Climate change impact to cost Zambia’s economic growth-FAO

0

Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Country Representative George Okech said the impact of climate change will cost Zambia about 0.4 % of the country’s annual economic growth.

Dr Okech explained that without action, rainfall variability could lead to loss of 0.9% of GDP over the next 10 years.

ZANIS reports that Dr. Okech further explained that in responding to climate change impact on livelihoods and food security, most developing countries in Zambia have made progress by developing National Adaptation Programmes of Action ( NAP).

Dr Okech said this during the closing workshop for the Integrating the Agriculture Sector into the National Adaptation Plan Project in Chisamba yesterday.

The FAO Country Representative added that agriculture and food systems are partly responsible for increased temperatures and also fundamental part of the solutions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

And Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Songowayo Zyambo said government remains committed in ensuring climate smart policies.

Mr Zyambo pointed out that government is doing this through the promotion and implementation of climate smart agricultural practices amongst the farmers.

He said this in a speech read for him by Ministry of Agriculture – Director of Agriculture, Peter Lungu.

Mr Zyambo said government is encouraging multi sectoral approach under the Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP).

He has since implored key stakeholders to take advantage of the mechanisms to consolidate and synergise approaches in fighting climate change.

Mr Zyambo encouraged participants to share lessons and experiences by mainstreaming them in their daily roles and responsibilities.

In the 2018-2019 agricultural season, parts of Southern, Central and Western Provinces experienced reduced rainfall which resulted in decreased crop production.

The workshops drew participants from agricultural experts, academia and officials from government line ministries

2019 FAZ PROMOTION UPDATE: Eagles beat Kansanshi in first leg

0

Young Green Eagles drew first blood on Tuesday afternoon in their 2019 FAZ Super Division first leg promotion playoff match following a 1-0 home win over Kansanshi Dynamos.

The match at Khosa Stadium in Kafue was decided late in the second half through a Kingsley Fichite stoppage time goal to hand Young Green Eagles the three points in the first leg.

It was a massive relief for Eagles after the playoff was delayed for three days due to an appeal by Yeta FC who were disputing the docking points for using two ineligible players against the former mdi-way through the 2019 FAZ Division One Zone 4 season.

The FAZ Player Status Committee upheld its verdict paving way for Young Green Eagles to finally get on with the business of trying to secure one of the two promotion places up for grabs.

Kansanshi will host the Kafue side in the last leg this Sunday, July 14 in Solwezi hoping to overturn the result and finally make a long-awaited FAZ Super Division debut after stumbling on the final mile in the recent seasons.

Meanwhile, in the other playoff, Kabwe Youth Soccer Academy head to Lusaka to face National Assembly on July 13 enjoying a 1-0 home lead recorded on July 6 at Presidents Stadium in Kabwe.

Lawyer and Key Witness Mutati Absent In Court

6

Movement for Multi-party Democracy faction leader Mr. Felix Mutati today failed to show up at the Lusaka High Court where he was supposed to take the witness stand.

This is in the case where Winnie Zaloumis, the National Secretary of a rival faction led by Nevers Mumba, has taken Mutati and three others to Court to ask them who gave them authority to organise the MMD Convention of 2016.

Today, when the matter came up for continued trial before Judge Newa, Mutati who was supposed to take the stand as the first defense witness was not in Court.

What made matters worse was that his lawyer Jonas Zimba was also absent.

Judge Newa did not take Mutati and his lawyer’s absence lightly as she adjourned the matter to Thursday this week.

She has further threatened to proceed and close the case at the next hearing on Thursday.

MMD Deputy Spokesperson Peter Phiri in an interview after the case was adjourned said that Mutati’s “No Show” is an admission of guilt to holding an illegal Convention.

“We as the MMD are not shocked by this morning’s turn of events. It is clear that the rebels led by Mr. Felix Mutati organised an illegal convention under a tree without any authority from the party leadership of President Nevers Mumba’s National Executive Committee”, Mr. Phiri said.

“Since 2016, they have tried every trick in the book to frustrate this case. All their tricks have failed to avoid answering who gave them authority to organise there illegal convention. Mutati’s failure to appear in Court and testify is an admission of guilt,” Mr. Phiri said.

We didn’t suffer any system hack-ZANACO

19

Zambia’s largest bank by assets, ZANACO has refuted reports that it suffered a major hack on its Xapit Mobile Money system last weekend.

But some ZANACO customers have insisted that they lost money after some suspicious transactions appeared in their accounts and have challenged the bank to show responsibility over the matter.

In a statement, ZANACO through its Head of Marketing and Communications Mutinta-Musokotwane Chikopela said ZANACO management would like to assure members of the public and customers that there has been no security breach on its systems.

