The girl with the violin : Caitlin Deville steals the show at Stanbic Music festival

BlackJack Shoot Cape Town

String instruments aren’t just for performing classical music—dynamic Zambian violinist Caitlin DeVille, is living proof of that.

She has performed across the globe in more than 26 countries on 5 continents to date. She has performed for royalty, Presidents, world leaders and her loyal fans.

Her performances incorporate a myriad of musical styles, from pop and hip-hop, infused with distinctive violin riffs and spectacular choreography that give her live shows immense appeal.

Caitlin’s popularity skyrocketed after her amazing performance at the 2017 Stanbic Music festival. For many, myself included, it was the first time to watch her perform live.

KAPA187: For a lot of people, the Stanbic music festival was their first time to hear about you. Were you nervous about the reaction you would get from the large audience?

Caitlin DeVille : I think I was a little more nervous last year actually (2016 stanbic music festival) because I wasn’t quite prepared for the scale of the event, this year I was really excited to get on that stage again!

KAPA187: I was personally blown away by your unique performance. How was the experience of performing at the same event as the legendary R&B group Boys II Men?

Caitlin DeVille : Thank you! It was amazing – the crowd was incredible and that energy was electric! I only started feeling the pressure during the week before the festival as I was made aware that there were people out there that didn’t expect me to work before the main act. I had a key resource in the form of my elder sister though; she was very into R&B in the 90s so I had a pretty good idea of the sort of audience that was going to be there and what sort of set they’d like to hear as a curtain raiser. Boyz II Men are an awesome example of how classics never go out of style, I think any artist aspires to create music that stands the test of time and so it was so great to hear some of those classics live – ‘One Sweet Day’ did it for me because I was also a huge Mariah Carey fan when I was little! Their band was amazing too but to be honest it was our local musicians that shone the brightest for me, especially The Elect Band who backed James Sakala and Chef 187, they just bring it every time.

Being left breathless after her epic performance many fans were asking ‘Who is Caitlin DeVille?’

Caitlin DeVille : I’m a Kopala girl – born in Chingola but taken home to and raised in Kitwe. I had an amazing family life and was always surrounded by music and creativity. I travelled to South Africa when I was 18 to see if a career in music was an option for me because at the time there was just no way I was going to make a living being a muso in Zambia; I’d already given it a decent go for a couple of years at that stage. I was seriously looking into other career paths before discovering I could actually be a full time musician in SA. So for the past 10 years – I’m giving my age away now – I’ve been based in Cape Town but have performed in 26 countries and on 5 continents to date. My family is still in Kitwe so I still consider it home.

KAPA187: What made you take up violin?

Caitlin DeVille : I saw Vanessa Mae, an amazing violinist, performing on TV – she was playing a crazy looking instrument and I simply wanted to do what she was doing because it looked like fun. I was 9 at the time.

KAPA187: I would assume you are a classically trained violinist, what made you transition to a more pop-influenced electric music blend.

Caitlin DeVille : You would assume wrong but I’ll take it as a compliment! I had a teacher for my first year or so of training but she unfortunately left the country. I’m mostly self-taught and so pop music has always played a massive role in what I do. To stay disciplined enough to keep playing and progressing on such a difficult instrument I’d learn the pop music I enjoyed, by ear, in between the more serious stuff and that’s still how I prefer to do things.

KAPA187: Wow, I never would have thought you were self-taught, that’s great. You mainly work with an electric violin, what can you do with an electric violin that can’t be done with an acoustic one.

Caitlin DeVille : Wanting to play electric violin goes back to the beginning too, Vanessa Mae played an electric instrument on the TV programme I’d watched so that’s what I wanted to do too. I had no interest in playing a traditional instrument but my Grandmother happened to have one so it all worked out nicely and I had one to get started on! For many years I actually didn’t touch my acoustic violin but I recently started recording using that very instrument again. I prefer the electric for stage because it doesn’t give feedback and you can play around with crazy live effects a little more and then for my videos because they look super cool! An acoustic instrument has more soul for recording purposes though I think.

KAPA187: What genres of music influence you? Can you think of any specific tracks that have had a significant impact on your own music style?

