Bailiffs pounce on Atlas Mara Headquarters, seize furniture, laptops

Operations at Atlas Mara Head Office in Lusaka have been paralyzed after bailiffs seized office furniture forcing workers to be sent home.

A check at the bank this morning found that workers were forced to surrender their office laptops and were asked to go home.

It was found that the action on the Bank was instigated by one of the Bank’s main creditors.

A white man was seen in the building attempting to confiscate equipment in the Control Room.

The unnamed creditor who was instructing a large team of men from the Bailiffs Office to carry out the operation was heard shouting that he is owed a US$ 1 million since 1996.

“For 23 years I have been waiting for this payment. I will not listen to the Lawyers, you will now listen to the Bailiffs because I cannot be waiting for a single payment since 1996,” the creditor shouted.

Bank officials led by Director of Marketing Kenny Ngondo attempted to convince the white man to at least spare the equipment in the Control Room as that is the heart of the bank’s operations.

Attempts to interview Mr Ngondo failed as he flatly refused to speak to Journalists.

And some Bank employees who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed concern over Atlas Mara’s high level of indebtedness.

“It is clear the Bank was not told the truth about the levels of liability before taking over Finance Bank. All these issues coming up are from Finance Bank days. Imagine, the Bank has 193 court cases from former employees and all of them will likely win the cases and demand to be paid,” one of the workers said.

By broadcast time, workers were still stranded in the car park as the Bailiffs went about their operations.

In 2016, AtlasMara which then owned African Banking Corporation Zambia Limited (BancABC Zambia) completed its acquisition of Finance Bank Zambia Limited, merging the two banks.

Big UEFA Win for Patson and Mwepu

3

Striker Patson Daka and midfielder Enock Mwepu are celebrating a big home win for RB Salzburg following Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League Group E opener.

The Austrian champions beat their visitors from Belgium, Genk, 6-2 to go top of Group E on Match Day One of the league stage of the competition.

However, there were no goals from Team Chipolopolo on the night that saw Mwepu follow proceedings as an unused substitute.

But Patson did see some action after he came on in the 72nd minute to replace man of the match Erling Braut Haland on the night the 19-year old Finn scored a hat-trick.

Patson, though, was denied twice in the 80th and ten minutes later before sending wide an effort three minutes deep into stoppage time.

Meanwhile, Salzburg top Group E on goal difference ahead of Serie A side Napoli who beat Liverpool 2-0 in Italy.

Salzburg head to Liverpool next on October 2.

Matete Eager To See Sydney Siame’s Form in Doha

1

Athletic great and national team assistant coach Samuel Matete says Zambians should be patient with sprinter Sydney Siame ahead of this month-end’s World Championship in Doha, Qatar.

Siame will be at the Doha meet, that will run from September 27 to October 6, a month after winning a gold medal in the 200 metres at the recent African Games in Morocco.

He will be Zambia’s lone envoy at the World Championship scheduled to start on September 27.

‘It is a very good step Sydney has taken to winning the African games but going to the World Championship will definitely give him a very good opportunity to see some of the best athletes and what where he needs to be in order to be at the top of the World,’ Matete said.

‘The African games was a very good platform to start to believe in himself that yes he can do it but I think he still needs a bit of time to get more experience. We cannot start to talk about big things yet. Sydney is still very young and he is still yet to achieve the bigger things,’ Matete said.

Siame timed 20.35 seconds to win Zambia’s only gold at the Morocco games.

‘World Championships will also give him a different feeling of what it takes to be a World champion. It is a very tough competition but with what he has done it has definitely given him a platform and a self belief that it can be done,’ Matete said.

Matete won a gold medal at the 1991 World Championships and was twice silver medallist at the same event.

He was three-time World Cup winner and won gold at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

Matete later won a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta in what still is Zambia’s last medal at the World biggest showpiece event.

Mr Kampyongo said Zambia has accepted the public apology rendered during the funeral of ex-President, Robert Mugabe in Harare, Zimbabwe, adding that Zambia would also welcome the special envoys that President Ramaphosa would send to meet President Edgar Lungu or government officials, to discuss the same matter.

Mr. Kampyongo said this in Addis Ababa when traveled to Egypt from Lusaka enroute Ethiopia.

Mr. Kampyongo is in Egypt to attend a Pan-African Forum on Migration being held in Cairo.

Mr. Kampyongo said the forum was important as it would address the myths that surrounded migration that in turn led to challenges such as xenophobic attacks.

The Minister further said Zambia had performed well in embracing migration through mechanisms such as integrating foreign Nations in communities.

Dora Siliya says remarks by Vernon Mwaanga disheartening and disappointing

The government has advised Vernon Mwaanga to use his status as a veteran politician and senior citizen to maintain the country’s unity and democracy.