Mrs. Chikopela said the Bank has invested and continues to invest heavily in the controls and systems that host customer Personally Identifiable Information (PII) as security for its customers is of the utmost importance and is at the centre of it’s core strategy.

“Regrettably, it would appear that some of our customers have yielded to incessant pursuits of cyber criminals and shared their personal banking credentials,” Mrs Chikopela admitted.

“Following industry wide cyber fraud, we have embarked on a Fraud Awareness Campaign in an effort to sensitizeour customers and the public on how to protect their information and themselves against fraud. The campaign has run on various radio stations and on all our SocialMedia Platforms,” she said.

“We continue to advise our customers that details such as pin and/or passwords should never be shared online or with anyone else and if they suspect an attempt for fraud, they must quickly change their pin and report any suspicious activity,” Mrs. Chikopela said.

“We strongly appeal to our customers and members of the public to heed that cyber-crime is an industry wide situation and also cuts across different industries. Cyber-crime prevention is a collective responsibility as cyber-crime is on the increase globally.”

She added, “It is therefore each person’s responsibility to safeguard themselves and exercise extreme security as we all work towards our national financial inclusion agenda.”

But some ZANACO customers have insisted that there was an attack on its system which led them to lose their savings.

The clients who were affected have since called on the bank to step up its security measures.

Some ZANACO clients interviewed are disappointed that a big bank like ZANACO could suffer such an attack on its systems.

Some who were affected and lost their money in the process say they have been inconvenienced and are demanding that they be compensated their money.
Samwali Nancy Malitoli wrote on Facebook that she lost her salary due the system hack.

“My November 2018 salary together with my ka savings from my savings account disappeared from my ZANACO accounts and it did show that the money went to a FNB account under the name Chrispin Kila and it was a swift transfer authorized on a sunday at 12 Hours. Well, i reported to the bank and up to now nothing has been done and what is shocking is that even the book balance of K200 was wiped out and now they are say they cannot do anything because that transfer was pin generated…..What system is this!!!!total rubbish!.”

ZACCI happy with the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)

the agreement to establish the African Continental Free Trade Area

The Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) has welcomed the operationalization of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) at the just ended Africa Union 12th Extraordinary Summit.

ZACCI President Chabuka Kawesha has observed that the actualization of the AfCFTA has potential to help Zambia grow its investment portfolio and enhance its access to the larger trade market.

In an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr. Kawesha said Zambia’s involvement in pitching in a larger investment market is a positive move, which must grow and be led by the private sector.

He explained that currently the Africa Union estimates that implementing the continental free trade area will lead to 60% boost in intra-Africa trade by 2022.

He noted that both the Zambian Private Sector and government know that this background can increase Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in-flows and other wealth generation opportunities for the country.

Mr. Kawesha added that ZACCI takes cognizance of the fact that free trade agreements are designed to increase trade between two or more countries, which leads to wealth creation, and economic growth in a country.

He however, stated that Zambia’s real benefits would be realized once the high cost elements of doing business in the country are reduced and the country is open up more trade routes.

He said many high cost elements are triggered in country through local authorities and agencies. Policy positions have been shared, adding that it is time we actualize the visions of industrialization.

Mr. Kawesha said Zambia is currently on a weak footing considering the agriculture and manufacturing base which is low, unprotected and clogged with high operational costs thus leaving the country an import-oriented nation.

He pointed out that trade agreements are designed to cut trade tariffs between member countries, which must be protected and supported by the local private sector units in a free global market environment so that the country does not remain a trading and dumping ground for inferior goods and services.

He noted that the ratification of the AfCFTA will bring about increased opportunities and promote competition which Zambia’s investors and wealth creators need to keep at pace with other countries and breed growth and market opportunities.

He further said that the Chamber is alive to notable frameworks like the National Industrial Policy, Local Content Strategy and Export Strategy noting that these are good instruments that if implemented will increase Zambia’s economic and industrial outlook within the continental free trade area.

Mr. Kawesha has since implored government to continue promoting the private sector and deliberate cost reduction measures and spur wealth creation across a wider section of society.

Government says the 2, 000 refugees who are engaged in farming in the three refugee settlements will benefit from the US$100,000 donation which the African Union recently made to Zambia.

Commissioner for Refugees Abdon Mawere said refugee farmers in Mantapala in Luapula, Meheba in Northwestern and Mayukwayukwa in Western Provinces will be given inputs so that they can enhance their farming activities.

Mr Mawere said about 700 farmers in each refugee settlement will benefit from the Farmer Input Support Program for refugee supported by the AU funds.

He said government is impressed with the refugees who have taken it upon themselves to be self-reliant by engaging in farming.

