Govt to soon announce successful bidder for the Ndola- Lusaka highway

7

Government says it will soon announce the successful bidder  awarded to work on the Ndola -Lusaka Road, and two major roads in Luanshya district.

The development follows the shortlisting of eligible applicants following an advertisement under the private public partnership where the final bidder will soon be announced.

ZANIS reports that Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo says the Ndola-Lusaka Road works will be extended to Luanshya district which will see the Luanshya- Masangano and the Luanshya- Fisenge roads get a face left.

“ The road works will be implemented at a reasonable rate unlike the previous government that quoted the works at $1,3 billion, “ he said.

In a related development, the Luanshya Municipal council will soon commence rehabilitating the infamous H-Figov road in the central business district at an estimated cost of K 4 million

Luanshya mayor Charles Mulenga disclosed that the local authority has already secured K1.5 million from the ward development funds and will begin the rehabilitation works.

“ The rehabilitation works will also include the replacing and repairing of streetlights in the central business district which will come at a separate cost, “Mr. Mulenga said.

He assured Luanshya residents that the council will ensure that the road works were completed before the onset of the rains.

The local authority is upgrading roads and clearing drainages in Kamirenda township and other parts of the district that were flood prone during the last rainy season.

Mr. Mulenga said the initiative to clear roads and drainages before the onset of the rains was taken as a proactive approach to abet flooding of the roads and houses.

Leadership is About Respect and Honour

20

Dr Nevers Sekwila Mumba

Mr and Mrs “Godless” had three children. The baby was called HUMANISM, the teenager was called SOCIALISM and the adult was called COMMUNISM. All the children call each other COMRADES.

I will never be a Socialist and I do not believe Zambia shall ever return to socialism. Life is progressive. Different ideologies serve different seasons. To insist on keeping an ideology whose purpose has expired is retrogressive in every sense.
I will never be a socialist because I am a Christian and Zambia shall not return to Socialism because she is now a Christian Nation.
In early 80’s our founding President Kenneth Kaunda decided to graduate his policy of humanism to the next level which he called SCIENTIFIC SOCIALISM. As a young Pastor in Kitwe, I led a group of Church leaders who opposed this intention. We fought until Dr Kaunda dropped the idea.

We understood then as we understand now that the underlying belief of socialism is that God is not the center of all activity but man. It further suggested that Christianity was a hindrance to the smooth propagation of socialism and its elder brother, communism.
It is for this reason we had so much persecution of Christians in Eastern Europe, USSR and China. We called these communities the IRON CURTAIN nations. The few Churches in these countries became known as “Under ground churches.” Christians were imprisoned, killed publicly sometimes being fed to lions in public arenas.

It is for this reason that the path of socialism cannot be the Zambian path as we have already chosen to become a Christian Nation.
I shall leave the discussion of the actual meaning the socialist ideology to a later date.

The reason for this short introductory note however, is to state that as much opposed as I am to socialism, I have no moral or even legal right to call those who believe in it as twits, minions or puppets. Leadership is about honor and respect for each other’s beliefs. That’s the intention of a democratic dispensation. I am therefore appalled by colleagues in the name of politics that belittle, insult and disrespect those who hold different views.

If one has an issue with a friend I hang out with, insulting or belittling me is not the mature way of expressing such a concern. State your case and let the people judge who has a more helpful friend.
Time to abandon politics of hate is now. We have an opportunity to start afresh as a nation. We can build a strong nation on the rainbow of our differences.

Let me close by stating that, it is an insult to my intellect and pan african spirit for someone to suggest that since I have friends in the Brenthurst Foundation then I have surrendered my brains to those friends. Those days are over. These days relationships must be mutually beneficial without a big and young brother. Zambia is not inferior to the US. We are partners who can agree and disagree on many things, and that we have done, many times. But we cannot be an island in a moving global community.

Let us integrate without losing who we are in the process. We are mature enough to achieve this.

