Zambia U20 Adjusts West Africa Friendly Tour Dates

0

Dates to Zambia U20’s pre-2023 U20 AFCON three-match friendly tour of West Africa have been adjusted.

Zambia was due to play fellow 2023 U20 AFCON finalists Nigeria and Senegal over the next seven days.

Chisi Mbewe’s team was due to kick off its West African tour against Nigeria in Abuja with two dates on January 27 and 30.

Zambia was later scheduled to face Senegal in Dakar on February 2.

“The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and their Nigerian counterparts have rescheduled their two friendly matches involving their under-20 sides to February 3 and 6,” FAZ spokesperson Sydney Mungala said in a statement.

The friendly against Senegal will now be played on February 9 in Dakar.

Zambia will thereafter head to the U20 AFCON that Egypt will host from February 19 to March 11.

Zambia is Group C where they will play Gambia, Tunisia and Benin in Alexandria.

The semifinalist in Egypt will all qualify for the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia from May 20 to June 11.

This is Zambia’s first time back at the U20 AFCON since winning it as hosts in 2017.

Zambia Flying Doctors has partnered with ZAF to improve rural health service delivery

2

The Zambia Flying Doctor Service and the Zambia Air Force – ZAF have signed a Memorandum of Understanding – MoU aimed at helping the Service to have access to ZAF planes to enable them to reach more remote places.

Zambia Flying Doctor Service Board Chairperson Rosemary Kumwenda stated that the partnership with ZAF will help the service provide health services to hard to reach places.

Speaking after the signing of the MoU at ZAF Headquarters in Lusaka, Dr. Kumwenda said that the MoU involves the provision of aircrafts by ZAF, aircrew and aircraft maintenance personnel.

Dr. Kumwenda added that the FDS is faced with quiet a number of challenges to effectively carry out its mandate, such as lack of sufficient aircrafts to conduct medical evacuations and medical outreach programs simultaneously which is why the MoU has come at the right time.

“ZFDS reached out to ZAF for provision of equipment and services to assist with flying and maintaining the ZFDS aircraft to enhance delivery of aviation-based medical services,” she said

She further said that ZAF has been a reliable partner for ZFDS for emergency medical evacuations in areas where the service’ aircrafts can not land, adding that ZAF has always provided choppers to make service delivery efficient.

Dr. Kumwenda noted that the signing of the MoU will also outline the significance for the two institutions and showcase the importance of teamwork.

And ZAF Commander Colin Barry has assured the service that the air force will provide suitable aircrafts, personnel and equipment needed for medical missions.

In a speech read on his behalf by ZAF Chief of Training Kamima Nyirenda, General Barry said that health is a right for all Zambians including those in remote areas.

General Barry added that he is elated by ZFDS’s commitment to its statutory mandate of combating disease and promoting the health and material wellbeing of inhabitants of the rural areas in the country.

“ZAF is proud to be associated with such efforts to enhance quality health in its service to the country,” he said

He stated that ZAF is continually looking for opportunities to carry out its constitutional mandate of coordinating with state organs and state institutions in times of public emergencies and national disasters, to serve Zambians better.

This week, the Zambia Flying Doctor Service – ZFDS announced that it will double its outreach efforts in 2023.

And the Zambia Flying Doctor Service Chief Executive Officer George Ng’uni said that the service is on the verge of signing a Memorandum of Understanding – MoU with the Zambia Air Force – ZAF to use ZAF choppers to reach out to the remotest areas of the country.

Dr. Ng’uni noted that it has been hard to provide healthcare services especially in the rainy season due to the conditions of some airstrips.

He also assured Zambians that the service will double its outreach efforts once its other aircraft resumes flying.

Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Paramount Chief Chiti Mukulu of the Bemba speaking people, Dr. Ng’uni mentioned that the engine of the spare aircraft is undergoing an overhaul and is expected to be brought back by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Chief Chiti Mukulu commended the ZFDS management for reviving the service and sticking to it’s mandate.

The Paramount Chief said Northern Province is one of the most underdeveloped Provinces in the country and such services will help to enhance people’s health.

Chief Chiti Mukulu also urged ZFDS to consider educating people in rural areas on the safe usage of traditional herbs because they are the experts who know the advantages and effects.

And Northern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Lewis Mwape said that ZFDS will continue being supported because it is the Government’s tool to reach out to the rural areas for healthcare provision.

I am not shocked with the Ndola High Court judgment – Bowman Lusambo

14

Former Kabushi Member of Parliament Bowman Lusambo says he is not shocked that the High Court threw out his petition in which he sought nullification of the election of United Party for National Development – UPND Bernard Kanengu as Kabushi Member of Parliament.

Mr Lusambo who is also the former Lusaka Province Minister mentioned that he is aware that some government officials were allegedly being threatened hence, not working freely.

“Am not shocked and disturbed with the outcome of the Ndola High Court’s doing, as a politician am not worried and am not shocked because I know what is going on in the country where officers in government are being threatened, as they don’t want them to be independent and work freely, they want them to be controlled, that as a Zambian, and former Member of Parliament for Kabushi Constituency and former Minister of this country, am worried because we need to protect the Constitution of our country, we need to protect in short the rule of law, democracy which our forefathers fought for and also we need to protect the human rights,” he explained

He added that the issue at hand is the fact that he was prevented from re-constenting the Kabushi parliamentary seat.
“As a former Minister, and former lawmaker am very worried because what we took to court, we went to court with facts, we were not befishing because we didn’t go to court to fish, we went to court with facts and we expected the court to preside over these facts, we didn’t go to court to lie,” he said

“The issue at hand is the issue to do with prevention, where you prevented to stand in Kabushi constituency during the by-elections? My answer is yes, why am I saying yes, am saying yes because the issue at hand was presided over the Constitutional Court where they said that nullification does not amount to disqualification that was enough and this judgment came in March, and we went to Kabushi in August and we told the court that the Electoral Commission of Zambia error, and this issue at hand is this, so we went to the High Court because that is where the matters to do with petition of an election is supposed to go to, so from the High Court we go to the Constitutional Court,” he added

Mr Lusambo alluded that their predict in the High Court, they where 100 percent on the firm ground because they were talking about things which are there, things which can be seen, adding that he is not comfortable with the judgment passed by the Ndola High Court neither does he accept it.

