Police Chief sternly warns groups planing to hold a protest to demand the release of Spax

The Inspector-General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has said that Zambia Police has received information that some groupings on the Copperbelt have printed some T-shirts and are planning to hold an illegal protest demanding for the release of Kabaso Mulenga popularly known as Spax who is in our custody.

In a statement released to the media, the Police Chief said that warned people behind the mobilization of the protest plans to reconsider their position or be dealt with ruthlessly by what he termed men and women in uniform.

“This Country has got laws which guide on all processions and protests hence any act that is contrary to the provisions of the law shall not be tolerated at any point,” the Police Chief said, reminding all the organisers of the impending illegal protest that going ahead with their planned activity will be unlawful as provisions of the law have not been followed.

“All officers are on high alert and will not tolerate any lawlessness to take root in this country,” Mr Kangaja said before concluding with a further warning that acts of lawlessness that characterized Chingola in the recent past will this time be dealt with a heavy hand and that the warning must be taken seriously.

Early this week, Zambia Police in Lusaka warned and cautioned Baba Kabaso Mulenga commonly known as Sparks of Chingola on the Copperbelt for one count of Murder.

According to Zambia Police, the murder occurred in Chingola on the Copperbelt contrary to section 200 Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia. The suspect was further warned and cautioned for one count of Unauthorized use of Uniforms contrary to section 6 (i)(a) of the National Security Act Cap 111 of the Laws of Zambia.

The suspect was apprehended on 26th February, 2020 and he remains detained in police custody.

Zanaco striker Chitiya Mususu says they are not throwing in the towel against Pyramids FC despite an uphill battle awaiting them in Sunday’s 2019/2020 CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal last leg decider in Cairo.

The Zambian club head to Cairo after losing quarterfinal first leg, home match 3-0 on March 1 in Lusaka to the Egyptian upstarts.

Both Zanaco and Pyramids are making their continental quarterfinal debuts.

“Anything is possible as long as we work hard as a team we shall qualify. It is a hard task but we have to fight hard,” Mususu said.

“We can do it and if we all believe in ourselves, everything will work out.”

However, no Zambian club has won away in Egypt or eliminated an Egyptian team from continental competition.

Meanwhile, Mususu returns to the Zanaco fold after missing the first leg defeat due to a hamstring injury he sustained in league action for the club on February 22 in a 2-0 league win over Buildcon.

“I wouldn’t say I am 100 percent but I have a thigh patch to protect my hamstring but I am able to play, so I can say I am 80-85 percent fit,”Mususu said.

Nevers Mumba weighs in on Zambia’s Award Winning Photographer Chellah Tukuta’s Marital Problems

Movement For Multiparty Democracy (MMD) President Nevers Mumba has weighed in on the marital troubles that Zambia’s multiple award-winning Photographer has found himself in.

According to reports, Cornelius Chellah Mulenga Tukuta to social media to post images of himself with his newly found lover by the name of Carol in order to punish his wife Chanda , whom the couple has two children.

Dr. Mumba condemned Mr. Tukuta for his behavior but reached out for his healing, adding that, in working through his restitution, MMD expects that Mr. Tukuta shall offer a full-hearted apology to both his family and to the many friends that have held him in high esteem.

MY COUNSEL TO CHELLAH TUKUTA:

In the past few days, inappropriate content and pictures involving and depicting one, Cornelius Tukuta Chellah have been circulating on social media. My interest to make a comment arises from the fact that, Cornelius has been working on our media team as a photographer.

To say the least, the pictures have been gross and none of us in the team ever thought our greatly talented young man would take such an immoral detour from the values that we all consider critical to national building. As leader of the New Hope MMD, I wish to place it on record that I condemn this inappropriate behavior and distance the party from the character that Cornelius has depicted over the past few days.

Every leader faces moments when someone around them suffers a moral setback, becomes corrupt or just goes rogue. At this moment it’s the leader’s values and strength of leadership which are on trial. Since these assistants are usually very close and sometimes even humanly “indispensable” most leaders fail to provide leadership in such moments. It is such inaction to speak out against the wrongs of those close to us that shows our own failure to provide leadership.