Caitlin DeVille : I listen to a lot of house music and reggaeton these days but my favourite genre is probably symphonic metal, beautiful melodies with rock band power backing them – they all influence me in different ways. Specific tracks: ‘Insomnia’ by Faithless, ‘Toca’s Miracle’ by Fragma & ‘Sky’ by Sonique carved a permanent place for dance music in my heart. Vanessa Mae’s ‘Contradanze’ is still one of my favourite classical-crossover tracks to this day and is probably the one that made me want to play the violin in the first place.

KAPA187: How do you prepare for a show, any pre-show rituals?

Caitlin DeVille : Not really. I guess I get quite ‘into the zone’ just before a big performance and probably come across as very pensive but I’m really just switching my brain from thinking about things like ‘did I remember to switch the stove off?’ to being in show mode.

Caitlin has done covers of pop hits from international acts such as ‘2U’ by David Guetta ft Justin Beiber, ‘despacito’ by Luis Fonsi ft daddy yankee ,’Wild thoughts’ by Dj Khled ft Rihanna and many more.

KAPA187: Your cover of ‘Galamukani’ by James Sakala was a huge hit at the recent the Stanbic music festival. Do you plan on covering more Zambian/African music?

Caitlin DeVille : Yes! Definitely. I’ve actually just covered awesome Zambian house producer El Mukuka’s ‘Bottle of Loneliness‘ – both that and my cover of ‘Galamukani’ are receiving lots of international love on my YouTube channel, they’re about to hit 100k views each within their first couple of weeks – which is great to see. I’m covering a track by Adekunle Gold from Nigeria sometime over the next month or so and we’ll see what pops up after that. More than just covering tracks though I’m looking forward to collaborations with El Mukuka, James Sakala and Jay Rox which are all in the pipeline.

KAPA187: Definitely looking forward to your upcoming collaborations. You are mainly known for doing covers, have you worked on some original compositions?

Caitlin DeVille : I do have some original content out there, I actually played a little teaser of my latest original at the festival. Although my previous original work definitely represents the path taken to get me to my current sound and I’m proud of it – it mostly doesn’t work with my live performance style, it was composed for the sake of making music videos really. I’ve mainly focused on covers this year to gain more international exposure and support – people always respond well to music they recognize and love already and that then leads them to give your original content a chance too – but there will be more original content coming out soon for sure.

Caitlin’s YouTube page is one of the most subscribed (over 200 00) and viewed channels in Zambia with over 43 million plays on her videos! The most viewed video on her page is the Rockabye (Clean Bandit ft Sean Paul & Anne-Marie) cover with an astounding 9 million views!

KAPA187: Your videos are simple yet creative and picturesque. How do you come up with the concepts for your videos to keep them fresh?

Caitlin DeVille : I keep an eye out at all times for new locations wherever I am and so does my family. What I wear also plays an important role in making it all come together and keeping it fresh – I’ve worn outfits by Zambian designers in a couple of videos recently and people have gone crazy for them! When we head to a shoot it’s pretty much always just me and whoever is shooting – I try film them mainly when I’m home, which means it’s usually my brother who happens to be a photographer, behind the lens. We’re comfortable being blunt about what works and what doesn’t, he’ll tell me straight if something isn’t right and I’ll tell him off if I don’t like anything – so basically all we try do is choose great locations, have me perform like I would if I had an audience and then hope for the best.

Caitlin – Something Just Like This video shoot

KAPA187: Do you have anything in the pipeline that your fans will be excited about?

Caitlin DeVille : I’ve started working on my first album of originals which will be out next year!

KAPA187: That’s great, cant wait for that one. Apart from music, what else are you involved in?

Caitlin DeVille : Currently my career has me working in overdrive! I have loads of traveling coming up before the end of the year for gigs – I’m actually on a plane on my way to Milan right now! Between gigs and shooting videos and recording for them etc I handle all of my own gig admin and then I do all of my own video editing in between that. So I’m currently either working or sleeping!

KAPA187: What can be done to encourage youths to take up learning to play an instrument?

Caitlin DeVille : It starts with exposure to live musicians, preferably at concerts so I guess more quality live music festivals and events would be a good start. There needs to be that spark, something that just clicks and makes them want to be a musician. A lot of hard work and time goes into learning any instrument of course but with a genuine interest that’s all made a little easier.

KAPA187: Any last words?

Caitlin DeVille : Thanks so much for the interview and checking out my work, looking forward to being on home soil again soon for more shows!

