Zesco stay second, Power sneak into 3rd place

2

Champions Zesco United on Wednesday showed their resolve to defend the FAZ Super Division title when they joined Zanaco at the top of the table.

Zesco beat Nakambala Leopards 2-1 away in Mazabuka in a midweek Week 3 rescheduled match to move to 17 points after seven games.

However, Zanaco top the table due to a better goal difference even though both teams are on 17 points.

Goals from winger Winston Kalengo and striker Jackson Mwanza aided the Ndola club to their third straight away win.

Kalengo broke the deadlock in the 40th minute before Mwanza doubled the lead after 46 minutes while Nakambala’s Junior Zulu reduced the score-line to 2-1 on 75 minutes.

The defeat left Nakambala stuck at the bottom of the table with three points from seven games.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Power Dynamos ended a three-match winless drought after beating Green Buffaloes 2-1 at Woodlands Stadium in another delayed midweek game.

The win moved Power from fifth into third place on the table with 13 points after seven games.

Wedson Nyirenda’s Buffaloes led just after three minutes with Diamond Chikwekwe opening the scores in the 3rd minute before defender Govenda Simwala equalised from the penalty spot thanks to referee Stanley Hachiwa’s 9th minute verdict.

The game was seemingly heading for a 1-1 draw before defender Christopher Munthali headed in the winner 10 minutes from time.

This is a huge relief to coach Tenant Chiluba and his players who had picked just a point from their last three games prior to the match against Buffaloes.

Several opposition political parties have backed government’s proposal to take to parliament non-contentious clauses of the draft Constitution for amendment.

People’s Party President Mike Mulongoti says there is need to be realistic about the constitution making process.

Mr. Mulongoti has since called on other stakeholders to accommodate government’s proposal as some of the issues in the document were proposed by the people.

He noted that the debate is centered more on recourses.

And Christian Democratic Party President Dan Pule said his party fully supports government’s proposal.

Dr. Pule said the country has missed several opportunities of getting a new constitution and that time to achieve consensus is now.

Meanwhile, All People’s Congress Party President Nason Msoni said the government’s plan shows good political will which stakeholders should embrace.

Mr. Msoni however, called on government to distribute the draft bill it intends to take to parliament so as to allay fears of doctoring of the document among stakeholders.

And the Green Party is also in support of Government’s proposed strategy to amend the current constitution.

Party President Peter Sinkamba says he supports the proposal to include only non-contentious clauses such as the presidential running mate and the 50 percent plus-one vote, ahead of the 2016 tripartite election.

Mr Sinkamba is also in support of Justice Minister Ngosa Simbyakula’s ministerial statement in Parliament that if stakeholders are agreeable to the government proposal, the first set of amendments could be taken to Parliament as early as the June 2015 sitting of parliament.

Government allocates land for Kalumbila households displaced by mine

1

Government has allocated 500 hectares of land to settle over 600 households that have been displaced by mining activities in Kalumbila area of Solwezi.

The move is aimed at ending a protracted land dispute on which to settle 605 households affected by mining activities in the area.

Speaking when he addressed the displaced families North western Province Minister Dawson Kafwaya said government is concerned about the plight of the affected families and has since allocated four hectares of land for farming activities in addition to the plots they have already been settled on.

And Mr Kafwaya is disappointed at the poor quality of housing units constructed by Kalumbila minerals for the displaced families.

The North-Western Province Minister expressed sadness at the lack of a clinic,
inadequate school infrastructure and the poor water reticulation for the people resettled by the mine.

Mr Kafwaya has since issued a 90 days ultimatum to Kalumbila mine to construct a clinic, a 1 by 2 classroom block and improve the water system in the resettlement area.

Efforts to get a comment from Kalumbila mine management on the matter failed by press time.

Kalulushi traders ‘take-over’ football pitch

The Kalulushi Municipal Council has warned traders selling in the football pitch of Masamba Primary School to stop as they were operating there illegally.

Public Relations Manager Beauty Undi said Luato market which was adjacent to Masamba School where the marketeers came from had a lot of space to accommodate everyone.

Ms. Undi told ZANIS in an interview in Kalulushi today that the marketeers decided to leave the market and started selling in the football pitch allegedly to attract customers.

She said the move by the marketeers to encroach the football pitch had worried the Council which sent police to remove them last month but to no avail as they went back a few days later.

She warned that her Council would not allow the situation to continue as the marketeers were trading in undesignated area and that the action was illegal and would not be supported.