Cornelius is a gifted young man. A prolific photographer of international acclaim. He is a CNN Africa Photographer Award Winner. He is one of Zambia’s best. It is therefore extremely painful for me to see him sink so low morally and pose a threat to the very standard of morals that have brought us together as a team.

The sanctity of family is the bedrock of any resilient society. Cornelius is a married man with two beautiful children. His responsibility is to love his wife and children and protect them from anything that could harm them including public ridicule. His conduct therefore is highly regrettable.

While some leaders may publicly disown one who falters as Cornelius has, we have decided to provide counseling and help for him to overcome this moral failure. We trust the Lord that in his mercy, our young man shall rise up and be the responsible husband, father and citizen he needs to be. We condemn his behavior but we reach out for his healing.

In working through this restitution we expect that Cornelius shall offer a full hearted apology to both his family and to the many friends that have held him in high esteem.

Until this is done he has been advised that He WILL NOT to carry out any role in the New Hope MMD media team. We consider character to be more useful than the gift he has. We remain hopeful that the counsel and measures taken shall assist in bringing restoration to Mr Chellah.

Zamtel erects 658 new sites countrywide

Zamtel erects 658 new sites countrywide

State run telecoms firm Zamtel has announced that it has so far erected 658 new communication towers countrywide.

Zamtel Chief Executive Officer Sydney Mupeta said the 658 new sites are part of the 1009 new communication towers to be erected as part of the GRZ Communication Tower project.

Mr Mupeta said the remaining 351 sites are planned for completion within this year.

He was speaking on Thursday when Zamtel commissioned a new communication tower at Chiwawatala Basic School in Mambwe District in the Eastern Province.

“In Eastern Province alone, we had 46 sites before commissioning the GRZ project. So far we have added 51communications sites on the network under the project bringing the total number of sites in Eastern Province to 97,” Mr Mupeta said.

“This leaves us with 57 sites to be commissioned within the year. As you can see, Eastern Province alone will have a total of 154 sites which will result in increased access to communication to a number of areas in this region,” he said.

Mr Mupeta said Zamtel views Eastern Province as a region with massive economic potential which makes a great contribution to the economic development of Zambia.

“We believe that adequate communication services will play an important part in realizing this potential.”

Officiating, Eastern Province Minister Makebi Zulu commended Zamtel for extending the network coverage to Mambwe District.

Mr Zulu who is also area Member of Parliament said the provision of communication services will help government roll out various services such as the Cash Transfer Scheme and the e-Voucher programme.

And at the launch event, Zamtel provided 100 low-cost handsets to the local people at a cost of K20 while Mr Zulu purchased a further 300 handsets to be given out for free to people.

12 foreign Buildcon players and Coach detained for playing in Zambia illegally

The Department of Immigration in Ndolahas detained 12 foreign players and the coach of Buildcon football club for various immigration offences.

This was in a routine operation conducted on Thursday, 5th March, 2020 at Levy Mwanawasa stadium aimed at screening all foreign staff employed by the football club.

The Serbian coach, Ivan Coric was taken into custody after it was discovered that he was holding an expired temporary employment permit while the 12 players detained include 3 Ghanaians, 3 Rwandese, 2 Congolese, 1 Cameroonian, 1 Burundian, 1 South African and 1 Ivorian.

According to Immigration Department Public Relations Officer, Namati Nshinka, most of the players in detention were holding expired temporary employment permits, while some had either overstayed their business visits or were in contravention of terms and conditions of their employment permits.

Mr. Nshinka said all 13 remain in custody, pending further immigration formalities.

Buildcon’s game against Nakambala Leopards which was scheduled to take place on Saturday has since been postponed to a later date.

President Lungu saddened by death of 26 people

President Edgar Lungu says it is unfortunate that 26 people have died in one day, who could have contributed national development.

President Lungu said he is disturbed that a second tragic accident has happened on Kitwe-Kalulushi Road, claiming 14 lives, few hours after the first mishap occurred on Ndola-Kapiri Road leaving 12 people dead.

