Support systems within these institutions are equally critical, often involving mentorship from former players who have transitioned successfully into post-football careers. This guidance helps budding athletes navigate the pressures of professional sports while maintaining a balanced approach to life. The combination of training and life skills education equips players with tools necessary for success both on and off the field.

The importance of these academies extends beyond individual player development; they contribute significantly to community upliftment by promoting education and discipline among youth. Zambia Receives Advanced Copperbelt Survey as Copper Output Rises by 12% in 2024

16

First Quantum Minerals Ltd., led by Chief Executive Tristan Pascall, has delivered the 2024 Copperbelt High-Resolution Airborne Survey to Zambia’s Ministry of Mines. The initiative, heralded by President Hakainde Hichilema, marks a significant step in enhancing the country’s understanding of its vast subsurface resources.

“This critical mapping initiative provides a deeper understanding of Zambia’s resource endowment, benefitting not only the Ministry of Mines but the Zambian people as a whole,” President Hichilema said in a statement. He expressed gratitude to First Quantum Minerals for their leadership and collaboration on this project, which underscores Zambia’s commitment to leveraging its mineral wealth for economic development.

The handover of the survey coincides with encouraging news from the mining sector. Zambia’s copper output rose by 12% in 2024, reaching 820,670 metric tons compared to 732,580 tons in 2023. Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe attributed the increase to a recovery in production at key mines despite electricity shortages caused by a drought that impacted hydroelectric power generation.

The uptick in output reflects optimism in the sector, which the government has identified as a cornerstone of its economic growth strategy. Zambia, Africa’s second-largest copper producer after the Democratic Republic of Congo, aims to triple annual copper production to 3 million tons within the next decade.

Production gains were recorded at Mopani Copper Mines, now under the ownership of United Arab Emirates-based International Resources Holding, and other mines operated by industry heavyweights. Canadian firms Barrick Gold and First Quantum Minerals are scaling up production at their operations, while Vedanta Resources, backed by Indian billionaire Anil Agarwal, has committed $1.3 billion to revive Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).

Additionally, KoBold Metals, a U.S.-backed mining firm, has announced plans to invest $2 billion in developing a new copper mine in Zambia. The country’s mining resurgence, coupled with advancements like the Copperbelt High-Resolution Airborne Survey, signals a renewed drive to harness its natural resources while bolstering investor confidence.

As Zambia advances toward its ambitious production targets, the government remains focused on creating a sustainable, transparent, and investor-friendly mining industry that benefits its citizens and economy alike.

President Hichilema Terminates Appointment of Deputy Inspector General of Police

33

President Hakainde Hichilema has, with immediate effect, terminated the appointment of Milner Muyambango as Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations.

The decision, made in accordance with Article 270 of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia, was announced through a statement issued by State House Chief Communications Specialist, Clayson Hamasaka.

In the statement, President Hichilema expressed his gratitude to Mr. Muyambango for his service to the government and extended his best wishes for his future endeavors.

The President emphasized the critical role of public officers in upholding the law, respecting the rule of law, and remaining accountable to the citizens they serve.

This decision comes as part of the President’s commitment to ensuring that the Zambia Police Service operates in line with constitutional principles and maintains public trust.

INDO Zambia Bank to fund prospective home owners in The Hills property development

1

INDO Zambia Bank (IZB) has lived up to its mantra of ‘Supporting you, Developing Zambia’ by entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Hills, an upmarket real estate firm for the phased development of commercial, retail and mixed use real estates in the Palabana area of Chongwe District.

The MoU, a game-changer, is changing the face of Leopards Hill Road on the outskirts of Lusaka with aesthetically appealing structures and bringing to the table best practices of the industry.According to the MoU signed in Lusaka on Monday 20th January 2025, IZB will provide seamless real estate financing solutions.

“This partnership allows eligible customers of IZB to access financing for both land intended for property construction and completed properties, and our customers can initiate the purchase process through the bank’s branches and The Hills sales and marketing outlets,” IZB Managing Director Brajesh Kumar Singh said.

And Mwelwa Chibesakunda, Chairperson of The Hills described the signing of the MoU as “a significant milestone in the development of The Hills as it gives our clients and the general public including Zambians in the diaspora exclusive access to mortgages and construction loans at affordable interest rates and favourable tenures that allow existing and potential homeowners to invest in their homes and secure their futures.”

