Numba demands blood and sweat but not tears from Zanaco

0

Zanaco coach Mumamba Numba has told his players to ensure victory and not to leave the Sunset Stadium pitch in tears today against visiting Prison Leopards.

The seven-time FAZ Super Division champions are battling to return to continental action for the first time since 2017 after finishing fifth in the 2018 campaign.

Zanaco are currently third on 30 points, tied with second placed Zesco United and number four side Red Arrows in a tight race for the finish line in Pool A.

Leaders Kabwe Warriors, who host Arrows today, have a slender one point lead on 31 points in this dramatic last dash for Pool A honours.

Numba cautioned his players not to underrate second from bottom Prison despite beating them 2-1 away in the first leg in March because their visitors are in a last day relegation battle.

“This is a must-win game which will put us in a better position to represent this country if we happen to win,” Numba said.

“We have done everything possible to be ready for the game.

“We have told the players to take this game like we are playing another big team because if we can have that mentally, then we will be assured of getting a win on Saturday.

“But if we go into this game winning before it is played, we will leave the pitch crying.”

Meanwhile, Pool A will be hard to call until the final whistle on Saturday to know which one of the four sides have clinched the coveted top two places.

Zambia will carry out regular audits at all mines to avoid any repeat of KCM

Reuters reports that Zambia will carry out regular audits at all mines to avoid any repeat of the situation at Vedanta unit Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), which has breached the terms of its licence, the mining ministry said on Thursday.

Zambian President Edgar Lungu said on Monday the government planned to strip KCM of its mining licence and bring in a new investor. His spokesman said the move followed a number of breaches of the terms of the licence, without giving details.

The government’s action on KCM has added to concerns among the mining community about rising resource nationalism in Africa.

Mining Minister Richard Musukwa said the action at KCM “should not be misconstrued as nationalisation” and followed KCM’s failure to “comply with licence conditions”.

“The government will be undertaking regular audits at all the mines to ensure compliance and avoid the recurrence of the situation at KCM,” he said.

Zambia has already riled miners with tax changes that mining companies say will deter the investment Zambia desperately needs after repeated warnings from the International Monetary Fund about its debts and shrinking foreign currency reserves.

Honey produced in Zambia has successfully penetrated the European Union market and is on sale in several countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Norway.

According to a media statement by Abigail Chapondam the First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at Zambia High Commission in the United Kingdom, the honey is produced by a company called Mama Buci based on the Copperbelt Province and is being sold by large European retail shops such as Fenwick, Wholefoods and is also available on Amazon the worlds largest online retailer.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inaugural World Bee Day 2019 held in London at which Zambia was invited to participate in recognition of the country being a renowned bee-keeping and world honey producer, Mr. Martin Zuch, proprietor of Mama Buci, said “Zambian honey is the best in the world because it is natural, straight from the forest and it is multiflora, it has different favors, we have Summer honey and Winter honey, we harvest in July and December. I am happy to say that we have managed to penetrate the EU market and our honey is found in United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Norway and also South Africa. Here in the UK, our honey is currently sold in Fenwick, Wholefoods, Amazon, Daily and Organic shops. This is good but we can do more, we need to market Zambian honey more,”.

He said his company has won several international awards in the bee production sector among them a Gold star award and a Great Taste award. He added that his company was trying to create a premium brand that is purely Zambian.

He said Mama Buci exports between 400 and 500 tonnes of honey to the EU every year.

He further said Mama Buci is also producing cosmetics and other side products and wants Zambian Honey and wax to represent Zambia. He added that his mission is see Zambian honey and cosmetic products in the best shops in the UK.

Meanwhile, Mr. Zuch said there is urgent need to raise awareness about the importance of honey bees as pollinators and as an income generator in Zambia saying people should be encouraged to undertake beekeeping training so that people in rural areas can generate an income and contribute to sustainable rural development.

He said Apiculture (the activity of job of keeping bees, especially to produce honey) plays a crucial role for Zambian agriculture and forestry, since the pollination of bees is necessary for the development and survival of both agricultural crops and trees.

The inaugural World Bee Day was attended by representatives from several countries and Zambia was represented by two companies engaged in Zambian honey products, Namely Tropical Forests Limited (Mr. Ian Wainwright) and Mama Buci (Mr. Martin Zuch) as well as officials from the Zambia High Commission in London.