“It is with deep regret that l have learnt of the second accident which has claimed 14 people bringing the number of those who have died in two separate accidents in one day to 26. I sympathise with the families who have lost their loved ones in this latest disaster,” he said.

And the Head of State has urged the Road Traffic and Safety Agency (RTSA) and Zambia Police Service to ensure that they work closely to bring sanity on the roads across the country.

This is according to a statement released to ZANIS by Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations, Isaac Chipampe.

And the Road Transport and Safety Agency is deeply saddened at the tragic loss of lives following two separate road traffic accidents that have claimed 26 lives today.

12 people died in a road traffic accident when a Rosa Bus collided head-on with a Volvo truck along the Ndola-Kapiri Mposhi road in the early hours of today.

Another fatal road traffic accident was recorded this afternoon around 13:00 hours when a Toyota Hiace minibus collided head-on with a foreign truck along the Kitwe-Kalulushi road leaving fourteen people dead.

RTSA Director and Chief Executive Officer Gladwell Banda has described the two accidents which have claimed a total number of 26 lives as a disaster.

Mr Banda has called for support from all stakeholders to put an end to the spiraling numbers of road traffic accidents which have now become a public health concern.

This is contained in a statement issued to the Media by RTSA Head of Public Relations Fredrick Mubanga.

Kuomboka Ceremony date set to April 4, 2020

The Barotse Royal Establishment -BRE- has set April 4, 2020 as date for this year’s Kuomboka Ceremony.

Barotse Royal Establishment Ngambela Mukela Manyando made the announcement today in Limulunga Royal district.

Ngambela Mukela also disclosed that this year’s ceremony will be extraordinary as the Litunga, King Lubosi Imwiko the second will also be clocking 20 years on the throne.

The Ngambela further disclosed that King Lubosi will also be celebrating 20 years as traditional ruler bringing the years of celebrations to 40 because he also served as senior Chief for Lukulu from 1980 to 2000.

He has since invited all well – wishers to join in the preparation of the 2020 Kuomboka Ceremony and also attend the prestigious ceremony that will be held in Limulunga Royal Village of Western Province.

Government has made significant progress in institutionalizing the prevention of corruption-President Lungu

PRESIDENT Edgar Chagwa Lungu has reiterated government’s commitment to fighting Corruption across the Board.

Speaking during his address to Parliament today, President Edgar Lungu said that his government under the corruption prevention interventions has introduced Anti-Corruption content in the school curriculum at primary and secondary meant to instill high integrity values in young people.

President Lungu noted the significant progress made to further institutionalize prevention of corruption adding that in 2019, 30 more integrity Committees were established in both public and private sectors bringing the total number to 94.

He said that the efforts being put in place are practical steps in closing all leaking taps in the management of public funds.

“With Regard to prosecutions, the anti-corruption commission secured 17 convictions and recorded seven acquittal during the period under review” President Lungu said.

The head of state urged individuals, the public sector as well as non state actors to continue partnering with Government in the fight against corruption.

“We must all hate Corruption in order to fight and eradicate it because corruption is the number one enemy of sustainable development and good governance,” He said .

Rodgers Kola Snubbed For 2020 CHAN Selection

Micho has named a provisional member 2020 CHAN team that will face Malawi in a friendly next week.

Chipolopolo will host Malawi on March 12 in a friendly at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

The team includes Zanaco and Zesco United players who have been unavailable due to pressing CAF Confederation Cup and league obligations respectively.

But notably missing from the list is Zanaco striker Rodgers Kola who has been in great form in both league and continental action with 11 and 6 goals respectively.

Nkwazi striker Emmanuel Chabula who has scored one league goal this season and Tapson Kaseba who scored three at Green Eagles before adding a fourth when he moved to Napsa Stars have both made the team.

Kabwe Warriors striker Jimmy Ndhlovu who is enjoyed a great 2019/20 season with ten goals, returns to the Chipolopolo fold for the first time in four years.

Regular call-up and Buildcon defender Isaac Shamujompa is out of the team due to injury.

But Zesco United’s experienced defensive quartet of Adrian Chama, Simon Silwimba, Mwila Phiri and Clement Mwape are in the team.

