HH announces the hand over of Black Mountain on Facebook

6

President Hakainde Hichilema has announced on Facebook the hand over of the Kitwe Black Mountain, known as the Nkana Slag Dump to a Consortium of cooperatives representing all the 10 districts of the Copperbelt province, the Women in mining group, and the Community hosting the black mountain.

Mr. Hichilema said that his government appreciates the enormous value and great potential of the mining sector, and its ability to be a major factor in our country’s economic transformation and that now is the time to bring about sanity in the mining sector, which has been ravaged by greed, corruption and unscrupulous practices by certain investors and those charged with governance.

The President also announced that ten different companies have been identified as off-takers of the material from the black mountain and that youth and women cooperatives will soon realise monetary benefits from the mineral sales that they will have complete control over.

The President further announced that, in order to support specific youth groups, a revolving fund has been created under the district commissioner’s office and a committee has since been formed to manage the fund with strict fund management and accountability guidelines.

The President said that by-products from the production process will be used for the production of concrete and pavers for townships roads.

Over the weekend, National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) has warned that illegal mining activities at the dumpsites would soon resurface if the government delays lifting the ban that was effected last September.

In September last year, Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe suspended mining activities at all dumpsites until there was sanity in the operations.

NUMAW national treasurer Saul Simunjika said the government should consider lifting the ban and quickly give a clear roadmap on how activities would be conducted once works at the dumpsites resume.

Mr. Simunjila said in an interview that any more delay would force youths, including those who were legally operating there before the ban to engage in the illegal mining activities.

“The direction from Government is needed because in its absence you will see illegal activates resuming even by the same youth companies that were allowed to work there before the ban, they will start sending street boys to conduct mining activities illegally,” Mr. Simunjila said.

Youths on the Copperbelt recently demanded for a clear roadmap on how activities will be conducted at the dump site once operations resume.

Government in September last year suspended mining activities at all dumpsites until there was sanity in the operations.

Mr Kabuswe said the government wanted sanity and order to be restored in the operations while it promotes small-scale mining in the dumpsites.

He also said that there was need to create a legal framework for youths to fairly participate in small-scale mining.

Government should engage the Church and NGOs to facilitate the awarding of bursaries

4

National Democratic Congress secretary-general Charles Kabwita has said that the government should engage the Church and non-governmental organisations to facilitate the awarding of secondary school bursaries under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) for transparence’s sake to prevent the process from being politicised.

Mr Kabwita said that in as much as the process for applying for the bursaries would be starting from the ward level at the constituency if it was left to be run by politicians it was likely to be politicised.

He said it was important that Government take strict measures so that members of the ruling party do not take advantage of the process and disadvantage the vulnerable people.

Mr Kabwita said that the measures should be put up as quickly as possible so that there was no repeat of what was happening to the CDF in the previous regime where only members of the ruling party could access it.

He said that as the guidelines on the utilisation of the CDF were out it was important that the government trains stakeholders in various constituencies on how to tender and subsequently award contracts.

Mr Kabwita said it was a very sensitive matter which needed serious monitoring, education and sensitisation.

He said that if this undertaking was left to members of parliament only whole process would be marred with serious corruption because those are politicians and they owe favours to their supporters.

Mr Kabwita said the government should make sure that all loopholes were sealed so that the CDF money serves its intended purpose.

PF will bounce back into power in 2026-Nickson Chilangwa

30

Patriotic Front party acting Secretary General Hon. Nickson Chilangwa says there is no doubt that PF will bounce back into power in 2026.

Speaking when he featured on Diamond TV ‘Costa programme,’ Hon. Chilangwa said the PF confidence of winning the 2026 General elections is coming from President Hakainde Hichilema who has publicly admitted that he has failed to perform.
Hon. Chilangwa said President Hichilema has given up because he is failing to give his ministers and permanent secretaries right instruction for them to perform very well.

The Kawambwa central lawmaker said it is unfortunate that the New Dawn Government has continued to blame the PF for their failures even when they were given the mandate to rule by the Zambian people.