Action Aid Zambia hands over manual on the management of Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries

5

Action Aid Zambia has handed over a user guide manual that facilitates fishers and communities to participate in the management and sustainable use of fisheries resources in Zambia to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

The user guide manual is aimed at re-orienting fisheries extension officers in the formation of community structures as well as in the effective collaboration with stakeholders in the management of and governance of fisheries resources.

ActionAid Zambia Country Director Nalucha Nganga Ziba highlighted that this is part of the “Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries” project that supports small scale fishers, especially women and youth, to advocate for national and regional policies and legal frameworks that favor management of fisheries resources, including security of tenure.

Ms Ziba cited that studies show that weak fisheries management, legal and institutional framework has resulted in the reduced accountability and transparent engagement of stakeholders in the fisheries resources. The weak fisheries management, legal and institutional framework coupled with inadequate capacity to implement regulations in the fisheries sector has resulted in reduced fish stocks in Zambia water bodies.

“It’s for this reason that we trust that this governance guide will go a long way in supplementing government efforts in sustainable management of fisheries in Zambia,” she said

And Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Makozo Chikote said that the guide will assist extension officers and other facilitators to bridge the existing gaps of applying incoherent approaches in the promotion of community participation in the management and governance of fisheries.

Mr Chikote added that the new dawn administration is keen on ensuring prudent and sustainable utilization of natural resources hence the need for fisheries to be properly managed and preserved as it is a source of livelihood for over 1 million people.

“Government is ready to change the image, create change and to walk the talk,” he said

Members of Parliament meet to find solution on human-animal conflict

8

Minister of Tourism, Rodney Sikumba yesterday met with Members of Parliament to find an amicable solution to challenges of human-animal conflict that have affected the country in the recent past.

Mr Sikumba noted that it is important for parliamentarians and Government to have dialogue over issues of human animal conflict.

Speaking whenhe met the members of Parliamentary Caucus on Wildlife Conservation, the Minister said instead of just tabling the matters before the floor of the House, a roundtable discussion is necessary for various stakeholders to appreciate the problems obtaining on the ground.

He said parliamentarians need to be involved more in resolving the issues collectively.

Mr Sikumba revealed that his ministry has resolved to make parliamentarians Honorary Wildlife Police Officers.

“My team and I this morning discussed that when we sit in the next five days or so, each and every one of you in the caucus will have to be honorary wildlife police officers. That we will expedite and we want you to be getting into the park at any given time to check on what is happening,” he said.

The Minister disclosed that the country only has 1,575 wildlife police officers across the country.

Mr Sikumba however said there is still a deficit of 4,800 wildlife police officers.

The Minister also bemoaned illegal activities in Game Management Areas like mining which he said exacerbates the human-animal conflict.

And different members of the Parliamentary Caucus on Wildlife Conservation bemoaned several issues of human animal conflict in their respective constituencies.

Katombola Member of Parliament, Clement Andeleki said elephants have been killing people and destroying crops making the situation susceptible to food insecurity.

Feira Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Tembo who also complained of an influx of elephants in his constituency accused wildlife police officers of acting swiftly when a person is found erring, a case which he said is not the same when people are under attack from animals.

And Bweengwa Member of Parliament, Kasautu Michelo complained of mining activities in Lochinver National Park saying the sound of machinery chases away animals.

“There is a company which is mining gypsum in my area and it’s like most of the animals have run away because of the noise. Our wildlife is being threatened,” he said.

New HIV infections among adolescents worry government

6

Government is not happy with the 42 percent of HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women.

Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo says the overall number of new HIV infections in the year 2021 has reduced to 38,000 in which 47 percent are the young people from the ages of 15 to 24 years which creates public concern.

Ms. Masebo was speaking in a speech read on her behalf by the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Lackson Kasonka at the Treatment Advocacy and Literacy Campaign (TALC) and National AIDS Council Stakeholders Consultative Dialogue Meeting in Lusaka yesterday.

Ms. Masebo said 14,611 new infections of HIV among young people is way too many.

