Patriotic Front (PF) Media and Publicity Committee Vice Chairperson, Sunday Chanda has lashed out at the critics of President Edgar Lungu on court case on deferring 2016 elections and the accommodation of the former first lady Dr Christine Kaseba.

In a statement released to the media, Mr Chanda said the deferring of the 2016 elections is not a PF project and the issue has been disowned by PF. Mr Chanda further dismissed assertions that the former first Lady is being mistreated because he was a political opponent to President Lungu

ATTACKS AGAINST PRESIDENT LUNGU MALICIOUS – STATEMENT BY SUNDAY CHANDA, VICE CHAIRPERSON, PF MEDIA AND PUBLICITY COMMITTEE

Lusaka, Zambia, 28th June 2015 – We have noted that Political Flukes such as FDD Leader Ms. Edith Nawakwi derive the greatest pleasure in distorting and misrepresenting objectivity and reasonableness.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we repeat for Ms. Nawakwi and her sponsor’s ears that the petition before the Courts is not and will not be a project of the Patriotic Front (PF) whichever way they want to look at it. PF has its own legal team and if and when need arises to bring any matters before the Courts, we will not seek the services of a lawyer who also happens to be Mr. Wynter Kabimba’s friend, Mr. Malipenga.

We are not desperate for representation in the context of the said application before the Courts. Suffice to state that Mr. Malipenga is an officer of the Court and how the Courts determine his matter on behalf of those he is representing, is none of PF’s business or interest. It is shameful and wishful thinking for Ms. Nawakwi to allege that no such application would go to the Courts without the President’s express authority.

President Lungu does not toy with the Courts of law and neither does he play ping-pong with the Legislature. Besides being the Republican President, President Lungu is an officer of the Court with great appreciation for the separation of powers.

This is one domain Ms. Nawakwi does not appreciate going by her sentiments, seemingly she was used to Presidents who kept Courts in their pockets. On that score we say to her that “zozi are zozi, Lungu is anaza”! Unless in their own imagination, there exists another PF apart from the ruling party, it does not make sense that they still insist on a matter we have disowned as a Party.

PF also finds the Post Editorial of June 28, 2015 full of distortions and malice. President Lungu does not view the former First Lady Dr. Christine Kaseba as his political opponent as the editorial alleges.

PF has made it crystal clear that whatever happened following the passing on of our Patriarch and founding President Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata (MHSRIP) was part of the party’s intra-party democracy and no one has victimized the former First Lady for having exercised her right in that regard.

As part of his inaugural address on 25th January 2015, President Lungu promised to take care of the former First Lady and this position has never changed to this day. No sane person can doubt the fact that President Lungu has always held late President Sata in highest regard and that is not even a matter subject of any debate.

There are people whom claim to have loved the late President who never even spared a moment to pay their last respects to one of the country’s greatest sons of the soil. The Zambian people know who these are by name and we shall not venture into that debate because by their conduct the public will continue to judge them.

Lastly, PF is aware that accommodation acceptable to the former First Lady has been found and the statement from the Secretary to Cabinet put this fruitless debate to a close.

We ask that the media and their mouthpieces will respect the former First Lady’s and that of the Sata family’s privacy in this regard.

KCM explains why it is importing Copper concentrate from Chile

25

KCM

Zambia’s largest copper mining operation, Konkola Copper Mines says it will not process the 5,000 tonnes of copper concentrate it imported from Chile until all parties are satisfied that there will be no adverse impact.

In a statement, KCM said it imported the concentrate because it is important for KCM to operate its smelter as close to design capacity as possible, in order to achieve maximum efficiency.

It said the design criteria of KCM’s Nchanga smelter requires high grade concentrate feed to function most efficiently which it said is not available in sufficient quantities in Zambia while several new mines ramp up to full capacity.

It said there is also a limited availability of suitable concentrates the region, which necessitates looking further afield.

‘In recent weeks Konkola Copper Mines has engaged in extensive consultations with stakeholders in relation to the importing of copper concentrates from Chile. KCM CEO, Mr Steven Din, recently met with Mr. Joseph Chewe, General Secretary of the Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) and other union leaders to brief them about the rationale for the concentrate imports.  The other leaders came from the National Union of Mining and Allied Workers (NUMAW) and the United Mineworkers Union of Zambia (UMUZ),’ it said.

KCM said it is fully engaged with the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) and Mine Safety Department (MSD) in devising appropriate procedures to protect employees, communities and the environment.