“The Chief Executive Officer of the Electoral Commission of Zambia came to reaffirm what we told the court, so we are very surprised that we had that type of judgment,” he said

Mr Lusambo has since assured that the case is still ongoing as they are going to the Constitutional Court, as this is a direct and straight forward case, adding that this case only needs about two hours to preside over and a verdict is given.
On Tuesday January 4th 2023, the Ndola High Court ruled that a by-election in Kabushi Constituency was legally held.
High Court Judge Ruth Chibabuka said as shown in the petition, the alleged contraversion indicated that the by-election Mr Lusambo had the election voided at the basis of the rejection of his nomination papers.

Meanwhile, Mr Lusambo said that he will support any presidential candidate capable of ensuring victory for the former ruling party the Patriotic Front – PF in the 2026 general elections.

“For me I will support any candidate I will see fit that this candidate will take us back into the government,” he said

A Nightmare

By Sishuwa Sishuwa

They were clad in decent clothes. They spoke very well, in tongues I could readily understand. They were the kind of people that inspired trust. And trust them I did.

They followed me. They came to my compound, a slum. Just like my fellow community members, I lived in a shack made of cardboard and worn metallic sheets.

I had a wife and four kids, the only evidence of my creativity. It was a single roomed shack partitioned in the middle by a filthy piece of well-worn cloth, not the kind of environment to raise kids under.

I had no electricity. I had no running water. Being unemployed, you wouldn’t want to know just how I was managing to fend for my family. It is a horror story, my shameful secret.

They followed me because I had value. They knew it was me with the power. They were looking for employment and knowing that their dream would not come true without me, they came to persuade me. They were very good at it, those people.

They told me that they would change my life. They said that they would put me and my family in good housing. They said that they would help me educate my kids and safeguard my health. They said that they would create millions of jobs and that one of them would be mine. I was enthused.

Then they talked about water. Just like I had known all my life, though I had none, they said that water was life. They said that it was unacceptable for me to live the way I was. I agreed with them.

When they looked at my kids, they noted that they were malnourished and stunted. This, they promised to change. It was the deplorable conditions under which I lived to blame, they said. Then they explained that it was the leaders of my community, the leaders that I had earlier put in place that had created these deplorable and inimical conditions.

It was then that they showed me pictures of just how the leaders to blame looked and lived. Whereas I was suffering from adult malnutrition, my leaders were bloated with fat. Then I saw their cars. One of their cars could have financed my life for decades, I surmised. When I saw their palatial houses, anger began to well up in me.

Then they said that what I had seen contrasted with my life was the very picture of corruption. They explained that it was this corruption that was the cause of my sorry existence. I nodded. Then they asked me if I wanted my life to change for the better. I vigorously nodded. Then they asked me if I was ready to get rid of this corruption which was robbing me of my life and that of my family. I told them I wanted to do it there and then. To me, that was urgent. Wait, time would soon come for your action, they assured me.

All you must do is mark here. They showed me a piece of paper with someone’s photo, a symbol I did not recognise and an empty box at its end. They said on a day coming soon, I should just mark where they had shown me, and corruption would be over. I felt good.

They said that with just that one decision of mine, my life would be transformed for the better. They said that my poverty would then become history.

Later, someone told me that the piece of paper that they had shown me was a ballot paper. This person said that what they were asking me to do was vote for them. They had come to ask me for my vote. Oh, that is easy, I thought to myself.

That is how they convinced me to vote out the allegedly corrupt leaders of the day and vote them into leadership instead.

On the appointed day, eager to have my life changed, I woke very early, and I cast my vote for them. That is how I put them in power.

Time passed. Then more time passed but things stayed the same. They even got worse in some cases. I lost one of my kids to diarrhoea.

Then one day, I suddenly opened a door that was ajar, slightly open. I do not know why I did that, I just did it. I must have heard some cries of pain coming from there. I now remember. That is what made me open that door. It was instinctive. Shrill cries of anguish were issuing from there.

When I walked into the room, I found them all there, their backs turned away from me, huddled over a table, fussing over something.

At the sound of my footfalls, they all turned their heads and faced me. We all froze.

What I saw then I had never seen before. It was a sight of utter horror. They had blood on their lips. They looked frenzied, as if possessed with demons. Their eyes were red, as if aflame with some sick passion. They did not look human.

At the table lay a child, his belly slit open, his bowels all over his body, fresh blood flowing from it. It was apparent to me there and then that I had stumbled upon a devilish feast, a feast I was not supposed to witness. One of them had the still throbbing dead boy’s heart in his hands, ready to sink his avaricious teeth into it.

Noting that I had found them out, they eventually looked sheepish. It dawned on them that I now knew who they really were. This paralysed them. They just stood there as if pillars of stone. Then something strange suddenly happened. Their robes fell off their bodies. What was revealed frightened me to my bones.

They were wolves. Then they began to howl. That is when I went for the door.

It was then that I woke up.

It was the rain falling through my shack’s roof that was dripping on my reed mat as I slept that I first noticed. My threadbare bedclothes were quickly becoming wet.

Then quickly, I woke up my wife and kids. We then got pots and placed them beneath the leaks in what was our shack’s roof. It was not yet dawn. We did not sleep that night.

