Weekend Scorecard: Zambia’s missing bags arrive in Ndola

Zambia’s missing luggage popped up safely at the teams Ndola camp in the midst of Herve Renard’s attack on the sports ministry.

The team failed to train all of Monday morning after their kit went missing in transit in Nairobi from Khartoum en route back to Ndola on Sunday.

Zambia’s kit finally arrived after lunch on Monday but the team had by then lost a full-days training.

Herve Renard’s side then held a late afternoon practice at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola where they will host Ghana on June 9 in both sides second 2014 World Cup Group D qualifier.

Meanwhile the case of the missing bags came just 24 hours after Renard attacked the sports ministry for failing to look into the teams’ welfare.

This is after plans to charter a plane to Sudan and back fell and Zambia took a 10 hour hop from Johannesburg to Sudan last Thursday on a scheduled airline.

“It is not an excuse because I complain a lot about this before the game,” Renard said on Sunday at Ndola Airport after arriving from Sudan where the team had lost 2-0 in their opening Group D qualifier on June 2.

“So the responsibility of the loss is my responsibility because am not a strong man in this country to get what I want.”

Government asks law enforcement agencies to probe oil tenders

GOVERNMENT has urged the law enforcement agencies to carry out investigations to establish whether the oil tender awarded to two foreign firms to supply and deliver petroleum was done in a corrupt manner.

The reaction comes in view of newly elected MMD party president Nevers Mumba who said during his inauguration ceremony on Friday that the MMD had information on how the tenders had been corruptly awarded.

Dr Mumba said at Mulungushi International Conference Centre that the Gunvor and Trafigula oil scandal would soon bring the Patriotic Front (PF) Government to its knees.

“This oil saga will soon surface and we advise the Minister of Energy to ignore any political interference in this deal and reverse the unfortunate development.

“This singular act will result in the Zambian tax payer loosing US$43 million per year without adding the subsidy on pump price,” Dr Mumba said then.

Two foreign firms Guvnor Company and Trafigula Oil Company were last week picked by the Government as preferred bidders for supply and delivery of petroleum feed stock and two varieties of finished products.

On May 24, this year, the Zambia Public Procurement Authority (ZPPA) allowed the Mines, Energy and Water Development Ministry to start negotiations with preferred bidders following a long evaluation process.

Permanent Secretary in the ministry George Zulu said the Anti-Corruption Commission and other law investigative wings should probe any suspected corrupt deals in the oil tender as alleged by Dr Mumba.

He said contrary to Dr Mumba’s allegations, the oil tender procedure involved many stakeholders among others ZPPA, Energy Regulation Board and Indeni who carefully deliberated on the tenders.

Mr Zulu wondered how his ministry politically influenced the tenders when many key issues such as oil pricing and security of selected bidders were checked before any awards.

“The PF Government is fighting corruption in all angles. The oil tender is a purely government and public matter which was done transparently without being influenced by any political motive.

“There were 23 applicants (bidders) altogether but only two oil firms were successfully recognised. This process involved experts who don’t just advise by word of mouth but by putting things in writing and advised us before we arrived at any decision,” he said.

Mr Zulu said ACC and other law enforcement agencies should take keen interest and investigate such alarming allegations from some politicians who wanted to mislead Zambians.

“By acting in best of our country, I am prepared to die for this because no politics from PF, UPND or MMD influenced any officer on this oil tender. I am fully responsible as a controlling officer of what was done because the process was purely transparent,” he said.

He said Trafigula Oil Company which runs Puma Filling stations in Zambia was brought in by the previous MMD regime and the opposition party was aware about the company’s operations.

He said President Michael Sata should not be associated with corrupt transactions because the Government was working diligently to cleanse perceived corrupt practices in the country.

He said the PF Government reinstated ACC bill on abuse of authority of office which was removed by MMD so that the PF could be answerable to Zambians on corrupt transactions hence President Sata’s fight against the vice.