Mr Chibesakunda said the partnership with IZB paves the way for The Hills to work with other companies that operate in construction, manufacturing, property development and other sectors which will enable the Hill to play its role towards the national aspirations in order to build a better and stronger Zambia.

“We are extremely pleased with the partnership that we have forged with Indo Zambia Bank as it will enable IZB and The Hills to achieve their visions of investing in sustainable and inclusive communities while providing key services and amenities such as roads, water and sewerage, electricity, healthcare and education all within one development,” he said.
Mr Chibesakunda said the partnership also bears significant impact on the country’s housing needs as it will create in excess of 1,500 new homes which will materially contribute to reducing the current housing deficit in Lusaka particularly. And Mr Singh said as part of the efforts to support home ownership and empowerment of the citizenry, IZB has revamped its Indo Home Loan facility in response to specific needs of a cross section of society.

Among the key improvements to the home ownership scheme include a longer repayment tenure of up to 300 months, low interest rates tailored to meet the needs of salaried individuals, self-employed business people and families.Mr Singh says the Home Loan facility covers various purposes, including purchasing readymade houses, acquiring plots and constructing property, construction on existing plots within 18 months, home improvements, including repairs, renovations and extensions as well as refinancing on revised terms.“Additionally, customers can apply for an Indo Top Up loan, specifically designed for the takeover of their existing home loans. This facility can also be extended to existing IZB home loan borrowers,” he said.

Reacting to the MoU, Lusaka resident Mike Ng’uni said the greatest significance is the growth of real estate lending portfolios in the Zambian financial landscape.

“This should help refine financial products along the peculiar requirements of the sector, away from those in the general lending pool. Banks, by their pole position of having access to cheaper money through deposit taking, could help lower the cost of real estate financing, thereby increasing financial access to more developers. Hopefully, it shall also help build a cadre of banking professionals with deeper skills set of the real estate sector and help tailor appropriate products,” Mr Ng’uni said.

He said the sprouting of housing estates is helping in structured developments, which local authorities have failed to implement and enforces development of aesthetically appealing structures and brings to the table best practices of the industry," he said.

A business executive Cephas Chabu hailed the MoU as a synergy bringing together finance and technical services to accelerate the roll-out of home mortgages at a faster rate and help bring down home deficit in Zambia.

“Most home loan institutions have the liquidity but lack uptake due to challenges such as costs of architectural drawings, valuations etc. So this partnership will bring everything under one roof hence increasing home loan uptake and home stock,” Mr Chabu said.

ZNS Mealie Meal Not For Resale –Ndola DC

Ndola District Commissioner Joseph Phiri has warned citizens against abusing the Zambia National Service (ZNS) manufactured mealie meal being sold in various outlets at K230 per 25kg bag.

Mr. Phiri said he is aware that some people are repacking ZNS mealie meal for the purpose of smuggling and others are buying in bulk and reselling at exorbitant prices.

Mr. Phiri said the Government has empowered ZNS to produce mealie meal in order to help stabilise the prices of the staple commodity.

“I want to ask ZNS in Ndola to impound a mealie meal found in bulk. We will visit people repackaging ZNS mealie meal in sacks of other brands. This mealie meal is for Zambians,” he said.

“President Hakainde Hichilema introduced ZNS mealie meal in order to cushion prices on the market. ZNS mealie meal is not for resale. Why should an individual buy a ZNS mealie meal daily? People are not being sincere,” Mr. Phiri said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Phiri has announced the opening of a ZNS mealie meal outlet in Ndola’s Nkwazi Compound.

World Bank Grants Zambia $292 Million for Zambia–Tanzania Interconnector Project

12

The World Bank has approved a new grant of $292 million to the Zambian government to fund the Zambia–Tanzania Interconnector Project (ZTIP), aimed at enhancing sustainable and affordable energy access.

The financing package, announced through a statement to ZNBC News, will bolster Zambia’s energy sector by increasing power transmission capacity between Zambia and Tanzania, fostering integration between East and Southern Africa’s power networks.

According to World Bank Country Manager for Zambia, Achim Fock, the Zambian power sector is facing significant financial challenges that have hindered the country’s economic growth. He emphasized that the ZTIP initiative complements both regional and national efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability of the energy sector while promoting universal electricity access.

