Former President Edgar Lungu Challenged to tell the Nation Whether he has retired or not from Active Politics

Copperbelt-based Good Governance activist Peter Mulenga has challenged former President Edgar Lungu to clearly tell the nation whether or not he has retired from politics.

And Mr. Mulenga has condemned the storming of Mr. Lungu’s Lusaka residence by scores of uniformed police on Wednesday morning.

He said Mr. Lungu was a good man who is being misled over the issue of returning to politics by some few people surrounding him.

Mr. Mulenga said the sixth republican president has never publicly spoken about returning to politics contrary to what is being portrayed by some of his supporters.

“It’s written all over that former President Edgar Changwa Lungu is being misled by some ‘power hungry’ party officials. I know Edgar Changwa Lungu as a good man, but he is being misled by some few people who have surrounded him. The endorsement being made all over by boot lickers do not mean well for the Zambian public at large. The endorsements were unconstitutional. The current endorsements of Edgar Changwa Lungu are questionable. Dr Edgar Changwa Lungu has never spoken about it, and it’s like they are forcing him. He has told us on a number of occasions that he had retired, so am calling upon Edgar Changwa Lungu to come out clear on his position,” Mr. Mulenga said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mulenga said the former president needs to enjoy his retirement in peace.

He said the storming of Mr. Lungu’s residence by police was embarrassing to President Hakainde Hichilema and the country at large.

“But again the events of today where the police storm his residence should be condemned; it has no place in this country. And in my opinion, this is why he has been forced to return in 2026 for revenge only. Mr President sir, as commander in chief please you need to look at this very seriously otherwise the witch hunt issues in Zambia of former presidents will also catch up with you sir. Former presidents need to enjoy their retirement in peace. Also let’s be reminded that Zambia is a democracy and people are free to express themselves, however they should be limited to their freedoms. One cannot be insulting the president in the name of democracy. What happened today is embarrassing to the President and the country at large. Most of the police officers have studied law, and I should believe that they know that Mr Lungu enjoys immunity.

The question is, was today’s event a quest to embarrass the former President or a political game instigated by the UPND? The Bible says; never take your own revenge. In Deuteronomy 32:35.Vengeance is Mine, and retribution, in due time their foot will slip; for the day of their calamity is near, and the impending things are hastening upon them. I leave the country to Judge. I submit,” Mr. Mulenga stated.

Meanwhile, social commentator Isaac Mwendela Nsoneka says the trend of harassing former Presidents in Zambia won’t end.

“Constitutionally each individual has got the right and Privilege to occupy and hold the office of President of the republic of Zambia for a period of 10 years which they can decide to cut short and serve for one term of 5 years but never to prolong the 10 years period to 15 or any other number of years that is not 10 years which is split into 2 terms, so the time to stop working from state house and lining up police officers on Mosi O’Tunya road is coming for President Hakainde Hichilema. Whenever that time comes, it will be very interesting to see who in UPND will stand with Mr Hichilema as has been the case with Dr Lungu whose house seems to now be more of a community one than any other. In all this remember that the days of subserviced loyalty are long gone, the people will only come to your aid if you once or twice aided them or even still do. How will the Membership remember Mr Hakainde? So it doesn’t seem like many would have fond memories if the end were today or tomorrow going by the recent outbursts from UPND members for lack of a proper reward system,” Mr. Nsoneka said.

By BENEDICT TEMBO

First National Bank (FNB) Zambia has announced one-year partnerships with KUPES Young Women’s Network and Posterity Solutions aimed at accelerating youth mentorship and empowerment initiatives.

KUPES is a non-profit organisation founded in 2014 devoted to the development of young women and girls.
It’s mission is to empower young women by educating and equipping them with skills and opportunities that will enable them become leaders actively participating in the shaping of their world in reducing poverty, ending violence against women, catalysing communities, and pioneering social and economic development.

Posterity was founded in 2022 with the goal of seeing a population with shared values that are aimed at concerted efforts towards national development.

The organisation aims to create a legacy of effective leadership by training today’s leaders to mentor and inspire the next generation.
Posterity is a call to positively influence cultural change to a whole persons’ growth concept and using personal development approach as a vehicle, thereby investing in the next generation of Zambian leaders.

Speaking on the strategic partnerships, FNB Zambia Head – Strategic Marketing and Communications, Kasali Mwaba-Kaingu commended KUPES and Posterity for the shared commitment to create a better world by providing real help, aligned to the bank’s ethos of ‘How can we help you?’.

