Government has urged Katete residents who had a bumper harvest during the just ended farming season to sale their produce to government through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).

Minister in the Office of the Vice President Olipa Phiri said selling their produce to government was one way of ensuring the country was food secure.

Speaking during the relief food (mealie meal) flagging off ceremony in Katete, Ms Phiri said without farmers selling their produce to government, it will be difficult for government to give out relief food once the country is faced with hunger.

“Those who had a bumper harvest, please let us sale our produce to government. If we don’t sale to government, where will government get what to give out as relief food to those who will be faced with hunger in the country?” she questioned.

Ms Phiri said the same produce that the FRA buys, is what government uses to provide relief food to its people once faced with hunger.

Ms Phiri said without the produce that is sold to FRA, government will not have what to give out to its people once there is a hunger situation in the country.

She said government’s storage should not run out as it will mean many people requiring relief food will not be helped.

The Minister also emphasized to those who had some maize, to store their produce carefully as hunger is looming due to the poor rainfall pattern experienced in some parts of the country.

Meanwhile, Katete District Commissioner (DC) Joseph Makukula appreciated the gesture by government towards the residents of Katete who had been hard hit with hunger due to the poor rainfall pattern experienced in the just ended farming season.

“We are very lucky here, because we will receive a big chunk of the relief mealie meal, instead of 12.5 Kilograms (Kg), we will receive 25Kg each household,” he said.

The district is expected to receive a total of 8,960 bags of mealie meal of which it is expected to cater for more than 8000 beneficiaries.

And President Lungu says the PF administration will continue to upgrade provincial capitals by providing all the necessary infrastructure.

He however said the expansion of public services will be done in tandem with the growth of the economy.

The head of state also noted that most infrastructure for public security services are in a deplorable state and need replacing.

At the same event, Home affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo encouraged President Lungu to continue enhancing development in the country.

Mr. Kampyongo said the construction of the provincial office will improve the operations of the officers.

And senior Chief Nkula thanked president Lungu for the continued developmental projects which cut across all sectors.

He noted that among the projects Government has undertaken is the construction of ZNBC studio which he said will promote arts and information dissemination in the province.

Deputy Parliamentary Chief Whip Tutwa Ngulube has said that it is surprising that those who condemned the current Constitution do not want to make changes to the document.

Mr. Ngulube said that it is wrong to only point out defects in the supreme law of the land when there are elections and change positions once the polls are over.

The Kabwe Central lawmaker says he cannot believe that individuals who said the fourteen-day period is not enough to hear a Presidential election Petition are today in the forefront opposing amendments to the constitution.

The proposed amendments seek to increase the days in which a presidential petition can be heard.

He told ZNBC news that those with reservations can still go to parliament and make submissions on the constitutional changes that they would like to see.

Mr. Ngulube said government will not allow the constitution making process to be an endless exercise.

He said it is time for Zambians to put their political affiliations aside and ensure the country has a good Constitution that will stand the test of time.

Tourism and Arts Minister Ronald Chitotela has called on the Church to continue praying and offering guidance to political leadership.

Speaking when members of the Bishops Council of Zambia visited him at his office, Mr. Chitotela said there is need for the Church to remain resolute in praying for leaders including the Presidency.

The Pambashe lawmaker said he has always found strength in the counsel of the Church hence the need for the Bishops to continue their good work.

And Bishops Council of Zambia representative Fred Chongole said the Church is there to strengthen leadership.

Reverend Chongole said the priestly is there to work with the Government of the day.

He said the Bishops are not there to influence the political setups in anyway but to ensure God’s will is seen in the country.

This is contained in a statement availed to ZNBC News by Ministry of Tourism and Arts public relations officer Sakabilo Kalembwe.

Meanwhile, President Edgar Lungu has called on the Church to counsel to politicians so that they unite the people beyond partisan interests.

President Lungu says the church should not go astray from the guidelines of Christian values and lose their light due to politics.

Speaking at the United Church of Zambia (UCZ) Chinsali main congregation today, the Head of State challenged the church to enshrine Christian values in politics.

He said this can be done through an increased number of Christians choosing to become politicians.

President Lungu said more Christians should join politics as this would help instill Godly values among politicians.

And President Lungu reaffirmed the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation and urged everyone to take part in the National Day of Prayer, Fasting and Reconciliation on October 18.

He also assured the congregation that he will render support to the construction of a modern church building.

And speaking during the sermon, Muchinga UCZ presbytery Bishop Reverend Festus Chulu urged President LUNGU not to be distracted by those that want to tarnish his name.