But marketeers attributed their action to lack of trading spaces in the market hence opting to sell in the football pitch.

Group Spokesperson Alice Nalwimba further accused the Council of not being sincere in the matter alleging that officers even collected levies from them.

And District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Patrick Kaonga bemoaned the development as it had affected physical education lessons and other recreational activities by the pupils at the school.

Speaking when he addressed government departments and parastatals in Kafue today, Mr Mwaliteta says nepotism and tribalism in the civil service is affecting implementation of government projects.

He said if left unchecked the inefficiency and ineffectiveness in service delivery in the public service would continue.

He said civil servants must spearhead project implementation if the province is to develop.

Mr. Mwaliteta said most of civil servants spend their time on Facebook rather than doing government work.

He emphasized the need for civil servants in Kafue district to work hard if the Council in district is to attain Municipal status.

The provincial Minister bemoaned the bureaucracy in the civil service which delayed the implementation of projects in the province and Kafue district in particular.

And Kafue District Education Board Secretary Vincent Zgambo appealed to government to expedite the process of selecting a contractor for the construction of classroom blocks at Gota-gota and Chifwema primary schools in order to increase the enrolment rates of pupils at the two schools.

Patriotic Front (PF) National Youth Chairman Chishimba Kambwili has urged party members in Eastern Province to intensify the mobilisation of members ahead of the 2016 general elections.

And Mr. Kambwili has asked PF members who have presidential ambitions not to challenge President Edgar Lungu so that he can complete his two term in office.

Speaking when he met PF officials in Nyimba, Mr. Kambwili said President Lungu deserves two terms in office as president before being challenged.

Mr. Kambwili, who is also Minister of Information and Chief Government Spokesperson, has further asked party members in Eastern Province to be the first people to endorse Mr. Lungu as a sole candidate for 2016.

He said the 2016 presidential election campaigns should start from the Eastern Province where President Lungu comes from.

He said the people of Eastern Province were lucky to have produced two presidents in the 50 years of the country’s independence.

Mr. Kambwili, who admitted having presidential ambitions, stated that the people of Eastern Province should not be deceived by some officials who want to challenge President Lungu in the 2016 election because doing so would be costly for the party.

He said his fellow PF presidential hopefuls should wait until 2021 when President Lungu will constitutionally vacate office after completing his two terms in office.

The PF National Youth Chairman said President Lungu was so far working very hard to ensure that all the developmental projects that were initiated by the late President Michael Sata were completed.

He said many projects in various sectors of the economy were being implemented in Eastern province which he said will help the party to easily win the 2016 general elections.

And Nyimba District PF Chairperson Jackson Sakala told Mr. Kambwili that the mobilization of the party at grassroots level was going on smoothly.

Mr. Sakala said currently, the party was engaged in ward elections adding that it will soon be holding elections at district and constituency levels.

He has meanwhile commended government for embarking on various infrastructure development projects in Nyimba and other districts in Eastern Province.

He however appealed to the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) to consider speeding the process of electrifying villages in the area.

He told the Minister that the power utility company has been delaying to connect power in some village because it has no poles.

Mr. Kambwili is on a familiarization tour of media houses in Eastern Province.

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Chishimba Kambwili says he has nothing against former Petauke Member of Parliament Dora Siliya.

Mr. Kambwili however said he merely wants Ms. Siliya to apologise for alleged disparaging remarks against the Patriotic Front (PF) party and late President Michael Sata.

He said the PF has welcomed Ms. Siliya in the party but demanded that the former Petauke lawmaker should apologise for calling Mr. Sata and the PF names.

Mr. Kambwili, who is also Chief Government Spokesperson, has maintained that he will not accept Ms. Siliya until she apologises or dispel statements attributed to her in the media.

He said his sentiments on Siliya are not the party’s position but his own opinion as a party member who has great respect for late President Sata, the founder of the PF party.

He explained that he has been working with Ms. Siliya in Parliament since 2006 and finds nothing wrong to work with her in the party.

MR. Kambwili however noted that it will only be honourable for Ms. Siliya to give an apology for saying bad things against the party before she joined it.

And the minister said media reports suggesting that the PF has rejected Ms. Siliya should be dismissed because the truth was that the party has welcomed her.

Ms. Siliya was recently quoted in the media as saying that the three years which the PF has been in government were like xenophobic attacks where people used to kill each other with machetes.

Mr. Kambwili was speaking on Explorer Radio in Petauke in Eastern Province today.

The minister is in Eastern Province on a familiarisation tour of media houses.

