCON Under 20 tournament is a huge opportunity for the country to showcase its tremendous tourism offering and expose the country’s immense footballing talent.

“As Copperbelt Minister, it is my expectation that this tournament would be a springboard for some of our exciting young talents because I know there are a lot of football scouts who have descended on the country scouting for fresh talent.”

Hon. Lusambo also urged nationals of country’s participating in the tournaments resident in Zambia to come out and watch the matches and offer support to their respective national teams.

“We have a huge presence of South Africans living and working on the Copperbelt, we also have a lot of Sudanese, people from Cameroun and Senegal living here and it is important that they come out in large numbers to add colour to the matches,” he said.

The Copperbelt Minister further prodded the business community from participating countries who have set up investments in Zambia to seize the moment and offer support to their respective national sides as part of Corporate Social Responsibility by purchasing match tickets.

“A number of companies with origin from South Africa are present in Zambia and particularly on the Copperbelt, they should buy these tickets and let us fill up the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium for the remainder of the matches,” Hon. Lusambo stated.

ZNBC to finally beam the remaining AFCON Under 20 Games

37

State broadcaster ZNBC says it now will televise live the remaining Under 20 AFCON games on TV 1 and Radio.

This is after ZNBC engaged the Confederation of African Football with the help of the Football Association of Zambia.

ZNBC Corporate Affairs Manager Masuzyo Ndhlovu says the National Broadcaster has been granted broadcasting rights by CAF.

“Broadcast Rights in Africa is always a big issue and is big business,no politics involved but purely a Business deal. ZNBC will televise all the remaining AFCON games. Thanks to CAF and thanks FAZ.” said Mr. Ndhlovu

And ZNBC Director of Sales Peter Shula says the rights holders Lagadere have since reconsidered its earlier position assuring football fans that all the remaining games will be broadcast live.

Mr Shula says televising the games live will give an opportunity to over 6 million viewers to follow proceedings on TV1.

He has since called on the business community to take advantage and advertise their goods and services on TV1.

Shula was speaking at joint press briefing with FAZ General Secretary Ponga Liwewe at Mass media in Lusaka.

And Liwewe thanked CAF for ensuring that millions of Zambians have an opportunity to follow the games on TV1 because the stadium can only allow 51 thousand fans.

Earlier today, Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini has directed the Minister of Sports to explain why ZNBC TV 1 is not televising the on-going AFCON games.

Dr Matibini says the Minister of Sports should deliver a statement in Parliament by tomorrow.

This followed a point of order raised in Kabwe Central Member of Parliament Tutwa Ngulube.

Mr. Ngulube wanted to know whether the Minister was in order not to explain why ZNBC is not televising the games as promised.
Opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema also challenged ZNBC to stop collecting TV licence fees if it fails to screen the matches live.

Minister of Finance Felix Mutati has called for the commercialization of the National Road Fund Agency -NRFA- to enhance domestic resource mobilization for road maintenance.

Speaking during his last visit to Ivory Coast when he met Ivory Coast Road Fund Director General William Komenan, Mr. M Utati said NRFA will move away from the parastatal syndrome and mobilize finances by managing Zambia’s roads like business ventures.

He said NRFA should involve road users in the management of roads, through payment of Tolls and other Road User Charges.

The Minister emphasized the need to establish a system for financing road maintenance programs with clear accountability and regular technical and financial audits.

And NRFA Acting Director and Chief Executive Officer Wallace Mumba during a tour of some toll facilities run by government and Public Private Partnership said he would implement lessons learnt such as using tolls to get in the financial market and borrow fuds.

He said lessons learnt will be key in the NRFA’s transformation to becoming a commercial entity and ensuring its sustainability.

Meanwhile Lionel Atindehou Director of Operations of HKB an automated Public Private Partnership toll facility says the facility has helped citizen in fast clearance.

Copperbelt Minister Bowman Lusambo has directed the Kitwe City Council to halt the planned auctioning of goods seized from street vendors trading in undesignated places.

Mr. Lusambo has also instructed the local authority not to obtain a court order for their planned auction.

He says authorities at Kitwe City Council should instead wait for a meeting of all stakeholders to be convened this weekend.

Mr. Lusambo says there is need to find an amicable solution to street vending as opposed to confiscating and auctioning goods of vendors found wanting.

He says the solution may involve finding alternative trading areas for street vendors.

Mr. Lusambo said this in a telephone interview with ZNBC News .

