Asanovic Itching For Action in Baghdad

0

Zambia coach Aljosa Asanovic is hoping the enthusiasm he has seen from Chipolopolo in training will reflect in Friday friendly against Iraq.

Iraq hosts Zambia in Baghdad in what will be only their second ever meeting since their 2-2 draw at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Friday night’s match will also be Asanovi’c debut international fixture since his appointment in mid-January.

“I am so happy to be here because it is going to be a good test for us,” Asanovic told FAZ Media in Baghdad on Thursday just 24 hours after the team arrived in the Fertile Crescent.

“Iraq is a good team but we have also prepared well for this game.

“From the reaction of my players in the last two training sessions I am really optimistic and we are ready for the game.”

Asanovic has taken a 20-member home-based team for the match with emphasis on the 2022 COSAFA CUP and the Algeria 2023 CHAN qualifiers.

However, only a handful of domestic call-ups will travel to Europe after the friendly to join their foreign-based counterparts summoned for two friendlies there.

Zambia will start their European tour on March 25 against Angola in Portugal and have a March 29 meeting against Guinea in Paris.

Meanwhile, one of the major highlights on the Baghdad leg will see Nkana striker Alex Ngonga return to the fold for the first time in over four years due to injury and form.

Ngonga is a shock call-up by Asanovic despite the eccentric strikers’ erratic form recently for Nkana where he remains the clubs top scorer this season on 9 goals.

COMESA concerned with marginalisation of the fish industry

0

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has expressed concern with the continued marginalisation of the fisheries industry in the Eastern, Southern and Indian Ocean regions.

COMESA Assistant Secretary-General–Programmes Kipyego Cheluget says the fisheries sector is one of the fastest-growing industries as fish and fish products are one of the most widely traded food commodities due to their nutritional and economic wellbeing of people.

Dr. Cheluget however, noted that despite the significant role that the sector plays especially to small-scale fisheries and contribution to the global poverty reduction the sector has not attracted much attention from national and global policies.

“Despite the significant importance of fisheries as a sector, especially the small scale and potential to contribute to; poverty alleviation, a large number of small scale fisheries in the EA,SA and IO region are not in a good state, “he said.

ZANIS reports that, Dr. Cheluget was speaking in Lusaka today during the opening of the steering committee meeting of the ECOFISH programme on sustainable development of fisheries in Eastern, Southern and Indian Ocean regions.

The ECOFISH programme is a 28 million Euros European Union sponsored programme aimed at promoting equitable economic growth of sustainable fisheries in EA, SA and IO regions.

He said this is why COMESA will support its member states to implement their blue economy strategy in attaining sustainable development of the fisheries industry through programmes like the ECOFISH which is designed to create awareness and address challenges in the sector.

He added that proper implementation of sustainable development of fisheries through the ECOFISH programme will also help to take stock of the fisheries resources and protect them from overfishing and illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing among others.

“There is need to strengthen our capacities in the sustainable development of our fisheries resources, including harmonisation of monitoring controls and surveillance to protect our resources, “he added.

EU Head of Cooperation, Milco Van Gool observed that there has been an increase in illegal fishing activities in most of the fish resources in the EA, SA and IO regions.

Mr. Gool said this is why there is need for concerted efforts from all member states to curtail the scourge by coming up with better fisheries management and supporting small scale fishing in the region.

He cited coming up with a single global framework and aligning a common set of values and objectives for a sustainable fisheries industry.

“It is essential that our actions to operate in synergy and deliver outputs and carryout joint surveillance patrols will enhance the fisheries sector in our regions, “said Mr. Gool.

Indian Ocean Commission Secretary General, Velayodoum Marimoutou has praised member states in the EA, SA and IO for the continued commitment to protect the fisheries resources and urged the countries to further devise innovative ways of achieving sustainable management of fisheries resources.

Prof Marimoutou, who spoke through Dev Phooker cited lack of expertise in decision making regarding the development of the fishing sector is one area that needs to be addressed through improving data and scientific information on World’s fishing catches.