Gunvor Company was selected to supply and deliver 1.4 million tonnes of crude petroleum feedstock while Trafigula Oil Company would supply the 216,920,000 litres of diesel and 21,230,000 litres of unleaded petrol.

Mr Zulu urged the media to continue being a watchdog of members of the public and report objectively to inform and educate them on issues of public concerns.

SPORT and Youth Minister, Chishimba Kambwili has advised national soccer coach Herve Renard not to rush to the Press if aggrieved by members of staff at his ministry but dialogue with him.

Kambwili said in an interview yesterday that it was wrong to discuss administrative matters in the media and that any matters of concern should be dealt with through available channels of communication.

“This is anarchy and indiscipline to discuss my members of staff in the Press. We should not discuss issues of administration in the
newspapers. If FAZ and Renard have problems with any of my staff, they should come to me and not rush to the Press,” he said.

On arrival from Sudan on Sunday in Ndola, Renard accused director of sport Bernard Nakacinda of being one of the people who were not helpful to the Chipolopolo’s cause.Renard complained about the Chipolopolo’s travel arrangements where the African champions were made to use a commercial flight to Sudan for last weekend’s 2014 World Cup qualifier.

“I spoke before the game about travelling arrangements. Some people don’t want to help us especially the director of sport. We are not professionals, we are amateurs. I don’t like working like this,” he said.

Kambwili challenged FAZ and Renard to present facts to him and that he would then take action.

“They should come to me with facts and I will take action against such an official,” he said.

But FAZ vice-president, Boniface Mwamelo declined to comment on the matter saying he was yet to get a report from delegation leader, Happie Munkondya.
“I’m yet to get a report from the delegation leader. Basing on the report, we will take it forward,” Mwamelo said.

NGO asks PF government to set up copper refinery

A Non Governmental Organisation has advised the Patriotic Front Government to consider setting up a national copper refinery plant to maximize the income from the product.

Development Partnership International country Director Richard Musauka said in a statement in Lusaka yesterday that that once a copper refinery was established, investors could be taxed on refined copper products thereby address the taxation issues with mining companies.

Mr Musauka said the country was losing a lot of money as the by product that comes out of the refined copper is not accounted for.

“Once the copper refinery plant is setup, the by product can then be used in Zambia to boost the manufacturing sector, to develop industries across the country and to create the desperately needed jobs by our unemployed youths,” he said.

He said it was unfortunate that the majority of Zambians had remained poor even when the country was the major copper producer in the world.

“The country has failed to make use of the natural wealth properly. We need to begin to understand the secretly held by investors before the come to invest,” he said.

He said Zambia needed revenue from the mines to develop other sectors such as infrastructure, health, tourism, industrialisation and rural
development. He said the mining sector was still the lifeblood of the Zambian economy though Zambians had not fully benefited from the sector.

Luka Lungu: TP Mazembe An Exciting Challenge

Striker Luka Lungu has described his first five months at DR Congo giants TP Mazembe as an exciting challenge.

Lungu quit Faz Super Division Champions Power Dynamos last December to join Mazembe for an undisclosed fee.

Speaking to LT Sports in Kitwe, Lungu said he was enjoying to play for Mazembe.
He said his Zambian compatriots at the Lubumbashi based side helped him to settle quickly.

Lungu admitted that communication was a big challenge when he just arrived at the club.

“Yes, I am enjoying. At first only communication was a challenge but the arrival of Zambian players from the Africa Cup helped me a lot and i started playing freely,” He said.

Lungu added that while playing for Mazembe his dream of playing in Europe is still alive.

“It is in Europe where you can play good football, so i am still focusing on moving to Europe probably when my three year contract ends,” He said.

And Lungu says he is confident his team will win this season’s CAF Champions League.

Kaushi Warns Zambia Against Complacency

Ex-KK 11 Star Simon Kaushi Kaodi has warned Chipolopolo against complacency as Zambia campaigns for a place at the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

Zambia status as African champions suffered an embarrasing moment when Sudan beat them 2-0 in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier.

Kaodi said there is need for national team players to be more determined and committed if Zambia is to qualify to the World Cup.