Bishop Chulu also encouraged the head of state to remain focused to his God given mission which is to serve the people of Zambia diligently.

Conflict Between Southern Province MPs And Goverment Is Hindering Development In The Province

Hon. Nakacinda During The Monze Meeting

Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) National Secretary Raphael Nakacinda has called on Members of Parliament in Southern to help the Provincial administration market the province regardless of their political affiliation.

Commenting on the forthcoming Southern Province Tourism and Investment Exposition set for 14th-21st September in the Tourist Capital during an interview on SKY FM Radio in Monze yesterday, Nakacinda said MPs being the representatives of the people should work hand in hand with the provincial administration to ensure that the potential of the province is widely marketed as it is meant to find solutions for the people in the province.

The members of parliament in southern province regardless of whether they are UPND are supposed to take charge of the development of the province.

He explained that it is the duty of the MPs to work with the administration in identifying potential investment opportunities in their respective constituencies as they are well placed to know what their areas are endowed with.

“….They are supposed to be the people in the forefront to make sure that the southern province Expo succeeds because they are the ones who represent the people and they know the opportunity in the province, now they are getting the Provincial administration in the province trotting around with hostility from members of parliament when in fact they are trying to find solutions for this province.

“I think if I had my way it’s just that I just have one vote if I had my way I would fire all these MPs here because they are a hindrance to development in the province. They are supposed to be at the center of making sure that development comes into the province. They identify opportunities, we now talking diversification other than just farming that we are known for, other than just livestock we are known for, there is potential in mining in the province.

“There is potential for cement manufacturing, there is potential for quarry and there is potential for gypsum mining as well as value addition for livestock which we are known for in the province,” he said.

Nakacinda further said conflict between MPs and Central government should not tolerated because both MPs and Central government are there for the people.

“The people who should have been surrounding Hamukale are the MPs from Southern Province saying minister what is it that we are going to do from Bweengwa this is what I think is the opportunity for our people there, from Moomba this is what I think are the opportunity for our people there…

“But there is a conflict between the MPs and the central government at least in southern province, that attitude should not be tolerated in politics. We may belong to different political parties but we are still brothers and sisters,” he said.

We Have To End By Elections, They Are A Drain To Resources – Mutati

MMD President Felix Mutati says bye elections should be stopped forthwith as they are a drain to national resources.

The MMD Leader notes that as his party ponders on making submissions towards the current Constitutional Amendments, they will submit that a mechanism be put in place to stop bye elections.

Mr. Mutati who said this in a directive to his National Secretary Raphael Nakacinda, says bye elections are a drain and worst of national resources and hence should be stopped forthwith.

He says the country needs money that goes to bye elections channeled to other spheres that would develop.

Speaking in Monze during a meeting with MMD party officials from Five Districts of Southern Province yesterday, Mr. Mutati also encouraged members to keep hope as the former governing party had chances of getting back to power.

He asked the members to help build the party from inside and stay focused on growing the membership for a possible comeback.

“We have made mistakes in the past but never should we fall again. This is our time to unite, stay focused and be truthful to ourselves as a party,” he said.

“Further, there is need to refresh ourselves by conducting elections from the very bottom level to Presidential. I will also be available to contest that election,” he notes.

He says as the “mother of democracy” in Zambian politics, anyone will be given an opportunity to contest any position at the 2020 Party convention to be held in Kabwe, without intimidation or being stopped.

“We are a democratic party that allows anyone to enjoy their democratic right and we don’t want to go to court again over an election, twapenga! ,” he notes.

Meanwhile, the MMD National Secretary Rapheal Nakacinda condemned the action of suspected UPND cadres that came to the lodge where they were having a meeting from with a view to disrupt it.

“So baya bantu mbatuma, to come and disrupt our meeting should be condemned in the strongest terms,” he says.

The suspected UPND cadres demanded that the MMD get permission from the UPND to hold a meeting in Monze.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Mutati and his National Secretary, Rapheal Nakacinda, attended Monze Diocese Bishop, His Lordship Moses Hamungole’s Silver Jubilee celebration of Priesthood and fundraising for a Cathedral construction on a five Hectares land offered to the Church by Government

Banyana end Shepolopolo’s COSAFA Women’s Cup dream

3

Shepolopolo’s maiden COSAFA Women’s Cup final ended in tears after losing 1-0 to hosts Banyana -Banyana South Africa at the Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Sunday afternoon.

Zambia settled for silver after being stunned by Banyana Banyana’s first half goal poked in by Tiisetso Makhubela.