She said there is need to raise awareness on preventive measures specifically to the people at risk such as adolescents and other priority populations as well as marginalizing populations so as not to leave anyone behind.

Ms. Masebo noted that this will give thrust to accelerate the reduction of new HIV infections from 38,000, adding that it will also give thrust towards decreasing the HIV prevalence from 11 percent to a single digit.

She said the Ministry’s HIV prevention focus lies in primary prevention such as abstinence and condom use, HIV testing, Elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV. Syphilis and viral Hepatitis, expanding knowledge and access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and reducing Sexual Transmitted Infections (STIs) among others.

And Phakama Africa Executive Director, Mwenya Chiti said adolescent girls and young people would like to see HIV prevention messages moves from the hospital to the local community where infections are happening.

Ms. Chiti has further called on the government to roll out the new HIV prevention options such as the ring.

Meanwhile, Network of Zambian People Living with HIV and AIDS (NZP+) Executive Director, Fred Chungu commended the government for the efforts it is making in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Ndola High Court has hears how a House-wife was involved in the murder of husband

9

The Ndola High Court has heard how a house-wife of Luanshya on the Copperbelt conspired with another man to allegedly murder her husband.

This is in a case in which Prudence Daka and Stanley Mutimba are charged with murdering Clarence Zulu last year.

Mutimba dumped the deceased’s body in the bush and went away with his vehicle.

According to Luanshya District police officer-in-charge Mukololo Mangelele, on August 29 last year, he received a call from Masala Police Station in Ndola that officers had apprehended Mutimba, of Lubuto Township, for a road traffic accident offence.

“I was told that the suspect was driving a Toyota Axio,” he said.

Mr Mangelele said after apprehending Mutimba and inspected the vehicle, they found what appeared like human blood inside the vehicle.

He said the vehicle was registered in the name of Clarence Chileshe Zulu of Luanshya.

“I, together with other officers made a follow up to Luanshya at Mr Zulu’s place, where I found Veronica Daka who confirmed to me that the owner of the house was Mr Zulu, who was also the owner of the vehicle. She also introduced her elder sister, Prudence Daka, the wife to Mr Zulu. She however told us that her sister was not around. After I informed the detective about what we found, he also informed me that Mutimba had opened up to officers during interviews and that he led officers where the body of Mr Zulu was dumped,” he said.

And crime scene officer inspector Grace Kalaba narrated how she received information of murder and that the suspect was willing to lead officers to where the offence was committed.

“I organised myself by carrying a police camera. The suspects led us to the Luanshya-Fisenge road where the suspect pointed at the body. I then physically inspected the body and saw two deep cuts and strings on the neck. I saw bruises on the left arm, on the waist and legs. The body was picked and deposited at Roan General Hospital mortuary,” she said.

Mrs Kalaba said after postmortem at the mortuary, she took pictures of the deceased.

“After postmortem, we were told the cause of death was due to excessive bleeding,” she said.

She said after taking pictures of the deceased in the mortuary, she was informed that there was a motor vehicle which had human-like blood.

Mrs Kalaba said she then swabbed and subjected both the blood from the deceased and from the vehicle for DNA analysis.

She said during the investigation, Mutimba said he was given the vehicle by a lady.

The matter has been adjourned to August 12.

UNESCO warns Victoria Falls could lose heritage status if hotel, golf course is built

20

The United Nations has informed the governments of Zambia and Zimbabwe that Victoria Falls could lose its unique heritage status if a hotel, golf course and a power station is built at the site.

The projects that are threatening the status of the Vic Falls are the planned Batoka hydro power project and the Raddison Blu Livingstone Hotel and Golf Course financed by NAPSA.

The UNESCO team has also called for a halt to the building of the 300-bed hotel in Livingstone.

According to The Times, the plans by the two countries’ governments have concerned UNESCo officials, as the golf course could disrupt an established elephant corridor.

Victoria Falls is the world’s largest sheet of falling water, featuring unique rock structures, and earned its world heritage site status in 1989.