Embrace values of RB, President Hichilema tells leaders

18

President Hakainde Hichilema has called on leaders in the country as well as the youth to embrace and emulate the legacy of peace, love, reconciliation, and patriotism which was exhibited by the late former president Rupiah Banda.

President Hichilema said leaders should adopt the values of the late Mr. Banda as their own because they aimed at uniting and serving the people of Zambia.

The Head of State said this during the state funeral of the late Mr. Banda at the Show Grounds in Lusaka today.

President Hichilema said the late president Banda will be remembered for his numerous contributions to the nation.

“In remembering our former president, we do so with a deep gratitude to our creator for having given us RB for a long time,” he said.

And Mr. Hichilema has expressed gratitude to the foreign heads of state who rendered support to the government.

He said the decision by heads of state to come in person or send their representatives was a sign of showing true unity and neighborliness on the death of Mr. Banda.

“Your presence here is the testimony of the role that president Banda played in promoting peace not only in our country but the entire region,” he added.

He explained that it is rare to see an individual thrive in public service for over sixty years, which the late president Banda did because he had a lot to offer to the people.

Mr. Hakainde said the late Mr. Banda served the country and the entire region in various capacities with excellence.

The President noted that the late Mr. Banda was loved by many Zambians for the role he played in uniting the country before and after the general elections in 2021.

He said the late Mr. Banda will be remembered as a gallant leader who fought for the country’s democracy.

He noted that the country is heartbroken by his death.

And in a vote of thanks, Henry Banda, the son of the late fourth president Banda, expressed gratitude to President Hichilema for the support rendered to the family during the mourning period.

Mr. Banda also extended his gratitude to foreign heads of state and government who showed support and solidarity to the family during the funeral.

Among the foreign delegates that attended the state funeral were former president of Zambia Edgar Lungu, President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa, President of Namibia Hage Geingob, former president of Botswana Ian Khama, former president of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete, former president of Mozambique, Joackim Chissano and former president of Malawi, Bakili Muluzu.

The Mansa Magistrate Court has adjourned to March 18, 2022 for possible plea, the matter in which United Party for National Development (UPND) National Deputy Chairperson Stephen Chikota and 10 others are facing five counts among them riotous conduct.

Eight of the 11 accused persons appeared before Magistrate Moses Mulenga on Wednesday for plea but could not take off as Senior Public Prosecutor Wilson Mwale told the court that the trial magistrate was not present and that three other accused persons namely, Davies Mulenga, Shadrick Banda and Jones Kabwe where absent from the court.

Mr. Mwale said there has been no reason advanced for the absence of the three accused persons adding that their sureties were aware that they were supposed to appear before the court on the same day with the eight others.

He further informed the court that the State will make the necessary application with regard to the three accused who were absent when the trial court sits further stating that 10 of the 11 accused persons are on bail.

Confusion at the Black Mountain in Kitwe appears far from ending

10

Confusion at the Black Mountain in Kitwe appears far from ending as scavengers continue fighting for their share at the mineral dump site.

Police on Thursday morning fought running battles with scavengers after they were denied entry into the Black Mountain area.

The scavengers blocked the Kitwe-Ndola Road with tires, logs and stones in protest.

The scavengers mostly youths want access to the Black Mountain as well despite not being in cooperatives.

The protest on Thursday morning which happened between 06:00 and 08:00 hours disturbed the movement of people and motor traffic on the Kitwe/Ndola Road.

Police needed to use tear gas canisters to contain the situation as protesters were forced to flee into Wusakile and Misheshi Townships

Police are still keeping vigil around the Black Mountain.

Some people picking chrome, the mineral found at the dump site, on Tuesday morning ran amok disrupting operations at the Black Mountain in Kitwe.

Meanwhile, Copperbelt acting Police Commissioner Tresford Kasale has warned people causing confusion at the Black Mountain.

Mr. Kasale said that enough manpower has been deployed to ensure that law and order prevails at the Black Mountain.

Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary Augustine Kasongo has noted that failure to harmonise operations between scavengers and cooperatives has caused confusion at the Black Mountain.

Mr. Kasongo said there is need for scavengers and cooperatives to give each other chances to operate at the Black Mountain.