HH thanks Dundumwezi for massive 2016 votes

UPND President Hakainde Hichilema has paid glowing tribute to the people of Dundumwezi constituency of Chief Chikanta chiefdom for the manner in which they overwhelmingly voted for UPND and it’s candidates in the 2016 General elections.

President Hichilema in a speech read on his behalf by Deputy Secretary General Walusiku Lyambela said despite having been unnoticed on the Zambian map before 2016, their manner of voting expressed their unity of purpose resulting into their Constituency becoming a household name in the country.

He said this on the sidelines of the Lwiindi Lwa Chuungu traditional ceremony of Chief Chikanta chiefdom held over the weekend.

He also said he is more humbled with the love and support the people of Chikanta including the chief himself exhibited themselves during his period of incarceration.

Mr. Hichilema thanked the entire chiefdom for remaining violent free despite provocation.

He promised to reciprocate the love and appreciation for the people of Dundumwezi once he forms government, describing them as some of the most hard working and selfless people in the country.

He however expressed concern at the low cost of buying maize as set by the PF government describing it as a mockery to farmers.

Mr. Hichilema further told the crowd which included chief Chikanta and more than 300 village headmen,Ward Councilors and MPs that ceremonies such as the Lwiindi Lwaa Chuungu should be encouraged as they are not only an avenue for interaction but also symbolised thanks giving to God for the harvests of that year.

He said a good harvest leads to reduced poverty levels and food security both at Household and National level.

The UPND leader further urged all traditional leaders to continue playing the Advisory and Parental role in order to preserve national peace and traditional values.

UPND apologies to FIFA over the display of Edgar Lungu banner in Nigerian stadium

79

The opposition UPND has apologised to FIFA and CAF for what it calls unbecoming and embarrassing behaviour of the PF thugs that displayed partisan political banners inside the Nigerian stadium during Saturday’s match between Nigeria and Zambia.

The UPND National Youth Chairperson Likando Kalaluka said the party is fully aware of the FIFA rules and regulations that strictly prohibits display of political and religious banners during the matches.

“At national level, sporting events such as football have always been uniting factors for all citizens that transcends across political and religious lines,” Kalaluka said.

“It is therefore unimaginable that the PF leadership can sponsor their thuggery behaviour abroad and risk the whole nation being sanctioned by FIFA for breaking straightforward rules.”

He said it is such conduct that sometimes makes citizens not supporting even worthwhile causes when they suspect that one grouping intends to gain political mileage out of it.

“If the PF leadership wants, they can register their own team with FIFA and CAF but must leave the Zambian National soccer team to the Zambian people where everyone will be part of it,” he said.

“On behalf of the Zambian people who love soccer, we once more want to ask for leniency from FIFA for such thuggery behaviour of the PF cadres inside the Nigerian stadium.”

Chipolopolo striker Alex N’gonga’s family home in Chimwemwe Township in Kitwe has been attacked by thugs following Zambia’s 1-0 loss to Nigeria in a decisive 2018 World Cup qualifier.

Copperbelt province police commissioner Charity Katanga said a group of people emerged from a white Toyota Land Cruiser ACC 5492 and maliciously damaged two roofing sheets with stones.

Mrs Katanga said the group accused N’gonga of missing scoring chances that crashed Zambia’s hopes of qualifying to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

She said police have launched a manhunt and a case of malicious damage to property has been opened.

And N’gonga’s mother Charity has told Muvi TV news that she feared for her life when she heard another person threaten to destroy the house completely.

Nigeria became the first African team to qualify for the global showpiece courtesy of Alex Iwobi’s second-half strike at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Lusaka Dynamos shock Nkana in Kitwe

Lusaka Dynamos edged Nkana 1-0 in Kitwe on Sunday to move into second place on the FAZ Super Division table.

Striker Chris Mugalu scored the goal as Dynamos completed a double over Nkana whom they defeated 2-1 in the first leg match in June.

Mugalu’s 13 minute goal helped his side to move to 53 points after 30 matches played.

On the other hand, Nkana who were fifth on the table prior to this game are likely to drop down further.

Nkana remain stuck on 49 points.

Losing this Week 30 match played at Nkana Stadium in Wusakile is a major setback to Nkana’s title chase.

Hakainde Hichilema Has Been Overshadowed By Kambwili– Prince Ndoyi

38

Chishimba Kambwili addressing Journalists at his house
FILE: Chishimba Kambwili addressing Journalists at his house
A young and outspoken political activist has observed that UPND is being overshadowed by Chishimba Kambwili in the country’s political arena.