PF must pay CAF and Televise Under 20 Games on ZNBC or Stop Collecting TV Levy-HH

21

HH speaking to Journalists outside the Cathedral
UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema

In their usual way of running affairs of our country and also taking advantage of the citizens, PF has failed to pay to the CAF for the live transmission of the under 20 games on ZNBC.

This failure by the PF and its Leader, Mr Edgar Lungu is not only detrimental but also a day light robbery on Zambians who have been paying tax in form of TV levy every month.

We demand on behalf the country that with immediate effect PF pays for the live transmission of the games because citizens have been compliant and if PF and ZNBC does not televise the games live, they must stop collecting tv levy as it is tantamount to theft.

ZNBC is a public broadcaster and must not only be seen transmitting live political rallies that we understand up to date PF has not paid for when Zambians have been paying TV levy.

It is also appalling to the PF leadership to continue globetrotting with a huge delegation around the world when part of the allowances they are spending could be spent paying CAF so that Citizens can enjoy the games.

ZNBC does not belong to PF but to Zambians and it must begin showing content that Zambians are pleased with and not PF political rhetoric.

When collecting TV levy, ZNBC says when you pay it will show, we further demand that since Zambians have been paying let them pay CAF and televise the games live.

This failure by PF to pay CAF and televise the games puts our country on the international spotlight as certain bodies will not be taking us serious with such world activities of great importance.

Meanwhile, we wish to once again congratulate the our Chipolopolo boys for winning the first game and today as they take on Mali we wish them all the very best.

My entire cabinet wanted to come with me to Israel-President Lungu

President Edgar Chagwa Lungu Plants a Tree at The Grove of the Nation in the Jerusalem Forest on Tuesday 28-02-2017

President Edgar Lungu has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his entire cabinet wanted to come with him to Israel.

President Lungu who is visiting Israel on a five-day state visit said his entire cabinet was excited about the trip and all his Ministers wanted to follow.

He said his entire cabinet wanted to come along for good reasons but that he could only carry eight Ministers.
President Lungu has travelled with Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Commerce, Trade and Industry, Energy, Tourism, Water Development and Environment, Transportation and Health.

He was speaking to the media on Tuesday afternoon after meeting Prime Minister Netanyahu at his office.

“Zambia have been friends with Israel on and off and this time around we will be friends forever. My Ministers are happy to be here and the entire cabinet wanted to be here for good reasons. The relationship has been enhanced by the establishment of an Embassy here from 2015 to now we have escalated our friendship much more,” President Lungu said.

“My visit is an opportunity to explore further areas of corporation especially in Water and energy, it’s a shame that we have a lot of water and we are coming here to learn. It’s not a coincidence because you have learnt how to find water from the sea,” he said.

President Lungu also stated that Zambia went through a lot of anguish when it broke off ties with Israel between 1973 to 1993 saying it is now time we strengthen the friendship.

At its peak, some 1,000 Jews lived in Zambia, though that number has dwindled to only about 30 today.

There are three Jewish cemeteries in the country.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Netanyahu has asked President Lungu to help Israel regain its observer status at the African Union, a position it lost in 2002 and has had trouble regaining, primarily because of the objection of South Africa and the North African Muslim states.

The Palestinian Authority enjoys this status in the AU and as a result Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is able each year to address the AU annual summit, something denied to Israel.
Zambia is one of the few African countries with a military attaché in Israel at its embassy which it opened in 2015.

Israel does not have an embassy in Zambia.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said after meeting President Lungu that his country “has undergone an amazing and admirable change in a transition to democracy since the ‘90s.”

He said that Israel hopes to “deepen its cooperation with the country, which I think is important for both our countries and both our peoples. I know that you’re opening a Jewish history museum in Zambia and soon a synagogue in the capital city. I hope one day I have the opportunity to visit those institutions and to visit Zambia.”

“I want to thank you for your friendship. It was well demonstrated in our meeting in Entebbe (Uganda) and we’ve been working together to strengthen and deepen the relations between Zambia and Israel. A year –and-a-half ago you opened an embassy in Israel and many, many of your Ministers have visited Israel recently and are visiting again today in fields of water, agriculture, education and also security, defence, anti-terrorism and many, many other areas,” Prime Minister Netanyahu said.

“We hope to send our experts to help with alternative energy, with water and other areas that we’ll discuss today. I look forward to deepening this cooperation, which I think is important for both our countries and both our peoples. I know that you’re opening a Jewish history museum in Zambia and soon a synagogue in the capital city. I hope one day I have the opportunity to visit those institutions and to visit Zambia.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu said however stated that the future of Zambia and the future of so many African countries is being challenged by the rise of radical Islam and the terrorism that is espouses.
He said radical Islam and the fanaticism that it instils in young people is a challenge to countries like Zambia.