As we huddled together for comfort that rainy night it was then that I realised just how poor I really was. I cried. No one noticed that I was crying. They concluded that it was merely rainwater on my face. It hurt me so bad that I could live the way I was and yet others lived better, at that time soundly asleep.

Ba sakalanyongo. It was a record playing at some late night bar in the neighbourhood. That eerie sound wafted into me like a balm. I wondered just whether my wife and remaining kids were also able to hear it. It was both an incriminating and enlightening sound.

Nothing had changed. I was still the poor man I had been all my life. My life was actually falling apart.

Ever since that day, I have never slept again.

I am now awake.

Stakeholders should come on board to help resolve escalating mealie meal prices – Trevor Mwiinde

8

United Party for National Development – UPND Deputy National Chairman Trevor Mwiinde says various stakeholders should come on board and move in one direction with the government as this will help to address the issue of the escalating prices of mealie meal that need to be urgently resolved.

Mr Mwiinde explained that ideally, in a free market economy products, goods or services are self regulated, and there are many connections including administration at the Food Reserve Agency – FRA which needs to help the government by offloading certain levels of commodities such as maize to both well established and balanced millers and the upcoming millers as this will help to mitigate the high cost of mealie meal.

He further explained that the promises which where made by the UPND championed the campaign as they are still confident that they are on the right track to ensure that negatives including the price of mealie meal will be addressed and will soon be a thing of the past especially if at all, all the stakeholders come on board to move in one direction without anybody remaining behind.

“Because as politicians we are aware of certain vendors are trying to increase the prices of mealie meal,” he said
“Before we generalise anything lets first segment these communities, am aware that in Misisi compound, Chibolya, Kanyama, Mandevu, Chawama, Chainda, Bauleni to name a few, if you would want to compare and talk about the mealie meal prices and scarcity of the commodity to a poor Zambian, am well aware that their are young men and girls who are even going to school on an empty stomach, it did not even need for the International Monetray Fund – IMF boss to come and predict that in Zambia over two (2) million people are likely to be directly or indirectly be affected by hunger, it needed a leader who understands and can prioritise agriculture above all,” he said

“I did mentioned that the Zambians did vote with confidence for President Hakainde Hichilema to make sure that there is economic liberation in this country, he was not put in office to try and play politics of supporting one group of people while disadvantaging others, we support the UPND because we believe that the social-economic policies are pro-poor and it is for that reason that we as youth leaders are advocating for more to be done,” he added

“One of the key reasons why people change government is because of hunger which can change someone’s mindset as a hungry man has no loyalty because when one hasn’t eaten and is being told things which they are not supposed to hears instead of the truth, I do understand this plight,” he said

Mr Mwiinde has appealed to the board chairperson at the Food Reserve Agency to look into the plight of their workers and operations and ensure that it harmonises and mitigates the much talked about mealie meal prices in the country.
And when responding to the allegations that over 700 workers at the Food Reserve Agency where laid off, Mr Mwiinde stated that if at all there are any such differences at the Agency with either the workers or anybody, he hopes that the these differences can be amicably be resolved within the shortest possible time as their Party does not believe in escalating confusion as people cannot be able to flourish oin confusion.

“If it is prudent that any of the stakeholders within their management system exceeded their authority beyond their mandate, I think there is enough space for the Minister of Agriculture and the Permanent Secretary to take due course, am not giving them instructions but am simply speaking as a citizen in respectful way,” he said

Mr Mwiinde has since appealed to the Food Reserve Agency leadership especially the Board Chairperson who steers most of the decisions to try by all means to do the right thing for the country.

Anthony Bwalya was not suitable for the role of Presidential Spokesperson-Sean Tembo

25

Sean Tembo, the President of the People’s Party (PeP), has shared his thoughts on the recent re-assignment of Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Anthony Bwalya, to become Zambia’s Deputy High Commissioner to Tanzania. The move has caused a social media storm, with many speculating on the reasons behind the decision.

“As an opposition leader, I actually enjoy condemning the New Dawn administration. I spend most of my time scrutinizing their actions and words looking for faults, and when I find those faults, I enjoy amplifying them and then repeating them and further amplifying them,” said Mr. Tembo.

However, on this matter of the re-assignment of Mr. Anthony Bwalya, Mr. Tembo is of a different opinion.

One popular opinion is that President Hakainde Hichilema used Mr. Bwalya to create a semblance of a regionally balanced State House team and that, like the former Presidential Photographer; Chellah Tukuya, he will be replaced by someone from one of the Zambezi Provinces.

“I do not share this popular opinion for the simple reason that Mr. Anthony Bwalya’sreplacement has not yet been announced and it is wrong to speculate. What if he is replaced by another Bemba or an Easterner? Will it not be embarrassing to those who were prematurely peddling this line of thought?” said Mr. Tembo.

Another popular opinion is that Mr. Bwalya was demoted due to the difference in rank between the position of Presidential Spokesperson, which is equivalent to the level of Deputy Secretary to Cabinet, and that of Deputy High Commissioner, which is equivalent to that of Assistant Director.

However, Mr. Tembo believes that this is not an important issue. “If we are going to hold President Hakainde Hichilema accountable for his performance or lack thereof, we need to give him the leeway to hire, fire, demote and promote as he sees fit. It is not for us to dictate who should be promoted or demoted, fired or hired,” said Mr. Tembo.

Mr. Tembo believes that the more pertinent question is whether Mr. Bwalya was good at his job as Presidential Spokesperson.

“Just like the majority of President Hakainde Hichilema’s appointments, it was based on a perceived debt that he acquired from individuals who contributed to his struggles during the time he was in opposition. I believe this is a misconception because the team you need to do politics while you are in opposition may not necessarily be suitable for you to run a government when you ascend to power,” said Mr. Tembo.