“PF will win the the 2026 elections and there is no doubt about it. President Hichilema lamented that his ministers are failing perform and are getting instructions from the PF. This shows that he himself has failed to perform because he is failing to give his ministers and Permanent secretaries right instruction for them to work efficiently,” Hon. Chilangwa said.

” Our confidence of winning the 2026 elections is coming from President Hakainde Hichilema himself because of his failed promises and he is now blaming his ministers for his failures. UPND duped Zambians and things are not okay but all UPND praise singers know is to insult people opposed to them,” He said.

“PF might have done something wrong during our tenure in office but we performed. It’s not right for President Hichilema and UPND to continue blaming PF for their failures when it’s the Zambian people that gave them the mandate to rule,” Hon. Chilangwa said.

“HH Feels Let Down”: A Confession of Baal Amidst Worshipers’ Sacred Denial

21

By Kapya Kaoma

When I saw the Times of Zambia front page story that “HH Feels Let Down; Says Appointment of Ministers and Permanent Secretaries in his “New Dawn” Government has so far not helped matters,” on February 10, 2022, I made sense of his February 8, 2022 tweet, “25.7 million is coming to your constituency. What will you do with that money? Please tell us.” If one didn’t know the sources of these statements, they could be misconstrued as misrepresentations of the President. Yet they came from HH.

I am not surprised HH publicly stripped naked his own administration. His Cabinet and Permanent Secretaries his worshipers praised as the most competent, but I termed Salaula. It is the worst team one can pick aside from the fact that they shouted, “Bally will fix it,” the loudest! If HH couldn’t come up with the right team to help him govern, why should Zambians trust his judgment on policy issues?

There’s only one way to explain his disappointment; a disheveled President fleeing from his own ugly shadow. That tweet said it all. He doesn’t have a comprehensive vision for the nation–every Zambian must come up with his or her plan; and “as the youth of Zambia say, Bally will pay.” The same with his administration; it is all about his lugubrious egoism; so he must find someone to blame for his failing ideological programs.

Bally worshipers are in sacred denial. Sympathy for their god, these strange beings lack as his Presidency hangs on the cliff. How would he dance forward without disappearing into the apocalyptic abyss from which no idol can escape? Is dancing the cursed dununa reverse his only way to save face from those of us who saw it coming as if diviners yet mortals? Alas. A solemn indictment of all merciless Bally worshipers with us–their disappointed god has gotten it; the New Dark Regime’s incompetence on PF blame not. Yet in the Baal Universe, Lungu to blame save that a self exculpatory confession a god finally made; “I am not fixing it.” But faithful worshipers proudly respond, “Baal you are fixing it!”

It is important to note that the issue of this Dark Regime is bigger than the Cabinet and Permanent Secretaries; the President himself is the problem. Upon taking office, HH declared bogus ideological programs such as CDF, free education, boarding bursaries, and employment creation for teachers, nurses, doctors, and unemployed youths among many others, when he had zero knowledge about the logistics of government under workings. As President, he has limitless funds for these programs, but not a single experienced personnel to implement them. This is because these programs affect various Government Ministries–that is they don’t necessarily fall under one department of government. The President’s pride and lack of consultations have created unnecessary bottlenecks and subjected these programs to delays, confusion, misuse and corruption. In the real world, for example, the Ministry of Education should have handled Secondary boarding Bursaries. Funds would have moved from the Treasury to the established and experienced education system. As arranged, however, the bursaries have to go from the Treasury to MPs, then to local authorities. People would then apply to local authorities, and once processed, the money will be sent to schools. Among local authorities, nobody is trained to process these transactions. In the end, HH created his own problem. A transaction that would have involved two Ministries ends up going through many different Ministries; duplicating the process unnecessarily. Nobody understands the system but HH’s complex brain.

