An Alliance of Forgery, Deceit and Foul Language

35

By Sunday Chilufya Chanda

Just what is going on in the UPND Opposition Alliance?

Firstly it has emerged that Sean Tembo the UPND alliance chairman in charge of finance cheated the Botswana government out of Hundreds of Thousands of Botswana Pula, as a result of a data collection report he forged and falsified. He went, he deceived and fled with the money! With such a person in charge of the “alliance” kitty, what hope is there for the UPND “alliance”?

And now Garry Nkombo presented a forged letter before the house with intent to
deceive!

Nkombo produced before the floor of Parliament, a forged letter allegedly confirming a payment of K3 million in favour of Patriotic Front Secretary General Hon Davies Mwila, which was purported to have been written by ZESCO.

ZESCO Ltd , in their response established that the said letter was forged, and malicious.
Infact, everything about the purported letter was fake including the letterhead, the tag line, type of paper and the signature.

The UPND alliance and its leader are specialists in all that is fake- they cannot be trusted with anything-especially state craft. Even the smiles they show one another are forgeries. The truth is that they don’t trust each other because each knows how fake the other is.

Is it a coincidence that the Late President Mwanawasa in his memoirs refers to UPND leader Mr Hakainde Hichilema as a person who cannot be trusted, labelling him as “Liar and a Cheat”? (A Deceiver!)

Is it a coincident that the bulk of online fake news is sympathetic to Mr Hakainde Hichilema, UPND and his alliance “partners”?

How come Mr Hichilema and his “alliance partners” have never condemned fake news?

How many times Zambia has witnessed numerous pieces of UPND “Black propaganda” — where they fabricate false information and malicious materials that purportedly come from a source in government, government agency, or the ruling party; yet it comes from them.

What do you call an association of vulgar tricksters, liars and smooth talking conmen? The UPND opposition alliance!

They are truly an “aLying-ance”!

Zambia is not food secure, says opposition UPND

The opposition UPND is stunned by what it has termed as the numerous lies from President Edgar Lungu that Zambia is food secure.

UPND Chairman for Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security Levy Ngoma said following the lifting of the ban on the export of maize by Government recently, it is common knowledge that most people will resort to export their maize because it fetches for more on the international market.

Mr. Ngoma said UPND is not surprised that such sentiments are coming from someone who has a record of lying in order to appease the hunger-stricken citizens and to win their sympathy so that he benefits politically.

He has challenged President Lungu to avail the UPND as well as the Zambian people with the criterion and data gathering methodology that he used to arrive at such conclusions.

Mr. Ngoma said had President Lungu been to all the four quarters of the country to understand the agricultural phenomena in the country.

He said the UPND is however not surprised that someone who doesn’t mind whether farmers receive their farming inputs on time or do not receive anything at all, would care much if their maize yields are good enough to sustain their livelihood.

Mr. Ngoma said it is unfortunate that President Lungu wants to create an impression that Zambia has a sustainable mechanism of feeding its people when majority Zambians go without three square meals, which, your guess is as good as ours: nshima.

He said it is frightening that the Head of State thinks that Zambia has a lot of food without taking into consideration a few factors such as the maize stocks at time of issuing the false statement; the monthly consumption by the people in the country and what are the expected harvests in the wake of a drought.

Mr. Ngoma said UPND further finds it hard to believe that President Lungu is telling Zambians that the country is food secure when the people of Pemba are feeding on wild fruits such as Masuku, Kawawasha, Vibuyu and Black Jack for survival.

He said the UPND is also surprised at Government’s plan to send relief food to the Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique that has been ravaged by cyclone Idai while most Zambians are grappling with survival, with the closest example being Siavonga District where, according to area DC, Lovemore Kanyama that the people of the District needed more than 800 metric tonnes of maize in relief food.

The Ndola District Chamber of Commerce and Industry says there is need to find solutions to the economic challenge the country is facing and avoid a restrictive measure that could negatively impact any direct foreign investment potential.

Ndola Chamber President John Samaras said although the Kwacha has been stable against other major currencies, the current exchange rate is under pressure and called for quick solutions.

Mr. Samaras in a statement said one of the solutions to the problems is to restructure the debt payments and use the central bank to decrease interest rates which may result in a more foreign income being generated.

He said in spite the Bank of Zambia (BOZ) having in placed a monetary policy in place, external forces are easily influencing the country’s exchange rate.

He said there is need to continue with the liberal environment, curb public external debt servicing and reduce on careless spending and borrowing by public institutions which are detrimental to the economy.

Mr. Samaras emphasized the need to build and support Zambian businesses which he said will spur production and reduce on imports thus reducing pressure on the Kwacha.

He said Zambia should not continue being an import based economy but invest in value addition industries that allow the country export finished products and earn forex

Kabaso Chongo to captain Zambia against Namibia

Kabaso Chongo has been handed his debut Chipolopolo captain’s armband.

The defender from DR Congo giants TP Mazembe will captain Zambia on March 23 in the team’s final 2019 AFCON Group K qualifier at home against Namibia at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

“It means a lot to me but I have to respect and pay tribute the captain,” Kabaso said.

