The Sondashi Formula drug is safe and tolerable to people-preliminary report

30

Sondashi
LUDWIG Sondashi, founder of the herbal HIV/AIDS medicine, the Sondashi Formula 2000 (SF2000), has released a preliminary report indicating that the first phase of the clinical trial has proven that the drug is safe and tolerable to people.

Dr Sondashi said the trial was undertaken by three people who took three different regimes of the medication.

He said a report was now out which showed that the SF2000 was safe.

“The report is important as it outlines the safety and tolerability parameters measured to conclude the safety of SF2000 in humans while the production of spray dry capsules offers the convenience of taking the SF2000 treatment,” the summary of the results read in part.

The summary report recommended that blood drug levels to determine if there was any absorption of the SF2000 should be done while the phase two of a clinical trial should be implemented soon.

It said the resource mobilisation for phase two clinical trials should immediately commence.

The summary report was released yesterday at Lusaka’s trial one dissemination meeting.

In a speech read for him by his son Innocent Sondashi, Dr Sondashi said he was sad with the slow pace at which the clinical trial and development was taking place.

Dr Sondashi said it was important that the trials were concluded immediately because the solution was an answer to many poor people that continued to struggle with HIV and AIDS.

He appealed to the Government not to relent in supporting the programme as phase two of the clinical trials which would test the efficacy of the medication commenced.

Dr Sondashi said the Government had shown financial commitment so far and he was hopeful that they would continue to fund the trials despite having many constraints.

Ministry of Mines to investigate the illegal acquisition of mining licences

Ministry of Mines PS Paul Chanda
THE Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development has launched investigations into the illegal acquisition of mining licences by some business entities on the Copperbelt.

Mines and Mineral Development Permanent Secretary Paul Chanda said yesterday an inquiry would also be undertaken into the existence of ‘illegal’ mineral smelters in the mining region and surrounding areas.

“Definitely we’ll move in to do some verification in respect to the illegal smelting and other mining activities on the Copperbelt and all illegitimate premises will be shut down without hesitation,” Mr Chanda warned.

He was reacting to recent incidents of violence involving groups known as ‘Jerabos’, mostly unemployed young men who have invaded mining companies like Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) for copper materials that they sell to makeshift smelting operators located in townships.

These are said to be business entities in possession of government-approved mining licences despite not owning quarrying businesses.

Two jerabos have been killed in the last week in confrontations with police assigned to protect the assets of KCM in Chingola, the latest death happening two days ago when a band said to number around 50, some armed with machetes was confronted by armed police inside the Nchanga Mine premises

Zambia is not experiencing political tension-Frank Bwalya

Frank Bwalya
Frank Bwalya
PATRIOTIC Front (PF) deputy spokesperson Frank Bwalya has advised United Party for National Development (UPND) members to reflect on what they refer to as political tension because the country is not experiencing tension.

Mr Bwalya said the UPND should not even blame the purported tension on the PF, because it was that party’s leadership that did not want peace going by the way they kept disrespecting President Edgar Lungu.

He said the UPND should stop making statements aimed at shifting the blame over the arrest and subsequent court hearing involving the opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr Bwalya said the PF was not the Judiciary or the police to arrest or try any person.

“Not even the President makes decisions for the courts. I urge UPND party members to stop accusing the PF party of being behind the arrest of their president,” he said.

Mr Bwalya said this during the ‘Let the people talk’ programme on Radio Phoenix yesterday.

He said it was unfortunate that the UPND kept on making statements that gave the impression to the international community that the country was under political tension.

Mr Bwalya said if the UPND members genuinely felt that there was tension in Zambia, they should discuss it among themselves and find the real cause of the tension.

He said that UPND members should humble themselves, dialogue and accept that President Lungu was the Head of State until the next elections when Zambians would have another opportunity to elect a leader.

SIGORA International, a U.S. based technology development company,is set to electrify about 215 rural households in Kaanja area of Sioma district in Western Province using solar energy. This was revealed in an interview with Sioma district commissioner Morris Litula

Sigora Zambia will manage the pilot project which will be deployed in Sioma district. It will power 200 homes (electrifying a total of 1,200 people) and 15 businesses with 24/7 refrigeration and water pumping capable electricity. The project will include the electrification of the Kaanja Health Clinic, Veterinary Offices, and the Kaanja Primary School.

The solar array for the pilot site will be constructed on a raised platform that will provide a shaded public area for community activities, such as a market.
The start of construction date is not set, as Sigora Zambia is awaiting the necessary approvals from the GoZ. As soon as these are received the project will begin.
Mr. Litula said the project was made possible by Vice-President Inonge Wina.

