Hospitalized First Republican President Kenneth Kaunda has continued making steady progress, his son, Colonel Panji Kaunda has revealed.

In an interview today, Colonel Kaunda said the founding President could be out of hospital in two days time if he continues regaining the strength.

“The Doctors are impressed with his progress since he came in the other day. They feel he could be discharged in two days if he regains enough strength,” Colonel Kaunda said.

Colonel Kaunda who is Deputy Minister of Transport, Works and Supply in the PF government urged Zambians to continue praying for Dr. Kaunda.

“We are grateful for all the prayers and encouragement we continue receiving, God is in control and all shall be well.”

“I would just like to appeal to people wishing to see the old man at the hospital not to come because Doctors really want him to rest,” he said.

Colonel Kaunda also stated that any latest developments regarding the burial programme would be communicated through normal government channels.

“As a family we just want the old man to rest, the burial and everything will be handled by government, am sure they will communicate.’

Dr. Kaunda was taken ill Friday evening after he complained of exhaustion following the death of his wife of 66 years, Mama Betty.

The funeral service for Mama Betty was yesterday cancelled and later postponed after Acting Secretary to the Cabinet Rolland Msiska announced to mourners gathered at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross that Dr. Kaunda had been hospitalized.

Call Out Seeds of Greatness

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“…God…calls those things which do not exist as though they did.”
(Romans 4:17, NKJV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Very often, we see potential in other people that they can’t see in themselves. When you speak vision into them, when you tell them what they can become, you can help set the direction for their life. Your words have the power to push people into their divine destiny. I believe that the reason some people are not living at their full potential is because no one has ever spoken faith into them. No one has taken the time to say, “Hey, you’re great at this. You’ve got a gift here. You’re going to do something amazing.”

I believe that one of our assignments in life is to call out the seeds of greatness in other people. Look around at who God has placed in your life. They’re not there by accident. Take time to study them. See what they’re good at. What are their gifts? What do they excel at? Don’t just think about it, speak vision into them. Tell them what they can become. Let your encouragement ignite the greatness on the inside. Help them rise up in confidence so they can be all God has called them to be!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, thank You for the people You’ve placed in my life. I choose to be faithful, to speak life and call forth the greatness in them. Thank You for bringing me to new levels as I help others rise higher, too, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

“This stadium has hosted big games before and Caf is very aware that this stadium is good,” said Lubowa.

He added that Uganda are not even thinking of an alternative venue since Namboole is Caf-approved.

Zambia beat Uganda 1-0 in the first leg two weeks ago in Ndola.

Over 100 PF slogan chanting thugs this morning attacked  UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema during the requiem mass for late Mama Betty Kaunda at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka.

Mr. Hichilema escaped the attacks after he was whisked away by his alert security team.

The PF cadres however managed to lynch UPND officials Edward Mumbi and William Banda in full view of police officers.

The cadres shouted that Mr. Hichilema should not be allowed to attend the funeral service.

By the time the cadres were descending on the UPND leader, he had already entered the Cathedral building were Mama Betty’s body was put in state.

And in interviews with Journalists shortly after the fracas, Mr. Hichilema accused President Michael Sata of hiring thugs to cause violence at the funeral service.

“These are Sata’s hired thugs, he is paying people to come and attack Hakainde. This is unacceptable and the Church should stand and denounce this violent conduct,” Mr. Hichilema said.

“I came here to pay my last respect to my mother, I went to the funeral house yesterday and today we are attacked. What kind of a country is Sata running?”

Meanwhile, Mr. Mumbi warned that the PF should not promote street anarchy because the UPND has the potential to fight back.

“It’s only that am a strong man, they attacked me, over 100 of them. My word to President Sata and Wynter Kabimba is that, if this is how they want to govern this country, let them be our match. We will fight to defend ourselves.”

And Council of Churches of Zambia General Secretary Suzanne Matale who witnessed the violence said the conduct of the PF cadres should be condemned in the strongest terms possible.

Reverend Matale said the Church in Zambia will not sit and watch Zambia degenerate into lawlessness.

She has since challenged President Sata to personally come out and condemn the actions of his cadres.

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema claimed the PF cadres have been given guns by the state to harass opposition members.

Mr Hichilema alleged that the police were facilitating the PF cadres’ vicious attack on opposition members.

He said the PF hooligans were using the state to brutalize people in the country. Mr Hichilema charged that the country under the governance of the PF government was degenerating into a failed state.

And Zambia Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM) President Edwin Sakala claimed that the PF government was dragging the country into bloodshed.

Mr Sakala said the PF government should not take the peace the country was enjoying for granted, saying the PF cadres hooliganism was breeding anarchy in the country.

And a senior citizen Godfrey Sakala expressed disgust with the behavior of the cadres, saying it was shameful that the cadres would behave in the manner they did when the country was mourning Mama Betty Kaunda.

Quick action by police this morning prevented Patriotic Front (PF) and United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres from clashing at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross as mourners arrived for the church service for late former First Lady Betty Kaunda.

The commotion erupted when some PF cadres tried to stop UPND cadre William Banda from entering the church.

PRESIDENT Michael Sata is expected here to attend the United Nations 67th General Assembly and deliver his maiden speech as well as taking part in the high level debates.

Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Mwaba Kasese-Bota told journalists at a briefing at the Zambian embassy that Mr Sata would deliver a speech on the rule of law and the democratic governance of Zambia.

Dr Bota said the President would on Monday give a statement on the rule of law before the official opening of the General Assembly.

“President Sata is one of the three representatives from the SADC region who is going to speak on the rule of law,” she said.

In the afternoon, Mr Sata would speak about peace building towards sustainable development at the high level debate hosted by Bangladesh and Deputised by Zambia.