‘KCM takes the health and safety of its employees, the surrounding communities and the environment very seriously,’ it said.

The body of Nkaki was discovered by members of the public who later reported the matter to relevant authorities.

The motive behind the suicide has not yet been established.

This is the second suicide case in Chilubi in a space of one month.

Late last month, a school teacher hanged himself using a necktie in his house, reportedly due to financial problems.

Road contractors who abandon projects are criminals-Edgar Lungu

23

Great East Road
PRESIDENT Lungu says road contractors who abandon projects after being given money are criminals who should be prosecuted.

Speaking when he inspected the Chipata-Mfuwe road yesterday, Mr Lungu also said Government is willing to support local contractors.

“Contractors who run away with the money are criminals and should be followed,” he said.

He said local contractors who do shoddy works do not deserve any space in the engineering institution.

Mr Lungu said it is important that local contractors work according to Government’s expectations.

“We are ready to support local contractors. They should do a good job. When they impress us, it means that the involvement of the Chinese in our road works will be reducing. It is very important that they impress us when they are given projects. We want them to do quality works,” Mr Lungu said.

He commended Sable Construction Company for the quality works being done on the road.

“I am impressed with what I have seen. I have been told that the road will last for 50 years once the drainages are in place,” Mr Lungu said.

He also reiterated his commitment to upholding the country’s constitution.

Mr Lungu said he has no intentions of changing the constitution in order to remain in power.
“Those people who are saying that I want to change the constitution to go for a third term, how, I have only been in office few months. Let me work,” he said.

And Sable Construction Company managing director Nazir Aloo assured Mr Lungu that the road works are of high standard.

“We have done 20kms and we are remaining with four to five kilometres and we will finish in the next two months,” Mr Aloo said.

He said the road will last for 50 years provided the drainage system is in place.

And hundreds of Mfuwe residents turned up to see President Lungu.

The residents lined up along the road with the clenched fists (Patriotic Front) symbol as the Presidential motorcade passed while President Lungu waved at them.

President Lungu was in Mambwe district to drum up support for PF candidate Jacob Shuma in the Malambo constituency by-election set for next week on Tuesday.

Other candidates contesting the seat are Peter Phiri of the UPND, Jarious Mchenga of UNIP and Florence Mwayopa, an independent.

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu introduces PF candidate in the Petauke Central by-election, Dora Sliya, at a rally held at Kaulu Day Secondary school in Petauke

PRESIDENT Lungu has called on the electorate in Petauke Central Constituency to rally behind Patriotic Front (PF) candidate Dora Siliya to enable them to expedite development which they have been denied for almost two years.

He has also called on traditional leaders in Petauke District in Eastern Province to embrace opposition leaders campaigning for their candidates in the Petauke by-elections.

Addressing a rally at Kaulu Day Secondary School in Chief Kalindawalo’s chiefdom yesterday, Mr Lungu asked the voters to give him Dora Siliya for “effective development”.

“Much as electorates have a choice to choose a candidate they want, I also have a democratic right to choose which MPs to work with and while I have been criticised that government should not be selective on who to work with, I will favour the PF,” Mr Lungu said.

Other candidates contesting the seat are Allan Zulu of the UPND and Ignasio Phiri of UNIP.

Mr Lungu said voters in Petauke should not be cheated by the opposition that the Tuesday elections are meant to change government because he is still President.

President Lungu also warned that he will not tolerate PF members who marginalise new members. He said the party is for all.

He said those that feel they can not work with new members should leave the PF saying the late President Michael Sata taught him to be accommodative of new members.

The President said he differed with a lot of people prior to the Presidential elections in January but has since embraced them.

“Those against new members are lucky because I am not in the mood to show my strength. I am just watching them and they will be judged based on their work and dues given on merit,” he cautioned.

The President has further advised Ms Siliya to ensure that she focuses on her developmental programmes after being voted into office.

He reiterated the need to end the talk on tribalism and to have peaceful campaigns.
He said Petauke will benefit from the 920 boreholes donated by the Chinese government and equipment for making dams and rehabilitating roads, among others.

Meanwhile, the President said he is not pushing an agenda for him to run for a third term because Zambia has no shortage of leadership.

And Ms Siliya has commended President Lungu for providing good leadership within the few months he has been in office.

The President also addressed rallies at Petauke Secondary School and Minga Stop Primary School grounds.

He also stated that the PF is looking for politicians who can ably articulate issues in Parliament and that he will continue to choose people to work with.