The Case of UPND “BOYCOTT” of Africa Freedom Day Commemoration

INTRODUCTION

As the title of Nelson Mandela’s book “Long walk to freedom” suggests, the struggle for the political emancipation of Africa and Zambia was a long one. Because of the significance of the day in relation to the heading, this article is also longer than usual.

A BACKGROUND TO AFRICA FREEDOM DAY

On 15 April 1958, at a time when most of Africa was under colonial rule, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the Prime Minister of the newly Independent state of Ghana convened and hosted the first ever congress of Independent African States.

The gathering also showcased the progress of liberation movements on the African continent in addition to symbolising the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.

It is at this conference that the concept of commemorating an “Africa Freedom Day” was born.

The day was mooted in order to “…mark each year the onward progress of the liberation movement, and to symbolise the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.”[4]

A few years later, on 25 May 1963, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, a country that has never been colonised, hosted in Addis Ababa the representatives of 30 African nations. By then more than two-thirds of the continent had achieved independence, mostly from imperial European states.

It is at this meeting that the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was founded, with the initial objective of galvanising the decolonisation of Angola, Mozambique, South Africa and Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The OAU pledged to support the liberation efforts of freedom fighters in the respective colonies, and remove military access to colonial nations.

Zambia after attaining independence from Britain in 1964 under the leadership of Dr Kenneth Kaunda played a pivotal role in the liberation of neighbours Zimbabwe, Angola and Mozambique and our people also paid the ultimate price with their lives to liberate our brothers and sisters in South Africa from the shackles of Apartheid.

Fast forward to 2002, our nation during the tenure of the Second President Dr Frederick Jacob Titus Chiluba hosted an OAU summit, and it was at this meeting that the continental body was transformed from OAU to the African Union (AU).

In spite of the changed appellation of the continental body, Africa Day continues to be widely celebrated on 25 May by Africans across the globe, in the motherland and in Zambia by everybody…well almost everybody except Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his UPND!

TRIBALISM; AN ARCH-ENEMY OF NATIONALISM & PAN AFRICANISM

The UPND under Mr Hichilema has for over a decade consistently absconded official commemorations of Africa Freedom Day ostensibly because he does not want to observe this day or even his own country’s Independence day until he can do so as Head of State. He has an entrenched “It’s either my way or no way” mentality that blinds him from celebrating others (even freedom fighters).

BLINDED BY THEIR OWN EGO AND TRIBALISM; UPND SNUBS CELEBRATING AFRICA

Mr Hichilema’s narcissism and self-centeredness is at the core of his unpatriotic attitude. His self-centeredness has gone to the extreme and it has produced in him tribal inclinations that override everything that celebrates national and Pan- African causes. His very introduction on the political scene was unpatriotic and perverted; it was an orgy celebrating Tribalism.

As Guy Scott the former Vice President of Zambia recounts in his recently released book “Zambian Politics: a Story in Black and White”:

_”When Anderson Mazoka the founding President died, a convention was held of the UPND (then as now, the United Party for National Development was the leading opposition party) featuring Tonga warriors with spears and friction drums, galloping around the convention and threatening anyone who would oppose the election of another Tonga to the presidency. The winner in these circumstances was the wealthy privatisation expert, the wealthy Hakainde Hichilema. There was an exodus of non-Tonga leaders…”_

With the systematic hostile ejection of non-Tongas from the time Hichilema took over UPND, its tribal stature has consistently dwarfed its national identity. Tribalism is by its very nature inimical to the concept of Nationalism and Pan-Africanism.

Samora Moisés Machel one of Africa’s greatest revolutionaries and first President of Mozambique once famously said:

_“For the nation to live, the tribe must die”._

From 2006 when Hichilema usurped leadership of UPND he expected all Southerners and Bantu Botatwe to automatically support him. UPND ethos since then has been a perverted form of Machels’ mantra: _“The nation must die and the tribe must dominate that I must become President”._ He is neither Nationalist nor Pan-Africanist, that is why Africa Freedom Day and Independence Day celebrations mean nothing to him!

Hichilema’s tribalism is NOT representative of the people of Southern Province and Bantu Botatwe. Hichilema and his UPND have betrayed the spirit of many of our founding national fathers and gallant freedom fighters who’s roots were in Southern Province. Together with their compatriots from other regions of our nation , they joined forces to overcome the shackles of colonialism to build the nation of Zambia where a common National identity eclipsed tribal character.