Furthermore, Mr. Tembo believes that the job of a Presidential Spokesperson is an important one for any administration, as it is the face of the presidency. “My idea of an appropriate Presidential Spokesperson is someone who does not have a public life of their own, and whose only public life is that of being a Spokesperson to the President. Otherwise, there is an inherent risk of undermining the presidency in ways that are unknown and unseen,” said Mr. Tembo.

He also added that “If the people of Zambia are gracious enough to make me their President one day, my idea of a Presidential Spokesperson is someone who is not going to be in the public domain for any other purpose or reason other than the specific business of the presidency.”

In conclusion, Mr. Tembo believes that Mr. Anthony Bwalya was not suitable for the role of Presidential Spokesperson and that his re-assignment to the position of Deputy High Commissioner to Tanzania may be for the better. He also adds that the President should have the freedom to hire, fire, demote, and promote as he sees fit and that speculating on the reasons behind the re-assignment is not appropriate until a replacement has been announced.

REA launches Electricity Service Access Project Credit Line funded by the World Bank

3

The Rural Electrification Authority – REA in collaboration with the Development Bank of Zambia – DBZ has launched an off-grid loan facility aimed at increasing electricity access in targeted rural areas in Zambia and enhancing private sector participation in rural electrification programs.

The launch of an off-grid loan facility is under the Electricity Service Access Project – ESAP Credit Line Facility which is funded by the World Bank.

Energy Minister Peter Kapala said that the project will support private sector-led electrification of rural communities.

Speaking during the launch of the project in Lusaka today, Mr Kapala who graced the launch as the guest of honour mentioned that the Electricity Services Access Project – ESAP Credit Line Facility will also provide necessary financing for private sector entities to implement rural energy access initiatives.

“ESAP is a key step towards addressing one of the key barriers to increasing access to electricity in rural areas,” he said

And the Rural Electrification Authority – REA Chief Executive Officer Eng. Chanda said in his opening remarks that it is their desire to see to it that this Credit Line will add to what the Zambian government is already doing in the rural space to accelerate the livelihood of the people in rural areas.

And Development Bank of Zambia – DBZ Acting Managing Director, Maybin Muyawala disclosed that the initiative is one of the many innovations the Bank has embarked on to develop and provide financial solutions to social, economic and environmental problems.

Mr Muyawala further disclosed that the role of DBZ is to manage US2.5 million line of credit for off-grid renewable projects to private sector which will be accessed through the Zambia National Commercial Bank – ZANACO, adding that this is a pilot project that will ensure that the Bank works closely with the private sector and the government to increase energy access in the country and develop a robust bankable pipeline that will be subsequently unlock further investments in the renewable energy sector.

“ESAP Credit Line Facility is the Bank’s first credit facility specifically targeted for renewable energy projects, which is an important achievement for the Department of Energy, REA, ZANACO, World Bank and DBZ in supporting the government’s effort to increase energy access,” he said

He explained that DBZ has been actively involved in ESAP since its inception in 2017, the project being funded by the World Bank and REA as an implementing Agent, the overall objective of the project is to increase electricity access in targeted rural areas in Zambia.

Mr Muyawala has since commended REA and the World Bank for considering the Development Bank of Zambia in this partnership and providing support to ensure that Bank was ready to diligently execute its role as a prefered partner for development, adding that he looks forward to strengthening their partnership as active players in the country’s climate finance space.

Meanwhile, World Bank Representative Christopher Saunders said that the Bank will continue supporting the efforts of the government and the private sector in resolving the challenges the country is facing such as lack of adequate energy.

Mr Saunders mentioned that establishment of this credit line under the World Bank Finance Electricity Service is a project whose objective is to increase electricity access in targeted rural areas and supporting an enabling environment for accelerated national electricity across the whole Zambia.

“The project supports the expansion of the national grid for rural electrification, grid connections as well as many grids and energy kiosks project development in rural areas in addition to the credit line that will supplement all of these efforts,” he said

And ZANACO Managing Mukwandi Chibesakunda said that the initiative has come at the right time when Zambia needs adequate investment in the energy sector.

ZAFFICO to promote the establishment of forest out-grower schemes by individuals and communities

0

Zambia Forestry and Forest Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO) have pledged its commitment to enhancing support toward the promotion and establishment of forest out-grower schemes by individuals and communities in Zambia as a way of fighting global warming.

ZAFFICO’s mandate is to establish and manage industrial exotic forest plantations and supply quality wood products for local and export markets.

The corporation currently manages approximately 48,000 hectares of exotic tree plantations in Copperbelt Province alone.

During the 2022/2023 Copperbelt Provincial tree planting season by the Forestry Department and Cooperating partners in Ndola, ZAFFICO Managing Director Mundia Mundia said the corporation is pleased with various tree planting initiatives in the country.

Mr. Mundia said besides the 48,000 hectares of exotic tree plantations in Copperbelt Province, the corporation has established new plantations in Muchinga, Luapula, Northern and North-Western Provinces of Zambia.

He said ZAFFICO currently manages approximately 57,000ha of exotic tree plantations in Copperbelt, Muchinga, Luapula, northern and North-western provinces of Zambia.

“Zambia Forestry and Forest Industries Corporation PLC (ZAFFICO) is pleased to be part of this tree planting exercise this morning. Of these, I am pleased to inform you that 48,000ha are in the Copperbelt province,” Mr. Mundia said.

He said ZAFFICO has provided 100,000 pine and eucalyptus seedlings to a number of individuals and organisations across the country in a bid to enhance tree planting.

“I am further pleased to inform you that ZAFFICO has just completed its re-planting exercise for the 2022/23 season in all its plantations.

