Government says it is concerned over the business model by the Kansanshi mine management said to be creating despondency among the local people.

State House special assistant for project implementation and monitoring Lucky Mulusa says the mining firm should revisit its business model in order to create security of tenure.

Mr Mulusa said there is need for the mine to tie up the loose ends in the way it does business with other players.

ZANIS reports that the State House special assistant for project implementation and monitoring said government will soon be engaging the owners of Kansanshi mine to discuss the way forward on the business model which has raised concern.

Mr Mulusa was briefing journalists in Solwezi yesterday after a meeting with contractors and Kansanshi mine management.

He said government was also concerned that there was lack of transparency and information sharing in the way contracts were being crafted.

Mr Mulusa said contractors are not told that they have been engaged to perform a certain task and end up investing huge sums of money only for the contract to be terminated before they recover the money.

He said there must be adequate information sharing between the two parties and that contractors should also pass on the information to their workers.

Mr Mulusa described the meeting as fruitful and was hopeful that the concerns raised will be attended to in order to reduce on creating anxiety with regards to job losses.

He was in the district to get first-hand information on the continued reports of job losses at Kansanshi mine which he said was worrying the presidency.

We have enough maize – Lungu

President Edgar Lungu
President Edgar Lungu
President Edgar Lungu says there is enough maize to sustain the country in the event that Zambia experiences poor maize harvest this year.

Speaking when he met 15 Lamba-Lima Chiefs at Levy Mwanawasa stadium this morning, President Lungu dispelled fears of the country experiencing food shortages because of the poor rainfall pattern in some parts of the country.

The Head of State said he has been assured by authorities in charge of maize reserves that there is enough maize stock to last the country until the next farming season.

Mr Lungu was responding to concerns by Senior Chief Chiwala over the expected poor maize harvest which may result in food shortages.

Chief Chiwala also asked government to distribute farming inputs early for the 2015/2016 farming season.

And President Lungu has said that he is working hard to ensure that farmers diversify from growing maize only.

Mr Lungu said government is working on promoting irrigation farming and crop diversification as one of the interventions to fight food shortage.

And the president has reiterated that the enactment of the constitution should not be rushed.

Mr Lungu said there is need for all Zambians to read the draft constitution thoughtfully.

The President said some clauses in the draft constitution are retrogressive and need to be addressed to take into account the interests of ordinary Zambians.

He said government is ready to enact the constitution if it is the people’s wish to do so but cautioned that it would be to the disadvantage of some groups in society.

The president was reacting to concerns that some proposals regarding land in the constitution strips chiefs’ powers of control over land.

Mr Lungu however, assured the chiefs that he will look into the land disputes that have arisen from the creation of new districts.

He said he is aware that there are land disputes involving chiefs resulting from the creation of new districts such as Ngabwe in Kapiri which has overlapped into some copperbelt chiefdoms.

President Lungu said government is addressing the matter and has asked the office of the Surveyor General to scrutinize district boundaries.

She named Masaiti and Kafulafuta constituencies as being among the first to receive the vehicles under phase one in August this year.

And Masaiti District Commissioner thanked Ms Libongani for her support in ensuring that the campaigns were violent free.

Mr Mwambana said despite the area lacking a number of social amenities the political parties had been able to hold peaceful campaigns.

He appealed to the Inspector General of Police to open up more police stations because the area had an increase in crime.

“We only have two police stations in the district, but my request is consider opening up more police posts,” he said.

He said police officers in the area were facing challenges of accommodation and had no operational vehicles to conduct patrols.

In response the IG assured the DC that the problem of accommodation would be resolved because the Ministry of Home Affairs had a project to construct houses for the Zambia Police officers.

Zambia in make-or-break All-Africa Games decider

Zambia and Nigeria Under-23 teams’ clash in a 2015 All-Africa Games qualifying decider at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka on Sunday.

The two sides are scoreless from the final round, first leg qualifier played in Abuja on March 22.

Fighton Simukonda’s team need a win on Sunday afternoon to book their place at the All-Africa Games that will be hosted by Congo-Brazzaville from September 4-19.

“Nigeria is a good side, they have a good record but my players also know the importance of this game and what is at stake,” Simukonda said.

“We don’t want to sleep, all we want is to defeat Nigeria and qualify to the All-Africa Games slated for Congo Brazzaville.”