The same with CDF. In his complex mind, Zambia’s underdevelopment is due to lack of money–the opposite is true. As Dambisa Moyo has shown, money alone does not grant development; strategic planning, project and market analysis, outcomes, and systems of project viability evaluation are engines of development. HH assumes that all Constituencies possess such skills, and that they have management experience and personnel to implement such projects. Moreover, needs differ from one community to the other; here the administration’s guidance on how all Constituencies projects will add to the National Development PLAN should have come first. Sadly, the President expects Zambians to tell him what they need–forgetting that in democratic nations, we speak through our MPs and Councilors. Parliament should have come up with exact guidelines on which activities and programs would be funded through CDF. Without guidelines, what would happen when people and elected officials disagree as to how this money should be used? And as with bursaries, which Ministry will have complete oversight of these Funds? The MPs would want to control the fund, but what is the role of local authorities? Will the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, and the Ministry of Education have roles too? And what process would be used to ascertain which projects to fund? Nobody knows.

Moreover, how would this money be divorced from political corruption–that is MPs using these funds to ensure their own re-elections as opposed to serving all citizens. For instance, highly populated areas in one Constituency are likely to be developed over less populated ones for electoral reasons.

But the cost may prove deadly to all those involved. Whereas UPND MPs will be shielded from accusations of misuse of public funds, Opposition MPs are likely to be arrested one after another. If I were an Opposition MP, I wouldn’t be too excited. This is one route to Prison. But UPND MPs are only safe as long as HH is President. Thereafter, they will become devils of HH’s making–they will be arrested for misuse of Funds because Chimbwi had no plan. This is because most projects would fail due to lack of expertise and clear evaluation guidelines. More importantly, the money would pass through many hands before reaching intended audiences–making it easy to steal!

In short, the President own policies are buried in prideful ignorance engraved in his egoistic “one man kantemba syndrome.” The efficiency of every administration begins with the President’s vision planted in truth and reality. Unfortunately, HH does not understand that leadership means carrying others with you. Had he spent time thinking through his programs, consulting with community leaders, Civil Society leaders, Opposition leaders, community development experts and of course, political historians, he would have realized that Presidential ideological programs are always wasteful. They are also gold mines for corruption.

National values wearing down in Zambia, laments President HH

24

President Hakainde Hichilema is concerned with the wearing down of the national values such as hard work in the country.

Speaking when he joined congregants at Salvation Army Libala Temple in Worship today, President Hichilema said he wants Christian values to be deepened and protected among Zambians.

He, however, expressed happiness that the concept of hardworking in the Salvation Army is still alive and appealed to them to continue imparting the values in citizens.

President Hichilema said his administration wants to unite Zambians because it makes improving their living conditions becomes easy.

He pledged his administration’s commitment to Emulating the life of Enoch in the Bible as preached earlier.

President Hichilema said the message was loud and clear through preaching and music and will be constantly attending Salvation Army Church services.

He also accepted the invitation to be part of the Church’s 100 years Anniversary celebrations administration.

And Salvation Army Zambia Secretary of Programmes Kennedy Mizinga pledged the Church’s support of President Hichilema’s administration.

Major Mizinga said the Salvation Army will pray for the President and pledged continued partnership with government in areas of Health and Education as part of helping alleviate the suffering of citizens.

He said President Hichilema’s worship with the Salvation Army is historical becoming the second republican President to worship with them in the Church’s 100 years existence in Zambia.

Major Mizinga extended an invite to President Hichilema to be part of the Centenary celebrations to be graced by the Church’s General who oversees 100 countries.

President HICHILEMA’s entourage included UPND National Chairman Steven Katuka, Ministers of Tourism Rodney Sikumba, Agriculture Mutolo Phiri, Transport and Logistics Frank Tayali and newly elected Kabwata MP Andrew Tayengwa among others.

Green Eagles End Leaders Red Arrows’ 17-match Unbeaten Run

2

Red Arrows’ 17-game unbeaten run came to an end on Sunday when they lost 2-0 away to Green Eagles in a top three clash at Independence Stadium in Choma.

The result saw Arrows’ impressive run dating back to October 28 come to an end that began when they beat Prison Leopards 1-0 away in Kabwe.

Arrows in the first leg beat Eagles 1-0 but their hosts this weekend were ready for the league leaders and took the game to them.

Eagles broke the deadlock in the 28th minute through a fine volley by Hosea Silwamba he let losse from the edge of the area to see them take a 1-0 halftime lead.