“I think that it’s a battle between the past and the future. We firmly stand on the side of the future, of modernity,” he said.

“I just showed you, Mr. President, a relic from our past. We’re very proud of our past, our Biblical past and our modern effort to come back to our ancient land but we seek to develop a hopeful and bright future for our people and we are as equally committed to do that for the people of Africa. So, I think we have to seize the future together but also work together to defeat the forces that want to take us to a dark past.”

He added, “In seizing the future, Israel is coming back to Africa in more than a verbal way. After this visit to East Africa, I’ll be going to Togo in West Africa in a few months. There will be a summit there to discuss Israeli technology in so many areas, in agriculture, in water, in cyber security, in every field of technology. I hope that we’ll be able to meet once more within a few months. But in any case, I want to assure you of our friendship and our commitment to our relationship and that is why I welcome you on a red carpet.”

Zambian Breweries Reduces Price of Mosi and Castle, Citing Low Inflation and Stable Kwacha

Zambian Breweries beer brands –

Zambian Breweries has reduced the price of its Mosi and Castle lager amid growing confidence in economic stability.

The recommended retail price of a 375ml bottle of both lagers is now K7, reduced from K7.50.

Zambian Breweries Country Director Annabelle Degroot said the cut in price of the nation’s favourite beers was a response to the improved inflation rate and several months of a stable exchange rate. She thanked and commended the Government for implementing measures to allow this level of stability.

“In response to government’s efforts to maintain a stable business environment, we are committed to retaining the affordability of our products,” she said.

Zambian Breweries expects the price reduction to encourage drinkers to move away from cheap illegally brewed high-alcohol beverages that pose a danger to public safety as well as denying government tax revenue.

The Country Director explained that when beer prices drop, overall alcohol consumption does not increase but rather consumers tend to move away from cheaper higher alcohol options with an average ABV (alcohol by volume) of 43 percent, back into clear beer with an average ABV of 4.5 percent. This is an important driver of responsible alcohol consumption and government revenue collection.

The decision is also aimed at stimulating volume growth, tax revenue growth and its associated positive impact on investment, agriculture and employment.

Political Activist Dante Saunders (c) confers with Emily Sikazwe (r) and NGOCC chairperson Beatrice Grillo (l) during the meeting to demand for the release of the draft Zambia constitution
DANTE Saunders should stop masquerading as a political activist and come out in the open to declare his political interest because he has now proved to be a UPND cadre who thinks he can be relevant on the political arena by using his disguised position to discredit those in power, PF youths on the Copperbelt have said.

Commenting on a statement attributed to Mr. Saunders as having incited the UPND never to recognize President Edgar Lungu as elected republican president, provincial youth chairperson Nathan Chanda said time for Mr. Saunders and the entire UPND to wake up from slumber and come to terms with reality that President Lungu was an elected republican President was now and that living in denial would not change the state of affairs.

Mr. Chanda noted with disbelief that instead of remaining wholly uncorrupted and steadfast to his call as an activist who previously offered credible checks and balances to political players by holding them accountable for their shortcomings, Mr. Saunders had taken a partisan stance while holding on to a disguised position.

He said Mr. Saunders’ decision to align himself to the UPND and promote criminality by discrediting a democratically elected leader did not befit an individual of good standing in society and advised him to join politics because that was his constitutional right instead of playing double standards.

He said time for politicking was long gone and that what Zambians were looking for were patriotic statesmen who were ready to provide solutions to challenges the country was going through and not petty-minded individuals who were dividing the country further with the hope of propagating their political fortunes.

Stanbic commits to preserving Zambia’s culture and heritage

Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people at last week’s Nc’wala ceremony.