President Lungu has said chiefs should receive opposition leaders with open hands as they are their children but cautioned them against influencing voters.

Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Chiefs Mumbi and Kalindawalo of the Nsenga people of Petauke District, Mr Lungu said as much as chiefs may have their own preferred candidates they should not influence electorates on who to vote for.

“Zambia is a democratic nation and as such, tenets of democracy should be allowed to prevail in the June 30 by-elections. Let democracy prevail and ours is democracy that builds,” he said.

The President said he has received reports of certain chiefs and villages supporting certain candidates but appealed to them against influencing electorates, but to promote peace.

And responding to the traditional leader’s calls for relief food owing to the poor rainfall pattern experienced in the last farming season, Mr Lungu said the office of the Vice-President has already done a needs assessment for areas that are in need.

He said Vice-President Inonge Wina has already assured him that her office is addressing the matter.

The President also stated that concerns by the chiefs on effective management of the crop marketing process by the Food Reserve Agency will end as government is re-introducing the co-operatives in rural areas to handle the exercise.

Senior Chief Kalindawalo appealed to the President to address concerns in the disbursement of youth empowerment funds in Petauke.

He also said late President Sata had assured them of a university in the district and appealed for the construction of a stadium.

Chief Kalindawalo also appealed for the elevation of Petauke to a municipal council.

Chief Mumbi thanked President Lungu for going back to his home area to discuss with traditional leaders the developmental path of the district.

Today’s Message: Give Thought to Your Ways

31

bible

Today’s Scripture

“The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.”
(Proverbs 14:15, NIV)

Today’s Word with Joel & Victoria

One of the characteristics of a prudent person is that they give thought to their ways. So many people today just act, or react, based on their emotions or circumstances. They let the world around them determine how they should feel or what they should do.

They believe everything they hear in the news. When the economy is up, they are up. When the economy is down, they are down. Don’t let that be you today! Give thought to your ways. Submit every decision to the Lord in prayer and allow Him to direct you from inside your heart. Don’t believe everything you hear.

Let the Lord guide your steps. As you take time to meditate before the Lord and submit your plans to Him, Proverbs says that your ways will be established. You will find supernatural peace that passes understanding, and you will live in success all the days of your life.

Give thought to your ways!

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for Your faithfulness to me. Thank You for guiding and directing my steps. Help me each day to give thought to my ways and follow the good plan You have for me in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Government secures release of five Zambian fishermen from DRC

5

Government has secured the release of five Zambian fishermen who were detained at Kilwa Mulenga in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The five fish mongers were released yesterday around 13 00 hours after a meeting between the Zambian delegation and Congolese officials held at Burea Du Cadre De Concertation Societe at Kilwa Mulenga.

Nchelenge District Commissioner (DC) Royd Chakaba led the Zambian delegation while the Territorial Administrator for Mpweto District Ngombe Mwamba was the leader of the Congolese team and chaired the meeting.

After an hour and half negotiations the Congolese officials agreed to release the Zambian nationals in exchange for the release of the Congolese fishermen that were in detention at Kilwa Nshimba immigration post on the Zambian side for illegal entry.

Joshua Makamba 20, Timothy Masongo 28, John Mwansa 20, Lewis Kabamba 30 and the 32 year old Philip Mwansa were apprehended by the Congolese officials for using mosquito nets for fishing about two weeks ago and were detained at Kilwa Mulenga.

And the Territorial Administrator for Mpweto District in DRC, Ngombe Mwamba called for strengthened ties between Zambia and his country.

Mr. Mwamba said there is need to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries to reduce on crime and enhance trade.

He said it is regrettable that the two neigbhouring countries could only meet when there were problems.

Earlier Mr. Mwamba complained of ill treatment by the Zambian authorities in Nchelenge District of Luapula Province.

He observed that the refusal by the Zambian authorities to accord his team a chance to table their concerns recently though at short notice undermined the bilateral relations between the two nations.

Meanwhile Nchelenge District Commissioner (DC) Royd Chakaba conveyed a message of condolences to the people of DRC over ten lives that perished on the Luapula River.

Mr. Chakaba said President Edgar Lungu regretted the death of the ten people from Nkole Island who drowned last week.

President Lungu praised for denouncing deferring of 2016 polls maneuvers President Edgar Lungu has been praised for distancing himself from the maneuvers to defer the 2016 general elections to 2022.

The Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) by allowing the courts to make ruling on the matter, President has shown to the nation that there was no involvement of the high authorities in the maneuvers to have the general elections deferred.