Victoria Falls

The Times states a UNESCO report, written after officials visited the site for five days, cites the “inconsistency in the use of precise boundaries and buffer zones” on plans published by the authorities in Lusaka and Harare.

A lack of full transparency about ambitious projects on either side of the Zambezi river which feeds the falls is fuelling local rumours of corruption, the paper adds.

Although both countries are under huge pressure to improve their citizens’ access to power, heritage officials said the proposal for a new hydroelectric dam “should not proceed as currently proposed”.

If development pressed ahead, the area’s special status “could be considered to be in danger in the near future”, the delegation said.

The proposals are part of Zimbabwe government’s ambitions to improve domestic energy production and build a tourism sector worth $5 billion by 2025.

An unusually punchy report for the next meeting of the world heritage committee warned that the southern African site is “facing increasing threats” from a number of developments inside the protected area.

The UN body has the mandate to carry periodic assessments.

Zambia National Commission Secretary General for UNESCO, Charles Ndakala, led the monitoring team.

Tanyaradzwa Mundoga, Zimbabwe Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Ministry deputy director responsible for Natural Resources, said there is need to safeguard the natural habitat so as to keep Victoria Falls in its pristine state.

Tourism executive, Clement Mukwasi, who is Shearwater Adventures spokesperson, said the industry will be guided by the UNESCO findings.

Victoria Falls’ falling water blanket is about 1,7km wide and falls 108 metres down the gorge and is classified as the largest waterfall in the world.

The waterfall is within Victoria Falls National Park, which together with the Victoria Falls bridge, attract a significant number of tourists annually.

Time for Narrow Mindedness is over: Economists of the people must be political economist

14

By Fred M’membe President of the Socialist Party

Time for narrow mindedness and pettiness is over. We have to think big and broadly. We cannot encourage communalism or narrow mindedness, for no nation can be great whose people are narrow in thought or in action. Those who dominate us, those who dominate the world economy have their theories, their theoreticians and the media to disseminate them. We must also have our theoreticians among the ranks of the intellectuals; first of all, economists – those with a political sense, not economists to serve the transnational corporations. Economists must develop ideas based on profoundly scientific foundations and human experience and convey them to their people.

Today, economists of the people must be political economists; and politicians must be politicians with – if it is possible – a maximum of knowledge. Today that is really the basis on which the fate of humanity depends, the basis on which our struggles are being carried out. And the politicians who do not understand, or do not want to understand, or who do not strive to understand economics, are not worthy of exercising their duty.

Economically, we have to fully understand what is happening to the world economy, especially to the American and Chinese economies. It’s very important for us to understand what is happening to the world economy and not just narrowly focus on our bantustan economy. Today the trade frictions we are witnessing in the world all centre around the manufacturing sector. Over the past five years, the trade war between China and the US has intensified and will continue to escalate further.

A historical analysis of events shows that the bedrock of US political hegemony was a strong manufacturing sector. In recent decades, US manufacturing has shown an irreversible decline, despite government efforts to revive it. This decline has become one of the important sources for today’s global political and economic tensions. While it is very important to understand how competitive weakness has contributed to the decline of US manufacturing, a deeper understanding of the rules that govern production in the age of imperialism is needed. Since the mid-1990s, with the dominance of finance capital’s drive to maximise profits, US imperialism accelerated the move of their industrial base overseas, especially to the Global South and to China in particular. In parallel, there were other factors at play: productivity gains eliminated many jobs in the US and the lack of manufacturing investment resulted from finance capital investing where profits were greatest.

As a result of their inability to manufacture basic necessities during the Independence War from Great Britain, American military and political leaders quickly learned the vital importance of having a strong manufacturing sector that could supply strategic materials and manufactured goods. Thus, the American production system was born, first developed by the military, and then introduced into the American industrial sector where it continued to develop.