Beyond our planting target, the corporation has this year provided 100,000 pine and eucalyptus seedlings to a number of individuals and organisations across the country. This has been undertaken as part of our corporation social responsibility programme (CSR) and as one way of promoting tree planting in the country, going forward, ZAFFICO will enhance this support in order to promote the establishment of forest out-grower schemes by individuals and communities in Zambia,” he said.

Mr. Mundia further hailed the Government through the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment through the Forestry Department for its role in protecting Zambia’s forestry resources.

He said ZAFFICO has partnered with the forestry department in various tree planting initiatives and will continue to do so.

“ZAFFICO commends the ministry of green economy and environment through the forestry department for its role of protecting Zambia’s forestry resources. The corporation further commends forestry department for promoting various tree planting initiatives in the country. In this regard, the corporation has partnered with the forestry department in various tree planting initiatives and will continue to do so. Other partners include; the Rotary clubs of Ndola, Changzhou resources Zambia limited, East to west construction, Microlink resources limited and Limestone Resources limited. You can count on ZAFFICO to support future collaboration in this area. ZAFFICO plc attaches great importance to the promotion of environmental sustainability as reflected in its strategic plan for the period 2020-2024. ZAFFICO recognizes and will continue to recognize that the corporation’s social, economic and environmental responsibilities to its stakeholders are integral to its business,” Mr. Mundia said.

In order to address climate change’s negative effects, the government of the republic of Zambia signed the UN climate change conference as a contribution to the external dimension of the EU green deal and has committed to plant 2 million hectares of land with trees by 2030.

As Zambia joins the world in fighting global warming, experts say planting trees is one of the best and cheapest ways of taking 25 percent of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

Tree planting helps tackle the global warming crisis, hence resulting in climate change mitigation.

Mineworkers’ Union of Zambia and Egyptian General Trade Union Sign MOU to Invest in Exploration and Mining

5

The Mineworkers’ Union of Zambia (MUZ) is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Egyptian General Trade Union of Miners, Quarries and Salinas Workers to invest in exploration and mining in Zambia.

Last year, MUZ announced its plans to invest in exploration and mining as a way of contributing to the economic growth of the country and enhancing job creation.

MUZ President Joseph Chewe said the Union has made steady progress in establishing its mining company in Zambia and contribute effectively to the country’s economy.

Mr. Chewe, who is in Cairo – Egypt, disclosed that MUZ has already identified sites where it will establish a mining company through the partnership with some Tradition Leaders within the identified areas.

The MUZ President has since urged Trade Unions within Africa to join hands and consider becoming the main players in mining operations besides representing workers only.

He says MUZ has also established good working relationship with some Traditional leaders in Luapula and North-Western Provinces who have made it easy for the Union to advance its intentions of investing in mining.

” We are currently looking for business partners to venture into mining to contribute to job creation and the economic wellbeing of Zambia and Africa as at large,” Mr. Chewe said.

Mr. Chewe, further emphasized that the ownership of mining companies can not be left to foreign investors alone, hence the need for Africans to drive their own agenda of owning mines and derive maximum benefits from their God-given mineral resources.

He was speaking when MUZ delegation met with the Egyptian General Trade Union of Miners, Quarries & Salinas Workers (GTUMQSW) in Cairo Egypt.

And MUZ General Secretary George S. Mumba emphasised the need for more collaborations among the African Trade Unions.

Mr. Mumba further expressed gratitude at the willingness of the Egyptian General Trade Union of Miners, Quarries & Salinas Workers (GTUMQSW), to partner with MUZ to establish a ming company in Zambia.

Meanwhile, MUZ General Trasurer, Chalwe Lengwe said the Union has opted to venture into investments to secure its future amid the shrinking union membership due to technological methods being applied by mining companies to cut their labour force resulting reduced financial base for the Union.

Mr. Chewe is accompanied to Egypt by his General Secretary George S. Mumba and the General Treasurer Chalwe Lengwe at the invitation of the Egyptian General Trade Union of Miners, Quarries & Salinas Workers (GTUMQSW) aimed at establishing business partnership between the two union.

And speaking at the same meeting, Egyptian General Trade Union of Miners, Quarries & Salinas Workers (GTUMQSW) President Mohamed Ahmed Abdelhalim said his union was ready to partner with MUZ in establishing a mine and explore more business opportunities in Zambia.

Mr. Abdelalim further emphasised the need to establish strong ties among African Trade Unions for the mutual benefit of African countries and their workers.

“We will soon be visiting Zambia through you, Mr. President to begin the process of establishing a joint business venture with MUZ aimed at deepening the bilateral relationship between the two unions,” said Mr. Abdelhalim.

This is contained in a media statement issued by MUZ National Coordinator Fletcher Katontoka Mushimbwa from Egypt.

Zambians react sharply to the removal of Presidential Spokesperson Anthony Bwalya from State House

28

Zambians have reacted sharply to the removal of Presidential Spokesperson Anthony Bwalya from State House.

President Hakainde Hichilema has transferred Mr. Bwalya from State House to Tanzania as Deputy High Commission at the Zambian Embassy in East Africa.

Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa announced in a statement on Wednesday that the appointment of Mr. Bwalya into the Diplomatic service is with immediate effect.

Media specialist and diplomat Anthony Mukwita said the transfer of Mr. Bwalya from State House to Tanzania should not be celebrated.

The former Ambassador to Germany said he has observed an unfortunate growing culture of celebrating other people’s pitfalls and challenges in Zambia.

“The culture of jealousy and spite- the case of Anthony Bwalya at State House. I don’t know whether it’s just me, but I have observed an unfortunate growing culture of celebrating other people’s pitfalls and challenges in Zambia. In Deutsch it’s called ´Schadenfreude´ or malicious joy. When someone who once held a privileged position in Zambia is either reprieved of the position or transferred, a large majority of Zambians take to social media to celebrate. It’s almost like a poverty cult thing inked in hate and jealousy,” Ambassador Mukwita said.