But Arrows striker Allasane Diarra could have equalized in the 40th minute but elected to go for power rather than a soft tap-in in front of an inviting goal.

Eagles also didn’t relent even after Arrows introduced their influential veteran James Chamanga after the hour mark.

Furthermore, Arrows goalkeeper Charles Kalumba had to be at his best in the 64th minute to deny Emmanuel Mwanba and Simon Mulenga.

But Kalumba could not replicate his earlier exploits in stoppage time when Derrick Bulaya finished off in the rebound after the Arrows goalkeeper parried Jimmy Nakena’s shot into his path.

Arrows lead on 43 points has now been cut from five to four points after Eagles moved from third to second place.

Eagles rise relegates defending champions Zesco United to third on 38 points after losing 2-0 away to Kansanshi on Saturday.

Chambeshi Delighted With Nkana Victory

0

Coach Beston Chambeshi is relieved to see Nkana return to winning ways after last weekends shocking 1-0 loss away at Chambishi in Kalulushi.

Nkana on Saturday edged Indeni 1-0 at home in Wusakile, Kitwe to move to 36 points, seven behind Super Division leaders Red Arrows as at Week 23.

Skipper Diamond Chikwekwe scored the goal in the first half at Nkana Stadium.

“Yeah it is a relief for us and you know games are going. And when you are playing teams that are below the log it is always difficulty and I am happy we have collected Maxim points at home,” Chambeshi told reporters in a post-match interview.

He acknowledged that Indeni were tough.

“It wasn’t an easy game, Indeni came for a kill, they have also passed through a bad patch so I am happy with the result,” Chambeshi said.

The coach saluted his players for not conceding a goal against Indeni.

“All we want is to maintain the same discipline in defence and I am happy today at least we have managed to get a clean sheet which is good for the defenders and even the goalkeeper. Overall it was a good performance we were playing against a team which is fighting for survival,” Chambeshi said.

Indeni coach Dabid Chilufya was gutted by the defeat at his old club.

‘I saw the lapse from the defenders, you know we had the game from the beginning to the end but there was a lapse from the defenders, they allowed that goal and that is how it is,” ex-Nkana defender Chilufya said.

“At the end of the day I am very disappointed with our striking force. We had almost fifteen chance that we failed to utilize to get even a single goal. So it is not a good loss,” he lamented.

Indeni are just one place above relegation with 26 points in 23 matches played.

Sakuwaha: Asanovic Must Qualify Chipolopolo to AFCON 2023

3

Ex-Chipolopolo striker Jonas Sakuwaha says he is expecting new National Team coach Aljosa Asanovic to qualify Zambia for the 2023 Africa Cup in Ivory Coast.

Croatian born trainer Asanovic was unveiled as Chipolopolo coach last month after signing a four- year contract.

Sakuwaha, the 2012 Africa Cup winner, said Asanovic should know that Africa Cup qualification is not negotiable among Zambian fans.

“Appointing a new coach and seeing that we have not qualified for the Africa Cup in a row, automatically everyone’s expectation is that we need to qualify to the Africa Cup,” he said.

“We have been 2012 Africa Cup winners, even 2013 we were there but since then we have just been playing qualifiers without qualifying so the expectations are high for him,” Sakuwaha said.

The former Zesco United and TP Mazembe striker said the new coach must push players to work hard and deliver positive results.

“He need to be hard working with these Zambian players. As Zambians we are players who need to be pushed. If you remember during coach Herve Renard’s time, he pushed us a lot. He encouraged us a lot he gave us that freedom to do whatever we wanted to do on the pitch,” Sakuwaha said.

Zambia last featured at the Africa Cup in 2015 under coach Honour Janza.

“He (Renard) was pushing us to be who we are. So even the new coach should do the same. We need to qualify for the Africa Cup because there is nothing like making a team.No one is going to listen to excuses that the coach is building a team. We need to qualify to the Africa Cup,” Sakuwaha said.

Workers at Nortec bemoan government’s delays to clear arrears

4

Workers at the Northern Technical College in Ndola have bemoaned Government’s reluctance in addressing issues affecting the institution.