2019 COSAFA U20 Player of the tournament and Nkana midfielder Patrick Gondwe is set for his senior debut against Malawi.

Micho is expected to trim the team prior to departure for a three-match friendly tour of East Africa that will see Zambia play Uganda and Mali in a three-nation cup in Kampala on March 17 and March 19 respectively.
Zambia will also play Ethiopia in Addis Ababa on March 21 in transit back to Lusaka to prepare for their 2021 AFCON Group H qualifier doubleheader against Botswana at home on March 26 and away on March 29.

There is need for opposition political parties to work with government-Nawakwi

Forum for Democracy Development (FDD) President Edith Nawakwi says there is need for opposition political parties to work with government to address the various challenges the country is experiencing.

Ms. Nawakwi says politicians have a role to play in retaining the country’s national values and morals.

She says opposition political parties can work together with government despite having divergent ideas.

Ms. Nawakwi says what divides the country are politicians who want power at all costs and end up painting a bad picture about the country to the world that opposition political parties cannot work together.

She says for opposition political parties showing up at Parliament during President Lungu’s address shows the country’s character of unity and coming together to find solutions to issues the country is facing.

Ms. Nawakwi was speaking in an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka today.

President Lungu calls for the stiffen of laws against Gender Based Violence and child defilement

President Edgar Lungu says the increasing number of child defilement cases, remains a great concern for the government.

Addressing Parliament, Friday morning, on the Progress made in the Application of National Values and Principles, President Lungu said there is need to stiffen laws on the protection of the rights of children against social vices such as defilement, child marriages and teen pregnancies.

President Lungu however noted that sensitisation programmes against these vices have resulted in an increase in the number of cases being reported and dealt with.

“A total of 2,653 cases of defilement comprising 2,637 girls and 16 boys were reported throughout the country in 2019, while 2,578 were reported in 2018 of which 2,574 were girls and 4 were boys,” President Lungu said.

The Head of State stressed that more still needs to be done in addressing this challenge and has therefore implored traditional leaders, families, the church, civil society and law enforcement agencies to redouble their efforts in protecting innocent children.

“Families must desist from the temptation of protecting perpetrators from facing the law,” President Lungu added.

Meanwhile, President Lungu also expressed sadness that Gender based violence cases have continued to increase despite various measures put in place.

He said GBV continues to erode the moral fibre of society, hence the need to inculcate good morals in children at a tender age so that they grow into respectable citizens.

President Lungu said it is saddening to note that the number of GBV cases reported countrywide increased from 22,073 in 2018 to 25,121 in 2019 and that majority of victims were women and girls, accounting for 19,720 cases.

He said while he appreciates the efforts being made to report the cases, collective effort should be on reducing the incidences of Gender Based Violence in communities.

And President Lungu disclosed that to facilitate the protection, rehabilitation and legal support to GBV victims, 32 one-stop centres have been established in selected hospitals in all the ten provinces.

“We have also continued to establish fast track courts across the country. We now have 7 fast track courts, with one additional fast track court having been established in Kitwe in 2019,” he added

President Lungu said the courts are facilitating the speedy disposal of Gender Based Violence cases.

LAZ to Approach Constitutional Court Over President Lungu’s eligibility after he files in his Nomination for 2021 General Elections

The Law Association of Zambia President Eddie Mwitwa has said that the Association intends to approach the Constitutional Court to ask it to determine the eligibility of the candidates that will be floated by the various political parties for the 2021 general Elections.

Speaking in an interview with the Diggers Newspaper, the LAZ President insisted that the Constitutional Court did not declare President Edgar Lungu eligible to stand in the 2021 general election, contrary to assertions that they did, adding that the controversial question relating to President Lungu’s eligibility was not yet over, and that Constitutional lawyer John Sangwa, State Counsel, was right to say that the matter could still be appealed in the Constitutional Court.

