Covid-19 Cases in Zambia Continue Breaking Records

21

The last 24hours has seen our country record the highest number of COVID 19 in patients, new admissions, and deaths ever.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Technical Services Dr. Kennedy Malama has said in a statement that the situation is an indication that COVID 19 transmissions are still taking place at the household, community, and institutional levels countrywide mainly due to the general laxity in adhering to the Public health measures with congregate settings and super spreader activities still fueling the situation.

“We are aware that some of those testing positive may have contracted the infection days to a few weeks ago but the general observation of behaviors at funerals, markets, public transport, and in communities leaves much to be desired,” he said.

In the last 24 hours, 2,060 new confirmed COVID-19 cases out of 8,278 tests conducted were recorded representing a 25% positivity rate.

“Sadly, in the last 24 hours, we recorded a record high in mortality, having recorded Forty-Nine (49) new deaths.” Dr Malama said.

This has brought the cumulative number of COVID-19 related deaths recorded to date to 1,644 (classified as 1,004 COVID deaths and 640 COVID-19 associated deaths.

“The disease we seeing is very severe implying that most of our patients require high flow oxygen. We call upon various stakeholders to join hands with us in ramping up our oxygen availability.” He said.

“Losing lives at the rate we are reporting from a preventable disease is disheartening to us all particularly that Public health and social measures when adhered can have an immediate impact on the COVID 19 country situation.” Dr. Malama said.

He said that currently there are 19,087 active cases, of whom 18,104 (95%) are under community management and 983 (5%) are admitted to COVID-19 isolation facilities and that among those currently under admission, 665 (68%) are on Oxygen therapy and 145 (15%) are in critical condition.

Dr. Malama has since reiterated the need for Zambians to strictly adhere to COVID-19 prevention guidelines and has called for heightened community interventions to stem further the spread of the virus.

“We note that today, all the voices which were doubting COVID 19 have become silent as we can now put faces to those infected, affected, and indeed those who have died. Today we see funerals in our high population density areas which were previously spared. Today we see our mortuaries struggling with space in Lusaka due to the increase in the number of deaths.” he said.

Macky 2 dedicates the song ‘Sancho’ to parents

Macky 2 released the song ‘Sancho’ as a dedication to the sacrifices Parents make for their children.

“You can’t empathize until you put yourself in your parents’s shoes. Not everyone is built to empathize with others until certain life moments make them. The very first time you’ll miss your parents is when you start living in the dorms ku college away from home. Still you’ll ask for money and food without understanding how hard they have to work to support you. The first time you’ll ever feel grateful to have hardworking and supportive parents is when you graduate from college. You’ll realize not all your peers were fortunate to have had any financial support. These friends had to work to pay for school, food, rent and bills while going to school. But you’ll only truly feel grateful every time you have to pay for your bills, rent and food. If you lose your job and can’t make payments anymore, you’ll turn to your parents for help but with guilt for the first time because you’ll feel you let them down. Your gratitude will only increase to when you have your own child. Then you’ll know how much sacrifices they had to make for you including all those sleepless nights. Then you’ll make effort to build better relationships with them and spend more quality time with them. Say Thankyou Every Chance You Get.”

The Ministry of Health says it will resume the Covid 19 vaccination programme on Wednesday June 23, 2021 following the expected arrival of 108,000 additional doses of AstraZeneca vaccine.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Kennedy Malama said everything is on track for the resumption of the vaccination programme for Dose 2 of the AstraZeneca vaccine under the COVAX facility.

The Permanent Secretary assured the general public that government will continue to work towards acquiring more doses of the vaccine to benefit more Zambians.

Dr Malama said the escalating cases of Covid 19 cases are not unique and peculiar to Zambia alone but a phenomena affecting the region, Africa and the world.

He said the World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that Covid 19 cases in Africa have increased by 52 per cent in the past week.

Dr Malama said government is working towards taking the Covid fight away from hospitals and into communities by partnering traditional and community leaders on heightening community participation in the fight against the pandemic.

“We are pleased to note the interest to partner with government in the fight against the COVID-19 which is affecting both the rural and urban districts of our country,” said Dr Malama.

The Permanent Secretary said plans are underway to engage leaders of Marketeers, other traders and transporters to change behaviours aimed at curbing community transmission.

Dr Malama said 1,816 new cases have been detected in the last 24 hours out of 11, 589 tests conducted, bringing the cumulative total of confirmed Covid 19 cases to 126,973 cases.

He disclosed that 41 people have died in the last 24 hours with 35 from Covid deaths and 6 from Covid associated deaths.

Dr Malama said the death toll from the pandemic now stands at 1,595, with 965 classified as Covid deaths and 630 as Covid-19 associated deaths.