Can UPND and Hichilema’s unpatriotic nation-dividing agenda be compared to the following Southern Patriarchs?

1. HARRY MWAANGA NKUMBULA (15 JANUARY 1916 – 8 OCTOBER 1983)

Until the late 1950s, Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula was very much the public face of African nationalism in Northern Rhodesia (colonial Zambia).

While at the London School of Economics in the late 1940s, Nkumbula had been drawn into Pan-Africanist circles and worked closely with Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the future President of Malawi, with whom he co-authored ‘Federation in Central Africa’, ‘a point-by-point rebuttal of federationist arguments as well as the first comprehensive statement of political objectives ever made by Nyasas and Rhodesians’.

Upon his return to Northern Rhodesia in 1950, Nkumbula became president of the newly formed Northern Rhodesia’s African National Congress (ANC) and spearheaded the party’s vehement anti-Federation campaign. In early 1955 Nkumbula and Kaunda were imprisoned together (with hard labour) for distributing “subversive” literature that called for independence.

Column space does not allow me to outline the great contribution this great man made to the freedom we enjoy today.

Just prior to Zambia’s independence, Nkumbula chose to form a coalition with UNIP and was given the post of minister of African education. The UNIP/ANC alliance lasted until the pre-independence elections of January 1964, when UNIP won fifty-five seats to the ANC’s ten seats. Nkumbula became leader of the opposition.

When Kaunda moved to convert Zambia into a one-party state, Nkumbula in the interest of keeping the nation together signed a document called the Choma Declaration on 27 June 1973 and announced that he was joining UNIP.

Nkumbula was a nationalist who sacrificed his personal status for the sake of national unity.

Can the same be said of the “only-me-myself-and-I” Hichilema of today?

2. MAINZA MATHIAS CHONA (21 JANUARY 1930 – 11 DECEMBER 2001)

While Nkumbula remained as leader of the ANC when Kaunda broke from the ANC in October 1958 and formed the Zambia African National Congress (ZANC); Mainza Chona had been a member of ANC while in London and he had not made a choice between the two factions. Due to ZANC’s militancy and its unwillingness to compromise on the issue of “independence now”, Kaunda and other leaders of the new party were detained by the colonial authorities, and ZANC was banned in March 1959.

Chona and other nationalists broke away from the ANC and, in October 1959, Chona became the first president of the United National Independence Party (UNIP), the successor to ZANC. However, he did not see himself as the party’s main founder and he stepped down when Kaunda was released from prison in January 1960.

Would Hichilema have done the same?

As Kaunda’s loyal lieutenant, Chona was elected deputy president of UNIP, but he had to leave Northern Rhodesia to avoid a charge of sedition brought by the increasingly rattled CAF authorities.

Yet again column space cannot allow one to highlight in detail the exploits of one of Zambia’s first lawyers who later served as Vice President of Zambia from 1970 to 1973 and Prime Minister on two occasions: from 25 August 1973 to 27 May 1975 and from 20 July 1977 to 15 June 1978 and defacto second in command in the one party state when he served as Secretary General of UNIP, the ruling party, from 1978 to 1981.

The great Nationalist Mainza Chona put Nation above tribe when in the interest of laying the foundation for the nation of “Zambia” he left his tribesmate Nkumbula to join Kaunda.

_One wonders; what would the patriarch Mainza Chona have made of the “Only a Tonga Must rule UPND” campaign that paved Hichilema’s way to the leadership of UPND?_

There are many other examples too numerous to mention of our Southern Province freedom fighter fore-fathers who placed nation building above tribal interests. Hichilema’s UPND is a disgrace to their memory.

3. ELIJAH HAATUAKALI KAIBA MUDENDA (6 JUNE 1927 – 2 NOVEMBER 2008)

A freedom fighter and post-independence cabinet minister and diplomat who among other things played a significant role in negotiating the construction of TAZARA with the Chinese Government when Zambia was surrounded by hostile colonialist states. So significant were his contributions to the emancipation of his country and Africa that he was conferred the Friendship Medal by Fidel Castro’s Cuba.