In a statement, Prince Ndoyi who is the former ZANASU Vice President and renown youth activist said the UPND seems to be “dropping gears and momentum each passing day.

He said the opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema seems to have lost energy and enthusiasm as can be noted from the recent press briefing held at their secretariate.

“As a young political activist I would like to make an observation on the current political tempreture in our country. Listening to the most recent press breifing by the UPND and their leader Hakainde Hichilema was greatly worrying. The UPND and HH seems to be dropping gears and momentum each passing day.

“It was saddening to see the lack of energy and enthusiasm in UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema after his press briefing. What seemed as a once brave politician in HH seems to have been reduced by what most Zambians would be left to speculate.

“From an ordinary eye, one may wonder if its the incaceration or the so called dialogue that has deflated HH and his UPND,” he said.

Mr Ndoyi observed that the recent press briefing which was jointly held with ADD president Charles Milupi and People’s Party president Mike Mulongoti was just but a repeatation of what the outspoken expelled PF member has been singing (corruption allegations).

“The entire press briefing with Charles Milupi and Mike Mulongoti was centered around what Chishimba Kambwili has been saying. Much as I see Kambwili as a balooning noise maker and I may not agree with him on a number of issues, unfortunately he has robbed UPND the much needed political capital after the incarceration of their leader HH.”

He added that Mr Hichilema was literally begging Kambwili to join him when it should have been the other way round where Kambwili should be asking the UPND if he can join them.

He said while the UPND are crying over the supposedly stolen elections in the past, Kambwili is talking about the future and issues that resonate well with the average Zambian voter.

“Hakainde Hichilema was literally begging Chishimba Kambwili to join them instead of Kambwili himself begging for Hakainde’s support. While the UPND are crying over the supposedly stolen elections in the past, Kambwili is talking about the future and issues that resonate well with the average Zambian voter.

He has since advised the UPND to consider identifying a new leader.

“The UPND must now focus on finding a new leader because at the pace HH is moving he may never become a President. UPND must consider undergoing top down political reforms or else they may retire into obscurity as an opposition political party,” he said.

Africa’s Economic Emancipation Belongs To The Youths In The Regions-MMD Die Hard

Centre for Young Leaders in Africa CYLA ambassadors on Sunday graduated at Salima’s Senga Bay in Malawi from a Program for Young Politicians in Africa an initiative for young politicians sponsored by the Swidish government through the Green Forum.

The program which started last year with the intial participation of young politicians from political parties in Malawi and Zambia is meant to foster the sharing of ideas and co-existance among young politicians in the region.

And speaking when he gave a vote of thanks during the graduation MMD participant whose also MMD Diehard National Coordinator Gerald Chiluba who spoke on behalf of the political parties from Malawi and Zambia said the power of networking cannot be underestimated.

Mr Chiluba said it is the power of networking by the freedom fighters from various African countries that led to the political independence of the continent something he said should be used if African countries are to gain economic independence.

He explained that the economic slavery faced by African countries cannot be fought in isolation but that countries especially young people need to work together.

He said when young people in the region especially those in politics and business like entreprenuers coexist, coperate and create synergies among themselves, peace and security in the region would be gauranteed and that significant strides will be made towards African economic emancipation.

“We cannot underestimate the power of networking among nations as young people because no single country can exist in isolation and achieve its aspirations, we need to network and appreciate challenges faced by Africa so we wholistically deal with the set backs.

“This day reminds us of the unity and togetherness which existed among our leaders in a quest to attain political independence, now that Africa is independent we need to liberate ourselves from economic slavery as one,” he said.

He added that with this exposure to information, young politicians will participate in the political dispensetion with an informed point of view as well as speak with clarity and conviction about critical matters.

The parties that participated have since formed an organisation called Centre for Young Leaders in Africa (CYLA) which has membership from all political parties in the two countries.

People’s Party, United Democratic Front, Democratic Progressive Party, Alliance for Democracy and Malawi Congress Party participated from Malawi while Zambia had participants from UNIP, MMD, PF, ADD, FDD and NAREP others were UPND, Green Party and Rainbow party.

Intimidation of media houses by the PF government must end immediately-HH

56

Hakainde Hichilema
United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has said that the intimidation of media houses by the PF government must end immediately.