“I was saying your (cooperatives) business is based on turn over. The more trucks your load the more money you make so beginning work in the afternoon is working against you in terms of turnover. We have resolved with your colleagues (scavengers) that they will have a portion where to operate from. You will equally have where to operate from. So stick to your area of operation,” Mr. Kasongo said.

Kitwe District Commissioner Lawrence Mwanza hours earlier had told ZNBC News that chrome hand-pickers or scavengers will no longer access the Black Mountain until further notice.

Mr. Mwanza, who was visibly annoyed, said that it was a serious error and breach of the Mines and Minerals Act for operators at the Black Mountain to allow chrome hand pickers at the site.

He repeated his accusations against small scale miners popularly known as Jerabos and some foreign investors operating in Kitwe that they were sponsoring the chrome hand pickers who are causing confusion at the Black Mountain.

Confusion has characterised operations at the Black Mountain since Monday when business resumed as scavengers forced their way to pick the lucrative materials at the site.

Meanwhile, Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe has warned that the government will not take kindly to people trying to cause confusion over the operations at the Black Mountain.

Mr. Kabuswe has charged that there is a clique that wants to exclusively benefit from the Black Mountain at the expense of cooperatives that have embraced many stakeholders including women.

Speaking in an interview with ZNBC News, the Mines Minister also revealed that the Government is committed to improving safety at the site to prevent accidents.

He said the operator who is excavating the slag from Black Mountain on behalf of the cooperatives has expertise in mining.

Mr. Kabuswe said the operator was thoroughly interviewed and scrutinized before being employed to work with cooperatives.

The Government last month officially handed over 30 % of the Kitwe Mineral Slag Dump commonly known as Black Mountain to cooperatives owned by the local youth and women.

The Black Mountain located between Wusakile and Nkana West is owned by Nkana Alloy, who are the major shareholders with the Government having a minor stake.

When handing over the 30% portion of the Black Mountain in February, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe told the cooperatives to begin operations with immediate effect.

Staff-level agreement signed with IMF to contract US$1.4 billion will boost the economy

18

The Zambia Tax Platform, an alliance of different civil society organisations, is optimistic that the staff-level agreement which the government signed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to contract US$1.4 billion will boost the economy.

Zambia Tax Platform Alliance Coordinator, Ibrahim Kamara, said the staff-level agreement is important for the country as it will help in restructuring or refinancing Zambia’s debt.

Mr. Kamara said the staff-level agreement will boost investor confidence and lenders will also be in a position to lend because the government will win IMF’s confidence.

Speaking during an orientation training on the national debt justice campaign movement in Lusaka, Mr. Kamara noted that, going forward, it will be easier for government to engage other lenders because of IMF’s endorsement.

“A staff-level agreement will go a long way to renew the confidence of lenders and even commercial banks will be able to start lending to borrowers, hence growing the economy,” he explained.

He said the government must restructure the debts, especially those which are commercial as they have impacted negatively on foreign reserves and contributed to currency depreciation.

And a representative of Debt Justice Campaign, Charles Mulila, said the government must devise ways to grow the economy instead of contracting more debts.

Debt Justice Campaign is an organization that offers alternative poverty reduction strategies as a means to avert debt contraction.

Mr. Mulila stated that debt contraction in the previous government has affected women more as they have no means to fend for themselves.

He added that for government to avoid debt contraction, it must harmonise and regularise new opened up gold mines through awarding of contracts and licenses to credible local and foreign investors.

He also urged government to broaden the tax base to the would-be empowered small and medium scale miners whom he said have been neglected for a long time.

Mr. Mulila said this is in order for government to generate revenue to avoid debt contraction.

“Averting debt contraction by government can be achieved by empowering women and youths to realise their potential opportunities as a way of sustaining their livelihoods,” he said.

In December last year, the government signed a staff-level agreement with the IMF to restructure credit extended facilities for 2022 to 2025.

This is aimed at restoring economic stability and providing the foundation for all-inclusive economic recovery which will see many players getting involved to borrow money from banks at affordable rates.

UPND accuses KCM of victimising union officials

4

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has allegedly fired nine mineworkers union leaders from Chililabombwe, Chingola and Kitwe branches citing unprofessional conduct.