As traditional ceremonies’ potential to improve and strengthen tourism is noted

Stanbic Bank Zambia says that traditional ceremonies have the potential to improve and strengthen the social and cultural fabric of communities, as well as marketing the country’s tourism potential.
Speaking during the N’cwala Ceremony in Chipata this past weekend, Stanbic Bank Public Relations Manager Chanda Katongo said that the bank remains committed to preserving the country’s culture and heritage.
“Each society is built on heritage and traditions that are passed on to generations to preserve our culture. A country without a culture is lost, as culture encompasses our history, values and norms,” said Mrs Katongo.
Mrs. Katongo said that it is for this reason that the bank donated K50,000 towards the successful hosting of the N’cwala Ceremony, which is held annually to celebrate the first harvests of the year at Mutenguleni village near Chipata.
“Zambia is our home – We drive her growth. It remains a country with diverse cultures and through traditional ceremonies, we are able to reconnect with our roots not only as communities but as a nation in celebrating and encouraging our diversity,” she said.
“As a bank that has been rooted in Africa for the past 153 years, we realise the importance of our heritage and its preservation. With such ceremonies, future generations should continue to identify with their culture even as Zambia continues to engage the wider world,” she added.
Mrs. Katongo further commended President Edgar Lungu for declaring Chipata a city. “Stanbic has been in Chipata for six years and we are committing to the development of Chipata City.”
“Our strong suit as a Stanbic lies in our ability to provide our clients with knowledge- based banking solutions that add real value to their businesses. We will be on hand to provide financial and expert guidance on the various projects in the city,” said Mrs Katongo.
“There are a great many avenues and opportunities for economic and social growth, of which basic modern infrastructure is an essential component. The construction banking solution that we recently launched, seeks to address some of the financing challenges faced by contractors and others in the sector in obtaining long-term funding. And as a bank we remain committed to be part of Chipata’s infrastructure transformation into a modern city.”
Notable business infrastructure development projects supported by the bank include shopping malls such as Mukuba Mall, Kafubu, East Park, Manda Hill, Jacaranda, Cosmopolitan and Edgar Chagwa Lungu Mall in Kitwe. Others on a more massive scale include the North-Western Power project, the Zambia Sugar Plc ethanol plant (as part of a consortium of banks), and Zambeef Products’ milking parlour.
The bank’s investments have included well over US$150 million and US$575 million in infrastructure development and energy respectively over a period of 18 months as well as the raising and funding in excess of US$3bn worth of projects across the mining spectrum in Zambia from copper, cobalt, uranium and gold to lime manufacturing.

Africa is ready for industrial revolution – Microsoft

Microsoft has tipped Africa for an industrial revolution once the continent develops its value-added manufacturing sector. From government to the private sector and academia, the continent’s growth rests on manufacturing to help the continent grow and continue to support a rising population and growing middle class.
Amr Kamel, Microsoft’s General Manager for West, East, Central Africa and Indian Oceans Islands, notes that in 2014 30% of China’s GDP came from manufacturing, according to the World Bank, while comparatively, Nigeria’s GDP from manufacturing was just 9%, Kenya 12 % and Zambia at 8%.
“Africa is also at a crossroads. With a global focus on mitigating the effects of climate change and drastically reducing our carbon footprint, the world is on a mission to make the manufacturing industry cleaner, greener and more sustainable,” says Kamel.
He adds that traditionally, the heavy reliance on energy resources, infrastructural gaps and a skills and productivity shortage, has undermined the global competitiveness of Africa`s industrial sector.
“By leapfrogging to Industry 4.0, Africa can take advantage of greener, more productive technologies without being encumbered by outdated, energy and labour intensive processes. By leapfrogging, Africa will be closer to achieving sustainable and inclusive growth, and meaningful employment while safeguarding its natural assets,” he adds.
Kamel also notes that Africa’s manufacturers can achieve this by using big data to grow the continent’s manufacturing industry. Most manufacturers generate a huge amount of information, from the sourcing of materials to the marketing and distribution chain. Each of these functions has countless moving parts, both on the production line and off. Understanding and utilising all this data efficiently has become paramount in today’s age of information.
The Microsoft executive says that a revolution in manufacturing can be secured through:
Slashing costs: For most manufacturers, energy is the first or second highest cost (after labour). By using data, companies can make demand-driven decisions, for example running equipment in conjunction with fluctuations in consumer demand, to save energy.
Extending use cycles: Intelligence provided by IoT and big data provides predictive maintenance, which can keep equipment functioning optimally. By keeping machines in use for a longer period it reduces the need for new ones to be manufactured – lowering impact on the environment and saving costs.
Increasing efficiency: In addition to reducing downtime, new technologies make factories more efficient and save power. Data can also track labour output, for example managing shifts optimally to increase productivity.
Reducing waste and emissions – Technologies like IoT reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain by tracking and managing energy use.
Workforce optimisation: Companies can use data to balance workforce requirements. Reduced overtime expense can be a major source of savings.
Product inventory: Keeping product inventory for a long period of time comes at a cost. Manufacturers need to consider the cost of storage, any necessary insurance, maintenance and other factors.  Whenever possible, manufacturers will benefit from nimble and responsive manufacturing operations to avoid overproduction.
Product supply chains: Smart manufacturing will shift supply chains. There is a so-called “makers movement”, where companies are choosing local suppliers, connecting them with demand both close and far from home. It promises a more efficient form of production, and more sustainable processes where resources are re-used. For example, where bio-waste is used for feedstock or fed back into the production process. This leads to a circular economy, which brings the efficiency that is at the heart of smart manufacturing.
On turning Africa’s challenges into opportunities, he adds that the path towards green industrialisation on the continent can only be paved by the adoption of a combination of investment in innovative technologies, skills training, and the willingness to implement policies that identify green industrialisation as the backbone of the continent’s socioeconomic transformation.
Africa has proven its capacity to leapfrog. The world’s most ground-breaking mobile innovations come from the continent because of this ability. With bold leadership, we can do it again, and become a leader in Industry 4.0.