Reacting to reports that the Independent Broadcasting Authority had summoned Prime TV to appear before its licensing committee over alleged abrogation of broadcasting laws, Mr Hichilema advised the IBA to stay away from being used by the PF.adding that the IBA must distance itself from the PF and it’s suffocation of the media by allowing the fourth estate (Media) to operate independently.

Mr Hichilema insisted that media houses must be allowed to operate freely as part of the democratic process that ensures checks and balances in any country.

“In the instance of summoning Prime TV owners, we have no doubt the reasons that have led to such, and as UPND, we shall issue our findings and demand for answers on certain revelations that have been made recently. But the intimidation of media houses and whistle-blowers must come to an end immediately,” read the statement.

The UPND Leader urged the IBA, established to be an independent institution, not to fall prey to being used as a tool of intimidation and corruption in the country.

According to the summon dated October 06, 2017, IBA Director General Josephine Mapoma asked Shawa to present himself before the licensing and compliance committee at the IBA offices for abrogating the conditions of section 29 (2) of the IBA Act.

“Section 29 (2) of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) provides, ‘where a broadcasting lisence does not comply with this Act or with the conditions of the broadcasting license, the Authority shall notify the broadcasting licensee of the measures that the broadcasting licensee should undertake, within a specified period, to comply with the conditions of this Act or broadcasting license,” stated Mapoma.

“In view of the above provision, you are hereby summoned to appear before the licensing and compliance committee of the board on Monday, 9th October, 2017at 10:30 hours in the IBA boardroom for non compliance in your broadcasting.”

It is alleged that Prime TV aired a story quoting a source who claimed that Information Minister Kampamba Mulenga paid him K21,000 in order to steal 12,996 votes from UPND president Hakainde Hichilema.

The said source claimed that he also worked with lawyer KBF and former president Rupiah Banda to rig the 2016 elections and further challenged them to sue him if they thought he was lying.

LCC urges councils to digitally map graves

Lusaka Mayor His Worship Wilson Kalumba

Lusaka Mayor Wilson Kalumba has called on local authorities across the country to consider implementing digital mapping of graves for easier identification and management

Mayor Kalumba said the capital city has embarked on implementing a digital cemetery information management system.
ZANIS reports that Mr. Kalumba said the project should not be restricted to Lusaka but rolled out to other cities and towns to improve grave identification and management.

He observed that the current use of metal placards is problematic as the sign posts at times get washed away by the rains or get covered with grass.

“If you have buried your relatives at any graveyard in Lusaka, go there today you will not be able to identify their grave and one can end up putting a tombstone on a wrong grave,” said Mr. Kalumba

Mayor Kalumba said the Lusaka City Council (LCC) has already advertised for an expression of Interest to map individual graveyards and the creation of a cemetery information management system (C.I.M.S).

Mr Kalumba stated that the project whose cost is yet to be finalized will be funded by the LCC once a supplier is identified and awarded the contract.

Zambia happy with Africa’s 9 trillion dollars expenditure towards infrastructure development

Zambian High Commissioner to South Africa Emmanuel Mwamba speaking whilst flanked by his counterpart a South African High Commissioner to Zambia Ms. Sikose Mji during the South Africa Trade and Investment Mission to Zambia Meeting at Cresta Golf View Hote
Zambia has expressed happiness with Africa’s annual expenditure of nine trillion dollars towards infrastructure development

Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa Mr. Emmanuel Mwamba says Africa’s investment in infrastructure will significantly impact positively on realizing its potential.

Mr. Mwamba was speaking at the Roundtable discussion on Economic Diplomacy held at the Standard Bank in Rosebank, Johannesburg, South Africa attended by several dignitaries and Chief Executive Officers from different private and public-sector.

He said Zambia was happy with Africa’s positive economic outlook despite negative international media reports concerning the continent.

He urged African countries to improve on the negative dominating narrative about Africa as a place of famine, diseases and war.

He said African countries were posting the fastest economic growth in the world and the positive activities in the continent needed to be highlighted aggressively.

Mr. Mwamba encouraged the countries to continue investing in infrastructure development to unlock Africa’s potential in agriculture, Tourism, Commerce and Entrepreneurship

He further encouraged African countries to increase intra trade as the continent had the best business prospects.

He said another key growth point was the huge presence of young people and the demographic dividends can be obtained by investing in education, entrepreneurship, skills development and SMEs.