“At FNB, we see ourselves as part of the solution to the societal challenges youths face. This understanding is under-pinned on the basis that the majority of FNB Zambia employees are youths.
Therefore, we make deliberate efforts to support not only our employees, but the communities we operate in so that we can collectively provide tangible and sustainable solutions to empower the youth to positive contribute to the growth and wellbeing of our society,” Mrs. Kaingu said.
“This is the second year that we are partnering with KUPES to support the work they do in helping young women and girls to realize their potential, demonstrating the bank’s confidence in these activities.
This year, FNB is particularly excited to commence the partnership with Posterity Solutions under the Ascend Men’s Mentorship Program, where we will reach young boys across the country with a tailored mentorship program, carefully designed for boys. We are happy to take lead on this initiative by investing resources in meeting the growing need for boys in Zambia to get inspiration and guidance that will help them to shape a successful path. FNB is passionate about working with like-minded organizations focused on creating positive societal impact and the investment in the two organizations over the next one-year period will go a long way in offering the help needed in our communities”, she added.
KUPES Young Women’s Network Founder Norena Chiteba said, “We started the KUPES activities in February 2015 with a membership of nine girls and have since grown to a network of about 3,000 members. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of organizations like FNB Zambia who share our vision of meaningful impact to support young women. We are excited to continue the partnership with FNB so that we can elevate our activities to reach more girls across the country”.
Posterity Solutions Founder, Mina Tavaris Mukuma said “The Ascend Men’s Mentorship Programme has been carefully crafted to empower boys to take up leadership positions through mentorship from a network of men who will receive the requisite training. Our focus is to create a legacy of effective leadership by training today’s leaders to mentor and inspire the next generation. We would like to thank FNB for starting what will become a movement of men’s mentorship, something that other corporate organizations can emulate”.
FNB Zambia’s focus on real help has seen the bank embark on different community initiatives that include among others:

• Delivery of financial literacy education in partnership with Project Concern Zambia for women empowerment groups, and as part of Financial Literacy Week in the 23 locations where the Bank has branch presence.
• Donation of sewing machines and a peanut butter-making machine to the Mother of Millions Sandulula Women’s Empowerment program in Kitwe, that works with formerly incarcerated women.
• Donation of sanitary material to Chikankanta Secondary School in partnership with Awanachi Magazine as the Bank seeks to address period poverty that continues to impact access to education.
• Building and handover of a 1 x 2 classroom block equipped with desks and an ablution block to a community school in Luanshya with an aim to increase literacy levels.
FNB Zambia’s vision is to create a better world by offering real help in the communities that the Bank operates in. In April this year, FNB celebrated 14 years of operating in Zambia and the Bank continues to position itself as a helpful, innovative, digitally led financial and lifestyle services provider, adapting to the evolving needs of the diverse customers.
The bank is built on offering real and intuitive help and this is reflected in how the Bank continues to innovate and re-invent its products and services, as well as its societal impact.

Bakala Staying Calm Despite Second U17 AFCON Defeat

2

Zambia Under-17 coach Ian Bakala has lamented his team’s 3-2 loss to South Africa in Wednesday night’s Group B match at the Junior Africa Cup in Algeria.

Bottom placed Zambia will come up against Group B leaders Morocco on Saturday in their final group stage match in Annaba.

Zambia started the Africa Cup campaign with a 1-0 loss to Nigeria last Sunday.

In a post-match comment, Bakala said he never expected the Junior Chipolopolo to lose against South Africa.

“With the way the game was going, we didn’t expect to lose. We conceded a very soft goal but we must put this behind our backs and try to focus on Morocco,” Bakala said.

Morocco leads Group B with six points, followed by Nigeria and South Africa on three points each.

“I think we have a high chance to beat Morocco. Most likely they will come underrating us and change the team but we are not relying on that. We have to go there and win the game. It is a do or die match,” Bakala said.

The Junior Chipolopolo Boys are making their second appearance at the continental tournament.

Stone Nyirenda Tells Nchanga Rangers to Win Relegation Battle

Former Zambia and Nchanga Rangers forward Stone Nyirenda has rallied Brave as they fight to stay afloat in the FAZ Super Division with three matches left in the season.

In his address to Nchanga players in Chingola, Nyirenda said he expects Nchanga to post good results in their last three league games.

Mkango played for Nchanga between 1985 and 1987 before trekking to Belgium for a lengthy professional stint.