The pressure is very much on Zambia to win.

This is after they failed to qualify four years ago when they broke their qualification cycle for the 2011 Games in Mozambique under Lucky Msiska after previously participating in each of the previous four tournaments since 1995; winning silver in 1999 and finishing fourth in 2003 and 2007.

Ms.Libongani says the vehicles to be procured in phases are meant to address transport challenges faced by the police service in the country.

Ms.Libongani who was in Masaiti District to sensitise police officers on the need to reinforce peace keeping during the Tuesday April 14th by elections, called on officers to remain professional and impartial during the by election period.

Meanwhile, Masaiti District Commissioner Joseph Mwambana said there is rampant crime in far flung areas of Masaiti as Police Service in District cannot reach those areas due to lack of transport.

Mr.Mwambana stated that despite Masaiti being a vast district, it still relies on two police stations, which are miles away for many communities.

Government launches mental health literacy project

1

Government in partnership with New Craig Hospital of Highland of Scotland in the United Kingdom (UK) has launched the mental health literacy project an innovation aimed at interactive mind stimulation and community participation

Eastern Province Medical Officer Dr Abel Kabalo says government appreciates Public Private Partnership that supplements its effort in bridging the gap in the mental health service delivery.

Dr Kabalo noted that the coming on board of New Craig Hospital of Highland of Scotland, United Kingdom (UK) to partner with Chipata General Hospital will go a long way in improving the conditions of patients that suffer from mental health.

He said this when he graced the occasion held at Chipata General Hospital (CGH) Psychiatry department, today.

He stated that Ghana was also part of the project as a mentor which introduced mental health management in communities of which Chipata’s Psychiatry department is to emulate.

“This intervention rides on the successful programmes that uses community model of managing patients with mental health need, as done in Ghana,” he said.

Dr Kabalo stated that the welfare of mental health patients have been neglected for a long time because people consider that a person cannot die from the condition.

He stated that mental illness also does not attract political influence hence the need to integrate the mental program saying under the program art psycho-therapy has been introduced as an innovation aimed at interactive mind stimulation as well as community participation.

“The Community model to be adopted as done in Ghana where the community is actively involved will help overcome mental disorders hence the need for us in Eastern province to do a good job to attract other regions to emulate,” he said.

And speaking at the same function Project lead from Scotland, Annie Manson expressed happiness over the coming up of three countries to overcome challenges faced with mental illness.

Ms Manson noted that such innovation to sensitize communities through drama, poetry and debates will assist those suffering overcome the burden and also be able to access services closer to them and also raise awareness within communities.

She stated that once the mental patients receive the support they will be able to come out especially that some of the conditions include depression and stress of which with support one can overcome.

And Ghana Link Project Lead, Randy Sedem Agbodo stated that mental health services on the continent deserves a facelift where partnerships are embraced.

Mr Agbodo said Ghana with a population of 25 million only has three psychiatric hospital, a situation found in other parts of Africa.

“Fortunately for Ghana the concept of community care was introduced some years back and has established well as communities are able to get a service within their community,” he added.

The two sides are scoreless from the first leg match played on March 22 in Abuja.

Embattled Nkana seek first league win

1

Beleaguered Nkana visit national Assembly on Saturday in search of an elusive first league win of the 2015 FAZ Super Division season.

The Kitwe side have endured a turbulent start to the season after picking up just one point from their opening three games.

Nkana’s results have seen them lose both their home league games while their only point so far came in a 0-0 away draw at Konkola Blades on March 21.

Crucially, the record-twelve time champions head to Lusaka with a revamped bench whose sole survivor is head coach Beston Chambeshi after Tuesday’s firing of Gift Kampamba and Zeddy Saileti.

And so Chambeshi and his pick of new assistants in Linos Makwaza and Fidelis Chungu are set for a trial on Saturday against fellow winless side National Assembly as Nkana tries to justify the changes.

Meanwhile, Assembly are just below Nkana in 13th place also on one point.

However, Assembly have a poor record against Nkana and trace their last win over the latter to 2004 and since then amassed a record of five defeats and three draws.

Memories are also still very fresh of the two sides last meeting in November when Nkana thumped Assembly 6-0 in Lusaka.

“It is just a game like any other game. Nkana is a Premier League team like we are also in the Premier League so we are going to face them as equals,” Assembly coach George Kapembwa said.