Executive Director Boniface Cheembe says his organization does trust that the Courts will in the same vein do what is right thing in terms of presiding over the matter.

Mr. Cheembe has told Qfm News in an interview that what SACCORD however believes is that Zambia has more important issues that need to be addressed and therefore need not be distracted.

He says his organization thinks that the country needs to make progress in the many issues that have been of public debate such as the Public Order Act and the constitution making process.

Mr. Cheembe has advised that the country needs to start planning for the long run as opposed to being stack with the same issues.

He explains that this means that the Zambia should now start making strides in reducing high poverty levels and unemployment among other issues affecting the people of Zambia.

Meanwhile, President Edgar Lungu has arrived in Livingstone for a night stop after campaigning for the Patriotic Front candidates in Eastern Province.

The Presidential challenger carrying the President touched down at Harry Mwaanga International airport at 18.12 hours.

President Lungu was received by Southern Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu, Provincial Permanent Secretary Sibanze Simuchoba and other senior government officials.

President Lungu who is in Livingstone for a night stop is tomorrow expect to leave for Western province for campaign meetings for the Mulobezi parliamentary bye election slated for next Tuesday June 30.

Power chop down Forest to close gap with Zanaco

Second placed Power Dynamos are now two points behind leaders Zanaco after a 1-0 home win over Forest Rangers.

Martin Phiri scored the games lone goal in the 38th minute in a tightly contested match at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

However, controversy surrounded Phiri’s goal after the ball seemingly did not cross the line after it hit the beam.

Referee Odario Simwiinde adjudged that the entire ball crossed the line and let the goal stand.

After the final whistle, Forest players closed-in on Simwiinde who left the pitch under heavy police guard following the decision.

Power move to 27 points behind Zanaco on 29 points after they were held to a 3-3 away draw by Green Eagles in Choma.

Eagles took the lead in the 4th minute through Adamson Mulao but Moses Phiri equalised ten minutes later.

Roderick Kabwe handed Zanaco a 2-1 halftime lead in the 24th minute before Aubrey Funga added the visitors third in the 71st minute.

However, Mulao completed his brace in the 81st minute before Mwila Phiri restored parity in the 85th minute to see Eagles and Zanaco share the spoils.

And at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, FAZ Super Division defending champions Zesco United stayed a close third after a 4-0 home win over promoted Lusaka Dynamos.

Kondwani Mtonga, Winston Kalengo, Clatus Chama and Mwape Mwelwa were on target in the 21st,28th, 54th and 65th minutes respectively to keep Zesco three points behind Zanaco.

I’d rather be a PF cadre than an imitation of an English golem – Katele

Dr Katele Kalumba
Dr Katele Kalumba

Sub-Chief Natende of the Bwile people of Chiengi District, Katele Kalumba has described critics that have referred to him as a PF cadre as imitations of English golems.

Sub-Chief Natende says he would rather be a Northern PF cadre, as he has been said to be, than an imitation of an English golem whose brain is only a fraction of single cell species’ brain.

He has told Qfm News by telephone that the imitation of an English golem whose brain he has described refers to a person who does not think being regionalist is against the country’s Motto of One Zambia One Nation.

Sub-Chief Natende states that such a person is also whom he thinks does not understand that being elitist misses the sentiments of the grassroots.

He is of the view that the ordinary Zambians that he lives with in his home Village understand what is going on much better than the very educated Zambians who believe they know everything and cannot be advised by anyone.

The traditional leader states that this is why he is not apologetic to anyone over his decision to support the ruling PF because he has made the decision based on principle
He says the ruling PF and President Edgar Lungu as its leader have started demonstrating their commitment to grassroots politics.

President Lungu should address the nation on the Electricity Supply crisis-UPND Demands

54

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

27TH JUNE 2015

UPND EXPRESSES CONCERN ON INCREASED LOADSHEDDING

Reports that the Zambian government further intends to export electricity to neighboring countries before satisfying the local power demand confirms what we have been saying that our colleagues in the PF government have wrong priorities when it comes to developing the country.

With due respect to our neighboring countries and existing bilateral relations, one would have expected that the PF government would treat the issue of current power blackouts as a national disaster that needs urgent attention with a clear policy guidance by the president even addressing the nation than gallivanting all over the world.

The current spate of load shedding is as unacceptable as the reasons being given for the same. It is public knowledge that huge amounts of borrowed money at high interest rates was pumped into ZESCO with a view to increase the generation capacity so as to meet the national power consumption demand, but the complete opposite has happened.