“This partnership will help Zambia address critical issues in its power sector while creating a platform for more sustainable and affordable energy solutions,” Mr. Fock said.

Yadviga Semikolenova, the World Bank’s Energy Practice Manager for Eastern and Southern Africa, highlighted the project’s role in strengthening Zambia’s resilience to climate shocks. She noted that the initiative would reinforce the country’s transmission system to support new renewable energy projects and enable broader electricity access.

Of the total grant, $245 million is being provided by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA), $17 million by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, and $30 million by the European Union.

The Zambia–Tanzania Interconnector Project marks a significant step forward in addressing Zambia’s energy challenges while aligning with broader goals of regional energy integration and climate resilience.

LAZ Commends DPP’s Stance Against Politically Motivated Prosecutions and Welcomes UN Rapporteur’s Visit to Zambia

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has keenly followed the developments surrounding the cases of Mumbi Phiri, Jean Chisenga Ng’andwe, Peter Chanda and Celestine Mukandila, who were arrested for purported offences committed during the campaigns in the recently held Kawambwa by-elections. Of noteworthy, is the position taken by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Gilbert Phiri SC, not to recommend prosecution of the aforementioned opposition political players in light of the absence of credible evidence against them thus the prosecution is not in be public interest.

LAZ finds the conduct of the Director of Public Prosecutions commendable as it goes a long way in ensuring that the practice of using criminal prosecutions to settle political scores or silence those critical of Government is nipped in the bud. For a long time, the Zambia Police has been used by successive Governments as a weapon to silence those critical of the President or the Government. We find the political weaponization of the Police Service regrettable in light of its potential to infringe on the freedoms of citizens guaranteed under the Constitution.

The stance taken by the Director of Public Prosecutions is important in ensuring that criminal prosecutions are not abused for political reasons. We urge the Police and all other law enforcement agencies to emulate the DPP and ensure that they do not fall in the temptation of abusing criminal law to settle political scores. As Zambians, we are all one people bound by our common interest under the motto of One Zambia, One Nation, therefore our practices must promote human dignity, equity, social justice and equality as espoused by Article 8 of the Constitution, so that we can devote much time to collectively finding solutions to the challenges afflicting us as a nation, not settling political battles.

Meanwhile, LAZ welcomes the United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, Irene Khan, who is conducting a country visit to Zambia from 20 to 31 January 2025. The UN Special Rapporteur’s visit at the invitation of Government, gives the country a chance to reaffirm its commitment to upholding human rights in general and in particular, the right to freedom of opinion and expression, as well as an opportunity to re-assess the legal and policy framework and the safety of journalists, human rights defenders and civil society actors in the country.

The press release on a matter of national interest, in defense of rights and freedoms of citizens has been issued in furtherance of LAZ’s mandate under Section 4 of the Law Association of Zambia Act No 31 of the Laws of Zambia.

Trump’s AI initiative is a wake-up call for investors

1

Donald Trump’s announcement of a $100 billion artificial intelligence investment venture, with industry leaders such as SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Oracle’s Larry Ellison at the helm, confirms two key truths: dismissing AI as yesterday’s story is a mistake, and every investor must ensure they have exposure to AI.

Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, one of the world’s largest independent financial advisory and asset management organizations, comments: “Many analysts argue the AI rally is going to dampen this year, but this news reaffirms that we’re merely in a recalibration phase, not a revolution in market leadership.

“AI is not a fleeting trend—it’s the foundation of the future. Investors who fail to recognize this risk missing out on one of the most transformative opportunities of our time.”

The venture, which aims to grow to $500 billion, focuses on advancing AI infrastructure such as data centers and physical campuses while accelerating real-world applications in sectors like healthcare and energy.

Although companies like Microsoft and Nvidia are not officially backing the initiative, they are expected to play significant roles in the broader ecosystem of AI-driven growth.

“Trump’s promise to fast-track these projects using emergency declarations and executive orders further highlights the urgency and scale of this economic shift,” notes Nigel Green.

In 2023 and 2024, the so-called “Magnificent Seven” tech giants—including Nvidia and Microsoft—drove entire indexes to record highs.