The American system has two connotations: the first refers to 19th century US economic protectionist ideas and policy practices against British free trade, known as the “Institutional American system”; the second refers to the rise of the 19th century US manufacturing system of mass production. Mechanisation of mass production – a standardised production system based on interchangeable parts and modules – is one of the main characteristics in the evolution of US manufacturing. The military and political hegemony achieved by the US after World War II became, over time, a paradox for US manufacturing. To maintain their political hegemony, the US was forced to make economic concessions to its allies, opening up its domestic market to the allies’ manufactured goods. As a result, foreign competitors gained greater market share and this contributed to the decline in such industries as auto, steel, and machine tools.

The US, however, maintained its innovative and long-term leadership in the military, aerospace, and electronic information industries, which generated high profit margins by leveraging the large amount of accumulated knowledge capital. For the US government, the problems of unemployment, the loss of skilled workers, a lack of self-sufficiency in defence-strategic goods, and the deterioration of regional economies brought about by the decline of domestic manufacturing are severe. Since the 1980s, the US has been waging trade wars, first against its allies and then against emerging developing powers. The economic contradictions within the US, represent an important reason why the world political and economic order has entered an era of conflict and turmoil, which US hegemonic power is unable to resolve.

As for China, with the world economy currently facing downward pressure, its domestic economic development is confronting many challenges. And it is necessary to understand the characteristics of China’s new economy’s development in the first two decades of the 21st century and what changes are expected for the following two. The first phase of China’s new economy’s development was from 2000 to 2019 and was characterised by less state regulation of capital, meaning the state supported rapid economic growth and capital grew with the expanded economic scale; however, investment in research and development grew relatively slowly. The new digital economy was driven less by technology and more by maximising the external benefits created by the socialist state, such as the increase in people’s disposable income, the improvement in logistics and transportation, and the expansion of the digital information infrastructure. The state had to absorb all the societal negative social impacts, including the widening income gap.

Starting in 2020, the new economy has been characterised by significantly greater state regulation of capital, meaning that both the investment industry and business owners of the new economy should follow the state-defined principles of promoting “quality development” and an “inclusive society”.

Investments in this new period are expected to focus on three main priorities: 1) smart optimisation of the supply chain, 2) import substitution of foreign-made technologies, especially in areas like industry-specific chip manufacturing, and 3) sustainable development, especially in those technologies facilitating the use of green energy.

The Chinese investment industry are expected not to blindly pursue the finance-driven game in the new economy. They are expected to pay attention to the qualitative development of the economy, based on a deeper understanding of the entire supply chain. Business owners, and especially the investment decision makers, are expected to closely align the benefits of their investment returns with the interests of the country and the well-being of the people and contribute to the sound development of the socialist market economy.

Fully equipped modern optical skills laboratory for eye sight Opened at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital

1

The Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital has opened a fully equipped modern optical skills laboratory for eye sight check-up and examination.

The high-tech optical laboratory was constructed by One Sight Zambia at a total cost of 3.5 million Kwacha.

Levy Mwanawasa Medical University Vice Chancellor Prof. Evelyn Chomba cited that the construction of the optical skills laboratory will ultimately culminate into efficient delivery of high-quality eye care services to the Zambian people.

Prof. Chomba added that the laboratory will improve the training of students in the refraction of eye care services in a way that is in line with the goal of producing highly qualified competent eye care health professionals.

“I commend One Sight Zambia for the construction of a laboratory that will solidify our mission to educate health professionals by using hands on and competence-based trends, and the emphasis there is hands on because that’s what we do in the laboratory,” she said

And One Sight Zambia Global President and Executive Director K-T Overbey highlighted that in order to develop a very important partnership focused on a common mission of helping everyone across Zambia to see clearly, One Sight Zambia working together with its partners will ensure that all Zambians have the opportunity to have their eyes examined and get the right spectacles that they need and deserve.

“This will help students learn better, adults and workers be more productive and provide for their families and contribute to their communities, it helps to make our roads safer as drivers can see clearly,” she said

She added that this will not only ensure that people have their eyes properly checked but it will also ensure that quality of care across the country continues, because this lab will enable all students and others caring for eyes to be able to practice and support the mission of the teaching hospital with hands-on experience and learning.