Mr. Bwalya had served as Presidential Spokesperson at State House since 2021 until his appointment as Deputy High Commission to Tanzania.

“Take the case of Anthony Bwalya, the immediate past spokesperson of the President of Zambia Mr Hakainde Hichilema, now redeployed to Tanzania as deputy head of mission. Social media is gas-lit with ´celebrations´, which is such a low-down dirty shame because Anthony is not dead; he is alive and still has a job. At a spry 50, Anthony will thrive in Dar-es-Salaam and beyond, while those celebrating his move from State House shall remain in their bottomless pit of pettiness, jealous and abject poverty. My clarion call to you good folks, as we start a new year is, let’s get steeped in love and supporting one another as Zambians, ´rise and fall, not get stuck in the moment of base jealousy and envy, it’s cheap. Today it’s Anthony, tomorrow it’s you. The job Anthony has left is not coming to you,” Ambassador Mukwita said.

Meanwhile, former Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) President Humphrey Mwenya has said the transfer of Mr. Bwalya from State House to Tanzania amounts to demotion.

Mr. Mwenya said Zambia should not kill the political vision of young people.

“Presidential aid is equivalent to a deputy secretary to the cabinet, who is more senior than a permanent secretary. Deputy high commissioner is a civil servant equivalent to Asst Director in a Ministry. We should not kill the political vision of young people. If Zambia can’t nurture leaders, nature itself will nurture its own leaders,” Mr. Mwenya commented.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bwalya’s close friend and outspoken good governance activist Gershom Phiri has claimed that he anticipated his colleague’s exit from State House.

Mr. Phiri said indicators were there that Mr. Bwalya was no longer wanted at State House.

“Some good months ago, I told one of my friends that if Anthony Mukuka Bwalya’s Footprints will not disappear from State House aletola nobwapona, when he tried to argue, I told him kuti wadabwa mu neighboring country or Deputy D.G in one of the GRZ organizations. The Red Lights got too Red like UPND regalia that the Guy was somehow an unwanted plant and those in various ranks and files showed signs to the effect that the guy was alone. For the past few Days I have been receiving information about the same from friends but I thought it will be later than now and had few doubts,” Mr. Phiri said in a facebook statement.

“The guy is and was very competent even better than the current Chief Government Spokesperson, Tony (Anthony) is an excellent person for his previous Job, but from the Time he was continuously being left by the President in most of the trips to the extent Zambians noticing that the same was unjustified, we used our Political Lenses while wearing our Jackets as Ninjas and to us we are not surprised, while we cannot congratulate Mr Anthony Mukuka Bwalya, we wish him all the Best in his new position. We also wonder how such a well positioned and best suited person like him in his previous position can be re-assigned when those who are not competent are not being re-assigned. Go well Ninja Tony Tanzania is close so we shall be coming like we used to come to Lusaka,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, UPND Deputy National Youth Information and Publicity Secretary David Chikwanda has supported Mr. Bwalya’s transfer to Tanzania.

Mr. Chikwanda has since congratulated Mr. Bwalya on his new appointment as Deputy High Commission at the Zambian Embassy in Tanzania.

“Tanzania is a strategic trade partner to Zambia and I believe his Excellency Ambassador Anthony Bwalya will make us proud in that regard. Some may look at it as a demotion but I think this position will open Anthony to bigger opportunities which might have been difficult to pursue due to the tight schedules of the state house. Congratulations Anthony on your new assignment,” Mr. Chikwanda said.

Hichilema’s Tribal Appointments

By Mbita Chitala

We, just like many other citizens such as President Fred Membe of the Socialist Party are concerned with the continued practice of nepotism, cronyism and favoritism by several administrations in our country.

Nepotism, both in scientific literature and in public opinion, is understood as the abuse of person’s position, power or influence in order to confer a privilege on his/her relatives or tribesmen or regional affiliates.

Cronyism on the other hand means the patronage in a professional career that is based simply on close relationship (i.e. schoolmate or friend, common socialite or political ally and the like).

Favoritism is yet another distasteful conduct which describes patronage that is not based on professional or meritorious interest but on personal relationships or interests. In our country Zambia, we have no legal definition of these vices yet.
However, we all know that nepotism, cronyism and favoritism are negative phenomenon both morally and politically, especially when they manifest themselves in the public sector or the political life of our government as they undermine the principles of the legitimacy of any government and public representation.

They undermine democratic processes and our civil society by encouraging mistrust in public authorities, erodes the confidence of civil society in public institutions, weakens the foundations of state security and defense and reduces the resilience of the Zambian society to internal and external threats.

Studies in both our country and elsewhere also show that the risk of corruption is heightened which damages organizations and society at large, compromises democracy, the legal system and the security of our nation.

We teach our students at universities and colleges that when a person in power gives unfair advantage to people who do not have the requisite qualifications or professional responsibility, such a person in power is not only violating the law, but is also violating standards of professional ethics and causing conflict situations in our country.

We further teach our students that it is in the public interest that citizens employed in the public sector, act professionally and provide quality services that are equally accessible to all citizens so that all decisions are taken impartially and in good faith as required by the public interest.

Unfortunately, this has not been the case in our country since the introduction of the one party state constitution in 1973. All subsequent regimes have practiced nepotism, cronyism and favoritism.

President Kaunda tried to address it through the doctrine of “tribal balancing”. President Chiluba’s first term followed the UNIP doctrine but reverted to nepotism in his second term. President Mwanawasa perfected the system through the doctrine of the “family tree”.

President RB Banda continued with the Mwanawasa doctrine. President Sata advanced the system with naked nepotism via regionalism and President Lungu continued with the nepotism of his predecessor.
President Hichilema has simply reversed the obnoxious nepotism of the PF government by an act of retribution and activated a discriminatory doctrine of regionalism.