He said Congolese refugees in Mantapala in Nchelenge District participated in the 2018/2019 farming season but did not produce much due to lack of inputs and late planting which was caused by late apportioning of farm plots.

He that’s all the partners who have continued to support refugees in settlement to ensure that they become self-sustainable.

The African Union has contributed a sum of $100,000.00 to Zambia’s work regarding the hosting of refugees.
The donation follows the recommendations made by the Permanent Representative Committee (PRC) Sub-Committee that visited Zambia to undertake the humanitarian assessment on Zambia hosting refugees.
The funds were sent directly to the Ministry of Agriculture to go under the FISP program for refugees to help make refugees self-sufficient.

About 280 refugee households in Mantapala Refugee Settlement cultivated maize while 50 and 40 households cultivated beans and groundnuts respectively in the 2018/2019 farming season.

The Commissioner for Refugees is hopeful that more donors will come forth to support refugees with farming inputs.

The Patriotic Front ( PF ) has adopted Zacks P. Mwachilele as its candidate in the forthcoming Katuba parliamentary by – election slated for July 30 , 2019 .

Briefing journalists at the PF secretariat in Lusaka this morning, the ruling party’s Secretary General Davies Mwila expressed optimism that the party will scoop the Katuba seat.

“The party had received seven (7) applications for the Katuba Constituency by-election which has been triggered following the untimely demise of the late Hon. Patricia Mwashingwele, MP. May her departed soul continue to rest in peace”

“As with every other democratic process, there can only be one candidate at any given time. I must emphasize here that we had a huge task arriving at one candidate because the names we received were all refined and members who could win us Katuba on any given day.”

Meanwhile, the Secretary General has urged the seven (7) who applied to contest the Katuba Parliamentary by-election to remain loyal to the party and work with the adopted candidate and ensure victory is attained.

“I want to thank all aspiring candidates to embrace Mr Mwachilele’s candidature, adopt a ward to work in during these campaigns and the Party shall give you support”

“In the same vein, I am calling on all camps that had existed before yesterday to immediately come together as one big camp for the Patriotic Front. Let us all work towards our victory,” Mr Mwila said

The Economic Association of Zambia (EAZ) says preparations for the fourth coming National Economic summit are progressing well, and has attracted participation from speakers and dignitaries across the globe.

Association President Lubinda Haabazoka says the summit which is aimed at discussing the country’s economic progress, will also be used as a platform to market the nation’s investment potential in various sectors of the economy.

Dr. Haabazoka noted the summit is expected to bring together economists, government officials, academicians, scholars from other countries, and university students, who will discuss economic issues affecting Zambia and the rest of the world.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today, that so far speakers from Nigeria, South Africa, Germany, Italy, Russia and the United States of America have already confirmed participation.

Dr. Haabazoka pointed out that investors from Italy have shown interest to attend the summit with possibilities of investing in the country’s agricultural sector.

He noted that the summit is also focused on enhancing the country’s potential as a strategic location in the region, for investment.

He added that for Zambia, the event will be used as a reconciliation tool to instil the common purpose agenda towards finding solutions for the country’s economic challenges.

Dr. Haabazoka further said that the summit is key to the country’s economic transformation, as it will result in increased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), increased production and employment creation, due to the improved rate of new investments.

President Edgar Lungu is expected to grace the summit which will be held from July 25th to 26th, 2019 in the tourist capital, Livingstone.

D-Day for Green Eagles at CECAFA

1

Green Eagles coach Aggrey Chiyangi insists they are not under pressure heading into Thursday’s must-win final Group C game after stumbling in their 2019 CECAFA Club Cup quarterfinals ambitions in Rwanda.

Eagles, who are making their CECAFA debut, face Proline after suffering a setback on July 8 when hosts APR beat them 1-0 in Kigali to win Group C on maximum 6 points and qualify to the last eight with a match to spare.

The loss came after Eagles began their Rwanda tournament campaign with a 2-0 win on July 6 over Somalia club Heegan.

Eagles must now beat Proline of Uganda on July 11 to seal the second and final quarterfinal spot in Group C.

Proline and Eagles are tied on 3 points from two games played after the Ugandans’ beat Heegan 2-0 on July 8.

“What is important is we will plan for Proline. We have watched how they play even though every game is different but at least we have an insight of the team knowing that this is the last game we are going to play and the winner between us and Proline will qualify to the next stage,” Chiyangi said.

“It (the loss) does not put any pressure on us. The reason is very simple; this is a game and they are three results.

“Once you get the worst result, the only thing is you plan positively for the coming game.”

Winner and runners-up in Group C will face Group D runners-up and winners respectively.

Group D comprises of three-time champions Gor Mahia of Kenya, DC Motema Pembe of DR Congo, Zanzibar side KMKM and AS Ports from Djibouti who kickoff their campaign on July 8.