And Chililabombwe United Party for National Development (UPND) District Chairperson Timothy Musonda says the decision to terminate the jobs for the union leaders is an act of victimization as they supported the ruling party during the August 12 general elections.

The alleged affected union leaders include branch chairpersons for the three mine workers unions namely Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ), National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) and United Mine Workers Union of Zambia (UMUZ) in the three districts.

Mr Musonda expressed displeasure about the firing of the union leaders as it has potential to result in mass strike action among the mine workers which would negatively affect production in the mining sector.

He said the affected unionists have not been served with work termination letters yet which were red to them hence appealing for the intervention from the government to ensure harmony prevails at KCM.

When contacted KCM Corporate Affairs Manager Shapi Shachinda referred the matter to the national union leaders whom he said had already issued a statement regarding the incident.

When contacted, MUZ National Chairperson Joseph Chewe expressed ignorance on the matter.

Magistrate recuses herself in Chitotela and Chilangwa arson case

3

Mansa based Principal Resident Magistrate, Silvia Munyinya has recused herself in handling the case involving Ronald Chitotela and Nickson Chilangwa with five others.

This follows an application by Defense Lawyers to have the Presiding Magistrate recuse herself from the case in the interest of fair justice because she handled the similar case when she chaired the tribunal in the same court.

And the State had no objection to the application for the rescue herself or refer the matter to the High Court for determination of preliminary issues raised by the defence counsels.

When the matter came up this morning for continued hearing of the application from last night, Magistrate Munyinya ruled that she was recusing from handling the case.

She said it was not disputable that she chaired the tribunal in which the three accused persons in the case at hand were mentioned.

Magistrate Munyinya said going ahead in adjudicating the matter may be perceived by right thinking people that she was not impartial in her decisions since the defence counsels have expressed discomfort about her handling the case.

” It has come apparent clear that the three accused persons, Ronald Chitotela, Nickson Chilangwa and Kalumba Chifumbe were mentioned in the tribunal I chaired in September last year over the same arson case,” she stated.

The Principal Resident Magistrate has since allocated the case to another Resident Magistrate and adjourned the matter to April 08, 2022 for mention.

In this matter, Mr. Chitotela and Mr. Chilangwa with five others have been charged with arson, threatening violence, assault and malicious damage to property.

It is alleged that the two Law-makers while acting together with five other accused persons assaulted four UPND members, threatened violence and damaged the windscreen of the Mahindra motor vehicle before setting it ablaze on August 12, 2021 in Pambashe Constituency.

Mr. Chitotela and Mr. Chilangwa and five others are being represented by Jonas Zimba of Makebi Zulu Advocates, Andrew Kombe of Andrew and Partners and Benjamine Mwelwa of L.E. EYAA and Partners.

Principal Resident Magistrate Munyinya has extended police bond for all the seven accused persons.

President Hichilema said the rule of law will be applied in all areas of his administration.

The Head of State said this when a team from Amnesty International paid a courtesy call on him at State House in Lusaka today.

President Hichilema said his administration is putting in place measures to restore the rule of law and reunite the country and improve the economy.

He said this is a deliberate step to restore rule of law as it is government’s agenda to reunite the country.

The President explained that government is committed to upholding human rights, liberties, freedoms and ensuring there is equity, fairness to opportunities, and fairness to employment among others.

“We are clear on the fight on corruption that there is no sacred cow but will do it within the confines of the law”, he said.

NATO provoked the war between Russia and Ukraine

34

By Fred M’membe

The war in Ukraine is ushering in a new period of heightened danger in world politics and the threat of a global conflict that would devastate humanity. Socialists and people who want peace need to recognise that the entire United States foreign policy and military establishment is now organised around great power conflict against Russia and China as the defining strategy for decades to come. It is essential to recognise that Russia, China and other countries are not being targeted fundamentally because of human rights, or this or that military action, but because they no longer accept the United States-dominated world order.

In the run-up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and ever since, the corporate media in the United States and its allies has been working overtime to spread misinformation and confusion.