Coach Beauty Mwamba’s side tried hard to come back into the game in the last half but South Africa were tough at the back.

Zambia never lost a match prior to this final.

Meanwhile, Shepolopolo’s loss to South Africa comes few hours after the Under-20 girls lost another COSAFA Cup final by 2-1 to Tanzania in South Africa.

Both Zambian teams have now settled for silver at the regional championships held simultaneously.

Lwandamina pleased with Zesco’s efficient victory

1

Zesco United coach George Lwandamina has described Saturday’s 2-0 away win over Black Mamba of eSwatini as an efficient start to their 2019/2020 CAF Champions League campaign.

The preliminary round, first leg match was also Zesco’s first competitive game of the 2019/2020 season before they kick-off their domestic campaign on August 31 at home against archrivals Zanaco.

Lwandamina again insisted that all of Zesco’s continental games will be treated like Cup finals as they seek their fifth successive group stage qualification in CAF Inter-Club competition.

“Every game you play in a Cup tournament is a final because on that particular day, there must be a team that drops out. I know it is two legged game, but I said when we came here that we will try and collect a point here and then finish it off when we go back to Zambia,” Lwandamina said.

Lwandamina, though, believes Black Mamba were no pushovers despite the away win that also saw Zesco keep a clean sheet.

Zesco took a 1-0 halftime lead through new boy Umaru Kasumba in the 7th minute, on Ugandan strikers’ club debut, before John Chingandu completed the job in the 53rd minute.

“I told you that it would be a tough game because, for us, it is just our third week of our pre-season, so this game was part of our pre-season because in football they are no short cuts,” Lwandamina said.

“They are a good side, they were able to knock the ball around, they had the endurance, and they saw it all in the 90 minutes and were coming at us and they didn’t falter.

“But having won the game here, and like I said it is part of the pre-season, we will continue with the preseason but with the view that we have to qualify to the next round.”

Zesco host Green Mamba in the final leg on August 24 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola needing a home draw to advance to September’s pre-group stage.

Shepolopolo U20 collect COSAFA U20 silver medal

5

Shepolopolo U20 settled for silver today in South Africa after losing 2-1 to Tanzania in the 2019 COSAFA U20 Women’s Cup final in Port Elizabeth.

The result handed Shepolopolo U20’s only defeat after winning their last four matches at the tournament that also included a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in the group stage.

Tanzania took a 1-0 halftime lead against Shepolopolo through Opa Sanga after a defensive mix-up that involved goalkeeper and Captain Anna Mukumbuta and her defender.

But Shepolopolo midfielder Loveness Malunga leveled matters in the 56th minute with a breathtaking long-range volley.

However, Portasia Mbunda put matters beyond doubt for Tanzania, matching Malunga’s breathtaking goal for Shepolopolo and the result sees the guest side from the CECAFA zone crowned inaugural COSAFA U20 Women’s Cup champions.

Later this afternoon, senior Shepolopolo will be hoping not to also be coming back home with silver when they face defending champions and host Banyana Banyana in the 2019 COSAFA Women’s Cup final.

Haalubono proud of Shepolopolo U20 despite COSAFA U20 silver

Coach Charles Haalubono is proud of Zambia’s performance at the inaugural Under-20 COSAFA Women’s Championship in South Africa.

Zambia emerged runners up on Sunday after losing the final to Tanzania by 2-1 at Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

Haalubono’s team had a perfect record prior to losing in the final to the guest team from East Africa.

“I am very much happy with the team’s performance. Because this is a newly formed team and they have really performed very well,” Haalubono said.

It was heartbreaking for the Zambian girls after conceding an 88th minute goal when the game was seemingly heading to penalties as the two ties were tied at 1-1.

“We played well but towards the end of the second half we lost concentration and started defending too deep,”Haalubono said.

Loveness Malunga scored for Zambia while Tanzania’s scorers were Opa Clement Sanga and Protasia Mbunda.

Show Us Your Manifesto, Then We can say you are worthy Competitor

Zambian youths must examine political Party manifestos…There are parties that only have insults and wish lists of “What” without “Hows”. Tragically, there are those ready to set Zambia up in flames just in order for them to earn the title of “President”

By Sunday Chilufya Chanda

We in the Patriotic Front have always stood for noble politics.

As a party we stand opposed to politics of character assassination, personality cult and regionalism. We refuse to pursue a style of politics where in order to belong to the inner circle of a given political order, you must belong tribally.

We therefore reject anything that defeats the nation’s motto of One Zambia, One Nation.

When politics fail to rise above character assassination, then the Zambian people have a right to put a stop to such degeneration.