Meanwhile Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Administration Dr. George Magwende said that the launch of the advanced skills laboratory that comes with high tech equipment and furniture is highly appreciated and will surely be treasured not only by the hospital but by the Ministry of Health, as it will go a long way in improving eye health care in the country.

Dr. Magwende noted that the availability of this advanced equipment in the Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital is a provision of refining eye care services which will greatly benefit the Zambian citizens as the equipment will enable the hospital to operate at an optimal level and provide affordable eye wear to referred clients which is something that the Zambian people deserve.

“The optical skills lab will assist the hospital in providing all citizens with access to consistency high quality eye care and eye wear of Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital as a referral centre,” he said

He indicated that this generous contribution has been made possible by our all-weather partner One Sight Zambia which has been operating in Zambia since 2016 when they signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Health to support the government with improving eye care services across all the provinces in the country.

He added that the partnership with One Sight Zambia is of great benefit to the people, as One Sight Zambia employs sustainable models that provide permanent access to affordable and high-quality vision care to the Zambian people through working with the Ministry of Health.

“These locally termed initiatives are long term investments where One Sight provides the technical support, products and equipment whilst government provides personnel and space where eye units are established,” he said

Dr. Magwende explained that the handover of the optical skills laboratory is very important to Zambia as it is a signatory to Vision 2020 the right to sight, this initiative is a global campaign by World Health Organisation (WHO), that aims at galvanising support and effort towards elimination, avoidable and reversible blindness throughout the world especially in developing countries such as Zambia by the year 2020 which is now two years.

Nakacinda laughs of calls to have Former President Lungu’s benefits withdrawn

23

Patriotic Front (PF) Chairperson for Information and Publicity Raphael Nakacinda has laughed off threats by the New Dawn Administration to strip former president Edgar Lungu off of his benefits.

Following the remarks that president Lungu made when PF MPs went to pay solidarity to his wife Esther Lungu, Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe threatened that government will take the said action claiming that the former president is still politically active.

But Hon Nakacinda said the continued poking of president Lungu by President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND goes to undermine the Head of State’s capability to govern the country peacefully.

He said this when he addressed the media in Lusaka today.

“I want to address Mr Hakainde Hichilema as my elder brother. The bembas say mwikala patalala mwine apatalalika. Your continued poking of the former Head of State only goes to undermine your capability to govern this country peacefully,” he said.

“These little boys that are excited being in offices as ministers and so on like Haimbe are actually being used by external forces to undermine your office. President Hakainde Hichilema, the Patriotic Front and its members and all those that are supporters of president Edgar Lungu and supporters of the opposition political parties have nothing to lose.”

Hon Nakacinda also said there is nothing to write home about the so called benefits. He charged that the country has not fully dignified the office of our former Head of State.

“You are the one that is in office. You are the one that has a greater responsibility to be able to use a high standard in your judgement in dealing with the citizens including the former Head of State. To suggest that you can strip off the so-called benefits, first of all, there is nothing to write home about benefits, whether its financially or otherwise,” he said.

“This country has not fully dignified the office of our former Head of State in terms of benefits that you can talk about. So there is nothing really there to take away. The only thing I can advise is, like they say, you can defend a lion that is caged but the moment you open the cage, the lion will defend itself.”

“President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has respected your Presidency from the time he left the inauguration at Heroes Stadium. He has constantly stayed at home. He has even minimized his movements to give you enough space for you to govern this country,” he said.

“You are the one who continues through your surrogates like Haimbe who continue to poke him out of his house. We advise, stop that nonsense.”
he said

Government keen to engage traditional leaders in development – Nkombo

3

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Garry Nkombo says it is the desire of government to work with traditional leaders and communities in conserving natural resources for the benefit of all.

Mr Nkombo said if properly and sustainably harnessed, natural resources can improve people’s livelihoods and create jobs.