We must stand in opposition to this new Cold War-style period of confrontation. This major power conflict is not in the interests of the great mass of people, in the United States or worldwide. The logic of it will only produce severe economic pain, climate disaster, and ultimately catastrophic war. The working class, the poor have no interest in being dragged into such a conflict in the name of preserving the dominance of Wall Street and the Pentagon.

In the run-up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and ever since, the corporate media in the United States and its allies has been working overtime to spread misinformation and confusion. They hope that inundating people with non-stop anti-Russian content will manufacture the consent necessary not just for a short-term military escalation in Eastern Europe, but so as to sign people up for a whole new Cold War.

Clearly, there’s need for increased unity for those who oppose United States imperialism and support peace. NATO provoked the war between Russia and Ukraine. The United States government has been intentionally escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine for years. From continuing NATO’s eastward expansion, despite promises not to, to supporting the pro-Western coup in Ukraine in 2014, to heavily arming the Ukrainian government, NATO’s aggressive actions set the stage for the war. The United States was determined to bring Ukraine into a Western sphere of influence, and so refused to acknowledge Russia’s legitimate security concerns about NATO expansion and advanced missiles being placed on its borders. Russia’s “red lines” were well known for decades and NATO did all of this knowing it could potentially lead to intervention. In some respects, it appears NATO set a deliberate trap that Russia fell into.

NATO is a relic of the Cold War, and needs to be dissolved; its only purpose is to maintain United States military hegemony.

NATO’s drive to turn Europe into a staging ground for its military threats against Russia means that not only is Ukraine militarised, but that all of Europe is. Currently, the principal obstacle to establishing a peaceful Europe is the polarisation of the continent around NATO as a de facto anti-Russian alliance. NATO is a relic of the Cold War, and needs to be dissolved; its only purpose is to maintain United States military hegemony. The only way to have discussions about the many issues causing conflict between European nations – borders, languages, economic relations, etc. – without raising the possibility of war is through the dissolution of NATO, the demilitarisation of Europe, and the removal of United States troops, missiles, and nuclear weapons. Russia should follow suit with their own demilitarisation, step by step.

The UN Charter of 1945 was written, and agreed to, to protect against a “might makes right” world order where stronger, more powerful countries can do whatever they want while smaller, less powerful nations have no guaranteed rights. This sovereignty-based international system has never been fully realised, and in many ways has masked the imperialist reality and deep power imbalances of the global order. The UN Security Council, the only body empowered to authorise sanctions and military action against another country, functions in a completely undemocratic way by concentrating power into the hands of just five permanent members that can veto any resolutions. The Security Council should be abolished. What should be defended, however, is that the UN Charter creates a legal and political baseline to counteract abuses of power perpetrated by more powerful nations against lesser powers — and insists on the sovereignty and independence of formerly colonised nations in particular.

While the whole world is crying out for an end to the United States-dominated unipolar world order, “multipolarity” would not be progressive if it means becoming simply a competition of “unilateral” initiatives. Many left-wing and anti-imperialist governments believe that adherence to the UN Charter is an instrument to defend what is positive about “multi-polarity” – the space for counter-hegemonic projects to grow.

For decades politicians and the corporate media, liberal and conservative alike, have pushed a false equivalency between fascists and communists. At the end of the day, this anti-communist slander is also a sleight of hand that lets fascists in through the back door. In Ukraine, where the Communist Party is banned, the rapid and dangerous normalisation of Nazi Germany and its collaborators has taken place. Ukraine has integrated outright Nazis and Nazi-adjacent forces into the armed services and police. Now the United States media, which just a few years ago noted the neo-Nazi presence in Ukraine, assists in their rebranding as “patriots.”

Humanity is calling out for an alternative to capitalism, and we cannot allow the idea of socialism — of working-class power and international unity — to be taken off the table.

The underlying cause of this conflict, beyond NATO, is that we still live in a world that is divided into states run by capitalist elites who prioritise their own wealth and power above all else. The only way to build a world that allows for global cooperation and peace between all peoples, the elimination of poverty, the abolition of nuclear weapons, and the implementation of real democracy that puts the power in the hands of the people, is through socialism.