This has seen the continued Presidential appointment of cadres as District Commissioners instead of subjecting them to professional civil service conditions, the dismissal of Chief Executives and dissolution of Boards of public enterprises and their replacement with UPND members instead of subjecting them to the meritorious selection, the recall of PF appointed diplomats and the appointment of people from the former North Western Rhodesia to hold all senior positions in the Executive, Legislature, Judiciary, Defense and Security organs ad infinitum at the expense of those from the former North Eastern Rhodesia. In other words repeating a wrong that many of us hoped would be corrected by the educated people in the UPND such as Ambassador Sachika who has gone completely silent on this.

Most of us agree with the Socialist Party President Dr. Fred Membe that this conduct by the UPND administration does not advance our national unity and those in power must surely know this.

Mines Minister meets Two CSO’s who petitioned government over KCM, VEDANTA Impasse

9

Yesterday, Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe met two Civil Society Organizations that petitioned the government over the Konkola Copper Mines – KCM and Vedanta standoff.

Zambians for Unity, Peace and Democracy and Advocates for National Development and Democracy had petitioned the Mines minister to give the government position regarding the legal standoff between KCM and Vedanta.

Mr Kabuswe met the two CSO leaders and assured them that the government is seriously looking into the impasse between KCM and Vedanta.

And Advocates for National Development and Democracy Executive Director Samuel Banda said that the assurance by the minister is a step in the right direction.

Mr Banda said Vedanta resources are the legal owners of KCM and that the government should handover back the mine to them so that they create business opportunities and employment.

“We had a successful meeting with the Mines Minister regarding the petition submitted to his office concerning the legal battles between KCM and Vedanta, and he assured us that the government is seriously and critically addressing the KCM, Vedanta legal impasse as he indicated that soon the government will gives its position on this matter,’ he said

Meanwhile, the Zambians for Unity, Peace and Development President Ronnie Jere said that following this assurance, the government should expedite the process of resolving the differences between KCM and Vedanta so that the continued suffering of people on the Copperbelt are averted.

Mr Jere is hopeful that the government’s position over the standoff will be known within this first quarter of the year.

“If the government delays in giving its position, we will go back and petition the Minister to ensure that they put the interests of the people of Zambia first,” he said

Last week, Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe agreed to meet two civil society organizations that petitioned the Government over the Konkola Copper Mines – KCM, Vendata standoff.

Zambia for Peace,Unity and Development ZUPED President Ronnie Jere and Advocates for National Development and Democracy Executive Director Samuel Banda a fortnight ago petitioned the Mines Minister to state Government’s position regarding the legal battles between KCM and Vedanta.

In an interview, ZUPED President Ronnie Jere said that the decision by the Mines Minister to agree to meet the two organizations next week Tuesday is a step in the right direction and ill allow the Minister to state the government’s position on when the negotiations between KCM and Vedanta will conclude.

Mr Jere said that the negotiations cannot go on for a longtime when people on the Copperbelt are suffering.

He added that Vendata should be allowed to run KCM in order to avert the suffering of people on the Copperbelt and also avoid job losses at the mine.

And Advocates For National Development And Democracy Executive Director Samuel Banda indicated that the impasse between KCM and Vedanta needs urgent attention as the economic condition on the Copperbelt is deteriorating.

He insisted that Vedanta has the financial muscle to turnaround fortunes at KCM.

Early this month, the government was petitioned over vedanta and KVM impasse by

Two Non-Government Organizations who came together to petition the government over the delay to resolve the Vedanta and Konkola Copper Mines – KCM standoff.

Zambia for Peace, Unity and Development – ZUPED President Ronnie Jere said that the petition to the Ministry of Mines is meant to prompt the Minister to state government positions on when the negotiations between KCM and Vedanta will conclude.

And speaking during the presentation of the petition, Mr Jere said that negotiations cannot go on in perpetuity when people on the Copperbelt are suffering.

He stated that although the government is commended for having engaged Vedanta into an outside court dialogue, his organization fears the uncertainties surrounding these negotiations which includes the time that these negotiations have taken.

And Advocates for National Development and Democracy Executive Director Samuel Banda has indicated the deteriorating economic situation on the Copperbelt as a result of the continued delays by the government to address the KCM and Vedanta resources.

Mr Banda hence, demanded that the government state its position on when or if Vedanta resources will take over KCM operations to protect jobs and create business opportunities for Copperbelt residents because the issue has prolonged for too long leading to a lot of uncertainties on the future of the mining firm.

Politics should be about ideas on how to govern not malice – Chitalu Chilufya

6

Former Health Minister Dr. Chilufya says Zambian politics needs to be detoxified as this will ensure that politics becomes a competition with ideas on how to govern, and not a platform for acrimony.

He added that the alleged Honey Bee scandal was a product of intra-party and intragovernmental malice meant to malign him, adding that it was mainly because of attempts meant to end the legacy of the scaleup performance in the health sector.
“Science can never be default and I have always said that politicians should not sacrifice science at the altar of politics, just to gain political mileage, evidence on the floor of the house, evidence based on the scientific arena does not point to any inch of truth Zambia ever procuring bad drugs or defect condoms,” he said

Dr. Chilufya has since assured the public that Zambia has a very alert pharmacovigilance system with very well trained supply chain managers, he explained that pharmacovigilance is a process or science that looks at the adverse reactions of medicines or drugs that people consume, adding that pharmacovigilance is an alert process that is able to detect products that are of sub-standard, expired, or products with poor quality, so, the system is alert enough to determine that this drug is expired, or defective.