“We can go to the world cup but we need more determination,commitment and responsibility,” he said.

“We should not grow big headed after winning the Africa cup, winning the Africa Cup is not winning the World Cup. We need to improve our game,” Kaodi, a silver medalist at the 1974 Africa Cup added.

He stated that Zambia is in a fair group which has Ghana and Lesotho as well.

“Our group is fair, we should not underate any team. Even if we beat them at the Africa Cup when we meet again it will be a new game,” Kaodi noted.

The vanquished national team returned from Sudan on Sunday.

This is something we say more often than we realize it. The more you say it, the more confusion you create for yourself. Think about how many times you have said “I don’t know” the past week alone.

You want to improve your life for the better, but you tell yourself “I don’t know” how to do it. You may want to make more money, but you say “I don’t know what to do to make more money.” You might want to meet the right person but you say: “I don’t know what to do to meet the right person.” You may want to improve your health but you say: “I don’t know what to do, to get better or lose weight or get stronger.” You may want to have a better relationship but you say” I just don’t know how to do it”.

Did you know that every time you say “I don’t know” you tell your subconscious mind and your inner powers that you don’t want to know what to do.

This is one of the rezones why change for the better is not coming our way as fast as we would expect it to be.

Every time we say: “I don’t know” we most likely mean that we are not sure of what we want. By doing so, we create more misery and confusion for ourselves and the road to our success.

Simply saying “I know” instead of “I don’t know” isn’t enough. You have to change that belief. Your subconscious mind and your inner powers respond to your beliefs. They follow your beliefs and create your life based on those beliefs. If you believe you don’t know – you’ll never know and you’ll create more confusion.

To end the confusion and struggle, you have to give your subconscious and your inner powers a new set of instructions.

Give theme new beliefs. Get rid of the old belief of: “I don’t know.”

Making these changes is a lot easier than you think. All you have to do is send the right messages to your subconscious mind and your inner powers. Once you do that they’ll create more joy, more clarity and a lot more success. The more you do it, the better you become at it.

Your inner powers can connect you to the people who will lead you to success. Your subconscious mind can bring you all the answers.

You may not know what to do. You may not know what you really want. You may not know how to achieve your goals.But your subconscious mind and your inner powers know.

They can give you the answers. They can bring you anything you want. You want answers, they’ll bring them. You want to make more money, they’ll show you how. You want to meet the right person, they’ll tell you what to do. You want to improve your health, they’ll guide you.

Your subconscious mind and your inner powers will bring you whatever you want. You have to communicate with them, guide them and instruct them. “Your wish is my command” that’s the way your subconscious mind operates.

Once you master the process, success becomes easy and you get more of what you want.

Remains of Zambezi plane crash victims found

The missionaries from Chitokoloki Mission Hospital, have been indentified as Errickson Katrina who was the Pilot, and his wife Jay Katrina.

Government had sent eight commandos from the Zambia Army who were searching for the bodies.

The Aircraft was also located in the Zambezi River.

Works , Supply Transport and Communications Permanent Secretary Major Francis Mamanga , North-western Province Minister Josphine Limata , and Zambezi District Commissioner Lawrence Kayumba were at the accident scene.

Meanwhile, hundred’s of Zambezi District Residents were along the banks of the Zambezi river waiting anxiously.

On Saturday, the pilot and his wife were flying from Chavuma where they had ferried some passengers to Chitokoloki Mission hospital when the accident happened around 16:00 hours.

The accident happened about five kilometers from Mize palace in Zambezi District.

A housewife has been advised to change her peculiar ways of parsimony and greediness in order to save her marriage.

Stella Njovu, 21, of John Laing was told by magistrate Morgan Kayanika that she had to be transparent and should learn to share with her husband’s relatives if she wanted her marriage to last.

Magistrate Kayanika said for every marriage to last, both should be transparent and share with relatives of their spouses to bring about harmony and unity in the marriage.He said it was rare for women to be hard-hearted because they were the ones that harmonised families.