The workers who staged a sit-in protest in November raising various issues through a petition prompting Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati to visit the institution and assuring the workers of Government’s intervention.

Among the issues raised was none payment of gratuities which have accumulated to over K25 million from 2019, NAPSA debt dating as far back as 2019 which has accumulated to K2o million, removing of employees from the payroll without paying their gratuities and leadership crisis at the directorate level.

However, the workers who spoke on condition of anonymity said despite assurances of the Government’s quick intervention nothing has been done and only a paltry amount of K1.9 million had been released to cushion the over K45 m owed to the employees in form of gratuity and NAPSA.

The workers said the amount was only enough to pay a handful of employees with more being owed from as far back as 2019.

The workers further complained that despite the government owing to the institution for the more than 1,300 students currently on a bursary. more than 480 students have been offered 100 percent bursaries this year a situation they complained would further cripple the institution’s financial standing.

The workers who spoke on condition of anonymity stated that despite engagement with the Minister of Technology and Science directors and subsequently Mr Mutati their cries seem to have fallen on deaf ears as the promises made by the minister have not been fulfilled.

They said despite management assuring them of putting in place modalities to start dismantling the more than K20 million debt owed to NAPSA, some of their colleagues that have retired have continued to languish in poverty as they have not been paid their gratuities despite being removed from the payroll.

They said this has left them with no source of income as they cannot access their money from NAPSA due to none remittance by management.

They have called on government to quickly come to their aid by paying off gratuities and money owed to NAPSA as if left unsolved the situation may escalate further.

Among the other issues raised was directorate’s refusal to increase education allowance for middle management, which has for the past 6 years remained at K1,500.

They added that K1,500 education allowance was not adequate to cater for their childrens school needs.

They have further asked government to quickly intervene in the leadership crisis at directorate level.

The workers called for the Ministry to advertise the position of Principal as soon as possible as the contract for the current Principle Martin Kasonso expired on January 31st 2022.

They believe this has caused a leadership void at the institution.

UPND Concerned about the distribution of Honeybee procured drugs to Health facilities

19

The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) leadership has said that it is disturbed with media reports suggesting that the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies (ZAMMSA) allegedly distributed some of the drugs from the infamous Honeybee scandal to some medical facilities in the country.

UPND National Chairman Stephen Katuka said that the development makes sad reading and will not be condoned by the New Dawn administration.

Mr. Katuka said that the party leadership will not forget the atrocities committed by the previous administration when it comes to quality of healthcare.

Mr. Katuka said that the matter is at the heart of the President and his Vice President and will ensure that those involved face the law, because the Government’s commitment to the provision of quality and affordable healthcare has not changed.

Mr. Katuka also added that the UPND’s resolve to fight corruption in drug procurement has only grown stronger as seen by the decision to allow investigative wings to operate freely and have those connected to such issues given chance to account for themselves.

Reports had emerged that the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency has released a consignment of Honeybee drugs that had been quarantined for failing quality assurance test

According to whistleblowers, some Paracetamol drugs which were supposed to be part of the Health Centre kits were delivered as a single commodity in Kabwe and it was not clear how many other Hospitals received the Honeybee drugs.

When contacted to explain the development, ZAMMSA said the Agency needed more time to prepare a response to the Press Query.

UPND Chair for Special Duties William Banda says Government will Serve Everyone

15

The United Party for National Development (UPND) National Chairman General for Special Duties William Banda has assured the country that the New Dawn administration will serve everyone regardless of their political affiliation.

Mr. Banda said that the UPND has been entrusted by Zambians to deliver development.

Mr banda said that it is for this reason that party members must align themselves with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision of prioritizing service to the country.

Mr. Banda has since urged party officials to interact with their various communities in order to effectively respond to the various challenges.

Speaking during a donation made to some residents in Bauleni compound, whose houses were flooded during the rainy season, Mr. Banda called on the Lusaka City Council to introduce solutions that will correct the problem of floods.

And Kabulonga Ward 19 Chairman Nelson Nkole said the UPND is no longer campaigning but now on the ground working to deliver tangible development the people want.