These companies were responsible for a significant share of the S&P 500’s gains, making AI the defining story of the market. However, this dominance has led some to speculate that AI’s influence may be peaking.

deVere Group disagrees. “The recalibration seen in AI stocks is not a sign of decline—it’s a natural evolution after explosive growth. Leaders in the sector, such as Nvidia and Microsoft, remain at the cutting edge of innovation, driving advancements in computing, software, and AI infrastructure.

“Investors shouldn’t mistake short-term market adjustments for the end of AI’s dominance,” says the deVere CEO.

“The trajectory for AI remains firmly upward as its applications continue to grow and expand across industries. This isn’t the time to lose confidence.”

Artificial intelligence is no longer confined to technology sectors; it is transforming healthcare, logistics, energy, and financial services. “It’s become a critical driver of productivity and efficiency, making it a foundational component of the global economy.”

deVere Group highlights that investors who move early in transformative economic shifts reap the most significant rewards. The compounding opportunities in AI are vast, and those who position themselves strategically now stand to benefit from the next wave of growth.

Green continues: “AI is not a speculative play, it’s a structural shift in how industries operate. From equities tied to leading AI companies to diversified technology funds, there are clear pathways for investors to capitalize on this revolution. Companies like Nvidia and Microsoft remain pivotal players, particularly as their contributions to AI ecosystems grow.”

Nigel Green concludes: “Analysts who dismiss AI as yesterday’s story are missing the bigger picture.

“Trump’s AI initiative is a wake-up call to the immense and ongoing potential of artificial intelligence.

“The time to build exposure to the defining economic shift of our era is today.”

What incomprehensible reasons are inciting the GRZ to act against ZCCM-IH interests?

4

After contributing, among other things, to resolving the situation at Mopani and KCM, ZCCM-IH Chief Legal Officer Lombe Mbalashi and Chief Investments Officer Brian Musonda have been fired without any explanation.

These new dismissals follow a series of dismissals and resignations within ZCCM-IH:

After the ousting of former Chief Legal Officer Councel Yadika Mkandawire, who had done afantastic job during the hard negociations with First Quantum Minerals and Vedanta, the unexpected and unexplained resignation of former Chairperson Dolika Banda and then the dismissal of Director Moses Nyrienda, why fire two competent members of Management again?

The GRZ should be aware that it is imperative to have competent people who know the Company inside out in order to meet current and future challenges.

What is more, a dismissal without any real reason is totally illegal. What compelling reason could have led the GRZ to break the law? Did Messrs Mbalashi and Musonda oppose injunctions that were contrary to the interests of the Company and therefore of the Zambian people, and was their dismissal in retaliation?

Are bigwigs planning to put shady cronies in their place? The absence of any explanation raises a host of questions… but one thing is certain: this incomprehensible action of the GRZ is detrimental to ZCCM-IH one more time and therefore the interests of the Zambian people, at a time when Zambia’s leaders praise their so-called sovereign mining ambitions for the country…

Welcome to Zambia; land of prophecies & miracles!

7

A while ago, the nation obviously woke up to the gruesome and ghastly news of the discovery of the remains of a man safely tacked in his matrimonial bed in Lusaka’s Luangwa Township! The skeleton belongs to George Kalaba who was married to a so-called prophetess with whom he had three children – all of them girls. She allegedly kept the body in the house for some good two years before some inquisitive relatives to the deceased smelt a rat and begun probing.

The woman who has since been detained along with her children has told the police she was actually using the remains of her husband for spiritual miracles. The nation is still reeling from the shock of this macabre finding; everyone is now talking about the same…..in the markets, pubs, buses, offices and even in hallowed places! How did the kids keep the secret for that long? What about the overpowering stench of the decomposing corpse, how did they endure it? What about the maggots, were they cleaning them up daily? And the bodily fluids, is this what she was using as anointing oil to perform miracles? What happened to the flesh of the deceased; did she consume it or prescribe it to her gullible followers who were daily beating bush-paths to her abode in their droves to receive miracles or healings?

Simply put, Zambia is indeed a land of miracles and great prophecies! Isn’t this the reason we are called a Christian nation?