“But we are ready for tomorrow’s game and the entire teams know what it entails.”

Kabaso will skipper Zambia in the absence of goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene who withdrew from the game citing injury.

Defender Stopilla Sunzu was also excused from the game that will see Zambia play an AFCON qualifier for the first time without any members of the 2012 winning team.

Meanwhile, interim coach Aggrey Chiyangi has told his players to ensure they record an honorable victory on Saturday.

“Namibia are no pushovers but what we have to make sure of is we have to get a positive result,” Chiyangi said.

“It is very important for us to realize that despite the prevailing situation, football is still a competition regardless of what the status of the game and lack of effect on our qualifying.”

Zambia head into the dead-rubber against Namibia bottom of Group K on 4 points and are four points behind second placed Namibia who are tied on 8 points with leaders Guinea Bissau in the top two automatic qualification brackets for the Egypt finals.

Vice President Inonge Wina has challenged the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to consider flexing its muscles on violent political parties and their candidates perpetrating violence.

Mrs. Wina says the commission can enforce and bar parties or candidates breaking the electoral code of conduct through acts of violence, by enhancing punishments.

She says time is ripe for the commission it to act on parties and cadres perpetrating violence

Mrs. Wina, who regretted the violence noted that it is detrimental to the nation, condemned the violence that characterised the recently held Sesheke parliamentary by-elections.

The Vice President was responding to a question raised by PF Mafinga Member of Parliament (MP) Jacob Siwale who wanted to find out what measures would be taken to curb violence in the forth-coming elections to be held in Roan and Bahati.

This was during the 45-minute Vice President’s question time in parliament today.

“There should be no more mapatizya formular anywhere this time around in the country. ECZ should flex its muscles on violent political parties and candidates that are breaking the law,” Ms. Wina said.

And the Veep has disclosed that the ECZ has expanded its Conflict Management Committees to include traditional leaders to be among stakeholders in addressing violence.

She added that the commission has embarked on vigorous sensitization programmes among them stopping political parties from transporting cadres to areas of election as this fuels violence.

The people of Luanshya in Roan and Mansa’s Bahati constituencies will go to the polls on April 11, 2019 to choose their MP.

Meanwhile, the Vice President has disclosed that the report on Commission of Inquiry into Voting Patterns and Electoral Violence is in public domain.

Ms. Wina assured that government remains transparent and accountable to its people.

GMO foods seized from Game Store, Spar and Food Lovers destroyed

The National Biosafety Authority has destroyed various food products and feed containing Genetically Modified Organisms which were seized last month from Food Lovers, Game Stores and Spar.

The products were seized for not having been subjected to risk assessment after which permits for import or placing on the market are issued by the Authority once such products are found to be safe for consumption.

The Authority pounced on the unsuspecting chain supermarkets at East Park, Arcades and Manda Hill Shopping malls in February for selling products containing genetically modified organisms which have not been assessed for their safety as food or feed, thereby contravening provisions of the Biosafety Act No 10 of 2007.

Under the regulation of activities relating to genetically modified organisms of the Section 10 Sub-section 1 of the Biosafety Act clearly states that “A person shall not research on, develop, produce, import, export, transit, carry out any contained use, release or place on the market any genetically modified organism or any product of a genetically modified organism or deal in any manner with any genetically modified organism or a product of a genetically modified organism without the prior approval of the Authority.”

The products which were destroyed in the presence of Zambia Police officers, and Store representatives include biscuits, chips, soups, spices, soya pieces, cornflakes and assorted crackers, whilst feed included dog and cat food.

The Authority has continued its surveillance, spot and compliance checks also seized some food products from Food Lovers Levy Mall.

“Surveillance, compliance and spot checks are ongoing. We are happy that some chain stores are complying, with a good example being Cheers who were was found to be in good books at the time of the spot visit. They had all the permits from their distributors.”

The NBA has been inspecting laboratories and research facilities with activities involving gene technology in Lusaka Province and these have been found to be complying in terms of biosafety standards with a few non-conformances.

“One laboratory which was found with non- conformances was asked to take corrective measures in order to be compliant.”

This year’s Zambia Open will run from March 25-31.

Club captain Kedrick Silondwa said Muthiya was one of the pre-tournament favourites.

“We are expecting about 20 to 25 local golfers this year. These include amateurs and professionals,” Silondwa said.

“From the professionals we are expecting one or two to make a cut and play in the main tournament but in terms of winning the only person I can talk about is Madalitso Muthiya,” he said.

Muthiya has at least made a top ten finish in his last four tournaments on the Sunshine Tour.

“In the past Muthiya has done well on the Sunshine Tour and we are hoping that even this time around he can do better and probably win the tournament,” Silondwa said.

Muthiya emerged 17th at last year’s Zambia Open in Kitwe.

Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Songowayo Zyambo has called on agricultural researchers to give farmers appropriate advice regarding which specific crops to grow based on the weather predictions.

This follows the crop failure which has characterized the southern part of the country as a result of long dry spells and extreme hot temperatures during the 2018/2019 farming season.