No political Party should ever seek public office if it can not avail Zambians a manifesto-this is a demand Zambians -especially the younger Zambians must make. Zambian youth should seriously interrogate political Party manifestos to question whether or not they serve their aspirations for a sustainable and developed future.

So to young Zambians we say:

“ask all of us (politicians) to show you our manifestos and on that premise and our capacity to deliver embrace or discard”.

This is very important because today’s youthful generation cannot and must not subscribe to politics of tribal affiliation and insults. Today’s youth must reject *“manifesto-less”* political parties. They are deceptive and immoral political parties and politicians without manifestos are in fact a disservice to democracy.

It is sad to note that no other political Party in Zambia apart from Patriotic Front has a manifesto which becomes a social contract with the people.
What are these manifesto-less parties and politicians communicating? What alternative hopes and road maps are they selling to the public? Surely it cannot be insults, character assassination!

Tragically, there are those ready to set Zambia up in flames just in order for them to earn the title of President. The question is what it would profit them to become President of ashes and ruins?

On this score, we seek to educate our colleagues that the most important title in any nation is“citizen”.* Never do anything that hurts the interests of the citizens – as the late Dean Mung’omba said *”you cannot injure society and expect to go scot free”.

On our part as a party we are a grassroots party and have the ordinary citizen at heart.
President Edgar Chagwa Lungu both as President of the Patriotic Front and Head of State has the welfare of the ordinary citizen at heart as he spearheads the implementation of the PF manifesto through the execution of the Seventh National Development Plan towards the attainment of Vision 2030.

Our Head of State has demonstrated a leadership style that has been about more than just a title or a designation; he has rolled up his sleeves and has mingled among us as one of us. He works with us, he laughs with us and he cries with us. Therein lies one of his key strengths; his down to earth humility. His warm and sincere infectious influence and inspiration has rubbed on to the youth and the women and permeated through every social, economic and regional demographic across the nation.
He is an aggressive warrior when it comes to delivering for Zambians; and a cultured gentleman when it comes to treating people with respect.

While our manifesto-less detractors are frustrating development efforts in their “strongholds” and sponsoring fake news and hate speech through their network of malicious media, President Lungu is implementing a party Manifesto of Development and a Personal Manifesto of Love.

Let everyone be measured by their manifestos.

The Zambia Forestry and Forest Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO) has announced plans of progressively expanding their forest plantations to all parts of the country, in order to help mitigate the diverse effects of climate change.

ZAFFICO Managing Director Frighton Sichone revealed that it is the corporation’s desire to expand to other parts of the country, in order to help mitigate the growing effects of climate change and also help create job opportunities for the locals.

The ZAFFICO MD narrated that the company’s presence in Luapula, Copperbelt, and Muchinga Provinces, sitting on a total land capacity of 50,000 hectares has immensely contributed to economic growth through wealth creation, hence the need to supplement government’s efforts further, by expanding to other areas.

ZANIS reports that Mr Sichone also revealed that the Nakonde plantation has so far planted trees on a 300 hectares piece of land, and has created both direct and indirect jobs to the local community.

The ZAFFICO plantation which is the first of its kind, sits on a piece of land, donated by Chieftaness Waitwika of the Namwanga people in Nakonde District.

And speaking when he officially launched the ZAFFICO plantation in Nakonde District in Muchinga Province, President Edgar Lungu commended ZAFFICO for heeding to government’s call of maintaining forest reserves through the plantation of trees.

President Lungu encouraged the corporation to continue with their good cause of scaling up forest plantations in the country.

He has assured that government will endeavor to create a conducive and favourable environment for all investors wanting to invest in the forestry department.

The President was however saddened that some people have continued to cut down trees uncontrollably and the expense of the risk to cause harm to the environment.

The Head of State regretted that the rampant cutting down of trees and burning of charcoal if not quickly addressed, is likely to increase the effects of climate change in the country.

He added that it is therefore important that more stakeholders emulate ZAFFICO and help put up more forest plantations in order to beef up forest reserves in the country.

President Lungu further commended Chieftainess Waitwika for giving up some land to put up the plantation, and encouraged other Chiefs across the country to emulate this noble cause.

Meanwhile Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Jean Kapata revealed that her Ministry has collaborated well with ZAFFICO in opening up other forest reserves and closing up all clear areas with trees in order to promote afforestation in the country.

President Lungu who is in the Province for two days is in the company of Presidential Affairs Minister Freedom Sikazwe, Patriotic Front National Chairperson Samuel Mukupa, Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Development Vincent Mwale and other senior government and Party Officials.