State says it can’t follow court order to take Lungu’s Barber to UTH, It’s costly-Attorney General

42

The State has failed to have Former Republican President, Edgar Lungu’s Barber, Shebby Chilekwa admitted to the University Teaching Hospital for medical attention following alleged torture by the police whilst in custody.

This is because Mr. Chilekwa who is a suspect in a criminal investigation was prior to the order by the court transported to the Kaoma District in the Western province for purposes of a possible charge.

Mr. Chilekwa is allegedly involved in the murder of a UPND cadre, Lawrence Banda in Kaoma District during a by-election in the area.

On Friday, Lusaka High Court Judge, Mwape Bowa ordered the state to have the suspect admitted to UTH for medical attention after a habeas corpus application by his lawyers.

However, the state has asked the court to stay the execution of the court order and make a review.

In their skeleton arguments in support of ex parte summons for an order to stay execution of the court order dated 11 Feb 2022 pending determination of the application to review or vary the said order, the Attorney General says it will be costly to bring back the suspect to Lusaka.

And the Human Rights Commission Chairperson, Mudford Mwandenga says fresh investigations have been constituted in the matter over the alleged torture of the suspect whilst in police custody.

Lately, the Center for Constitutionalism and Legal Justice has challenged the Human Rights Commission to take an interest and investigate the reported torture of former President Edgar Lungu’s Barber Shabby Chilekwa by the police.

Center Director Isaac Mwanza said that the reported torture of Mr. Chilekwa is a violation of his rights. Mr. Mwanza has told Hot FM News that the abuse of human rights is a departure from President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive for law enforcement agencies not to arrest anyone before carrying out an investigation.

Mr. Mwanza said that he is saddened that Mr. Chilekwa has been denied medical attention despite him having been assaulted.

Echoing Mr. Mwanza’s sentiments, Golden Party of Zambia leader Silavwe Jackson called upon the Human Rights Commission of Zambia (HRC) to swiftly investigate the allegations of torture of Mr. Chilekwa by the Zambia police.

Mr. Silavwe also called on the international human rights organizations such as amnesty international (AI) to take a keen interest in this case to protect the country’s reputation.

Mr. Silavwe has further urged the Zambia police and all the investigative wings to avoid draconian methods of obtaining confessions from suspects as no citizen should be presumed guilty before being taken to court.

Mr. Silavwe stated that no matter the gravity of the offense or the party affiliation of a suspect, at law a person is presumed innocent until found guilty by a competent court.

People who Joined PF for Economic opportunities and Jobs will Eventually Leave-Mwamba

23

PATRIOTIC Front presidential hopeful Emmanuel Mwamba has said many people who joined the party when it was in power to get benefits like economic opportunities and jobs will eventually leave because it has lost power.

Reacting to the resignation of central committee member Charles Kakoma, Mwamba said it was a drifting season for members from the opposition to the ruling party, the UPND.

On Thursday, Kakoma announced his resignation from the former ruling party saying that the decision followed due reflection and consultation with his family and friends.

But Mwamba viewed the move as a result of the PF’s loss.

“There are many people that joined the Patriotic Front especially when it was a ruling party to get benefits in jobs or economic opportunities. Following the loss of power, such people will eventually leave. We wish Mr Kakoma well in his future endeavours,” he said. “It’s a season of drifting members from the opposition to the ruling party.”

Mwamba said the PF needed people that believed in its ideology and pro-poor policies.

He said the party also required people who believed in its deepened care for the interests of the poor and the workers.

“PF requires people that believe in its ideologies, its pro-poor policies, and its deepened care for the interests both of the poor and the workers. If along the way we drifted away from such an agenda, we need to return to it,” said Mwamba.

“For PF members we need to remain steadfast and focused on rebuilding and rebranding the party. We need to work on earning the trust and confidence of Zambians again.”

Romantic Love among the Tumbuka People

8

By Mwizenge S. Tembo, Ph. D.