Chief Government Spokesperson, Dora Siliya says it is indisputable that Mr. Mwaanga is a statesman having served this country from the pre-independence era and it is expected of him that his debate on national issues should be above partisan politics.

Ms. Siliya says the country expects a man of Mr. Mwaanga’s status to be a uniting factor and a voice of reason to the leadership and the nation at large.

She says government, therefore, finds the remarks attributed to Mr. Mwaanga in today’s Diggers newspaper that Zambia’s democracy, under the PF government, is receding, as disheartening and disappointing.

Ms. Siliya told ZNBC News in a statement that Mr. Mwaanga is aware of Zambia’s unparalleled record of good governance, transparency, accountability, rule of law and constitutionalism which this government has continued to promote.

She said on January 16th, 2016 at Heroes Stadium, President Edgar Lungu signed into law the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Bill which, among other things, reduced the powers of the President, which no other sitting African President had ever done.

Ms. Siliya said the PF government has transformed the Judiciary with the creation of the Constitutional Court and the Appeals Court in enhancing the country’s justice delivery system.

And Ms. Siliya said that never before in the history of the country, has there been such freedom of expression as is being enjoyed by citizens under the PF government.

She said the ongoing debate by citizens, including Mr. Mwaanga himself, on the Constitutional Amendment Bill No.10 of 2016 and other national issues, attest to this fact.

Ms. Siliya said only a government committed to democracy can liberalize the media landscape to the extent that there are now over 100 private radio stations and no fewer than 40 television stations on air countrywide and several newspapers.

She urged Mr. Mwaanga to desist from inciting public resentment against the government which does not befit his status as a seasoned diplomat and senior citizen.

Energy Minister Mathew Nkhuwa says there will be no increase in fuel pump prices before the procurement of the next consignment of crude.

Mr Nkhuwa has however, stated that the next consignment of crude oil the country will procure will be more expensive given the surge in global prices.

He says government has nevertheless been looking at making adjustments to the fuel pump prices owing to the depreciation of the Kwacha.

Speaking to journalists in Lusaka, Mr. Nkhuwa says given the persistent Middle East conflict, government is now considering alternative sources of fuel.

He says government is looking at introducing biodiesel, and that soon Indeni Oil Refinery will start accepting ethane for processing.

Mr Nkhuwa states that this is in order that the Country could have at least 10 percent of the fuel demand sourced locally.

Meanwhile Mr. Nkhuwa says Zambia now has an on-grid power deficit of over 700 Megawatts.

Opening a Swedish Embassy sponsored 3 days workshop on the design of the second round of the Beyond Grid Fund, Mr Nkhuwa has disclosed that the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) will soon start receiving submissions on electricity tariffs once Cabinet approves the proposed increment.

And Swedish Embassy Deputy Head of Mission, Karin Sverkén has disclosed that in the over 2 years that the Beyond Grid Fund has been in operation, more than 750 households have had access to electricity services in all the provinces of Zambia.

Ms. Sverkén says those that have accessed the electricity services include those in the wetlands such as Bangweulu where people now have solar power systems in their homes.

ZCTU rejects the constitution amendment bill number 10 of 2019 in its entirety

ZCTU Secretary General Cosmas Mukuka
ZCTU Secretary General Cosmas Mukuka

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has rejected the constitution amendment bill number 10 of 2019 in its entirety on the basis that it does not inspire workers.

Addressing a media briefing after appearing before the parliamentary select committee where the union made its position known, ZCTU Secretary General, COSMAS Mukuka says none of the proposed amendments in the bill is progressive.

Mr Mukuka says the bill takes away the power of governance institutions such as the judicial service commission and the state Audit commission from recommending appointments of constitutional office bearers.

He says the bill at its best is an attempt to expand the executive powers of the Republican President while taking away the rights of citizens to democratic governance.

He states that the ZCTU is opposed to all the proposed amendments to the republican constitution as set out in the Constitution of Zambia bill No. 10 of 2019 on account that the process was not inclusive, lacked consensus, is retrogressive in intent and does not reflect the will of the people.

Mr. Mukuka has however, clarified that the ZCTU has nothing against the National Dialogue Forum, but has serious concerns regarding the process and contents of the NDF process which has failed to achieve national healing and reconciliation, but merely produced the constitution amendment bill number 10 of 2019.

1

The United States (U.S) government, through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Small Grants Program, has this year awarded over K2.5 million to 13 community and faith-based non-governmental organizations, representing eight provinces in Zambia.

During, a September 12, 2019 awards ceremony at the U.S. Embassy, PEPFAR Country Coordinator, Bethany Baxter and Tina Chisenga, who represented the Ministry of Health, congratulated 26 representatives from the selected organisations.