Zambia’s Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage: One of the largest and oldest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world

WORLD CHIMPANZEE DAY 14 JULY 2019

CHIMFUNSHI GIVES RESCUED & ORPHANED CHIMPANZEES A FOREVER HOME.

Help Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage celebrate World Chimpanzee Day on Sunday 14 July and come visit the chimps and learn all about humans’ closest relatives from their knowledgeable Keepers.

Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is internationally recognised as one of the oldest and largest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world, located in the Copperbelt region 65kms west of Chingola. Chimfunshi started as a family-run wildlife orphanage when a game ranger brought a badly wounded infant chimpanzee to the cattle ranch of David and Sheila Siddle. Against all odds, and with care, protection and love the Siddle’s nursed that chimp back to health. The Siddle’s named him Pal, and to this day Pal lives at Chimfunshi. Once word of Pal’s recovery spread, the Siddle’s found themselves inundated with orphaned chimpanzees.

Today, Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is home to 130 chimpanzees, which live in large forested enclosures measuring between 19 and 77 hectares each. Each of these enclosures has a facility with 6 to 8 spacious cages, which are used exclusively for feeding, observing chimpanzee health, and providing medical care when necessary. This ensures that each chimpanzee, even the weakest, is provided with enough food. The large enclosures are guarded at all times, in order to be able to react to every irregularity immediately. Unlike many other sanctuaries, the chimpanzees at Chimfunshi come inside only once a day and sleep outside as wild chimpanzees do, building nests in the trees at night. At Chimfunshi, care is taken to provide the chimpanzees with as much freedom, protection, and species-typical environment as possible.
Chimpanzees are native to Equatorial Africa, and once roamed in vast numbers across 25 countries in West, Central and East Africa. But relentless poaching, logging, habitat destruction, and human encroachment have reduced the wild population to less than an estimated 150 000, and they are classified as an Endangered Species. Hunted for meat or captured for sale to foreign zoos and animal testing labs, chimpanzees are disappearing at a rate of 6,000 per year.

Chimfunshi is located in a forest habitat similar to the wild habitat of chimpanzees, but chimpanzees are not indigenous to Zambia and to release locally is not possible. Therefore, Chimfunshi provides rescued chimpanzees the chance to live chimpanzee-typical lives in lush, forested bushland for their natural lives.

Help Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage celebrate World Chimpanzee Day on Sunday 14 July and come observe the chimps and learn all about humans’ closest relatives from their knowledgeable Keepers.

Chimfunshi is open 08:00 – 16:00 (Gates close at 17:00). Entry fee is K60 for adults and K30 for children. You are welcome to bring your own food for a picnic or braai under the thatched Lapa – cost of for use of braai stands and charcoal is K50. Chimfunshi also offers overnight accommodation, if you would like to make a booking or make an enquiry, please contact the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage office on 0975519881or [email protected]. Chimfunshi is located 65kms from Chingola, off the Solwezi Road, you will see a large Chimfunshi sign on the right, leaving the main road onto the untarred road, follow this for 15kms to the sanctuary office.

Numba-Chipolopolo reevaluate for Botswana

0

Zambia assistant coach Mumamba Numba says Chipolopolo will not treat their 2020 CHAN qualifier opponents Botswana with the same strategy employed in June’s victory over The Zebras in the 2019 COSAFA Cup final.

Chipolopolo and The Zebras meet for the second successive competitive time in a space of two months when they clash in a CHAN second round, first leg qualifier on July 26 at Francistown.

Zambia beat Botswana 1-0 in the first meeting on June 8 in the COSAFA Cup final played at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

“It was a good outing for the team to playing in the COSAFA tournament and coming back with the trophy,” Numba said.

“But I think this is a different game all together and we have to forget about that, it is in the past.

“Equally, we have an insight about Botswana and they equally have an insight about us.

“But what is important is we adequately prepare so that as we go to play Botswana, we just go there and fight to get a win so that we come back with a victory so that we reduce pressure on our part.”

Numba is charge of the first two weeks of training camp while interim head coach Aggrey Chiyangi is away in Rwanda on CECAFA Club Cup duty with his team Green Eagles.

It will be Chipolopolo and Botswana’s second meeting at the same stage of the competition since the 2009 qualifiers that Zambia lost 1-0 away but won 3-0 in Lusaka to advance to the final qualifying round.

Winner between Zambia and Botswana will play eSwatini or Angola in the first leg on September 21 and last leg on October 18 to decide who qualifies to tournament Cameroon will host this January.

Meanwhile, Chipolopolo entered day two of the preliminary week of training camp in Lusaka ahead of their away date against Botswana before hosting The Zebras on August 3.