He cited an example where South Africa imports Soya Cake worth R1 billion from Latin America while Zambia had excess capacity and quantities.

And Standard Bank of South Africa has described Zambia as a key economy in Africa.

The Bank says Zambia was a powerful lever for the growth, peace and prosperity of the continent.

Stanbic Chief Executive Officer for Africa said at the Roundtable discussion on Economic Diplomacy under the theme: Making it easier to do business in Africa.

Kampamba Mulenga says Government will start clamping down on Fake News authors

MINISTER of Information and Broadcasting Services Kampamba Mulenga
MINISTER of Information and Broadcasting Services Kampamba Mulenga

Chief Government Spokesperson Kampamba Mulenga has said that Government is aware of a scheme by some unscrupulous people to dent her image as Chief Government spokesperson through fabrications on social media.

In a statement released to the media yesterday Ms Mulenga said that government is currently looking at enforcing laws against cybercrime, including online falsehoods.

The Chief Government Spokesperson said that this scheme of fabricating stories and publishing them online with a seal of the Chief Government Spokesperson is meant to pit citizens against the Patriotic Front leadership so that citizens could rise against Government.

The Chief Government Spokesperson has also warned individuals who are writing falsehood stories on social media that it is just as criminal online as it is in hard copy to write and publish falsehoods purported to have been authored by another individual.

Ms Kampamba’s statement comes after a fake online article headlined; ‘Minister Supports arresting of men who dump women after a year of dating’.

Below is the full statement

Republic of Zambia
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND BROADCASTING SERVICES AND CHIEF GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON, HON. KAMPAMBA MULENGA

Government would like to distance itself from a fabrication online headlined; ‘MINISTER SUPPORTS ARRESTING OF MEN WHO DUMP WOMEN AFTER A YEAR OF DATING’.

Government is aware of a scheme by some unscrupulous people to dent my image as Chief Government spokesperson through fabrications on social media.

This scheme of fabricating stories and publishing them online with a seal of the Chief Government Spokesperson is meant to pit citizens against the Patriotic Front leadership so that citizens could rise against Government.

Recently, there has been a flurry of falsehoods on social media where my name has been used either saying things meant to annoy citizens or having been involved in some malpractices all meant to scandalise my person as well as Government.

Government is currently looking at enforcing laws against cybercrime, including online falsehoods, and would like to warn individuals who have taken to such vices that it is just as criminal online as it is in hard copy to write and publish falsehoods purported to have been authored by another individual.

On the story in question, I would like to categorically state that I did not have any interview with Muvi TV as claimed by the author of the said fabrication. Muvi TV, themselves, can attest to the fact that no such interview took place.

Government has no intentions of coming up with the said law because Government does not introduce laws that intrude into people’s private lives neither does it craft laws aimed at targeting individuals as that is against citizen’s rights in a democracy.

Government supports citizen journalism which has come about because of technological advancements but does not support publication of falsehoods, especially meant to alarm and infuriate citizens.

Government would like to urge citizens not to believe such online publications at face value, and would also like to urge professional media not to fall prey to such criminal acts being purveyed online.

Today’s Message:When All is Said and Done

5

Today’s Scripture

“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”
(Hebrews 9:27, NKJV)

When All is Said and Done

So many people live life worried about what everyone else thinks and wondering how they can impress other people. But we have to realize that when we come to the end of life, we’re not going to stand before people to give an account of our lives, we are going to stand before Almighty God. He is not going to say, “Why didn’t you do what so-and-so said to do? Why didn’t you fit into their mold? Why didn’t you take their opinion?” No, He is going to ask, “Did you become who I created you to be? Did you stay true to what I put in your heart?”

This is where Saul missed it. Saul had a big destiny. God had great things in his future, but Saul was so insecure that he let people squeeze him into their mold. He was afraid he was going to disappoint somebody. He said in First Samuel 15:24, “I disobeyed the Lord’s instructions because I was afraid of the people, so I did what they asked.” Notice Saul knew what to do. He even admitted it, “I disobeyed God’s instructions.” Why? He was a people pleaser. He forfeited his destiny in order to please people. Friend, don’t let that be you! Don’t be a people pleaser, be a God pleaser because pleasing God is all that matters when all is said and done!

A Prayer for Today

“Father God, today I set my heart and mind on pleasing You. Help me to break away from the snare of people pleasing. Help me to stand strong against criticism and learn to walk in love always. Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to You always in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