As UPND, we have always insisted on proper planning and putting right priorities that alleviate our people’s suffering and poverty. The fact that we are currently exporting power to neighboring countries means low water situation cannot be used as an excuse.

In any case, Zambia currently sits on an estimated 40 percent of the entire Southern African region’s water bodies which the country has lamentably failed to harness for various economic ventures such as power generation, agricultural irrigation and industry and manufacturing sectors.

In any case, there are many countries in Africa which are basically semi or completely deserts, but have invested in alternative energy source.

We in the UPND feel for even the small business ventures such as our widows and women running saloons, young people with no decent jobs but running barber shops and business centres such internet cafes. Most household chores and office work have virtually come to a stand still due to lack of electricity while food stuffs in most home and restaurants are going bad.

What is more disturbing is that even the load shedding schedule heavily publicized by ZESCO and great cost to consumers is not even followed. This simply shows the chaos that is going on in our governance system and it is shocking that a problem of national magnitude has been left to junior ZESCO officers to explain to the nation while the PF national leadership is going about their own business as if everything is normal in the country.

We demand that President Edgar Lungu should address the nation on the electricity supply crisis which is causing damage to the already struggling economy while continuing to export electricity to neighbouring countries.

ZACCI to continue working with Govt to promote development

0

The Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) says it will continue to work with government and other stakeholders to promote and develop economic activities including trade.

ZACCI President Geoffrey Sakulanda said his association is committed to develop and promote commerce and industry with all stakeholders by speaking authoritatively on behalf of the business community.

Mr. Sakulanda said ZACCI will also continue to act as a link between the private sector, both large and small and government and other organisations having similar objectives to those of ZACCI.

He said this at the Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry 58th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Lusaka yesterday.

And Mr. Sakulanda has praised government for making efforts to improving the business environment and improve the competitiveness of Zambia in the region and internationally.

Mr. Sakulanda said his organisation values the efforts government is making in creating a conducive business climate and by stabilising the economy.

He said ZACCI also acknowledges government’s commitment on growing the private sector and diversifying the economy from mining to other sectors such as manufacturing and tourism.

Mr. Sakulanda has meanwhile reaffirmed his association’s commitment to continue dialoging with government on polices that impact on the growth of the private sector.

Check yourself before talking corruption- Chama tells Kabimba

24

Patriotic Front Secretary General Davies Chama says Rainbow party president Wynter Kabimba should check himself first before accusing the ruling party of habouring corrupt elements.

Mr Chama has told QFM News that Mr Kabimba’s formation of a political party is aimed at protecting himself from some hidden agenda.

He says it is Mr Kabimba who has been flashing out monies and distributing vehicles which he allegedly got during the time he served as Justice Minister and PF Secretary General which he has not accounted for.

Mr. Chama has also advised Mr. Kabimba to report any perceived corrupt elements in the PF to the Anti Corruption Commission and prove his allegations.

Mr. Chama states that the PF is open to be investigated by the law enforcement agencies on the allegations being made by Mr Kabimba.

Low manufacturing industry contribution to GDP worries government

7

Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Margaret Mwanakatwe
Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Margaret Mwanakatwe

Government is concerned with the low contribution of the manufacturing industry to the country’s gross domestic products (GDP) and the formal workforce.

Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Margaret Mwanakatwe said the manufacturing sector’s eight percent contribution to the country’s GDP is minimal hence the need to increase it in order to create wealth and
employment for the Zambian people.

Mrs. Mwanakatwe has however reaffirmed government’s commitment to dialogue with all key stakeholders in addressing the various challenges affecting the growth of the manufacturing industry in the country.

She said this in Lusaka today when she officially opened the Zambia Association of Manufacturers’ (ZAM) 29th elective annual general meeting (AGM).

The ZAM annual general meeting is being held under the theme “manufacturing for accelerated structural transformation and sustainable social-economic development”.

And Mrs. Mwanakatwe has implored ZAM to urgently bring on board structural transformation matters that will add value to the growth of the local manufacturing industry in the country.

She said government recognises ZAM as a key driver in accelerating the production of competitive locally made products.

Earlier, outgoing ZAM president Bright Chunga said his association did not perform to the expectations due to various challenges.

Dr. Chunga said there was need to promote competitive access to raw materials by ensuring that the country’s tax policy does not penalize imports of inputs while allowing finished products duty free entry.