“The pilot project was initially supposed to start in Chibombo in Central Province but we would like to thank the Vice -President Mrs Wina for having considered Sioma for the start,” he said.

Mr Litula thanked the traditional leadership in the area for offering land where the solar panel source will be set up.

Meanwhile, Mr Litula said a College of Agriculture, which is being constructed with support from the World Bank, will be completed in November this year.

Mr Litula said the college will offer courses in livestock and fisheries.

“The college, which is being constructed by Best Ways Enterprises, will impact positively on the youth, considering the number of pupils that have completed school around Sioma,” he said.

And Mr Litula said two consortium licences have been given out to two firms dealing in timber.

Mr Litula said the district has put in place stern measures and is on high alert to stop illegal trading in timber.

He said Sioma last month confiscated hundreds of timber with culprits facing charges in the courts of law.

Livingstone Acting District Commissioner James Zimba has challenged youths to go into entrepreneurship instead of idling.

Mr. Zimba says youths should desist from citing high unemployment levels in the country as a challenge but instead focus on contributing to the country’s growth through self-employment.

He said by engaging in entrepreneurship most of the youths would become key players in the national economy and eventual national growth.

He said the country would only develop and sustain its growth if youths in the county stopped using excuses such high unemployment levels and disability to remain idle.

ZANIS reports that the Acting District Commissioner said this at the burial of 77 year old Newspaper Vendor Daniel Mundungani at Nakatindi Graveyard iin Livingstone.

The late Mr. Mundungani was born deaf and had speech impairment.

The Acting District Commissioner noted that despite his disability and being uneducated, Mr. Mundungani was entrepreneurial in nature with good communication and mathematical skills.

Mr. Zimba said Mr. Mundungani who was the longest serving newspaper vendor in Livingstone had proved that disability was not a barrier.

“Mr. Mundungani has taught us a lesson. You cannot be a beggar due to a disability; find something to do and develop the economy using local resources,” he said.

Speaking earlier, Times of Zambia Bureau Chief for the South-West Region Brian Hatyoka urged the mourners to emulate Mr. Mundungani and his spirit of hard work which could not be suppressed by his limited abilities.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mundungani’s nephew Msusa Matengu said the family was grateful for the support rendered by government, the private sector and the Livingstone City Council to give the deceased a dignified burial.

Mr. Mundungani sold newspapers on behalf of Times of Zambia, Zambia Daily Mail, The Mast and Daily Nation.

He died of Acute Heart Failure and Chronic Kidney failure on 27 May 2017 at the Livingstone Central Hospital.

FINANCE MINISTER FELIX MUTATI has directed the PENSIONS AND INSURANCE AUTHORITY to appoint an independent auditor to assess the financial and operational governance of SATURNA REGNA; a Pension Fund which operates in Zambia.

In a letter addressed to Pensions and Insurance Authority Registrar MARTIN LIBINGA, Mr. MUTATI said that the audit should be undertaken and completed within thirty days.

“I am directing you to appoint an independent auditor to assess the matter that has arisen in the SATURNA REGNA PENSION FUND,” stated the Minister, adding that, “the audit should be undertaken and completed within thirty days.”

And ILLOVO SUGAR Proprietary Managing Director GAVIN DALGLEISH has said his firm “believes in Zambia and will continue to expand the business here with the sole purpose of producing the best quality products in Africa.”

Speaking yesterday morning during an investment brainstorming meeting with Finance Minister FELIX MUTATI, Mr. DALGLEISH, who was backed by Zambia Sugar Managing Director REGINA KATOWA, said “the economic management consultative approach which the Zambian Government has adopted is a sign of government’s commitment to the prosperity of industry.”

At the same function, Mr. MUTATI said, “the private sector in Zambia must show tenacity by seizing the opportunities which the government is creating for all levels of industry in order to grow the economy.”

“This can be done by not only establishing market penetration strategies in order for you to grow and consolidate your competitiveness but also taking steps to share your positive experiences such as the stabilisation of the macro-economic environment which we have been working on under the economic stabilisation and growth programme,” stated the MINISTER to Mr. DALGLEISH and his team from ILLOVO SUGAR GROUP.

“We are in the process of creating a framework that monitors potential risks to investment,” stated Mr. MUTATI, adding that, “the system will have the capability to activate De-risking measures in order to guard economic stability, promote growth, and strengthen our international competitiveness.”

“I also take this opportunity to commend VAT collection agents such as Zambia Sugar for helping the government to make progress in improving the first quarter performance domestic resource mobilization. We look forward to greater performance in the second quarter,” said Mr. MUTATI.