He regretted that there is an increasing number of persons brought-in-dead to the University Teaching Hospital mortuary.

Dr Malama said the mortuary is filling up fast and had only 86 spaces available as at Saturday morning.

The Permanent Secretary said he will engage the Ministry of Local Government to help manage disposal of unclaimed bodies piling up at the mortuary.

He said 2,076 discharges were recorded from both the Covid-19 isolation facilities and home management, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries to 105,960.

Dr Malama said there are currently 19,418 active cases, of which 18,501 are under community management and 917 are admitted to Covid-19 isolation facilities.

The Permanent Secretary disclosed that Coptic hospital has agreed to provide space for COVID-19 patients.

Dr Malama said government will continue to engage other health facilities and training and re-orientation of staff in both the public and private facilities is ongoing in order to ensure provision of quality health care.

He stressed that the Child health week will proceed as scheduled and appealed to schools across the country to provide space for easier management of crowds.

Dr Kaunda set yardstick for leadership – Maureen Mwanawasa

Former First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa says late President Dr Kenneth Kaunda laid a foundation and set a yardstick of what leadership should be.

Mrs. Mwanawasa says Dr. Kaunda’s leadership style was that of servanthood which Zambians can learn and practice in order to honour his memory.

She said this when she visited the funeral house of the late Dr. Kaunda in Lusaka today.

Mrs. Mwanawasa said the only way the late president can be honour is by living by his principles of peace, hardwork and leadership of servanthood.

“He has laid the foundation and all we need to do is go back to those notes. If he preached peace and we want to honour him, are we preaching peace? If he preached hard work, are we doing that? If he displayed leadership of servanthood are we doing that? In order to celebrate his life. We need to do all that,” she said.

Mrs. Mwanawasa said instead of making the day Kaunda died a holiday, it should instead be made a humanism day that was celebrated back in the day because Kaunda was a workaholic and loved hard work.

She said reinventing the humanism principles will help the country recover the moral fiber that has been lost in the youth, and humanism can help them understand the importance of hard work and being a part of community activities.

“This one day for humanism day can help us start repairing the moral fiber which was lost,” she said.

Mrs. Mwanawasa said it was unfortunate that Dr Kaunda has died at a time when the country cannot mourn him the way he should have been mourned because of the Covid – 19 pandemic.

UPND and PF in Ndola commit to Violence Free Campaigns

19

THE RULING Patriotic Front (PF) and the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) in Ndola have resolved to violent free campaigns ahead of the 12 August polls.

Speaking during a joint media briefing in Ndola earlier yesterday, Copperbelt PF Provincial Mobilisation Coordinator Mr Bowman Lusambo who is also the ruling PF’s Kabushi aspiring candidate said politicians ought to compete on ideas as opposed to engaging in violence.

Hon Lusambo stressed the need for coexistence among political players and the general public.

He mentioned that the briefing which he jointly held with the UPND aspiring candidate for Ndola Central Frank Tayali marked a new page in politics.

“Today is a day we want to flip a new page. I have been enjoying campaigns in the Kabushi Constituency with the UPND. When I meet the UPND, we do exercise our democratic rights by showing off our symbols” he said.

“We are just competing here, we are not here to fight. So Tayali, tell your people that you and I do meet. Why should our supporters fight? When I don’t have money I go to Tayali he lends me money, when Tayali is broke, he calls me Bowman am broke, I need some money that is the way we have been living.”

Hon Lusambo urged Zambians to uphold the peace that the first Republican President His Excellency Dr Kenneth Kaunda, who died on Thursday this week fought for, adding that Dr. Kaunda detested both violent and tribal politics.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tayali said there was no point to kill each other over the public office. He said Dr. Kaunda has left citizens a lot of lessons from which they should learn.

The contender acknowledged that the suspension of any forms of campaigns in Lusaka, Mpulungu, Nakonde, and Namwala was necessitated by violent acts.

“We are one Zambia One Nation, we are not enemies. How we treat each other today will determine how we will treat each other post-election. Governments will come and go but the country will not go. It is important that we exercise restraint,” he said.

The briefing was witnessed by both PF and UPND Ndola district Chairmen, UPND aspiring Candidates for Bwana Mkubwa and Kubushi, and PF aspiring Candidates for Ndola Central and Chifubu

PF will not apologise for the wisdom of child who sang for Lungu

The Patriotic Front has appreciated a child who sang a song asking God to guide and bless President Chagwa Lungu and says it will not apologise as demanded by the UPND Alliance through its Media Director Thabo Kawana.

In a statement released by the PF Member Isaac Mwanza, the PF said the action by a child to sing a song for President Lungu is in line with Articles 12 to 15 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and President Lungu’s guidance that society cannot talk about development and prosperity of Zambia without recognizing the voices of children who are significantly overlooked.