“It is the government’s desire to work with their royal highnesses and communities to conserve our natural resources and ensure that local communities benefit from the sustainable utilization of the same,” he said.

Mr Nkombo said this in a speech read for him by North-Western Province Permanent Secretary, Col. Grandson Katambi during the 2022 Lwendela Traditional Ceremony in Kasempa yesterday.

He said Kasempa district is endowed with abundant natural resources like wildlife and forests which can significantly contribute to improving the lives of the local people.

Mr Nkombo said the photographic safari facilities and other tourism related activities in the northern part of the Kafue national park can create jobs for the locals.

“The safari hunting in Kasonso -Busanga Game Management Area is also another opportunity for job creation and revenue generation to the local communities,” he said.

Mr Nkombo said the new dawn government continues to identify the critical role which traditional leaders play in the country’s development agenda hence the call for partnership.

The Minister said it is therefore, important that traditional leaders are involved at every stage of decision making on matters of development.

“Let us join hands with government to build a better Zambia for ourselves and our future generation.

Speaking at the same event, Chief Mumena called on traditional leaders not to sell all the land without regard for their subjects.

Chief Mumena who is also provincial council of chiefs chairperson, said some traditional leaders are selling land to investors, leaving their subjects with nowhere to stay or farm from.

“As we sell the land, let us remember that we have children in our chiefdoms that need to grow food,” he said.

Ministry of Health develops disaster risk recovery guidelines

1

Ministry of Health Knowledge Translation Specialist, Rose Masilani says recovering from the effects of a disaster is one task which requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders.

Ms Masilani said it is for this reason that the Ministry of Health has developed disaster risk recovery guidelines that need to be implemented in a multi-sectoral approach.

She said this when she made a presentation during a health sector emergencies and disaster risk recovery guidelines dissemination meeting with various stakeholders in Solwezi today.

Ms Masilani said the real effects of disasters are felt when the disaster is over.

She however, stated that mitigation of the effects can only be made possible if all key stakeholders play their role and take keen interest in promoting health in the country.

“We need to focus on the recovery process and ensure that we have minimum disruption to the lives of our people and the economy,” Ms Masilani said.

She said though the Ministry of Health is mandated to ensure the nation is healthy, they can only achieve this if every stakeholder plays its role in maintaining good health.

Ms Masilini said an oversight in one area such as child health development can easily trigger an even bigger health problem.

“This document helps us to be more coordinated and to be more effective communicators,” she said.

Ms Masilani has since called on every government ministry and private sector to take keen interest in the document so as to promote good health for a prosperous nation.

In a separate presentation, Environmental Health Officer, Agness Mbewe said for preparedness committees to attain tangible results, all stakeholders both in public and private sectors should be involved.

The Shepolopolo duo of Coach Bruce Mwape and Captain Grace Chanda has made the final shortlist for tomorrow’s 2022 CAF Awards Ceremony.

CAF will hand over the accolades to outstanding players and officials from the 2021/2022 season in national team and inter-club competition.

Mwape is up for the CAF Women’s team coach of the year award where he is up against holder Desiree Ellis of South Africa.
.
Morocco coach Reynald Pedros and South African Jerry Tshabalala who guided Mamelodi Sundown to the triumph in the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League last December, are the others on the shortlist in that category.

In the Women’s category,  Chanda will battle it out with Nigerian striker Asisat Oshoala who withdrew from the Morocco 2022 WAFCON group stage due to injury.

Cameroon captain Ajara Njoya, whose side bowed out of the 2022 WAFCON quarterfinals but clinched a World Cup playoff qualifying spot, completes the women’s awards shortlist.

Should they win their respective awards, Chanda and Mwape will not have to go far to receive them on Wednesday, July 21.

The 2022 CAF Awards Ceremony will be held in Rabat ahead of the 2022 WAFCON final on July 23 and earlier on July 22, the third-and-fourth place match.

Shepolopolo face Nigeria in the third and fourth playoff after losing to South Africa and Morocco in the semifinals respectively.