It’s only in this country that someone battling with a life debilitating illness is likely to neglect consulting a physician, but rather jump on the skateboards to see a papa; it’s only in this country that individuals yearning for marriage or impoverished beings desperate to extricate themselves from absolute poverty keep on flocking to the mountain to pray unceasingly and wait for miracles to fall from the heavens above; it’s only in this country that someone taking ARVs is going to be convinced to discard their medication in the rubbish bin as God has already delivered them from evil spirits; it’s only in this country whereby someone struggling to make a breakthrough from whatever their predicament is easily going to be convinced by a prophet someone within the family or indeed a friend is sitting on to their destiny; it’s only in this country where lazy students are likely to take their pens to their papas and prophets to pray over them so that they can easily pass their exams; it’s only in this country that women take their underwear to the prophets to anoint them in order to conceive; it’s only in this country where adults are brainwashed to kneel before the papas as they eulogize them and call them dad or mummy!

What sort of nonsense is this?!

We’ve had a privilege to visit Europe on several occasions; the Europeans who introduced the scared word to us do not and can never fall for such crap alluded to above and yet they remain quite prosperous and successful! And yet we keep flocking to them with a begging bowl…..we’re even looking to the East now and lately, the Middle East! What’s wrong with us Africans?

With the introduction of free education by the New Dawn Administration, we are hoping for a total and absolute transformation among many of us!

The Council of Churches in Zambia General Secretary Bishop, Emmanuel Chikoya has submitted that it is high time the country introduced some kind of professional body which is going to accredit pastors in in our country in order to weed-out rogue pastors amongst us hell-bent on misinterpreting the Bible to hoodwink the masses for their own selfish benefits. We can’t agree more with him.

We are therefore challenging the three Church mother bodies to close ranks and speak with one voice on this issue so that government may not be seen to be meddling in religious affairs.

Next time, we analyse circumstances surrounding Emmanuel “Jay Jay” Banda, former Petauke Member of Parliament. A lot of things don’t seem to add up!

Dr. Nevers Mumba Selling his birthright for a morsel of Bread and Lentil Stew

In a scathing critique, Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba calls out Dr. Nevers Mumba, the former Vice President of Zambia, for betraying his Christian values and integrity in his recent support of President Hakainde Hichilema amidst growing concerns over human rights in the country. Mwamba accuses Mumba of deliberately ignoring the widespread human rights abuses under the current administration while fixating on the mistakes of the previous government. This betrayal, according to Mwamba, marks a dangerous departure from the Christian principles Mumba claims to uphold.

Mwamba further condemns Mumba’s statements as divisive and unchristian, urging him to return to the values of love, truth, and justice that should guide both political and spiritual leadership. He calls on Mumba to remember that true faith is measured not by words alone but by the fruits one bears through actions.

Mwamba Says, Former Vice President, Dr. Nevers Mumba moves with mouthful of scriptures, yet displays utter hate and bitterness harboring in his heart.

By these actions, he pervades Christianity.

His recent statement in a quest to support President Hakainde Hichilema on the concerning state of human rights practices in Zambia, is shocking and demonstrates how low his integrity has sunk.

He deliberately ignores the torture, inhuman treatment, restricted rights and freedoms, harrasment, exclusion because of tribe or region, and other humiliating treatment Zambians have suffered.

He is but deeply obsessed with the ills and mistakes of the former ruling party and yet ignores the ills being repeated by the UPND Government.

Zambians gave the former ruling party an ultimate punishment- the PF was voted out of power.

It goes without saying that Zambia has never experienced war or civil conflict or civil strife and has an admirable record of democracy, peace and security.
Yet today we have the USA Country Report on Human Rights Practices, the Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and others expressing serious concerns about the abuse of human rights, abuses and the rapid emergency of a tyrannical government.

Yet today, we have the United Nations personnel in the country investigating human rights practices in Zambia.

That’s how concerning the extent of misrule of President Hakainde Hichilema is, that matters associated with failed States and nations at war such as; abuse of human rights, break-down of the independence of democratic institutions, oppressions of critics and members of the Opposition, and break-down in the Rule of Law, are in full display in Zambia.

Unless we halt this downward spiral,we may be at the cusp of something ominous foreshadowing our nation.

Dr. Mumba knows that the Lord Jesus Christ came to heal the broken-hearted, preach deliverance to captives, and set free those who are oppressed.