“So, what I am saying is that the Zambia pharmacovigilance system is very well developed, hence, we cannot procure expired drugs or linking condoms, and if anybody has such a claim, they should lay the evidence on the table, because we have laboratories that are able to conduct standard tests to assure that or to validate the quality of drugs that are being consumed, and pharmacovigilance is practising at various levels even at the level of consumption we are able to detective adverse reactions, report and it is not uncommon to recall a product based on the pharmacovigilance event, and every year billions worth of drugs globally are recalled for various reasons, this done to ensure that the quality of medicines is optimal,” Dr. Chilufya disclosed

Dr. Chilufya has since emphasized that there has never been a procurement of expired drugs or linking condoms in this country, as Zambians deserve closure.

“It is important that we embrace science, and for posterity reasons, we need to ensure that we do not practice dirty politics where we malign each other by coming up with malicious statements to plant a wrong narrative in the collective conscious of the public,” Dr. Chilufya said

Meanwhile, Dr. Chitalu Chilufya said that Zambia’s current health sector is in turmoil which posses a risk to Zambians especially in terms of having premature deaths.

Dr. Chilufya explained that the poor health sector poses a risk and premature deaths in under five children, expectant mothers and adults.

He said Zambia is faced with atripple crisis because of the compromised health services delivery, energy deficit and looming hunger being caused by the mismanagement of the Farmer Input Support Program – FISP.

Speaking when he featured on Millenium Radio yesterday, Dr. Chilufya stated that the critical shortage of essential medicines have forced medical personnel in public health facilities to be issuing prescriptions to patients to buy medicines.

Dr. Chilufya who is Patriotic Front Presidential Aspirant said that Zambia is faced with a triple crisis in the health, agriculture, and energy sectors.

“It’s very important to state here that procurement is a specialised process which is like a science on its own where you first study then do the practical, and over the previous years, we were able to state how many people suffered from a particular illness, how much drugs they have consumed, and we were able to use that data to quantify the focus and needs for the following year and we therefore had the basis of placing timeless procurement, so, procurement of medicine should be based on direct focusting, quantification, should be done timelessly, and there should be adequate funding for the process,” he explained

He said that there are suppliers who are local and some are international, thus, they have to ensure that these procurement processes are managed by supply chain managers who are trained for this, adding that as human capital is managed, ensure that the Ministry particularly specialised departments, ensure that there is continuity as they undertake human capital changes.

It’s my statement, says Bishop Mpundu, ‘what I have written, I have written.

…says he will not disown the OCIDA statement because ‘what I have written, I have written.’

By NATION REPORTER

EMERITUS Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu says attempts by State House and Cabinet Office to have him disown and discredit the Our Civic Duty Association (OCIDA) statement released to the media last week will not succeed because “what I have written, I have written.”

And Archbishop Mpundu has described as dictatorship efforts by the State to gag him and OCIDA from holding a press conference at which he was to address a range of governance issues including regionalism, corruption, emerging dictatorship, high cost of living among others.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Mpundu has rubbished claims by government that the OCIDA statement which was circulated to the media last week was authored by University of Zambia lecturer Sishuwa Sishuwa and Zambia former Ambassador to Ethiopia Emmanuel Mwamba, stating he did not need the two to express his views on national matters.

In an interview, Sunday, Archbishop Mpundu said he owned the OCIDA statement which was circulated to the media last week and that he had sanctioned its distribution after State House and Cabinet Office allegedly sent an emissary in the name of Mwamba Peni to persuade him not to read the statement.

He stated that the UPND administration had adopted the divide and rule tactic and had succeeded in converting some of the trustees against OCIDA who had now launched a crusade to discredit a statement whose draft they had seen and studied.

Archbishop Mpundu stated that he was not going to withdraw the statement nor was he going to disown it and that if government was not pleased with him, there was nothing he could do but advise them to accept his position and work with it.

“Government did not want me to read the statement and so I told one of my people to circulate the document to the press. So that statement cannot be more official than that. It was written and it remains written by us (OCIDA). It is like Pilate who was asked by the Chief priests of the Jews not to write that Jesus was the King of the Jews but to write that Jesus said He was the King of the Jews. But Pilate answered, what I have written, I have written. So I will not withdraw the statement and what I have written, I have written. If they want to take me tom court, so be it,” Archbishop Mpundu said.

He said he had assumed the chairmanship of OCIDA after the retirement of late Simon Zukas and that OCIDA trustees who did not want to continue belonging to the organisation were free to walk away.

Archbishop Mpundu said OCIDA was not going to force its members to stay with the organisation because Zambia was a democracy.

“Remember this is supposed to be a democracy where there is free speech, where people can express their opinions freely…and those who have been elected must listen to the people because it is the people who hold power. The legitimacy of any government is the power of the people. So if the government is not happy, let them suit themselves with what they wish because what we dealt with in the statement were things people are talking about,” Archbishop Mpundu said.

And Archbishop Mpundu has rubbished assertions that it was Dr Sishuwa and Emmanuel Mwamba who had written the OCIDA statement, stating that he did not know the two and had never interacted with any one of them in his life.

He said there was no way he was going to allow anyone person write his thoughts on his behalf because “I always write what I speak.”

Archbishop Mpundu said Zambia should not be allowed to drift back to the dictatorship of the past regimes and that the UPND was being undemocratic by attempting to drown his voice.

“The people from State House sent Mwamba Peni (Permanent Secretary (Special Duties) at Cabinet to come and persuade me not to read the statement. Before they (UPND) formed government, they were happy to listen to the statements I was making. Tell them that not too long ago, Telesphore Mpundu was your hero, what has changed. When I said it was wrong to incarcerate Hakainde Hichilema without trial, they welcomed it and they brought the British Commonwealth here. Remind them of the trips we have made together.”

“Now all of a sudden, I am not in good books with them. Fine, let it be. I did not tell them that I should be in their books all the time. But they should not be creating lies that I do not own the statement,” he said.