“You do recall that when that matter that touched on the eligibility of the President was in the Constitutional Court and we were represented by John Sangwa, State Counsel (S.C.), and the views that he took to court were the views of the Association. We, unfortunately, did not succeed with the matter, but I think from what he has been saying, that is an issue that can still go back to court at the appropriate time and the PF top leadership had also invited Mr Sangwa to go back in the Constitutional Court if he was unhappy with that decision,” Mwitwa said.

Mr. Mwitwa said that when the elections are nearing, the parties have nominated their candidates, LAZ will go back to the constitutional court.

“When the elections are nearing and nominations are filed, there will still be an opportunity to ask the Constitutional Court to determine the eligibility of the candidates that will be floated by the various political parties. It is not a dead-end; it is a matter that can still be revived. Remember that the President himself, President Edgar Lungu, was not a party to that particular action. So, there is an opportunity to take that to the Constitutional Court on the question of his eligibility when he files in his nomination to stand for President in 2021.”

Mr. Mwitwa further said that the December 7, 2018, ConCourt ruling did not interpret specifically President Lungu’s eligibility to stand for a third-successive time at next year’s crucial election.

“…I don’t think that the were asked to interpret, specifically, on the eligibility of President Edgar Lungu in 2021. Sangwa, S.C., who was representing LAZ, our argument then was that it was immature to start determining that question because there was no election that was being conducted at that time. It is the same thing with Bill 10; you remember when we went to court, we were told that, ‘no, we have come too early, this is just a Bill.’ Our understanding is that the Court said when it becomes law, you can come back and challenge. So, it is quite similar,” said Mwitwa.

Chief urges subjects to reconstruct damaged police post

Chief Chitanda of the Lenje speaking people of Chibombo District has called on his subjects to contribute resources towards the reconstruction of Chiyuni Police Post.

The Police Post was recently destroyed by unknown people during a protest over gassing incidences in the area.

Chibombo District Commissioner, Barnabas Musopelo narrated that Chief Chitanda disclosed that, he has given his Indunas one month in which to mobilize funds from the subjects in their respective villages for the project.

Mr Musopelo also told ZANIS in Chibombo that each village is expected to contribute K3, 000 towards the rebuilding of the Police Post.

He said a consensus over the amount of money to be contributed by each village was reached during a meeting the traditional leader held at his palace with his Indunas.

Mr Musopelo added that some business people operating within the chiefdom have also pledged to contribute towards the project.

He however explained that the traditional leader was prompted to involve community members in the rebuilding of the Police Post after observing that crime has increased in the area barely a month after the institution was destroyed.

He has since commended the traditional leader for his initiative to involve his subjects in the project, adding that this will create a sense of ownership and responsibility among community members.

And Mr Musopelo said Chief Chitanda has offered a house where Police are now operating from until the reconstruction of the Police Post is completed.

President Edgar Lungu says he is considering constituting a Commission of Inquiry into the gassing of citizens happening in the country.

President Lungu says the Commission of Enquiry will help to determine the reasons behind this evil act which has left 50 people dead in connection with cases of instant mob justice meted out on those suspected of orchestrating the act.

Addressing Parliament on National Values and Principals this morning, President Lungu however regretted that some Traditional Leaders have been fueling the mob injustice leading to the killing of citizens.

President Lungu said it is sad that the gassing of citizens has now shifted to rural areas and has warned Headmen and women fueling mob injustices that they risk facing the wrath of the law.

The President has further directed Law Enforcement Agencies to bring to an end violence and tribalism which have in the recent past characterized by elections.

The President said elections should not be used to propagate sentiments of narrow sectarian interests which have potential to divide the nation.

He has also urged politicians to collaborate and ensure that such acts are brought to an end.

Meanwhile, the President has expressed concern with the increased abuse of social media among Zambians which he said has contributed to the spreading of false information.

He has since directed the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority and the Zambia Police to bring the culprits to book.

On abuse of alcohol, the President also expressed worry that this has impacted negatively on productivity in the country and has resulted in divorces and promiscuity among Zambians.

And President Lungu is disappointed that local contractors engaged to work on infrastructure projects have failed to execute their works.

He said he expects to see Zambian contractors perform to the levels of international standards which will see them get more contracts from government.