_What would Elijah Mudenda, Fidel Castro or Che-guevara make of Hichilema?_

4. KEBBY SILILO KAMBU MUSOKOTWANE (5 MAY 1946 – 11 FEBRUARY 1996)

The charismatic and selfless Musokotwane who was one of the closest allies of President Kaunda. Musokotwane served as the 5th Prime Minister of Zambia from 24 April 1985 until 15 March 1989. _How does Hichilema and his UPND compare to Zambia’s fond memory of patriotic “Kebby”?_

5. BALDWIN MWANA KUMABU NKUMBULA (DIED 27 AUGUST 1995)

A son of veteran politician Harry Nkumbula, and Minister of Sport in the Chiluba regime, Baldwin was an astute politician in his own right.

_Would Baldwin have approved of Hichilema’s “Tongalisation” of UPND?_ _Would Baldwin have approved of Hichilema’s indefinite tenure and Life Presidency of UPND?_

6. VERNON JOHNSON MWAANGA (BORN 1939)

How does Hichilema’s narrow tribal agenda compare to the Nationalistic outlook of the versatile living legend Dr Vernon Johnson Mwaanga, freedom fighter, politician and diplomat par excellence who played a key role in championing China’s admission to the UN? How does Hichilema’s UPND’s Sinophobia compare and contrast?

There is really very little (if any) that Hichilema’s style has in common with the pragmatic approach of “VJ”. This is sadly underscored by how UPND cadres brutally assaulted Dr Mwaanga when as Chief Government Spokesperson of MMD Government of late President Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, at the time; he went to deliver a special message of condolences at the funeral house of UPND founder Anderson Mazoka. In a well-documented incident, his UPND assailants physically and verbally abused him for “being a traitor” i.e. being a Southerner and “not supporting a Tonga Party”.

CONCLUSION

Whereas our forefathers fought to raise national character above tribal identity, there are some that are working overtime to undo what our forefathers worked so hard to build.

Hichilema even spat on the recent National Dialogue Forum’s efforts which includes the honouring Freedom Fighters!

While Africans across the globe celebrate Africa Freedom day, there are some among us who are not celebrating because they are agents of international capital and are being used to provoke regime change for the benefit of their neo-colonial masters. They are but puppets and mouthpieces of capital!

They do not value it, so they will not celebrate it!

On our part, the Patriotic Front Government led by President Edgar Chagwa Lungu values and celebrates the efforts of our forefathers and we are now building on their foundation with our fight for economic emancipation and creating a better life for ALL.

Under-performing Council Secretaries in Luapula warned

LUAPULA Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa
LUAPULA Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa

Luapula Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa has disclosed that no Council Secretary will be allowed to leave the province without the permission of the Provincial Permanent Secretary.

The Minister says the move is aimed at ensuring that Council Secretaries who are in the habit always wanting to be outside the province at the expense of doing their work are kept in check.

He says the levels of indiscipline among Council Secretaries in the province is worrying and that it is time things are changed to enhance developmental progress in the Province.

ZANIS reports that speaking when he officially opened the Provincial Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC) at Henry Courtyard in Mansa, The Minister pointed out that there is need for Council Secretaries to stay in their offices and deliver on the huge responsibilities they have been given.

The Minister has since challenged Council Secretaries who fail to fulfill their responsibilities to resign, saying the province needs committed people if it is to develop and not those that want to frustrate the developmental efforts.

He has further urged Council Secretaries, Council Chairpersons and District Commissioners to work in harmony saying there is no need for pulling each other as they are all working towards developing the Province and the Nation at large.

Earlier Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Felix Phiri called on Civil Servants in the province to keep the momentum of the 2017 Luapula Expo alive.

Dr Phiri observed that is important that everyone steps up their efforts in ensuring that what was started is achieved.

He notes that there is a lot which is happening in the region, in terms of investment and that it is important that everyone puts in their best to bring development to the region.

Unbeaten 2019 title chasing Kabwe Warriors not feeling the pressure

0

Kabwe Warriors captain and midfielder Patrick Kasunga insists the only unbeaten side this season is not under pressure heading into Saturday’s must-win Pool A final day clash at home against Red Arrows at Godfrey’Ucar’Chitalu Stadium in Kabwe.

Victory on May 25 will edge Warriors closer to their first league title since 1987 with qualification to the 2019 FAZ Super Division Championship Playoff at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

Warriors must win to ensure qualification because a draw or victories for Arrows, Zesco United and Zanaco will see them left without even continental or ABSA Cup qualification due to the other top four contenders healthy goal difference.