If you live in town and enjoy the Western world culture, you have seen many Hollywood romantic movies and read romantic novels, you probably believe one thing: the best way to express love and romantic feelings during this coming Valentine’s Day is through flowers, kisses, a card, a letter, text message, the cell phone, very expensive ring, and especially a romantic dinner with wine by candlelight. You might also believe that love and romance may not have existed traditionally in rural Zambia and other non-Western cultures back in the old days.

After all, aren’t marriages in these rural areas and non-Western cultures miserable and practically between strangers since they are arranged? Nothing could be further from the truth. Not only did single young men and women have choices, romantic love often bloomed. The only exception might be that the romantic love started and was expressed differently from the present Westernized lifestyle.

Take, for example, among the Tumbuka tribe of Eastern Zambia. The single young women in the village were known as mbeta and they all slept in the nthanganeni; a hut for young single women. On the other hand, young single men were known as jaha and they slept in the mphala; a hut for single young men. When the time to seek a marriage partner came, a jaha (young man) will dress at his best and walk often for kilometers to a village where he knew there was a particular mbeta; young woman he either knew or has heard about through the grape vine to be attractive and eligible for marriage.

Once he arrived at the village, he was shown the nthanganeni (single women’s hut) and word quickly rippled through the village that he had come, say for Tryness. There was tremendous excitement in the village as children were sent and gleefully scrambled to fetch Tryness who might be bathing and drawing water at the river. Once Tryness learned that there was a Jaha waiting for her in the nthanganeni, she went bonkers with sheer excitement and anticipation. How is she going to do her hair? What dress will she wear? Is he handsome? Will she like him?

The reed mat or mphasa on the beautiful floor of the nthanganeni single women hut where the two lovers would sit together sharing many hours of romantic bliss.
The reed mat or mphasa on the beautiful floor of the nthanganeni single women hut where the two lovers would sit together sharing many hours of romantic bliss.

Once the two saw each other and if their chemistry was just right, it might have been love at first sight in which case electrical sparks will fly. But quite often they may have found there was no mutual attraction and either one of them could back off. But if there was attraction and she accepted the proposal, the period of romantic love and courtship begins. This is the period of romantic love which is full of drama and has many legendary stories among the Tumbuka people.

Because the two lovers cannot stand being away from each other, there have been kusomphola (elopements). Depending on the distance between the villages, he might visit her practically every day during the period of courtship. The two of them are allowed to spend hours alone in the nthanganeni (single young women’s hut). They enjoy and experience kufwasa. Meals, often of nshima with delicious chicken, were served to the two lovers by the woman’s family. Since any sex was traditionally strictly taboo before marriage, the romance was even more intense and blissful.

Stories say that lovers stare and gaze into each other’s eyes lovingly, smile, act silly with one another, and playfully feed each other. Passers-by could hear loud hearty laughter, conversations in low tones, the woman giggling, and silence. Giggling, noisy, and snoopy kids were shooed away from outside the hut so that the couple could have privacy and kufwasa. When the man departed later in the evening, she escorted him in the dark.

The lovers might have exchanged chikole; a personal possession as a symbol of commitment and love for one another. The woman might have given him her bangle, bracelet, her ear ring, her scarf, and perhaps traditionally most intimate, one strand of brightly colored beads from inside her waist or mkanda. The man might give her his white well pressed handkerchief, or a chithumwa (small charm or love object he made he might always carry in his pocket)

A young single woman romantically in love stares through the hut window as she and her romantic lover spend time alone together when he is visiting during courtship.

Among the Tumbuka, romantically involved young women were known to become absent minded, to stare blankly into space as they went about doing chores, to lose appetite, to be tearful and lonesome. Some young women composed romantic songs dedicated to their lover. The women sung the song while pounding maize with a pestle and mortar. Young men in love might sing the composed song during the traditional dance such as mganda and fwemba. One such a song by a young man is featured in my novel The Bridge when the novel’s two romantic characters visit the village.

Young men in love might be miserable and restless everyday and can’t wait to walk to the other village to visit their lover. They might persuade their lover to skip the traditional stalled marriage and wedding arrangements and instead elope in defiance of custom, elders, and community. The romantic lovers were constantly teased by their friends and relatives.