“You should learn to share with your husband’s relatives, most especially your mother-in-law, or else you risk loosing a responsible husband who cares for you,” he said.

Njovu’s husband, Masuaso Banda, 27, said his wife was stingy and did not care for his elderly mother.He recalled that on one occasion, his mother came asking for K50.000 which he had given his wife to take the following morning.But to his dismay when he went visiting his mother, she told him that his wife did not deliver the money.

Banda said when he asked his wife, she started an argument which ended up in a fight with him and she even bit his nail off.He said the other time they had an argument was when he told her to take some fish which was lying idle in the fridge to his mother’s place as she did not have any food at the time.

She said none of her relatives were eating at their house, therefore,she expected the same her husband’s relatives.He told the court that his wife wanted to commit suicide for no reason, an act which instilled fear in him because he would have been blamed had she died.

He said if she did not change then he had no option but to terminate the marriage because he could not keep up with her weird behaviour.

But Njovu said the incident of trying to commit suicide happened years ago and that she had changed.When magistrate Kayanika asked why she attempted to end her life,Njovu just broke down and kept quiet.He said the root cause of the problem was that she was immature and needed some counselling in order for her to be prepared psychologically.

Magistrate Kayanika asked her husband to give her another chance because she had changed her attitude.

We are Still in Contention Despite Defeat,-Chris Katongo

African Champions, Zambia might have been beaten but are not yet out of contention for a maiden World Cup qualification slated for Brazil in 2014.

The African Kings suffered defeat in their first competitive match since winning this year’s Nations Cup.

The stunned Chipolopolo suffered in the heat of Khartoum where Sudan won 2-nil. Zambia left without talking to the media after the game.

But team Captain, Christopher Katongo remains optimistic of the team improving its performance in subsequent games.

Katongo said that the team now needs more support than ever before to remain focused ahead of this weekend’s encounter against Ghana.

Speaking on arrival at Ndola’s Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport, Katongo contend the team is still in contention for the qualification to Brazil.

And Some soccer fans in Lusaka have expressed disappointment with Zambia’s poor display against Sudan in Khartoum on Saturday evening.

In a random interview with Muvi TV Sport, the fans have attributed the loss to a wrong technical formation of the team.

Some are however still hopeful that the team will make it to the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

The 2012 African Champions lost two-nil TO the Sudanese who they beat 3-nil in Equatorial Guinea during the Africa cup of nations quarter final match earlier this year.

Empower us with skills and equipment not cash hand-outs, demand women in Western province

Women groups in Western Province have urged government to consider empowering them with pieces of equipment and capacity building instead money which they say was too little to make any impact in their lives.

And the women groups have appealed to the Patriotic Front government to stop using Members of Parliament in distributing empowering equipment, citing favouritism and corruption in the distribution process.

Last year, government distributed about 106 pieces of equipment which included hammer mills, block making machines, sewing machines, and oil extracting machines among others but almost all women clubs denied ever receiving the machinery meant for women empowerment which was being distributed by MPs.

Western Province Community Development Officer, Christopher Liswaniso,said his office has no information as to which women groups benefited from the pieces of equipment as most of the registered clubs are still crying for empowerment.

Mr Liswaniso explained that his office was not involved in the distribution of empowerment tools but was told by the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health headquarters in Lusaka that his office should take stock of all the equipment in the province which he said is proving to be impossible.

He noted that the tools were given to people who are not in recognized women clubs leaving clubs that genuinely wanted empowerment and that following up requires the same MPs who distributed to direct them where they took the tools.

Mr Liswaniso said at the moment there are only few hammer mills that can be traced, most of which are laying idle as they were given to those that have no use for them.

Speaking in separate meetings with the Minister of Gender and Child Development, Inonge Wina, in various districts of Western Province, the women appealed to government to consider empowering all clubs regardless of their political affiliation.

Some women disclosed that they were not considered for empowerment last year based on their political line while others blamed the Ministry of Community Development for not decentralizing the process of funding clubs as everything is done in Lusaka which they say takes too long.