“Love thy neighbour”, Jesus commanded. Dr. Mumba knows that as Christians we are identified NOT by our nice or kind words, but by the fruits we bear; “You will know them by their fruits” Mathew 7;16

If politics or religion is coming between me and my neighbour, I will choose my neighbour.

We cannot abandon who we are as Christians for purposes of fulfilling political loyalties, even when our nationhood is threatened.

Mumba’s recent statements are diabolical, unchristian and promote hatred and bitterness in our nation.

Don’t be like hypocrites who love to pray publicly, Christ admonished us.

In Matthew 6:6: “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen; then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Faith without works is dead.

I call upon my elder brother that as we call ourselves Christians, walk as Christians, let us be like Christ in our both speech and our deeds.

Let us be the light in politics and not be the diabolical.

Hon. Sunday Chanda Calls for Agriculture to Drive Zambia’s Economic Growth

5

Hon. Sunday Chanda, Member of Parliament for Kanchibiya, has called for a strategic focus on agriculture as the cornerstone of Zambia’s economic transformation. He described the nation’s vast arable land, favorable weather, and industrious citizens as untapped assets capable of driving industrialization, creating jobs, and ensuring food security.

Speaking on the urgency of realigning Zambia’s economic strategy, Hon. Chanda highlighted the critical need to modernize the agricultural sector. He emphasized the importance of reducing dependence on rain-fed farming by investing in large-scale irrigation systems to enable year-round farming and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The MP also called for strengthening the country’s agribusiness sector to position Zambia as a hub for agricultural processing. He noted that building strong value chains would not only add value to raw produce but also create thousands of jobs, particularly in rural areas.

Mechanization was another key point of focus. Hon. Chanda stressed that the government must partner with private players to expand access to modern farming equipment and training for small-scale farmers, thereby improving productivity. He also advocated for crop diversification, urging the nation to look beyond maize cultivation and invest in crops like cassava, millet, rice, and high-value cash crops.

Drawing inspiration from Côte d’Ivoire, where large-scale farming and crop diversification have revolutionized agriculture, Hon. Chanda said Zambia has the potential to replicate this success. “Zambia must embrace diversification to secure food security and unlock new export opportunities,” he said.

However, Hon. Chanda acknowledged that the sector faces challenges, including the high cost of inputs, fertilizer smuggling, and limited market access. He called for immediate measures to address these issues, including tax incentives on inputs, streamlined distribution systems, and policies to curb resource leakages.

“Agriculture is more than a means to feed the nation it is a powerful tool to tackle inflation, reduce poverty, and spur economic growth,” Hon. Chanda said. He called for collaborative efforts from stakeholders, policymakers, and citizens to create an enabling environment for the agricultural sector to thrive.

Hon. Chanda concluded by urging Zambia to empower farmers, ensure affordable access to inputs, and adopt modern farming techniques. “Together, we can unlock the full potential of agriculture, fostering prosperity for all and securing a sustainable future for generations to come,” he said.

The call from the Kanchibiya MP comes at a time when Zambia is looking to redefine its economic priorities, with agriculture seen as a sector poised to deliver long-term benefits for the nation.

Trump pardons Jan 6 rioters giving them everything they wanted

6

Until Monday, even some of Donald Trump’s team did not seem to believe he would release all of those arrested after riots at the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.

“If you committed violence on that day, obviously you shouldn’t be pardoned,” Vice-President JD Vance said a little over a week ago.

A few days later, testifying in front of Congress, Trump’s nominee for Attorney General Pam Bondi agreed with a Democratic senator who asked her to condemn the violence of that day.

“I do not agree with violence against any police officer,” she said, adding that she was willing to look individually at each of the more than 1,500 riot-linked cases.

Trump, however, took a far more sweeping approach to the cases on his first day in office.

He issued a handful of commutations and a blanket pardon that effectively freed all the rioters and erased the work of the largest criminal investigation in US history.

His executive order on Monday gave the rioters and their supporters nearly everything they had been pleading for, short of monetary compensation from the government which some prisoner groups have demanded.

In a news conference on Tuesday at the White House, Trump said: “These people have already served years in prison, and they’ve served them viciously.

“It’s a disgusting prison. It’s been horrible. It’s inhumane. It’s been a terrible, terrible thing.”