Warriors enjoy a one point lead in Pool A on 31 points, while Zesco, Zanaco and Arrows are all tied on 30 points heading into their respective last day fixtures.

“We are not under pressure,” Kasunga said.

“We have played so many games this season and all the games were tough. So we know that even this game will be very tough but we are treating it like any other normal game that we have played this season.”

Arrows and Warriors drew 0-0 in the first leg on March 27 in Lusaka.

Meanwhile, victory for Warriors will see them play Green Eagles in the playoff final.

Eagles qualified to the championship playoff after winning Pool B with a game spare last weekend.

Victory will also confirm Warriors’2019 ABSA Cup semifinal place and 2019/2020 CAF Champions League qualification.

Nsabata fails to make 2019 COSAFA Cup team

4

Chipolopolo Second choice goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata has failed to make the final 20-member 2019 COSAFA Cup team announced by coach Aggrey Chiyangi on Friday.

The Zanaco goalkeeper is one of three high profile domestic-based Chipolopolo regulars who will not be making the trip to the COSAFA Cup that South Africa is hosting from May 25 to June 8 in Durban.

Nsabata has been Kennedy Mweene’s understudy for the last two years and was also first-choice during Zambia’s 2018 CHAN outing in Morocco where the team reached the quarterfinals.

He was also between the posts at 2018 COSAFA Cup in Polokwane where Chipolopolo finished second.

Chiyangi has instead settled on the untested duo of Lawrence Mulenga and Sebastian Mwenge from Power Dynamos and Green Eagles respectively.

Both will be making their COSAFA Cup debuts.

Also not picked is Green Buffaloes defender Adrian Chama and Zesco United left-back Simon Silwimba.

But Chiyangi has handed Silwimba’s club mates and fellow defenders Clement Mwape and Mwila Phiri their debut competitive call-ups.

Meanwhile, Zesco striker Lazarus Kambole returns for his second COSAFA and is expected to headline the team following his roaring success in Polokwane where he scored two goals in three games for Chipolopolo.

Zambia will kick off its campaign on June 2 when they enter the competition in the quarterfinals following a preliminary stage bye.

But Chipolopolo in the last eight await the winner from Group B comprising of Malawi, Namibia, Mozambique and Seychelles.

GOALKEEPERS:Sebastian Mwange (Green Eagles), Lawrence Mulenga (Power Dynamos)

DEFENDERS: Gift Zulu (Nkana), Lawrence Chungu (Zanaco), Clement Mwape, Mwila Phiri (both Zesco United), Isaac Shamujompa (Buildcon), Tandi Mwape (Kabwe Warriors)

MIDFIELDERS:Jackson Chirwa (Green Buffaloes), Benson Sakala (Power Dynamos), Kelvin Mubanga (Nkana), Webster Muzaza, Austin Muwowo (both Forest Rangers), Ernest Mbewe (Zanaco), Bruce Musakanya (Red Arrows)

STRIKERS: Lazarus Kambole (Zesco United), Chitiya Mususu (Zanaco), Tapson Kaseba (Green Eagles), Emmanuel Chabula (Nkwazi)

Stable marriages lead to stable nations – Chileshe

13

……..they also lead to good working environments

Minister Counselor at the Zambian Embassy in Berlin Mrs. Dorcas Chileshe has called on Zambians to pray for strong marriages because strong marriages lead to stable nations and improved working environments.

Mrs. Chileshe was addressing diplomatic and locally engaged staff at the embassy to mark the 15th wedding anniversary of Zambia’s Ambassador to Germany, His Excellency Anthony Mukwita, which falls on the 24th of May.

“Zambians have an obligation to pray for strong marriages as strong marriages will lead to a stronger nation”, Mrs. Chileshe said.

The Minister Counselor who has been married for 32 years and a mother of four children and three grandchildren observed that prayers were necessary as marriages have challenges that go beyond the ability of human wisdom to handle.

“Sometimes there are fights and other kinds of differences in marriage but if you engage God in prayers, He will always make available the strategies you require to navigate around the challenges”, said Mrs. Chileshe.

She said a stable marriage promotes a good working environment while an unstable marriage adversely affects working relations.

“This is why I call on you to pray for Ambassador Mukwita who represents the Head of State in Germany for divine guidance”, Mrs. Chileshe said.