“I expect nothing but positive results in all the remaining games at home and away. My prayer is that as I head back to Belgium, the team will collect the points needed to survive relegation,” Nyirenda said.

“This Club is very big and you should consider it a privilege to be here. You need to be united as a team and each one of you should have a high level of discipline in order to be successful in your career,” he said.

According to Nchanga Media Officer Andrew Ukwimi, Nyirenda exchanged notes with the club president Shachinda on several issues pertaining to Nchanga’s future.

“We are motivating the boys and the technical bench as we play the remaining crucial games so that we can remain in the Super Division,” Shachinda said.

Nchanga Rangers Head Coach Aggrey Chiyangi expressed gratitude to Nyirenda and club icon Patrick Nkhata for checking on the team.

“I am convinced that you still care for the Club as shown by your visit to motivate the boys. We are extremely grateful for this,” Chiyangi said.

Mary Chirwa removed as DEC Boss and Appointed Ambassador to Mozambique

Nason Banda has been appointed as the new Director General of the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Zambia. The announcement was made by President Hakainde Hichilema, who also appointed and swore in a number of Ambassadors and High Commissioner Designates. Mary Chirwa, who previously held the position of Director General of the DEC, has been appointed as Ambassador Designate to the Republic of Mozambique.

During the swearing-in ceremony, President Hichilema urged leaders to accept criticism and restrain themselves from reacting. He expressed full confidence in the abilities of the new DEC Director General and praised his wealth of experience. The President stated that he believes Nason Banda will continue the excellent work of his predecessor in bringing drug trafficking, money laundering, and financial crimes under control.

President Hichilema also appointed and swore in Morecome Mumba, Pamela Mwelela Chisanga, Mazuba Bernadine Moonze, Ivan Zyuulu, and Andrew Bwezani Banda as Ambassadors and High Commissioner Designates. The President is confident that they will play a crucial role in advancing the New Dawn’s policy of economic diplomacy. He advised them to focus on key areas such as alternative sources of renewable energy, agriculture, tourism, and building value chains using the country’s mineral resources.

The new appointments reflect President Hichilema’s commitment to tackling drug trafficking and financial crimes in Zambia, as well as his efforts to promote economic diplomacy and sustainable development. The President’s emphasis on accepting criticism and fostering collaboration among leaders suggests a more open and inclusive approach to governance in Zambia. The new Ambassadors and High Commissioner Designates are expected to leverage their expertise and networks to promote Zambia’s economic interests and strengthen its relationships with other countries.

Socialist Party accuses Zambia’s President of using state apparatus to intimidate former President Lungu

The Socialist Party in Zambia has issued a scathing statement condemning the recent actions of President Hakainde Hichilema and accusing him of using the state apparatus to intimidate his political opponents.

In the statement, which was released on Thursday, the party took issue with the recent attempt by the Zambia Police and other security wings to storm the residence of former President Edgar Lungu. The party argued that the move was a deliberate show of force intended to send a message to Lungu and his family that they were not safe from the President’s wrath.

“The shameful attempt by Zambia Police and other security wings to storm the residence of former President Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu yesterday should be understood as flexing of muscles by President Hakainde Hichilema to send a strong message that he had power to fix the former president and his family using the state apparatus,” the statement read.

The party’s spokesperson, Frank Bwalya, went on to accuse President Hichilema of being preoccupied with the possibility of losing power to his predecessor, citing the President’s recent public comments as evidence.

“In fact, Mr. Hichilema’s public comments recently expose his preoccupation with the possibility of losing power to his predecessor,” Bwalya said.

Bwalya also criticized President Hichilema for his recent speech at the Labour Day commemoration in Lusaka, which he claimed focused more on the previous ruling party than on the issues affecting the Zambian people.

“This was confirmed by his action to spend more time talking about the previous ruling party than labour issues in his speech at the Labour Day commemoration in Lusaka on Monday,” Bwalya said.

The Socialist Party spokesperson also took issue with President Hichilema’s alleged abuse of the police, arguing that it would undermine their professionalism and compromise their integrity.

“We wish to advise President Hichilema to stop abusing the security wings because it would undermine their integrity and compromise their professionalism apart from making Zambia a laughing stock,” Bwalya said.

In conclusion, the Socialist Party called on President Hichilema to focus on addressing the issues affecting the Zambian people, such as the high cost of living and lack of jobs.