Chingaipe warns police against corruptio

Police and Prisons Service Commission Chairperson Peter Chingaipe has warned of taking stern action against corrupt practices.
Mr. Chingaipe warned that any officer involved in corrupt activities would face severe disciplinary action in line with government’s policy on zero tolerance on corruption.
He,however, said the Commission would continue sensitization police, immigration, and correctional service officers on the dangers of corruption and its detrimental effect on the country’s growth.
Mr. Chingaipe said this on Tuesday when he paid a courtesy call on Livingstone Acting District Commissioner James Zimba at his office.
He further advised officers to desist from engaging in partisan politics.
“We advise officers to desist from engaging in partisan politics and to be loyal to the government of the day. Those who want to be politicians should resign,” he said.
Mr. Chingaipe called on the officers to continue maintaining law and order to sustain the peace and security that the country enjoys.

The Police service in the country is dogged with various operational challenges such as lack of transport among others to investigate crime activities such that they are alleged to ask for help commonly known as nicekeleko from complainants for them to carry out their duties, a thing that has dented their image.
Meanwhile, Mr. Chingaipe explained that the Commission was on a tour of Southern Province to familiarize itself with the environment and conditions under which Police, Correctional Services and Immigration operate.
He said the Commission would also use the opportunity to learn more about the challenges being experienced by officers in the three departments.

He added that these included inadequate accommodation, shortage of water in camps, and inadequate transport among others.
Mr. Chingaipe said all the challenges would be captured and a report would be presented to higher authorities and stake holders for them to be addressed.
And speaking earlier, Livingstone Acting District Commissioner James Zimba said as the tourist capital of the nation, Livingstone received over 400 local and foreign tourists per day but the Police and Immigration Department were equal to the task and managed to handle the huge numbers while maintaining peace and order.

Lusaka High Court has acquitted Aaron Chungu and Faustin Kabwe

Mr Aaron Chungu

The Lusaka High Court has acquitted Directors of the defunct Access Financial Services Aaron Chungu and Faustin Kabwe of the offence of being in possession of property reasonably suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

The court has upheld Mr Kabwe and Chungu’s appeal and set aside the Magistrate judgment which convicted the duo.

In a judgment by a panel of Judges Banda -Bobo, Betty Mungomba and Mwila Chitabo, State Counsel, the court has deemed the convictions of the two under counts 11 and 12 unsafe and set them at liberty forthwith.

The court found that there was no basis upon which the trial Magistrate could have convicted the appellants for the offence of being in possession of property reasonably suspected of having been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

The judges found that the only misdirection from the evidence is failure by the trial magistrate to consider the explanation given by the appellants in the defence.

They ruled that the trial magistrate would have inevitably come to the conclusion that the explanation given was a reasonable explanation if he had taken into account the duo’s submissions.

Citing the authority of Maseka versus the People and Kalonga versus the people, the judges found that the explanation by the appellants satisfied the criteria of the being reasonably possible or could reasonably have been true.

The court has granted leave to appeal to the Court of Appeal.

This is an appeal case from the Magistrate court against both the conviction and sentence of Mr Kabwe and Mr Chungu to a term of three years with hard labour.

SACCORD commence public meetings to protect ICC consultation outcome

Given Lubinda
Following the announcement by the Justice Minister Given Lubinda that Zambians had elected to remain part of the International Criminal Court, SACCORD and some selected partners last week commenced a series of public fora aimed at protecting the decision of citizens.

The meetings which started on Thursday last week are being supported by the World Federalist Movement (WFM) through the Coalition on the International Criminal Court (CICC).

The first Public Forum which was held at Protea Hotels in Lusaka featured the Executive Directors of Operation Young Vote (OYV) Guess Nyirenda and Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia Austin Kayanda who represented his director Hellen Mwale.

The discussions centered around the recent results released by the Ministry of Justice indicating that over 90% of Zambians prefer to remain in the ICC.

The discussions concluded that CSOs need to continue being pro-active in protecting the peoples decision as the final validated report is taken to cabinet and Parliament respectively.

They feather agreed that the media was critical in any democracy and that all Zambians must create an enabling media environment that will allow them to cover important matters such as those related to the ICC.

Recently Justice Minister Given Lubinda announced that Zambians through a consultative process which was conducted in 30 Districts across the country had chosen to remain or be part of the International Criminal Court.

African Heads Of State’s last seating were met with a contentous resolution of leaving the ICC to which most African Union members are part of. This was arrived as a resolution in part to the establishment of an African friendly court to deal with African matters.