He has since toured Valley FM in Nyimba and Explorer Radio and PASME FM in Petauke.

He has since called on the media to be responsible in their reporting to ensure that they do not promote hate speech.

Mr. Kambwili has also appealed to the media to highlight the developmental projects government was working on in various sectors.

PF Government wants to resell the EU bonds-Yamba

Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba
Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba

Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba has confirmed that the PF Government is considering refinancing the two Eurobonds when they fall due.

Refinancing of bonds refers to the reselling of existing instruments when they reach maturity to fresh financiers who will issue new conditions and new repayment schedules.

The two Eurobonds that the PF Government issued, one for US$750 million and another for US$1 billion are falling due in 2022 and 2024 respectively.

This will require government paying back the full principle amounts of S$750 million and US$1 billion besides the annual interest payment being made.

Mr Yamba told Journalists in Lusaka that Government is seriously considering reselling the debt to fresh financiers as a way of avoiding defaulting on the repayments.

He said talks have commenced with key stakeholders including the book runners who were involved in the two issuances on possibility of refinancing the bonds.

Mr Yamba also revealed that the other option is to set up a sinking fund which will hold certain amounts which could be redeemed at the time of making the fill payments on the bonds.

He said the sinking fund could be held in US dollar or in Kwacha but added that it would require setting aside funds which could ordinarily go into the social sector.

‘On refinancing, this involves asking prospecting financiers to buy that bond and give you a longer maturity period so that come 2024 or 2022, you don’t need the actual cash to pay back that bond and somebody buys that bond and gives you a longer maturity period, say more 20 years,’ Mr Yamba explained.

He added, ‘We are looking at these options and we shall ensure that there is no fiscal distress come 2022, so that the nation is comforted that there shall be no anxieties that we shall fall to pay back that bond come 2022 and 2024 when they fall due.’

Mr Yamba confirmed that Zambia’s total debt stock currently stands at 4.8 billion US dollars.

Katongo has been recalled to the Zambia fold for the first time since September, 2014.

Zesco United visit Nakambala eyeing top spot

1

Defending champions Zesco United look set to go top of the FAZ Super Division table on Wednesday as they visit strugggling Nakambala Leopards at Nakambala Stadium in Mazabuka.

Second placed Zesco could join leaders Zanaco at the summit of the table with victory in this rescheduled Week 3 game.

Zesco have 14 points, three behind Zanaco, and therefore must win by at least four goals to supplant the Bankers from the top on goal-difference.

George Lwandamina’s side, who have not been good travellers this season, must be at their best to prevent bottom placed Nakambala from recording their first win of the season.

Zesco had dropped points at Nkana and Green Buffaloes prior to beating Konkola Blades 1-0 in Chingola last Saturday.

As for Nakambala, they are coming from a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Zanaco.

A win for the Mazabuka club would lift them from the bottom into 14th place.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Power Dynamos take on Green Buffaloes at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka hoping to end their three-game winless streak.

The Tenant Chilumba coached Kitwe side have picked just one point from their last three games in which they been defeated twice.

Power are fifth on the table with 10 points while Wedson Nyirenda’s Buffaloes have eight points from six games.

The Arthur Davies outfit visits Buffaloes wounded after Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Nkana in the big Kitwe derby in Wusakile.

“It is a must win game for us after losing points in our last three games,” Power left winger Kelvin Mubanga said.

A victory on Wednesday can move Power from fifth into third position while Buffaloes have a chance to march into eigth place should they win.

Meanwhile, Power welcomes back striker Jimmy Ndhlovu who missed the Kitwe derby against his parent club Nkana owing to a clause in his loan deal.

Ndhlovu has scored four goals from five league games.

FQM FC fires coach Israel Mwanza

3

FAZ Division One North club FQM Operations FC have fired Israel Mwanza as club head coach.

The former Nchanga Rangers defender leaves FQM placed 12th on the table with eight points from seven games.

Mwanza joined the Solwezi club in 2013.

Club secretary Kenneth Nkhoma says Mwanza has been replaced by Clarence Sichondwe in an interim capacity.

The club’s away loss at Chambishi on Sunday could have sparked the coach’s dismissal.

“We parted company with coach Mwanza yesterday (Monday. We have been with him since 2013,” Nkhoma said.

He added:”the assistant coach Clarence Sichondwe he is the one who takes over in an interim capacity.”

Mwanza has coached “Mighty” Mufulira Wanderers after serving as assistant coach at Nchanga Rangers.