“The President has been consistent from his official opening of Parliament in 2016 that children should not only be seen but their voices must be heard as part of the development agenda or prosperity of our country,” said Mwanza.

Mr Mwanza said children have a right celebrate the achievements made by President Lungu and the PF in the last 10 years such as a significant improvement in infant mortality rate and nutritional services which have enhanced the health status of Zambians, especially children and their mothers.

“This has been possible due to improved health standards and construction of 650 health posts which has increased access and affordability for healthcare in rural areas. What the UPND leadership may not know is that under President Lungu’s leadership, Zambia remains on course to meet two targets for maternal, infant and young child nutrition and children remain thankful for the construction of 14,235 classrooms at primary education level and our promise to expedite the completion of all schools currently under construction,” He said

And Mr Mwanza has charged that children and parents had lost hope when their assets were privatized by some known individuals within the UPND who took advantage of the system to unjustly enrich themselves at the expense of their future but the PF is working towards giving back that hope.

New malaria diagnosis effective – Scientist

2

The Ministry of Health has embarked on a new system of detecting the malaria parasite in patients in Eastern Province.

The Microscopey method is now widely being preferred in comparison with the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) which has prominently been used to test for Malaria in the past.

Eastern Provincial Biomedical Scientist George Mwakanandi told ZANIS in an interview in Katete today on the sidelines of an Outreach Training and Support Supervision (OTSS) exercise at Katete Urban Health Centre that the Miscropey way of detecting Malaria is a more reliable method.

Mr Mwakanandi said Microscopey is the method that is in line with international health best practices.

He said laboratory staff at health centres are able to quantify the amount of Malaria parasites in a patient with the recent scientific innovation.

“It has improved the Malaria diagnosis. This is one area that has developed the clinicians and us,” Mr Mwakanandi said.

And Mr Mwakanandi said OTSS is a way of offering technical support where on-site training is offered to medical personnel at various health centres.

He said the programme has improved the staff at various clinics.

Mr Mwakanandi said the fight against Malaria has greatly been impacted by OTSS.

He said the programme has enabled staff to be more conversant with approaching Malaria diagnosis in an effective way.

“For example this facility, we now have staff that are recognised at national level that they are able to detect Malaria parasites in the blood stream,” Mr Mwakanandi said.

KK and FTJ shaped Zambia’s destiny in ways that need to be remembered and respectfully reflected upon

18

By Nkonkomalimba Kafunda

Last week the country lost its first president and internationally revered statesman Kenneth Kaunda and also commutated the 10 anniversary of his successor Frederick Chiluba’s death. The two men shaped Zambia’s destiny in ways that need to be remembered and respectfully reflected upon, for a nation that does not appreciate its history is bound to be haunted and ultimately doomed by it.

As the former’s political career was in its twilight the latter’s star was rising as he ascended on a trajectory that would see him at the helm of the nation and the focal point of Zambian political social and economic life for a decade and beyond.

Arguably, the end of Dr. Kaunda’s reign can be traced to the night of June 30 1990 when junior army officers among them, but not led by, Mwamba Luchembe attempted to overthrow the government in an ill-fated military coup. This was the catalyst that set off a series of events that effectively sent Kaunda into retirement.

What followed less than a month later was the convening of a conference at Lusaka’s Garden house Hotel where like-minded Zambians discussed the reintroduction of Multiparty politics delt the death knell 17 years earlier through the enactment of article 4 of the constitution which banned all parties with the exception of the ubiquitous omnipotent flame brandishing UNIP after a plebiscite on the issue held in 1972.

At the end of the July 25-26 Garden house meeting, a pressure group was constituted to champion the return to multi partyism under the apt banner Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) initially led by Arthur Wina, (Husband to current vice President Inonge ) with several prominent members of Zambian society in tow, among them Dr. Chiluba, Lawyer Levy Mwanawasa. Vernon J Mwaanga, Sikota Wina, Simon Vukas, Elias Chipimo Snr Guy Scott to mention but a few.

The pressure they mounted on Kaunda forced him to appoint a commission of Inquiry chaired by Air Commander General Enos Haimbe (father of UPND Lusaka central Candidate Mulambo) that went around the country and got the people’s preferences which were overwhelmingly a return to Multi partyism.

Reluctantly but displaying what ultimately turned out to be misplaced confidence in his popularity, Kaunda repealed article 4 on December 3, 1990 allowing the formation of other political parties. The MMD which had existed as a party in everything but name, quickly formalized its transformation and its convention in February 1991 elected Chiluba president and candidate to face Kaunda in elections slated for October 31, 1991. The MMD emerged triumphant after annihilating Kaunda and UNIP with an embarrassing 80% of the presidential vote and 75% of parliamentary seats. It was the end of the Era of Safari suits, young pioneers the women’s league as the UNIP Comrades graciously accepted defeat and made a retreat from which they have never returned.