But the minister said government is committed to ensuring that women empowerment is evenly distributed to all women in order to alleviate poverty especially among the marginalized.

Mrs Wina said her tour of districts in Western Province was to ensure that women are sensitized to form clubs in order for them to receive funding and pieces of equipment that would help change their economic status.

In her tour of Western Province, Mrs Wina met women groups in Kaoma,Lukulu, Kalabo, Senanga and Mongu.

She also conferred with heads departments to educate them on the new Gender and Child policies and urged them to consider streamlining gender in their budgeting and operations.

Sata London bound for the diamond Jubilee celebrations

President Michael Sata is on Monday expected in London, United Kingdom to participate in the diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The Jubilee celebrations are an event marking 60 years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth the second of the United Kingdom.

Zambian high commissioner to the United Kingdom Bizwayo Nkunika has confirmed to ZNBC’s Melesiana Phiri-Chibwe in London that President Sata and First lady Christine Kaseba are expected to attend a luncheon that will be hosted for the Queen at Malboro House in London on Wednesday.

Colonel Nkunika says Mr. Sata will also give a key note address at the special Commonwealth Economic forum which is part of the diamond jubilee celebrations.

Colonel Nkunika says President Sata’s first visit to the United Kingdom as a head of state for the Queen’s jubilee confirms the continued fraternal relations of the two countries.

Minister of Education attributes recent wave of riots in schools to poor administrative skills and lack of pupil governance

Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education Minister, John Phiri has attributed the recent wave of riots in schools across the country to poor administrative skills and lack of pupil governance in the affected schools.

Dr Phiri observed that the unprecedented wave of riots that have rocked the education sector is a clear indictment of failed leadership skills in school administrators that have been entrusted to manage the schools.

Dr Phiri implored school management, Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs) and other stakeholders to explore possibilities of introducing school councils which will give pupils a chance to democratically elect their own prefects as opposed to the current situation where prefects are chosen by school management.

Dr Phiri was speaking at the on-going first ever Eastern Province Education Indaba in Chipata aimed at reorienting education stakeholders on the PF’s manifesto on the education sector.

He, however, warned erring pupils and other students in the habit of rioting as a way of expressing their grievances whenever there were misunderstandings by destroying both private and public property of stern action.

And speaking at the same indaba, Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education Permanent Secretary, Miriam Chinyama, called for prudent utilization of government funds if the sector is to make a meaningful contribution to the socio-economic development of the country.

Mrs Chinyama said the Auditor General’s reports for the ministry have revealed widespread financial mismanagement that has impacted negatively on the provision of quality education to Zambians.

She urged Provincial Education Officers (PEOs) to be proactive and ensure that funds that government allocates goe to the intended programmes.

Earlier, outgoing Eastern Province Education Officer, Philila Jere, said her office had formulated a provincial strategic plan for schools in the region aimed at improving academic performance.

Ms Jere said the 2011-2013 strategic plan seeks to address some of the inadequacies that impacted negatively in bettering academic performances in the province.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has charged the Patriotic Front government is the worst ever in the history of Zambia’s politics.

Party deputy spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says the government has no direction with regards to guiding Zambia to economic prosperity.

Mr. Mweetwa says most of the decisions that government has made since ascending to power have exposed their inability to manage national affairs properly.

He has since charged that the retention of Malawian Judge Lovemore Chikopa in the country when he is not doing anything is a clear of how the PF government is bent at wasting tax payers%u2019 money.

Mr. Mweetwa says Zambians will judge the PF harshly for their failure to heed to the wishes of Zambians.

And United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema’s political direction has been questioned.

A governance activist, Maurice Malambo has wondered what type of direction the UPND leader is taking.

Mr. Malambo says that it seems that the UPND leader seem to have not yet recovered from last years tripartite election loss.

He added that the UPND leader should ensure that offers constructive debates and criticism.

He says that Mr. Hichilema’s condemnation on President Sata that he was responsible on the loss of lives in Kasama over a stampede as unfair.

Mr. Malambo says that the opposition should ensure that they offer constructive criticism other than politicking.