The Minister Counselor then prayed for the Ambassador and presented him with a bouquet of flowers and a card signed by all members of staff. Earlier, First Secretary – Political Ms. Mildred Milupi congratulated the Ambassador saying 15 years in marriage was no mean achievement. Representing Locally engaged staff, Mr. Petros Bouch equally congratulated the Ambassador and wished him well.

In his remarks, Ambassador Mukwita expressed gratitude at the gesture saying it was the first time that at a place of work, members of staff came out to wish him and his family well.

“I want to use this occasion to renew my friendship with each one of you”, the Ambassador said.

He reiterated that an unhappy and unstable marriage leads to unhealthy emotions that adversely affect any working environment. The senior diplomat urged members of staff to contribute to a happier working environment, as that would facilitate delivery on economic diplomacy.

Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya says he sympathizes with UPND Members of Parliament who have been directed by their Leader Hakainde Hichilema to vote against the resolutions of the National Dialogue when tabled in Parliament.

Mr. Hichilema yesterday directed his Members of Parliament to vote against resolutions of the National Dialogue Forum when tabled in Parliament.

Speaking at a media briefing organized by the Opposition Alliance, Mr. Hichilema maintained that the National Dialogue Forum was a deception and an illegal process meant to extend the Patriotic Front’s stay in Government.

But Mr. Kafwaya said the directive on UPND MPs by Mr. Hichilema is a clear sign of dictatorship which will prevent the Members of Parliament from representing their people.

Mr. Kafwaya who is also Minister of Works and Supply wondered why Mr. Hichilema wants his MPs to go against the wishes of the Zambian people who he aspires to lead in future.

And PF Kabushi Member of Parliament Bowman Lusambo has described Mr. Hichilema as a sham for directing his Members to vote against the resolutions.

He said Mr. Hichilema is a selfish individual who is interested in serving his own ego thereby neglecting the people who voted for him.

Zambia Railways Limited says it has invested about $15 million in order to enhance its track safety record.

Company Board Chairperson Lubinda Linyama says Zambia Railways has prioritized track safety for its locomotives through the digitization program that it has embarked on.

Mr. Linyama says derailment of locomotives was the biggest challenge that the company faced in the past.

Speaking when he addressed delegates at the South African Reward Association Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, Mr. Linyama said his company has paid about US$15 million to procure state of the art signal and communication equipment.

He said the improved signaling and communication system will invariably improve safety on the tracks and reduce derailments of locomotives.

Mr. Linyama mentioned that lack of modern signaling and communication equipment has negatively affected operations of the railway company due to delayed delivery of goods.

He appealed to financing institutions and suppliers of signaling equipment to consider coming up with an integrated system that dealt with safety, communication and state of the art clearing systems in order to help improve the performance of the rail transport not only in Zambia.

Mr. Linyama said real time communication technology is key to the success of the rail sector in the SADC region which is facing a lot of challenges.

This is according to s statement issued by Naomi Nyawali, the Press Secretary at the Zambian High Commission in South Africa.

Cape Town Labour Court Judge Anton Steenkamp, who died after a black mamba bit him earlier this week, will be cremated in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, on Thursday, according to his family.

Judge Anton Steenkamp died in the northern Zambian town of Mpika on Monday after being bitten by a black mamba while camping in the bush. He and his wife, Catherine, were halfway through a three-month overland trip to Rwanda and back.

In a statement released on behalf of the family, Andrew Brown said Steenkamp’s body was taken from the remote part of Zambia, where Steenkamp was bitten, to Lusaka on Wednesday evening.

“In accordance with his wishes, Anton will be cremated in Lusaka and his ashes brought home by his wife,” said Brown.

The black mamba is by far the largest venomous snake in Africa with a maximum length of 4.5 m (specimens over 3.8 m are rare). Despite its reputation it is by no means an aggressive snake but actually a shy, elusive snake that is quick to escape but will not hesitate to strike repeatedly if cornered.

It is active during the day, often basking near a hole in an anthill or large rock crevice where it quickly disappears into if disturbed. When threatened it will gape exposing the black inner lining of the mouth and it may form a narrow hood.

The venom of this snake is potently neurotoxic and may cause difficulty with breathing within half an hour. Symptoms include a numbness of the lips, slurred speech, ptosis and progressive weakness. Antivenom is effective but often required in large quantities (10 – 15 vials).