There were celebratory scenes outside the Washington DC jail where a number of those arrested over the riot have been held, as well as on social media accounts run by the defendants and their supporters.

The mother of Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was released on Tuesday, has posted regular updates about her son.

“Our president gave my son and all the J6ers their lives back!” Zuny Tarrio wrote after learning he would walk free from his 22-year sentence. “They can live again! Breathe fresh air again! Feel the sunshine again!”

One of those released from the Washington DC jail on Tuesday was Rachel Powell, a Pennsylvania woman who was sentenced to more than four years in prison after smashing a window at the Capitol with an ice axe.

Speaking outside the jail, she told the BBC she would now be home in time for her son’s birthday and praised Trump for keeping his promise. “He’s a bigger blessing to me than I could ever imagine,” she said.

Some observers, including policy experts and lawyers representing rioters, were taken aback by the scale of the president’s order.

“The overall consensus was that we would see a differentiation between those who committed violent acts and those who did not,” said Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, a progressive not-for-profit group that opposed the pardons.

“Donald Trump ran for office on law and order, so it’s shocking and upsetting to see him taking action to pardon violent criminals,” she said.

Fourteen people convicted of some of the most serious crimes had their sentences commuted – meaning their offences will remain on the record, but they will still be released from prison.

The justice department, in its last update, said 1,583 people had been arrested or convicted of riot-related crimes.

More than 600 were charged with assaulting, resisting or obstructing police, including around 175 charged with using a weapon or causing serious injury to an officer.

Most of those convicted have served their sentences, or did not receive a jail term at all, but around 250 who are still in prison have started to be released.

And it appears any further investigations – the FBI was still looking for at least 13 suspects and fugitives – will be halted.

Underlining the sweeping finality of his move, Trump named Ed Martin as acting US attorney for Washington DC – the prosecutorial role that has been chiefly responsible for pursuing riot cases.

Martin organised a pro-Trump rally the day before the riot, and has been a staunch critic of the entire investigation.

On the campaign trail, Trump made various statements about the rioters, at times promising blanket pardons but occasionally indicating he might be inclined to keep some of them behind bars.

Supporters of the rioters cheered his blanket pardon on Monday, and have long described the sentences handed out to people they call “J6 hostages” and “political prisoners” as being politically motivated and harsh.

Norm Pattis, a lawyer who defended some of the prisoners, told BBC Newshour that “the notion that somehow this event threatens the republic is overdone”, adding that Confederate rebels were pardoned after the Civil War.

“If we could come together as a country after such a violent act, and after people openly took arms and killed one another… why were we still prosecuting people for criminal trespass four years later after an afternoon’s riot?” he said.

Polls, however, suggest a blanket pardon including for violent convicts is unpopular. A recent Associated Press survey indicated only two in 10 Americans approve of pardoning most of those involved.

Kawambwa Tea, a 100-percent Government-owned company, has reported earning approximately $1 million in export revenue in 2024, marking a significant milestone for the enterprise.

Speaking during a meeting with Special Assistant to President Hakainde Hichilema for Political Affairs, Levy Ngoma, Kawambwa Tea Chief Financial Officer Tachila Zulu disclosed that 80 percent of the company’s exports consist of bulk tea, primarily supplied to industries such as breweries. The remaining 20 percent comprises processed tea, destined for direct consumer use.

Mr. Zulu highlighted the company’s role in fostering economic growth through job creation, noting that Kawambwa Tea currently employs over 500 people.

Mr. Ngoma, who visited the Kawambwa Tea estate this morning, praised the company’s achievements, calling it a “remarkable development story.” He emphasized that the success of Kawambwa Tea demonstrates the potential of Government-owned enterprises to thrive when adequately supported.

“The rebirth of Kawambwa Tea is a testament to what can be achieved with proper investment and management,” said Mr. Ngoma. “The employment of over 500 people is not just a number; it represents livelihoods, families, and communities benefiting from this enterprise.”

The government’s focus on revitalizing key industries, including Kawambwa Tea, aligns with its broader agenda of economic recovery and job creation. Mr. Ngoma reiterated the administration’s commitment to supporting public enterprises and ensuring they contribute meaningfully to Zambia’s development goals.

Kawambwa Tea’s achievements underscore the viability of locally owned businesses in driving economic growth and creating employment opportunities for Zambians.