Mr. Zyambo said while the Metrological Department predicts which part of the country would receive more or less rain, researchers should package farmer information on which crops to grow in which area.

He said the Ministry is encouraging the farming community to adopt climate smart agriculture to mitigate the problems associated with climate change.

He was speaking during his familiarization tour of the Golden Valley Agricultural Research Trust (GART) in Chisamba.

And GART Executive Director Martin Muyunda said farmers should be encouraged to diversify crop and livestock production as part of climate smart agriculture.

Dr. Muyunda said GART is working on many different crop varieties that can stand the different weather patterns.

Former Archbishop of Lusaka Telesphore Mpundu’s violence warning after 2021 elections is premature and inflammatory

YALI Advisor Isaac Mwanza

The warning of chaos in Zambia after the 2021 general elections by former Archbishop of Lusaka Telesphore Mpundu is premature and inflammatory which must never come from religious leaders, the Young African Leaders Initiative has said.

YALI Governance Advisor Isaac Mwanza says it will be unfortunate if the sentiments by Archbishop Mpundu represent the views of the Catholic Church and the Bishops.

Mr. Mwanza said although the Catholic Church worldwide has never been known to perpetuate ideas which may incite the bad elements in society, YALI are also alive to the fact that some of the atrocities in which the people have participated have been fueled by irresponsible and careless statements by individual bishops.

He cited the genocide in Rwanda as one heinous crime that was perpetuated by individual members of the clergy who worked with some politicians.

Mr. Mwanza has since called on Archbishop Mpundu to reflect on his recent remarks that may be used as justification by some bad elements within society to cause mayhem and atrocious acts when they lose elections.

He has also reminded Arch Bishop Mpundu that the failure of the church-ZCID led national dialogue has been due to selfish ambitions among those who were tasked to lead the process as they kept bickering on taking the whole cake to themselves.

Mr. Mwanza said the Archbishop should have appreciated that Government has taken steps to give the national dialogue by giving it the legal framework rather than just leave it to the whims of those who wanted the prestige of chairing the process.

He has called on young people in Zambia to avoid being moved by inflammatory sentiments to cause violence when people lose elections.

“In any electoral competition, there can only be one winner of elections and those aggrieved with the result have the right to use legally provided means to air their grievances”, Mr. Mwanza has said.

Finance Minister Hon. Margaret Mwanakatwe (MP), yesterday held a successful meeting with Bank of America Merrill Lynch and other investors from Europe and America.

She described the meeting as ‘one of the most engaging economic management meetings’ she has had in the recent past.

The minister of Finance further praised the visiting foreign investment team of delegates on their professional approach and sound technical competence.

And Ministry of Finance spokes person Chileshe Kandeta also told Smart Eagles in a telephone conversation that the minister updated the delegation on the progression of Zambia’s fiscal reform program as well as the monetary policy thrust so far.

“I assured the investors delegation that the Government of Zambia will continue striking the right notes in the economic stabilisation and growth programme so that the nation grows and sustains both local and foreign investors interest in our economy” Mrs. Mwanakatwe said.

Early this year, the WSJ – Wall Street Journal reported that Bank of America’s Corp.’s wealth-management business grew its revenue by 7% to $4.99 billion from a year earlier beating against the odds from its Wall Street rivals during a wild fourth quarter. All this was amidst the violent stock-market swings at the end of 2018 which hurt other brokerage firms, diminishing client account balances and generating lower fees for personal-financial advice.(Beilfuss,2019).

The Zambian government in conjunction with the Ministry of Finance is making significant strides to enhance the most important inter-sectoral goal of improving the much needed conducive business environment for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

37 illegal gold miners arrested in Lumezi

7

About thirty-seven illegal gold miners in Lumezi district of Eastern Province have been arrested whilst twelve juveniles have been released.

National Parks and Wildlife Park Ranger, Joseph Bwalya has confirmed the arrest to ZANIS in Lundazi today that the suspects were apprehended on Tuesday morning in Lukusuzi National Parks following a patrol conducted by a team of wildlife officers.

Mr. Bwalya named the youngest among those arrested as Lawrence Mwale aged 21 of Kangoti village and the eldest as Lyson Nkhoma 69 of Kamwendo village all of Chief Chinunda in Chipangali district.

He said the suspects were intercepted as they were in the process of setting up camp in the national park so that they embark on mining without necessary documents; adding that twelve juveniles aged between 10 and 15 who accompanied them have been released.

Mr. Bwalya disclosed that wildlife officers recovered various items from the suspects which they wanted to use in illegal mining such as picks, shovels, buckets, axes and meshi wire among others.

He says all the thirty-seven suspects are currently detained at ZAWA offices in Lundazi and will appear in court soon charged with illegal entry into the park with the intent to conduct illegal mining contrary to the laws of Zambia.

Meanwhile the Park Ranger has warned people to refrain from entering the national park without authority, saying those that are interested in mining must obtain legal documentation from the Ministry of Mines.

Barely three months ago when twenty-two illegal gold miners in Lumezi district were arrested after being found conducting illegal mining in Lukusuzi National Park.