“Finally, and importantly, we continue to demand that Mr. Hichilema concentrate on fixing the economy and bettering the lives of Zambians. He should not forget that Zambians did not vote for him to fix somebody but the problems causing the cost of living to rise and lack of jobs, to mention but a few,” the statement read.

Kalabo woman appears in court for attempting to set ablaze her husband

A 29 year old woman of Kalabo district has appeared in court for setting ablaze her husband with petrol and a lit match stick following a matrimonial dispute.

Millicent Chilimazi, a peasant farmer, is charged with attempted murder contrary to Section 215 of the Penal Code Act Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

This is in a matter where Chilimazi appeared before Kalabo Subordinate Court Magistrate, Eric Mushitu for mention.

Magistrate Mushitu had since adjourned the matter to 16th May 2023 for mention and awaiting committal to the High Court of Zambia for trial.

The accused remains in lawful custody.

Particulars of the offense are that the said Millicent Chilimazi on 22nd April, 2023 in Kalabo District of Western province did attempt to murder Chris Siwale.

Earlier, Magistrate Mushitu granted an application by the state to have the initial charge amended in order to meet the circumstances of the case.

This was after the state had requested the court to grant amendment citing Section 213 of the Criminal Procedure Code Chapter 88 of the Laws of Zambia.

The state submitted that the initial charge under which the accused appeared before court and pleaded guilty the previous day was minor as compared with the capital offense committed.

Meanwhile, the court ruled against a bail application by the accused stating that the attempted murder charge was not bailable.

The accused had requested the court to grant her bail pending trial on grounds that she is taking care of three biological children among them a baby.

Labour legislation review key to industrial harmony – ZCTU

Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says Government through the Ministry of Labour has initiated a process to review the Employment Act N0. 3 of 2019 as well as the Industrial and Labour Relations Act Cap 269 of the laws of Zambia.

General Secretary for the Workers Union of TAZARA in Zambia (WUTAZ) Jacob Lombe, who represented ZCTU, pointed out that the two legislations are key to the governance of employment relationships and industrial relations in Zambia.

He noted that it is the concern of the labour movement that the Government might review the two legislations in favour of the employers and at the expense of workers in the name of reducing the cost of doing business.

Mr Lombe said poverty levels have remained high even during periods of high economic growth due to the fact that wages are suppressed while employers are making huge profits.

“For us to realise shared prosperity, there is need to address decent work gaps, ensure economic transformation through inclusive growth,” Mr Lombe said.

ZCTU Representative said this during the commemoration of Labour Day which was held under the theme” Accelerating Job Creation for Economic Growth”. at Kalalantekwe School Ground in Shiwang`andu.

Mr. Lombe added that, Job creation at the stage our economy has reached is very critical and the theme resonates well in defining the future of work in Zambia.

He further said there is need for creation of decent jobs that are locally supported that can help workers fight poverty and achieve economic liberation.

And Shiwang`andu District Commissioner Maureen Bwembya who graced this year`s Labour Day in Shiwang`andu District said the vision of the New Dawn Government is to have a united and prosperous Zambia that provides equal opportunities for all.

Ms Bwembya added that Government will continue to create an environment in which every citizen will have an opportunity to participate in and benefit from the economic activities.

“Government is determined to meet the basic needs of every Zambian and create a conducive environment for Zambia to become a prosperous middle income country by implementing policies that will help to achieve this goal”. Said Ms. Bwembya

Ms Bwembya said that Government is aware of the unemployment levels among youths, hence creation of opportunities such as Skills development among others.

She said the Government recognises the agriculture as one key sector that it will prioritise to improve the livelihoods of the majority because it holds the potential for job creation and economic wealth.

Ms Bwembya emphasised that with increased productivity the country`s economy is likely to grow.

NGO calls for transparency in Konkola Copper Mines negotiations with Vedanta Mineral Resources.

7

The Sustainable Natural Resource Empowerment Initiative (SuNREI) National Coordinator, Eugene Mulenga, has called for transparency in the negotiations between the Zambian government and Vedanta Mineral Resources, an Indian investor, regarding Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).

According to Mr. Mulenga, transparency in these negotiations is crucial for ensuring a fair deal for the people of Zambia, especially for miners, suppliers, contractors, and the community. The unresolved situation of KCM has increased social ills in the mining community, such as a notable increase in incidents of crime, poverty, closure of local companies, job losses, and limited job opportunities for graduates and artisans.