Pay CAF, televise under 20 games on ZNBC or stop collecting levy-HH

Government apologises to farmers for late delivery of fertilizer

Government has apologised to Kasempa farmers for the late delivery of Urea Fertiliser in the 2016/2017 farming season.

Speaking in an interview with Kfm news, Kasempa District Commissioner (DC) Goodson Sansakuwa said Government is aware that fertilizer distribution in the district was delayed this year.

The DC said the delay was caused by the suppliers who could not deliver the input in time despite being paid on time by Government.

Mr. Sansakuwa, however, was pleased to say that about 90% of the farmers have received the input and only about six truck loads are remaining to complete the consignment.

The DC said he  does not anticipate a bumper harvest this year but assured the farmers that government will put its house in order to deliver the input early in the coming farming season.

Msoni wants massive demonstration across the country to force Maizegate investigation

Opposition APC President Nason Msoni
Opposition APC President Nason Msoni

All People’s Congress Party (APC) President Nason Msoni has called for massive demonstration across the country to force President Lungu to act and ensure that the people involved in the Malawi maize deal are conclusively investigated.

Speaking when he called in during Hot FM’s breakfast show Mr Msoni said the opposition, students unions, the civil society, and worker unions in the country who are worth their sort should conduct massive peaceful demonstrations across the country so as to force Edgar Lungu to act on the people involved in the maize gate scandal.

Mr Msoni  said stakeholders have advised the President to drop Dora Siliya so as to pave way for investigation but the President is spiting in the face of the people advising him by flying with the same minister to engage in more corrupt deals together.

He said he is disappointed with the ACC who have seemingly remained mute on the matter when their colleagues in Malawi have done the work for them by naming the people involved in the deal from Zambia.

Mr Msoni said asusual they are waiting for instructions from the President like they did on former Information Minister Hon. Chishimba Kambwili.

commenting on the  posting on his Facebook page, the outspoken opposition leader said the breakdown of morality in the PF government is striking and worrying.

He said no one believes that a minister who is still subject to on-going serious allegations of improperiety could be seen flying high with the President of the country to an international engagment without first being absorbed or cleared of the questionable role she played in the Maize deal.

The APC leader  said the defiance by the Head of State to openly take on board a scandal laden minister sends a bad signal on the fight against corruption.

He also said the move also pokes the country’s neighbour in the eye who are still reeling from the Maize scandal in the eye.

He said the action by the President was a bad Judgment and reinforced the view that there is a mutual cover-up in the Maize deal.

The delegation to Israel includes cabinet ministers from Foreign Affairs  Harry Kalaba  , Agriculture Dora Siliya, Health Chitalu Sampa , Commerce and Industry Margaret Mwanakatwe, , Energy David Mabumba, , Tourism and Arts Charles Banda , Transport Brian Mushimba, among others.

Meanwhile the country’s largest student body has added the voice to have the minister of agriculture dropped from cabinet.

ZANASU Vice President Eddie Miyoba said Ms Siliya was not fit to be in the position until her name is cleared of any wrong doing in the exportation of maize to Malawi.

Miyoba said it is because of people like Dora Siliya that the country continues to be rated as one of the most corrupt country in the world.

“We  the students  demand the dismissal of Dora  Siliya with immediate effect,we purely believe that she is not fit to hold any government position she is no longer a woman of substance and honesty if at all she was.

Ms Siliya was in past allegedly involved the  Airport radder Installation scandal, the Pr Capita zamtel evaluation scandal, and now the Malawi maize scandal.