It was the dawn of the new culture epitomized by the smart double-breasted suit bright tie and matching breast kerchief. It was also the beginning of a painful but critical economic reform program that saw the closure of industries the loss of jobs without severance packages and a massive privatization program inspired by the IMF and the World bank whose young inexperienced Harvard and Yale graduates used our economy as a Guinea Pig for largely untested theories.

Chiluba’s was a government cemented by the overwhelming desire to remove Kaunda and once that was done and the hard work of governing a country in distress became a reality. Cracks, not well concealed from inception began to show, the cement’s questionable durability could no longer hold the stress.

In 1993, Chiluba fired his most powerful and influential ministers. Humprey Mulemba, Emmanuel Kasonde, Arthur Wina and Guy Scott were fired by remote, as the announcement was made while Chiluba was attended heads of State meeting in Asia.

As he strengthened his grip on power Chiluba weakened the Unions, the same unions that had propelled him to national prominence and as a consequence the presidency. He, quite literary, used the ladder and took it with him never to be used as a stepping stone again.

In mid-1994 his Vice President Levy Mwanawasa resigned after Chiluba rescinded Mwanawasa’s decision to fire health Minister Michael Sata for corruption when he had acted as President in Chiluba’s absence, In other countries that might have caused a political crisis but the master dribbler, that Chiluba believed himself to be, quickly appointed general Godfrey Miyanda, then MMD national Secretary and minister without portfolio. to replace Mwanawasa and it was life as usual.

In 1996 Chiluba was again the MMD candidate having defeated Mwanawasa’s challenge at an MMD convention with in excess of 2,800 votes to Mwanawasa’s paltry 63. UNIP boycotted the election after the constitution had been changed to bar Kaunda from standing so Chiluba faced Dean Mungomba of MMD splinter Zambia Democratic Congress winning with over 60% of the vote.

Chiluba’s last five years are membered mostly for his futile attempt to ensure they were not the last. An attempted coup in 1997 has been largely forgotten though he used it to detain political enemies real and perceived. He also introduced a law that made motor vehicle theft non-bailable successfully incarcerating his rival for the first lady’s affections on trumped-up charges and incarceration that led to the death of the Don Juan, Archie Mactribouy. Another casualty of Chiluba’s jails was Zadeco leader Mungomba who contracted TB while in prison and later died of the dehumanizing ailment. After failing in his attempt to cling to power Chiluba ordained Mwanawasa as his successor and at elections, in December 2001 Mwanawasa narrowly edged UPND’s Anderson MMazoka by 1 percentage point (28% to Mazoka’s 27%) to become Zambia’s third President.

In the end, how do we as students of politics, governance, and history judge our two fallen leaders?

Dr. Kaunda’s enduring legacy would be his free education which allowed generations to rise from abject poverty to the educated elite that was to run the country in the future.

He also came up with massive infrastructure projects, nationalized the economy Zambianised key jobs and helped liberate Southern Africa. But Kaunda’s regime was also repressive and saw many detentions and sudden unexplained deaths. Our society was a semi police state and for every four adults, it was believed one would be an operative of the powerful Office of the President security apparatus. The economy was run aground and shortages of almost everything from toilet paper to cooking oil were prevalent. He also left an unhealthy treasury with astronomical debt, crumbling infrastructure, and declining social services in health education and social protection.

Chiluba inherited this and set about the Herculean task of restructuring the economy on other people’s terms bringing about much suffering and misery. By and large, he tolerated the free press, and fun dental freedoms of assembly, speech, movement were largely guaranteed. He also set up the environment that allowed for debt forgiveness and cancellation that was achieved in the Mwanawa era.

All in the two played their parts in two very different ways at two very different eras. As to whether they were equal to the tasks they had chosen to take up by seeking election to the presidency remains subject of debate in many a drinking place, particularly this sad but momentous weekend.

Napsa Stars Womens Team Disbanded

1

Napsa Stars Women Football Club have withdrawn from the FAZ Lusaka Province League citing ‘internal challenges’.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has since invoked the process of de-registration of the club.

FAZ has further asked the club to meet all its obligations to players and technical bench before dissolution.

“We regret that this has happened at the time CAF is deliberating on compulsory women teams for all teams participating in the CAF Inter-Club competition,” said FAZ General Secretary Adrian Kashala.

“However, we will go ahead and follow the constitutional procedure of de-registration as the club was recently admitted as a member of FAZ at the last Annual General Meeting held in Kabwe.”