Zambia is second chair of the UN peace building commission.

On Wednesday morning, the President would deliver his maiden speech to the General Assembly.

“This will be his maiden statement since he became President of Zambia,” Dr Bota said.

On Thursday, Mr Sata would discuss Zambia’s investment opportunities at the Africa-America business conference where he was expected to talk about job creation for youths and women.

In the afternoon, there would be an investment forum where potential investors have been invited to come listen to Zambia’s investment
profile.

On Friday, the President is expected to meet Zambians living in the Diaspora.

He is expected to be accompanied ministers, Given Lubinda for Foreign Affairs, Bob Sichinga for Commerce Trade and Industry, Sylvia Masebo for Tourism and Arts, and Finance deputy minister Miles Sampa.

Others are Attorney General Mumba Malila and other top government officials. Dr Bota said some of the issues that would take centre stage during the debate included MDGs which the country had been implementing since 2002 and came to an end in 2015.

“It is however gratifying to note that Zambia like other countries has made tremendous progress in trying to reach the targets of the set goals despite some challenges,” Dr Bota said.

She cited the MDG two on universal access to education which Zambia had exceeded the target of 80 per cent to 96 per cent.

She said the momentum should be accelerated that had been garnered in order to meet the targets of the remaining goals.

She said Zambia would also like the UN reforms to be discussed because the issue was long overdue citing the Security Council reforms where the country is a SADC representative on the Security Council reforms.

“In other words the reforms will be focused on building peace and stability,” Dr Bota said.

Detained Barotseland activists bemoans inhuman treatment

39

Kaoma Magistrate court has distanced itself from the inhuman treatment and harassment exhibited to the 17 detained Barotseland activists by a named police Criminal Investigations Officer (CIO) from the police command in Mongu.

The court heard this today when the matter came up for an application pursuant to section 213 of the Criminal Penal Code (CPC) to have an old indictment substituted with the fresh one carrying all the names of the Barotseland activists.

Magistrate Exorbious Zulu said the words expressed by the named CIO from Mongu to the 17 detained activists in Kaoma district did not in any way represent the police and the judiciary in the province.

This came to light when the detained activists complained to the court that a named CIO threatened that the detained activists will die in Kaoma state prisons and that the Magistrate determining their case will sentence them to five years imprisonment.

The detained Barotse activists, Mulasikwanda Chazele 59, and Sinonge Lutangu 45, told the court that on Wednesday this week, CIO, Mulimba used bad words and harassed them while in detention when he brought two more arrested Barotseland activists, Mulasikwanda Chazele 59, and Muyangwa Mungwaluku 36, to Kaoma prisons.

Mr Lutangu complained that their detention in prison is not safe as the officer has already determined their fate and that justice will not prevail.

But Magistrate Zulu assured the 17 detained Barotse activists that the police officers were professionals and that the words uttered by the police officer did not represent the police and the judiciary in the province other than himself.

Magistrate Zulu said the court will seek audience with the Police Commissioner, Fanwell Siandenge in Mongu so that such issues does not occur again especially that the matter is active in court and that they (Barotse activists) will be informed of the outcome from the Police Commissioner.

He said the activists should be treated with dignity and not to be subjected to inhuman treatment as they are all still innocent before the court of law.

Mr Zulu said the court will give them latitude to freely express their feelings and that no one should be intimidated adding that the court will only become harsh if they became a nuisance.

The 17 Barotseland activists have been charged and detained in Kaoma prisons for tearing 113 copies of the draft Zambian constitution valued at K 655,400.00, the property of the Republic of Zambia and idle and disorderly manner likely to cause breach of peace contrary to the laws of Zambia.

The matter has since been adjourned to the 4th and 5th of October, 2012 for trial.

Police warns politicians against issuing alarming statements

The Zambia Police has advised members of the public to be responsible in the manner in which they express themselves on various issues.

Inspector General of Police Stella Libongani observed that of late members of the public especially those in politics have been misusing their freedom of expression through different media houses both from the print and electronic to issue statements with the potential to divide the country based on tribe, place of origin, race among others.

Ms. Libongani said the culture of careless utterances is undesirable as it has the potential of plunging the country into ethnic conflicts and public disorder.

In a statement to ZANIS in Lusaka today, the Police Chief explained that statements of hate are not only unconstitutional but also amount to crimes as provided in the Zambian laws.

She said section 70(1) of the penal code chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia prescribes expressing or showing hatred, ridicule or contempt for persons because of race, tribe, place of origin or colour.

Ms. Libongani cited the recent statements attributed to United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema when he made a contribution on Sky FM radio’s ‘Sky Forum’ on September 11 in which he said that some tribes have sworn to eliminate Tonga politicians as one such cases and described it as unpleasant.

She further implored Zambians with information regarding individuals planning to commit an offence to merely go and report to the Police or any other relevant law enforcement agency.

She disclosed that the issue members of public have been making reference to about people making oaths to eliminate others is a matter the police is currently investigating.

Ms. Libongani, however, said it is not the desire of the police to restrict members of the public from expressing their views but that if the views boarder on offences the police will not relent but will instead enforce the law.

He observed that in Southern province there are plenty of goats that require a market to which farmers can supply their animals.

And on fish farming, President Sata said measures should be taken to improve the stocks of fish in Zambian rivers.

He said people will suffer if the stocks of fish are depleted as this would result in the general populace to lack certain vitamins associated with fish.

And on public service the President said government wants to see an accountable public service.

He said the public service should encompass everybody adding that District Commissioners should interact with the offices of parliamentarians despite their political affiliation.

Mr. Sata urged the house to assist government to come up with a transparent public service.