Additionally, the situation has led to an increase in debt exposure to NAPSA, ZRA, and other entities by local businesses. As a solution to this issue, Mr. Mulenga has proposed a roadmap that includes publishing the economic, technical, and equipment status of KCM, inviting bidders to publicly disclose their investment bids and plans within 30 days, and shortlisting bidders based on five key pillars.

Furthermore, SuNREI proposes signing a socio-economic contract with the local community, the government, and the investor to ensure that the investor meets Zambia’s expectations and aspirations. SuNREI is a Copperbelt based NGO that advocates for policy change and community approach towards sustainable use of natural resources.

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance, Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, announced that the Zambian government will soon make pronouncements on both KCM and Mopani Copper Mines, aiming to get both mines into production. The groundwork for more production in mining was laid out following the re-alignment of the tax regime in mineral royalty tax and the establishment of a more stable investment climate for the sector. The government expects the mining sector, along with supportive sectors, to perform better this year.

High demand for agriculture products is an opportunity for economic growth- Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane

4

The Minister of Finance and National Planning in Zambia, Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, has stated that the current challenge of high demand for grain and other agricultural products in the region presents an opportunity for economic growth in the country. The high demand for grain, particularly maize, has caused mealie meal prices to rise in Zambia, negatively impacting the people. To address this, Dr. Musokotwane has emphasized the need for Zambia to quickly produce larger agricultural surpluses that can be exported, thereby earning the country dollars and creating jobs.

Dr. Musokotwane noted that the existing small, medium, and commercial farmers will play a crucial role in the production of more food for export. However, he highlighted that the export market is significant, and additional skills and capital will be required to meet the demand. To unlock higher economic growth, the government is working on various initiatives, including farm block development in agriculture. This initiative aims to improve agricultural production in the country by introducing models that encourage large-scale and small-scale producers to work together to produce material for a processing factory.

Dr. Musokotwane acknowledged that while the growth of Zambia’s economy was driven by the ICT, transport, and education sectors in 2022, it was subdued in key sectors such as agriculture, mining, tourism, and manufacturing. To achieve higher economic growth, the government is finalizing the formulation of the Comprehensive Agriculture Transformation Programme (CATP) and developing the National Crop Diversification Strategy. These strategies will enhance production and productivity of a diverse range of agricultural commodities and products. The government also wants the mining sector to be one of the key drivers of growth to attain copper production of three million tons per year.

The government has heightened security against illegal exports and encouraged the local private sector to import mealie meal from surplus countries for sale at border areas in towns next to countries with a deficit of food availability. Nevertheless, Dr. Musokotwane has emphasized that the ultimate solution to food deficits in the region is to produce more food and export it to countries in need. The implementation plans for the farm blocks are nearly ready, and the money to establish them is available. Work will start within a few months, and the marketing of the farm blocks will begin soon.

Former First Lady Mama Esther Lungu Involved in Dispute Over $400,000

In September 2021, an incident involving the niece of the former President of Zambia, Catherine Banda, occurred. She was entrusted with keeping $400,000 in safe custody, but later alleged that she gave $300,000 to Elizabeth Phiri and her daughter, Fuhana Patel, who subsequently filed a complaint with the police regarding theft of their vehicles and property.

Former First Lady, Mama Esther Lungu, requested the return of her money from Catherine Banda in August 2022. However, it was discovered that the money had already been surrendered to Elizabeth Phiri and her daughter Fuhana Patel. Upon being summoned to family meetings, it was revealed that the duo had used the money to purchase the same property under question.

An agreement was reached between the parties involved, whereby Elizabeth Phiri and Fuhana Patel agreed to surrender the certificate of title for the property in question (stand number S/Lusaka/SLN 0003/2977 located in Libala south water works area) and three motor vehicles – a Mitsubishi Canter bearing registration number BAV 5282, a Toyota Allex bearing registration number BAV 3986, and a Toyota Runx bearing registration number BAV 3986 – to compensate for the money.

The duo willingly surrendered the property and vehicles to the former President’s residence in accordance with the agreement, bringing the certificate of title and vehicles to the residence.

However, Mama Esther Lungu has expressed surprise that this matter, which was settled by a civil agreement, is now under police investigation. Yesterday, heavily armed police officers accompanied by anti-riot vehicles reportedly stormed the residence of the former President, demanding to search the premises.

The incident involving Mama Esther Lungu and the dispute over the $400,000 has caused quite a stir in Zambia, with many following the developments with interest. As investigations continue, it remains to be seen what the outcome of this situation will be.
